’Tis The Season For Giving In Cape May

Since Sergeant Bill Alvarez passed away in November of 2005, the Cape May Police Department has been carrying on his legacy by continuing his pet project — collecting Christmas presents for underprivileged children. This year, more than 200 kids will benefit from the Sgt Bill Alvarez Toy Drive. Last Sunday, members of the Coast Guard Spouses’ Club and their children donated their time to wrapping gifts in the City Hall auditorium. Aleksey Moryakov

Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Bill Beloro of San Bernardino, CA. How long have you been coming to Cape May? Ever since I left in 1989. I live in California and work in DC, but I try to come at least three times a year. Who are you normally with? I usually drive up by myself. Favorite thing about Cape May? It has that small town feel that I miss. I also miss the change of the seasons. Least favorite thing? The cold. Favorite restaurants? Bella Vida Café, Carney’s, the Ugly Mug, and Lucky Bones. Favorite place to stay? The Beach Shack. I stayed there for my high school reunion. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? Bring back the vollyball courts on the beach! I didn’t see them the last time I was there. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? It keeps me in touch with the goings on about town, and there’s always pictures of normal Cape May days. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? Besides the five color issues a year, it’s 100% black and white. What’s your T-shirt size? Medium, please!

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Diane Stopyra. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Quotes Of The Week

“Here’s to holly and ivy hanging up, and to something wet in every cup.” —Anonymous “The mistletoe hung in the castle hall, the holly branch shone on the old oak wall.”— Thomas Haynes Bayly “Love is like the wild rose-briar; Friendship like the holly-tree.” —Emily Bronte

Random Factoid

HOLLY is a dioecious plant. This means there are both male and female plants. In order for the female plants to grow bright, red berries every year, it must be located 30 to 40 feet within a male so it can be pollinated. Otherwise, the female will grow, but it won’t produce berries.

Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... Holly Berry Cocktail NO, WE are not paying tribute to awardwinning actress Halle Berry with this cocktail. Christmas is almost here, and we thought we’d give you some inspiration for all those upcoming Christmas parties. The Holly Berry Cocktail is a sweet drink that’s perfect for happy hour. If you want an especially holly jolly Christmas, try substituting a raspberry liquer for the raspberry juice. If raspberries aren’t your thing, cranberry juice works just as well!

Ingredients: 1/8 oz fresh lemon juice 1 1/2 oz Plymouth Gin Fresh raspberries (as garnish) Raspberry juice 3 ice cubes Fill a shaker with ice, Plymouth Gin, and fresh lemon juice. Shake and strain into a cocktail glass. Top with raspberry juice and garnish with fresh raspberries.

« FUN FACT... Madame’s Port, who offered hot food catered by the Pilot House for the Mall’s Hospitality Nights last Thursday and Friday, had 900 people come through their doors over the course of the two days. Among the crowd was one couple from Monmouth County who lost their home during Hurricane Sandy. “They always come to Cape May this weekend,” said Madame Port’s owner Pam Smarro. “And though they lost everything, they decided to come this year, too. They said it was time to start Christmas shopping. Spirit and camaraderie are higher this year than any other.”

Upcoming can’t-miss events around town... mark your calendars

ONIGHT December 13, is the night to strike up your flute! It is Renaissance redux with Access to Art, Inc at the Southern Mansion. At 7:30pm, the elegantly festooned 1860s-era mansion will entertain Access’ guests with a reading of a Renaissance play, Bound For Truth, done with area and New York City equity actors from East Lynne Theater Company. There will also be a discussion about Renaissance music in Henry VIII’s England, led by Dr Bert Greenspan, formerly of Rowan University. And just to make it extra special, there will be wine. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for seniors. For more information, call Barbara Beitel at (609) 465-3963. FAMILY Promise of Cape May County and Cabanas cordially invites you to the 7th Annual Christmas in December event, which will take place tomorrow, December 14 at 6pm. The cost of admission is a new, unwrapped gift that will go to the Cape May County Special Services School District. You can also apt to give a $5 donation to Family Promise instead. The eve-

³

ning’s festivities will include a Chinese auction to benefit Family Promise, Christmas music, appearance by Santa Claus, and complementary buffet and happy hour drink specials. Children are welcome to attend the event as well. CHURCH leaders and Jazz Vespers leaders have decided that the All Star Jazz Vespers Benefit contributions will be used to give relief and aid to the victims of Hurrican Sandy, instead of the Presbyterian Church Building Fund. It is still planned that all-time favorite musicians of the Cape May Vespers Stage will be invited to perform. Some of the “Vespers Stars” will be asked to perform Christmas tunes in their own jazz interpretations. The benefit concert will be held at the First Presbyertian Church, Hughes and Decatur Streets, at 3pm on December 16. Limited free parking is available. A $10 minimum donation is expected. Call (609) 884-0690 or visit www.capemayjazzvespers.com for more information. THROUGH December 30, patrons can bring three or more non-perishable items to the Cape May Stage box office and

recieve a $10 discount off regular admission prices to see the holiday comedy, A Tuna Christmas, the hilarious sequel to the hit comedy, Greater Tuna. The Food Closet is specifically requesting laundry detergent, small jars of jelly, small cans of soup, peanut butter, coffee, toilet paper, small boxes of cereal, and boxed pasta. The company also requests that each individual bring a minimum of three non-perishable items or more. Spare what you can for our northern neighbors who are currently in need of your support. A Tuna Christmas runs Thursday through Saturday evenings at 8pm, with Saturday and Sunday matinées at 3pm at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse, 405 Lafayette Street. ANIMAL lovers and tea enthusiasts alike can appreciate this next event. In an effort to benefit Animal Outreach of Cape May County, there will be a garden tea held every Saturday during the winter and spring months. Enjoy your hot drink with homebaked treats at the Highland House, which is located at 131 Broadway, from 1-3pm. If you own a pooch, they are more than welcome to join in on the festivities.

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

Quite A Story PICTURE this. A man pecks away at his typewriter, the one that’s held together with strings of fishing wire. The one which sits on a desk he carved himself in a humble cabin he built by hand. He’s a carpenter by trade, but his passion is writing. And he’s good, too; if only someone would realize it. And then someone does. After the man’s death, in a dusty drawer in a dusty study, his family finds a manuscript. Beautifully written. Surprisingly well-crafted. It’s a work of art. This is the stuff movies are made of: the poor, hardworking farm boy makes good. An ordinary life becomes more poignant than anyone could have imagined. Only this time, it’s not a story. The man — Charles Whitecar Miskelly — was a real person, born in 1880, and his woefully under-read manuscript is real, too. Exit Zero is preparing to publish this novel — a Cape May-centric tale about a white man who was shipwrecked off the Cape in the 1600s, and his eventual ascent to leader of the Lenni Lenape tribe he encounters here — this spring. The manuscript was brought to EZ Global Headquarters one year ago by the author’s grandson, 74-year-old Bridgeton native George Carlisle. And that’s where it stayed, again untouched, for the better part of this year. George, a retired writing professor at St Paul’s School in New Hampshire who has mentored several writers on The New Yorker masthead, called every three months or so to see if we’d gotten a chance to read it yet, and when we told him “no,” he’d cheerfully and patiently thank us for our time. Perhaps he knew that when we did eventually sit down with the book, we’d be completely taken by it.

And that’s what happened. The plot itself is engaging — it’s so believable, no one can say for certain whether or not it’s truly fiction — but it’s the infusion of intimate detail concerning the seascapes and skyscapes of our area that have us so excited to share this manuscript with the rest of the world. We asked George how his grandfather, a boat-builder/chicken breeder who was born and raised in Millville, could have become so familiar with, and articulate about, the natural world, and he explained the man’s penchant for disappearing on his own. He’d spend his off-time fishing on the Maurice River, hoping to catch “the big striper,” and, no doubt, taking careful note of the way the sun would play on the water, or the way the long grasses would bend the morning light. Sometimes, he’d disappear on bike, into the country or the woods, without telling even his wife Ida where he was going. But none of this explains how Charles learned to write such exquisite prose. Forced to leave school after eighth grade to help his family on their farm, he had no formal training. “It’s amazing,” George told us. So amazing, that sometime in the 1950s, Philadelphia-based publisher Lippincott wanted to add it to their fall print-list, but because they wanted to make some minor edits first, Charles wouldn’t stand for it. The manuscript was put away until Charles’ death in 1963, when it was given to George, who says it’s nagged at him ever since. “It made me sad,” he told us. “I always felt it was a shame; I thought, ‘When I die, it’s all going to get burned; no one will ever read it.’ So I feel good about this. I think it’s good; It should be read.” We think so, too, and we’re excited to add this story — one with such a wonderful back story — to your list of beach reads this summer,

when it will be exactly 50 years since Charles’ death. Keep an eye out for it, Cape May, and if any of YOU have unpublished, 50-year-old manuscripts tucked away under your bed, we’d love to read those as well.

Home For The Holidays LATELY, we’ve been hearing a great deal about Family Promise of Cape May County. The Women’s Club of Cape May has pledged to make this nonprofit their fundraising focus for the next two years (see page 44). Last month, the Mad Batter hosted An Evening of Giving Thanks, in order to raise more money for the cause (see pages 50-53). And Cabanas is hosting its seventh annual Christmas in December, which also benefits Family Promise, this Friday (see page 34). In case you haven’t heard yet, this is the group which works to keep homeless families together by providing them with shelter in local houses of worship (Methodist, Presbyterian, and Catholic churches; synagogues; you name it). They offer warm meals, the support services necessary to get the downtrodden members of our community back on their feet and, perhaps most importantly for the 28 families and 63 children who’ve benefited so far, they offer hope. This time last year, a couple with two young girls who’d been used to bringing in $80,000 a year, found themselves without a home. He’d gotten in a car accident that left him unable to work; she’d been laid off. A traditional shelter could not taken in all four family members, so one of the daughters went to a friend’s house; another, to a relative’s. The father wound up sleeping under the Wildwood

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 bridge. A week before Christmas, he thought to inquire about Family Promise, which was able to place the group — all of them — in a church shelter (one of 34 participating houses of worship in this county) in time for Christmas Eve. Members of the congregation asked for the sizes and interests of the girls, so that they might buy some gifts for them to wake up to in the morning. “They told everyone they didn’t want anything,” Family Promise Director Laurie Johnson told us. “Finally being together was enough for them. Of course, they received presents, anyway.” Now, thanks largely to the resources provided by this organization, this family is once again working and enjoying their independence. Because of success stories like this, as well as the generosity of volunteers and pledges, Family Promise is expanding. Their current center of operations — the place where fami-

lies can shower, do laundry, store personal belongings, and prepare each day to leave for their designated house of worship — is located above a produce stand in Rio Grande. “It’s so small,” Laurie told us, “that if you look at the produce stand from the outside, you can’t even tell there’s an upstairs.” But with the help of a loan from the USDA, the organization has purchased a four-times-larger property at 505 Townbank Road. “We’re taking root,” Laurie said. If you’d like to volunteer your time — helping kids with homework, answering phones, lending a hand with laundry — give Family Promise a call at 609-846-7862. “The one thing all of our volunteers have in common,” Laurie told us, “is praciticing love for a stranger, no matter what their faith.”

Have A Nice Day, Dammit WE RECEIVED this letter from a frustrated reader, and we’ve decided to print it because, well, we’ve experienced many of the same frustrations ourselves, which makes us think

many of YOU probably have, too. We know it’s hard to predict what a businesses hours will be, in a town where it’s difficult to predict what the population will even be, from off-season month to off-season month. (Juding by crowd only, this past weekend felt like the Fourth of July, for Pete’s sake.) But it’s a fair point that customer service involves more than just being friendly, and though we think most of the businesses in town do a great job, it only takes a few bad apples, as they say... To Cape May’s shops and restaurants... It’s the holiday season, and I’m doing my best to be of good cheer, but let me tell you, I’ve reached my limit with a lot of Cape May’s businesses. Sure, you have friendly service in the store. I’m greeted with a smile and treated nicely. So then why am I ready to take my money elsewhere? Let me give you some examples... • Today I checked the website of a very popular store, saw that they were open seven days a week, and decided to drive from my Middle

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 Township residence (about 10 miles each way) to buy some holiday presents. Except that when I got there the store was closed, with a sign in the door that tells me that they’re only open Friday through Sunday. I probably should’ve seen this coming; the same store did the same thing to me last year too. • I recently placed a special order at a local shop. I could’ve gotten what I needed faster elsewhere in the county, but this shop has always treated me well. Three weeks later, my order finally came in, except that now the store isn’t open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm like the sign in their window says. It only seems to be open when the owner feels like showing up, which doesn’t seem to be when I’m there. The owner had given me his cell phone number, and I left messages, but he doesn’t call back. I finally found someone there, but he didn’t know what the price of my order was. I offered to come back the next day to pay, but sorry, I was told that the store might or might not be open because the owner was probably going fishing. • Three times in November, I went into Cape May restaurants, perused the menu, ordered something from it, and was told by

a helpful waitress that the dish in question wasn’t on the menu anymore. In fact, it IS on the menu, it’s just not in the kitchen. • I made plans to meet a blind date at another restaurant. Their website says they’re open, and the recording on their phone says the same. So how stupid do I look, sitting outside a closed-for-the-season restaurant waiting for my date? • The team I root for was going to be on Monday Night Football. I made a point of asking the manager of a bar I frequent if they’d be open. “Absolutely,” he said. But when I got there, the place was all but shut down. The big screen TV was dark, the kitchen was closed, all the servers had been sent home, and even though the game started at 8:30, they were locking the doors at 9:00. “Sorry, slow night, not worth staying open,” was the explanation. I can’t be the only one to whom this is happening. Surely other customers are having the same problems. Am I asking too much to want shops and restaurants to update their websites, change their answering machines, and keep regular hours? If a restaurant is going to have a seasonal menu, could you print new menus? Or at least put some sort of note on the out-of-date bill of fare? If you say you’re going to be open, could you be open?

A trip to Cape May for me means at least 20 miles of driving. So when I waste my time and gas trying to shop at places that aren’t open, there’s still a cost. Right now, I get the feeling that too many Cape May businesses value my money, but don’t give a damn about my time. If that doesn’t change, I’m sure that I — and other potential customers — will be opening my wallet at a higher-numbered exit.

Exit Zero Burns Supper

IT WILL be here before you know it. On Thursday, January 24, Exit Zero will once again host what promises to be the event of the winter season at the Ugly Mug. We are, of course, referring to the Ninth Annual Exit Zero Burns Supper, which pays homage to the national poet of Scotland, Robert Burns. It’s a sell-out every year. A bagpipe brigade, whisky cake, some of Robbie Burns best poetry, and delicious haggis (and fish and chips for those who don’t want to try Scotland’s national dish) make this a night worth marking your calendars for. Reserve your tickets early; they’re already selling. You can do so by giving us a ring at 609-770-8479, or by visiting ezstore.us. You don’t have to be Scottish to have a great time, and tickets are the same price as they were the first year — just $30.

« FUN FACT... There were three acts providing live entertainment at the Sunset Beach Gift Shop Hospitality night, according to owner Larry Hume: North Jerseybased Ryan Michael Richards, whose profession is music therapy; Richie Grasso who wrote “music that was big in the 60s” (think “Sweet, Cherry Wine”), and the local Sun Dogs group, who’ve established quite the fanatical following.

Animal Outreach Responds

Terry O’Brien ruffled some feathers, er, fur with his last “Undertow” column. Here the non-profit reacts...

A

NIMAL Outreach would like to respond to Terry O’Brien’s comments in last week’s edition of Exit Zero’s “Undertow” column. He criticized Animal Outreach for opening an Adoption Center that cannot house dogs. His comments can best be described as careless — especially when you consider how much thought Animal Outreach put into the selection of a site location and how much we care for our great dogs available for adoption. Terry asks: “Wouldn’t it have been wiser to hold out for a location that had a lease permitting dogs AND cats?” Animal Outreach responds: We would have waited a long time to find a property that allowed dogs. Noise and other general care/upkeep issues makes it easier for us to house cats and much more difficult for dogs. And our foster homes are a fantastic way to care for our dogs because the dogs are in an actual home with a loving family. We need more foster families, by the way! Terry, if you (or anyone else) can help we would greatly appreciate it.

Terry asks: “But wouldn’t it have behooved all involved to have a display room for dogs and not have potential adopters trekked all over town?” Animal Outreach responds: We don’t ask potential adopters to trek all over. In fact, we showcase dogs during business hours and by appointment at the Animal Outreach Adoption Center. Actually, we do better than that! We can visit your home with a dog. How is that for customer service? Oh, and Terry, we invite you to be a dog transporter.

It would be great if you (or anybody reading) can help us transport dogs from their lovely foster homes to the Animal Outreach Adoption Center on our open days of Friday, Saturday, or Sunday from 12-3pm. Terry says: “Now before you go off halfcockatooed…” Animal Outreach asks: Terry, did you mean to say “half-cockapooed…” with a “p” in your attempt (note: attempt) at a clever pun? You meant to refer to the dog, not the bird, right? Terry, find out more about the great dogs we showcase at the Animal Outreach Adoption Center by volunteering with us. We have positions whereby you can help prepare the Center for our opening days. Animal Outreach uses the latest social media tools to get the word out about our adoptable animals, and we have success! In fact, we have adopted out three dogs from the Adoption Center so far (compared to one cat). A 3:1 ratio of dog adoptions vs cat adoptions demonstrates that we care for all dogs and cats throughout the region. Terry (and others) can call 609-898-1PET or visit aocmc.org to learn more.

«LOWER Cape May Regional High School rising star, Kyra Adams

was selected to sing with the All-South Jersey Choir as a Soprano II. Kyra was amongst 180 singers selected from approximately 300. The daughter of Dan and Denise Adams of Cape May, Kyra started singing when she was in second grade, when her teacher complimented her beautiful voice. The junior joined the cast of Elaine’s Dinner Theater and by fifth grade, she was performing in her first show there. Kyra is involved in the fall play and spring musical at LCMR. She loves musical theatre because of the choreography and of course, the singing. “Music is where I can be myself and sing,” said Kyra of her passion. She trains both inside and outside of school everyday with her choir director and personal vocal coach. This blooming star wishes to continue her passion in musical theater in the near future at New York University, Rollins University, or Emerson University. The Undertow

I

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever

’M SURE if you tried really hard you could find a more awkward place to hold a holiday gathering than the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal, though I can’t think of one. I speak only logistically; the event itself, A Ferry Merry Christmas, is good fun put on by good people. The building, however, could not be less hospitable to the human life form. But between the face painters, balloon sculptors, craft tables, game room and availability of alcohol, you’d also have to try pretty hard not to have a good time. Thanks to all who put it together. Speaking of the holidays, I’d like to take a moment to shamelessly plug my book, Murder-Oke and Other Spooky Cape May Tales, which is a perfect stocking stuffer, in that it fits perfectly into a stocking. It also, in my humble opinion, contains a couple of pretty good short stories (there are four in all, I’ll let you decide which couple are good). Murder-Oke has turned into something of a little book that could. I make about $4 for every copy sold, and it’s never something I’ll retire on unless I live to be a million, but it keeps plugging away and of that I am very proud. So thanks to all

of you who’ve made it part, however small, of your lives, and allow me to continue to say I get paid to be a writer (the structure of that sentence notwithstanding). Of course, it’s also just as likely that it’s just been my mom buying a couple copies a week. Either way… If you’re reading this before 5pm Thursday, please send a lucky thought my way as I will be at Charlie’s Bar in Somers Point, hoping my name gets drawn to win a Man Cave courtesy of 97.3 ESPN. Since I never win stuff like this, I’m not getting my hopes up too high (though if god is listening I could REALLY use this), but here’s the interesting part; Thursday, I registered online for the contest. Friday, while working on my short

story, I get a Twitter alert. Now, I rarely check my Twitter account (I find it a supreme waste of good Internet space), so I ignored it. But something nagged at me, so I checked it. And lo and behold I had an urgent tweet from Exit 0 International Jazz Festival saying, “Terry! Call 97.3 ESPN! They just called your name!” I got in just under the wire (you have 30 minutes to claim your spot), and if I win this thing I owe Exit 0 Jazz a cappuccino. I’d say a large beer, but you know how these jazz folks are. Had another date night with Jack Wright last weekend. This time he brought along everyone’s favorite Polish photographer, Maciek Nabracadabra, and local fitness guru Mark Chamberlain. Jack immediately started picking at Mark’s sartorial choice of V-neck sweater over a button-down shirt and Spanx, and Mark picked on Jack’s choice of red flannel over THAT belly. I, in my black long sleeve pullover and jeans, hit it right down the fairway. Maciek wore a thick wool belted jumper and corduroys, which I thought clashed with the cream and red theme of The Ebbitt Room sitting area and oh god please how do I get out

The Undertow ? From Page 41 of this sentence. Anyway, as these things often do, we began at The Ebbitt Room drinking Innis & Gunn, the Scottish beer, empty bottles of which pave the road to hell. We all made fun of Mark’s freshman pour, which had a lot of head on it. Like Mark. (Bald-on-bald crime!) He then gave us a beautiful description of local artist Stan Sperlak’s Crow Creek Studio, which uses the sun and rocks to generate heat (sounds hippie commune-ish to me). My neighbor, Corey Brandt, works for Stan and is, apparently, a direct descendant of Colonel Joe Brandt, a native-American soldier who fought in the Civil War. Boy, you think you know your neighbors… It’s also possible I’m misreading my very sloppy, beer-scented notes, and Corey is actually a direct descendant of Colonel Joe Sanders, who makes a tasty fried chicken. It’s also worth mentioning that Corey’s wife, Ruth, has lost more than 100 pounds, employing North Beach Health Club’s crossfit techniques, and she really looks fabulous. Interesting fact; when all the Brandts are home, their house becomes the fourth largest city in NJ. (They have… a lot of kids, and I now look forward to getting my ass kicked by the whole clan…) Our talk remained on fitness, where the boys made fun of me for walking on my treadmill (even though I’m pretty sure I could take Jack in a medium-distance foot race) before Mark suggested I use the Tabata approach, which consists of going hard for 20 seconds and resting for 10. The same approach Mark takes with his love life. ZING! (Full credit to Maciek for that one. Forget what you’ve heard about the Polish; this one is pretty sharp.) We then got into a semiinteresting conversation about right-handers vs left-handers and how many there are of each in the world (best research I could on my Android; 6.3-9.2% of the Earth’s population is lefthanded, including me). This led us to ponder the deeper implica-

tions of genetic imprinting vs. natural selection. And then, we snacked! I had a less-than-stellar dining experience last time we were in The Ebbitt Room, so in the interests of fairness, I would now like to tell you how f***ing amazing the Pale Ale Crispy Calamari with Lime Ginger Aoli and Picked Bell Peppers and Onions was. Maciek found the idea of fancy mayo abhorrent until he tried one. This was a spectacular rebound from the last dish I had there; brilliantly cooked scallops over an unfortunately seasoned chutney. We then moved the party over to The Brown Room at Congress Hall for an uneventful nightcap, though it was here that I learned Exit Zero Publishing will be welcoming Mike DeMusz back into the fold as house illustrator, store cashier, delivery guy, chief cook and bottle washer. In Jack’s words he was “giving a good gig to a good guy.” I could not agree more. As ever, all this drunken carousing was brought to you by Aart’s Taxi; reasonable rates and 100% DUI proof. Did you know, according to a university study, that you can lose weight watching horror movies? Might I suggest The Shining, The Exorcist and Anything Starring Whoopi Goldberg. Parker Smith (Fvuhrt!) has requested, nay DEMANDED, that anytime I mention Parker Smith (Fvuhrt!) that Parker Smith (Fvuhrt!) should have his own Parker Smith (Fvuhrt!) accompanying Parker Smith (Fvuhrt!) sound effect a la Will Knapp (Ding!) and Holly Knapp (Dong!) and this Parker Smith (Fvuhrt!) sound effect is the closest I could come to writing a silent-but-deadly fart sound. That’s all for this week. I hope you’re enjoying “A Very Zombie Christmas” as much as I’m enjoying writing it. And you can catch me, Will Knapp (Ding!), Bill Caterini and Mike O’Brien every Saturday this month at Good Night Irene’s brew pub for our acoustic/open mic/karaoke show, and Terry O’ke every Friday at the Rio Station, where I will be hosting New Year’s Eve. ’Til next time, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Women’s Club of Cape May hosted a sell-out fashion show and luncheon at the Cold Spring Presbyterian Chruch Hall on Seashore Road, in order to benefit Family Promise, a volunteer organization that helps homeless families achieve independence. “The non-profit provides places to live and directs them to proper job training,” said Elinor Braher, the Women’s Club chairwoman. “It’s fantastic.” For the next two years, Family Promise will be the group’s “special state project,” meaning they’ll be hosting fundraisers to benefit the cause, beginning with a card party and game night this spring that is “absolutely” open to anyone who wants to come out and support. Pictured above are fashion show models Marie Shoup, Jackie Poulopoulos, Maria Hollerbach, Mary Ann Calhoun, Janis Scott, Alice Olszewski, Lorey Bivins, and Elinor Brasher, the evening’s narrator.

How long have you worked here: I’ve been at The Ebbitt Room for a year and a half. What’s the best thing on the dessert menu? In my opinion? Definitely the chocolate stout cake. We top it off with homemade peppermint ice cream that cleanses the palette so nicely. What’s the most labor intensive dessert? The toffee pudding has been on the menu since the beginning, and perfecting it has been a labor of love since then. Recently, we added toffee chips within the cake itself, and improved on the sauce, so it’s even better. Best advice you’ve ever received? Keep on pushin’ on, and good things will come your way. What’s your other dream job? Probably pursuing my music; I’m a drummer. WANT TO NOMINATE AN EMPLOYEE OF THE WEEK? EMAIL DIANE@EXITZERO.US.

The Old Fogey

E

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

VERY week, a liveried footman hand-delivers a note on vellum paper, on which is the theme of my column. He solemnly presents it, I break the waxed seal (which seems to show a round sneering face, possibly of a Scotchman) and read the one or two words hammered there by an antique typewriter. Sometimes we laugh at the subject, Kitchener (my faithful retainer), Albert (my faithless dog) and I. Sometimes we weep. Sometimes we collectively scratch our heads in puzzlement (and in Albert’s case, in pursuit of a flea or two). Sometimes I am enraged and chase the footman from the mansion with threats of a sound thrashing ringing in his ears. Today was one of mild puzzlement, some confused discussion and then a chorus of “ah, now I see”s. I had been expecting something festive, perhaps, as the owner of this impressive organ is a sentimental sort, prone to weeping at the sight of a lost dog or a showing of It’s a Wonderful Life on television. In fact, I had in anticipation almost

completed a fanciful column on the subject of Santa Claus, and the year he visited Cape May in person, had one too many whiskies at the Brown Room and became stuck in a chimney at the Virginia Hotel, whereupon he was roasted slowly over the course of the next day, his cries lost in the wind. Instead, I am suddenly writing about “Holly,” and am obviously transported back to those heady days in the 1980s when Holly Johnston’s band, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, released their foot-tapping tune “Relax” and all of Cape May seemed to be

wearing XXXL white tees with the mysterious “Frankie Says” emblazoned on the front. The tune played on a loop in Martini Beach, and all the hip youngsters would sing along to the catchy but baff ling lyrics: “Relax, don’t do it, when you want to, go do it. Relax, don’t do it, when you want to come…” That Frankie seemed a cheery sort, I must say, and his music was well liked in particular by Cape May’s younger, more muscular lads, who tended to congregate in that bar for a colorful cocktail at sunset. Oh, the fun times we all had: “Come,” the chaps would sing in admirable harmony, “But shoot it in the right direction.” So popular was the song that I even suggested we adopt it as Cape May’s official theme tune, as “Come” and “shoot in the right direction” were tailor made slogans to attract tourists to this city, I thought. Curiously, my idea was not adopted, though my backup of a cover of The Village People’s “YMCA” — entitled “YMCM” (Young Man’s Cape May) went down a lot better, and was played statewide on local radio for one happy summer.

11/23: 25th Annual Messiah Sing-Along At Cape Island Baptist Church

When the community sing-along began 25 years ago, the orchestra — which plays Handel’s Messiah— consisted of one violinist, one organist, and one pianist. Now, due largely to the event’s great word of mouth, the orchestra encompasses about 25 different musicians. The chorus includes 80 singers (and eight professional soloists) who come from “all over,” according to Cape Island Baptist Church’s Music Director, Ruth Fritsch, for no other reason than their love of song. In years past, the church has had to turn people away at the door. PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

A Very Zombie Christmas

“The 12 Zombies of Christmas...,” chapter three of Terry O’Brien’s chilling holiday short story Gurney Street Beach, Cape May, 3:46am:

C

HRIS Kersh was a tall, goodlooking man in his late 20s, ropy but well-muscled, which was evident even beneath his red and gold Cape My Beach Patrol jacket, flapping noisily in the stiff breeze. His nose ran, his eyes leaked. With a sniff he wiped at them with the back of a hand, the tears and snot immediately drying into a thin glaze. The glaze was several layers thick, cracked like the skin of a dried corpse, and it flew off in the breeze. Next to him was an old surf board, the tool with which he had gained most of that ropy muscle, and a shovel, the tool with which he would bury his friend. Merry Christmas. “It’s time, buddy…” he said and the words whisked away in the morning blow. He dropped the large black trash bag and it hit the ground with a heavy thud, bringing with it a fresh raft of tears he absently wiped away, again. His face was ruddy in the biting cold, but had reached the point of numbness, aided by the heroic amount of whisky he’d ingested in the last hour. It had been tough going, lugging three large items the half-mile from his Sewell Avenue apartment to this stretch of beach, at times turning into a routine out of The Three Stooges; dropping this, bending over to pick up that, dropping the other thing. But he did not want to make three trips, and only now did it dawn on him that the whole endeavor would have been much easier had he used his bike. He shrugged and jabbed the shovel into the sand. It was dark, and cold, too dark and cold to be doing what he was doing, but he was resolute, and so it was that he worked on the burial hole behind the beachfront restaurant. He forgot what it was called now, but it once had been Henry’s on the Beach, where he’d spent his teens and early 20s, learning to work hard, to be a man, to fall in love every summer, usually with a hostess or server. Only once with a prep cook. He’d learned early to avoid female kitchen staff, like a scalded dog learns to avoid the stove. Each downward blow of the shovel brought him closer to goodbye and drew more tears. It was on this stretch of beach where he

Next to him was an old surfboard, the tool with which had had gained most of that ropy muscle, and a shovel, the tool with which he would bury his friend. first learned to surf with his buddies, and where he’d met his best friend. He vividly recalled riding out on a swell, waiting for a tasty one. Then looking up and seeing the mangy little mongrel sniffing through the backpack he’d left on the jetty. “Hey!” he’d yelled and paddled in as fast as he could. He had been catching a few waves before work and his uniform was in the bag. By the time he reached the shore it was torn to pieces; shirt, shorts, apron, sneakers. Shredded. His friends laughed and broke his balls, as his friends were wont to do, and the dog just yapped at him, ready for more play. Chris had been furious, but as he eyeballed the furry little cuss his fury gave way to something else; love. But deeper than love. Companionship. Funny, he couldn’t tell you who the other surfers were that day, but he would always remember the way that black and brown Airedale terrier pawed at his feet, begging for adventure. In the months that followed, the friends would change, but the dog, Max he called him, always remained. He’d posted signs around town about the lost dog, always secretly hoping no one would claim him, and in the fall of that year, when no one did

step forward, his parents let Chris bring him home. By the following summer they had become as much a part of the Gurney Street beach as sand and horse flies. They would spend all morning gallivanting around the beach, then Max would wait patiently on the dunes outside the restaurant for Chris to finish his shift. Max was irresistible and grew fat on discarded bits of prime rib and strip steak that customers would toss his way. During their third summer together Chris was approached by the captain of the beach patrol to join their ranks and soon after, he and Max were getting paid to gallivant. The summers flew by this way; Chris eventually graduating high school, then college, Max by his side, the kid brother he never had. They were best friends. They moved into their first apartment together five years ago and enjoyed a happy coexistence. There were other benefits; Chris had always been painfully shy, and nothing helped break the ice with a girl like a beautiful, bounding Airedale. But recently, the inevitable began. Max

A Very Zombie Christmas ? From Page 59 developed a hitch in his gait, dysplasia. His vision started to go and he bumped into as many fire hydrants as he peed on. No longer was he able to chase the waves and torment the seagulls. All that was left was the wait for the end, which, fortunately for Max, did not linger. He’d been just a pup when they met, and was somewhere around 15 when he passed. A good, long life for a dog. But not long enough for Chris. Openly sobbing, he finished the hole, tears and snot flying willy-nilly, consumed. He fell to his knees, trembling, untied the bag, and nuzzled the snout of his best friend. Still warm. “So long, old pal,” he sobbed. He tied the bag, placed it gently in the hole, and covered it. Max would now rest forever under the deck of Henry’s on the Beach. He tossed the shovel, grabbed the board. “One more ride for you, buddy.” He strode to the water. The wetsuit kept him from freezing to death, but just barely. Even in his alcohol-numbed state it

was obvious he needed to get out of the elements. But first, a ride for Max. He shucked the jacket, ran 10 steps into the water, then lay out on the board, pulled himself further out with long, powerful strokes. Past the jetty he sat up and oriented back toward the beach, waiting for a decent wave. He lolled about, breathing deeply, clearing his mind. He knew this sadness would pass, that life would go on. He also knew he would never own another dog, the pain was too much. At least, he wouldn’t own a dog for a while. Ah, who was he kidding; he’d probably be at Animal Outreach picking out a pound puppy before New Year’s. He peered back the shore and was surprised to see someone ambling down the beach entrance from the promenade. It was still full dark, but the shape was unmistakably male. And, from the uneven gait, drunk, walking off a Christmas Eve bender at the Ugly Mug or Cabanas. Chris shook his head knowingly and turned back to the expansive ocean; several far off rollers broke the horizon. He wanted to ride one in honor of Max, but he did not want to freeze to death doing it. If these incoming swells proved unworthy he

would pack it in. Max would understand. He was a good dog. Then he turned back to the shore and saw something he did not quite believe; the man who’d been stumbling down the walkway was now under the restaurant’s deck, digging at Max’s grave. “Hey!” Chris shouted, surprised, furious, “GET AWAY FROM MY DOG!” What happened next happened quickly; Chris lay down on the board, pulled for shore. A wave caught him sideways, sent him tumbling, noise and thunder as it engulfed him. Then inky, bubbling silence as he went under. A calm surfer would have balled himself up and waited for the wave to pass. But Chris was angry. So he clawed toward the surface, where the follow-up wave lifted him at its apex and sent him hurtling into the jetty. Trouble. He somehow managed to get his board between himself and the rocks. With a jolt they met and everything went pear-shaped; Noise and silence. Anger and panic. Sound and fury. Then blackness as skull met stone. *** THE thing that had been CMPD officer

Todd Reagan shuffled blindly down the promenade because it had no eyes or face. The front of its skull was gone, torn away by the beast in the Pratt house as it fed. Dead. Then not dead. The remainder of its head, the one small piece of brain left intact, filled with a hot buzzing. And a yearning. So it got up. And walked. With no senses to guide it, it moved whichever way the buzzing hunger told it to, this way and that. Then it felt wind, cooling wind, and it went that way. Had it a mouth it would have moaned in freakish misery. Instead it just made wet grunting sounds, its ruined jaw hanging like a shark’s teeth necklace from its face. The further this way the cooler it got. Then cool wetness, which made it feel better. It turned, the ground became soft and tilted down, it stumbled but kept on towards the cool. Then… something else. Something beneath the cool that brought up its a ravenous hunger. Meat. The unbearable buzzing acted as a compass. It walked, then crawled, then it was digging. Its hands found the plastic bag, ripped it open to the warm meat underneath. In the distance a voice protested, barely audible, then back to the meat. Its fingers dug into the soft flesh of the furry animal. It jammed its fist into its mouth, but there was nothing to chew with, no recognizable mouth. Its suffering grew; meat in its hands but no way to eat it. Desperate, it stuffed a hand down its own throat, then another, like stuffing sausage. The pain was exquisite but soon its belly grew full and

the buzzing quieted. For a moment. Then there was another thing. Like the meat, but stronger. Metallic. Blood. It turned toward the ocean. *** CHRIS awoke in the cold sand, seawater filling his mouth. He coughed and heaved and his lungs were ice, his chest full of stabbing cold. He rolled onto his side and vomited. A rhythmic pounding filled his head and everything seemed very far away as if listening into a conch shell. He shook out the ringing in his ears. Once. Twice. This sent shrieking pain through his head but also cleared his senses. Up on his hands and knees he once more emptied the contents of his stomach onto the sand, on top of which dripped a copious amount of blood from a gash on his forehead. He blew a rocket out of each nostril, spat, tried to get to his feet. “Whoah…” The world swam away and he staggered to his knees. Through salt-blurred eyes he saw the strange man approaching. He wore a dark uniform and jacket. There was a gold star on it. Police. “Thank God,” Chris said, “give me a hand, will you?” He reached out to the cop, who took his hand and pulled. “Mnguh…” “What?” The cop thrust Chris’ hand into its maw. Chris felt his hand slide down the cop’s throat like a meat sleeve. “CHRIST!” He kicked and pulled at the creature, but the cop held fast, pulled him in closer, his arm sank deeper. Panic gripped him. He did not know what was happening, but had the very base feeling

A Very Zombie Christmas ? From Page 62 that the next 30 seconds would go a long way towards determining how long the rest of his life would be. “NO!” With every bit of his ropy strength he pulled them up the beach, toward the deck, and the shovel. Every inch was war; the creature would not yield. But finally they were there, at the deck, and he had the shovel. “DIE!” He thrust the point of the spade, one-handed, into the creature’s gut. It slowed a bit but did not stop. Chris got a first real look at its face; a meaty, sinewy mass. Swallowing his arm. Thus motivated, Chris pushed harder. His other hand, the one the creature was eating, started to sting and he realized it was being digested. “JESUS!” Terrified, he pushed the shovel downward until the thing was on its back. He slowly pushed himself up the shovel, bearing all his weight down on the creature, until the spade pierced through the creatures back, impaling it against the dune like a bug specimen under glass. Now, with the thing under some kind of control, Chris could gather himself, yet he still could not pull his arm from its gullet, and the pain in his hand grew hotter. Think… And a thought occurred. With his free hand he sunk the thumb into the creature’s throat until, with a pop, he broke the skin and could feel his other arm in the windpipe of the beast. He hooked his thumb and sawed it back and forth, pulling upward as hard as he could. The wound opened wider until, finally, the flesh around its neck was free. Chris planted his feet and pulled with all his strength. With a ripping pop the thing’s

spine gave way and the head with it. Inelegant, but effective. The body fell dead. The head, incredibly, kept actively gnawing at his arm like a hideous bracelet. With a few well-placed blows from the shovel he was able to discard the nightmarish thing, then fell to his seat. He looked at his right hand; the fingers were disturbingly red, burnt by the thing’s stomach acids. The neoprene suit protected the rest of his arm, only the hand throbbed and stung as if with a hundred paper cuts. He staggered to his feet and numbly made his way to the surf, washed himself off in the freezing salt water. Clean, he retrieved the surf board, grabbed his jacket and trudged back up the beach. A million thoughts careened through his head, but all he wanted right now was a long, hot shower. He could sort the rest out later. But as he made his way toward the promenade, a sound stopped him. A mewling whimper. He turned. And saw Max, insides splayed, torso rent asunder, pawing weakly at the sand, eyes white, tongue black and lolling. Zombies, Chris thought with certain finality. I’m dealing with zombies. He knelt by his old friend, grabbed his muzzle, nuzzled his cold snout, and drove the shovel through his brain. Chris wept one last time as he gave it several violent twists. And then through the disembodied head. Made mincemeat of it. A macabre Hamburger Helper. Diced that shit up good so it could never hurt him again. Then he did the next thing he could think of; made his way to the police department, where things were not going much better. But they probably had a shower. Next week: All I Want for Christmas is YOU

When the Cape May Brewery opened in the industrial complex of the Cape May Airport in July of 2011 — with equipment welded and repurposed from stainless steel tanks found in Trenton recycling plants, dented keg shells from various scrapyards, and hot water heaters purchased on eBay — they were distributing to just one bar: Cabanas. Now, their beer can be found in 25 Cape May County establishments and, just a few weeks ago, they launched their new 10-beer tap room. It’s the hottest new venue for local artists including, last month, the Irish Pipe Brigade, as well as local food vendors, including Empanada Mamas and, coming soon, Key West Tacos. “I never expected this,” said owner Ryan Krill. “When we opened, we envisioned a little 10x10 tap room. Now, we’ve got a 2,000 square foot space, and it’s still not enough.”

The Answer Lady

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I was at the West Cape May Christmas Parade, standing on the curb enjoying the spectacle, when a woman walked by, shouted my name and asked very enthusiastically how I was doing. I am embarrassed to report that I did not recognize her (although I will say in my defense that she was expertly disguised in a knit hat and scarf). Luckily, she kept walking before I had a chance to respond. I clearly dodged a social bullet, but what should I do if this uncomfortable situation happens again? — Hello, You Dear You The Answer Lady has addressed this topic before, but the holidays present the perfect opportunity for a refresher on this particular social snafu, what with all the parties, parades and other crowd-centric festivities this time of year. The Answer

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Lady tends to rely on other people in these situations. When someone turns up whose name escapes her, she immediately says something like: “Oh, hi! Do you know my sister, Patty?” She then expects Patty to step up, stick out her hand and say “Hello, I’m Patty — and you are?” (And if Patty does not do this, she will suffer the consequences later.) If you do not happen to have your own personal Patty standing nearby, honesty is often the best recourse, something along the lines of “I’m SO sorry, but I’ve had

a hot toddy and I am utterly atrocious with names. Please remind me of yours!” (A big smile and batting of eyelashes here is also useful.) And if you really panic, diversion is your only option: “Oh, look, there goes Billy Briggs! Tell me he doesn’t look just like one of Santa’s elves!” Dear Answer Lady I recently attended a beef and beer event at the VFW. It was a buffet, with communal seating. When my wife and I arrived, we put our jackets on the backs of our chairs to save the seats. We got a beverage, socialized a bit, got some food and returned to our table, where we were surprised to see that a family of four had made themselves comfortable. Has the jacket on the chair rule changed? — Standing Around Dear Standing The Answer Lady had a similar experience at a recent Breakfast With Santa event. In the absence of assigned seating, one can “save” a chair with a jacket, for a reasonable length of time. A friendly “I’m sorry, but these are our seats” should get the offenders off their duffs.

’Twas the night before Christmas, and all over town People were walking around with a frown. “I’ve been to the shops and I’ve been to the mall, I’ve scoured each one, the large and the small. All the gifts look the same, and nowhere I seek Can I find a present that’s really unique. I want ornaments, music boxes and books of the best; Scarves, jewelry and teapots that are not like the rest.” Then they heard Santa say, “Before it’s too late, Try the Carriage House Shop at the Physick Estate.”

This week, Tom Sims, Executive Director of Cape May Film Society, reviews “Flight”

ET the Oscar buzz begin! As you all know, the Cape May Film Society hosts an annual PreOscar Party at Mad Batter, and this year (well, next year — February 24 at 5:30pm) will be no different. There will be food, cash bar, and chances to win! So file this column under the heading, “It’s never too early to talk about the Oscars.” This week, we’ll take a look at Denzel Washington, who has people talking Oscar with his new film, Flight. The movie has been called a “mystery thriller” with Washington in the lead role playing Whip Whitaker, a veteran airline pilot, who miraculously crash lands his plane after a mid-air catastrophe, saving nearly every soul on board. Whip is honored as a hero, but as more about the incident is learned, speculation surfaces as to the true fault of the crash and what really happened on the plane. Washington has won two Oscars in the past (be the first to email capemayfilm@hotmail.com with

Oscar-winner Denzel Washington stars in the mystery thriller, Flight either name of the two films for which he won the Academy Award and receive a free ballot to win prizes at our Pre-Oscar Party). Denise Green, member of the Cape May Film Society, posts this review of the film: “Once again, you could not take your eyes off Denzel. He is an incredible actor, and the film may not have been as watchable without him in the lead role. The flight sequence was fabulous — it was scary, heart-pounding. next day. I definitely recommend Flight.” The film is getting favorable reviews so Denise is not alone in her praise. Flight also brings fellow Oscar alumni director Robert Zemeckis together with Washington. As of late, Zemeckis has been working in animated features as director for films such as A Christmas Carol (2009), Beowulf (2007), and The Polar Express (2004). Again for a free ballot to win prizes at our Pre-Oscar Party, be the first to email us with the name of the film for which Zemeckis won his Oscar. Thank you for another great year from the Cape May Film Society. Many of you attended our Oscar party last year, our summer camp film screening in June, and the Film Festival in October. What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you and where are you from? I’m Helen Miller, and I recently moved here from Philadelphia; I’ve always wanted to retire here. It’s so peaceful, and opposite of the crowded city. What are retiring from? I was a waitress. Isn’t there anything you miss about the city? Macy’s! What were you doing when we interrupted you? A little Christmas shopping on the Washington Street Mall. For anything in particular? Books for my grandchildren. Are you going anywhere special for the holiday? My daughter’s house in Mt Laurel. Favorite Cape May spot? At the Gazebo on Beach Avenue; great view of the waves! Activity Of The Week

S

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Search the beach for sea glass.

UPERSTORM Sandy churned up some interesting things on its journey up the Atlantic coast — a 500-pound training bomb; a schooner that ran aground in 1919; love letters from World War II; and a tunic owned by a 1933 graduate of West Point named Chester B. deGavre. Not all of the extra stuff on the sand is valuable or interesting, of course, which is why the Nature Center of Cape May recruited volunteers for post-Sandy beach clean ups. For collectors of sea glass, however, Sandy may have turned up some treasures. Sea glass, also called “mermaid tears” or “tears of the sea,” is weathered glass found along the coast. Unlike Cape May diamonds, which are pure quartz crystals, sea glass comes from manmade products. Remnants of bottles, jars, pottery or even windshields are tossed about in the ocean, sometimes for decades, until they take on a beautiful frosted look. Sea glass can be turned into art or jewelry, or just collected in simple jars to create a souvenir of time spent on the beach.

Spotting sea glass, especially a rare piece, is an exciting moment for fanatical collectors. Most sea glass is brown, white or green and likely comes from beer and soda bottles. Other colors, like turquoise, amber and yellow are less common. Old Noxzema and Vick’s jars yield pretty blue pieces, and red pieces, probably from tail lights or nautical lights, are highly prized by collectors. Sea glass is becoming rare, partly due to recycling, and partly because there are so many collectors. Each year, hundreds attend festivals hosted by organizations

like the North American Sea Glass Association to share crafting tips and discuss the best beaches for sea glass — most are near former garbage dumps or manufacturing facilities. Experts also warn collectors how to spot counterfeit sea glass, because purists turn up their noses at tumbled craft glass posing as the real deal. Winter is the perfect time to search in Cape May. Remember to bring a container, like a beach bucket or a sturdy bag. Look for bits of sparkle below the high tide line. Once you find the sea glass, you can combine it with some wire to make jewelry or wine glass markers, or press it with seashells into grout to make a tile trivet or to decorate a picture frame. Whale’s Tale sells a “Sea Glass Hunter’s Handbook.” Visit the West End Garage or the shops at Sunset Beach to find jewelry and art made by local artists, or find home decor in the colors of sea glass to perk up your winter home. Most importantly, while you’re strolling the Cape May beach in winter, remember to look down. Next week: Celebrate a winter wedding

JUSTICE is a one-year old lab/pit mix, who is social, playful and fun-loving — amazing, considering he was left tied to a fence and abandoned by a — well, this is a family publication, so we won’t say what that person is. Justice is smart and knows “sit,” and he can easily learn more commands and tricks. He is up to date on vaccines and can go to a home that has other dogs and children over the age of 10. The adoption fee is $95.

«

MOOKIE is an American one-year-old pit bull who is kid, cat, and dog friendly (what a grea combo!). He is extremely active but also submissive (another great combo!), and he needs consistent training, gentle discipline and daily exercise. The person lucky enough to give it to him will be rewarded with a loyal, obedient and affectionate friend. Mookie is smart, and he enjoys playing “catch me if you can” and running after balls (AW!).

«

OLLIE is an intelligent two-year-old with an exceptionally sweet disposition who came to the shelter as a stray. He loves going for walks, running and getting attention, and he needs an owner who can give him the training and exercise that will keep him happy and healthy. Ollie cannot go to a home with cats, dogs or kids. The adoption fee is only $95, and includes micro-chipping, neutering, and up-to-date vaccinations.

PIPER and SHILOH are two of the cutest pets we’ve had in these pages, and they’re still in the shelter?! That breaks our hearts here at EZ. We’d tell you to have a heart and take them home, but that makes it sound like a sacrifice, and these guys are easy and sweet. Best buddies since birth, they just want to love you... so let them already!

«

LARS has been at the shelter since August, and he’s really starting to warm up and show everyone what a loving guy he can be. He’s just a tad nervous when he first meets people (wouldn’t you be? we’re about 15 times his size!), but he warms up quickly; you’ll have a hard time telling him no. The adoption fee is $35.

We are open during our remodeling!

«

CALLIE came to the shelter with a slew of siblings, but only Nigel, Ninja, and she are left. See how perky this one’s ears are? That’s because she thinks she might just have a home for the holidays... pretty tough to diappoint that eager face, huh? These are sweet kids who are just as content playing with you as they are laying around.$70.

‘Tis The Season For Laughter

T IS likely the most hilarious holiday show you’ve ever seen. Playing now through the end of 2012, A Tuna Christmas, is sure to brighten your holiday season. In the play, master comedians Jody Cook and Turner Crumbley bring their deft comedic timing, trademark characterizations, and split-second costume changing abilities. The two portray 24 citizens of Tuna, the third smallest town in Texas, where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies! This time, it’s 24 hours before Christmas and times are tough. Bertha Bumiller’s drunken husband hasn’t come home, her kids are messes, and a Christmas Phantom is destroying the town’s decorations. Add a disaster-prone production of A Christmas Carol, and you’ve got holiday fare that would tickle the funny bones of even the most bah-humbug Scrooges. Playing Thursdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm, A Tuna Christmas is your chance to stuff your stock-

Bird Droppings

H

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

OW do you feel about Cape May? Silly question. Who doesn’t love this place? Moving on. How do you feel about Cape May’s natural history, its’ environment, its’ biological riches? Another silly question. What makes Cape May so special is the blend of natural elements that enliven this strand of sand. What if you could package Cape May? Put it between hard covers. Have it on your coffee table or present it, with your sanctifying signature, to all your non-Cape May friends? Perhaps sign it “Greetings from Cape May, from we who are lucky enough to live here.” You can! I mean you CAN package and send a gift of Cape May; you can sign it anyway you choose. This fusion of natural elements (and human ambition) are housed in a book entitled, Birds of Cape May. The author, Kevin T. Karlson, is not only a celebrated nature photographer, he is a Cape May County resident. OH NO (you may be thinking). Not

ANOTHER coffee table book. You’re right. It’s not another coffee table book. It’s a coffee table book that will banish the rest to the back of the bookshelf. The images are breathtaking. Stunning. Evocative. Better than life. Better than life? Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating just a little. But you would have to invest an entire life

in the field to capture some of the intimate moments that Kevin has emblazoned onto the pages of this book. Take a look at page 12. Snowy Egrets, in full bloom and bent like an Egyptian hieroglyphic. Then go to page 15, with a male Purple Martin (maybe America’s favorite bird) frozen in flight. Or a glance at page 30. An adult (faster than a speeding bullet) male Merlin with a back so beautifully lit it rivals the backdrop of sky. Further on to page 63, which deserves more than just a turn of the page. A drop dead gorgeous shot of a bird that makes rainbows envious (and the focal point of a recent PBS “Duckumentary,” their word, not mine) — a male Wooduck. Then there is page 68 with Black Skimmers. In formation. Giving form to a Cape May sky. Why these images? Just chance. Random

Bird Droppings ? From Page 95 flipping of the pages. And the best news is there are 200 more pages for eager fingers to turn and eyes to savor. Many of these pages boast two and three images. There is artistry enough for two, maybe three books housed in this one. It’s all I can do to write this line. All I really want to do is turn pages. Savor the... Chestnut-sided Warbler on page 172! Full page. One of my favorite warblers. An in-your-face look into the eyes of a Northern Saw-whet Owl. You can almost smell the shrew on his breath. “Gray Ghost” on page 137. Wing on. Golden eyes turned your way. My favorite bird. Just birds? Not at all. Birds as elements in a natural tapestry. Birds that are the catalyst that unlock and capture a moment in time and an encounter that now lives forever. But Kevin Karlson is an equal opportunity photographer. The book hosts landscapes. It hosts turtles, ghost crabs, insects, butterflies — especially butterflies. Wait till you see the sequence of an emerging Monarch on page 239. Ahhhh. Worth the price of the book. Wait till you engage the birds housed

The Gray Ghost is just one bird you’ll see beautifully photographed in the pages of Kevin T. Karlson’s Birds of Cape May... in the summer section. Go ahead. Test your birding skills. See if you can pin names to all of the Cape May regulars that enliven our beaches and marshes. How much does a priceless book cost? About $50. In fact, just under $50. A penny less. What should you do with that one penny savings? Use it as a down payment for a second copy. You might intend to buy this book as a holiday gift for out-of-of town friends. But it’s sure to make you want a copy for yourself. Of course the book is available at Cape

May Bird Observatory (where members get a 10% discount). And, if you have people on your list who enjoy nature but who you don’t want to spend quite that much on, there are other options. Just stop over to the Cape May Bird Observatory, THE place for all your nature needs and some pretty cool holiday gifts as well. CMBO, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), is open 6-days a week from 9:30am to 4:30pm (closed on Tuesdays). Ask the staff for help, or just browse around; I’m sure something will catch your eye. There’s jewelry, fleece, jackets, hats, clothing, handpainted decorations, books by local authors, feeders… etc, etc. CMBO also has gift cards available in any denomination. If you can’t make it to Cape May, you’ll just have to let your fingers do the shopping online at BirdCapeMay.org. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.
