Ramblings From The Editor

J

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

OE Carney, owner of the iconic beachfront restaurant and bar that bears his name, dodged a bullet on Tuesday when he appeared at Cape May’s City Hall for an inquisition that should never happened. Let’s call this exhibit Y in a dossier of evidence that proves that Cape May’s administration, led by the 3Ms — City Manager Bruce MacLeod, Mayor Ed Mahaney and City Solicitor Tony Monzo — is bent upon conflict and manipulation, rather than compromise and cooperation. Carney was there to fight for the future of his business since the city had on its agenda a resolution that would amend his liquor licence, forcing him to stop serving drinks at midnight, a couple hours earlier than previously allowed. When Carney spoke to me a couple weeks ago about this issue, he said it would be “a death sentence” for his business. Fortunately, logic won through on this day, but let me tell you something. I may not possess extra-sensory powers, but I’ve been a journalist for more than 30 years and I know a witch hunt when I see one — as do you if you spend any time watching the nonsense that swirls around City Hall — for further evidence, see the file marked,

BIRD

IS THE WORD A CAPE MAY CARTOON

‘Sheehan, Robert’. Want to know what really happened? Mahaney had it in for Carney after the two clashed outside the bar around 2am last September. Why the mayor was crawling around the streets of town at that time is anyone’s guess. But he ordered a police officer to close Carney’s that night, something he is spectacularly unqualified to do. Earlier this year, Carney had the cojones to call out the mayor in an unflattering column I wrote about Mahaney (there have been a few). Was Ed after revenge? You bet he was. But he didn’t get the outcome he sought. This

is because the meeting was held in public, at the request of Carney’s attorneys, who hadn’t been able to find a resolution behind closed doors, in a previous meeting with the 3Ms. In other words, the 3Ms were set on cutting back the Carney’s liquor licence, but I guess they hadn’t expected to make their play in public. Nevertheless, Monzo set out his stall immediately, making the case that Carney’s attracted a lot more police attention than any other bar or restaurant in town. But as Carney’s lawyers argued, there were no backup reports to shine any light on the 78 incidents logged by Cape May Police Department in or around Carney’s last year. And as Bob Boyd, a former police chief in Cape May who came to town 56 years ago, put it near the end of the meeting, Cape May is no Dodge City. He said Carney’s was an extraordinarily well-run business and that “this is as calm as I’ve ever seen Cape May.” A victory for common sense and democracy. And a bloody nose for our vindictive, vengeful mayor. Just another day in Cool Cape May. Now get out there and enjoy the glorious Fourth in America’s Original Seaside Resort.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

do adore a birthday extravaganza. The thought came to mind after I set out the other evening to find the grand affair held in our fair city to celebrate the burly Publisher of this very rag entering his sixth decade on this earth. I had no address as such, but employed Cape May’s tried and tested party-finding method whereby you merely stop and listen then head to where the music and shrieking is loudest (this is not a tactic that should be used in Wildwood, I caution you, lest you wish for an early death). So, imagine my delight when I came across a colossal billowing white silk tent on the beach! Inside, there were white horses, glitter balls, chocolate fountains ten feet high and when the birthday boy himself came in, he was dressed like Marie Antoinette, complete with a tiny galleon made of silver and ivory perched atop his hat. The theme seemed to be one of pure excess, and I was rather glad I had slipped into my best cape before leaving the D’Catur Mansion. Well, I say

best, when really I mean most elegant: my actual best cape is the one that allows me to glide down from any high vantage point at night, to deliver swift and painful justice on the heads of anyone causing trouble in our fair city. THAT cape is not so much pretty as functional: the one I had on for the birthday party was a little number made from spider silk and diamonds salvaged from the hold of the Concrete Ship. Well, a great time was being had by all, and I saw Cape May’s finest in attendance. After the dancing bears took the

stage (a gang of burly fellas from New York City), I went to congratulate the host, and found to my surprise that he had adopted a peculiar English accent for the evening, rather than his usual rough Scotch brogue. Also, as I clapped him on the shoulder and called him “laddie” (Scotchmen all love being called “laddie”), he was mewling “I’m Elton!”. “I like your nerve, laddie!” I replied, chucking his cheek so hard he squealed. Afterwards, full of good cheer, I stuck my head into the new and rather fine “Cookhouse” dining establishment, where to my surprise another, less slick but still fine celebration was going on. I am not sure the reason, but there was another round Scotchman singing a well known hit by those not-handsome Scotch Proclaimer twins. Well, there’s such a thing as too much Scotchness for one evening, so I bid them farewell, and with a twirl of my cape, I dropped a smoke bomb and made off into the night with a half bottle of bourbon and a handful of tiny hamburgers.

H

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, watch the fireworks in Cape May!

ere’s the thing about the fireworks - it’s not really about the fireworks. Sure, they’re impressive and patriotic, and John Adams would be happy to know that we are all marking Independence Day as he hoped we would, with “pomp and parade... and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other.” But some of my most memorable Fourth of July celebrations have involved firework “failures.” If it’s rainy, but the fireworks aren’t canceled, crowd together under an umbrella and get a little wet. Giggles will follow. Or pile into the one car fortuitously parked on Beach Avenue and peer out of the foggy windows. Someone is sure to start telling stories. If the display is delayed for an unknown reason, share tidbits of news with nearby strangers, which leads into real conversation, which leads into new friendships. Fireworks are a no-lose proposition. Great things happen before the fireworks even start. On the beach, as the mist swirls, let the teenagers tell ghost stories. Watch

the sedate uncles revert as they toss a glowin-the-dark football. Pretend not to notice as the couples fade off for a few moments of romance in the moonlight. If you have children in your group, arm everyone with a glowstick or a flashlight and a little flag - now the walk to the beach is a parade, and everyone, from the grandparents to the babies in strollers to strangers who join on the way, is a part of it. You can even march to the Rotary Bark bandstand and enjoy the Congress Street Band, at 7:30, for pre-fireworks music. You have two chances to see fireworks. On

Friday, July 3, the Independence Day Festival begins at 5 p.m. on the North Cape May Bayfront between Lincoln Boulevard and Emerson Avenue. Fireworks begin at 9. Cape May City fireworks are scheduled to be launched from a barge near Congress Hall at 9 p.m. on July 4. Aim for Convention Hall if you enjoy being among the crowds, but you can also watch from as far away as Poverty Beach. Or, watch from a boat - the Cape May Whale Watcher offers a fireworks cruise each night, complete with hot dogs and pizza, departing at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 per adult and $25 per child. Call (609) 8845445 for reservations. Bring snacks for the kids, a beach chair, a jacket, a flashlight and your patience - nothing and nobody is moving quickly on Fourth of July. If the fog makes the display hard to see, or rain postpones the celebration, or an errant wave swamps the barge, fear not! Remember how unlikely it was that a group of farmers could create a nation in 1776. The fireworks are only a bonus. Next week: Treat Yourself to a Spa Day

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My wife has developed an obsessive dislike for one of my friends. For years the three of us were all quite close. It seems like my wife can’t get through a day without making frequent negative comments about him. We are able to amiably discuss anything and to disagree with humor and good cheer; but any discussion about my friend is nonproductive and becomes irrational. Otherwise, we share many other warm and wonderful friendships. I occasionally meet my friend for dinner, etc. My wife is always invited to join us but declines. Afterwards, I get the cold shoulder/silent treatment. It is not like some traumatic evil event or betrayal occurred. I am interested in your

Wise answers to perplexing questions

take on this issue. – Do Unto Others Dear Do Unto Others The Answer Lady suspects there is some underlying issue which is not being addressed. Perhaps your friend made a pass at her at some point or she interpreted it as such. Men like to joke that way, and women don’t always see it as a joke. Or maybe she is simply jealous of your friendship and the time you spend with him. The Answer Lady cannot say exactly what the problem is. Only your wife can answer that. You say you were

quite close for three years. So what changed? Have you ever asked your wife that question? Have you ever thought of asking your friend? I suggest you and your wife have lunch at Lucky Bones and talk about it over a dish of mussels and a glass of red wine. Dear Answer Lady I met a man on an online dating service and we agreed to meet. I’m a personal trainer and I sent him a text that I would meet him for a drink after my client’s session. He texted me back and said, “You mean you’re not taking a shower first?” I texted him back, “We don’t know each other well enough for you to pass judgment on my personal hygiene.” Was I wrong? - Sweatin’ Mad Dear Sweatin’ It sounds like your online man was looking for an unrealistic happy ending to a simple meet-and-greet cocktail. Unrealistic expectations so often spoil any chance for a future. Next time ditch the computer and go to the Beach Shack to hang out at the fire pit. Your odds of having a good time are much better.

JESSIE is an older fellow, but still full of energy. He’s a pug/beagle mix who loves to be where the action is happening. He loves people and would make a wonderful addition to the family.

«

SPOTTY, the Australian Cattle Dog mix, loves to play and go for long walks around the town. This fun-loving boy is looking for a forever home. He would make a great play mate with whom to explore the dunes of Higbees Beach or the streets of cool Cape May.

«

JETER is a spunky, six-month-old Jack Russell Terrier/Beagle mix. He is small in stature, but full of energy to play ball and run in the yard. Jeter lived happily with a family including children so he would adjust nicely to a family setting.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

hat happens when you let Fear, Anger, and Disgust rule your life? What happens when all your Joy or even the Sadness are lost? This may seem like questions you may hear at a psychology lecture or at a personal empowerment seminar, but it is actually the premise of a new animated feature from Disney Pixar film, Inside Out. And when Disney Pixar is answering this question, it comes down to two words: hilarious and moving. In a recent column, when I reviewed the new Mad Max movie, I said that I rarely describe a film as an allegory. This film nearly rises to that level. I had to see twice in two days, and I know I’ll have to see it once or twice more to really get it out of the system. The story begins with the birth of Riley (voiced by Kaitlyn Dias), the cutest little baby girl (after my daughters of course). We see inside that baby’s brain to find the personification of the emotion Joy (Amy Poehler). Joy is the only emotion

Personifications of emotions take center stage in Disney Pixar’s Inside Out. in the baby…for about 30 seconds. The baby starts crying, and Joy looks down at the control panel of the brain to find that Sadness (voiced by The Office’s Phyllis Smith) took the controls for a moment. And so our emotional journey begins. Joy and Sadness are soon joined by three other emotions—and the control panel gets bigger and more complicated. Saturday Night Live alum Bill Hader plays Fear, Mindy Kaling (also of The Office) plays Disgust, and in possibly one of the

best casting decisions of all time, Lewis Black plays Anger. Perfect. Memories are gathered in small glowing balls that are mostly sent to long term memory. A precious few memories are put into a core memory chamber--and some are sent to the dark abyss of forgotten memories. Joy and Sadness are accidently taken from the brain’s control center and thrown into the world of longterm memory. This is one of the best films I ever saw—don’t take my word for it? How about Jasmine, my girlfriend Dawn’s 6 year old granddaughter? We took her to see it, and she said it was the “bestest” film SHE ever saw (and that Disgust was her favorite character). I’m sure Jazzy (as she is affectionately nicknamed) did not see all the meaning behind the story. She just loved its pace and comedy. I was deeply moved by how this film captured what moves us all. So take a child you love to see this film, and see how fast you fall in love with it yourself.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

orry to tell you, but the seasons just shifted gear. You may think it’s summer. It may be hot enough for summer. But the natural world has already turned the page. This week the first of our summer breeding birds begin their migration south. This seasonal bellwether is Eastern Willet. Why so early? To beat the rush. Besides, there’s no reason to stay. The kids are raised. Retirement beckons. This week you may see “Vs” of calico patterned shorebirds flying south just off Cape May’s beaches. Their destination is South America. Our breeding Willets arrive in April with beaks wide open. For three months the air has vibrated with the “Pill-will-Willet,” incantation of these marsh loving shorebirds. One vocalizing Willet sets off a chorus as birds in adjacent territories add their voices to the din. Now your trespass will be greeted by silence. I know what some of you are thinking. You’ve seen Willets well into July, even seen

some foraging in the surf well into Autumn. You’re right. A few breeding Willets do linger into July. These are late breeders or this year’s young. As for birds seen much later in the season, these are Western Willets, a different subspecies with totally distinct breeding and wintering areas. Why all this ink dedicated to a bran-colored shorebird with a popsicle stick for a bill? Because it’s gone. You missed it. The natural world doesn’t offer rain checks. Time and the seasons move only one way. We take full

advantage of the days we have or we lose the sand in the glass and whatever grains of discovery passed us by. But don’t fret overmuch about missing Willet this summer. It’s departure marks the beginning of Fall Migration. In the next few weeks tens of thousands of other shorebird species will be migrating through Cape May, vacating Arctic breeding grounds, heading for species-specific wintering areas. The same Red Knot that packed into Delaware Bay last May return, now on their way south. In fall the knot forage on small bivalves that they pry from Atlantic beaches. Nature doesn’t dawdle and shorebirds keep tight schedules. Remember, the early bird gets the bivalve. By the way, have you made dinner reservations yet? Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30 a.m in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He also hosts an introduction to Birding Short Course Wednesdays 2-4 p.m. at the Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Space is limited. Pre-registration is advised. 609-884-2736.
