Honoring The Memory Of Andy The fabulous total of $27,000 was raised from the annual Paddle Out in honor of late firefighter Andy Boyt. The money goes to the Lt Andy Boyt Memorial Fund, established by Andy’s widow, Michelle. The fund assists various local groups such as the food bank and VFW, while an annual donation is made to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Notable among the donations this year was a fantastic sum of $5,280, given by the folks at Flying Fish Studio — they created and sold 528 shirts and donated it all to the fund. THAT is what you calling being a great neighbor. Congratulations to all who get involved.

The costasiella kuroshimae nudibranch is nicknamed “Shaun the sheep” or “leaf sheep” for short, since it resembles, well, a leafy sheep. It’s a shell-less mollusk sea slug (say that five times fast) that feeds on algae. It eats so much it’s able to use chloroplasts from the plant to conduct photosynthesis in its body, turning energy from the sun into sugar to fuel itself. In other words: You’re looking at solar-powered slugs. It’s the only animal in the world with this superpower.
A National Historical Landmark, Cape May is full of Victorian buildings that many believe are haunted — we were featured on Haunted Towns, a television program on Destination America. Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
urns out that running a publishing company, a restaurant, a retail story and a goddamn gas station takes up quite a lot of time. So, for those who actually miss my column, my apologies for being absent these past few months. For those who don’t, tough luck, losers... I’m back! Nostalgia is a powerful thing. It makes us long, sometimes achingly, for something we used to cherish but can no longer have. I think you can also say that nostalgia can cloud your judgement. That’s how I’m explaining the ridiculous reaction (from some people) to the announcement last week that Cape May was getting a new beachfront hotel. Cape May is a popular seaside resort, a place where people come to have a relaxing vacation, away from their everyday lives. In seaside resorts, hotels are not foreign objects. They’re part of the landscape. In fact, you could say it’s surprising that it’s been more than half a century since a brand-
new hotel was built here, given the city’s popularity as a resort town. So I’m excited to see that the ICONA group is building a hotel on the site of the Beach Theater. Why? Because, firstly, Cape May is not overflowing with accommodations. As the popularity of the resort has continued to grow, the number of rooms hasn’t. Plus, the Beach Theater site has been in a terrible state for decades, thanks to former owners,

the Frank family, who clearly cared very little for the building’s place in the community, allowing it to fall into terminal decline. Yes, I was sad when the actual theater was demolished in 2011, but it was a structurally compromised fleapit by that stage. Since then, a mixture of retail and food outlets have remained, and some have thrived. The ICONA group also bought (the overall deal was around $10 million) the adjoining property that houses the likes of Aloha Smoothies, Avalon Bagel and Louie’s Pizza. I’m glad to see that a mix of retail and eateries will be included in the new plan, though I wasn’t able to get details from ICONA chairman and CEO Eustice Mita by the time we went to press on Tuesday. There’s been a predictable outcry that the last remains of the iconic Beach Theater will crumble to the ground. But a cinema doesn’t have staying power in Cape May. Yes, people point to the success of Harbor Theater in Stone Harbor, but guess what

Page 12 the big, fat difference is? A liquor license. The fact that you can go enjoy dinner (with drinks) and a movie is a big draw. In fact, a licensed restaurant plus cinema is becoming a growing attraction locally — the same company that transformed the Stone Harbor theater is doing the same in Ventnor, 40 miles up the Parkway. Due to what I regard as unfair New Jersey laws, Cape May is limited to liquor licenses based on its year-round population. That’s fine for a town in, say, north Jersey, where the population remains steady year-round. But Cape May grows from about 3,300 to around 60,000 in the summer. As a result of that law, liquor licenses are very rare breeds in town, and if/when one DOES become available next, you would have to pay north of $1.25 million. Do I have misgivings about the ICONA development? Only that the continuing popularity of Cape May has led to a steady, and steep, increase in pricing. I was speaking to a local hotel executive who told me it cost up to $8,000 for a family to stay at their place for a week. I often tell people I live here, but couldn’t vacation here. I just came back from a trip to Portugal and Scotland and paid less than half that, flights included.

I’m hoping that the market will make an adjustment and business owners will see the necessity of keeping Cape May affordable for middle-class families. For years, I have wanted the kind of hip, savvy New York visitors who flock to the Hamptons to instead head south and come here. But I don’t ever want us to become like the Hamptons, where money and status trump everything. Cape May is a chill little town, a place where you can feel the magic as soon as you cross over that bridge. I don’t think the erection of a new hotel is going to change that. Pitchfork-wielding residents never took to the streets when Harry Hirsch decided to build the Montreal on Beach Avenue 50-odd years ago. And the Montreal isn’t exactly a monument to Victorian architecture. Which takes me to my other point. You can’t fake Victorian architecture. Well, okay, you can, but that belongs at Disney. Try it in Cape May and that’ll do more to destroy the authentic Victorian charm of this city than any modern development ever would. It’s that most wonderful time of year... when tickets go on sale for our annual Exit Zero Burns Supper! The event is happening on Saturday, January 25. On that night, 400 people will get together in

There will once again be great Celtic music from Pittsburgh’s the Bastard Bearded Irishmen as well as the pipers and drummers of the Nae Breeks band. Here’s what the EZ team had for dinner this week
E
very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: Union Park Dining Room. The classic American BYO on Beach Avenue that’s open from 5pm on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the winter. The company: We dined with Jim and Betty Moffat as well as Dave and Christina Clemans, all of whom have been leaders in Cape May preservation projects and are generally fine and upstanding citizens. The vibe: Picture a spacious dining room with mahogany furniture and antique fixtures. How romantic! The apps: A delicate Caesar salad, rock shrimp with grilled corn and chipotle aioli, Cape May Salts and pork belly with caramelized duroc pork. Plus, affable co-owner Bob Dimitrov sent us crab tacos and a taste of perfectly cooked duck breast. The consensus: Mouthwateringly good. The conversation: We discussed the excellent new play Seared, set in a commercial kitchen and playing off-Broadway in New York. It stars, according to the Moffatts, Jack’s doppelganger. (We also talked about the benefits of Park and Ride versus driving into the city — totally worth it.) Then we moved on to the movie Big Night, aka one of the best films about cooking ever made. (Thanks to the gentleman across the dining room who shouted out its name when we struggled to remember… apologies for talking so loud!) Dave, jazz aficionado, discussed his affinity for the musician Ben Webster (who he promises to play for Diane, the philistine of the group). And, finally, we discussed travel — is everyone in Cape May visiting Portugal this month or does it just seem that way? The mains: Included North American lobster; a beautiful salmon with a crab cucumber salad and apple quinoa on the side; boneless short rib that was “tender and succulent,” according to Jack; and sirloin of lamb. Kudos to executive chef/co-owner John Schatz. The deal: A $39 prix-fixe menu allows you to try three courses, including dessert, from 5-9pm. We highly recommend it! The hot tip: Union Park is serving Thanksgiving dinner, if you’d rather spend more time savoring your food than prepping it. There is a traditional turkey dinner on the menu, as well as some less traditional options. Grilled lamb loin with andouille sausage, anyone?

I
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
had a dream that I took all these detailed notes for the column this week and that writing it was going to be a piece of cake, 15-20 minutes tops. I then woke up and opened Google Drive to the literary equivalent of a monkey clanging cymbals. And after three hours staring at the screen, this paragraph is all I’ve produced. So… should be a good read this week. Pearl Clutching of the Week: With all the social media sturm und drang over the sale of the Beach Theater (and surrounding) property, you’d think they were knocking down the Statue of Liberty and putting up a Wendy’s. Amidst all the pining and hand-wringing, let’s not forget that place was barely habitable in the ’90s, and an actively hostile place to watch a movie in the ’00s after hatcheting it into four screens while retaining all the amenities and charm of a ’70s porno theater. I’m sure the Icona 2 (IIcona, if they let me name it) will be a beautiful hotel and produce lots of tax revenues so the I Can’t Believe My Taxes Paid For the Repaving of the Washington Street Mall crowd will just have to find some-
thing else to cry about on Facebook. (Though I will definitely be pouring one out for Louie’s Pizza.) Terry Owes John Cooke a Drink Watch: Week 5. (John, I can’t buy you a beer if you don’t come to Exit Zero Filling Station to punch your card. And I refuse to let this Sword of Damocles hang over me forever.) Sore Shoulder Watch, Week 12: Finally got in to see sports medicine guy, Dr Kevin McHale (former head trainer of the New England Pat... BOOOOOOOOOO!!!). He ran me through a battery of range-of-motion tests, which hurt,
but I passed, as he nodded quietly. He then proceeded to jam a thumb into my shoulder joint. Sparks filled my eyes as my knees buckled and I clung to consciousness. He smiled and said, “Wanted to make sure you weren’t faking.” I replied, “I don’t like you.” Anyway, I hope to get an MRI and more answers some time this week. (An MRI… so adult.) EZFS Customers of the Week I: Alex and Lynn Sosik, who enjoyed some acoustic music from O’Brien & Joyce while they dined on curries, then chided me for always being late with my column. I told them I’m never late; I always write exactly when I intend to. I don’t care how much annoyance it causes Jack Wright. These things can’t be rushed. EZFS Customers of the Week II: Bob and Irene Tomaszewski, who came in for drinks on Tuesday and gave me the highest praise possible for my column. “It’s pretty funny sometimes.” I now know what I want chiseled on my tombstone. “Here Lies Terry O’Brien. She then asked if Bill Caterini (my Tuesday night wing man) and I play weddings. “Of course,” I answered. She said, “Great! Now I just need to find a husband.” Katie is a very confusing person. How To Be An EZFS Customer of the Week: Pay a large compliment to the author of this column, leave a gratuitous gratuity in his tip jar and make sure he takes down your name. It’s that simple! Unfortunately Hilarious Compliment of the Week: “You look a little like Meatloaf!” Public Service Announcement: O’Brien & Joyce are our last names. Joyce is not a girl, you dummies. It’s Tim. Tim Joyce. Yeesh, maybe we should just go back to TNT… Song of the Week: “Code of Silence” by Billy Joel, heard overnight on delivery on 101.5 WCFA-LP and now I just know Program Director Ray Crew is reading this column. (Play “Famous Last Words” at midnight on Wednesday so I know it’s real…) Days Without Candy Crush: Seven. And I’m doing fine. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go arrange everything in threes by color. Summary of My Thoughts on the Impeachment Inquiry: (Long, wet fart noise.) Movie of the Week: Midway is a rousing, old-fashioned WWII movie, the likes of which we haven’t seen since probably John Wayne. (Saving Private Ryan, Dunkirk and their ilk, while great, are hardly old-fashioned.) American men and the women behind them doing incredibly brave American things and turning the tide of a war on guts and skill. Who knew the director of Godzilla 97 and Independence Day had it in him? Lastly this week, it is with a heavy but full heart that I inform you I’ve decided there will be no
November 21, 2019 9th Annual Beatles Night, Cape May in 2020. At least not with my band, Love Me Dudes. So, eight years will just have to be enough. While the reasons are numerous and neither one by itself insurmountable, add them up and it was clear to see the Music Gods sending a message; it’s over. I was a performer in Cape May for nearly 20 years before the first Beatles Night, but it was with these shows that my second act began and put the town on notice that if my name was attached to a project, it was probably going to be pretty good. We weren’t sure what to expect when I stole the idea of a Beatles Open Mic night from a friend in Massachusetts, but from Night One it was a huge success. I owe Myra Vassian an unpayable debt for taking a chance on an unknown act in a hospitable climate (January and February at the shore) headed by a smartass karaoke host and letting it breathe. The last eight years aren’t possible without her initial encouragement and I’m sorry our association with Congress Hall ended why and when it did. On the heels of stepping down from The Strangers and The Terry O’Brien Band, this is quite a blow; it would have been nice to play one more show to say goodbye, but here we are. I cede the title of Cape May Tribute Guy, a title I was happy to carry for a long as I did, and look forward to seeing who will fill the void. But it’s not all sadness as I will continue being a Cape May Acoustic Guy for as long as they let me set up my gear at Exit Zero Filling Station and Rusty Nail. And who knows? If things work out I just may pop my head up again. After all, I have unfinished business; those Squeeze and R.E.M. tribute bands aren’t going to form themselves. To quote Dude-Head Pete Baldwin quoting A.A. Milne: “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” (Also, can’t believe I just thought of Dude-Head.) ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
can safely say, we will have a blizzard. This 100 per cent accurate prediction, comes without the usual need for soothsayers, small animal sacrifice (or the occasional Wildwooder if there are no squirrels slow enough to be netted) or dusting off of the D’Catur family’s prescient Almanac of Certain Things. That last tome is all one really needs, covering as it does, every year up until 2025 (at which time the world ends, or at least Cape May Point — see below) in such detail that were I a betting man, I could profit immensely from knowing the winners of each Superbowl, Word Series, Lottery, World Cup and everything else. The trouble is that the book was written by that notorious old soak, Jackson D’Catur XXIX whose two professions were medicine and newspaper publishing. That, plus his tendency to have a bottle of port for breakfast, made him a man of rare wit, and intelligence, with the sensationalist verbacity of a newspaper man, and the handwriting of a doctor. So when he came to write down his visions, he did so in such a fashion that when
one opens the book, one might be forgiven for thinking a crazed spider had fallen in an inkwell before running around the page in a frenzy. So, with the oceans rising, and those in power simply shrugging on their way to collect their fossil fuel share dividends, it looks like Cape May’s snow days are over. Thus, our purchase of the SnoMatic Blizzard III, bought late one evening on a shopping channel, as surplus from the Tokyo Winter Olympics. All one needs to do, is plug it in, connect to
the water mains and turn the dial, which is in Japanese, but will surely be intuitive. Of course, we did just that, concealing it in the lighthouse at the Point, for a test. I must say, all seems to be going well, for it has guzzled around a million gallons of water, and all of the pressure gages are a reassuring red. My manservant, Smithers, did run in, screaming that the symbol at the extreme end of the dial (which I of course selected, as I do believe that if something if worth doing, it is worth doing in excess) translated as World Self Destruct Thru Snow Apocalypse. By the time I had fetched my Calming Stick, in order to cudgel the man back to his senses, he had sprinted to the machine and turned it off, but worry not — the switch snapped off in his hand and he ran off into the night, howling. All that drama aside, the rumbling underfoot and the steam whistle on top of the straining machine suggest we are due some early snow soon. I think the manual indicates that the level shown on a rather nice pictorial readout is 100 inches, which would be splendid, but I think perhaps it is measured in feet.

s the holiday season approaches, we are reminded that the joy of giving has its limits — sometimes in the giver’s imagination or pocketbook, sometimes in the receiver’s shelf space or tolerance for clutter. We live in an age that celebrates the “life-changing magic of tidying up,” but even Marie Kondo approves of joyful collectors. If you have a collector on your gift list, Cape May is the perfect place to shop. Collectors find joy in gathering and displaying items of interest to themselves or to the world. Whether stamps, figurines, autographs, salt and pepper shakers, or holiday ornaments, collecting is a hobby that combines the thrill of the hunt for rare items with a desire to connect. In the Renaissance era, collectors gathered specimens found by explorers as they conducted scientific studies. Items of academic interest would be displayed in “cabinets of curiosities.” These were rooms full of preserved animals, tusks, shells, butterflies, flowers, minerals, and other examples of the

world’s wonders. From time to time, these rooms would be open to the public, so they might be educated and impressed. By the Victorian era, larger displays had moved to universities and museums, but fashionable homes impressed with a “curio cabinet” to display small conversation pieces. Shop for collectibles at the antique outlets in town, or at the Holiday Crafts & Collectibles Show at Cape May Convention Hall on Friday, November 29 and Saturday November 30, from 10-4. Admission is $2; children under 12 are free. November 30 is also Small Business Saturday, so it’s a good time to visit all the little shops.

The next weekend, December 7 and 8, it’s Cape May Crafts at Christmas at Convention Hall. Hours are 9-4 Saturday and 9-3 Sunday, and admission is a $1 donation to Cape May’s recreation programs. Expect “everything from jewelry to leather goods, from fashion and accessories to water colors.” Prepare for parking to be tricky, as the parade is December 7. Another option for collectible gifts is Congress Hall’s Winter Wonderland, which opens Friday, November 29, and features eighteen artisans in a Christmas-y village, complete with musicians to set the mood. Shop and then relax with a hot beverage on Congress Hall’s veranda. If the people on your list are not collectors, experts suggest consumable items, like jelly, honey, tea, candles, soaps, or fancy cleaning products. Consider organic hand sanitizer for the cold and flu season. Clips and bands for long hair may not be consumable, but they are always disappearing. If all else fails, a reminder of Cape May is always a good idea.

he final production from Cape May Stage’s 31st season is Murder for Two: The Holiday Edition. The play, written by Kinosian and Blair and directed by Hans Friedrichs, is a madcap whirlwind of music, comedy, and dance. The plot, as it thickens, brings to mind the greats of the mystery genre, specifically Mouse Trap. Within moments the performances of Trace Pool as Marcus Moscowicz, our policeman, and Martin Landry, who plays EVERYONE else, transports the audience to a world of musical whodoneit. Moscowicz, our lawman has a deep desire to be elevated to the lofty position of detective. Mr Pool has the opportunity in this role to bring to the stage his musical talents. He plays piano, sings, dances and plays his role to perfection. Marcus is given the opportunity to solve the murder of a well-known author because the detective who should be handling the case is stuck on line, on Christmas Eve, in Macy’s (where else?!) He makes the most of the
opportunity he is given by applying his knowledge of “protocol” to the facts as he gathers them. Add in the performance(s) of Martin Landry as every suspect and it is the perfect recipe for a Christmas delight. Mr Landry is able to bring to life an entire cast, from the crazy shrink from next door, to the older couple who fights at every turn, to the widow of the victim and on to a crazed ballerina and the criminology major niece of the deceased, with almost

no props. A pair of glasses and a cigar are all the props he needs to bring all of these characters to the stage. His ability to portray each character through a hand gesture or a pose is truly phenomenal. The combination of Pool and Landry is not to be missed. Watching them on a piano bench together is the supreme picture of two artists in perfect accord. They bring a tremendous sense of camaraderie to the stage: two artists with a common goal: to bring this hysterically funny story to life. The set design at Cape May Stage continues to delight. One new friend seems to be a bit too friendly. He is fun to hang out with but not every night, and he does not seem to take no for an answer. If I even casually mention that I’ll be somewhere, he pops up. It is especially annoying when I meet a guy that I like. He creeps into the conversation and takes over. I like the guy but not that much. I don’t think he has romantic intentions. I just think he has no friends — and no wonder. What can I do to keep him at a distance? — Feeling Crowded Dear Crowded The best way to get a little distance from this well-intentioned, but rather suffocating friend, is to put the distance

It’s always on us. I like having people over and cooking for them, but I don’t like being taken advantage of. I want to tell him off, but my wife says to shut up and let it go. I know me. Nobody wants to be privy to your sibling rivalry. If you don’t think you can maintain, then next year make reservations at Aleathea’s, the Merion Inn or the Blue Pig. Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
his late in the season, autumn migrants are diminishing in diversity, as are the number of birders attending the Monday morning Meadows walk. I was pleasantly surprised to find a dozen participants to compliment the cadre of eight leaders. Our local leaders know that November is a very exciting time to bird Cape May. Great weather, lots of migrants if conditions are right. Today saw scores of robins overhead and the bushes along the center path vibrated with foraging Yellow-rumped Warblers, many of whom will winter here. Yellow-rumps breed in the boreal forest and winter in assorted habitats across the southern United States. I don’t know how many Yellow-rumps we sighted, but half a hundred is no exaggeration. The miracle that is a Yellow-rumped Warbler is only magnified by numbers. Less than half an ounce, these feathered dynamos leave their forest sanctuary and migrate through the night to seek sanctuary in some patch of habitat that the rising sun unveils to them. Adult birds tend
to go where they did the previous autumn. Juveniles fly on faith alone and the genetic assurance that they are on the right course. Error means death and not a few migrants die, genetic programing or no. Consider the gauntlet of obstacles that lie between northern Quebec and Cape May — miles of utility lines, acres of plate glass windows, roaming cats, to say nothing of energy sapping head winds and courses that lead many birds offshore and to a watery end. It’s no easy job being a journeyman Yel-
low-rumped Warbler, so nature compensates with multiple broods and high nest productivity. She seals the deal by offering a surfeit of food so that birds who survive their trial by migration, survive the winter. In our region the birds feast upon bayberries and poison ivy berries. So next time you opt to tidy up your yard, consider the birds you will be depriving of food should you choose to cut native vegetation in favor of something that does not meet the food needs of native birds. Go native. Help our native birds. They will reward you with their presence and you will be nutured and sustained by a healthy environment. Yellow-rumped Warbler looks pretty dingy now, but in spring they get in their courting cloths, a delight to the eyes. Their departure in April opens the door to the host of neotropical migrants that likewise delight our senses with color and song. You don’t need to pin names to birds to be enchanted by them and right now Ma Nature is serving up Yellow-rumped Warblers, robins and bluebirds as well as a host of wintering waterfowl.
