Boulder Junction, the Musky Capital of the World®, is nestled within the 250,000-acre Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest. You’ll find 194 lakes within nine miles of downtown Boulder Junction. Woodland trails, hiking trails and water routes are also abundant, and Boulder Junction is centered within the nearly 50-mile Heart of Vilas County paved biking trail. Your adventure begins in Conover! In 1891, early settler Seth Conover started his own hunting club in this beautiful corner of Vilas County. Since then, the community of Conover has been a wilderness escape for hunters, anglers and families. Conover is beautiful and inviting. The area’s untouched forests offer amazing fall color, a dazzling panorama of vibrant hues. In the winter, Conover is home to more than 70 miles of well-groomed and marked snowmobile trails. For many vacationers, the Eagle River chain of 28 lakes is their Northwoods home away from home, a place to fish, boat and relax. Eagle River is also the “Snowmobile Capital of the World,” offering 500 miles of groomed snowmobile trails and hosting the annual World Championship Snowmobile Derby. Presque Isle is known as Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness. Adventure/Dual–Sport Motorcycles – Discover Vilas County’s rich natural beauty on an adventure/dualpurpose motorcycle. They are licensed to ride anywhere it’s legal for a car or truck to travel. Some equate these twisty and rolling trips to motorized hiking. ATVs – Enjoy Vilas County’s growing network of ATV/ UTV routes. Check out a new ATV/UTV route that uses town roads and portions of County Highway A from Phelps to the Forest County line. A second route, which can be accessed off County B in Land O’ Lakes, links Vilas County Highway to ATV trails in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Check vilas.org for route updates. Biking – Exciting woodland trails await you in Vilas County, from challenging single-track courses to beginner mountain biking trails. Paved trails offer touring cyclists a leisurely bike ride through forested areas. Trails run along beautiful lakes, pass through scenic wilderness areas and link friendly communities. Vilas County is truly one of the best places to bike in the state. Birdwatching – The mix of new and mature forests that cover Vilas County provides excellent habitat for woodland birds. Birdwatchers will have a chance to see a number of rare birds, including gray jays, black-backed woodpeckers, ospreys and a variety of warblers. See the map on pages 24-25 for birding hotspots.

Hiking – Vilas County is the perfect place for a walk in the woods. You’ll find rugged trails for experienced hikers as well as many level trails ideal for a relaxing stroll. Golf and Disc Golf Golf – Experience the splendor of the Northwoods with a round of golf. Check out the beautiful 18-hole Eagle River Golf Course.

Disc Golf – Disc golf courses are available at Northland Pines High School in Eagle River and in Lac du Flambeau at the Sandy Point Resort & Disc Golf Ranch.

Equestrian Trail – Horseback riding is available on the Nicolet North Trail in the Chequamegon–Nicolet National Forest.

Let it Snow

WINTER FUN

Winter is wonderful in Vilas County. Go ice fishing on hundreds of lakes. Explore dozens of crosscountry ski and snowshoe trails. Go snowmobiling through snow-covered forests. Warm up in cozy restaurants, resorts and shops. Vilas County is your destination for winter fun.

On the Water When the north wind blows and the mercury falls, the waters of Vilas County begin to freeze. By early December, ice creeps out slowly from the shores. Eventually, ice covers the lakes in a seemingly impenetrable sheet. These frozen lakes do not sleep, but instead become winter playgrounds. Ice Fishing – Anglers take to the lakes in search of northern pike, walleye, yellow perch, crappie and bluegill.

These frozen waters provide some of the best angling of the year. Enormous fish are caught by young and old alike. Jigging and tip-ups are both popular techniques on area lakes. Winter Events – The frozen lakes of Vilas County play a large part in winter activities. These snowy celebrations feature everything from ice fishing tournaments and snowmobile radar runs to “turkey bowling” and pond hockey. Make plans to attend an area winter event—it might just be the most fun you’ve ever had on water.


On Land From the first snowflake to the last melting icicle, there’s no better place to play in the snow. Early snows and consistently cold weather, combined with world-class trail grooming, make Vilas County the perfect place to play during the winter.

Cross-country Skiing – Wherever you are in Vilas County, you’re just minutes from a cross-country ski trail. You’ll find trails for beginner, intermediate and expert skiers. Many trails are level, but some trails provide challenging terrain. Trails range in length from one to 15 miles and are maintained by state and federal governments as well as by dedicated local organizations.

Snowmobiling – Ride over 600 miles of expertly groomed snowmobile trails in Vilas County. The trails connect the 12 communities and link riders to thousands more miles of trails running throughout the Northwoods and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The communities and businesses of Vilas County offer all the snowmobilerelated amenities and services you need for a safe and enjoyable ride.

The lakes of Vilas County are special. Their clarity and beauty are unsurpassed. Public access to Vilas County’s lakes is outstanding, with more than 200 public access landings. Boaters, anglers and paddlers will find a huge range of options. Fishing – Anglers enjoy Vilas County waters for the diversity of fishing opportunities on countless lakes. You can catch everything from crappie, yellow perch and bluegill to hard-fighting walleye, pike and musky. Many streams and several lakes are home to trout.
