Talk Of The Town

RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS

Congrats! BOB Epaldo and Jim Schultz — aka JimBob — have once again reached 50,000 Lucky Loyalty Points for being such dedicated Lucky Bones customers. It’s a feat that took approximately two-and-a-half years and one they are “very excited” about, according to Head Lucky Boner David Craig. And they should be... the reward is a fabulous wine-focused trip to the west coast, the details of which are still being hammered out. It’s the second time JimBob have taken home the 50,000-point prize... and they’re the only ones to do so at this point. Other customers are in the 30,000 range, according to Dave, so keep going strong, guys!

Help! We had a great time at last Tuesday’s Feasting On History fundraiser for Historic Cold Spring Village at the Cape May County Airport. See next week’s issue for more photos!

A Family Paradise

CAPE May is a little like that annoying kid in high school who received all the awards — dean’s list, MVP, perfect attendance, you name it. Our National Historic Landmark city and its assets have been honored time and again. Remember our placement on Budget Travel’s “10 Coolest Small Towns in America” list in 2012? Or how about TripAdvisor naming Sunset Beach the 24th best sandy stretch in the nation? The Albert Stevens Inn on Myrtle Avenue? It’s 18th in the world’s B&b rankings, also according to TripAdvisor. And the Mission Inn on New Jersey Avenue? Number 25 in the country. You might think another award would be ho-hum at this point, but the most recent honor bestowed upon our charmed

city — a number five designation among the Top 10 Best Beach Towns in the country, according to a recent Parents magazine article — has us buzzing. Never mind that Parents has a readership over two million strong and a Facebook page with nearly one million likes — it’s the methodology behind their Top 10 piece that caught our attention. “I use the TripAdvisor service, myself,” article author and Parents Contributing Editor Karen Cicero told us. “And of course we value people’s anecdotal experiences, but our surveys are not typically comprised of only that.” Instead, Karen, who says the piece had a year-long gestation period, started out by removing all towns with poor water quality from the running, using information provided by the National Resources Defense Council. “I was

surprised,” she said. “We began with hundreds, and eliminated about 50 percent right there.” After that, Karen knocked out all beach spots with no lifeguarding services (at least another third). “Parents are watching their own kids on the beach,” Karen said, “but rip currents can happen any time, and having a trained professional is important.” At this point, Cape May was still in the running, so Karen called the city to see about one not-so-minor detail — whether or not we suffered great devastation, like so many of our unfortunate neighbors to the north, at the hands of Hurricane Sandy. “It made me very happy to hear that Cape May had been spared,” said Karen, who is herself a Cape May vacation vet. “I have a

ONE of our favorite bartenders, Rusty Nail drink-slinger Katie Repici, is looking for an apartment on the island or closeby... or someone who needs a roommate. We can vouch that Katie would make a super tenant (she’s barely home, since she spends so much time surfing), so if you have a lead for her, give us a call at 609-770-8479, and we’ll pass along the message.

Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Bert Pearson of North Cape May, NJ. How long have you been coming to Cape May? Eighteen years! What do you like about it? It’s the best beach town in Jersey! What’s not to like? What’s your favorite place? The beaches are the best. I also really like the fishing, and pretty much all of the restaurants. Least favorite thing about Cape May? The parking. What is your favorite restaurant? This is a tough one... They know me at some of these restaurants. But I’m gonna have to say Pier House. And your favorite store? Sea Gear. What do you like about Exit Zero? It keeps me informed about what’s going on in town. And I love the personal touches, like the pictures of people on the beach and at different events. I’ve been in the magazine several times myself. What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I’m not here during the week to get it, so I have to wait to read it. What’s your T-shirt size? 2XL. Want to join our army of subscribers — there are hundreds of them in nearly 30 states! Call us on 609-770-8479 or buy one online at ezstore.us. It’s $50 for all 47 BW issues PLUS our six color issues.

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above. If you think you know this place, you could win a gift certificate for a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 10-year-old daughter, Katie, who we brought to Cape May about two years ago,” she told us. “I live in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and my family has vacationed often in Wildwood, but I always wanted to try Cape May, and I was charmed by it, from beginning to end. We loved the old-fashioned carnival nights offered by Congress Hall, and the welcoming vibe of the city. My daughter still asks to go back.” (Check out a blog post on Karen’s Cape May experience by visiting parents.com/blogs/goodyblog/2013/05/33709/.) Karen was especially impressed with the Nature Center on Delaware Avenue. “It was Katie’s favorite memory,” she told us. “She participated in a program that allows kids to cast their net into the ocean, and discover the little critters that come into it. The experience stuck with her. And I remember thinking how affordable it was.” It is inland activities like this

that were also taken into account when researching the Parents article. “We have done similar types of stories in the past, where we rank each resort or beach by itself,” Karen said. “This is the first time we looked at entire towns, and it’s important because families want to experience not just a resort or beach, but all a place has to offer.” Other factors included price, overall vibe (“Are you going to feel comfortable there with your child,” Karen said, “or is it going to be full of college kids on spring break?”), and anecdotal experience. “We wanted the perspectives of people who actually live and vacation there,” she told us. “We wanted an insider’s view, rather than that of a travel and tourism board member. It is real parents who helped us decide what to feature.” And it’s real parents we spoke with this week, when we asked for advice on how to make a vacation with your kids just a wee bit easier. Because even on the fifth most family-friendly beach in the country, the under-four-foot set can add a fair amount of stress

to a relaxing stint on the sand. In fact, one of our readers sent us a message that read: “There are no hints. Ike put 200,000 troops on the beach at Normandy with less hassle than putting three kids on the beach in Jersey.” But for those of you who are feeling less, ahem, melodramatic, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite reader-submitted tips, beginning with one from Karen herself. Karen Cicero: “I buy regular sunscreen, but for touch-ups, I rely on the Supergood brand of sunblock wipes, which can be purchased online. That, and figure out where the restrooms are!” Ben Miller: “Pack snacks like granola bars and fruit that will give the kids nutrients and energy, but not upset their stomachs if they run around afterwards. Plus, if you opt for a hot dog from one of the vendors for lunch, your kids are still getting something healthy to go along with it, instead of chips.” Catherine Pagliuca: Draw a big circle in the soft sand and tell your

kids to play ‘the running around game’ inside it. This worked with mine until they were six! They get tired out, and you get to sit still while they play. Also, limit the souvenirs, but market it right, by saying something like, ‘Today, everyone gets to bring home THREE seashells!’ Otherwise, you end up with a big bucket of smelly dead stuff in the trunk. And make peace with the sand; vacuum the car in the fall.” Danielle Coraddinno: Rent a box on the beach for all of your gear. (Reporter’s note: Stegers Beach Service offers box rentals — they hold up to five chairs! — for individual days, or an entire season. Reserve online at stegerbeachservice.com). Melanie Thiel: When kids get cranky in the afternoon, take them back to air conditioning and a bed/ or crib and let them nap! You can still enjoy yourself with an adult beverage on the porch and a copy of Exit Zero until they wake up.

Oh No, Mosquito!

THEY are widely considered among the most dangerous creatures on the planet. We’re not talking about saber-tooth tigers or great white sharks or any other creature with a two-ton bite capable of gnashing human bone. We’re talking about a bug. A bug that can kill you or, at least, kill your plans for an evening barbeque. It’s true — mosquitoes have been putting a damper on this otherwise idyllic place for the last 170 million years, so we called the affable Superintendent of the Cape May County Department of Mosquito Control, Peter Bosak, PhD, to find out what, exactly, he’s doing to salvage our summer. The answer? Quite a bit… and not what you might think. “When I tell them what I do, children of the 50s, 60s, even part of the 70s picture a truck going

down the street with a giant plume of white smoke coming from the back,” Peter told us. “That’s the image that’s ingrained in the baby boomer psyche. But mosquito control has evolved.” Forget pesticides; that’s the last resort. Instead, the commission relies on a multi-faceted approach, the first step of which is water control. “There are 45 different species of mosquitoes in this county,” Peter said. “And there is only one thing that applies to every one of them — they all start out in the water.” So, with a lot of equipment and a great deal of liaising with wildlife conservation agencies, Pete oversees the elimination of standing water, often through the use of ditches which redirect it towards a larger body and, at the same time, allow mosquito larvae-eating fish greater access to their prey. Then comes the use of bacterial larvacides and, on the bottom of the hierarchy, chemical control. But no matter how success-

ful these initiatives are, the fact remains that our county is “essentially one big marsh,” and mosquitoes are a fact of life. As for how big a fact? Your guess is as good as ours. “It’s a fair question,” Pete said, “But predicting how heavy the mosquitoes will be in a given season would be like predicting the weather for the month of July. There are many variables. The insects are an immediate function of what goes on in the environment, so their numbers are determined less by long-term climate changes.” However, there is one annoying set — the salt marsh mosquitoes — that you can bank on more at certain times than others. “They revolve around the lunar tide cycle, which we generally have twice a month,” Peter said. “These are slightly stronger and higher, and they flood areas that wouldn’t flood normally. So, if you’re planning a big event and you have the

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 ability to change its date, it is possible to hedge your bets by not holding it a week to two weeks after the lunar cycle.” And if that’s not an option, Peter doesn’t see anything wrong with DEET, a common ingredient in most over-the-counter insect repellents that’s been around for 40 years. “Anti-pesticide people will tell you the opposite, but I’m a big believer in looking at the science, and nobody’s grown two heads from using DEET,” Pete said. “But Skin So Soft is another story. It’s not a proven repellent. Many people just put so much on, they become an oily mess, and the bugs stick to them.” Other myth-busters? Bats and barn swallows are not all that adept at catching the insects. Even dragonflies, which rely heavily on mosquitoes as a food source, make a negligible dent in the population. “And that would be the case even if dragonfly numbers

were doubled,” Peter said. Or, how about this: not ALL mosquitoes are blood-sucking spawn of the devil. In fact, some don’t bite humans at all. And within the groups that do, it’s only the females who get under your skin. (Insert misogynist jokes here). Taking your blood is not how they feed — they rely on nectar for that, same as the butterfly — but how many of them obtain protein necessary for egg production, which is accomplished by first inserting saliva into a host to prevent blood-clotting. Think about that the next time an itchy red bump appears while you’re mowing the lawn. And no, you’re not imagining it, some of us are way more vulnerable to attacks than others. “Just like we all have different personalities,” Peter said, “we all exude different concentrations of chemicals which emanate from our pores, and mosquitoes are more attracted to some combinations than others.” So, if you’re one of those

Uncle Bill’s & FAMILY RESTAURANT

unlucky folks whose chemical combo is appealing, how worried should you be? After all, these are the creatures that transmit malaria (essentially eradicated from the US now, but still the greatest killer on the planet), yellow and dengue fever, even a parasitic disease called filariasis which leads to elephantiasis and blindness. Not to mention West Nile virus, which a Cape May County resident contracted just last year, and eastern equine encephalitis, which is even more dangerous, according to Peter. “I wouldn’t let it determine your outdoor activities,” Peter said. “Unless there comes a press release from our department saying you should.” Turns out, the Cape May County Mosquito Commission is the only in the state which tests their own mosquitoes in-house, grinding them up in a state-ofthe-art lab until they’re nothing but a buggy paste which researchers can analyze. All together now: Ewwww.

So rest easy, Cape Mayans. You’ve got a capable team making sure our little island is safe from these bastard bugs. And try not to let them drive you too crazy. “Like every living thing,” Peter said, “they are part of the food web.”

The Great Race(s)

HOW about running on an airport runway, jumping off the Cape May-Lewes Ferry and swimming to shore or running in a two or five mile competition in a borough that looks like a picture postcard? You can’t do all three things in one race — they are separate events — but all are coming up in a few weeks. When you were a kid, you probably made motor sounds and ran down the sidewalk with your arms extended pretending to be an airplane. On June 8, you can do that on a runway of the county airport in Naval Air Station Wildwood museum’s Runway 5k and

The event begins at the airport at 9am, and proceeds benefit restoration of Hangar #1 which is listed on the both the national and state registers of historic places. The run will be held rain or shine. “When was the last time you could run on a runway?” asked Dr. Joseph Salvatore, Museum Director. The airport will shut down from 8-11am so runners, walkers and airplanes are not competing for runway space. Participants 18 and older who register before June 1 will be entered into a drawing for a free flight on the B-17 Yankee Lady, a World War II bomber which will visit the museum June 10- 12. Early registration is encouraged (and available online at usnasw.org.) Day-of registration will begin at 7am at the aviation museum. The fee is $25. Admission to the museum will be free until noon on race day.

Thursday, May 16, 2013 What promises to be an intense event June 2 starts with participants jumping off the Cape May-Lewes Ferry and swimming to the beach in front of the ferry terminal in North Cape May as part of the inaugural Escape the Cape Triathlon. The race takes place entirely in Lower Township due to the assistance of Recreation Director Mitch Plenn. Event founder Stephen Del Monte said the only other triathlon that involves jumping off a boat is San Francisco’s Escape from Alcatraz, that includes a 1.5mile swim from a ferry adjacent to the former prison known as The Rock. To escape the cape, participants will dive 10 feet off the car deck of the ferry more than one mile from shore, all this with the blessing of the Delaware River and Bay Authority. “We’ll have tons of water safety personnel that will be in position to guide the swimmers along and make sure are able to handle anything that may arise,”

said Del Monte. The second leg of the triathlon is biking from the ferry terminal to Jonathan Hoffman Boulevard over the Seashore Road Bridge to New England Road and returning to North Cape May. The third leg, a run, begins at the beach near the ferry terminal moving onto Beach Drive to Town Bank and Cape May Beach and returning to the terminal. The triathlon promises to be a local economic stimulus with 1,000 participants registered for the event and hailing from as far away as Arizona and Colorado. “This is going to have an economic impact of a minimum of $500,000 to the community,” said Del Monte, who staged his first triathlon in North Wildwood in 2004. “When you race, you generally effect yourself, but when you produce, you have the chance to effect thousands of lives,” he said. “It’s a very positive atmosphere with the right people there; they are trying to achieve a goal.”

Online registration is available at escapethecape.com On June 15, the Cape May Point Volunteer Fire Department will hold a five-mile run to benefit the department. The event began in 1979 and is one of the oldest continually held footraces in South Jersey. The race has a history of hundreds of runners and spectators participating. Billed as the largest annual event in Cape May Point, it boasts both a two-mile and fivemile run over a course described as “fast and flat.” It passes Lake Lily, Cape May Point State Park and the Cape May Lighthouse. The two-mile run begins at 8:30am with the five mile run following at 9am. Participants can register at the fire house on Yale Avenue on the day of for $25, beginning at 7:30am. Early registration can be by mail (send $20 Cape May Point Five Mile Run, PO Box 84, Cape May Point, NJ 08212) or in person June 14 from 6:30 to 8:30pm. Ready For A Water Adventure?

I

The spring Cape May Forum is happening this weekend. Come see experts from National Geographic Live!

N 2012, the power and fury of water propelled by Hurricane Sandy made everyone aware of the impact of rising sea levels. Cape May is surrounded by water, and water’s tourism and fishing industries furnish much of its livelihood. Political, economic, environmental and health concerns about water fill the news. “Water Matters” is a timely topic. Cape May Forum brings National Geographic Live! to town for entertaining and visually spectacular presentations by three dynamic explorers, writers, and photographers – speakers who have inspired and enlightened audiences worldwide. Join the adventure... the Spring Forum convenes at Cape May’s Convention Hall this Saturday, May 18 from 9am to 1pm. Tickets are $50, available at the Convention Hall box office, and online at both Convention Hall and CapeMayForum.org. The blueness of our planet comes from the water that covers nearly 70 percent of Earth’s surface. Yet, the fresh water we need to survive is less than one percent of the

water found on the Earth. Dennis Dimick, National Geographic’s Executive Editor for the Environment takes you on a highly visual journey across our “blue” planet to give you surprising insights: why water matters, where to find it, how we use it, who has it and

who doesn’t. In “Water: Our Thirsty World” Dimick will tell us why water stewardship and conservation are central to our relationship with water. After all, the water we have on earth now is all we will ever have. Nature

Cape May Forum ? From Page 23 isn’t making any more! Dr. John Francis, National Geographic explorer, tells how he stopped using motor vehicles after witnessing an oil spill in San Francisco Bay, and about his radical 17-year vow of silence. He walked from San Francisco to Cape May, where he now resides, accompanied by his ever-present banjo and a gentle but determined demeanor. Francis communicates a surprisingly pragmatic story of pilgrimage, environment and social change in “Walking As If Water Matters.” Don Belt traveled to 65 countries over the past three decades for National Geographic, as senior writer, covering international politics, the environment and much more. Are water wars, so rare in human history, an inevitable thing of the future? Sharing insights and anecdotes from recent field assignments, Belt will cover “Water Wars: A Geographic Perspective,” explaining how people in three hotly contested watersheds navigate between water conflict and water cooperation. Terry O’Brien’s weekly column... it’s about nothing and everything, all at the same time

ORRECTION of the Week: My lovely wife Cathrine INSISTS she thanked me for the spa treatments at Accent on Beauty in an email (which I still have, in which she does not thank me, but she’s my wife and she INSISTS so there we are…) so you’re welcome, honey. I knew that thanks was implicit, I mostly just put it in there because her nostrils flare very cutely when she’s mad. Hey, I think that was a rejected lyric from The Eagles’ “Peaceful Easy Feeling.” I like the way your angry nostrils flare… beneath your eyes so brown…” Given my recent diatribes, I’m a little afraid to go pick up my son Jackson from dance class at Cape May Fitness Center. I could probably hold my own in a dance fight (I was in West Side Story. Twice!), but either way I’d probably end up in a trash can crumpled up like a wad of paper. No offense, guys. (And thank you to the few of you who have voiced support of my cause… lapel pins and bumper stickers soon to follow…) It is my sad duty to announce the demise of Open Mic Thursdays with Terry

& Bill at Rio Station. We gave it a good run but the support just wasn’t there to keep it going through the summer. On the bright side, we took what was supposed to be a monthly show and turned it into a weekly gig for the better part of three months, and we’re talking about bringing it back in the fall. And you can still come perform at Terry O’ke every Friday at the Rio, which is in its eighth season. It’s just like open mic night but instead of singing along with a live guitar player and drummer you’re doing it to a digital track being sent from my laptop hard drive. It’s practically the same thing! This, coupled with the end of my tenure at Westy’s Irish Pub, means I am done per-

forming with Bill Caterini for the season. Our coming together was a little unorthodox (I had a gig and the first guitar player to answer the phone got the job, which was Bill), but over the last six months we developed a nice chemistry and put on a good show. I look forward to future gigs with Bill and our percussionist, Geoff Moran, the tallest working man in showbusiness. I’ve got nothing on Mary Sexton this week. Doesn’t mean she won’t punch me in the shoulder next time she sees me… As a nerdy Silver Age Marvel Comics purist, I was mildly annoyed at the liberties that Iron Man 3 took with the Mandarin character, but overall I enjoyed the hell out of it both times I saw it. Robert Downey, Jr. and director Shane Black infuse the film with unpredictable zing. Hard to see where they go with the character from here, but Marvel has done such a great job building their cinematic universe I trust them completely. For a decidedly more adult paring of RDJ and Shane Black, check out the criminally under-seen gem Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

You’ll thank me later. Next up? Star Trek Into Darkness. Pop quiz: How in the world can we put one man (J.J. Abrams) in charge of both the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises? The philosophical paradoxes are mind-boggling… Meanwhile, at my “real” job, manager of Morey’s Piers’ Ghost Ship haunted attraction, we’ve been open for a couple of weeks and things are going well. We are way ahead of schedule on the number of lost flip-flops we’ve collected and the number of new shorts we’ve necessitated. Local guys Mikey Alimo (aka Mikey Vengeance) and Angelo Rotondi (aka DJ UHF) are my make-up team leaders for this year and their work has been putrid. Which is the highest praise you can give to a zombie make-up artist. Mikey will also be serving as lead photographer for The Wild Times. You can check out his work on Facebook under Mikey Vengeance Photography. I like the Vengeance moniker. It makes me feel like I’m getting a qualified, professional photographer, but also that there’s a slight chance he might kill me. As the World Turns (Exit Zero Edition): Somehow a simple photo booth (you know, the kind where you put in a few bucks then make four funny faces) led to a dust-up between EZ editor Jack Wright and his right-hand woman Diane Stopyra. Guttural, unintelligible Scottish words were mumbled, computer mice were thrown, dramatic exits were performed… it was great theater. Makes me wonder how in the hell they produce this awesome magazine every week, but still… great theater. Add in some dramatic lighting and a show tune or two and Exit Zero: The Musical will be sweeping the Tony Awards before you know it. Jason Black and I will be the old men in the balcony heckling everyone. I miss the Love Me Dudes… Righteous Indignation of the Week: I am a smoker. It’s not something I’m happy about or

proud of, but there it is. I am as filthy and degenerate a smoker as they come. A drive of more than five minutes is a race to see if I can finish two smokes before I get there. It’s the first thing I think of when I wake up and the last thing I think about before I go to sleep. That said, it would be super-great if the rest of you smokers out there could, like me, find a way to get through a two-hour Little League game in the presence of dozens on impressionable kids without lighting up every five minutes behind the dugout or in the stands. Coaches included. It’s two hours. Find a way. Just think how good that first one will feel after abstaining for 120 or so excruciating minutes. In completely normal mental health news, I’ve developed an anorexic-like aversion to food these last couple of months, eating, on average, about once every 24-36 hours. Fortunately I had a 43-year head start on it and probably won’t feel any real impact until 2023 or so. Probably has nothing to do with my mom being sick, living on the perpetual brink of insolvency and trying to launch a new magazine a year ahead of schedule. Nothing at all… (Yeah, yeah… I know… but everyone’s allowed to have a little pity party for themselves every once in a while.) Which reminds me, by the time you read this my new magazine, The Wild Times, will be just one week from publication! We still have ad space available so if you’re a business owner with properties in both Cape May and Wildwood we’re offering up a nice discount. Hit me up at terry@exitzero.us for details. I am that strange combination of excited and terrified (and hungry) that I felt watching my bride-to-be stroll down the beach towards me; waiting for the imminent arrival of my first child; and thinking about the upcoming Ender’s Game movie. Big, big life moments. Pre-Apology of Next Week: I am not terrified of my wife. Usually. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Inside City Hall

DILIGENTLY REPORTING THE GOINGS-ON AT CAPE MAY CITY COUNCIL... BY JACK FICHTER

Victorian Towers has 45 apartments vacant, and residents have complained about poor service

Deal At The Towers

THERE are some things that even god can’t control — or at least the Diocese of Camden. Take for example the Diocesan’s Housing Services Corporation’s request to pay lower taxes on the beleaguered Victorian Towers senior housing block. In return for the decrease in revenue to the city, the Diocese promised to remodel units in the complex. Curtis Johnson, housing services director for the diocese, made his way down the Parkway May 7 to pitch his plea to city council during their monthly session. What he learned is that while the lord may giveth, the city has the option of taking away. Johnson asked council to cut the payments the diocese currently makes, in lieu of property taxes. In an agreement set up years ago, to entice the diocese to bring lower income senior housing to augment the expensive housing in the city, the city allowed the diocese to pay 15 percent of its gross annual rents, minus its utility costs in lieu of regular taxes. Now the diocese is coming back to council with its hat in hand hoping to get that amount lowered to 10 percent by promising

to renovate units throughout the 40-year-old building. While most people clamor for affordable housing in Cape May, seniors are not exactly flocking here. The vacancy rate for apartments in the building has soared, with residents complaining of mildew and poor ventilation, as well as the diocese’s lack of response to resident requests for repairs. Johnson told council that funding for the project will come from monies made available in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The diocese is eyeing an $8 million community development block grant. “It’s our goal today to start the process of pursuing this funding to make those badly needed upgrades and improvements so that not only the Victorian Towers is more sustainable and prepared for the next 40 years in terms of marketability but also more prepared for future super storms that are likely to hit our area,” warned Johnson. He said the goal is to convert empty, outdated studio apartments into one-bedroom units which would reduce the number of apartments in Victorian Towers from 205 to 181. Fewer apartments mean less cars,

thereby reducing parking problems faced by residents of the towers. In addition the project would replace the building’s roof, upgrade the plumbing system, add Energy Star appliances and replace the heating and air conditioning system in the building’s corridors. The apartments would continue to have window air conditioners. Johnson brought along James Wyatt, a principal of Domus Construction, to the meeting to explain to council the proposed changes. He said the building’s façade would be improved, new windows would be installed, the electrical system and sprinkler/ fire alarm upgraded to current codes and the main entrance and lobbies refurbished. He said vacant efficiency units would be renovated first of all, with residents moving into the newly refurbished apartments. Residents would remain in the building during renovation, and a stipulation of the grant is the work must complete within two years, so renovations would begin as soon as the money is awarded. City Manager Bruce MacLeod said an audit report ending June 2012 showed net rental income was just over $1 million at Victorian Towers, of which the city received $156,393. He said if the city reduced the rate to 10 percent, it would get $146,000. Councilman Jack Wichterman questioned why the city should change the formula and take a loss of revenue. He suggested council consider lowering the diocese’s payment from 15 percent to 11 percent considering the renovation would reduce the high number of vacancies in the building. Mayor Ed Mahaney said approximately 45 apartments in Victorian Towers were vacant and without renovations — that number could increase, further reducing money the city received from diocese. Council approved a motion to further study the issue and held a special meeting May 13. At that meeting, council agreed to reduce the payment from the towers to 10 percent of the gross rents but also include in the formula any other fees paid by tenants for amenities such as parking and laundry fees. City Solicitor Tony Monzo said by including those fees, total revenue to the city would equal or exceed what is currently being collected from Victorian Towers on an annual basis.

IT’S as ugly as a rusty 1986 Yugo abandoned on the side of the road. While many residents enjoyed a beer and a game of pool at Vance’s Bar, the longclosed watering hole has been greeting drivers entering Cape May with the panache of a toothless maître d’ at a five-star restaurant. Mayor Ed Mahaney calledl the site “a major eyesore.” City council approved purchase of the site, on Lafayette Street, for $1.9 million from Republic First Bank as part of a plan to create a recreation area on the site of a former coalgasification plant that left widespread pollution underground. The purchase was funded by $1.5 million in grants from the state Green Acres and Blue Acres programs. Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) will conduct additional remediation on the site, which will include underground barriers to control groundwater that contains chemicals such a coal tars, benzene and naphthalene. Resident Charles Hendricks wondered if the bank would hold the city harmless from the possibility of future lawsuits due to toxins on the property. City Solicitor Tony Monzo said Republic First Bank acquired the Vance’s Bar property as part of a foreclosure and sheriff’s sale. He the city had a “broad, unlimited indemnification and hold harmless commitment from JCP&L,” which means the city has no responsibility for the clean up or any future problems involving what lurks underground. Monzo said remediation on the site was completed to the satisfaction of the state Department of Environmental Protection. He said there was two feet of clean fill dirt everywhere on the site accept under the bar building. JCP&L is obligated to

undertake any additional clean up under the building after it is demolished. Monzo said JCP&L has not completed remediation of Wise Anderson Park and the former coal gasification plant. Underground containment walls will be installed in two to three years by JCP&L, he said. The city is also considering purchasing environmental insurance.

Poor Welcome

THERE will be fewer smiling faces greeting visitors in the city’s Welcome Center. Hours and staff are being cut because the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May can no longer fund the operation on its own. Chamber President John Cooke told council the chamber staff would be reduced from two to one and hours of operation limited from 10am to 2pm, Monday through Saturday. He said it had been assumed that revenue from the Welcome Center along with an annual $25,000 contribution from the city would cover the $40,000 in annual expenses. The promise of $25,000 per year came from former City Manager Lou Corea but it never was put into place, said Cooke. In 2012, chamber staff greeted 14,561 bus passengers and 56,344 walk-in visitors, said Cooke. City Manager Bruce MacLeod said it was not permissible under state law for the city to give the chamber of commerce a cash contribution and added that there were other entities in the city struggling at this time. The matter will be reviewed by council, he said. Cooke told Exit Zero the chamber has been trying to get an answer from the city on funding the Welcome Center since January. Tour buses pay the city from $40 to $60 each time they arrive in the city. “We estimated it based on last year’s bus volume that the revenue would be about $25,000,” said Cooke.

The Old Fogey

D

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

EAR friends, how do we break it to our summer visitors that we are changing our beach sand? They will be coming in the hundreds of thousands, arriving by jet-powered airplane, helium-filled dirigible, gasoline-powered charabancs and steam locomotive (and some more modern, less classy means of transport that I shudder to mention, as they are just too crass for words) expecting to stand in their pampered/calloused/smooth/ crusted feet on the golden sands and contemplate the many ways in which they can get into trouble in the treacherous waters of the Atlantic, needing saving by our burly/ svelte life-saving lads and lasses. How can we explain that the Cape May beaches, after Sandy, failed a Quality Test and was deemed to be “sub-standard”? And that we had to search far and wide for a million tons of replacement sand in time for Memorial Day? Well, I hear you say, we should not trouble ourselves to tell them: only a handful of Sand Connoisseurs can feel a difference from the sensation of the bot-

tom of their sensitive feet, and their annual conference does not come to Congress Hall until August 30. But no, sadly, when we sourced the best replacement sand, we specified grain, evenness, quality, crunchiness and that gentle hissing sound it makes when you let a handful slip through your fingers and wonder where your life went. What we did not do was check with the winning bidder (New Zealand) what the color of the sand was: a harried assistant, typing out the bid limits, left out the fax page that detailed in 500

words the exact color of our sand needs (23 percent yellow, two percent canary, four percent rising sun, one percent lemon and so on) and so when we eagerly opened the first container from the town of Muriwai, we were aghast to realize it is in fact black. Not blackish yellow, not yellowish black, but black. Black as midnight, black as Young Albert’s soul as he stalks Shoebies on moonless nights with disembowelment in mind. Black as my rage when I found that flunkey and visited my wrath on him. All we can do is to boldly say that THE beach look this year is black, and that color is in fact the new yellow. There are, of course, ramifications: I have revised my season’s Speedo selection to concentrate on fluorescent colors that will stand out when I am lying on the beach sunbathing, and am aiming for a tan shade that is a little lighter than my usual “George Hamilton”, and more a “polished oak” in hue. I trust you will also play your part, dear friends, and I will hear no moaning, lest you wish a bruised eye the same shade as the sand. You have been advised.

Here’s To Your Health

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

T

HIS article may cause a sense of unease and queeziness; kinda like when Roy Halladay takes the mound. Gastro-intestinal issues do just that; there is a yuk factor and a “time–and—place” rule that has us speak in hushed tones about something that is universal AND necessary. Imagine our caveman ancestors cowering inside a little secluded area while “doing their business”(see? I can’t even write it), scratching their initials in the rock and contemplating future kills. More likely they crouched for 10 seconds and were off and running. We have whole libraries arrayed in our bathrooms. Some people have TVs. If you are spending that much time where you need an entertainment system to keep you occupied then something is amiss... Dog owners are fascinated with their pets’ bowel movements. They watch expectantly for immanent action, coxing them along, And then they praise, praise, praise them. Then they inspect for healthiness, or something, bag it up (hopefully) and proudly amble away. Drug stores have isles dedicated to relieving symptoms of intestinal distress. The idea

promulgated in commercials is that you can, and should, eat to your heart’s content even to the peril of your stomach. Too many corn dogs? Here’s a pill. Constipated? Mix this in water and keep eating! These products exist because we are unwilling to “just say no” to processed foods and big gulps. According to the British Medical Journal, “Lower GI disorders are now being portrayed in pharmaceutical company advertising as a disease requiring drug treatment. What for many people is a mild functional disorder is currently being framed as a serious disease attracting a label and a drug, with all of the associated harms and costs.”

Dr. Gerard Mullin, author of The Inside Tract (clever), recommends systematically eliminating possible allergens such as corn and soy (often genetically modified), dairy (your milk mustache is crawling with growth hormones) and wheat (have you noticed how common wheat sensitivities are now?). “People aren’t born with this. Something triggers it and with this dramatic rise in all ages, it must be something pervasive in the environment.” says Joseph a Murray, a gastroenterologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Mullin also uses peppermint oil and probiotics, like acidophilus, to re-establish a healthy colony of various flora in the gut. Aloe Vera juice is effective at quelling heart burn as good as any pill and comes with no side effects. After a night of bellying up to the Mad Batter bar with bar-tress Marta pouring us too many delicious maragritas, a fire in the esophagus sometimes erupts and Aloe has never failed me. There are far more serious conditions that require strong meds and a strict diet. But whatever your condition, it’s smart to not treat your body like a toilet.

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady, When did it become okay to wear pajamas in public? Did I miss a memo in the past few years or something? – Curious Dear Curious, It is not acceptable, in the Answer Lady’s humble opinion, to wear pajamas in public. If a memo was indeed circulated, she missed it, too. It never was acceptable, is not now acceptable, and only after the Answer Lady is dead and buried will it be acceptable. And even then, she will likely still have an issue with it. Naturally, one is granted dispensation in an emergency; if one’s trash cans are caught in a breeze and are rolling down the street (which happened to the Answer Lady last fall and she is STILL mortified that she dashed out of her house in her purple flannel pajamas with the cupcakes all over them); or if a

bear walks in the front door of one’s home and one must escape out the back with no time to slip into something more civilized. Another part of the problem is that people are not even appearing in public in decent-looking pajamas. Even the indecent Hugh Hefner has the decency to wear silk pajamas and robe, which are at least tasteful, as well as amply covering his general… ickiness. So if a memo can be distributed, it is the Answer Lady’s fervent hope that it trickles down to the grown-up people

FEATURING EXPLORERS

SATURDAY, MAY 18th • 9am - 1pm Cape May Forum brings National Geographic Live! to town for entertaining and visually spectacular presentations by three dynamic explorers, writers, and photographers – speakers who have inspired and enlightened audiences worldwide. Join the adventure! DENNIS DIMICK, National Geographic’s Executive Editor for the Environment, takes you on a highly visual journey across our “blue” planet to give you surprising insights: why water matters, where to find it, how we use it, who has it and who doesn’t.

JOHN FRANCIS - This National Geographic explorer tells how he stopped using motor vehicles after witnessing an oil spill in San Francisco Bay, and about a radical 17-year vow of silence. He walked from San Francisco to Cape May, where he now resides, accompanied by his banjo and a gentle but determined demeanor.

DON BELT traveled to 65 countries over the past three decades as senior writer for National Geographic, covering water controversies, the environment and much more. He’ll share insights and anecdotes from recent field assignments.

The Movie Column

T

This week, Cape May Film Society member Maria Knapp reviews “Iron Man 3”

RILOGIES are always tricky. Rarely is the third movie as good as the first. Look at Return of the Jedi. It went from the thrilling dark second act of the Empire Strikes Back to Ewoks. Okay, for the sake of argument, Revenge of the Sith was better that The Phantom Menace, but that was cheating. Menace had Jar Jar Binks. Cutting his screen time guaranteed a better film. That’s like standing on a scale with shoes on and pockets full in the morning and then weighing yourself at night in shorts after getting a haircut. You did NOT lose 2 pounds that day. But I digress. I think Iron Man 3 is now my favorite of all the Iron Man movies. In this film, Tony Stark (Iron Man’s civilian identity) is still trying to rally himself from the Avengers. In a world with gods and superheroes, what is he? Just a man in an iron suit? But the world is never safe, and a vicious warlord from the Middle East has arisen to strike terror in America. His name: The Mandarin.

Ben Kingsley made the movie with his role as the main villian — “The Mandarin”. Tony’s beloved bodyguard, played winningly by Jon Favreau, is injured, and Tony publically challenges the villain. The Mandarin responds by destroying Tony’s home and workshop. So Tony sets out on his own (without the iron suit) to figure out what is happening and stop it. Don’t worry. There are plenty of battles, but there is also Tony’s battle with himself. Robert Downey, Jr., is so much fun to watch. I hope he enjoys playing the role of

Tony Stark as much as I enjoy watching him. The cocky billionaire playboy genius is all there, but in this film there are wonderful moments of self doubt that are quickly covered up. With Happy (his sidekick) in a hospital, Tony finds a new sidekick, Harley (Ty Simpkins), a kid perfectly willing to mouth off to Tony. Guy Pearce and Gwyneth Paltrow are excellent, but the prize in this movie (beside Downey) is Ben Kingsley. His Mandarin is hands down the best villain ever. I do have to add that I did not see this in 3-D or IMAX. I actually prefer my movies in 2-D. I don’t care about the fighting and falling in the third dimension, but admittedly the scene when Tony examines a crime scene digitally may be pretty cool in 3-D. Last word of advice... If you want the full experience of the movie, you may want to “suit up” by watching the other films in this series a couple days before hitting the theater. And in this order: Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and The Avengers.

Activity Of The Week

E

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Where The Art Is

VER feel like the only culture you get is from your yogurt? Why not add some art to your Cape May vacation? Art is hard to define. Is it confined to painting, music and theater? Does it include fashion, gardening, and cooking? Must art be intentional? Must it be pretty? Let the scholars debate... the rest of us can simply enjoy it. Long ago, artists relied on patrons. With a royal commission, or a noble benefactor, an artist could afford to create great work, secure in the knowledge that a grand space was waiting to display it. During the Victorian era, art became more democratic. Artists and dealers hosted their own exhibitions, charging admission. The Royal Academy of Arts drew a broad audience to its summer exhibitions, and public museums were open to all. Artists started to rely less on patronage, and their works were as likely to decorate business offices and modest homes as palaces and cathedrals. Cape May’s art scene is similarly democratic.

The SOMA NewArt Gallery is just one of the many places to experience art in Cape May. You can find art during festivals and street fairs, at events like MAC’s Crafts and Antiques shows, or at restaurants like the Mad Batter, where pieces by Patty Nevil, Linda Pendrak, Elizabeth Bogtstra-Mikol and Peg Ditmar are currently on display. Visit the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery at the West End Garage to see the works of more local artists. Create your own art with the help of the Center for Community Arts, which offers

a range of classes for children and adults. Visit centerforcommunityarts.org or call 609-884-7525 for more information. Shop the Gail Pearson Gallery, Gallery d’May, or the Washington Street Gallery. SOMA NewArt Gallery (31Perry Street) features the work of three South Jersey women — Marie Natale, Leslie Martel, and Carol King Hood through June 9. SOMA is open Thursday through Monday, 10am6pm, until May 24, and daily 10-9 through the summer. It’s not just the visual arts that enrich Cape May. The Cape May Music Festival runs May 26 to June 13 (go to capemaymac. org, or see Exit Zero’s most recent color issue, for more information). Pick up some literature at Cape Atlantic Book Company at the City Center Mall. Or see a play. How to Make a Rope Swing plays May 17 through June 7 at Cape May Stage. The East Lynne Theater Company starts their season in mid-June. Elaine’s Dinner Theater offers lighthearted fare. Take a walk on Cape May’s artistic side. Next week: Mark Memorial Day

This handsome guy is white with tannish-brown markings and expressive eyes, is about a year old and came to the shelter as a stray.
