From November 7 to 10, Cape May enjoyed a spectacular, biannual, world-class event: The Exit Zero Jazz Festival. From second line parades in the street to concerts in venues throughout town, the island came alive with music by international touring artists. Among the headliners were The War and Treaty, Manhattan Transfer and Take 6, two iconic musical groups with 20 Grammys between them. Missed out on the magic? No worries — the jazz fest will be back in April. Top: New Breed Brass Band Left: Phillybloco

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

The Pink Sea-Through Fantasia (actual name) sounds sexy. But the mouth, anus and intestines of this sea cucumber are visible from the outside, which is decidedly less sexy. To scare off predators, it employs bioluminescence, aka it glows in the dark. We have no idea how big this guy can get, since it was only just discovered in 2007.

Commissioned in 1928 by the Meerwald family of South Dennis, the AJ Meerwald is New Jersey’s official tall ship and a common sight off the coast of Cape May. At 91 years old, the former oyster schooner was once an instrument in one of the state’s most valuable industries. During World War II, she was reinvented as a fire boat meant to respond with water pumped from the Delaware Bay should Philadelphia be bombed. Today, the wooden vessel, based at the Bayshore Center at Bivalve, offers rides and educational programming to tourists and appears in Cape May every late summer.

The Nickel Boys By Colson Whitehead Two boys are sentenced to a hellish reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida. This brilliantly told novel is based on a real — and really horrifying — school.

Here’s what the EZ team had for breakfast this week

E

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: Exit Zero Filling Station. The occasion: Breakfast, which is now being served from 8am every day! What is Exit Zero doing expanding its hours at a time when everyone else is cutting back? We, uh, get hungry early, and we simply can’t hold off until 9 or 10. The concept: Just the usual combo of gas station, retail store, publishing company and restaurant/bar serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. We’re getting pretty well known for our high-quality burgers and curry dishes. We’ve been receiving a lot of reviews lately along the lines of “Best meal I’ve ever had at a gas station!” Or: “Who would have thought you’d find THIS at a gas station!” We’ll take it. The vibe: Retro meets modern, we’re clean and quirky. Right now, we’re also cozy. Yes, the fireplace is ON and there is most likely a Hallmark Christmas movie playing on the TV. (You know, the one where a small-town girl falls in love with a big-city guy, and helps him discover the beauty of Christmas…) The app: We ordered a starter of chicken and waffles, hold the waffles. So, okay, yes, this technically means we ordered an appetizer for breakfast of fried chicken. Don’t knock it ’til you try it. The mains: The breakfast sandwiches come in regular, plus or premium (see what we did there?). We opted for a premium selection, the Green Eggs and Ham, which is served on a fluffy, buttery brioche roll with two fried eggs, thick-cut Canadian ham and a green tomato marmalade plus provolone cheese. We also ordered the Cheesy Thai bowl, which is two eggs and goat cheese with eggplant, red peppers, sharp cheddar cheese sauce, and basmati rice mixed together in a yellow curry sauce (with shrimp and avocado, if you so choose). The conversation: We discussed the book Jack is reading, about zombies, politics and armageddon, naturally. The happy hour: Just a heads up — it happens daily from 4-6pm, featuring some super-duper food and drink specials.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

t’s mid-November. That time of year we try to drag the 2019 season across the finish line, fill those dead weeks between the Exit Zero Jazz Festival and Christmas, before hibernating in January and February, happy the season is over yet eager for the next one to start where we’ll repeat the process ad infinitum until the asteroid hits and, man, November is depressing. But you can ward off that depression by hanging out with me at Exit Zero Filling Station! Tuesdays (Bill Caterini), Fridays and Saturdays (Tim Joyce) I’ll be standing in the corner singing all your acoustic favourites (just felt like using the snobby English spelling), using my angelic* voice to lull you into a state of near-euphoria while you munch on, first, the balsamic-glazed brussels sprouts, followed by Bangkok noodle with shrimp. These really should be the only two things on the menu. Live music nights at EZFS have been great, so come on out for a bite, a beverage and a tune. *Angelic if angels smoked a pack a day and favoured Irish whiskey. This past weekend, hundreds of jazz and

jazz-adjacent folk filtered through the ol’ Filling Station to enjoy their complimentary meal, and not one of them made fun of us for playing James Taylor and Billy Joel! They were all pretty nice. And tranquil. And relaxed. And sedate. How to tell your restaurant is full of musicians and tended by barkeeps who are also musicians: LSU-Alabama are playing and Food Network is on the TVs. Was good to see World’s Worst Ref Matt McGaffney out the other night at EZFS. As ever, he was surrounded by beautiful, gawk-

ing women, the handsome bastard. Matt is a recent convert to my Beatles tribute band. He credits his mom’s fold-out eight-track player and stack of Beatles eight-tracks for his lifelong fandom. For me, it was a little suitcase record player and a stack of Elvis 45s. “You ain’t nothin’ but a hound dog…” I was transfixed. Sidenote: As I write, I have somehow stumbled upon my wife Cathrine’s EP from her mid-80s band, The Moderns. It is a riot of cliches from that era — electronic drums, vapid lyrics, everything synthed to death. But damn if she doesn’t sound amazing. Still does, as she regularly (rightfully) steals the spotlight at EZFS. I did not want the aquatic center. I voted against the aquatic center. I lost. What I will not do is spend the next three years holding my breath and stomping my feet until the aquatic center is overturned. Learn from me. #WaterResistance. For the second time in three weeks I made a Sunday stop at Eat Well in North Cape May (Bayshore and Shunpike) and for

the second time in three weeks they delivered. I mean, I picked up the food, they delivered on flavor... you know what I mean. The tomato-basil and potato leek soup were excellent, the grilled chicken on ciabatta and turkey Cuban on rye were sublime, but best of all were the fresh loaves of olive and rosemary bread, which barely lasted a day in our house and are the reason any low-carb diet attempt on my part is doomed. Next time you’re out shopping, swing by Eat Well and support this local, family-owned business. Wawa won’t miss you. Magazine delivery was pure agony this week as my shoulder woes worsen. By the time you read this I will have seen Dr Kevin McHale (not the former Celtics player, but was head trainer of the Cheating Bastard New England Patriots), but Barb Marino’s recent Facebook posts about “full wall tears”, “anchors” and “PAIN” have me considering just lopping the damn thing off. Plus, I’d lose a solid 25 lbs. I’ve become quite a fan of the overnight shift on 101.5 WCFA-LP, though it got a little too wavey-gravy-psychedelic on me this week. I never really understood the appeal of that style of music, but I also own Debbie Gibson tapes, so maybe I’m not the best arbiter. Kudos of the Week: To 101.5’s Sandy McCullough and Rick Ferrante for playing an actual Squeeze song on the actual radio in recognition of founding member Chris Difford’s birthday. Booooo! of the Week: To Sandy and Rick. Having only one Squeeze song in your catalog (“Tempted”) is borderline sonic negligence. Stop it. Mission Accomplished of the Week: Took my son Owen back to Rowan (yes, we know, it rhymes) last Sunday and stopped at the Villas Wawa. From the moment I walked in, the lady behind the counter eyeballed me; deli to coffee station to soft drinks. When I finally got to the register, she asked, “Are you Terry O’Brien?” I nodded warily and she said, “Why are you always making fun

November 14, 2019 of my Wawa? I’m a beach tagger and I read your column every week and you’re always making fun of my store and I told myself the next time I saw you I would say something.” And now you did. The Terry O’Brien Owes John Cooke a Drink Watch: Week three. Thanks to everyone who told me in person or tagged me on the social media complimenting my column last week. Probably won’t have that problem this week. Apology of the Week: To my online friends for Vaguebooking “Difficult day…” on Monday night. Vaguebooking is the art of posting something like “Heartbroken” or “Devastated” or “Difficult Day” with no further details in order to elicit sympathy posts from your friends, as explained by Darla Logue to Friendly Stalker Wendy Redelico. I hate it when other people do it, I did it, I’m sorry. Difficult Day of the Week of the Week: Monday. Lastly this week, and the reason for the aforementioned difficult day, it is with great sadness that I inform you that the 9th Annual Beatles Night, Cape May on MLK & President’s Day Sundays in 2020, will be my final as a tribute band leader. As much fun as it’s been singing the best songs of the Beatles, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Prince with Love Me Dudes, The Strangers and The Terry O’Brien Band, the worsening of my tinnitus and increase in overall hearing loss have made the decision for me. I watched my stepfather sit in front of the TV with the volume on 100 and his hearing aids maxed out for long enough to know I do not want to go down that road. While I will continue with the acoustic music (with special ear plugs, if you hear me go wonky now and then), my ears just can’t take the pounding that comes with standing in front of a full band any longer. And, well, that realization was difficult. And I am sad. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am to purchase a camera. One that, if my manservant Kitchener is to be believed, will transform my life. Make no mistake: Kitchener is no more reliable than yon Scotch brute who owns this very rag (as well as a rather splendid café) but if there’s one thing both have in common, it’s their ability to predict the next technological marvel (the Celtic thug is, I am told, preparing to transform his gasoline pumping station the moment peak oil production happens, and the entire forecourt will flip upside down, revealing shiny new charging stations for those smug people in their insufferable electrical vehicles). Kitchener is the man who foretold the personal computer, bringing a young Steve Jobs to see me, offering a half share in his company for $100. I upbraided the polo-necked imp for calling his company after a fruit, and sent him packing. “That’s the last we’ll hear of you!” I predicted, as Kitchener shook his head wearily and let his left hand stray unconsciously to the stiletto dagger he carries in his waistband, for the day he considers me to have lost my marbles.

(One night after one too many single malts in the Brown Room, I swore that I would rather die than grow decrepit, and may have sworn a blood oath with Kitchener that he should facilitate my end, if so needed.) The small matter of my impending assassination aside, I was pausing on my morning constitutional recently to photograph a mob of gulls attacking a late-season Shoebie, accompanied by one of my great grandchildren. That feckless lad watched me set up the tripod, insert a glass plate and order

all concerned to remain motionless for 60 seconds. The gulls, with whom I have an understanding, obeyed, but the Shoebie, who was shrieking mightily, flailed such that the resulting image resembled nothing so much as a flock of posing birds atop a mini tornado. “Great great grandfather,” the lad said with a judgmental sigh. “You can simply purchase a digital camera that will take an image instantly, and send it to your phone.” I decided not to thrash the upstart, but instead called Frank’s Imported Electrical Devices Emporium in Ocean City. I usually purchase my ticker-tape machines from Frank and he promised to send “the latest model, from Japan” over to me by courier. The camera is a sleek thing of chromed beauty, no larger than my hand, and I took 999 stellar images of Cape May and hit the button indicated. Oddly, I have been sitting by the telephone in the study, idly twirling the dial and occasionally lifting the Bakelite receiver to my mouth and ear and asking, “Are my photographs not ready, damn your ears!?” But not a single thing has come out.

rime shows dominate television, and true crime podcasts are dominating earbuds. Since 2014, when Sarah Koenig’s Serial showed commuters how distracting a podcast could be, listeners have embraced In the Dark, My Favorite Murder and Criminal, immersing ourselves in murder as we go about our days. Does modern life include an increase in murderous thoughts? Fear not. Apparently, we are no more murderous than our forebears. Humans have always been a bloodthirsty bunch. We enjoy crime stories and their accompanying rush of adrenaline, especially when the bad guy is caught in the end. Long nights and cold weather make these stories more enjoyable, according to researchers at the British Library. They unearthed dozens of out-of-print, century-old crime novels linked to the Christmas holidays, with titles like Mystery in White and The Christmas Card Crime. The Library released new editions of 40 such novels, with covers inspired by 1930s train posters, perfect for reading with “a good log fire roaring, a glass of mulled wine,

[and] a mince pie.” In most, heavy snow has trapped a group of strangers together in a remote location at Christmas. A mysterious death occurs, and everyone has a motive for murder. An unlikely detective steps up to solve the crime, and the mystery is cleared before the snow, providing a satisfying end for fans of classic murder mysteries. Cape May Stage pokes fun at this format with Murder for Two: The Holiday Edition. It’s Christmas Eve, a novelist has been murdered, and an ambitious investigator hopes to make the guilty party “sing.” This two-actor show adds a piano to all the standard elements of a murder mystery — a dark and

stormy night, a big house and a long list of suspects. Two actors play all the parts, along with the piano, and music and puns put the “laughter in manslaughter.” The play runs Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 and Saturdays and Sundays at 3:00, now through December 29. Tickets are $40. November 22 is Best-Value Night and there is a Cast and Crew Talk-Back on December 13. December 15 is Pay-What-You-Wish. See capemaystage.org for details and to purchase tickets. While you’re there, get a jump on your Christmas list. Buy someone you love a Season Passport so they can see three or six shows next season. Prices begin at $120 for adults. And, if murder isn’t your cup of tea, consider A Congress Hall Christmas, running November 29 through December 29. “Santa and Mrs Claus head to their favorite vacation spot” — Cape May, of course — “for some rest and relaxation.” In and around Congress Hall, they find new friends, some cheerful ghosts and the holiday spirit they need. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for children.

The Movie Column

Arts columnist Tom Sims reviews an Oscar contender, “Harriet”

T

is the season! No, no, there’s still time for turkey and the tree and wreaths and all that. No, it’s Oscar season. That time of year when all the buzz begins. Let me start some now. I’ve seen the first movie I know is going to be in the running for Best Picture. This film tells the story of a true hero. No costume, no superhuman strength. All this hero had to work with was premonitions (she felt were from god), a rif le, unbelievable grit, undeniable truth, and an underground railroad. Harriet is the story of how Harriet Tubman went from runaway slave to champion of the oppressed. It is an amazing story beautifully told. This amazing heroine leaps off the page of the history books through an amazing narrative and acting. Let’s start with the lead, Cynthia Erivo.Erivo is astounding in the role of Harriet. You are drawn into her spirit and live inside her portrayal for a full two

hours. The actor was born in England, and she is on her way to an EGOT. What’s an EGOT? She’s already won an Emmy and Grammy for her work in the 2017 television version of The Color Purple. She won a Tony for her work in the same show as a Broadway musical. EGT? She only needs the “O” for Oscar. This talented 32-year-old would be the youngest to claim the EGOT award lineup. Only a dozen or so have won all four awards, and Erivo would be the youngest

to achieve the goal. It was her portrayal that drew you in, but a meticulous attention to historic detail held your interest. Tubman was born into slavery in 1822. She escaped from Maryland to Philadelphia in 1849, but she did not live a peaceful life in the North. She returned to the South 13 times to rescue some 70 slaves, and she played a prominent role during the Civil War and afterwards. She was a woman placed in history during a time when she was needed most. She did something not many of us have the courage to do: she responded to her call to get involved. What did she receive for that? How about very little to nothing. In a sad ending to her life, she died penniless. It was only after her death that monuments and memorials honored her heroism. With any luck, this film will win big on Oscar night. At the very least, it will raise awareness of this legend and her struggles early in life. Hopefully, it will reinvigorate her legacy. That’s my way of saying it’s a must-see.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Last summer I had a fling with a guy I met on the beach. When I went back home for the winter, he ended it, saying he didn’t want a long-distance romance. I did not see him all summer this year. Then I went to a Labor Day party and he showed up with his new girlfriend. I could not contain my anger. She summers in Cape May and lives much further away than I do. I want to know what the difference is. I wanted to confront him, but my girlfriend stopped me. She said a “scene” would be bad for the hostess. I wanted a scene. I want to embarrass him. I reluctantly agreed to ask you your opinion. – A Woman Scorned Dear Scorned The Answer Lady is quite sure this advice will fall on really, really, deaf ears but here it

Wise answers to perplexing questions

goes… LET IT GO. What point is to be proved with this confrontation? You want to be told to your face that he doesn’t like you well enough to continue a relationship? He gave you an easy out and owes you nothing. And to make a scene at someone’s house or anywhere may be a hint as to why he ended the romance. Do yourself a favor and go to Good Scents and buy yourself some candles to chase away the bad juju currently consuming you. Dear Answer Lady I belong to a book club which meets once

a month. The hostess provides the snacks and refreshments, leaving the rest of us off the hook until it’s our turn. The problem is one of the members cannot cook and serves up the most horrible concoctions. Most of us have learned to eat before we get there. My question is — should we say something? And if so, what? She keeps asking why we don’t eat. I am so tempted to say, “Why don’t you buy something fresh once and try serving that?” I don’t. But it’s not fair. Everyone else puts out a lovely spread, even if it’s just tea sandwiches. — Hangry Reader Dear Hangry The Answer Lady, truth be told, would be tempted to ask said hostess if there is an expiration date on the serving platters, but that is why the Answer Lady is persona non grata with the book club circuit. So, you have a few choices. Eat before you get there. Suffer in silence. Or, our personal favorite — stop at George’s and pick up a lovely humus platter. Tell the hostess you just happen to have bought an extra in case someone is hungry. Your fellow readers will bless you.

Bird Droppings

A

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

s per doctor’s orders, my wife Linda took my blood pressure. It was high enough to give her a coronary. So I self-prescribed a bit of birding to try and get the numbers down to manufacturer’s specs. I didn’t see anything particularly notable, but just the engagement of birds; of seeing these feathered forms going about their daily lives was enough to drop the scale. Carolina Wrens, busily investigating every nook and cranny. They always come in pairs and never seem able to coordinate their search efforts. One enters the shed and finds nothing to interest wrens and the other enters as her mate is exiting. “See,” he good as said as she exited, “I told you so.” Mind I’m only guessing the “he and she part.” Male and female wrens have identical plumage. As do Blue Jays, who, unlike wrens, travel in packs. You see one Blue Jay and you can be certain there are more in the vicinity. Jays travel in convoys for protection. When you go through life clad in electric blue, you make

an easy target for hunting eyes. The jay’s best defense is compounded vigilance. Many eyes see danger better than two.And when a jay sees danger, they bray an alarm, phonetically rendered jay…jay…jay. You hear it and you can bet there is a hawk nearby. Other birds ignore a jay’s warning at their peril. Mourning Doves seem ever slow on the uptake as the piles of dove feathers beneath our feeder attest. It was raining as I walked and many birds were under cover, but not so the Yel-

low-rumped Warblers, whose high metabolism forced them to forage. The cedar forest near our home vibrated with their darting forms. Gulls, too, are impervious to rain and simply watching their languid, wheeling forms dropped my blood pressure 10 points at least. Actually, I’m surprised the American Medical Association does not recommend birding to their patients with hypertension. There is a funny story about Roger Tory Peterson being told by his eye doctor that he needed glasses. When the celebrated ornithologist asked whether there wasn’t some exercise he might try to strengthen his vision, the doctor suggested bird watching. Another celebrated birder, Phoebe Snetzinger, was diagnosed with terminal cancer and told she had months to live. She took up birding and died years later in a car crash in Madagascar in the process of adding to her record setting World Life List. The one thing birdwatching does not cure is the common cold. I know because I have one now. The product of going out in the rain, perhaps.

Low Inventory = Sellers’ Market! Thinking of listing your property? With the lowest inventory in several years, it’s best to choose a Designated Sellers’ Representative Specialist, like Joseph (Jody) Alessandrine, SRS. WHAT JODY’S PAST SELLERS SAY:

“In all of the numerous real estate transactions, I never remembering appreciating so much a realtor’s service.” — Mark G. “Jody, it was because of you and your willingness to hold open houses, that we sold our house quickly and for top dollar. “Ed Connolly is our agent at Coastline Realty in Cape May, handling an investment property we have at Cape May Point. My wife and I are relatively new to the process and Ed has provided (and continues to provide) much helpful advice to improve the experience for all concerned. He is, of course, polite and respectful, but more than that we have the distinct impression that he personally invested in having us understand how we can succeed and how he can help. We are grateful for this personal attention and look forward to working with him for many years to come.”
