Finally implementing the longawaited health service – Cyprus is the only EU member without one – was part of the deal the government signed with the troika of international lenders as part of the bailout in March 2013.

The principle behind the new NHS will be “fair distribution of costs, social solidarity, support of economically vulnerable groups, free choice of doctor and medical services”, Minister of Health Philippos Patsalis has said.

care – including all visits to specialty doctors and medication; and the third stage, on July 1, 2016, will see all aspects of the NHS implemented, Patsalis explained.

A gradual implementation of the service is expected to begin in July next year, with the first stage will including primary healthcare services – visits to personal doctors and paediatricians; the second stage, starting on January 1, 2016, will cover out-of-hospital health-

The NHS will ensure its financial sustainability while providing universal coverage. The system will be financed by contributions based on income, with employees paying 2.1% of their total income, employers contributing a higher

rate of 2.2%, and the government contributing 4.5%. The policies of the Ministry of Health on pricing and reimbursement of medical goods and services, including those related to pharmaceutical expenditure, will be revised in agreement with programme partners to contain projected spending levels under NHS. Currently, the public heath sector system consists of eight hospitals and a number of primary health care centres around the country.

EU begins to unravel as France calls for Brussels downgrade

Campaign on consumer rights launched, flights the number one complaint

French President Francois Hollande says the EU has become too remote and should scale back its role, amid huge Eurosceptic election gains.

“Europe has to be simple, clear, to be effective where it is needed and to withdraw from where it is not necessary,” Holland said. His words will only cause misery to supporters of the European Union, as the continent appears more troubled and divided than at any time since the Second World War, with the recent financial crisis having severely shaken the bloc to its very foundation.

The European Commission has been running an information campaign in Cyprus to encourage consumers to learn more about their rights.

Economic growth and prosperity have fallen dramatically, unemployment is rising and for the past few years Brussels has been under permanent siege from its critics - who say that the institution is divorced from the real world.

The campaign highlighted consumer rights such as the right to have defective goods repaired or replaced, the right to return something bought on-line during the first 14 days after purchase, the right to receive helpful advice in their country and language in case they have a dispute with a trader from another EU country and the right to get true and complete statements on the nature of products.

Eurosceptic and far-right parties seized ground in elections to the European parliament last month, in what France’s PM called a “political earthquake”.

The campaign has also been running in the countries where awareness of consumer rights is low.

While the French National Front and UK Independence Party both took first place, the three big centrist blocs in parliament all lost seats. A central theme, as outlined by UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage is immigration. His party wants an end to further political and economic integration and disagrees with the free movement of labour - a central principle of the EU. His hostility to Brussels has stuck a chord with the British public. The True Finns in Finland, Danish Peoples Party in Denmark, Front National in France and the Freedom Party in the Netherlands have similar concerns. The outcome means a greater say for those who want to cut back the EU’s powers, or abolish it completely. Meanwhile, the British Prime Minister David Cameron has rejected calls to bring forward an in/out European Union membership referendum after his party was beaten into third place in European elections by the anti-EU UKIP party. 2  Issue 13 • 13th June to 11th July, 2014

ECC Director Elena Papachristoforou said that the transport sector is regularly the number one source of cross-border complaints, accounting for 28% of all complaints. The sector included complaints by air passengers regarding delays/cancellation of flights, loss of luggage and car rentals. 46% of the 2013 complaints referred to products and services. Furthermore she said that during 2013, ECC Cyprus staff responded to 443 information requests from Cypriots and other EU consumers. As regard the nature of the complaints, she said that 46% referred to product and services, 32% to delivery (delivery of the wrong product or failure in delivery). During the conference it was pointed out that only 1 in five Cypriots use the internet for their purchases whereas in the EU the percentage is 45%, ie. one in two citizens use the internet to buy products, to book flights etc.

Minister predicts 8 percent rise in tourism this year Minister of Tourism Giorgos Lakkotrypis has said he is cautiously optimistic about tourist arrivals in 2014, noting that arrivals could increase by up to 8%. Lakkotrypis said that arrivals in April marked an increase of 12% year on year, adding that “signs are encouraging.”

New speed Cameras on the way

“Our strategy is to make sure we maintain arrivals from mature markets such as Britain, and we focus on emerging markets such as Ukraine and Russia to increase arrivals,” he said. Lakkotrypis said following an agreement signed with TUI, one of Britain`s largest tour operator, Cyprus would be able to maintain arrivals and avert a decline in the number of tourists from the UK. The United Kingdom has been traditionally Cyprus` biggest tourist market with 900,000 to one million tourist arrivals annually. “We had a dramatic reduction in the past few years and our strategy is to maintain tourist arrivals before restoring growth. It seems that we are succeeding,” he added. Asked about the winter tourist season, the Minister said the agreement with TUI mainly concerns the winter season from November 2014 to March 2015 on a three-year outlook, adding that the Ministry aims at signing similar agreements with other tourist operators. “We are on track to start, at last, addressing the problem of seasonality,” he concluded. Last year TUI, which is one of the world’s leading leisure and travel companies expressed full confidence in Cyprus saying they would expand their operations to the island in the coming years. Travel giant TUI operates in over 180 countries with more than 30 million customers in 31 key source markets and already brings 500,000 tourists to Cyprus annually with their Thompson, TUI Nordic, First Choice and TUI Germany operations. On a visit to Cyprus last April, John Lundgren, the Deputy Chief Executive of TUI told representatives from the tourism industry that he was convinced that growth in tourism would mark growth in the future of the Cyprus economy. 4  Issue 13 • 13th June to 11th July, 2014

Cyprus is set to clamp down on speeding with a new network of CCTV cameras expected to be installed soon on the island’s roads. The new camera network will be fully operational by February 2015. Two fixed speed cameras have already been installed on a main street in Nicosia in a bid to cut down on so-called ‘boy racers’, with over 1,000 thousand violations being reported over a single weekend last month. Previous efforts at speed camera technology failed after shoddy maintenance and electrical faults plagued the former system, which is now redundant. However, the Justice and Communications Ministries claimed that the old camera system managed to reduce road accidents by 35 percent whilst in operation. Even though there has been a significant drop in road deaths, police blame speeding as one of the leading causes of accidents on the island. In 2013 the total number of fatal crashes in Cyprus was 41, marking a 19.6 percent decrease over the previous year, with 44 fatalities, which denotes a 13.73 percent drop relative to 2012.

Bank returns to profit as restrictions eased

ª Shop opening hours extended Council of Ministers decided to extend until August 31 tourist shop opening hours under the current arrangements. Opening hours on Sunday begin from 10:30 until 19:30 with the exception of the areas of Famagusta, where shops can be open from 07:00 to 23:00 pm at the proposal of Mayors and other local stake holders, the release writes. This differentiation is justified by the fact that the same opening hours were implemented in the past, as well as by the conditions of the area.

ª Deposits up, loans down An increase was recorded in total deposits in April while total loans showed a decrease, according to the Central Bank of Cyprus` Monetary Financial Institutions (MFIs) deposits and loans statistics for April, which are included in the May 2014 edition of Monetary and Financial Statistics. The Central Bank notes that total deposits in April 2014 increased by €266.3 million, as compared with a decline of €247.2 in March 2014.

ª Property tax The government must bring before the Parliament a bill reforming immovable property tax and another one introducing the Guaranteed Minimum Income before the end of June. The Parliamentary Committee on financial and budgetary affairs has set priorities for the implementation of all prior actions required for the disbursement of the fifth bailout tranche, based on a document sent by the Finance Ministry.

ª 25th anniversary of bicommunal dialogue celebrated The 25th anniversary of the bicommunal dialogue, under the auspices of the Slovak Embassy, was celebrated last month at an event organized by the Embassy at Ledra Palace Hotel at the buffer zone. The event was attended by Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot party representatives, Ambassadors and other diplomats.

THE Bank of Cyprus had returned to profits in the first quarter of 2014 after seven consecutive loss-making quarters. The profit from continuing operation was €72 million and the profit after tax totalled €31 million. At the same time the Bank announced that loans in arrears for more than 90 days declined for the first time following sixteen consecutive quarterly increases. Bad loans totaled €12.7 million by the end of March, down by 1.9% from the previous quarter. Provisions for impairment of those loans from January to March were €146 million, down from €229 million in the previous one. Meanwhile, all restrictions in domestic transactions and payments have been lifted and opening of new bank accounts is once again allowed.

ª Gas is the key in peace talks The Turkish Cypriot chief negotiator has played down the prospect of a quick solution in peace talks, warning that the discovery of natural gas in the region was possibly more of an obstacle than of help. Greek and Turkish Cypriots re-launched peace talks in February, the latest of many attempts to heal the wounds of a conflict that saw Turkey invade in 1974, followed by the island’s division.

ª Non Performing Loans Bank of Cyprus CEO John Hourican has said that non performing loans are stabilising. Hourican assured that the Bank is more aggressive in pursuing the `high end` borrowers and compassionate when it comes to `lower end` borrowers, stressing however the need to amend current legislation on the matter. He spoke of the need “to have confidence in the system as a whole”. Banking, he pointed out, “is about confidence”. Cyprus, he stressed, “needs to return to having confidence in its banking system”. At the same time he reiterated that BoC is “making good progress”, noting that “we have a clear repatriation of overseas capital agenda going on”.

Cyprus one year ago agreed with the EU and the IMF on a €10 billion bailout which featured an unprecedented haircut on deposits over €100,000 to recapitalize the island`s troubled banks. Bank of Cyprus absorbed the good part of Laiki Bank which has been wound down. Issue 13 • 13th June to 11th July, 2014  5

Derrick and Rebecca are the new owners of the family run Blue Olive Bistro in Coral Bay. Derrick is the chef and Rebecca and their daughter look after things front of house. Derrick worked as a chef in the army for 28 years and more recently was the General Manager at Aphrodite’s Rock Brewing Company. The bistro has undergone some subtle changes to give it a more personal and homely feel, with lace table runners and 2 comfy sofas where you can relax with a coffee and maybe play a game of chess or backgammon. The Blue Olive is open 7 days a week, starting at 9.00 am with breakfast. You can choose from a full English or one of their popular breakfast rolls. For those who wish to “get out” quickly they also offer a continental style breakfast with croissant or pain au chocolate. At lunchtime the popular gourmet salad counter is a must with accompaniments such as home made quiche, frittata, fresh salmon fillet or Derrick’s speciality cooked gammon. There is also a selection of hot food, the steak and ale pie is one of the most popular choices, served with homemade chunky chips and gravy. Wherever possible all foods are made fresh from locally sourced ingredients, therefore at busy times your patience is appreciated.

Over the last two years Val and Brian have raised over €10,000 for various charities through their well supported Charity Theme Nights.

A dinner menu is available on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, this is changed weekly. All day and into the evening on Friday there is a fish and chip special; mini cod loin in real ale batter, chips, mushy peas and a slice of bread and butter for €5.95. Sunday lunch remains one of the most popular choices and bookings are strongly advised.

Why not give Val or Brian a ring on 99 076 831 to find out when they are having a Theme Night or indeed to make a reservation – you’re guaranteed a huge welcome.

In addition to the above you can also come along Monday through to Saturday for a delicious cream tea consisting of, scones, jam, butter, fresh cream, strawberries and a pot of tea or coffee. This is extremely good value at €5.50 per person.

Shopping is a fun pastime for many people and if it’s for shopping in the island’s largest and most modern mall the number of consumers keeps growing. We are talking about Kings Avenue Mall, which offers to the visitors of Paphos the opportunity of combining shopping and fun. Kings Avenue Mall, in its first 8 months of operation (since November 2013), has managed to win the hearts of Cypriots and tourists, with more than 2 million visitors having visited already. With its impressive exterior and stylish interior, as well as its vast selection of shops, it leaves each visitor with the best of impressions. Shoppers will find an entire world of choices, with well-known brands for men, women and children, home decorations, technology and electronics, a supermarket, a 6-screen cinema, a play area for children, an arcade, as well as the largest food court with popular world-known restaurants and cafeterias.

Kings Avenue Mall, apart from being an oasis for consumers, is a project worth more than €170 million, and has offered a boost to the economy of Paphos. Covering an area of 103,000 square meters, there are more than 1,000 people employed in the Mall, a significant contribution to the employment of the active workforce of the district of Paphos. Moreover, Kings Avenue Mall is contributing to the enhancement and upgrade of the tourism product not only of Paphos, but of the entire island of Cyprus. It is worth noting that various archaeological findings were unearthed during the construction of the Mall, which have been put on display in a specially designed outdoor area of the Mall. From the excavation it became apparent that there were baths in the area already from the Hellenistic Era, with continuous use after the necessary conversions during the Roman period. So, if you are looking for an ideal escape to Paphos, Kings Avenue Mall offers the ideal solution and day out for shopping, entertainment and leisure. 8  Issue 13 • 13th June to 11th July, 2014

Man gets three months in prison for bird trapping THE Dhekelia Sovereign Bases Area Court sentenced a local man to three months in prison last month, after being found guilty of bird trapping and poaching – it is the first time a custodial sentence has been passed for such a crime.

Financial crisis sees increase in smokers

SBA police spokesman Andreas Pitsillides said a search of the mans house in May 2013 unearthed 182 songbirds, five partridges, 14 quails and seven hares. “This is the first time in the history of the SBA that someone has received a prison sentence for this type of crime. It is a serious offence for which the SBA has a zero tolerance policy,” Pitsillides said. The bases claimed in April that 132 people had been convicted for bird trapping over the past four years. The announcement came after Prince Charles demanded action to stop the annual ‘barbaric slaughter’ of half a million migrating songbirds in British Sovereign Areas of Cyprus. In response to the Prince Charles letter, the SBA said they had: “allocated significant resources in its efforts to tackle this illegal activity. Over the last four years, 132 people have been convicted within the SBAs for mist-netting offences”. SBA authorities added that they continue to work closely with conservationist groups to tackle “this abhorrent illegal activity”. 10  Issue 13 • 13th June to 11th July, 2014

The number of smokers in Cyprus has risen due to stress caused by the financial crisis, a new report shows. According to data presented by the Ministry of Health, in Cyprus 38.1% of men and 10.5% of women smoke. Ministry of Health said that Cyprus holds first place in the EU for smoking and also for smoking-related cardiac arrests. According to the data, although many heart patients quit the habit, they start smoking again after a few years. The smokers who suffer a heart attack and continue to smoke have three times more chance of a fatal attack in the next ten years, compared to those who stop smoking. In Cyprus, 23.5% of patients continue to smoke after a heart-related incident, while in Europe only 17.2% do so. In Cyprus, in 2012 there were 2,112 deaths from heart disease, 394 from respiratory system ailments, and 932 from neoplasms, all tobaccorelated.

First Pride Festival a great success Cyprus first Pride Parade took place last month in Nicosia, as the culmination of the 1st Pride Festival. It is estimated that between 4-5 thousand people attended the event. Organisers ACCEPT LGBTI Cyprus said the event gathered the support of many organisations and personalities, and has attracted the interest of local and foreign media. . It took place 16 years after homosexuality was finally decriminalised in Cyprus but activists say Cyprus still lags far behind its European Union peers in terms of rights for gay people, and has been slow in pursuing legislation on civil partnerships. The aim of the Parade was to promote equal rights for all, joined by people who support equality and human rights without exceptions. The Parade began in Nicosia`s central square and ended at the Municipal Gardens with a music show.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden was in Cyprus last month to help push the ongoing negotiations for the reunification of the island. The last time an American vice president visited the island was in 1962 when Lyndon B Johnson addressed the Cypriot parliament.

THE AUCTIONEERS LOT Our resident expert is Benjamin Terence Green a licensed auctioneer and valuation professional with over 30 years experience. Ben currently holds regular Friday auctions at Hammers Auction House Chloraka in Paphos.

Dear Ben

Dear Ben

A near neighbour was recently a victim of a burglary. After considerable hassle with the insurance company she received a fraction of the value of the items stolen. This was despite her having never made a claim in over 10 years of being a customer of the same insurance company. In the case of certain items she received ......NOTHING! After we moved here from the UK we had several antiques and paintings shipped over to our new home here in Cyprus. I am now worried should we fall victim to a burglary we will have the same problems in regard to any potential insurance claim. Can you advise? Andrea, Paphos

When my aunt passed away she left me this vase in her will. It was always something I admired from my childhood. My aunt lived in Bristol and she always told me it was a gift from my uncle. Can you tell me something more about it?

Dear Andrea I am not an insurance broker, I am however a valuation specialist employed by insurance companies and private individuals. Alfred Abraham Hammer & Co offer a full range of general and specialist valuation services. Sadly your friend is not alone in this situation. My professional services for insurance valuations and loss adjustment have seen a startling increase since the start of 2014. The major cause of disquiet tends to result from people not having adequate cover or having no cover at all. In many cases people thought they were insured for certain items and then when trying to claim were informed they were not. Most people just don’t check their policy conditions when taking out a home contents policy. It too often becomes the case of not knowing what you are not covered for until you try making a claim. What most people forget is your insurer will have set a limit to the maximum amount that they will pay out on any one claim. The insurer will normally also limit the amount they will pay out on specific items covered in the policy. Check your insurance policy does it say a maximum for example, on your jewellery? Does it then state additional cover ‘As list provided’? Have you made a separate list? Let me explain, suppose your insurance company has set a maximum payout for any one claim of 35,000 Euros. They will split that amount across the whole claim with a ceiling limit on each of the individual parts that make up that claim i.e Jewellery -maximum payout 250 Euros. Any claim exceeding that amount must be provided and supported with a valuation certificate on a separate list prior to the policy being accepted or at least prior to the making of the claim. This means your £20,000 collection of original oil paintings unless it has been insured on a separate list may only result in a maximum payout of 250 Euros! Andrea , I am not saying you have a collection of oil paintings worth £20 000.You well might have! One thing I am saying is if you have not had a recent professional valuation and have that accepted and attatched as part of your policy. Then you will only have a collection worth what your insurance company wants to pay out! If you or any of my readers out there wish to find out about the valuation services we offer at Alfred Abraham Hammer & Co call me on 99931123. Our advice and verbal valuations are always offered FREE OF CHARGE. Hope that helps Ben

Sandra G Pissouri

Dear Sandra What you are the owner of is a Royal Doulton flambe vase signed by Noke. Charles John Noke (1858 - 1941), was an English pottery designer and artist who primarily worked for Royal Doulton He is noted for producing many different ranges of pottery using differing techniques and was also hugely influential in helping Doulton establish itself as a world leader. After he joined Doulton in 1889 he became the Art Director and was able to affect all aspects of production at the Burslem site and in doing so instigated a revolution in both design and production turning Doulton into the leading art manufacturer of the age. Noke’s greatest achievement was the creation of a range of experimental transmutation glazed wares. These ranges, the Flambes, Titanian, Sung, Chinese Jade, Chang and Crystalline represent one of the greatest contributions to studio pottery made by a large British manufacturer in this century. He is also well known for launching the HN figurines (named after Harry Nixon who was in charge of the figure painting department). This naming convention for figurines still endures today. This particular vase is early 20th century and should be insured for no less than 250 Euros. Hope that helps Ben

Ministers back in First Class Ministers and senior civil servants will again enjoy the benefits of first class travel, which can cost over 1000 euros per seat to EU destinations, for a single journey. Government spokesman Victoras Papadopoulos confirmed that a ban on first class travel had been lifted for flights over 5 –hours. In December it was announced that hundreds of civil servants and politicians that had enjoyed first class air journeys to avoid indignity of travelling standard class, would be forced to experience the shoulder squeeze of economy as part of cost-cutting measures being taken by the government. Since then, civil servants and politicians, including cabinet ministers, have had to fly in economy class when travelling within Europe. Exceptions only applied to the President and House Speaker Yiannakis Omirou.

Also in local sport, APOEL Nicosia FC were crowned local champions after defeating Limassol FC AEL 0-1. APOEL finished the season with a league double after clinching the cup title earlier this month. This is APOEL`s 23rd championship title in its history. Both APOEL and AEL will participate in the Champions League qualifiers 2014-2015. The match was a replay of an interrupted one on May 17th, when a football player of APOEL was injured by a firecracker, thrown reportedly by an AEL fan.

George Michaelides & Emily Christodoulou

1935: The development of Cyprus and the importance of preserving its historic monuments were subjects dealt with at a meeting at the Mansion House, London, yesterday. The Lord Mayor presided and he was supported by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister (Secretary of State for the Colonies), and Lord Mersey (chairman of the Cyprus Committee). 2008: House prices rose nearly 20 percent in 2007 despite central bank efforts to curb them, but analysts expect the pace of growth to slacken in 2008. 2008: Forty-two illegal immigrants sailing in a fishing boat have been caught by police after they were caught off the Northern Cyprus coast. The Captain of the boat and his assistant were also caught seven miles off the Karpaz peninsula. 2008: The first signs of another boiling summer are being felt nationwide as the mercury has already climbed to 40C in the capital. The Director of the Meteorological Service Kyriacos Theofilou, said that the temperature is five degrees higher than normal for this time of year, with the normal level being around 35C. 2009: Local health officials reported two new confirmed cases of the swine flu, or the H1N1 virus, bringing the number of confirmed cases in Cyprus to eight. A 24-year-old Cypriot male nurse and a 19-year-old tourist from the UK are said to have been admitted to hospital. 2009: Cyprus police officers have been out in force stopping drivers to make it clear to them that drink-driving or other offences will not be tolerated. Attention was paid to those driving in an anti-social, careless and inconsiderate manner. According to the police statement, 86 drivers were stopped for speeding, 39 not wearing seat belts, 28 for noisy exhaust pipes, 24 violations of the registration plates, 14 for hands free driving, 6 for non-use of crash helmets, 4 for careless and dangerous driving, 10 for driving through red traffic lights, 6 for driving without a safety certificate, 8 uncertified vehicles, 6 driving under the influence of alcohol and the remaining 40 other minor traffic offences. 2010: The recent rains may heave cheered up farmers across the island, but more water cuts are on the way. Environment Minister Michalis Polinikis has said that water cuts will resume next week and be reviewed in a few weeks. The minister urged consumers as to show understanding saying “It must be understood by all that water waste must be stopped.”

The two talented young dance students from Young Stars took part in the European Street Dance Championships in Germany last month. Great results for George & Emily The talented pair reached the under 12’s Duo semifinals and George was awarded 3rd place in the under 12’s Advance Solo.

2013: A total of 70.000 tourists more than the winter of 2012 are expected to visit Cyprus this coming winter, Tourism Minister George Lakkotrypis has said. The Minister noted that five foreign airlines have included Cyprus in their routes for winter 2013. These air carriers, that will cover eight countries and will fly to seventeen different destinations are Ryanair, Wizz Air, Norwegian, EasyJet and British Airways. Their routes include new destinations in countries such as Germany, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, Lithuania, Poland and Italy.

Former top cop goes to Kings Avenue Mall uncover Hellenistic and Roman-era High Court after sacking Excavations aqueduct and system of bath houses.

Former police chief Michalis Papageorgiou has challenged his dismissal by President Anastasiades. Papageorgiou filed a case in the High Court saying that the decision for his dismissal following ugly clashes between rival soccer fans in Nicosia was made without a prior investigation and before he was given the right to be heard. President Nicos Anastasiades fired Papageorgiou in March, a day after far right extremists from ELAM party caused serious incidents at an event in Limassol, which was addressed by former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. Papageorgiou also claimed that the Minister of Interior gave the president inadequate and inaccurate information. In a separate case filed in the district court Papageorgiou claimed that the President lied about the reasons for his dismissal.

EXCAVATIONS east of the Kings Avenue Mall in Paphos have uncovered a series of clay pipes, speculated to be a part of a Hellenistic and Roman-era aqueduct and system of bath houses. Efstathios Raptou, an Antiquities Department official told the Cyprus News Agency that although no amphorae or statues were found, the findings were of great importance in terms of the topography of Paphos, indicating that the ancient city was far higher above sea level that originally thought. The Antiquities Department also believes that it was possible the whole structure was decorated with murals that were destroyed centuries ago. The system of pipes appeared to have been used to move water from different directions in the nearby hills to a series of tanks at the centre of the complex. A total of four tanks were discovered, one of which was intact measuring nine metres in length, 4.7 metres wide and 1.65 in height, like a small bathing pool. The lower part of the ‘tank’ was embedded in the rock face. A second, smaller tank at a higher level, which was connected to the other one by one of the clay pipes, was largely destroyed. The state of the largest of the four tanks – vertically split in two – suggested the baths may have been abandoned at some stage and assigned some other use.

Zacharias Chrysostomou, the Director of Cyprus Police Academy, beacame the new Chief of the Police last month.

Climate change points to bleak future for Cyprus Fragments of marble coverings, mosaic flooring, and wall paintings were also evident at the site. The remaining archaeological material uncovered did not suggest any residential use. The antiquities department posits that the baths were in continuous use throughout the Hellenistic period more than 300 years BC and may have fallen out of use gradually during Roman times.

NEW research carried out by the Cyprus Institute confirms that the region’s weather in the near future will be much drier and warmer. The Institute notes that by the end of the century the very hot days and nights during the summer will be up to two months longer. Forecasts become even bleaker when the average annual rainfall expected to drop significantly and not cover needs in drinking and irrigation water. The higher temperatures and diminishing water reserves mean that the cultivation of grains will disappear, the need for air conditioning will increase and thus electricity consumption, with detrimental effects on health, especially respiratory and cardiac conditions. The Cyprus Institute has been carrying out research programmes to record and analyze world climate changes and their consequences, and also suggests ways to address the phenomenon and adapt to the new facts. 26  Issue 13 • 13th June to 11th July, 2014

The Antiquities discovered during construction of the Kings Avenue Mall have been carefully restored and relocated at the back of the Mall available for visitors to view Bathing played a major part in ancient Roman culture and society. Bathing was one of the most common daily activities in Roman culture, and was practiced across a wide variety of social classes. Though many contemporary cultures see bathing as a very private activity conducted in the home, bathing in Rome was a communal activity. Some of the earliest descriptions of western bathing practices came from Greece. The Greeks began bathing regimens that formed the foundation for modern spa procedures. These Aegean people utilized small bathtubs, wash basins, and foot baths for personal cleanliness. The earliest such findings are the baths in the palace complex at Knossos, Crete, and the luxurious alabaster bathtubs excavated in Akrotiri, Santorini; both date from the mid-2nd millennium BC. They established public baths and showers within their gymnasium complexes for relaxation and personal hygiene. Greek mythology specified that certain natural springs or tidal pools were blessed by the gods to cure disease. Around these sacred pools, Greeks established bathing facilities for those desiring healing. Supplicants left offerings to the gods for healing at these sites and bathed themselves in hopes of a cure.

PAWS SHELTER DOGS LOOKING FOR HOMES Chester was found 18 months ago by one of our volunteers. He is a lovely large dog, quite lively but with a great nature. He loves walks, playing with his ball and the company of other dogs. Chester is tan and white in colour. He is fully vaccinated and has been neutered. He is 18 months old and is really desperate to find his forever home. Gandalf is eight years old and has spent most of that time at the shelter He is a gentle, medium sized black and white dog and loves one to one attention. He is good with other dogs, loves walks and playing fetch. Gandalf is also now quite happy to sit and watch all the other dogs in his group play, whilst he relaxes. He is also fully vaccinated and neutered. Please help us find these two dogs loving homes.

101 Things To Do At PAWS Dog Shelter Are you interested in making a difference to the local community and simultaneously helping animal welfare? As most residents in Cyprus know, a problem still exists with stray and unwanted dogs. You could become one of the people working towards a solution and join a network of volunteers striving to make our part of the world safer and more humane for some of our canine friends. You don’t have to be an animal expert to help out at PAWS shelter. You just need to have time to spare in the mornings and the desire to help. You would make the jobs of everyone working for our dogs a little easier by lending a helping hand. Do not worry if you have never owned a dog or even if you are not comfortable being around dogs. There are a surprising number of other ways in which you could contribute.

Chester

So what kind of ‘jobs’ need to be done at PAWS shelter? The straight forward answer is that there are many and just not enough time or people to do them all. We require help with maintaining the compound including: repairing of fences, gates & doors, filling in holes, cement-work, painting, spreading stones in the compounds, adding shading, gardening, pruning, strimming, weeding, cleaning vehicles and maintaining plumbing. Although that sounds like a lot of work, not all these tasks need to be done at the same time so if you could lend a hand with ANY of them, please contact us on the number shown below. Simon, who is in charge of maintenance, would be very grateful. We also need assistance with maintaining the cleanliness of the public areas such as the office, tea area and toilets. At the heart of the compound there is also a separate area known as the ‘doggy kitchen’. This is where the dog food is prepared and distributed and which also requires to be kept meticulously clean.

Gandalf

There is a small second hand shop located at the shelter where people bring donations which require to be sorted, arranged and displayed. Assistance with this would be appreciated. At PAWS Dog Shelter we constantly strive to maintain the highest possible standards of cleanliness in order to provide an environment suitable for our resident dogs. Their health and well-being is of utmost importance. All volunteers, no matter which tasks they elect to do, contribute towards our objectives. If you enjoy the company, exuberance and affection that dogs and puppies give, then perhaps you would like to volunteer to work with the dogs one morning a week. The shelter is divided into 12 sections and every day each section is cleaned thoroughly by volunteers. Once the hard work is done, you could spend some fun time with the dogs – playing with them, walking them and generally making a fuss of them. You would then feed the dogs and finish off by washing up their dishes. Initially you would be working alongside either a kennel consultant or an experienced volunteer. Grooming is a separate but important part of dog care and regular grooming helps to ensure that dogs are comfortable. If you enjoy clipping, grooming, giving them a bath or even just a good brush, then we would love to hear from you - it all helps to keep the dogs healthy. PAWS welcome people who have time in the mornings to walk some of the resident dogs. By doing this, you would be bringing some variety and enrichment into their lives, teaching them social skills and giving them some well-deserved exercise. All of these factors can increase the chances of dogs finding new homes, which is our ultimate aim. Interested or want more information about any aspect of volunteering? Contact Kennel Consultants, Matt and Pete on 99683775 or come and along and see us between 08.00 and 12.00. PAWS Shelter is located just off the coastal road between the villages of Acheleia and Timi (diagonally opposite the road leading up to the motorway and Ayia Varvara). N.B. Music Friends Group

Solutions

A Music Friendship Group has recently been set up by Jan Robinson. Jan found, that as a widow, it was very difficult to get out and enjoy local music with like-minded people. Having been married to a musician, she was keen also to encourage live music events in the Paphos area by providing a forum for more people to go along to them. Jan has a website where she has provided listings for live music in Paphos since 2003 and has an open group on Facebook where musicians and venues can post details of their acts/events. This very friendly group meets monthly, but is not a dating agency, being designed for those who are on their own, or have a partner away, to make new friendships around live music. So far the Group has been to see Michael Antoniou with his ‘Swing’ show, the Celine Dion Tribute organised by Kendall & Morelli Events and Katerina who sang a beautiful range of classic songs. The last show they attended was on the 1 June, The Big Show with Andi Hobbs and and Aj Vickers at Veranda Restaurant, Tomb of the Kings Road A brilliant time was had by all at the show. It really was superb with 4 costume changes and tributes to Buddy Holly, Michael Buble, The Blues Brothers and much more and lasted several hours. The lads put a ton of energy into the performance and both had wonderful voices. The group were all very impressed by the professionalism of the whole performance and the cheeky way both guys worked so well together. They made everyone laugh, dance and sing-along. This show is to be found at venues around Paphos this season and is unmissable! Please see website below for details. The food was very tasty and Vicky who co-ordinated our table, did her very best to make us welcome and comfortable. Parasols were moved around and extra chairs provided, plus the price of the meals was very reasonable. All in all, a great day and a group of happy people all asking to attend the next event. It was lovely to see some new faces to the Group and meet some more friends. Please see www.nitbats.com, ‘events’ page ‘monthly listings’ for details of the next event. The shows chosen are suggested by members of the Group. As people have made friends, they have liaised to find companions to go to other musical events, which is a lovely off-shoot. For more information please see www.nitbats.com, ‘Events’ page, ‘Monthly Live Events’ or contact Jan Robinson on 99760796/26642836 or email: nitbats@hotmail. com. www.facebook.com/groups/205055152857354 - NB Music Group.

In preparation for the launch of the new €10 banknote on 23 September 2014, 3 million shops and small businesses across the euro area will receive information leaflets and motion cards about the new €10 The leaflet encourages the shops and small businesses to ensure that their banknote handling and authentication devices are ready to accept the new €10 The €10 banknote of the Europa series will be issued on 23 September 2014. To ensure that those who handle cash at work are familiar with the visual appearance of the new banknote and its security features, and can relay this information to their customers, the Eurosystem will send leaflets to over 3 million shops and small business across the euro area in June. The leaflet reminds professional cash handlers about the timeline for the launch and the steps that need to be taken to adapt their equipment for the new €10 banknote. It also reminds them that banknotes are easy to check manually, using the FEEL-LOOK-TILT checking method. Ton Roos, Director Banknotes, said, “We are undertaking this extensive exercise to ensure the information reaches as many professional cash handlers as possible in all euro area countries to prepare them for the new banknote”. Distribution of the leaflet started today in Finland and Estonia and will reach all euro area countries by the end of June. Additional copies of the leaflet can also be ordered on the www.new-euro-banknotes.eu website.

The Bee Gees! All three siblings were born on the Isle of Man but moved to their father Hugh’s home town Chorlton-cum-Hardy in Manchester - to attend school. In 1958, the family moved to Australia and, once there, they began performing regularly. With Robert Stigwood as their manager, the Bee Gees had their first international hit in 1967 with ‘New York Mining Disaster’. The Bee Gees first album ‘Bee Gees 1st’ was a success. Within just over a year, the Bee Gees had clocked up 24 number 1 hits in 15 different countries. Their fourth album ‘Horizontal’ was released in 1968 and became a huge hit spawning the international hit singles ‘Massachusetts’ and ‘World’. This was followed by ‘Idea’ later the same year, which included the single ‘I’ve Gotta Get A Message To You’.

In 1975, with the help of producer Arif Mardi, they then released ‘Jive Talkin’ which went to number 1. The Bee Gees’ next project, recording the soundtrack to ‘Saturday Night Fever’ (1977), was another huge success and resulted in some of their best known songs, including ‘Stayin’ Alive’, ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ and ‘Night Fever’. The album was unsurprisingly another number 1, but it set a record of being so, for 24 consecutive weeks. The Bee Gees in 1997, received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the American Music Awards, a Legend Award at the World Music Awards and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, in 2003, Maurice Gibb died at the age of 53. In November 2011, it was revealed that Robin Gibb had been battling liver and colon cancer. Robin passed away on 20 May 2012 leaving Barry as the last surviving Bee Gee.
