I

heard once that there are only two rules to life. Rule number one: “Don’t take anything personally.” Rule number two: “Don’t take anything personally.” These rules help me remember that nothing anyone ever does is because of me. I’m thinking of this today because my friend was in a bad mood after we went out for dinner last weekend. I was sure I had said or done something to upset her, and I decided I was going to apologize to her, even though I wasn’t sure why I needed to! My friend and I usually talk on the phone once a day, or at least communicate by text or Facebook, but for three days, I didn’t hear from her. It bothered me that I couldn’t figure out how I had offended her. Then I remembered the rules. After remembering the rules, literally like 10 minutes later, the phone rang and it was her, asking how I was. She told me she had been exhausted from working harder than usual and just needed some time to herself. “Don’t Take Anything Personally” is the second agreement in Miguel Ruiz’s book “The Four Agreements.” This excerpt explains it well: “As you make a habit of not taking anything personally, you won’t need to place your trust in what others do or say. You will only need to trust yourself to make responsible choices. You are never responsible for the actions of others; you are only responsible for you. When you truly understand this, and refuse to take things personally, you can hardly be hurt by the careless comments or actions of others.” It’s hard for it to soak in, I know, and I’m sure there is an exception to every rule, but it’s something to think about the next time someone upsets you. Whether a coworker bothers you or you even get a “talking to” from your boss, try to remember the rules and I can guarantee you’ll have a better day.

The Top 10 Economic Facts of Diversity in the Workplace

A Diverse Workforce Is Integral to a Strong Economy

O

By Sophia Kerby and Crosby Burns

ur nation and our workforce are both becoming more diverse. The share of people of color in the United States is increasing; more women are entering the labor force; and gay* and transgender individuals are making vital contributions to our economy, while being increasingly open about who they are. To that end, businesses that embrace diversity have a more solid footing in the marketplace than others. A diverse workforce combines workers from different backgrounds and experiences that together breed a more creative, innovative, and productive workforce. And businesses have learned that they can draw upon our nation’s diversity to strengthen their bottom line. In this way, diversity is a key ingredient to growing a strong and inclusive economy that’s built to last.

Let’s look at the top 10 economic benefits of workplace diversity: 1. A diverse workforce drives economic growth.

Our nation’s human capital substantially grows as more women, racial and ethnic minorities, and gay and transgender individuals enter the workforce. A McKinsey & Company study, for example, found that the increase in women’s overall share of labor in the United States—women went from holding 37 percent of all jobs to 47 percent over the past 40 years—has accounted for about a quarter of current GDP.

2. A diverse workforce can capture a greater share of the consumer market.

By bringing together individuals from different backgrounds and experiences, businesses can more effectively market to consumers from different racial and ethnic backgrounds, women, and consumers who are gay or transgender. It is no surprise, then, that studies show diversifying the workplace helps businesses increase their market share. Untitled-1 1

3. R ecruiting from a diverse pool of candidates means a more qualified workforce.

When companies recruit from a diverse set of potential employees, they are more likely to hire the best and the brightest in the labor market. In an increasingly competitive economy where talent is crucial to improving the bottom line, pooling from the largest and most diverse set of candidates is increasingly necessary to succeed in the market.

4. A diverse and inclusive workforce helps businesses avoid employee turnover costs.

Businesses that fail to foster inclusive workplaces see higher turnover rates than businesses that value a diverse workforce because they foster a hostile work environment that forces employees to leave. The failure to retain qualified employees results in avoidable turnover-related costs at the expense of a company’s profits. Having a diverse and discriminationfree work environment helps businesses avoid these costs.

5. D iversity fosters a more creative and innovative workforce.

Bringing together workers with different qualifications, backgrounds, and experiences are all key to effective problem-solving on the job. Similarly, diversity breeds creativity and innovation. Of 321 large global enterprises—companies with at least $500 million in annual revenue— surveyed in a Forbes study in 2011, 85 percent agreed or strongly agreed that diversity is crucial to fostering innovation in the workplace.

Our nation’s entrepreneurs are a diverse set 6. Businesses need to adapt to our changing nation of people of color, women, gay, and transgender to be competitive in the economic market. Census data tell us that by 2050 there will be no racial or ethnic majorindividuals. According to the Census Bureau, ity in our country. Further, between 2000 and 2050 new immigrants and people of color own 22.1 percent of U.S. businesses. their children will account for 83 percent of the growth in the workingage population. Our economy will grow and benefit from these changing Moreover, women own 28.8 percent of U.S. demographics if businesses commit to meeting the needs of diverse combusinesses, and Latina-owned businesses in particular munities as workers and consumers. are the fastest-growing segment of the 7. Diversity is a key aspect of entrepreneurialism. Our nation’s entrepreneurs are a diverse set of people of color, women, women-owned business market. gay, and transgender individuals. According to the Census Bureau, people of color own 22.1 percent of U.S. businesses. Moreover, women own 28.8 percent of U.S. businesses, and Latina-owned businesses in particular are the fastest-growing segment of the women-owned business market. According to the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, gay or transgender individuals own approximately 1.4 million (or approximately 5 percent) of U.S. businesses.

8. D iversity in business ownership, particularly among women of color, is key to moving our economy forward.

The diversity of our nation’s business owners helps boost employment and grow our economy. For example, women of color own 1.9 million firms. These businesses generate $165 billion in revenue annually and employ 1.2 million people. Latina-owned businesses in particular have total receipts of $55.7 billion since 2002.

9. D iversity in the workplace is necessary to create a competitive economy in a globalized world. Kinder Morgan Energy Partners is one of the largest pipeline transportation and energy storage companies in North America. It owns an interest in or operates more than 54,000 miles of pipelines that transport primarily natural gas and petroleum products. The company also operates over 180 terminals that store and handle products like gasoline and coal. For more information, including career opportunities, please visit our website at:

www.kindermorgan.com

Kinder Morgan provides equal employment opportunity to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, marital status, citizenship or status as a covered veteran or any other legally protected status.

As communities continue to grow, it’s important to harness the talent of all Americans. Businesses should continue to capitalize on the growth of women, people of color, and gay and transgender people in the labor force. Our increasing diversity is a great opportunity for the United States to become more competitive in the global economy by capitalizing on the unique talents and contributions that diverse communities bring to the table.

10. Diversity in the boardroom is needed to leverage a company’s full potential.

By 2050 there will be no racial or ethnic majority in the United States, and our nation’s boardrooms need to represent these changing demographics. Currently people of color and women only represent about 14.5 percent and 18 percent, respectively, of corporate boards among the senior management of Fortune 500 companies. Recruiting board directors with a breadth of expertise and varied experiences will make companies more proficient. On Becoming A Teacher Dr. Bob Kizlik

rom my own teaching experience and from discussions and teaching many hundreds of teachers and thousands of teacher education students, there emerge common threads of understanding and skill that good teachers weave into an effective personal style of teaching. Assess your own knowledge and values in terms of your thoughts about the following:

TEACHERS:

Are Good at Explaining Things

Do you like to explain how something works, or how something happened? Being comfortable with explaining content to students is an essential skill for teachers, regardless of the subject or grade level.

Keep Their Cool

There will be times when you will be tempted to scream or yell at your students, other teachers, parents, administrators, and so on. Good teachers Don’t Take Things for Granted are able to successfully resist this urge. Have “Common Sense”

It may sound a bit corny, but good teachers are practical. They can size up a situation quickly and make an appropriate decision. Whether managing a classroom, leading students on a field trip, seamlessly shifting from one instructional procedure to another, assigning detentions, supervising an intern, or dealing with policy and curriculum issues in the school, there is no substitute for common sense.

Have a Command of The Content They Teach

Ohio Valley Educational Cooperative

Set High Expectations for Their Students and Hold The Students To Those Expectations

The Ohio Valley Educational Cooperative (OVEC) with a membership of 13 public school districts is actively seeking certified minority teachers and administrators for elementary, middle and secondary positions. OVEC is located in north central Kentucky and serves the following school districts:

For elementary school teachers, that means having knowledge of a broad range of content in sufficient depth to convey the information in meaningful ways to the students. For secondary school teachers, it usually means having an in-depth command of one or two specific content areas such as mathematics or biology.

If you are thinking about becoming a teacher, you should set high expectations for yourself, and demand excellence not only of yourself, but your students as well.

Are Detail Oriented

If you are a disorganized person in your private life, you will find that teaching will probably be uncomfortable for you. At the very least, teachers must be organized in their professional and teaching duties. If you’re not organized and are not detail oriented, teaching may not be the best choice of a profession for you.

Are Good Managers of Time

Time is one of the most precious resources a teacher has. Good teachers have learned to use this resource wisely.

Can Lead or Follow, as The Situation Demands

Sometimes, teachers must be members of committees, groups, councils, and task forces. Having the temperament to function in these capacities is extremely important. At other times, teachers assume leadership roles. Be sure you are comfortable being a leader or a follower, because sooner or later, you will be called on to function in those roles.

Prevent Procrastination:

Do It Now!

H

September 2013

ow do you prevent procrastination? By doing it NOW, as soon as you remember it and as soon as you reach the item in your to-do list. Do not give yourself any excuse or reason why it has to wait or why it can wait. Once you get started doing, there is no stopping the habit. It takes good self-discipline in order to prevent procrastination. It’s difficult telling yourself to do it now. But this behavior can be habituated just as you get into a habit of procrastinating. You can also habituate yourself into doing this immediately. So how do you start this habit of doing things now? These are the few things you need to learn and remember.

Realize this - there is no yesterday, there is no tomorrow. There is only NOW. And now determines the tomorrow you will have. If you delay doing something, all you will doing is messing up your tomorrow. Things get piled up for tomorrow. By the same token, you are also messing up tomorrow’s yesterday. Remember, there is only now and now is the all important time slot to help you relieve all your stress. Now is the special formula to ease all your tension on your huge to-do list. If you set into motion something now on what needs to be done, slowly but surely the motion gains momentum and tasks will be completed. The idea is to start doing.

2. There Is NO Better Time

It’s all an excuse. I have been there. You start telling yourself, “I will start on Monday; it’s a nice day to start as it’s the start of the week.” Or whatever similar excuses you cook up. There are no perfect dates and no excellent time-slots for things to be done. You have to do it when it comes up. Push once and you will never stop pushing.

3. Once You Do It You Will Be OK, Seriously

You want to prevent procrastination? Here’s my challenge to you. Pick an item that you have been procrastinating for a long time. Start on it now. Once you start, you will realize the freedom that comes with doing something you have delayed. It makes you feel good. You want to repeatedly allow yourself to feel this feeling. Then you will make it a habit to do things quickly as they come up. As you do so you are – it is positive reinforcement at work.

4. Do All It Takes

If at first, you do not succeed to prevent procrastination - write it over and over again. What does that mean? In your to-do list, keep writing it each time you update the list. Do not allow yourself the excuse of dropping it from the list. There are only so many times you can write the item without starting to work on it.

5. Think About The Repercussions

If positive reinforcement doesn’t work on you, and you still refuse to start on something, then try negative reinforcement. Think about all the repercussions it will bring for procrastinating. Nagging? A bad evaluation? Stress from the fact that you will be thinking about it everyday? If you want to prevent procrastination, you have to do it yourself. No one can help you. Just DO it. That is why action is important. Talking, planning, discussing are not actions. They won’t move anything. Only in doing, things get completed. You want to prevent procrastination. Do it NOW, on your own. No one can do it for you. There is power in action and that power can be habituated to stop procrastinating. Article by Yun Siang Long, or Long as he is popularly known. to become publicly traded. Investment bankers connect companies in mergers (when two companies join together) and acquisitions (when one company buys another). Investment bankers provide advice throughout the process to ensure that the transaction goes smoothly. Investment banking sales agents and traders carry out buy-and-sell orders for stocks, bonds, and commodities from clients and make trades on behalf of the firm itself. These workers are primarily employed by investment banks, although some work for commercial banks, hedge funds, and private equity groups. Because markets fluctuate so much, trading is a split-second decision-making process. Slight changes in the price of a trade can greatly affect its profitability, making the trader’s decision extremely important. Floor brokers work directly on the floor—a large room where trading is done—of a securities or commodities exchange. After a trader places an order for a security, floor brokers negotiate the price, make the sale, and forward the purchase price to the trader. Financial services sales agents consult on a wide variety of banking, securities, insurance, and related services to individuals and businesses, often catering the services to meet the client’s financial needs. They contact potential clients to explain their services, which may include checking accounts, loans, certificates of deposit, individual retirement accounts, credit cards, and estate and retirement planning.

Work Environment

Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents held about 312,200 jobs in 2010. The following industries employed the most securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents in 2010: • Securities and commodity contracts intermediation and brokerage: 40% • Depository credit intermediation: 23% • Other financial investment activities: 10% Most securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents work long hours under stressful conditions. The pace of work is fast, and managers are usually demanding of their workers, because both commissions and advancements are tied to sales. Investment bankers travel extensively because they frequently work with companies in other countries. Because computers can conduct trades more quickly than people, electronic trading is quickly replacing verbal auction-style trades on exchange floors. The environment of the stock exchange is changing as a result, with more traders carrying out orders behind a desk and fewer working on the exchange floor. A growing number of securities sales agents, employed mostly by discount or online brokerage firms, work in call-center environments. In these centers, hundreds of agents spend much of the day on the telephone taking orders from clients or offering help and information on their accounts. Most of the major investment banks are located in New York City, making employment in the occupation of securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents concentrated in this metropolitan area. The following metropolitan areas had the highest employment level of securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents in 2010: • New York-White Plains-Wayne, NY-NJ Metropolitan Division: 40,790 • Chicago-Naperville-Joliet, IL Metropolitan Division: 16,830 • Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, TX: 7,970 • Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale, CA Metropolitan Division: 7,920 • Dallas-Plano-Irving, TX Metropolitan Division: 7,430

Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents generally must have a bachelor’s degree to get an entry-level job. Studies in business, finance, accounting, or economics are important, especially for larger firms. Many firms hire summer interns before their last year of college, and those who are most successful are offered full-time jobs after they graduate. Numerous agents eventually get a Master of Business Administration (MBA), which is often a requirement for high-level positions in the securities industry. Because the MBA exposes students to real-world business practices, it can be a major asset for jobseekers. Employers often reward MBA holders with higher-level positions, better compensation, and large signing bonuses.

Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents usually advance to senior positions in a firm by accumulating a greater number of accounts. Although beginners often service the accounts of individual investors, they may eventually service large institutional accounts, such as those of banks and retirement funds. Discover The 5 Most Effective Work Habits for Freshies Starting Out in The Working World

B

eing new in the working world, I am sure you are eager to show off your newfound skills and knowledge. However, out there in the working world some basic work effective habits can increase your productivity. By being consistently effective at your work increases your chances of success in your career. The 5 effective work habits are:

Have a list of things to do according to its strategic importance. When you prioritize your work, you are more productive and that increases your chances of career success.

1. Volunteer For Assignments

One of the best ways to signal that you are a keen learner and are not afraid of hard work is to volunteer for assignments. Especially assignments that no one seems interested to do. However, before that do assess your own skills and knowledge to see if you can confidently accomplish it. If you are confident in completing the task in full and perfection, go ahead and volunteer for it. However, do remember one thing. Under promise and over deliver on the assignment you volunteered. Do not be too confident that you turn a perfect opportunity into mess. Once you start the project, see it till the end. You would be seen as someone who is courageous enough to take on additional assignments. You would also be seen as someone who follows through in your work. This is the first habit you need to internalize.

2. Be Nice To People

I am sure we have all heard this often enough. Be nice to people regardless of their rank and designation. It sounds philosophical but when you are nice to people they go out of their way to help you. And being new in an organization you would never know what sort of help you would need. Colleagues often like to work with nice talented people. When you have this effective work habit you increase the chances of people wanting you to work on their team. Being nice to people is just common courtesy. There is nothing extra ordinary about this particular habit that you need special skills. A smile in the morning and a “Good Morning” is a good start. In this day and age, people working in pressurized environments often use stress as an excuse when they blow up. Is this necessary? Nice is often reciprocated by nice. In fact, it can lower your stress level.

For over 40 years, Harris Ranch Beef Company, the processing and marketing component of the beef division, has continually strived to produce the highest quality beef in the world.

3. Prioritize Your Work

We all love to start work on things that are close to our hearts. However, often these may not be the most urgent and important in our list of tasks in the workplace. When you select things you are more interested in rather than work that is more important or urgent, you lower your chances of success. Have a list of things to do according to its strategic importance to your company. Know your role in completing the tasks at hand in order to achieve that corporate goal. When you prioritize your work, you are more productive and that increases your chances of career success.

4. Stay Positive

As someone new in the working world it is very easy to feel down because you are new. You are not used to the work system. You have new people to deal with and people in the working world who behave very differently from school. It takes a lot of getting used to. There will be office politics to deal with regardless of how little. Be above all these and stay positive in the face of challenges. When you are positive you remain focused on your goals. You make better decisions and therefore become more productive.

5. H ighlight A Problem But Bring Solutions

The last effective work habit of the five effective work habits is to bring solutions each time you highlight a problem to your boss or management. You need to remember that when you bring problems and not solutions, it is often construed as complaining. To avoid that label, offer solutions. A range of possible solutions also indicates to your boss that you have thought this through before approaching him/her with a problem. Have in mind a recommended solution amongst those you suggested. These are the 5 effective work habits I constantly drill into new employees who are fresh graduates in our company. At first glance, these may seem like common sense. However, in actual working environment people tend to sometimes forget these very basic effective work habits. And don’t practice them often enough. Internalize these and consistently practice them to increase your chances of success. Companies Looking to Hire Vets Must Overcome Obstacles, Stereotypes The Center for a New American Security recently released a report on employing America’s veterans, and the overarching theme of the study will come as no surprise to most in the defense industry—hiring veterans is simply good business.

A

high rate of veteran unemployment continues to be a nationwide concern, pulling together both national security and economic advocates. With veteran employment above the nation average, at 12.1 percent for post 2001-era veterans, and more service members being required to leave the military thanks to troop drawdowns, it’s a topic that will only increase in importance over the next several years. The Center for a New American Security recently released a report on employing America’s veterans, and the overarching theme of the study will come as no surprise to most in the defense industry – hiring veterans is simply good business. More than 87 individuals representing 69 companies were interviewed for the study, and took the approach of getting to the heart of why companies hire veterans and why, in some cases, they don’t. The reality is that as great as veterans are and as attractive as their skillsets, with continuingly high unemployment numbers there must be some obstacles employers are encountering when it comes to actually making the hire. At the end of the day, veterans will rarely get a job simply because they’re vets (which comes as good news for most service members, who aren’t expecting a hand-out when they leave the military). Translating military skills into the civilian sector is a key issue for employers looking to hire vets, the CNAS study noted. Negative stereotypes concerning post-traumatic stress or inability to acclimate back to the civilian workforce were also cited as concerns. As was simply finding veterans, thanks to the plethora of veteran hiring organizations and government initiatives (you’ll want to note that 75 percent of ClearanceJobs users are veterans, so we’re a good place to start). Some view veterans as perhaps not having as much experience as their civilian counterparts, although study author and senior fellow at CNAS Dr. Margaret C. Harrell disagreed: “I would challenge the perception that service members come back from the service without marketable skills,” said Harrell before an audience at CNAS’ annual conference at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel in downtown Washington, D.C. “They worked in a team environment, kept people safe, were responsible for expensive equipment. There are a lot of things a young vet brings to the table. A 22-year old vet should complete fairly well with a civilian of the same age. Right now they’re just not able to articulate it well.” Despite the challenges, almost two-thirds of the employees in the CNAS sample actively looked to hire veterans. All agreed that they would select the most qualified candidate but as one respondent noted, “the tie goes to the vet.” When it comes to where employers find vets to hire, they listed base visits and transition assistance programs, military career fairs, partnerships, and employment websites. While stereotyping can have a negative impact on service members, it has a definite upside. The qualities employers and hiring managers have come to expect from veterans, and those that make them a valuable employee, include character, discipline, resiliency, loyalty, and effectiveness. It would seem employers come to expect certain qualities from veterans that help them to stand out from the rest of the applicant pool. It’s these qualities that likely make a veteran hire the “good business” option. They’re a key reason why many companies will continue to make veteran hiring a priority, although more needs to be done to streamline veteran hiring resources to make it less confusing for companies, as well as helping service members translate and transfer their military skills into the civilian world. 7 Keys To Job Hunting Success

W

hile there are signs that the job market may be improving in the U.S., it is still very competitive with many highly qualified candidates vying for the same few open positions. Still, even with the increased competition there are ways that the motivated job seeker can stand out from the masses and ensure that she wins the attention of recruiters, get calls for job interviews, and ultimately lands in positions that are personally, professionally, and financially rewarding. How? Here are seven tips to help you to conduct a successful job search and put yourself on the path to career success. Tip #1: Clearly specify who you are and what you’ve got to offer. Even if it’s a little uncomfortable, remember that you are marketing yourself. Your job as a job hunter is to “sell” yourself as the ideal candidate for a job opening. What is your unique value proposition? What are the benefits you bring to the table of the employer? You need to be very clear about this and be able to speak atriculately and comfortably when somebody asks you “what do you do” or “tell me more about you.” Tip #2: Be single-minded about your goal and go after it. Without clear goals your job search can be neither efficient or effective. If you’re not certain about your career goals, spend time now to think about this and define them before you launch your search.

At Sysco, our mission is to market and deliver great products to our customers with exceptional service. Once you know what it is you want to achieve you can determine what you can bring to the table in relation to that goal and this will give you confidence that simply won’t be matched by most of your competitors. Tip #3: Yes, baseline qualifications for a position are important. But most of your competitors will have those as well. To stand out you need to understand and promote what makes you different and unique from your peers. What is it that you do especially well? What do your co-workers or bosses repeatedly rely on you for? What are your major achievements over the years? Is there a common thread that runs through them? The key here is to differentiate yourself from all the others. Tip #4: Diversify your job search and use multiple job search techniques. Answering advertisements is not enough by itself, neither is working with headhunters exclusively, or going through a process of researching and targeting specific companies. Combining all these approaches with Internet job searches, networking, and other techniques will help you achieve success far more quickly. Tip #5: Your first impression must be your best one. Like it or not, your resume is that first introduction and you must use it to best effect. Your resume must be a very highly focused marketing document that is written strategically to sell you as the best solution to an employers’ needs. You can not cut corners with your resume. To do so could cost you months and months of extra time in the job market, lost income, and missed opportunities. It is well worth the investment to work with a professional resume writer to ensure your resume is effective and competitive. Tip #6: Network as much as you can. Talk to everyone and nurture relationships. Make sure that everyone you know is aware that you are job searching. Never ask people in your network for jobs. Instead, ask them for introductions to other people they know and continuously expand your network. It has been said that 80% or more jobs are “unpublished.” These are effectively jobs that are landed through referrals or word-of-mouth, rather than through posting resumes to databases, answering advertisements or other techniques. Networking will provide you access to these jobs. Tip #7: Make sure that you follow up. Don’t underestimate the importance of a handwritten thank you note, or a formal thank you letter sent to a networking contact, or after attending a job interview. If you say you will call, do it. If you sent your resume in response to an opening, call to ensure it has been received. Few people do this and it will give you a competitive advantage. Follow up! While it may at first seem there are no jobs out there, there are. Following these tips will help you make the most of them. Finally, remember that failure is not an option. You must not give up. This requires persistence and consistency. But the more effort you put in the more potential leads you will get and eventually the more job offers you will get.

Are You Super Competent?

Performing at Your Productive Best SUPERCOMPETENT KEY 1: ACTIVITY

SuperCompetent people have an acute sense of direction, in which the nature of their Activity reflects priority. They’re particularly aware of one thing that escapes most of their colleagues: that being busy and being productive are two very different things. Activity demonstrates value and reflects importance. You can be busy all day long, running from one brushfire to another, and not accomplish anything productive at all. True Activity involves knowing your goals intimately, keeping them constantly in mind, and working toward them in an efficient way that wastes a minimum of energy and time. SuperCompetent people aren’t hidebound by the old ways of doing things, either; if there’s a possibility of doing something more efficiently, they suggest or implement it. They make every effort to avoid getting mired in the trap of Schlimmbesserung, in which new processes and technologies intended to make work easier end up making you work longer and harder than before. Here are a few ways to help you fine-tune your workday in the Key of Activity, keeping things humming along like a well-oiled productivity machine. 1. Know exactly why you work hard and what you’re trying to achieve. You can’t be very productive if you don’t know what you’re working for. Plan out your goals and dreams, and work toward achieving them. Learn what makes you tick, own your destiny, and keep focused on your mission. 2. Know what to do, when to do it, and why. Take initiative and do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. Don’t just work on projects in the order they come across your desk; learn to structure your time and processes effectively, or others will out-compete you. 3. Create systems to perform tasks more efficiently, so you can leave the office on time. Too often, we’re gulled into working harder than we should by stuff that was supposed to make our lives easier. Step forward and create or suggest more efficient ways of doing things, so that you can take back your time. 4. Regularly rest and recharge your batteries, so that you can be productive and creative when you return to work. For heaven’s sake, you’re not a robot. Take a break when you need to! As long as you don’t become a slacker, taking time off can be one of the healthiest, most productive things you can do. 5. Do the day’s most profitable and valuable tasks first. Instead of taking care of piddling brushfire issues, learn to delegate. Put the most important tasks at the top of your list, and work through them first—then do all the rest, if you have time. It’s not a sin to let unimportant tasks go. At the end of the day, all that matters is results—and results are measured by productivity. That means you need to be very sure that your time is not only accounted for, but has real value. Productivity, in its most meaningful sense, is all about reaching high-value goals in every area of your life, often in the shortest amount of time (but not always, such as spending time with loved ones). Nobody cares how many things you crossed off your list. Nobody cares how busy you were last week if key projects are falling through the cracks. Only results matter, so strive to get the most value out of every day. Grab your dreams and get going!

SuperCompetent people are particularly aware of one thing that escapes most of their colleagues: that being busy and being productive are two very different things. Ranked a “Best Firm To Work For” by Structural Engineer magazine!

SUPERCOMPETENT KEY 2: AVAILABILITY

Just as setting valid priorities and goals is important, so is accepting your responsibility in carrying them out. You have to structure your schedule very carefully to ensure that things get done—because if you don’t, other people will be perfectly happy to structure your schedule for you.

Availability is driven by Activity. Just as setting valid priorities and goals is important, so is accepting your responsibility in carrying them out. You have to structure your schedule very carefully to ensure that things get done—because if you don’t, other people will be perfectly happy to structure your schedule for you. Think about it: how many times have you attended a meeting and asked yourself, “Why am I here?” Often, it’s because someone decided you should be—without bothering to consider if that was best for you and your productivity goals. You have to be willing to protect your time from everyone who wants a piece of it. Among other things, you must learn to say no when appropriate, to delegate, to cancel unnecessary meetings, to let some tasks go, and to eliminate bottlenecks—whatever’s necessary to take back your time and use it the way you need to. More importantly, you must learn how to leverage technological productivity tools that can lighten your scheduling load. Webinars, teleconferencing, and services like Jott or GoToMeeting can accelerate productivity and streamline your schedule. So can the effective use of organizers and other paper-based methods. The trick is finding which one works best for you, and that takes some experimentation. Try these tips to hone your Availability toward SuperCompetence: 1. Refuse requests when appropriate. Learn how to say no graciously. Because you’re good at what you do, you’ll always be fielding requests for help and input. It’s human nature to want to please others, but you can’t do it all. There’s no need to be rude, but there are polite ways to avoid being overworked. 2. Set appropriate boundaries. Learn how to protect your time from others. You’re always going to face what I call the six D’s of Interruptions: Deadlines, Disruptions, Dependencies, Discrepancies, Distractions, and Drop-Ins. You can’t let others use any of these to slow down your productivity. 3. Push a task down to the lowest level of responsibility. Trust others to do their jobs; “delegation” is a popular business buzzword for a reason. Don’t waste your time and productivity on tasks other people can do more cheaply. Hand them off to someone else, and let them do their jobs without micromanagement 4. Schedule your day realistically according to your key activities. While it’s normal to make an effort to accommodate other people’s needs, your own should come first. Learn to manage your time properly, and take control of your own schedule. Don’t let other people do it for you. 5. Weigh the results of attending any meeting against the results you could produce instead. Meetings can take up your entire day if you let them. Instead of dropping everything to attend a meeting, see if you can send a proxy, attend by phone, or just cancel it altogether. Availability is a loaded word, at least in business terms. It means so much more than just being there—any decent worker can and should be there for their employers, subordinates, and co-workers when they’re needed. SuperCompetent people, on the other hand, need to be keenly aware of time management. After all, time isn’t like money, office supplies, or Brussel sprouts: we’ve each got a very limited amount of it, and we’re not going to get any more. You can’t give everyone who wants it a sliver of your time; therefore, you must fully commit to making the changes necessary to take control of your life. Stand up, step up, and take back your time!

SUPERCOMPETENT KEY 3: ATTITUDE

Attitude is your motivation, drive, and proactiveness. The most effective people in any endeavor are those with a hard-working, positive, can-do attitude. Their attitudes exude the kind of passion that commits fully to a course of action and sees it all the way through. It’s infectious, and it keeps them and others in their team moving forward, even when the way becomes difficult. In order to succeed in a competitive work environment, you have to be a self-starter, consistently driven, consistently flexible, and consistently innovative. You must also learn to be a good communicator in all directions: up to your customers and superiors, laterally to your coworkers, and down to your subordinates. On top of all that, you have to be willing to accommodate different personalities, points of view, and the various vagaries of emotion and circumstance that affect other people’s behavior on a daily basis. Having trouble honing your Attitude to a SuperCompetent level? Keep these five tips in mind: 1. Keep an eye on your stress level. It’s a mistake to ignore your emotional health. Negative emotions, stress, worry, and your temper can all conspire to bring you down—especially if you don’t take the occasional break to recharge your batteries. Don’t let them cause you to boil over and impair your productivity. 2. Even when a task is monumental, keep working at it until you whittle it down to size. Most tasks can be broken down into manageable subtasks. Don’t look at that mountain of work and just give up. Dive in, find an efficient way to do what needs to be done, and move that mountain. 3. Don’t be afraid to unleash your creativity and apply it to problems at work. If you try, you just may discover a new, simpler way of doing things. Without creativity there is no progress, no change, no experimentation, no innovation. Creativity, properly used, opens up new worlds of possibility and profit. 4. Learn to communicate clearly. People can’t read your mind. Clean communication is necessary in all directions in order to avoid misunderstandings and mistakes. Learn to deal with difficult personalities, emphasize teamwork, and play nice—even when others don’t seem willing to do so. 5. Look for a silver lining in every situation. Do your best to be positive at all times. Wherever it’s possible, try to reframe challenges and problems as opportunities. Sure, maybe it’s not what you were looking for, but some of the world’s most spectacular successes started as spectacular failures. Your attitude is your state of mind, the way you perceive the world about you. So be upbeat; be positive; and always have a can-do attitude about work and what you can accomplish there. A particular task may seem outrageously difficult, and it may seem impossible for anything human to accomplish it, but here’s one thing that’s certain: if you don’t try, you’ll definitely never get it done. 6. On the other hand, if you jump right in, show your willingness to be part of a team and to make the proper effort to accomplish whatever needs to be done, you’ll become insanely productive. Do this right, and you’ll end up so far ahead you’ll wonder when you passed the finish line. © 2010 Laura Stack. Stress Management Techniques: The Top 5 To Cultivate to Succeed at Work

T

he techniques described here take time to cultivate, but is well worth your effort. The ultimate objective being to develop a habit of these techniques— so that it becomes second nature to you. As a career builder newbie, I urge you to start developing some of these techniques in order to manage the stress you will experience as you climb the corporate ladder.

SMT #1: Greet People Warmly

Greeting people warmly especially in the morning is important to manage stress. You wonder why? Have you ever noticed how some people come in the office grumpy? It is almost as if, they have decided that they will be stressed out that day. When you greet someone warmly in the morning, it says you have decided that you will start a great day. Imagine starting a day on the low and watch it get worse!

SECURING THE FUTURE

SECURING AMERICA'S WAR FIGHTER F0R 50 YEARS

SMT #2: B e Conscious

Being conscious of your behavior means to be conscious of how you feel and act. It is the trigger in your mind that says “I am getting impatient with this discussion. And I am going to raise my voice.” Once you are mindful of your actions you can choose to react in a more positive fashion. Now, you may ask – how can I be conscious of my actions if I am in the middle of an argument with someone? Well, it takes practice. Just as we practice a certain sport prior to an important tournament.

SMT #3: B e Conscious of Our Breath

Taking deep breaths and counting is a popular stress management technique. In this particular one, my variation is to be conscious of my breath. Whenever I feel stressed, I excuse myself if I am in the company of others and walk away. While walking away to the washroom for example, I concentrate on my breath touching the tip of my upper lip. And I consciously slow my breath down while concentrating on it. It takes the negative thoughts out of my mind.

SMT #4: Reviewing The Positive

Create a habit of reviewing the positive that has happened throughout the day. The idea is to cultivate the habit of looking at the positive. Instead of crashing in front of the television when you reach home, spend five to ten minutes reviewing what nice things others have done for you. The kind deed others have done that made your day turn out great. I practice this while being stuck in traffic. It kills two birds with one stone, it allows me to review the positive and takes my mind off the traffic situation at the same time.

SMT #5: L etting Go of The Negative

Let’s face it - we are but mere mortals. We will make mistakes while trying to cultivate these habits to manage stress. In reviewing the positives, we should also be conscious of the negative that we have done. Maybe we did not realize it earlier in the day. It could be something nasty we have said to someone. Realize this and “cleanse” yourself by flushing away the misdirected actions. Do this by forgiving yourself and remind yourself that you will not do it again. Admittedly, these 5 stress management techniques take time to cultivate. Make a decision to start today and watch your stress greatly reduced as time goes by. Radioactive drugs, known as radiopharmaceuticals, give off radiation, allowing special scanners to monitor tissue and organ functions. Abnormal areas show higher-than-expected or lower-than-expected concentrations of radioactivity. Physicians then interpret the images to help diagnose the patient’s condition. For example, tumors can be seen in organs during a scan because of their concentration of the radioactive drugs.

kept on how much radiation they get over their lifetime. When preparing radioactive drugs, technologists use safety standards to keep the chance of radiation exposure low for patients, other healthcare workers, and themselves. Like other healthcare workers, nuclear medicine technologists may be exposed to infectious diseases.

Work Schedules

Because imaging is sometimes needed in emergencies, some nuclear medicine technologists work evenings, weekends, or on call.

How to Become a Nuclear Medicine Technologist

Nuclear medicine technologists typically need an associate’s degree in nuclear medicine technology. Formal education programs in nuclear medicine technology or a related healthcare field lead to a certificate, an associate’s degree, or a bachelor’s degree. Technologists must be licensed in some states; requirements vary by state.

Education

Nuclear medicine technologists typically need an associate’s degree in nuclear medicine technology; there are also bachelor’s degree programs. Some technologists become qualified by completing an associate’s or a bachelor’s degree program in a related health field, such as radiologic technology or nursing, and then completing a 12-month certificate program in nuclear medicine technology. Generally, certificate programs are offered in hospitals; associate’s degrees in community colleges, and bachelor’s degrees in 4-year colleges and universities. Nuclear medicine technology programs include clinical experience— practice under the supervision of a certified nuclear medicine technologist and a physician who specializes in nuclear medicine. In addition, these programs often include courses in human anatomy and physiology, physics, chemistry, radioactive drugs, and computer science.

Licenses and Certification

Nuclear medicine technologists must be licensed in some states; requirements vary by state. For specifics, contact your state’s health board. Some nuclear medicine technologists get certification. Although certification is not required for a license, it fulfills most of the requirements for state licensure on its own.

Nuclear medicine technologists work with multiple computers and large pieces of technological equipment and must be comfortable operating them. Without certification, most states require testing and have other requirements to get a license. Some employers require national certification, regardless of state regulations. Certification usually involves completing required coursework and having the necessary hours of clinical experience, as well as graduating from an accredited nuclear medicine technology program. Certified nuclear medicine technologists must also take continuing education to keep their certification. Frequent innovations and technology changes in the field of nuclear medicine make continuing education necessary. In addition to receiving general certification, technologists can get specialty certifications that show their proficiency in specific procedures or on certain equipment. A technologist can earn a certification in

PET uses a machine that creates a three-dimensional image of a part of the body, such as the brain. NCT uses radioactive drugs to obtain images of the heart. Patients exercise during the imaging while the technologist creates images of the heart and blood flow. MRI uses a magnetic field to create images of an area of the body. CT uses computers to show the layers of x-ray images taken of a patient in a three-dimensional view. Each field requires the technologist to have a high level of knowledge about the specific procedures and technologies involved. The Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) offers NCT and PET certification exams. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) offers the CT and MRI certification exams.

Job Outlook

Employment of nuclear medicine technologists is expected to grow by 19 percent from 2010 to 2020, about as fast as the average for all occupations. However, because it is a small occupation, the growth will result in only about 4,100 new jobs over the 10-year period. Nuclear medicine technologists work mostly with adult patients, although procedures may be performed on children. A larger aging population should lead to the need to diagnose and treat medical conditions that require imaging, such as heart disease. Nuclear medicine technologists will be needed to administer radioactive drugs and maintain the imaging equipment required for diagnosis. Overall employment growth is expected to be driven by rapidly growing industries, including physicians’ offices and diagnostic laboratories, which employed about 31 percent of nuclear medicine technologists in 2010.

There are writers like these in the world (although not many) and the reason that their books, articles and sales letters put you into a “reading trance” is because they are powerful and persuasive writers. Once you’ve researched and absorbed as much information as you can, then AND ONLY THEN is it time to start writing, because you can’t write persuasively about a subject you don’t fully understand.

3. Use the “Free Writing” technique to write

This means writing from your subconscious rather than your conscious mind. The reason for this is because your conscious mind always has your internal editor attached to it. Your internal editor is the little chatter box inside your head who criticizes everything you write. As you write he says things like, “That’s not very good writing.” “Your punctuation is all wrong.” “No one will want to read that garbage.” “You are a terrible writer.” Now imagine that instead of being in your head, your internal editor is an actual person standing behind you, looking over your shoulder and criticizing your writing out loud. 1. Copy the greats. Would you be able to write if someone Find an extract from a book or a sales let- was doing that? Of course not. September 2013 so you can’t see what you’re writing. This will help you to keep going forwards instead of reading back over what you’ve already written. Don’t worry if you think you’re going wrong or you think your writing things in the wrong order. Just keep writing. And NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES try and edit as you go along. Writing and editing are two totally separate jobs and should never be done together. If you think you’ve made a mistake, ignore it. You’ll pick it up later when you edit your work. The famous horror writer, Stephen King, calls this a “writing trance”. You just forget about everything around you and keep writing - no matter what - until you get to the end. Once you’ve finished all your writing and taken a break away from it for a few hours (or a few days), THEN it’s time to edit it, because you can now see your writing with “fresh” eyes. And you’ll be surprised at how good it actually is.

4. Use Bart Simpson as an Editor

In order for your writing to be powerful and persuasive, you have to convince your readers to see things your way. For instance, if you are writing a sales letter to try and get people to by a particular product, you have to convince them that they need it. You can do this two ways. You can persuade them by describing how bad their life/business is without this product. Or you can persuade them by describing the benefits of owning this product and how much better this will make their life business. Or you can use both ways. But first you have to keep their attention so

equal opportunity employment journal that they’ll keep reading long enough to see everything you are trying to tell them. A simple way of doing this is by keeping Bart Simpson in your head. Young Bart is wellknown for being completely disinterested in anything that isn’t of personal benefit to him. So with every sentence you write imagine Bart

Writing and editing are two totally separate jobs and should never be done together. If you think you’ve made a mistake, ignore it. You’ll pick it up later when you edit your work. Simpson reading it and asking “So What?” “Who Cares?” “What’s In It For Me?” These are the exact questions your readers will be thinking, although probably more politely. So give reasons in every sentence as to why you’re making the statements that you are. Use words such as because, and, or. These will help you to give more explanations. So instead of writing something like “Follow these 6 steps and you can become a powerful and persuasive copywriter” you can think about the Bart Simpson questions, “So what? Who cares? What’s in it for me?”

Page 31

Then you can change the sentence to “Follow these 6 steps to becoming a powerful and persuasive copywriter and earn a 6-figure income working from anywhere in the world!” Now doesn’t that sound more tempting? Remember, people won’t buy or do something if it doesn’t benefit them in some way. So keep in mind that, like Bart, they ALWAYS want to know what’s in it for them.

5. D on’t suggest things, COMMAND them.

The most powerful and persuasive writers never make suggestions to their readers - they use COMMANDS. They make bold statements that leave no room for compromise such as: “Don’t settle for second best” “Not to be missed” “Don’t delay. Buy it today” This is because once your readers are in a trace-like state while they are reading your sales letter or article, their minds become more open to persuasion. For the same reason, when a hypnotist is trying to put someone into a hypnotic state, they don’t say “Are you getting sleepy yet?” They command their subject to go to sleep by saying “You are getting sleepy.” Now I know you don’t want to hypnotize your readers, but you do want to influence their decisions, so use direct commands: “You don’t want to miss this” “This is the only product you need” “This is what you’ve been looking for”

Once someone becomes absorbed in reading your article or sales letter, the one thing that can break the trance is by their questions not being answered. Questions will come to their minds with every sentence they read. Your job as a persuasive copywriter is to anticipate these questions and answer them immediately. So don’t just say “This is a brand new product” because this will prompt a Bart Simpson question-“So what?” You need to anticipate the question and say “This is a brand new product that will turbo-charge your writing.” And remember that the most important part of your writing that needs to be interesting is the heading. The heading has to be not only interesting but INTRIGUING. It has to entice those who read it to want to read more. For instance, the heading of this article begins with the words “6 Steps”. This

intrigues people enough to want to know what the “6 Steps” are. It immediately puts a question into their minds: “What are the 6 Steps?” And if you want proof that this works, well, you’re reading this article aren’t you? So you must have been intrigued enough by the heading to want to find out what the “6 Steps” were. And the fact that you kept reading to the end also shows that the writing was persuasive enough to make you want to keep reading. So now it’s your turn. Go and copy the greats - your role models. Then research, absorb and write without editing. Don’t suggest, COMMAND! And remember Bart Simpson. All this will keep your readers in a “reading trance”. And when most of them follow your instructions, you’ll know that you’re a powerful and persuasive writer.

A Career As An Ornithologist

W

hen ornithologist Amanda Rodewald talks about tweets and angry birds, she’s not usually referring to social media and video games. She’s probably discussing science. “Birds have calls that they use when they’re agitated or to alarm others of danger,” says Amanda. “In fact, there’s been research showing that chickadee calls can actually communicate the size and type of a predator.” Ornithology is the branch of zoology related to birds. Some ornithologists study birds to find clues about how to protect the environment. For example, Amanda’s research focuses on the ways that human activity affects birds and their ecosystems, and her findings are useful for conservation and land management efforts.

What They Do

Ornithologists work in academia, federal and state agencies, wildlife and conservation organizations, and other institutions, such as the World Bank. They study birds in their natural habitats or in the laboratory. They also may write research reports and proposals for grants, teach classes, present research to the public, and have administrative duties related to these activities. Some ornithologists, like Amanda, do all these tasks. Research and writing. Many questions about ornithology are best answered by observing birds in the wild during fieldwork. Amanda and her students have done fieldwork in locations as remote as the Andes Mountains in South America and as nearby as the forests of southern Ohio and the Midwest.

Fieldwork usually involves surveying, or counting birds and monitoring their nests. “Fieldwork is where many ornithologists learn how to collect data for research.” Fieldwork usually involves surveying, or counting, birds and monitoring their nests. “Fieldwork is where many ornithologists learn how to collect data for research,” says Amanda. “For example, we’ll watch and record different species foraging to discover where and what they eat.” During fieldwork, ornithologists might also attach metal or plastic bands to a bird’s leg to help identify individual birds and aid with survival estimates.

Outreach activities might include giving talks and making presentations to natural resources managers of government and other nonprofit organizations as well as to people in public interest groups, birdwatching clubs, and schools.

But not all ornithologists work outdoors. Much of the research that ornithologists do is in the lab. For example, feathers collected during fieldwork are analyzed in the lab for a variety of purposes, including genetic mapping. And some studies of migratory behavior or mate choice might involve observing birds in special cages. Ornithologists often write reports about their research or publish articles in scientific journals focused on biology, ecology, conservation, or wildlife management. And ornithologists who do research also write grant proposals to seek funding for specific research. Teaching and outreach In addition to educating people through writing about birds, ornithologists share their knowledge by teaching college courses. For

Administration

An ornithologist’s administrative tasks vary, depending on the job. Most of Amanda’s administrative duties are related to her work as director of conservation science at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, New York. Her responsibilities include program oversight and supervision, budgeting, and strategic planning.

How They Prepare

Ornithologists need an advanced degree for most jobs. But at every level of ornithology work, says Amanda, academic credentials alone aren’t enough. “Education is important,” she says, “but practical experience in the field or lab is critical.” Education Ornithologists may start out with a bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, ecology, or some other life science.

Students also benefit from coursework in math and statistics, for deciphering the quantitative side of science; communications, to gain writing and speaking skills; and social science, for understanding how human behavior affects ecosystems. For most professional jobs, Amanda says, ornithologists need a master’s degree that includes a research thesis. Those who want to develop their own research projects, work in high-level management positions, or teach at a university usually need a Ph.D. in a discipline related to their work. Amanda’s degrees are in wildlife biology (bachelor’s), zoology (master’s) and ecology (Ph.D.). Experience Aspiring ornithologists can begin getting experience as early as high school by contacting local birdwatching clubs, becoming active in networks for young birdwatchers, and attending workshops to learn the basics of fieldwork. College students interested in ornithology should check job boards to find temporary positions; search online for internships, some of which may be paid; and volunteer on projects with ornithology, ecology, or wildlife organizations. The important thing, says Amanda, is to “get outside and get experience.”

What It’s Like

Getting outside is what first drew Amanda to ornithology. “I loved the outdoors and always had a curiosity about wildlife and ecology,” she says. Rewards and Challenges Fieldwork allows ornithologists to combine

their passions for studying nature and being outdoors. But that also means being out in all types of weather—sometimes, almost every day— if there are limited times during a season to observe a particular species. Also, there is travel to and from field locations and a variable work schedule that is far from standard. But because ornithologists love what they do, says Amanda, they don’t mind the unpredictable climate and hours. “So often when working outside in these beautiful field locations, surrounded by such fascinating birds, I can’t believe that I am actually paid to do this,” she says. Erratic financial support is a different story. “There’s a lot of uncertainty about funding, both for research and for education,” Amanda says. “That’s the worst part of the job.” Employment and wages. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not collect employment and wage data specifically on ornithologists. Instead, ornithologists are included among zoologists and wildlife biologists. In May 2012, BLS counted 18,650 zoologists and wildlife biologists; their median annual wage was $57,710. The American Ornithologists’ Union, citing data from the Ornithological Societies of North America, estimates that there are about 6,000 ornithologists employed in the United States. But it’s difficult to determine wages or a precise employment number, the organizations say, because of the overlap among scientists in related disciplines (such as ornithologists who also study mammals or forestry).

Page 35

For ornithologist Amanda Rodewald, fieldwork often includes capturing birds to band them. Passion Many bird enthusiasts throughout the United States enjoy learning more about these creatures. Employment estimates don’t count the large and growing segment of citizen scientists in ornithology: trained hobbyists, students, and volunteers who collect real data for science because of their interest in birds. “This is one area where amateurs can be exceptionally important,” Amanda says. Whether employed as ornithologists or doing fieldwork as citizen scientists, these nature enthusiasts share the same passion. “Our work is meaningful,” says Amanda. “We’re helping to conserve the world around us.” Article provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Renowned for the quality of our services by being recognized with various industry, association, and national awards, Christiana Care Health System (CCHS) is committed to being a premier health provider by advancing medical treatment in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Effective communication helps us better understand a person or situation and enables us to resolve differences, build trust and respect, and create environments where creative ideas, problem solving, affection, and caring can flourish. As simple as communication seems, much of what we try to communicate to others—and what others try to communicate to us—gets misunderstood, which can cause conflict and frustration in personal and professional relationships. By learning these effective communication skills, you can better connect with your spouse, kids, friends, and coworkers. In the information age, we have to send, receive, and process huge numbers of messages every day. But effective communication is about more than just exchanging information; it’s also about understanding the emotion behind the information. Effective communication can improve relationships at home, work, and in social

situations by deepening your connections to others and improving teamwork, decision-making, and problem solving. It enables you to communicate even negative or difficult messages without creating conflict or destroying trust. Effective communication combines a set of skills including nonverbal communication, attentive listening, the ability to manage stress in the moment, and the capacity to recognize and understand your own emotions and those of the person you’re communicating with. While effective communication is a learned skill, it is more effective when it’s spontaneous rather than formulaic. A speech that is read, for example, rarely has the same impact as a speech that’s delivered (or appears to be delivered) spontaneously. Of course, it takes time and effort to develop these skills and become an effective communicator. The more effort and practice you put in, the more instinctive and spontaneous your communication skills will become.

Effective communication skills #1: Listening

Listening is one of the most important aspects of effective communication. Successful listening means not just understanding the words or the information being communicated, but also understanding how the speaker feels about what they’re communicating. Effective listening can: Make the speaker feel heard and understood, which can help build a stronger, deeper connection between you. Create an environment where everyone feels safe to express ideas, opinions, and feelings, or plan and problem solve in creative ways. Save time by helping clarify information, avoid conflicts and misunderstandings. Relieve negative emotions. When emotions are running high, if the speaker feels that he or she has been truly heard, it can help to calm them down, relieve negative feelings, and allow for real understanding or problem solving to begin.

Effective communication skills #2: Nonverbal communication

When we communicate things that we care about, we do so mainly using nonverbal signals. Wordless communication, or body language, includes facial expressions, body movement and gestures, eye contact, posture, the tone of your voice, and even your muscle tension and breathing. The way you look, listen, move, and react to another person tells them more about how you’re feeling than words alone ever can. Developing the ability to understand and use nonverbal communication can help you connect with others, express what you really mean, navigate challenging situations, and build better relationships at home and work. You can enhance effective communication by using open body language—arms uncrossed, standing with an open stance or sitting on the edge of your seat, and maintaining eye contact with the person you’re talking to. You can also use body language to emphasize or enhance your verbal message—patting a friend on the back while complimenting him on his success, for example, or pounding your fists to underline your message.

Tips for improving how you read nonverbal communication

Practice observing people in public places, such as a shopping mall, bus, train, café, restaurant, or even on a television talk show with the sound muted. Observing how others use body language can teach you how to better receive and use nonverbal signals when conversing with others. Notice how people act and react to each other. Try to guess what their relationship is, what they’re talking about, and how each feels about what is being said. Be aware of individual differences. People from different countries and cultures tend to use different nonverbal communication gestures, so it’s important to take age, culture, religion, gender, and emotional state into account when reading body language signals. An American teen, a grieving widow, and an Asian businessman, for example, are likely to use nonverbal signals differently. Look at nonverbal communication signals as a group. Don’t read too much into a single gesture or nonverbal cue. Consider all of the nonverbal signals you receive, from eye contact to tone of voice to body language. Anyone can slip up occasionally and let eye contact slip, for example, or briefly cross their arms without meaning to. Consider the signals as a whole to get a better “read” on a person.

Tips for improving how to deliver nonverbal communication

Use nonverbal signals that match up with your words. Nonverbal communication should reinforce what is being said, not contradict it. If you say one thing, but your body language says something else, your listener will likely feel you’re being dishonest. For example, you can’t say “yes” while shaking your head no. Adjust your nonverbal signals according to the context. The tone of your voice, for example, should be different when you’re addressing a child than when you’re addressing a group of adults. Similarly, take into account the emotional state and cultural background of the person you’re interacting with. Use body language to convey positive feelings even when you’re not actually experiencing them. If you’re nervous about a situation—a job interview, important presentation, or first date, for example—you can use positive body language to signal confidence, even though you’re not feeling it. Instead of tentatively entering a room with your head down, eyes averted, and sliding into a chair, try standing tall with your shoulders back, smiling and maintaining eye contact, and delivering a firm handshake. It will make you feel more self-confident and help to put the other person at ease. Article provided by HELPGUIDE.org, a trusted non-profit resource.

COLLEGE TO CAREER:

Projected job openings in occupations that typically require a bachelor’s degree

W

hich occupations are expected to have the most jobs for college graduates? U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) employment projections shed light on occupations likely to have many opportunities for jobseekers who have a degree. BLS has classified more than 150 occupations that typically require a bachelor’s degree for entry. Between 2010 and 2020, these occupations are projected to have more than 8.5 million job openings. Occupations related to three groups—business, education, and computer science—account for many of these jobs. Keep reading to learn more about prospects for moving from college to career. The first section describes unemployment and earnings by college major. The second section talks about projected job openings in occupations that typically require a bachelor’s degree. The third section explains how to use this information to plan a career. And the final section gives sources for exploring further.

Unemployment and Earnings by College Major

People with a bachelor’s degree have a lower unemployment rate and earn more money than people who have less education, BLS data show. But your choice of college major can influence your employment options and earnings—and, sometimes, your ability to get a job. Unemployment rates of recent college graduates vary by field, National Center for Education Statistics data from 2009 show. One year after graduation, 2007–08 bachelor’s degree recipients in business, the most popular field of study, had an unemployment rate of about 9 percent. And unemployment among humanities and social science majors was almost 13 percent, more than twice the rate of their counterparts who majored in education or computer science and mathematics. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, class of 2012 engineering graduates had the highest average annual starting salaries, at $62,655. Humanities and social sciences graduates had average annual starting salaries that were more than $25,000 less than that. To enter some occupations, you typically need a bachelor’s degree in a specific field. Engineers, for example, usually need a degree in engineering. For others, employers may be willing to hire people from a variety of college majors. But having taken courses related to your occupations of interest is often helpful when looking for jobs.

But your choice of college major can influence your employment options and earnings—and, sometimes, your ability to get a job. Projected Job Openings in Bachelor’s Degree Occupations

How can you identify which occupations that typically require a bachelor’s degree are projected to have many job openings in the future? BLS classifies occupations into several education and training categories. Each occupation is assigned to the education, on-the-job training, and work experience categories that best describe a typical path for workers who want to enter the occupation.

Job Openings

BLS economists project the number of job openings in an occupation by estimating the jobs expected to be available over 10 years, the most recent

Currently we have a variety of openings in the following departments for experienced: • Nurses • Pharmacists • Clinical Lab Scientists • Physician Assistants For more information, please contact Kathy Sterner, Service Area Manager of Talent Acquisition at: (530) 225-6042 or by emailing Kathy.Sterner@DignityHealth.org. being between 2010 and 2020. The estimates reflect the total number of job openings expected in an occupation over the decade. Projected openings include all jobs expected to be available in the occupation, stemming from both the need to replace workers who leave an occupation permanently and the creation of new jobs.

Wages

A median wage means that half of the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount, and half earned less. Recent college graduates and other entrylevel workers should expect to earn less than the median wage. Whether an occupation is considered to have a high or low wage depends on how it compares with the May 2012 median annual wage of $34,750 for all wage and salary workers.

On-the-job Training

To enter some occupations, prospective workers first must have held a job in a related occupation. For example, art directors typically must have worked as a graphic designer, copy editor, or similar occupation before being eligible for entry-level art director jobs.

The training is occupation-specific, not job-specific, meaning that the skills learned can be transferred to another job in the same occupation. And it includes technical training that workers receive after being hired. Short-term on-the-job training lasts 1 month or less, moderate-term on-the-job training lasts between 1 and 12 months, and long-term on-the-job training lasts more than a year. Required internships or residencies, which generally involve supervised training in a professional setting, are also included in the category of on-the-job training.

Work experience

To enter some occupations, prospective workers first must have held a job in a related occupation. For example, art directors typically must have worked as a graphic designer, copy editor, or similar occupation before being eligible for entry-level art director jobs.

Business, Financial Operations and Sales

People in business, financial operations, and sales occupations usually like working with numbers or people or both. They have good organizational and analytical skills, which they use in decisionmaking and planning. And they are often detail oriented. Accountants and auditors and management analysts are projected to have the most job openings between 2010 and 2020. For business, financial operations, and sales occupations, the median annual wages in 2012 ranged from $39,420 for credit counselors to $91,830 for sales engineers. In many of these occupations, college graduates typically can qualify for—and be competent in—entry-level jobs with a bachelor’s degree and no additional on-the-job training or work experience. Examples are financial analysts, cost estimators, and training and development specialists. Graduates usually need additional training or experience. Sales representatives, for example, often need moderate-term on-the-job training to become competent in the occupation. And meeting, convention, and event planners often need some hotel or planning experience.

Education, Training, and Library

Workers in these occupations usually enjoy interacting with people. Most have good communication and instructional skills. Patience, critical thinking ability, and creativity are also important for some jobs. Elementary and secondary school teachers are the occupations projected to have the most job openings between 2010 and 2020. (Both totals exclude special education teachers, and secondary school teachers also does not include career or technical education teachers.) Median annual wages in May 2012 ranged from $38,220 for museum technicians and conservators to $56,830 for secondary school special education teachers. Public school teachers must be licensed by the state in which they work. Licensure requirements vary, but supervised teaching experience (classified by BLS as an internship/residency) is usually required. Prospective teachers often complete this requirement, commonly known as student teaching, while earning a degree. In some education, training, and library occupations, entry-level workers typically need experience in a related occupation. Career and technical education teachers, for example, typically need 1 to 5 years of experience in the field in which they teach, so many of these teachers have had careers in business, computer science, or engineering. Computer science and math. BLS projects have about 1.1 million job openings between 2010 and 2020. Most of the occupations are related to computer and information technology. People well suited for computer science and math occupations usually like analyzing and solving problems. Most have good technical ability and a strong grasp of mathematics. They also usually are detail oriented. Communication skills are important for some jobs in this group. Between 2010 and 2020, computer systems analysts and applications software developers are projected to have the most job openings . In May 2012, median annual wages for occupations in this group ranged from $62,500 for Web developers to $99,000 for systems software developers. Actuaries typically require on-the-job training. These workers must pass a series of exams to become fully competent in the occupation; many people take these exams while working as trainees in the occupation. BLS classifies this preparation as long-term on-the-job training. Prospective workers usually need experience to get an entry-level job. Database administrators, for example, typically have 1 to 5 years of experience in a related occupation such as financial analyst, market research analyst, or operations research analyst. And computer network architects

usually have at least 5 to 10 years of experience working in network administration or a similar field. Arts, media, and related. BLS projects about 623,000 job openings in these fields between 2010 and 2020. This group includes arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media occupations. Workers in these occupations are generally creative and enjoy interacting with people or developing ideas. Jobs may require artistic or musical ability. Good communication skills are important for some occupations in this group. Others jobs typically need technical or computer skills. People interested in arts, media, and related occupations often forge their own career path by working for themselves. Writers and authors, music directors and composers, and interior designers are among the occupations with a high percentage of selfemployed workers, according to BLS. Graphic designers and public relations specialists are projected to have the most job openings between 2010 and 2020. In May 2012, median annual wages for the occupations in this group ranged from $28,020 for radio and television announcers to $80,880 for art directors. On-the-job training is important for some of the occupations, including writers and authors, interpreters and translators, and multimedia artists and animators. For example, an entry-level public relations specialist might learn on the job by helping experienced staff members assemble information for speeches, news releases, or articles. These specialists may work in this role for 1 to 12 months before being assigned to write the products independently. Some occupations typically require 1 to 5 years of experience in a related occupation in addition to a bachelor’s degree. Producers, for example, might have experience as a business manager, assistant producer, or director.

Architecture and Engineering.

From 2010 to 2020, about 570,000 job openings are projected for those interested in architecture and engineering. People who pursue these occupations usually like math, analysis, and problem-solving. Communication, project management, creative, and technical skills are also valued in some engineering or architecture occupations. Mechanical ability and visualization skills may be required too. Civil and mechanical engineers are projected to have the most job openings between 2010 and 2020. In May 2012, median annual wages for the occupations in this group ranged from $56,230 for surveyors to $130,280 for petroleum engineers. Prospective architects usually must have at least 3 years of training before they are eligible to take the licensing exam that is required to work in the occupation. Most people meet this training requirement through an internship at an architectural firm after earning their degree, although college internships may also count toward the required time. Some engineers, such as those who sell their services directly to the public, need a license. However, people don’t typically need on-the-job training or work experience to be competent in, or to get entry-level jobs in, engineering occupations.

Healthcare, Community and Social Service

These occupations are projected to have about 533,000 job openings between 2010 and 2020. People who do these jobs usually enjoy helping others. They need good communication and interpersonal skills. And some jobs require workers to have attributes such as critical thinking, problem-solving, as well as decision-making abilities.

Child, family, and school social workers and clergy are the occupations that BLS projects to have the most job openings from 2010 to 2020. In May 2012, median annual wages for the occupations ranged from $37,280 for religious activities and education directors to $66,790 for occupational health and safety specialists. For some occupations, on-the-job training is required. Probation officers and correctional treatment specialists, for example, often must complete a training program offered by their state government or the federal government and then pass a certification test. Dietitians and nutritionists typically need to complete an internship, which involves several hundred hours of supervised training; many states also require that these workers are licensed.

Life, Physical and Social Science

About 193,000 job openings are projected for the occupations in this area between 2010 and 2020. Most of these projected job openings are in the life and physical sciences. People in these occupations usually like researching and solving problems. They need good critical-thinking ability. Communication skills, the ability to work well as part of a team, and an aptitude for math or technical subjects are also helpful. BLS projects environmental scientists and specialists, including health scientists, and biological technicians to have the most job openings between 2010 and 2020. Wages for the occupations ranged from $39,750 for biological technicians to $91,860 for economists in May 2012. A bachelor’s degree is usually enough preparation for entry-level jobs in these occupations. An exception is forensic science technicians, who typically also need moderate-term on-the-job training.

Before choosing a college major or thinking about a career, learn about occupations that interest you and identify the types of education and training commonly required. Talking to a career counselor and researching occupations are also helpful. Other occupations. BLS projects about 197,000 additional job openings between 2010 and 2020. These diverse occupations include workers from farming, fishing, and forestry; legal, office and administrative support; personal care and service; and transportation occupation groups. Necessary skills for these workers vary. Attention to detail is important for proofreaders, for example, but ship engineers need mechanical ability. Recreation workers and airline pilots, copilots, and flight engineers are projected to have the most job openings between 2010 and 2020. In May 2912, median annual wages for these occupations ranged from $22,240 for recreation workers to $114,200 for airline pilots, copilots, and flight engineers. More than half of the occupations in this area typically require moderateterm on-the-job training. Some of these occupations also may require experience in a related occupation. Airline pilots, for example, typically receive 6 to 8 weeks of ground school training and additional flight time from their employers after being hired. In addition, all pilots who are paid to transport passengers or cargo need a commercial pilot’s license and an instrument rating. These workers also typically need flight experience, such as that gained by flying planes in the military or having worked as a commercial pilot.

How to use This Information in Career Planning

There are many things to consider when choosing a career. In addition to data—such as unemployment rates and projections of job openings— you should also take into account your interests and abilities, what workers in an occupation do, and more. The projections data in this article provide information about future job openings. But for most occupations, many factors influence the job market and a college graduate’s ability to get a job in it. If you complete an internship while in school, for example, you may have an advantage over jobseekers who did not. Also keep in mind that people with a bachelor’s degree can work in occupations other than those shown here. This analysis looks only at

occupations that BLS classifies as typically requiring a bachelor’s degree for entry. Other occupations aren’t discussed because they are classified as typically needing another level of education, such as an associate’s or doctoral degree. BLS assigns occupations to education and training categories based on what economists in the Occupational Employment Projections program determine is a typical path for people to take to enter an occupation. However, many occupations have multiple paths to entry. For example, registered nurses often have a bachelor’s degree, and BLS projects more than 700,000 job openings between 2010 and 2020 for registered nurses. But BLS classifies this occupation as typically requiring an associate’s degree, because analysts have determined an associate’s degree to be the minimal requirement for entry-level jobs. After they are hired, many registered nurses complete additional levels of education. Jobseekers with a bachelor’s degree may apply for entry-level jobs, even if applicants do not typically need more than an associate’s degree, and some employers may prefer to hire candidates who have more education than what is typical. Before choosing a college major or thinking about a career, learn about occupations that interest you and identify the types of education and training commonly required. Talking to a career counselor and researching occupations are also helpful.

Apprenticeships: Earn While You Learn

“I

like that I can have a full-time job and pay my mortgage while going to school,” says chef’s apprentice Brian Schmitt of Davenport, Iowa. “And I like that my job is directly applicable to the work that I want to do.” Many people work and learn at the same time. But in addition to getting a paycheck, apprentices like Schmitt are also getting a career boost: their on-the-job experience and technical instruction are part of a formal program to help them master an occupation. Formal apprenticeship programs connect jobseekers who want to learn new skills with employers who want to train workers in jobs that use those skills. Most programs last about 4 years, although some take as little as 1 year and others as long as 6 years. At the end of a registered apprenticeship program, apprentices get a nationally recognized certificate of completion as proof of their skills. But it’s not always easy to find apprenticeship programs. It helps to know where to look—and what to look for. This article is an overview of registered apprenticeships. The first section explains what apprenticeship programs are, some of the occupations they prepare you for, and what advantages they offer. The second section describes how to find, choose, and apply for an apprenticeship. The third section helps you plan for success. The fourth section has sources for more information. Testimonials from apprentices appear throughout the article.

About apprenticeships

Whether you’re new to the labor force, changing careers, or just looking to expand your skills, there might be an apprenticeship that appeals to you. People start apprenticeships at almost any age, but many apprenticeship sponsors require participants to be at least 18. Although many apprentices have a high school diploma or equivalent, others have more or less education than that. And about 7 percent of active registered apprentices nationwide in 2012 were veterans, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Most formal apprenticeship programs are registered with DOL. These programs prepare workers for occupations in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and healthcare. The opportunity to earn money, train for an occupation, and build a career foundation are just some of the benefits.

Apprenticeable Occupations

In 2012, DOL counted more than 250 occupations with registered apprentices. Apprenticeship isn’t the only way to prepare for many of these occupations, but it’s often a popular way. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), apprenticeship is a typical entry path for 15 occupations: • Boilermakers • Brickmasons and blockmasons • Carpenters • Electricians • Elevator installers and repairers • Funeral directors • Glaziers • Mechanical insulation workers • Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters • Real estate appraisers and assessors • Reinforcing iron and rebar workers • Sheet metal workers • Stonemasons

Apprenticeship programs are sponsored by individual employers, employer associations, and labor unions. Sponsors pay wages, which often start out at about half those of a fully qualified worker.

Registered apprenticeships must meet certain guidelines set by DOL. People who complete these programs receive a nationally recognized certificate of completion, either from DOL or from an approved state agency. According to DOL, there were more than 358,000 registered apprentices in more than 21,000 apprenticeship programs in 2012. The actual number of apprenticeships may be higher, however, because DOL and state apprenticeship agencies do not oversee all programs. Apprenticeship programs are sponsored by individual employers, employer associations, and labor unions. Sponsors pay wages, which often start out at about half those of a fully qualified worker. Wages increase as registered apprentices advance in the occupation. For most programs, apprentices must complete 2,000 hours of on-the-job training and at least 144 hours of related technical instruction each year. Apprentices usually work fulltime, under the direction of experienced workers, to meet training requirements. Many apprentices receive their technical instruction by attending classes at an apprenticeship training center, technical school, or community college. Apprentices may go to class 1 or 2 days a week, either before or after work, or go to school full-time for several weeks each year. Frequently, sponsors pay for this technical instruction.

“I did a pre-apprenticeship program called Building Pathways. It was a brilliant program. If it weren’t for that program, I wouldn’t be where I am today. That program gave me an opportunity to get a taste for every trade that was out there, and at the end I got to pick which ones I liked best. It also gave me an idea of what to expect with the union and with an apprenticeship. The people at the pre-apprenticeship also helped me get references and fill out applications. I wanted to be a sheet metal apprentice, and I was lucky because they were taking people in. Building Pathways was a preapprenticeship program for low-income housing authority residents. I was out of work, saw the flyer in my building, and took a chance. It’s the best thing that ever happened to me.”

instruction—which is often free—and a solid start to a career. A paycheck. Apprentices start earning money right away, which is a big draw for many who choose this type of career preparation. In addition to wages, some apprentices are eligible for health insurance or other employee benefits. Apprentices usually make at least minimum wage. As apprentices’ skills progress, their wages typically increase. “You’re going to start off pretty low on the salary scale because you’re preparing for a trade that takes a long time to learn,” says Drew Haigh, a moldmaker apprentice in San Dimas, California. “You’ll make your money over time.” According to DOL, the average wage for a journey-level, or fully qualified, worker who completed an apprenticeship in 2012 was $24.77 an hour, or $51,522 a year. And a 2012 DOL-sponsored report by Mathematica Policy Research found that people who completed their apprenticeships have higher average lifetime earnings than those who did not. But even before they earn journey-level wages, some apprentices say that their starting wage is an improvement over what they had been making. For example, Tyrell Ellis earns about $17 an hour in his first year as a sheet metal worker apprentice in Mattapan, Massachusetts. “Before the apprenticeship I was making $10 an hour, working all kinds of hours,” says Ellis. “I would have to work nonstop every day to make what I make now. Hands-on training. While on the job, apprentices learn practical skills from experienced workers. Having worked under many mentors has helped Dan Glass to develop a wide range of skills. “You learn something different from everyone,” says Glass, a third year outside lineman (power line installer and repairer) apprentice in Delta Junction, Alaska. By the end of their apprenticeship, people usually have had experience with all of the major aspects of their occupation. “It’s an effective way to learn,” says Schmitt. He adds

that because apprentices get their skills on the job, they don’t face the same learning curve that many inexperienced workers do when they begin a new job. Technical instruction. Apprentices receive related technical instruction that they use on the job. “When you go to work the next day, you get to apply what you’ve learned,” says Monique Gerard, who recently finished a steamfitter apprenticeship in Peoria, Illinois. “You really get to hone your skills.” Apprentices’ technical instruction is usually provided by people who work in the industry, and their sponsor frequently pays. Completed classes may count toward certification or licensure requirements, which help boost apprentices’ credentials and are sometimes necessary to work in an occupation. Some apprentices earn college credits or an associate’s or bachelor’s degree during their program. And apprentices often appreciate how much they gain from the instruction. “I’ve learned so much in my class this past year that it’s really amazing,” says Bob Solden, in his first year of a CNC (computer numerically controlled) machinist apprenticeship in Petaluma, California. “I feel like I’m gaining so much knowledge.” Build a career foundation. At the end of their programs, apprentices earn a certificate of completion, issued by DOL or a state apprenticeship agency. This certificate is recognized by employers around the country. Because apprentices’ credentials are widely accepted, people who have finished an apprenticeship program frequently haveincreased occupational mobility. “It puts you in a position where you can go anywhere in the United States and get a job in a short amount of time at a decent wage, rather than having to start out at the entry level,” says Schmitt. During the course of an apprenticeship program, apprentices are encouraged to make contacts in their industry. This networking may help them get a job when they reach journey-level status. Some apprentices finish the program and then start a career with the same employer who sponsored them.

Getting An Apprenticeship

Getting an apprenticeship is similar to getting a job: you need to find a program, apply for an opening, and qualify for selection.

Finding Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships involve commitment, so you’ll need to find and choose a program that’s right for you. Search for programs. You can look for apprenticeship openings in a variety of ways. State apprenticeship agencies are often a good resource and usually keep lists of apprenticeships. Another way to identify apprenticeship programs is to visit an American Job Center. You might also search for apprenticeships advertised in a newspaper or online. Or you can contact a local union or other apprenticeship sponsor directly to ask about opportunities. DOL’s Office of Apprenticeship website provides contact information for all of the sponsors in the registered apprenticeship database, searchable by state and county. In addition, community colleges and other schools sometimes post openings for available apprenticeships, which may be offered as part of an educational program. Some workers approach their employer about creating an apprenticeship position in a job they already have. To find apprenticeships by occupation, visit DOL’s My Next Move website at www.mynextmove.org. Special programs. Some programs are designed for specific groups. For example, school-to-apprenticeship programs allow high schoolers in some states to get started in an apprenticeship while they are students. Apprenticeships for active-duty service members provide training in some military occupations. And some correctional institutions offer programs for inmates. Preapprenticeship programs are another option. These programs help people qualify and prepare for apprenticeships. Participants might learn about career options and what an apprenticeship involves, for example, while they develop occupational skills. Choosing a program. Apprenticeships vary in their schedules, pay, costs, technical instruction, and other details. Costs, for example, might include application fees, union dues, school tuition, books, and tools or other equipment, such as safety boots or uniforms. Before you choose a program, it is important to learn about the occupation you’re interested in. Talk to people in the occupation or tour a jobsite to get a better sense of the work culture and tasks.

“Our union puts out apprenticeship testing every 2 years. Traditionally, it’s been published in the newspaper, but this year they updated our website to reflect when the application and testing dates are. The union sponsors apprentices. They get calls from contractors, who might say, “I need 20 people for 40 hours a week.” The union hall calls you, you work for 40 hours, and then you’re laid off. Then, when there is more work, you’re sent off to do it. Each job requires a certain skill set. On one job, you might be rigging big pieces of pipe. On the next job, you might be running drain lines. You get a lot of work experience and the opportunity to work with people who’ve been doing this for 30 or 35 years. At the end, you realize exactly how much you’ve learned, and it’s pretty surprising.” At ConAgra Foods, we make great food — everyday food — in extraordinary ways, which is why we’re creating meaningful career opportunities for the best and the brightest. Gerard didn’t really know what steamfitters did until she asked someone about the basics of the work. After learning more about it, she decided to apply—and is glad she did. “I’ve never been happier in any job in my life,” Gerard says. “The skilled trades are fantastic to get into. I am doing something productive and important.”

Application and Selection

To get an apprenticeship, you must first apply for one. Apprentices are typically chosen through a competitive process, which often involves interviews, rankings, and other factors. Applying. Apprenticeship requirements vary by sponsor and program. For many programs, you must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. You might also need to have completed certain classes in school or to pass an aptitude test in subjects such as math, physics, and reading comprehension. Related work experience is sometimes necessary. And some programs require drug tests or a phys-

ical exam to verify that you are able to do key tasks in the occupation. When you apply for an apprenticeship program, you may need to pay a fee of about $20 to $45 and submit other material. This supplemental material might include written recommendations, school transcripts, and proof of identification, such as a birth certificate or driver’s license. Interviews. Applicants who meet the initial requirements usually have one or more interviews with their prospective sponsor. Interviewers want to know more about your qualifications, that you’ll be reliable, and whether you are really interested in doing the work. Prepare for an apprenticeship interview as you would for a job interview: dress nicely, think about how you will answer common interview questions, and be ready to discuss your work-related skills and interests. In addition, sponsors usually want to know that you understand the work involved in the occupation you will train for. “Before they invested in me, they wanted to make sure I was completely devoted to it,” says

September 2013

Haigh. “You have to be really committed to want to do a 4-year apprenticeship.” Rankings. Qualified apprenticeship applicants are often ranked on factors such as aptitude test results, interview performance, education, and work experience. As sponsors need apprentices, the most competitive applicants—those with the highest rankings—are chosen first. Applicants with lower rankings might need to wait until there’s another opening. The wait may last several weeks to several years. Gerard, for example, had to wait for 6 months before being contacted about an opening. Sometimes, people apply for an apprenticeship more than once. Networking. For apprenticeship applicants, like for jobseekers, networking can be beneficial. It allows you to meet people in the occupations you might be apprenticing for and helps you to learn more about a program. Applicants might also gain a better sense of what to expect in an apprenticeship. In addition, your networking contacts may recommend you to sponsors. “Definitely make connections, because that’s a big part of the application and selection process,” says Shamir Turner, a sheet metal worker apprentice from Somerville, Massachusetts. “I’m not sure I would have gotten into my apprenticeship program if I hadn’t known someone who could vouch for me.

“I retired from an outside sales career that I was in for about 20 years. It was good money, but I wanted to do something that I enjoyed. In my program, you get a 2-year associate’s degree from a college. Because it’s an apprenticeship program, you receive your journey-level card from the U.S. Department of Labor. Part of the curriculum is a practicum class each semester, including summers. The practicums are like a fulltime job. Most classes are on Monday, with a 3-hour class in the morning and a 3-hour class in the evening, and then you have the rest of the week off to work in the field. It’s up to the students to choose where they work. You get jobs on your own merit, through interviews and applications. You earn the same wage as anyone hired to do the job. There are about 90 to 100 local restaurants in our area, and they are categorized as entry-level, intermediate, or advanced, based on how much experience you’ll get at them. Plan for Success

Those who are in or have completed apprenticeships have a few pointers to help prospective apprentices succeed. For example, Schmitt says that apprentices should remember that they are entrylevel workers. “Set your expectations realistically,” he says. “Be willing to pay your dues for a few years, and don’t get discouraged if you’re not running the show.” Ellis agrees. “Expect to be the lowest one on the totem pole and to do whatever is asked of you, even if it’s just getting coffee,” he says. Others who’ve succeeded encourage apprentices to take advantage of any additional training or certification programs offered to them. Apprentices should also to try to learn as much as they can from their mentors about different aspects of the work. “What you get out of it,” says Schmitt, “is what you put into it.”
