Ramblings From The Editor

L

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ooking for another reason to underline just how cool Cape May is? This weekend sees the latest Exit Zero Jazz Festival, headlined by the legendary Dr John, a multi-Grammy Awards winner and a bona fide music superstar. That particular concert, at Convention Hall on Saturday, is almost sold out (but call the box office on 884-9563), but you have plenty of other opportunities to soak up the magic of this festival. There is the second annual Jazz at the Physick Estate, which has the vibe of a great outdoor concert. That happens this Saturday. And then there are a multitude of artists appearing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at various venues across town. In short, it’s a musical extravaganza, and it’s NOT just for jazz fans. Founder and producer, Michael Kline, has again come up with a roster of artists that’s going to please just about everyone. The best value ticket is the Pops Pass, which for only $50 (would’ve been $45 if you bought it earlier) gets you access to 42 shows. You can buy those at the Exit Zero Store on Beach Avenue (near Jackson), which

of all, please consider becoming one of George’s Angels. Make a minimum $25 donation and get a ticket to the concert, plus an invitation to the rehearsal (with a light brunch) and access to the after-party at the Merion Inn that evening. A pretty amazing deal, wouldn’t you say? To become one of George’s Angels, either call 609-884-5404 and 0 for operator, or go to www.capemaymac.org. Bumped into Jeff Gernitis the other night as I was moseying around town. Jeff is one of the owners of a new restaurant and bar that’s going to cause a stir. I’m talking about the old Pilot House on Decatur, which is about to reopen as Fins. Jeff gave me a tour of the place, and I was blown away. I think this place is going to be packed all summer. A large rectangular, glass-topped bar will dominate the space — bar stools there are going to be prime real estate. I also love how the new owners integrated the old patio space into the restaurant. A lot of imagination, a lot of thought (and a whole lot of money!) went into this project — I wish them well.

is also where you can buy festival merchandise. The eagle-eyed among you might be wondering why the festival changed its name from Exit 0 to Exit Zero. That’s because we became a title sponsor of the event, which is something we are very excited about. It’s a world-class event. Speaking of great music, the Fourth Annual George Mesterhazy Tribute Concert will be held at Cape May Convention Hall on Sunday, June 7. First of all, I can’t believe it’s been more than three years since George passed. Second

The Old Fogey

T

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

here are three things on which I have very strong opinions this week. (Well, four, if you count the abominable mess Young Albert left on the poufé my grandson Cecil brought back for me as a gift from his annual Morrocan vacation with his friend Breslin, but the other three are of greater world signiicance, so Albert’s disgrace will be discussed on a slow news week in the future.) First, the plan to re-evaluate Exit Zero turnpike is not the simple “upgrade” they claim it is. I have it on good authority that the plan is actually to do away with the exit altogether and build a f lyover taking trafic direct to Philly. I knew another town this happened to, a lovely little place called Radiator Springs, and the effect on local business was catastrophic. That city withered and would have died if not for the happenstance that led to a racing car by the name of McQueen being stranded in the town and starting a chain of unlikely events that led to a rebirth and a

race between sentient automobiles. It was all... hold on, my wretched manservant Kitchener is shouting: “That was a kids’ movie, you old fool!” By God he’s right. He’s still ired, of course, but he is right. The second thing is that it is time to reintroduce our much loved “Cape Gay” slogan. I f loated the idea in Martini Beach the other evening, as I celebrated Ireland’s historic Yes To Gay Marriage vote with a gang of red-headed Irish laborers who’d heard we were re-opening the railway station and had come to volunteer their brawn (this is true, but more of that another week). “To be

sure,” one of them said, “this is the gayest little town we ever seen, and believe me, we’ve been to Wildwood, so we know what we’re talking about.” And you know, he had a point: we need to be encouraging a return to those heady days when the beach was a pulsing mass of shaved, oiled pectorals. We cannot let The Gay Tide wash past us, as those chaps are exactly what we need: aesthetically pleasing, unfailingly polite and very keen to spend money on superior accommodations and pricey cocktails. The third thing is this: I hear Mary Lee is back in the area, and if those jackanapes who caught the 820lb Mako lay so much as a inger on Mary, then so help me, Albert will eat well for a month. Not only are sharks a national treasure, but they come in handy when dealing with the leftovers from our occasional border disputes with Wildwood and Ocean City. Also, I have invested in some ten thousand “I came to Cape May and My Wife Got Eaten By Mary Lee” tees, and would be very unhappy at the waste of money.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week is Restaurant Week!

ining out is a pleasure, especially in a restaurant-rich town like Cape May. Once upon a time, eating away from home was a necessary evil. If you were traveling, you might stop at a country inn to eat whatever they were serving, sitting cheek-byjowl with strangers at a common table. The only people who dined out regularly were city dwellers without kitchens, who ate food from a street cart or from a public house. The food was basic, at best, and a strong stomach was an asset. Dining out for pleasure became possible after the French Revolution, when chefs who had served royals found themselves out of work. Still wary of the guild systems that regulated how food was sold, chefs marketed their combined meat and vegetable broths as health products — restoratives, or in French, restaurants. Ordinary people could enjoy fine food, served at individual tables decked with fine linens. Ordinary men, that is. Women had to take meals in their rooms or in separate ladies’ dining rooms,

unless they were accompanied by a man. Public dining was segregated by sex well into the twentieth century — McSorley’s Old Ale House and the Oak Room at the Plaza restricted women until about 1970. New York’s restaurants displayed a more welcoming attitude when Tim Zagat created the first Restaurant Week in 1992, offering three course meals for $19.92 as a goodwill gesture to reporters in town for the Democratic National Convention. The idea caught on and spread to cities and town across the country. While competing res-

taurants once balked at the idea of working together, the promotion is a success. The affordable fi xed price option encourages diners to step out of their comfort zones and dine somewhere new, and to dine out more often. Diners are spoiled by the number and quality of restaurants in Cape May. Conde Nast Traveler magazine named our slice of paradise one of America’s Best Food Cities, and Restaurant Week Cape May (May 31-June 7) lets you indulge. Participating restaurants offer either the $35 three course dinner, the $25 three course dinner, or the $15 two course lunch. Tax, beverages, and tip are not included unless otherwise stated. Visit www.cmrestaurantweek.com for more information and a list of participating restaurants. Visit an old favorite or try a newcomer, like Sapore Italiano. Venture over the bridge to the Back Bay Bistro in the Villas or 5 West Pub in North Cape May. Try Good Earth Organic Eatery in West Cape May for a healthy vegan meal. Next week: Bikes and Beer

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I own a housecleaning business and it is a good one, but when my husband and I split, I felt I needed a partner and took on a woman I knew only superficially. Then at her urging, I hired her daughter. Now I feel I’m working for them. Her daughter is nasty to me and I think they’re taking work on the side that should ours as partners. Problem is — if I buy her out, I’m afraid she’ll retaliate, start her own business, and take my customers with her. What do I do? — Cornered Dear Cornered Be brave. Buy your partner out making sure there is a no-compete clause in the contract as well as one barring her and her daughter from trashing your business on social media. Remember, YOU are the

Wise answers to perplexing questions

entrepreneur. YOU started the business and built it up, not your partner. YOUR energy and work ethic will rule the day. Now, to restore your chi, the Answer Lady recommends a day at one of the hotel beaches like Congress Hall beach or Madison down by the Montreal. Rent a tent, sit back, and order a cocktail. Then have dinner at Harbor View, sitting on the deck and enjoying its namesake with some good friends. Dear Answer Lady My wife and I recently had a disagree-

ment with a neighbor over a parking space in the condo parking lot. We felt the neighbor was abusing the visitor parking privileges by allowing her boyfriend to use it as a permanent space. Now when we have visitors, there is often nowhere to park. We turned the matter over to the condo board and they upheld our objections, but now she harasses us as we go to our car, shouting from the balcony and, although we cannot prove it, vandalizing our car. We called the police but it seems there’s nothing they can do. What would you do, Answer Lady? — Harassed Dear Harassed Short of moving, your only choice is to make amends. Go to Cape Winds Florist and buy a lovely bouquet of flowers. Then stop of Sunset Liquors for a nice bottle of wine. Knock on her door and ask if you talk about stopping the madness. Remember, being right isn’t always a road filled with accolades. Your only other choice is to wait her out until she turns her wrath on someone else — and she will.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

FRITZ is a shy boy but he’s very nice. He would make a great mouser or barn buddy, if given the chance. He’s currently in the shelter with his sister, Gia. They love to play together and would make a great team! Give them a chance at a life where they can run and play!

«

LIZZY is an adorable calico cuddlebug! She loves to curl up somewhere warm and cozy, and would be a great lap cat. Come to the shelter and see if you can give Lizzy a forever home!

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

W

ell, it’s oficially summer. Okay, maybe to you Cape May locals summer isn’t for a couple weeks (you know, when schools let out and the all the kiddies hit the beaches). But for us ilm lovers, it’s summer. And yes, things may have already started with the new Avengers movie, Mad Max, Furious 7, and other new blockbusters. But let’s look down the pipeline and see what’s in store this summer. Since early reviews for Tomorrowland and Poltergeist are less than enthusiastic, let’s skip right over to some less publicized ilms that show more promise. The Yes Men are Revolting (release June 12): Okay, anyone who reads this column regularly (Aunt Theresa, thank you, I know you’re the only one—and I love you for it!) knows that the last ilm from these two pranksters, The Yes Men Fix the World (2009) was a favorite of mine. There is just something about Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonnano pulling the wool over corporate America’s eyes that makes me crack up.

Coming this summer, Bichlbaum and Bonnano in The Yes Men are Revolting. They’re part activists, part comedians— and all out fun to watch. A Pigeon Sat on a Branch (release June 3): Like his previous features, Songs from the Second Floor (2002) and You, The Living (2007), director Roy Andersson explores “being a human being.” This black comedy is being heralded as “meticulously crafted and dreamlike.” In the Swedish ilm, two hapless novelty salesmen tour the human condition, unfolding it in absurdist episodes: a sing-along at a 1940s beer hall,

a randy f lamenco teacher, a thirsty King Charles XII of Sweden en route to battle, and a diabolical metaphor for the horrors inf licted by European colonialism. And so you don’t think I’m “dis’n” the pop movie scene, here are a few to consider: Ted 2 will play off the original, which can only be described as a guilty pleasure of mine. Love & Mercy inds two of my favorites, John Cusack and Paul Dano, playing the same music legend, Beach Boys’ lead arranger Brian Wilson. Jurassic World brings back the dinosaurs in a new adventure, and Entourage escorts the television classic to the big screen. If you want to stay local, Cape May Film Society is hosting many great ilms this summer. Join us for an exclusive look at our ilm camp masterpieces on Friday, June 26! The classic Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell ilm His Girl Friday will screen June 1, and the Buster Keaton silent ilm The General will play with live organ music August 9. Email capemayilm@hotmail. com for details.

You may love the shore, but you’ll love our mountains too! mountainvalleyrealtyllc.com • 570-723-8484mymountaincountry@gmail.com
