Ramblings From The Editor

T

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

here is a reason why Congress Hall has recently done almost as much business on the first weekend of December as it does in the middle of August. And that reason is Winter Wonderland, the month-long Christmas knees-up that kicks off this Friday. It’s also likely the main reason why Travel + Leisure magazine just published its list of America’s Best Towns for the Holidays, and included Cape May among the likes of Aspen, Telluride and Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. If you have NOT experienced Winter Wonderland, you’re missing out. If you have kids, or grandkids, it’s a slam-dunk. If you don’t, who cares. You can still enjoy browsing the shopping village, indulge in festive drinks in The Brown Room or on the Veranda rocking chairs. Winter Wonderland kicks off this Friday, December 4 with a tree-lighting and two holiday concerts sung by the Congress Hall Choir. The following day, Saturday, December 5, marks the 50th West Cape May Christmas Parade. That’s a pretty memorable weekend — a fabulous night on the Grand Lawn of Congress Hall, followed the next day by the spectacle of a beloved, iconic parade. So whether

you’re a local or a visitor, get in the holiday mood in one of America’s most festive towns. See you in Wonderland. Speaking of fun, we are really ramping up the Exit Zero Burns Supper. For the first time ever, we are holding it on a Friday. And that’s great news for folks who travel far to attend this event — we often get people from Pittsburgh. In January! The date this time around is Friday, January 22. And there are some more changes. We are holding this 12th annual event at the Ugly Mug AND its sister establishment, Delaney’s Irish Bar and Grille.

³

Why? Because we never have enough room for all the people who want to attend this event, and holding it on a Friday will increase the demand even more. And this way, we get to write a much bigger check to the Exit Zero Jazz Festival, which will be getting all of the proceeds from the event. Which will allow festival founder/ producer Michael Kline to continue attracting world-class talent. You can buy tickets online at ezstore.us or by calling us on 609-770-8479. Don’t wait! Is there any establishment in the world that wastes our time as much as a doctor’s office? I write this having wasted four hours driving to Somers Point to see a specialist — two and a half hours were spent waiting to see this specialist. Eventually, I walked out, a steaming pile of frustration. Thanks to technology, these days restaurants can give you a headsup when your table is going to be ready, and airlines can let you know your flight status. Is it asking too much for doctors’ offices to enter the 21st century and stop wasting patients’ time?

The Old Fogey

D

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

amn that Scotch oaf James Watt and his infernal steam engine to hell! I should NEVER have invited him to Cape May! Anyways, where was I? I was merely adding some names to my ever-evolving “Damn them to Hell” list, which I have Smithers update on a weekly basis according to my whims and memory. Smithers himself appears on the list regularly, and is as often stuck off it a few minutes or hours later, as are most of my household staff, virtually every living (and deceased) relative I have, and around 89 per cent (I keep track) of your good selves. Watt and a great many of his compatriots are on the lis: Scotchmen have those twin talents of (a) inventing things I wish I had invented, and (b) really getting on my nerves. Irishmen are much the same with their endless blather, minus the inventiveness. And those English and their infernal cricket and weak chins! They are ALL on the list! Except for George Orwell: that man combined self-pity and pessimism with

great genius, and could drink The Brown Room bar dry. Of course, it was the “Room 101 Bar” then. Why do my moods matter, I hear you ask petulantly? Well, 11 months of the year they do not (other than in the sense that I tend to financially ruin and physically strike people who offend me) , but December is the month that I compile my Gift List, and as you all know, that list contains great delights and terrors in equal measure. Santa Claus knows Cape May is MY territory, and dare not land his rotund backside anywhere south of the canal for fear of a good hiding.

Anyway, I always thought him more than a little creepy slipping down chimneys and through cat flaps and the like, all homeinvadery. Anyone tries that at the D’Catur Mansion, Young Albert will have his bulging sack before his feet touch the floor. No, my way is the better one: everyone of you who has been good (by “good” I mean showed good manners, and known better than to wear khakis or deck shoes, or annoy me in other small but vital ways) will receive a solid gold doubloon (from Captain Kidd’s treasure, of course: I tire of having no-one to share it with, and have not the time to sit in the cellar letting the gold coins rattle through my hands like that Scrooge McDuck - another damnable Scotchman with nobody to see), whereas anyone whose actions have disgraced this fair city (by saying something kindly about Wildwood in public, for example) will receive a voucher entitling the bearer to a jolly good thrashing at a time of their convenience, or whenever I first see them around town, whichever comes first, really.

The Movie Column

I

Review by Gayle Stahlhuth, Artistic Director, East Lynne Theater

n 1912, many British women struggling to gain the right to vote could no longer be passive. This is where Suffragette begins. Women threw rocks in store windows and bombed high official Lloyd George’s home. Police hounded them, even using hidden cameras to spy on suspects unknowingly – the first time this tactic had ever been used to get evidence. Suffragettes were arrested repeatedly. In prison, they staged hunger strikes and were cruelly force fed. The film ends abruptly in 1913 at the funeral of Emily Wilding Davison (Natalie Press), a real-life militant activist who died from wounds she sustained when she stepped onto the track at Epson Derby during a horse race. Film footage of this tragedy has been studied to try to understand why with no solid conclusions. I like screenwriter Abi Morgan’s theory as depicted in the film. Desperate for media attention, Emily wants to be seen holding a banner “Vote for Women” in front of all those cameras aimed at the race. Ironically her death galvanized the suffrage movement by making headlines around the world.

To place the film in historical context, the National Society for Women’s Suffrage was founded in 1872. By 1918 after women replaced men in the workplace because of World War I, the vote was granted to women over the age of 30 (ten years later the age limit was finally reduced to 21). The film focus on Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan), a fictitious character who since age seven had worked in a laundry under grueling work conditions and sexual abuse. Her co-worker Violet Miller (Anne-Marie Duff) introduces her to the movement and Edith

Ellyn (Helena Bonham Carter) based on the real-life Edith Garrud. Mulligan’s character is a compilation of the lives of several women rolled into one, and Mulligan carries it off. She begins as an observer who believes herself of no importance. The Suffrage movement gives her a purpose, and she will never go back to the laundry or her husband. Meryl Streep portrays real-life activist leader Emmeline Pankhurst, but she isn’t on screen as long as Judi Dench was in Shakespeare in Love. Streep’s picture on the poster will lure people in, but photos of Mulligan, Carter, and Duff (replacing Streep’s picture) would have been more appropriate. Without the acting ability of these three, the film wouldn’t have had a chance. Director Sarah Gavon creates an atmosphere of foreboding, which works well for most of the film. Sorry to say it’s backed up by a flat score by Alexander Desplat. For a compelling depiction of this same history, find PBS’s Shoulder to Shoulder (1974), an excellent miniseries about the movement.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I want to propose to my girlfriend over the holidays, but I’m worried about picking the ring. What if she doesn’t like it? I want it to be a surprise. I’ve already made reservations at The Ebbitt Room. Afterwards, we are going over to The Brown Room where we will sit in front of the fireplace and while we listen to Darin MacDonald play the piano, I will ask her to marry me. What I don’t want is to see a look of disappointment in her face when she sees the engagement ring. What to do, Answer Lady? – Cape Fea Dear Cape Fear First of all, how sweet are you and how lucky is she? No worries mate, this is when your future bride’s besties come in handy. Since not everyone can keep a secret, be careful to choose

Wise answers to perplexing questions

someone who is close to her but who also will keep your confidence. If not a bestie, maybe a sister or her mother. Then relax. The two of you can look forward to a relaxing day of engagement ring hunting. Explore all your options. Start at Henry’s for something trendy and elegant. Move on to Patricia Jackson’s for a custommade ring. Pop over to Mary Ann’s for a vintage option. And when the moment comes... enjoy it. Dear Answer Lady I dread the holidays for one simple reason. In-laws. Attendance at Christmas and, in

fact, all holiday dinners is mandatory at both my wife’s as well as my parents’ homes. Now we have a toddler who gets cranky at being schlepped all over creation. Knowing this is already a stressful concern, my mother has decided this year to schedule her dinner at the same time as my mother-in-law’s. It is a deliberate attempt to marginalize my motherin-law, although she maintains it is to reduce the stress by providing the “only logical choice” for the holiday dinner. I don’t know what to do about it. – Divided Loyalty Dear Divided This is a perfect opportunity for you and your wife to start your own family traditions and order a nice prime rib from either Gaiss’ or West Side markets to prepare at home. Or make reservations at the Merion Inn, which is just like being home. Visit one family in the morning for coffee and the other in the evening for dessert. Your mother will have a screaming meanie fit, but it is time to put your big boy panties on and blame it all on your child. Third option: invite them all to your house for coffee, continental breakfast and present opening.

SCOOBY is an 11 year old lab mix whose family was forced to give him up. He is a sweet older dog who walks nicely on the leash and misses the love and affection of a family. As a senior he is beyond the puppy energy level and would love to settle at your feet and go for quiet walks. He appears to be well mannered around cats and dogs.

«

MEG is a lab mix who returned to the shelter when her was forced to move and could not take her along. Meg is hoping another family will open their hearts to her. She is house and crate trained, walks very nicely on leash so she is a pleasure to take for long walks. Meg could live with other dogs but would prefer a home with know cats.

Bird Droppings

N

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ow it’s down to ducks. Six months ago when autumn 2015 was an anticipation instead of an historic fact, the eyes of birders were attuned to shorebirds, the vanguards of autumn migration. Then came the hosts of migrating songbirds, then migrating hawks. Now, we’re down to ducks whose wedge-shaped flocks drive a wedge between seasons. On one side autumn, on the other winter and skies bereft of possibility and promise. Unless you like waterfowl, which will hold center stage in Cape May until March when many wintering sea ducks and puddle ducks depart to breeding areas in the prairies and Arctic. So enjoy the show at South Cape May and Bunker Pond as scores of waterfowl of multiple species show off their courting finery and vie for the eye of a mate. One of the ways ducks stay warm in winter is through courtship. Not a bad strategy. By the time spring rolls around, the adults will be paired and when the female heads off to her natal region the male follows.

4 MCKINLEY AVENUE, VILLAS

Once the pair reach a suitable tundra pond or prairie pothole, they get right down to the business of procreation. No time to waste in the Arctic, where summers are short. So if you go to Bunker Pond you’ll find ducks that we time share with the native residence of northern Canada. Don’t dawdle. Season’s have a way of moving on. Spring will be here before you know it. A good hard freeze can do the same thing. Dabbling ducks need open water. To

a degree swans act as ice breakers but a bitterly icy stretch can put aquatic plants out of the reach of duck bills. During such freezes, ducks can go off and sit on Delaware Bay but they cannot feed. So don’t dawdle with dabblers. The time to see waterfowl is now, while numbers are high and males are in their courting finery. Pick a warm afternoon. Head over to Cape May Point State Park and treat yourself to the symphony and the show. Symphony? Yes, wigeon make a two not bugle, teal a chirping twitter. The mallards and gadwall are in the rhythm section. Canada geese are on horns. Afternoon lighting is perfect. Bring binoculars and a field guide. When the flock takes off look up. One of the resident bald eagles will be overhead. Eagles like ducks as much as you do. Pete Dunne, leads Monday morning walks in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30am in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He also hosts an introduction to birding every Wednesday 2-4pm at CMBO, 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point.
