Time for the Community to Shine A recent article on PerformanceIN dissected affiliate marketing’s incredible 20year mainstream history. During those early years back in 1995, I dabbled with a number of early affiliate programmes, hacking together websites at home that essentially subsidised my University years and also enabled me to experience many corners of the world while updating those sites via sporadically frequented internet cafés. After returning to the UK a search for others working in affiliate marketing led to a dead end. Declining a job offer from the corporate world of Tesco, I brushed off my rusty coding and design skills to create the first incarnation of affiliates4u, a forum of smart internet professionals, which has since evolved into the PerformanceIN you see today. Affiliates4u was a community of like-minded individuals who helped shape today’s industry. That community was the voice of the industry in its embryonic stage of existence. Often selfregulated, they challenged best practice, adware use, encouraged transparency, confronted networks and shared knowledge and experiences. As performance marketing continues to evolve, one element of affiliate heritage remains the same, one that is possibly unique in Digital Marketing. How do we continue to revolve our business around relationships? Collaboration remains key as an

industry driver, yet many outside of the channel are still struggling to understand its intricacies and heritage. As the current managing director of vouchercloud, I attend events outside of our niche where I am continually shocked at the lack of understanding of our incredible multi-billion Euro industry. This must change, and it is our duty as a community to facilitate this. In 2007 we set out to bring together key influencers at our first ever affiliate marketing conference. These days, although my role at vouchercloud now limits my involvement at the show, Sarah, Chris and the brilliant team at PerformanceIN continue to put together world class conferences that connect and bring together the very best minds in our business from around the Globe. Our industry today is vastly different to that of 20, or even three, years ago. We continue to knock on the door of opportunity, embracing innovative new technologies and solutions where ‘performance’ is embedded often unknowingly into their very core. We all work in an exciting, dynamic and ever-evolving industry. I am proud to be a part of it and urge you to consider how you and your role can continue to shape our growth and encourage the sense of community that helped get us to where we are today.
