I've been thinking a lot about perspective lately. It started when I had a debate with a male friend about the Barbie movie. He saw the message of the movie one way, I saw it another. I knew I would not be able to convince him to see it my way, and I also knew I would never switch to his. Our perspectives are different.

Then I went to a friend's birthday party. She turned one hundred and two. 102! The best part is, she still lives alone (with the help of amazing neighbors) takes no prescription medication, and has all of her mental faculties. Sure, you have to raise your voice a bit, and it's best if you're on her left side when talking to her, but overall, she's still got it all together. She's pleasant, grateful, and gracious—she says, "Thank you, this is so good," if you make her a sandwich for lunch. She's open-minded and kind, and also a little bit stubborn, and I like her very much.

I think about all the things that she has witnesssed in her lifetime: the history, changes in technology, the expansion of the small California town she moved to in 1962. So when I saw her last week, we talked about her perspective. I asked her about what she thought about the way our world was progressing.

"There's always going to be both good and bad in the world," she told me. "It's best if you seek out and focus on the good."

Now that's a perspective I can support.

Women in Finance Share Stories of Perseverance, Ambition, Big Dreams

Closing the gender gap in the financial sector is no easy task. But thanks to the resilience of many women who rose through the ranks of financial corporations, a once extremely men-dominated and traditional industry is gradually opening up and becoming more inclusive.

The percentage of women leading financial companies is still low on a global scale (around 7%), but Latin America is making huge progress with 35% of startups and financial companies either led by a woman CEO or have women co-founders.

According to a Finnovista report , companies with gender diversity in the financial sector have 25% better performance than peers with executive positions held entirely by men. Despite this significant difference, women in finance still encounter many challenges as they aspire for more leadership roles.

Tribal, a crypto-powered platform for B2B finance and payments, sees gender balance, inclusion, and equity as key to building a human-centered work culture that values diversity. We spoke to women on the Tribal team to get their views on how they navigated the financial world of work, how they managed to overcome challenges, and how they continue their journey of grit and resilience.

Camaraderie Moves Mountains

The financial world taught Lyssette Alatorre De Koster that patience is the key to success. In the mid-nineties, it was rare to find women working in finance and most universities in Mexico City didn’t offer any specialized majors.

The now Sr. Product Manager at Tribal had to wait a year to be admitted to the Finance department at the university, but that did not stop her from joining a prestigious bank, where she led products, projects, and sales.

COMMITMENT
AND
Challenging

Lyssette believes in the importance of women support networks. If more women support each other, they will be more empowered to unite and form a sorority that can move mountains, she says.

Dealing with Numbers

Falling in love with finance can sometimes be challenging, but it takes believing in your strengths to follow your dreams and turn your passion into a success story. Nancy Zapata , Lead Account Executive at Tribal, reflects on her career path in the world of numbers.

Society is open to seeing women in professions that were mostly dominated by men, especially ones that have to do with finance and accounting. This is evident in the growing number of women joining the ranks of finance management. We are still far from gender equity and salary equality, but

at least we are opening the doors to future generations, says Nancy, adding that startups are breaking the traditional gender paradigms by focusing on diversity.

For Nancy, March 8 is a very significant day, due to the fact that it serves as a reminder of how powerful women are. “To be leaders we must believe in ourselves, there is nothing that is unattainable,” adds Nancy.

Changing, evolving and resilient industries

What would women be without their power of resilience?

You could say it is a gift. Resilience helps to cope with life’s challenges; it is an instrumental force needed to overcome difficulties.

For Amira Fadel , Tribal’s Regional Manager for the Middle East and North Africa, the support among women, her family and work colleagues, is the factor that has led her to evolve as a professional and a woman.

Without a doubt, there are challenges in any industry, but in finance, you have to keep your knowledge up to date to stay on top of trends and evolve quickly. Arguably, this is the same thing that is happening to women in the financial world.

The industry is transforming rapidly, as women are found in every field today, and that number is changing rapidly the more attention we pay to it.

It is time to encourage more women to be open to different roles and opportunities, as well as to lose the fear of taking risks. That’s why it matters that more women work in work environments that support developing full potential and achieving aspirations.

Types of Education Degrees for Future Educators

Teachers and other educators can make a profound impact on the lives of others, whether they’re working with a classroom of 5-year-olds, providing skills training to team members at a Fortune 500 company, or designing the curricula for a performing arts camp.

Additionally, different types of education degrees, such as a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), Master of Education (MEd), or a Doctorate of Education (EdD) can prepare graduates with in-demand expertise and skills. These include specialized knowledge pertaining to their major and soft skills such as communication skills, critical thinking skills, and time management skills that are transferable to a wide

Consequently, one of the first steps an individual should take toward a successful career in education is to determine which type of career path they’re most interested in pursuing. This will help ensure that they choose a degree program that matches their professional goals.

Why Get a Degree in Education? Education Degree Benefits

Students interested in pursuing a career in education have a variety of undergraduate degree programs to choose from, as there are multiple degrees applicable to the education sector. Whereas individuals interested in teaching history can start their educational journey by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in US or world history, those interested in working as a high school science teacher may choose to major in biology, chemistry, or physics.

Another education degree benefit is that individuals interested in pursuing leadership positions in the field can choose from numerous graduate programs, depending on their interests. Aspiring school psychologists may pursue a master’s in counseling, while those interested in teaching English literature at the college level may find that a master’s degree in English aligns better with their career goals.

Teaching Careers

Teachers are in demand. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment of all educators, including preschool teachers, elementary school teachers, middle school teachers, high school teachers, and postsecondary teachers, is projected to grow by 10 percent between 2020 and 2030, which is about as fast as the job growth the BLS projects for all occupations during that period.

Approximately 920,500 new jobs are expected to be added during that reporting period. The BLS projects that student enrollment will increase in communities throughout the US and additional teachers will be needed to meet that demand.

Our Employees

Our Employees Connect Brilliant Minds Every Day

Payscale reports that, as of June 2022, the median salary for teachers was approximately $50,200 annually, with earners in the top 10th percentile having a median salary of around $77,000 per year. Actual salaries vary depending on the teacher’s experience level, the geographical region of their position, whether they hold an advanced degree, and the school district they work for.

TYPES OF EDUCATION DEGREES

Students interested in pursuing education careers have many types of education degrees to choose from. For example, at the undergraduate level, students can choose to major in English, psychology, sociology, education, history, a foreign language, science, math, or engineering. Most bachelor’s degrees require students to complete approximately 120 credit hours of coursework prior to graduation, and most full-time students find they can complete their undergraduate studies in approximately four years.

Educators interested in pursuing leadership roles who are looking into master’s and doctoral degree programs can choose from several degree options as well, depending on their interests. Similar to the completion timeline for a baccalaureate degree, the time it takes to complete a master’s or doctoral degree can vary based on the credit hour requirement of the program they’re enrolled in and whether they’re enrolled as a part-time or full-time student.

Examples of postgraduate education degrees and their admissions requirements include the following:

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)

A Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program is an advanced degree program that’s designed to prepare future educators for both licensure and specialized career paths in the teaching profession. Credit hour requirements for MAT programs vary widely from school to school. Some programs require students to complete a minimum of 28 credit hours to be eligible to graduate, while other programs require as many as 42 credit hours.

September 2023 equal opportunity employment journal Page 11

Additionally, as MAT programs allow students to choose from a variety of specializations, some specializations require more credit hours than others. Specializations for MAT programs include the following:

Early Childhood Education : This concentration prepares educators with advanced expertise in teaching methodologies for prekindergarten through third-grade classrooms.

Elementary Education : This general education program specialization is designed for individuals interested in working with elementary school-aged children in grades one to six.

Language Arts : This concentration teaches best practices for teaching the English language, including reading, writing, and literature studies.

Mathematics : Teachers interested in gaining advanced knowledge and skills for teaching mathematics to students in grades five to 12 may find that a concentration in mathematics aligns best with their career goals.

general education track is designed for teachers interested in working with students in grades four to eight.

Science : A concentration in science prepares graduates to teach courses such as biology, earth and space science, chemistry, and physics.

Secondary Education : Individuals who opt for this specialization will receive generalized knowledge in teaching subjects such as biological science, English, social sciences, and mathematics to students in grades nine to 12.

Special Education : This specialization is designed for students interested in working with special needs students, such as those who have learning or physical disabilities.

Pursue Your Dream and Shape Lives as an Educator

Students interested in pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in education must start by narrowing

down the career path they’re most interested in pursuing. From there, they can evaluate degree programs to determine which academic institution and which major is best for them. An important step when evaluating potential colleges and universities is to ensure that both the school and the program are accredited.

American University offers an Online Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), Online Master of Education in Education Policy and Leadership (MEd) , and Online EdD in Education Policy and Leadership for students looking to take the next step in their careers. Each program is rooted in inclusive, anti-racist pedagogy and contemporary methods to create lasting improvement in education. Students can benefit from intentional curricula to prepare them for all types of educational careers.

Are you ready to take the next step forward in your educational journey? Discover how earning a degree in education can prepare you for the professional future you want.

Hispanic Heritage Month Activities for The Remote Workplace

Hispanic Heritage Month 2023 is September 15 – October 15.  Is your team ready to celebrate? In this list, you’ll find creative ways to engage your remote team. Learn, grow, and boost morale while exploring Hispanic Heritage.

What is Hispanic Heritage Month?

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to reflect on the importance of Hispanic culture. It’s also a time to celebrate and grow together while supporting our Hispanic friends and colleagues.

Hispanic Heritage Week began in 1968 in the United States, when President Lyndon Johnson signed Hispanic Heritage Week into law. Then, in 1988, the celebration expanded into a month when President Ronald Reagan signed National Hispanic Heritage Month into law. Specifically, the Heritage Month starts on September 15. That’s because September 15 is independence day for five Spanish-speaking countries. In 1821, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua declared their independence.

Today, we celebrate the month-long holiday of Hispanic culture, from September 15 through October 15. During this time, you can enjoy festivals, dances, concerts, parades, and more.

During the year, you can honor a variety of holidays and traditions. For example, you might choose to delve into the history and culture behind Cinco de Mayo or Day of the Dead.

Explore the Hispanic Star’s website on Hispanic Heritage Month. You’ll find an entire toolkit. Try PowerPoints, digital media assets, swag items, and more.

5. Learn Spanish with Your Team!

Does your team love a fun challenge? If so, then try learning the Spanish language as a team!

During each day of Hispanic Heritage Month, pick a word or phrase for your team to learn. Then, send out the word of the day in a Slack thread or to email addresses. Challenge everyone to use the word in an internal conversation or email. Soon, your team will be stringing sentences together!

Looking for more support to help your team learn a new language? Duolingo is a popular and free language-learning app. Encourage your team to check it out so they can continue learning even after Hispanic Heritage Month is over!

6. Learn the Preferred Terminology

Language is always shifting. In order to be respectful and inclusive, it’s important to learn the preferred terminology – especially when it comes to marginalized communities. Help your team understand the most respectful phrasing when speaking about cultural topics.

For example, does your team know the difference between Latino and Hispanic? In short, Latino means from Latin America. Hispanic means from a country whose primary language is Spanish. You might also want to highlight different countries and share information about them.

Take some time during Hispanic Heritage Month to educate your team, so everyone can have important conversations respectfully. Or, take the opportunity to host a DEI training session to refresh everyone.

Diversity in Police Force Hiring Promotes Community Trust

Law enforcement is of course an honorable profession. There are now nationwide talks, however, on how law enforcement can be reformed to best meet the needs of the communities the police serve.

One of the most important initiatives to ensure that law enforcement is fully capable of serving the community is by insisting on diversity within the department. Diversity is important because it strengthens the department by bringing together officers of different backgrounds, viewpoints, and experiences.

Why Diversity in Law Enforcement Is Essential to Good Policing

Diversity in law enforcement is essential to good policing among both line officers and the management structure because it improves problem solving and utilizes different perspectives to meet the daily demands in the field. Also, diversity within a police agency displays a commitment to equal treatment of the law within the community.

Police officers are highly visible to the public. Therefore, when a community sees a fully diverse police force, its trust is likely to increase because it’s evident that the local police are taking steps to recruit candidates who understand the many needs of the community.

Police agencies that are most successful when they have the support of the community they serve on a daily basis.

Strategies for Improving Diversity in Policing

Diversity can be accomplished through proactive and intentional recruitment . Strategies to improve diversity in policing include:

– Developing a department culture that recognizes the value of diversity. This can be accomplished through diversity training during annual block training cycles.

– Targeting community outreach programs that intentionally encourage citizens of various backgrounds and ethnicities to consider a police career.

– Working with local colleges and educational institutions to develop partnerships and pipeline programs that help

reach potential applicants. Partnerships with these institutions should help to address and overcome historically negative perceptions of the police especially in minority communities.

– Providing police internships that give citizens who are considering a career in law enforcement the chance to par-

ticipate in a police road-patrol briefing and ride along to gain deeper insight into the daily responsibilities of a police officer.

– Increasing the use of social media platforms to recruit and communicate with the diverse community. Police agencies can display on social media the strategies they are using to promote internal diversity and increase community trust.

– Offering bonuses or financial incentives for officers who are bilingual. In addition, publishing recruiting material in multiple languages that reflect the community populations.

– Encouraging community members to get involved in the hiring process to increase recruitment and give citizens the opportunity to become stakeholders in the police hiring process.

A bill was recently approved in Philadelphia that requires new city police officers to have lived in the city for at least one year prior to being hired. The bill was championed by city council president Darrell Clarke , who explained

Miami-Dade County, Florida, has initiated a countywide program called “ Diversity Matters ,” which is designed to support diversity and workplace fairness. In its hiring practices, Miami-Dade seeks employees who can respond properly to its multicultural population. The plan calls for hiring employees, including for the police force, with diverse skills, talents, and perspectives.

As we’ve seen, diversity in hiring is one of the most effective ways to strengthen policing and to display to the community the force’s commitment to serve its unique needs with a diverse workforce that understands the unique challenges of the community. Developing a workforce of officers who reside in the community they patrol can foster community trust and better protect their community.

This is why predominant business publications, such as Forbes , and the CEO of Johnson & Johnson , Alex Gorsky, speak so highly of organizations hiring Veterans to work.

The things they learn at the military academy: duty, honor, country, the honor code,” said Gorsky. “It’s hard work, it’s problem-solving, it’s critical thinking, it’s leadership. All those things, that’s what we need more of in business,” he continued.

14 Reasons to Choose A Career in Nursing

Did you know that the nursing shortage is expected to increase in the coming years? Baby boomers are aging and a significant portion of the nursing profession is reaching retirement age. In March 2020, it was estimated that 22% of the 2 million registered nurses (RNs) who work in hospitals were 55 or older.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) also estimates the nursing profession will experience 6% job growth by 2031, making now the perfect time to pursue nursing as a career.

Nursing offers many entry-level nursing options , specialties, and working environments. Read on for 16 reasons why choosing a career in nursing might be a meaningful path for you.

1 | Nurses Make a Real Difference

Nurses do much more than perform medical tasks. As a nurse, you can make a real difference in someone’s life. You can offer hope to people, sometimes during the worst time of their life. Nurses often counsel patients and families after a devastating diagnosis, celebrate with them when they receive good news, and become trusted confidantes. Nurses can also improve their communities through volunteering.

In a 2017 survey , 74% of nurses pointed to activities unrelated to work when asked what they had done to improve their community’s health. Activities included health fairs, health-related volunteering, raising or donating money, and traveling for volunteer work.

2 | Nursing Degree Programs Exist Everywhere

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) ranks health professions in the top three associate degrees by the number of graduates. Bachelor’s degrees are in the top two. Most large cities have a selection of colleges and universities that offer an ADN or BSN program . For example, check out the top RN-to-BSN programs in Ohio , nursing schools in Arizona , and online colleges in Alabama .

3 | Nurses Can Pursue Their Education Online

You can also choose to get your nursing degree through accredited online nursing programs , which means you can be located anywhere in the U.S. Since nursing is a hands-on profession, you will be required to both take classes online and complete in-person nursing clinicals at a healthcare setting.

It’s important to ensure the online program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education . This is necessary to take the National Council Licensure Examination for RNs (NCLEX-RN) and master NCLEX-style test questions to get your license.

Many hospitals offer tuition remission

4 | Many Nursing Students Find Financial Aid Opportunities

Student debt can be overwhelming. Payback programs can take up to a decade to pay off. However, nursing students have many ways to get nursing school paid for

Options include nursing scholarships and grant money from a variety of organizations. Financial aid is available for students seeking an associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and even DNP degree . Also, many hospitals offer tuition remission programs for staff looking to go back to school.

5 | Nurses Can Enter the Workforce Relatively Quickly

Several different nursing degrees allow you to enter the workforce quickly. If you return to school to complete your bachelor’s degree, you can do it while earning an income.

After graduating from an accredited two-year associate program, you can make an average annual salary of $73,000 ( Payscale, Nov. 2022 ) with some of the highest-paying associate degrees . Earning your BSN degree opens more opportunities for career advancement and an average annual salary of $89,000 ( Payscale, Nov. 2022 ).

6 | Nurses Have a High Level of Job Satisfaction

Job satisfaction and career satisfaction are different. The first measures satisfaction with a specific job, while the second measures satisfaction with your career choice. The 2019 American Mobile Nurses (AMN) Healthcare survey found that 81% of nurses were satisfied or extremely satisfied with their career choice.

When asked if they would encourage others to become a nurse, 70% said “yes.” The survey also found that supporting professional development was tied to job satisfaction. When employers supported nursing professional development , 52% were extremely satisfied with their jobs. When employers did not support professional development, only 7% were extremely satisfied.

7 | Nurses Get to Do Exciting Work

Each day with patients can be different. Whether you are working in a clinic, office, hospital, or within an organization, nursing is not dull. In the 2017 Survey of Registered Nurses by AMN Healthcare, data showed nurses had plans to work outside direct patient care , could work fewer hours depending on their situation, and some planned to go into travel nursing

8 | Nursing Is a Respected Field

In 1999, Gallup started a decades-long survey to determine the most ethical and honest profession. In December 2020, for an impressive 19 years, Americans ranked nurses in the number one position. The only year nurses were not in the top spot was following September 11, 2001, when firefighters earned the highest score.

In addition to ranking first, nurses also earned the highest score to date in 2020 for honesty and ethics. In 2020, the ranking was four percentage points higher than the last recorded high in 2019.

9 | Nurses Can Choose Their Specialty

Nurses are a vital part of delivering healthcare in many different settings. You can choose from over 100 different types of nursing specialties , which means you’ll likely never be bored. You can focus on general healthcare such as gerontological nursing , or expand your role to work as a flight nurse or transplant nurse . You can also pursue health policy careers

Another benefit is how easily you can move from one specialty to another. For example, after practicing as a dialysis nurse , you may wish to try traveling nursing jobs . If you are an

experienced specialty nurse, you may be able to take your pick of assignments. If you want to move to be a labor and delivery nurse , you’ll need some hands-on experience and continuing education for nurses before finding a new position.

10 | Nurses Work in a Stable Industry

By 2030, the baby boomer generation will have reached age 65. Up to 85% of older adults have at least one chronic health condition, and 60% have at least two. According to the BLS, nurses are in demand to care for a growing population of people with chronic disease. The expected job growth ranges from 6% for RNs to 40% for nurse practitioners

11 | Nurses Develop Transferable Career Skills

Nursing offers you the opportunity to adapt your professional life to fit your lifestyle. For example, you’ll find work in a variety of geographical locations and work environments. You may choose to work full time or part time, and may choose from shifts as short as four hours and as long as 12.

These skills can help you transition from clinical nursing to other options: nursing administration , nonprofit management in nursing , public health nursing , correctional facilities, or being a missionary nurse in clinics across the world.

12 | Nursing Grads Have Smoother New Hire Transitions

All nurses experience a transition as they move from an academic to a clinical setting after graduating as a nurse . For many nurses working in large teaching hospitals, this transition may be eased by the hospital’s one-year nurse residency programs designed to help new nurses successfully transition from school to various work settings for nurses

Although there is a nursing shortage across the U.S., it is still challenging to get a premium job. You can improve your success by working while you’re in school to gain nursing experience and accept internships. Nursing students who gain volunteer experience and professionally network while in nursing school also have an advantage when it’s time to apply for their first job.

13 | Nurses Collaborate With Different Healthcare Professionals

Nurses play a unique role in healthcare. They are the only consistent healthcare professionals with the patient at their bedside, so they can collaborate with healthcare teams to coordinate patient care and improve outcomes.

The bedside nurse is the hub of patient activity. They know the recommendations of each healthcare professional attending the patient. Nurses with strong organizational and critical thinking skills can make sure each knows how their recommendation affects the overall care plan.

14 | Nurses Receive Excellent Benefits

Hospitals, clinics, and doctors’ offices may offer excellent benefits to attract and keep qualified professionals. For example, a nurse’s median annual salary of $77,600 according to the BLS is well above $45,760, which is the average annual salary of all occupations.

Travel nursing may receive added benefits for the inconvenience of living and working in another city. These can include benefits to cover travel expenses and a stipend for housing, meals, and other bills.

Let’s encourage women to join financial firms that focus on gender diversity, with an inclusive culture and enable them to succeed and advance in their roles.

Investment is not at odds with gender equality

In 2018, entering the financial market for a woman represented a challenge and Pricila Franco de Almeida, Jr. Talent Acquisition Manager at Tribal, overcame it.

Although it was very interesting to work inside an investment firm, the environment in a startup makes you fall in love with the industry more thanks to the diversity and women empowerment.

For Pricila it is a very important thing to help people enter the financial markets. From a human resources point of view, this is changing in many companies “My mission”, says Pricila, “is to empower all women and show them that they are capable of doing what they set out to do, because sometimes they put limits on themselves. Today you can be whatever you want and have a higher salary”.

Women Should Seek Knowledge

Flora Moreira, Account Executive at Tribal, has a great love for languages, which is why she studied International Business.

For Moreira, getting to where she is now is sometimes complicated because the majority of Head of Sales are men in the sector.

However, this has not been an impediment to take a relevant role within the industry, because even though she is young and is questioned, she always behaves as a professional in order to ensure that the treatment is equitable and equal. Even though the numbers are not so good in the financial sector, we should not limit women and work on diversity and inclusion initiatives or groups.

From the 1990s to the 2000s, changes in the gender perspective

The financial sector is very broad and Tammie Pearson , Sr. Program Manager at Tribal, is well aware of that. Throughout her career, she has worked for well-known companies, but the road has not been easy, as being in a predominantly maledominated industry is not easy.
