Fytos Thrasyvoulou, who heads the association SYKAP, blamed all-inclusive hotel packages and the rapid growth of international brand chain food outlets and restaurants for the dire situation.

The Ministry of Health has prepared a long and detailed action plan, and has sent travel advice to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to advise travellers to and from the affected countries of West Africa to be careful and follow the guidelines.

Ryanair CEO Michael O` Leary has said that with the help of the Irish low-cost airline, Cyprus Airways could get back on a path of rapid growth with new roots and more flights, that would increase the number of its passengers to three million per year.

O` Leary met in Nicosia last month with the governments team responsible for finding a strategic investor for the troubled national air carrier.

He also met with the Communications Minister Marios Demetriades who said that Ryanair has submitted a proposal separate from the ongoing process aimed at finding a strategic investor.

“From Ryanair`s point of view there is a very exciting future for Cyprus Airways where I believe with the help of Ryan Air we could put Cyprus Airways and Cyprus` tourism back on a path of a very much renewed and rapid growth, with new roots, more flights and new jobs for pilots, cabin crew and engineers here in Cyprus” O` Leary told the press.

He explained that with the plan Ryanair has submitted to the Government of Cyprus, the company expects to grow from 500 thousand passengers last year, to about three million passengers over the next 3-4 years.

“As we explained to the Minister we think we can deliver that growth using Cyprus Airways. So it will be Cyprus Airways growing again from 700 thousand passengers this year to three million in the next few years,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tony Antoniou, ex chairman of the Board of Directors of Cyprus Airways, who resigned his post last month, has said that he left with a clear conscience, adding that there is no evidence of misappropriation on his part of company funds.

“MOVE WEEK” is an annual event and an integral part of the Now We Move Campaign.

A statement issued by the Cyprus Sports Organization says that the event aims at raising awareness among citizens about a healthy way of life and about working out.

The major goal is to raise the number of European citizens who work out by 100 million by 2020.

The Cyprus Sports Organization is the national coordinator of the event and has already called on other organizations, groups, institutions and bodies from a great spectrum of Cyprus life to join.

Platres and Episkopi receive fire trucks from SBA British Forces Cyprus completed their program of gifting fire trucks to the local community when the final two of the vehicles were donated to the villages of Platres and Episkopi last month.

In the past month the Bases have presented a total of six fire truck to the community to help the villages protect themselves during the dangerous summer fire season.

The trucks were handed over by Dr Phillip Rushbrook the Chief Officer of the bases.

At the presentation in Episkopi Pavlos Pouris, the Episkopi Community President explained that in the previous season when seven fires were burning in the area it took longer than usual to get help to put out a fire close to Episkopi village.

He said ‘We are grateful to the bases for this fire truck which will be a great help to our community in an emergency.’

He added ‘the gift strengthens the relationships between the bases and the Episkopi community; you will always have friends here.’

In Platres the final fire truck was accepted by Panayiotis Papadopoulos.

During the ceremony he said that the fire truck will be used for more than just helping with fires explaining that frequent land slides in winter blocked the roads and that the high pressure water jets on the fire truck will be used to quickly clear these obstructions.

He expanded on the close ties with the military throughout the years and thanked Dr Rushbrook for the much appreciated donation.

Present at both ceremonies was the Episkopi Bases fire station manger, Neophyto Neophtou who has organised training for volunteers from each of the six villages that have been given a fire truck.

During the Platres presentation he offered to help with further crew training if required.

He said ‘These fire trucks will save property, lives and money. Tackling a fire before it gets out of control is vital; these trucks give our local communities this capability.

MADVENT AGAIN

Friends’ Hospice For the second year running, the Madvent ticket sales for the daily prize-winning will be held to raise funds for The Friends’ Hospice in Paphos.

The prizes donated for last year’s event attracted ticket sales of €10,731 for the charity which provides palliative care, free of charge, for anyone in the region, regardless of nationality.

Since it relocated to its new premises at St George’s Polyclinic in the town, the Hospice has given specialised treatment to more than 100 patients suffering from conditions and diseases for which a cure is no longer possible.

Madvent is the brainchild of the owners of The Outlet Store group of shops in Chlorakas, Mesogi and Kolossi who, along with the Hospice’s support volunteers, canvas businesses to offer prizes of goods, travel, accommodation or hospitality. Winning ticket numbers are drawn each day during The Outlet Store sponsored programme on Rock FM. This year there are two ‘star’ prizes – Emirates tickets for two people to Dubai and accommodation at the magnificent Atlantis Hotel on The Palm, and Condor flights for two from Larnaca Airport to Berlin.

Other prizes vary from electrical goods to travel vouchers for B&B in a variety of hotels around Cyprus, cruises from Paphos Harbour, white-knuckle rides, as well as meals for two at many restaurants and tavernas.

House at centre of landmark Cyprus property case turned into pub THE OCCUPIED HOUSE of Greek Cypriot refugee Titina Loizidou is to be turned into a pub, according to reports from occupied Kyrenia.

The house was the centre of a landmark ruling in 1996 when Loizidou brought a case against Turkey alleging violation of her right to peacefully enjoy her property in the Turkish occupied northern part of the island.

The European Court of Human Rights found Turkey guilty of continuing human rights violations.

Turkey paid 1.12 million euros in compensation to Loizidou.

Havadis newspaper reports that the decision to convert the property into a pub was taken by Kemal Hifzioglu the current inhabitant of Loizidou’s house.

Hoax SMS irritates Central Bank

Revenue from tourism saw a welcome boost in June according to new figures.

The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) were forced to quash rumours earlier this month in relation to the viability of the Co-operative sector and the Bank of Cyprus were totally unfounded.

Revenues increased by €43,4 million in June - compared to the same month in 2013, while during the first half of the year, revenue increased by €81,1 million, according to the Statistical Service.

The CBS had to point out that the recapitalization of Bank of Cyprus was successfully completed recently.

On the basis of the results of the Passenger Survey, says the announcement of the Statistical Sevice, revenue from tourism reached €303,2 mn in June 2014 compared to €259,8 mn in the corresponding month of the previous year, recording an increase of 16.7%.

The Co-operative sector has been restructured and recapitalised without the participation of depositors and according to the adjustment program of Cyprus, there is an additional amount of €1bn for future capital needs, “says the CBC.

For the period January – June 2014 revenue from tourism is estimated to €778,7 mn compared to €697,6 mn in the corresponding period of 2013, recording an increase of 11.6%.

As regards tourist arrivals, the Statistical Service announced that they reached 342.221 in June 2014 compared to 308.219 in the corresponding month of 2013.

The announcement came following a complaint by Chairman of Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission Demetra Kalogerou of hoax SMS, presenting sending a warning of a new haircut of the deposits in Cyprus.

he awards ceremony for the Competition of the International Union of Architects (UIA) on: “UTOPIA AND / OR HAPINESS” was recently held in Durban, South Africa where the Master Program in Landscape Architecture of the Neapolis University of Pafos received an honorary award.

The event took place during the World Congress of UIA 2014 and the award was received on behalf of the Neapolis University by Dr. Julia Georgi, Associated Professor of Landscape Architecture.

All Jury Members of the International Architecture Competition of Ideas 2014 (UIA) as well as Mr. Vassilis Sgoutas, former President of UIA, were present at the award ceremony. The Architectural Competition of Ideas 2014 was undertaken and completed by the Turkish Union of Architects.

This Month in Cyprus History

Preparations for the 2014 Cyprus Rally are entering the final stages, as the moment when the first car will set its tyres off the starting ramp and into the city of Nicosia The Cyprus Rally has been held yearly since 1970.. Back then, it was a long, rough, tough and ultimately destructive event, with unattainable average speeds and controls placed to extract maximum time penalties. However, it was efficiently organised and overseas visitors enjoyed the warm hospitality and genuine friendliness of the event.

Despite suffering a two-year gap (1974/75) in the aftermath of the Turkish invasion, the rally quickly climbed the European coefficients, reaching coefficient 3 in 1978.

1982 saw the Cyprus Rally promoted to the top level in Europe and it went on to become one of the elite when coefficient 20 was devised in 1988. From then, the goal was the World Championship.

The Cyprus organisers were thrown in at the deep end when the rally was taken into the WRC as a lastminute replacement for the China Rally in May 2000, leaving them just four months in which to put everything together.

This year the Cyprus Rally will be part of the European Rally Championship as well as the Middle-East Rally Championship, becoming the only rally to ever host two FIA sanctioned events at once, a press release said on Monday.

The 2014 Cyprus Rally is planned to take place from the 19th of September to the 21st.

The crews will have to drive through fifteen demanding yet spectacular special tracks, totalling 773 km.

Europe offers to establish

GAZA-CYPRUS SEA ROUTE YNET News in Israel has reported that an unnamed European source told Palestinian media outlets that Europe was willing to establish a sea route between the Gaza Strip and Larnaca – meant for both people and merchandise.

According to the initiative, European observers would be present both in Gaza and Larnaca in order to prevent security violations.

The source noted that Europe was interested in finding a comprehensive, permanent solution in order to save from having to rehabilitate the Strip every few years.

The Gaza Strip, sandwiched between Israel and Egypt, has been a recurring flashpoint in the IsraelPalestinian conflict for years.

Israel occupied Gaza in the 1967 Middle East war and only pulled its troops and settlers out in 2005.

Israel considered this the end of the occupation, but it still exercises control over most of Gaza’s borders, waters and airspace. Egypt controls Gaza’s southern border.

Meanwhile, Ambassador of Palestine to Cyprus, Walid Hasan, appealed to the international community for “international protection to be provided for the Palestinian civilian population, throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territories”.

“The tragic and continuous increase in the number of casualties is reflective of the brutality and indiscriminate nature of Israel’s ongoing onslaught against the Palestinian population in Gaza, in grave breach of all norms and rules of international humanitarian law and human rights law,” he said.

1950 A Royal Air Force Brigand fighter-bomber crashed on Nicosia airport, two hours before a Battle of Britain display was due to start. There were no injuries.

1953 Five more earth tremors have shook Cyprus, the last accompanied by a sound like an explosion. The few inhabitants of Paphos who had ventured back into their shattered houses ran out into the streets when they heard the mysterious sound. Tremors have been continual in Cyprus this month, when two intense quakes flattened two villages in ten seconds and killed at least 35 people. Hundreds of homeless, mostly from villages in the Paphos and Limassol area, have since been living in the open 1996 Police arrested six foreigners in connection with threats that terrorists would attack the French embassy in Nicosia. A Police Spokesman said that four Pakistanis and two Syrians were arrested.

Sickening animal abuse as dog hanged from tree in horrific case of cruelty

ANOTHER SHOCKING ACT of animal cruelty has been exposed after a dog was found hanged from a tree in the Limassol district.

The Animal Party of Cyprus said that the dog was discovered by a resident of Kyperounta who called police after making the gruesome discovery.

“Our society is ailing. Recent incidents of animal violence are an indication that we don’t mend our ways,” the party said in a press release.

In June in international animal rights protest was launched after a dog was thrown into a hotel machine used for crushing rubbish and later died.

Paws Dog Shelter PAWS DOG SHELTER VETERANS The dogs featured this month are all older and have been at the shelter for a considerable length of time. The advantages of homing an older dog are many. You know exactly what you are getting in relation to size and temperament. At this stage of life, the dog has been socialized with other dogs, and people. Seniors are more mellow and calmer than younger dogs and know how to wait more patiently. Because they are more focused, they are often easier to train than younger dogs who are easily distracted.

One thing is for certain – the older dog’s gratitude at having a chance to give and receive love is unbounded and they become a member of the family very quickly.

Betty Boo is a medium sized, female, black with white, pointer cross breed, who came to the shelter back in 2003. Although she is now approximately 13 years of age, Betty Boo still enjoys going for a walk and gets on well with other dogs.

Spindle is a brown and white, male, pointer and is 10 years of age. He was brought to the shelter when he was a few months old. Spindle suffered from rickets when he was younger and has bowed legs as a result. He is currently responding well to therapeutic dog massage. He is quiet and good with other dogs.

Pebbles is a small/medium female pointer cross breed. She is black and white in colour and is a quiet and shy girl. She is 8 years old and came into the shelter when she was just a youngster. In the summertime she loves to cool off by splashing in a little bath of water.

Gandalf is an 8 year old, male black and white pointer. He has now been at the shelter for 7 years. Although he loves his walks, he is not very tolerant of cats.

Gandalf is affectionate, likes getting attention and cuddles.

ALL FOUR DOGS ARE NEUTERED AND VACCINATED.

SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT Do you remember the catch phrase “and now for something completely different” from the zany comedy programme called ‘Monty Python’s Flying Circus’? Well on Saturday, 18th October 2014 the PAWS Dog Shelter team in conjunction with Judith Boundy, proprietor of ‘Here & Now’, are indeed going to be doing something completely different. That afternoon, at 2.00 for 2.30 p.m. a fashion show with a twist will be held at the PAWS Dog Shelter.

The clothing supplied by ‘Here & Now’, modelled at the event and available for purchase will be UK high street fashion, with labels that you recognise and at prices that you will love. 10% of all purchases made at, and as a result of the event, will be kindly donated to the PAWS charity by Judith.

Spectators are welcome to walk round the shelter after the event and there will be people on hand to assist with enquiries about dogs and answer questions about the shelter and charity in general.

ALL CREDIT TO OUR VOLUNTEERS You may be surprised to hear that it is the volunteers at PAWS Dog shelter who are the backbone of this charitable organisation. Without them and their valuable contribution, the shelter would be unable to operate and the resident dogs would suffer. The total number of volunteers out-number staff at the shelter by more than twenty to one.

When PAWS volunteers are asked why they give up their time so willingly, the invariable answer is ‘because of the dogs’. Surprisingly some volunteers have never in their life owned a dog, usually because of work or family commitments but at the shelter everyone gets to sample the affection that dogs give. That includes volunteers who clean, feed, groom, walk or socialise the dogs. Did you know that petting a dog can reduce stress and anxiety and also lift your mood?

Come along and observe PAWS helpers in action any morning of the week. This way you would get a ‘feel’ for the organisation and see what goes on at the kennels. If you felt comfortable, you could assist an experienced volunteer in some of the tasks that they do without making any longer term commitment.

If you wanted to take things to the next stage and become a volunteer you would be more than welcome. We understand that some people cannot make a commitment to volunteer on the same day each week as they have obligations elsewhere. Speak to us about it and we can come to an arrangement that is convenient for you. Similarly if you only come to Cyprus for a few weeks of the year, you could still make a valuable contribution.
