Ramblings From The Editor

A

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ny time there’s a boom that makes the ground shake in these parts, people usually take to social media to ask — “Did you hear that? Earthquake? Jet fighter? Alien invasion?” And so on. Well the ground did shake quite a bit this past weekend — Friday and Saturday nights, to be precise. Actually, better add Saturday and Sunday afternoons, too. But the source was not at all mysterious. The activity was all down to the Exit Zero Jazz Festival, which by common consent was one of the greatest, liveliest, most generally successful cultural events ever to have hit America’s Original Seaside Resort. At the centerpiece of the festival was a world-class musician, Wynton Marsalis, whose Jazz at Lincoln Orchestra blew away the audiences who sat at 6pm and 9pm at Lower Cape May Regional’s Schmidtchen (wish it was easier to spell) Theater. Marsalis, in the eyes of many, is America’s greatest living jazz musician. Which makes him the world’s greatest living jazz musician. So the fact that he brought his remarkable orchestra to this little city by the sea is some-

I got to, thanks to a mystery illness that rendered me unable to walk for most of the weekend (less said the better). Which sucked because I badly wanted to see Davina and the Vagabonds — but I reckon they will be back. Speaking of exciting cultural events, the 15th Cape May Film Festival is happening this weekend, November 13-15. The feature highlight is Northern Borders, starring Oscar nominee Bruce Dern. I’m impressed that the festival has attracted the movie’s director to town — Jay Harvey will be giving a talk on Saturday morning. The film festival will be based at West Cape May Borough Hall. For all the details you need, flip over this issue where you will find a 24-page program. Hope to see you there. Major, and I mean major, congrats to Tom Cannuli, a 22-year-old professional poker player from North Cape May who just left Las Vegas $1.4 million richer after finishing sixth in the World Series of Poker. That’s... impressive. And congrats also to Roger Furlin, who didn’t become instantly rich but who did win the vacant seat on Cape May Council in the November 3 election.

³ thing of a cultural miracle. Pin the credit for that on the lapel of Michael Kline, the founder and producer of the jazz festival, a barnstorming gunslinger of a guy who gets things done (while sometimes driving people crazy in the process). Michael told me that Wynton was impressed by his visit. The great man mentioned in an email that, “The audiences for our two concerts were warm, responsive, and absolutely knowledgeable about jazz. The feeling was so communal and comfortable that the orchestra couldn’t help but swing.” The Marsalis concert was the only gig

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

do love a bath. The thought came to me the other night as Kitchener and I reenacted the Battle of Jutland in the tub. I had just scored a direct hit on Derfflinger, and was signaling to Admiral Young Albert (commanding my reserves from the plug end). Through the steam and smoke I could see Kitchener’s red face and wide mustache, and around the edge of the bath, the rest of the household staff, cheering on whichever side their family lineage demanded. I should mention, in case you are picturing us in what might be considered cramped and strange posture, that the tub measures 15 feet in diameter and reaches a depth of a fathom near the plug. Normally I occupy it alone, save for a lifeguard and a personal retainer — more than one D’Catur ancestor has been found floating face down in their bath over the years. Most times overindulgence was the culprit, though assassination is not unknown, so the smarter D’Catur heirs have all of their staff watching each other. I have, as an added precaution, a Scuba tank and flippers concealed

under a secret panel in the shallow end, and the super-wide drain is JUST able to accommodate a man of slim hip such as myself. My faithful manservant, Kitchener, does love our naval reenactments, though more than once I have caught him aiming at me, rather than my fleet: we use live ammunition, and a broadside could take a chap’s eye out, and I will not go into details as to the damage a stray underwater torpedo could inflict. Young Albert usually hangs over the hot tap, where he can bite any craft or person rash enough to sail past. Mostly, though, I simply soak and think:

most of my truly great ideas have come to me in that tub, and I confess some brilliant but ill-conceived ones — scientific study has shown that after exactly 57 minutes in water, not only do a person’s fingers go all wrinkly, but one’s head becomes porous and water plus whatever bubble bath solution one is using seeps in, clouding one’s mental processes. My scheme to make Cape May the world center for rescue apes from TV shows and movies, for example, was compassionate and genius. In practice, 500 neurotic monkeys in little waistcoats riding around town on tricycles was less tranquil than hoped for. On THAT occasion I had to hide under the bathwater breathing from a straw until my staff drove them off with flamethrowers and bananas. And once in a long while I host a bath party: I shall say no more about that, for fear of embarrassing many of you by name. Suffice of to say, if you scent lavender and see a loved one’s hair looking freshly washed, then they have attended. The scamps.

The Activity Column

T

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Treat your Jazz Hangover

is the season for overindulgence. Parties proliferate, and the world invents reasons for you to drink. Wine Wednesday. Pumpkin martinis. Candy cane cocktails. Egg nog. If you’re not careful, you can overdo it, and wind up with a hangover. For those of you lucky enough not to know, a hangover is a sickness that comes after drinking too much alcohol. It’s a morning-after combination of headache, nausea, and sluggishness that makes you question your life choices. The medical term is veisalgia, which comes from combining the Norwegian word kveis — uneasiness following debauchery — with the Greek word for pain — algia. It’s a great word for a horrible feeling. Those of you who don’t drink may fall victim to a food hangover, a similar sickness that comes from eating too much fat, sugar or salt at one sitting. People who normally eat a balanced diet may experience this when they visit friends who are excellent cooks, or escape from a weekend with the parents to an all-night

diner to consume French fries with gravy or that pork roll sandwich that you can’t get in California. Contrary to popular belief, the only cure for a hangover is time. In spite of the many mythical treatments — a big, greasy breakfast, a long run, a good sweat in the sauna, milk thistle — doctors insist that only time will make a hangover go away. (There’s also no magic to preventing a hangover. Those “proven” tips, like drinking water between cocktails and avoiding liquor after beer, only help if they reduce your total consumption.) Even the hair of the dog — a small

serving of whatever you drank the night before — can not cure what ails you. Hair of the dog only works if you are suffering from a jazz hangover. If you overindulged in music last week, more music is your only hope. With the worldclass talent that was in town for the Exit Zero Jazz Festival, it’s hard to find anyone who isn’t aching for more. Even people who didn’t know they liked jazz are reporting a contact high. Great music was everywhere, and you can’t just quit cold turkey. You’re going to need to find more music in Cape May. Tune in to WCFA 101.5 for jazz, especially late nights and Saturday afternoon. Soak up soundtracks at the Cape May Film Festival. Stop in to The Brown Room and let Darin MacDonald entertain you, or step downstairs to the Boiler Room and dance. Visit Peter Shields or the Merion Inn to hear piano with your dinner. Stop by Carney’s for entertainment on the weekend, or Elaine’s for Open Mic Thursday. Firepit Fridays at Willow Creek Winery are still cozy as the evenings get cold. Feed your need for music.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My son is 11 years old and very responsible. We’ve had a dog for three years and he has been good about taking care of Lady. But now he wants a hamster. I hate rodents and the thought of that furry thing in the house creeps me out. I’ve tried talking him out of it, but he’s always been very decisive. Is there any way you can think of to get out this? — Cornered Dear Cornered The simple answer is no, you cannot get out of it because the Answer Lady suspects a promise of “if you take care of Lady you can have another pet” is lingering in your son’s memory banks. That said, The Answer Lady does suggests you buy ONE hamster, not two. Two soon becomes three and then one morning three has gone back to two and the father

THE

hamster’s beady eyes are staring at you, saying, “That’s right. I did it. What are you going to do about it.” And then you’ll have to explain that… so one hamster. Meanwhile, you probably need a drink. Pop over to Fins for Martini Wednesday and get yourself a $5 martini while contemplating the joys of parenthood. Dear Answer Lady I recently moved into a new neighborhood in town and as the houses are very close together I wanted, from the get-go, to put up a stockade fence for privacy. One of the

MAY DAY SPA & HOLISTIC CENTER

reasons I bought the house was to enjoy a private garden without the intrusion of prying neighbors. I say this because as a good neighbor I went over and introduced myself and explained what I was going to do. I have since experienced nothing less than the cold shoulder. The workers won’t even be able to use her yard to install the fence. Should I rethink this? I hate have bad feelings one week into a new chapter in my life. — Fenced In Dear Fenced In The Answer Lady suggests you keep in mind the adage, “Good fences make good neighbors.” This blowup likely would have occurred whether the issue of the fence had been brought up or not. This is probably a neighbor with nothing to do except get the binoculars out, and you have usurped that plan. That said, after the fence is installed, pop over to Cape May Honey Farm, buy yourself a jar of honey with vanilla beans, make yourself a cup of tea with honey, have a scone dripping with honey and enjoy. Then breathe and enjoy the peace of your fenced-in backyard. Don’t let anyone stomp on your dream.

Bird Droppings

Y

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

esterday it happened again. I noticed two birders on the hawk watch platform whose faces were contorted by frowns — and yet, smiles are the typical fall fashion in Cape May. Sizing up their binoculars I quickly deduced the problem. Both instruments were just a step ahead of the Smithsonian with reserved spaces right next to the trilobite display case. Taking the Zeiss 8x42 SF binoculars from around my neck I entreated them to take a look and see what puts the ‘good’ in good optics. Then I watched as the frowns morphed into appraising ‘Oh’s. Yes, I assured them, that is what is supposed to happen when you bring binoculars to your eyes. “Now I understand why people are calling out details on birds that I never see,” said one. With the optics they were using, they were cheating themselves every time they trained them on a bird. You, too, reader if your binoculars are more than 20 years old. Enlightened and impressed, my birding duo vowed to stop by the Northwood Center

4 MCKINLEY AVENUE, VILLAS

in Cape May Point and check out the array of instruments that put a measure of WOW in every look. Of course, the trick is finding WOW at a price that doesn’t make you say “ouch.” It’s possible. Premium instruments start at $399. Tell them Seymore sent you. They’ll know what glass I’m talking about. And remember, binoculars are only expensive for one day. After that every look is free and the world of color, detail and animation they confer is beyond price.

2 W. TAMPA AVENUE, VILLAS

Nature lover’s rancher with Adorable 3 bed, 2 bath 2bd,1 ba with storage. Open beach cottage. Separate floor plan and hardwood living quarters with 2 bed. flooring. $129,900 Block to the Bay. $122,900

When was the last time you had a bit of WOW in your life? Too long, I’ll wager. Don’t delay, autumn migration is winding down. There’s only a few more weeks of migrating eagles and buteos left. When they’re gone, they’re gone. Of course, waterfowl will be here all winter and the plumage of waterfowl, seen through premium optics, will sear itself into your brain. One last tip — don’t settle for less if the glass you really want is a reach above your budget. If you settle, you’ll just replace them later and that is money wasted. If you want to be an informed consumer I suggest you pick up a copy of Pete Dunne on Birding There’s a whole chapter on optics. Speaking of Dunne, he leads an every Monday morning bird walk in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30am in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He also hosts an introduction to Birding Short Course every Wednesday 2-4 pm at the Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point.
