Historical Highlights i t ' s stronger h e r e . History is alive in Middleton Learn about the history of Middleton and why it's stronger here. The Middleton community traces its beginnings to an 1832 settlement at what is now Mendota County Park & Campground (see page 8). In 1856, the area was being referred to as Middleton and was officially platted. The village officially became a city in 1963. In 2013, Middleton celebrated 50 years of cityhood. Here are some of Middleton’s most important historic sites and buildings.

Duplex 1720 Aurora Street • See map: F4 Former Union Church, built in 1870 for $1,800 to serve German Methodists and Baptists. Later became American Legion meeting hall. Not open to the public. Former Opera House 1827 Parmenter Street • See map: F4 Once stood at the center of Parmenter Street. Built in 1855 and included hotel, saloon and second-floor opera house, which hosted medicine shows, masquerades, holiday dances, political rallies and graduations. The Gallery 1904 Parmenter Street • See map: F4 Former site of the American Hotel, built between 1867 and 1870. The hotel’s restaurants attracted diners from Madison. Not open to the public.
