Sit and Be Fit

Yoga for Beginners

Tuesdays 9/8 - 11/24 - 10:30-11:30 a.m. No class on 9/15.

Thursdays 9/10-11/19 - 12:00 noon-1:00 p.m. There will be no class on October 8 and October 29

This full-body workout is designed to be done from both a seated chair and a standing position. The class will emphasize exercises to improve flexibility, muscle and bone strength, circulation, and balance. It is fun and easy and suitable to people of all fitness abilities.

American Sign Language Class

Receive the abundant benefits of yoga. This gentle class offers flowing movements at a gentle pace with attention to breathing and postures. You will see improvement in muscle strength, circulation, flexibility, and balance. It is suitable to people of all fitness levels. Please bring a yoga mat to class.

Introduction to Pyrography

Interested in sign language? Do you want to learn how to communicate with a friend or loved one? Well, we have the perfect class for you. Come learn beginning sign language for free at the Appomattox Regional Library at Hopewell. Classes will be taught by Mr. Darrell Avery, a graduate of Gallaudet University in Deaf Education. The classes will be co-taught by Ms. Connie Pierett, a Hearing Specialist and Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for the Hopewell Public Schools.

Introduction To Origami!

Origami comes from the Japanese word “Oru” meaning to “fold” and “Kami” meaning “paper”. And that’s what it is exactly, the art of folding paper to make wonderful objects. Come listen to Ms. Lily Boykin talk about origami and show you how to do basic origami. Origami is a fun, easy and inexpensive art form which can be shared with your loved ones.

Come share your original poetry, prose or a selection from another writer. Or just come to enjoy a slice of Luca Italian pizza and a drink while you listen to other poets and writers. Nathan Richardson, emcee, maintains a family friendly and supportive atmosphere for all ages. Nathan is a published poet and speaker from Virginia’s Tidewater area. This event is sponsored by the Hopewell/Prince George Friends of the Library with generous support by Luca Italian Restaurant.

Art Exhibit

Welcome to the “Introduction to Pyrography”, presented by Ms. Vita Davenport. Ms. Davenport is an artist who has exhibited her art at the Hopewell, Prince George and Dinwiddie libraries. Pyrography is the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks applied from a heated object. It is an economical and fun art that can really spice up your DIY projects. Come learn how to start your own projects!

Visit this thought-provoking photography exhibit by Victoria Hall. Images both spiritual and spooky are beautifully portrayed in tintype and cyanotype photography.

Book and Paper Design Art with Joy Galloni October 3, 2:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Hopewell/PG Friends of the Library Learn how to create beautiful gifts and home furnishings with those old books with missing pages which you have stacked up in your closet. Give new life to the books you cherished.

Join our knitters and crocheters as they create items for local hospitals, nursing homes and shelters. Crafters of all ages and skill levels are welcome.

YOUTH PROGRAMS Youth NEW! Baby and Me: A new storytime for babies and their caretakers. A great introduction for you and your new family member to the wonderful world of books, rhymes and songs. For babies ages birth to 18 months old, this is a 6-week program beginning September 14. Program is limited to 15 babies and will last approximately 30 minutes. Hopewell Library - 10:00 a.m. on Mondays (9/14, 9/21, 9/28, 10/5, 10/19, 10/26) Prince George Library - 10:00 a.m. on Thursdays (9/17, 9/24, 10/1, 10/8, 10/15, 10/29)

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Kickoff September 12, 2015 10:00-12:00 noon - Prince George Library 3:00-5:00 p.m. - Hopewell Library Join ARLS in an underwater adventure as we kick off our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. We will go under the sea with an entertaining story time, have fun making sea creature crafts, and play exciting games. Whether you are already a registered participant or just want to learn more about the program, join us as we dive into reading!

Fall Story Time September 14 - November 21 No class at Rohoic on September 22 No class at Prince George and Disputanta on October 22 and November 5 No class at Carson on October 23 Story Time is now offered six days of the week at various locations, including Evenings at Rohoic and Saturdays at Prince George! Story time programs aim to instill a love of reading by encouraging parents and other special adults to read aloud to children. Activities in Story Time promote brain and language development for children from birth to age 5. At story time, children and caregivers are introduced to six early literacy skills that are essential for learning to read including print motivation, narrative skills, phonological awareness, vocabulary, letter knowledge, and print awareness. Please join us! No registration is required. Beginning the first week of October, Story Time will move inside the branch for the remainder of the season.

Stories at the Market! September 2015 September 6, 13, 20, 27 at 10:30 a.m. A fun, all ages Story Time is held on September Saturdays at the Prince George Farmer’s Market, adjacent to the Prince George Library! In the event of inclement weather, Story Time will be held inside the library. October-November Saturday Story Times will take place inside the Prince George branch.

Evening Story Time A special offering for families not able to attend during the day. Rohoic Library - Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m.

YOUTH PROGRAMS Special Story Times Recycle It! — Join us on September 22 at the Hopewell and Prince George branches for a special recycling story time and an extra special Minion craft! With the help of Central Virginia Waste Management Authority, the kids will learn more about recycling: what can be recycled and what can’t, why recycling is important, and what happens to the things that are recycled! Prince George - 11:00 a.m., Hopewell - 2:00 p.m.

Halloween Themed Story Times October 26 to October 31 Come get ready for Halloween with stories and a craft during the normal Story Time hours. Come in costume!!!

Thanksgiving Themed Story Times November 16 to November 21 Join us during normal storytime hours for Thanksgiving-themed stories and a craft.

All Ages International Games Day November 21, 2015 Join ARLS as we join the WHOLE WORLD in celebrating gaming! Visit any of our libraries for our ALL DAY GAMING EVENT. We’ll have board games and other activities at all locations, plus Wii games at Prince George from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Come join in the fun!

Early Literacy Classes for Families featuring Rhonda Lee, Literacy Specialist Early literacy is everything a child knows about reading and writing before he or she can read or write. Developing these skills will help your child become a strong, independent reader. It is never too early to start! Join Ms. Lee, an Early Literacy specialist, after select Story Time sessions at the Hopewell and Prince George libraries to learn ways to encourage early literacy skills in your children. Parents and caregivers will receive helpful tips and tricks as well as easy, inexpensive ways to help your child develop valuable skills and love reading!

Library Visits Need a field trip? Don’t have the funds? We’ve got you covered! Come visit the library for a great educational experience for FREE. We offer tours of the library and customized storytimes suitable for your group. Younger kids are exposed to the library system while older children can learn and work on research projects. Join ARLS in celebrating Constitution Week with the Daughters of the American Revolution. We will learn all about the Constitution’s history and how it helped America become the country that it is today! October 20, 2015, 1:00 p.m. at Hopewell Library Celebrate National Bat Month with a presentation of “Bats of the World”. Bat World Hampton Roads will be discussing myths, habitats, food preferences and so much more! NEW! Introducing — Lego Club!

Teen Volunteer Orientation

The Appomattox Regional Library System is very excited to bring Lego Clubs to three of our branches starting this September! If you are already a Lego Master Builder or even if you’re a first timer, this is the place for you. The library will provide the Legos, while the kids provide the imagination! Ages 6-12 Come by the Dinwiddie Library, Hopewell Library and Disputanta Library on Tuesdays, September 29, October 27, Nov 24 - 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

NEW! Reader’s Theater

Act Up! Readers Theater Hey kids, here’s your chance to act up! Children in grades 2 to 5 are invited to join our new Readers Theater Group. Kids will be reading books and short scripts aloud. No experience necessary and no need to learn any lines, just a love of reading and laughing and having fun! NEW! Teen Advisory Group (TAG) October 21 - 6:00 p.m. at Prince George Library Hey teens! This is your chance to help us plan the programs you want to see here in the library, as well as helping out with library projects. Earn community service hours, leadership skills and a membership that looks great on résumés and job and college applications. For teens grades 7–12. We’re having our first meeting at Prince George Library on October 21 at 6:00 p.m. We’ve got ideas of what we want to do; come with ideas of what YOU want to do!

Red Cross Youth Leadership Meetings September 19 - 2:00 p.m. at Hopewell Library American Red Cross Youth Leadership/Preparedness meeting for teens 13-17. We will learn about a leadership topic, discuss how to get involved as a Red Cross youth volunteer, as well as learn about steps to prepare yourselves, and your community, in the event of an emergency or disaster. Friends of the Library Corner The Friends of the Library, Dinwiddie (FOLD) invite you to mark your calendar now for the annual Holiday Open House, scheduled for Friday, December 4, 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. A holiday book sale with bargain prices will begin at the Open House and last through December 23.

Appomattox Regional Library offers free one-on-one appointments with professional librarians for assistance with a variety of different topics. Submit your request for a session of up to thirty minutes at any location of the library system.
