Iremember one grade school teacher and one high school teacher vividly. When I think about the similarities of the two, and why they stood out among all the others, I realize that it wasn't that they made me feel special, rather, they each made me feel like I had something to contribute to the class. I wonder if they made everyone in the class feel that way. Is that the measure of a great teacher? I believe it is.

Teachers have helped nurture important life skills such as problem-solving, communication, and teamwork in me. They can provide a safe and supportive environment where students can learn, grow, and develop their unique talents and abilities. A career in teaching allows individuals to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people, allowing them to reach their full potential and contribute positively to the world around them.

Teachers have the rare opportunity to make a lasting impact on their students but also on future generations by shaping the leaders, innovators, and change-makers of tomorrow. In essence, a career in teaching is not just important; it is essential for building a brighter and more prosperous future for all.

you would never usually do in front of other adults. You can really express yourself and the kids won’t think you’re strange; they’ll love it!

4 Types of Law Enforcement Careers

All law enforcement careers in the United States can be highly rewarding. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), approximately 68,500 openings for police officers and detectives are projected each year between 2021 and 2031, with a total growth of three percent over the decade.

The law enforcement industry offers a wide range of opportunities for individuals seeking a public service career. Jobs are available at local, state and federal levels of government, giving job seekers the option of many different positions to pursue. The four main types of law enforcement careers are outlined below.

1. UNIFORMED OFFICERS

When most people envision a job in law enforcement, they think about a uniformed police officer. To become a uniformed officer, a person may need a high school diploma or college degree, depending on the position.

Uniformed officers may also be required to attend an academy for approximately 12 to 14 weeks , as well as undergo an assessment by a police or state department. Drug screening and background checks are also common requirements.

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) conducted a 2017 survey which showed that the majority of registered nurses — more than 80 percent — represented Caucasian or white racial/ethnic backgrounds. Of minority populations, 7.5 percent represented Asian backgrounds, 6.2 percent represented African American backgrounds, and 5.4 percent represented Hispanic backgrounds. The same survey also found that over 90 percent of the RN workforce were women.

When it comes to diversity in nursing education, there is good news. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), nursing education programs are contributing to an increase of diversity.

Diversity Awareness and Cultural Competence in Healthcare

The American Nurses Association (ANA) explains diversity awareness to be “acknowledgment and appreciation of differences in attitudes, beliefs, thoughts, and priorities in the health-seeking behaviors of different populations.”

The concept of cultural competence echoes a similar sentiment. Cultural competence in healthcare means providing superior care to patients with diverse beliefs, backgrounds, and values.

At its core, cultural competence is treating patients with an awareness of how their experience impacts their feelings and attitudes about their own health and wellness. So, even if nurses come from a different community or socioeconomic status than their patients, they should frame care within the context of that patient’s experience. Healthcare Job Growth Reached Three-decade High in 2023

The sector added 650,000 jobs over the year — its most prolific year of growth in decades.

The healthcare industry hemorrhaged workers during the start of the COVID19 pandemic, as employees burned out, left for opportunities in other fields or retired early.

Healthcare jobs largely recovered from early pandemic losses by October 2022 , according to BLS data. But executives have continued to wring their hands about recruitment and retention. Credit agencies, such as Fitch Ratings, have said recruitment is the single largest issue facing health systems today.

Yet, the industry is expanding, according to the Altarum report. In 2023, the industry hired more prolifically than it has in the last three decades, outpacing other industries more than two-fold.

Job growth primarily occurred in ambulatory service centers. Health system executives have touted ambulatory care as an area of focus for 2024 as patient preferences evolve to favor outpatient settings.

Since 2020, ambulatory care jobs have grown 9.2%, according to the report. Across 2023, ambulatory care settings added 26,700 jobs per month on average, while hospitals added 15,300.

However, it’s still proven difficult to attract staff at nursing and residential homes. Nursing facilities added approximately 5,800 jobs per month and residential care facilities added 6,800 new jobs per month in the past year.

While wage growth dipped for the healthcare sector overall between 2022 and 2023, wage growth was the highest for nursing and residential positions, suggesting companies may be paying more at baseline to attract talent, according to the report.

The contraction of positions is also likely due to nursing home closures, lower resident censuses and staffing shortages, according to the report.

Last fall, the Biden administration proposed a rule that would require long-term care facilities to beef up staffing . However, lobbying organizations and trade groups have opposed the rule, saying that the policies are prohibitive in the current staffing climate
