Fytos Thrasyvoulou, who heads the association SYKAP, blamed all-inclusive hotel packages and the rapid growth of international brand chain food outlets and restaurants for the dire situation. According to recent research conducted by the CTO, tourists from the UK on all inclusive holidays account up to 40% whereas a staggering 80% of Russian arrivals select all-inclusive holidays. Thrasyvoulou said that only 380 establishments currently operate in Paphos, compared to 710 four years ago, he also blamed the euro, saying that since it was adopted, it had brought with it problems with the British pound sterling.

He said that due to all-inclusive packages, even in areas with 6,000 or 7,000 hotel beds, local restaurants were not being filled to capacity. In 2012, First Choice holidays made all its holidays “all inclusive”, becoming the UK’s first mainstream holiday company specialising in all-inclusive holidays. Flights, in-resort transfers, hotel accommodation, three meals a day and unlimited local drinks are all included in the price. Critics of all inclusive packages say that the very nature of the holiday means guests are tempted to stay within the

On the basis of the results of the Passengers Survey, tourist arrivals reached 381.955 in July 2014 compared to 361.442 in July 2013, recording an increase of 5,7%. The Ministry of Health has prepared a long and detailed action plan, and has sent travel advice to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to advise travellers to and from the affected countries of West Africa to be careful and follow the guidelines. Furthermore, instructions have been given to ports and airports on how to recognise symptoms and deal with such cases. Some 1,427 people have died since Ebola began spreading in West Africa at what the World Health Organization (WHO) has described as an “unprecedented” rate. The current outbreak in West Africa is the deadliest occurrence since Ebola was discovered in 1976. The WHO has declared a public health emergency and has warned the scale of the current outbreak has so far been underestimated. As a result, the Sierra Leonean parliament passed a new law meaning anyone harbouring Ebola victims could face two years in prison.

RYANAIR EYES struggling carrier

CYPRUS AIRWAYS

Ryanair CEO Michael O` Leary has said that with the help of the Irish low-cost airline, Cyprus Airways could get back on a path of rapid growth with new roots and more flights, that would increase the number of its passengers to three million per year. O` Leary met in Nicosia last month with the governments team responsible for finding a strategic investor for the troubled national air carrier. He also met with the Communications Minister Marios Demetriades who said that Ryanair has submitted a proposal separate from the ongoing process aimed at finding a strategic investor. “From Ryanair`s point of view there is a very exciting future for Cyprus Airways where I believe with the help of Ryan Air we could put Cyprus Airways and Cyprus` tourism back on a path of a very much renewed and rapid growth, with new roots, more flights and new jobs for pilots, cabin crew and engineers here in Cyprus” O` Leary told the press. He explained that with the plan Ryanair has submitted to the Government of Cyprus, the company expects to grow from 500 thousand passengers last year, to about three million passengers over the next 3-4 years. “As we explained to the Minister we think we can deliver that growth using Cyprus Airways. So it will be Cyprus Airways growing again from 700 thousand passengers this year to three million in the next few years,” he said. Meanwhile, Tony Antoniou, ex chairman of the Board of Directors of Cyprus Airways, who resigned his post last month, has said that he left with a clear conscience, adding that there is no evidence of misappropriation on his part of company funds.

BRITISH RAF JETS

EXPATS IN CYPRUS probed for UK benefit fraud A staggering 126 investigations were conducted on expatriate residents in Cyprus concerning UK benefit fraud in 2013, it has been revealed. Reliable source say that the Department of Work and Pensions is “actively conducting” over 40 separate investigations across the island after receiving further tip-offs since January this year. The total amount of Britons abroad claiming welfare benefits is costing the tax payers an estimated £82million a year.

BRITISH Tornado jets from RAF Marham in Norfolk are currently based at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. The jets are playing a part in the humanitarian aid missions currently taking place in Iraq. The Tornado GR4 is known for its flexibility, speed and capability and will be used in a purely “surveillance role” over Iraq an MOD spokesman told the FG. The jets are capable of taking detailed aerial images and are equipped with Raptor – special reconnaissance equipment that gathers sophisticated, high-resolution imagery. Tornado GR4’s were used in February to map floods in the UK. RAF transport planes are currently based at Akrotiri and are flying relief flights to Iraq. RAF Akrotiri is used by the RAF as a base for overseas operations in the Middle East and also for training. It is one of the few full-scale RAF stations left outside the UK. Akrotiri has played a crucial role during Britain’s recent operations in the Middle East. During both major campaigns against Iraq in 1991 and 2003, and also during the no-fly zone operations between, it operated as a staging post for British forces en route to the region. Wet and wild! Ayia Napa mayor drenched after Ice Bucket Challenge

The Cyprus Sports Organization will be organizing the European “MOVE WEEK” to be held across the continent between 29 September – 5 October. “MOVE WEEK” is an annual event and an integral part of the Now We Move Campaign. It is about promoting the benefits of being active and participating regularly in sport and physical activity. A statement issued by the Cyprus Sports Organization says that the event aims at raising awareness among citizens about a healthy way of life and about working out. The major goal is to raise the number of European citizens who work out by 100 million by 2020. The Cyprus Sports Organization is the national coordinator of the event and has already called on other organizations, groups, institutions and bodies from a great spectrum of Cyprus life to join. In 2012 the first ever “MOVE WEEK” engaged individuals, organizations and cities from across Europe in a large-scale celebration of sport and physical activity, by promoting a myriad of successful sport and physical activity initiatives across Europe. 4  Issue 16  •  12th September to 9th October, 2014

Ayia Napa Mayor Yiannis Karousos has completed the infamous Ice Bucket Challenge. Following a nomination from pop star AM Sniper, the mayor had ice cold water dumped over his head by his wife Maria and two children. Following the completion of the challenge Karousos nominated Paralimni Mayor Theodoros Pyrillis, Cyprus Tourism Organisation deputy head Kostas Koumis and actor Andreas Georgiou to take part in the challenge. Some of the most famous people in the world have been drenching themselves in freezing cold water and posting the video online in the fundraising stunt. In the last two weeks, the Ice Bucket Challenge has quite literally “soaked” the nation. Everyone from Ethel Kennedy to Justin Timberlake has poured a bucket of ice water over his or her head and challenged others do the same or make a donation to fight ALS It has helped raise money for and awareness of ALS, a neurodegenerative disease. With only about half of the general public knowledgeable about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, the Ice Bucket Challenge is making a profound difference. Since July 29, The Association has welcomed more than 70,000 new donors to the cause.

Below is a list of tips to help you get on the right track to mastering Greek!

01

Build on solid foundations

02

Listen to music

03

Study every day

04

Set yourself targets

05

Focus on your personal interests

06

Join an online community

07

08

10

Attend local events

Make sure you are comfortable with the fundamentals of the language before tackling the more advanced structures. Ask your instructor for extra assistance if you do not feel confident that you have mastered the topic.

The first word you will master this way will doubtlessly be ‘Sagapo’ (‘I love you’), but you will increase your vocabulary significantly by listening to Greek songs. Note down any words that sound interesting and add them to vocabulary that you are learning in your lessons.

Spending around 30 minutes a day revising your week’s lesson will help immensely! Set aside 30 minutes in which you are normally not very busy and make this your revision time each day.

Setting reasonable targets is a good way to motivate yourself. You could set yourself a time limit or aim for a specific level of proficiency.

Once you have got to grips with the basics of the language, plan your discussions, writing and reading around topics that interest you. This way you are more likely to remember your new words, phrases and grammar.

If you have chosen to learn Greek, you are already in one of the two best countries to do so. If your access to Cypriots willing to help you practice is limited, then join an online community where you will find many likeminded learners willing to help.

You Tube and other video sites are filled with free language learning videos available at all levels. Choose videos set in situations that you believe you will likely find yourself in.

Thanks to smartphones and tablets, you can add to your classroom-based lessons on-the-go. Take advantage of a free afternoon to brush up on your vocabulary or pronunciation skills. Many apps contain complete lessons with audio tracks, vocabulary lists, flashcards and more.

If memorizing your classroom vocabulary lists on your own sounds monotonous, why not try something more interactive? Via Skype you can not only take private classes, but you can also participate in discussion groups. Consult the mixxer.com, a free educational website for language exchanges. After that, you can talk to him or her via Skype and write a blog to receive corrections and feedback -- all from the comfort of your own home.

Ultimately, the goal should be to take your skills beyond the classroom. Village festivals are an ideal setting to meet local Cypriots and the friendly atmosphere will make people eager to share a friendly chat.

If you are thinking about learning Greek, give Demetris Georgiades a ring and take advantage of the excellent lessons on offer. You will be speaking Greek in no time! Real Estates-Investment opportunities in Cyprus Are there real estate investment opportunities in Cyprus? Is now the right time to invest? Since 2008 the Cyprus economy in general and its real estate sector in particular have been facing challenges since as a result of multiple waves of crisis, starting with the global financial meltdown in 2008 and followed by the European periphery sovereign debt crisis in 2010-12 and more recently the Cyprus banking sector restructuring in 2013. These events have led to steep adjustments in real estate prices in some cases significantly over 50%. This has created unprecedented buy opportunities. Despite the recent difficulties, the country retains certain unique features which ensure that in the medium term and long term, Cyprus real estate is simply not going to drop off the face of the earth: a.

The country is ideally located on the crossroad between 3 continents; Europe, Africa and Asia (Middle East).

b.

Beautiful scenery with c. 350 days of sunshine and a mild climate.

c.

Friendly population and interesting culture with virtually no crime.

d.

Cyprus is a member of the Commonwealth and the European Union.

e.

Favorable tax regime with low corporation tax (12.5%) and a network of double tax treaties including one with Russia and China.

f.

The legal system is based on English Law which offers transparency, certainty and a business friendly legal framework.

g.

The land registry office is one of the most advanced in the world providing a safe and simple regime for protecting and transferring ownership.

h.

High level of education and services. Ninety percent of Cypriots speak English. 1 in 800 Cypriots works for a big 4 accounting firm. In absolute terms Cyprus has the second largest number of Chartered Accountants outside England after India

i.

Very good infrastructure which is currently being improved and an advanced telecommunication system.

j.

Plans are underway to increase tourism infrastructure and facilities on the entire island. A mega-yacht marina has recently opened in Limassol and there are similar plans for one in Paphos. Numerous special developments, such as golf courses and theme parks, are under way due to special incentive schemes provided by the government.

k.

Cyprus has advanced medical care with interesting prospects of becoming a centre of supply of health services and higher education.

In addition to the traditional strengths of Cyprus, there demand and supply fundamentals indicate that a recovery in the Cyprus real estate sector is imminent making this a unique time to buy at the bottom of the cycle and benefit from the ensuring recovery.

1/4 PAGE --- 125mm x 178mm

On the demand side, there are 3 factors providing impetus to demand: a.

Since 2012, a growing number of Chinese have been purchasing properties in Cyprus. The number is estimated at 1,600 units sold. This is due to the policy allowing buyers of units in excess of E300K to obtain a Cyprus residence. This has been recently complemented with a policy allowing buyers of real estate in excess of E2.5m in value to obtain a Cyprus passport which is an EU passport allowing its bearer the right to travel, live and work freely in entire European Union

b.

The UK economy (traditionally main source of demand for Cyprus second home market) has been growing at its fastest rate in the past 5 years (est. 2.2% - 2.7% for 2014, well above the EU average), with UK house prices nationwide (not just in London) growing by 11.1% since May 2013 (in London growth was 17%), triggering hopes of a gradual return of the English buyer to Cyprus’ real estate scene.

c.

Natural Gas Reserves: Noble Energy has recently discovered substantial gas reserves (5 – 8 trillion cubic feet) offshore Cyprus which is anticipated to add further impetus to Cyprus’ economy with spill-over on positive effects on the real estate sector.

On the supply side, since 2008 there has been almost no real estate supply put to market, therefore, after 7 years of crisis any unsold inventories have been largely depleted. WinWin Estates (and its main principal, Andreas Findiklis) is in a unique position to assist any real estate buyer or investor with real estate investments in Cyprus as a result of: a.

Unique contacts. Having served as general manager of Leptos group (largest property developer in Cyprus) for 38 years, Mr. Findiklis has contacts and relationships with all main developers and banking institutions.

b.

Seasoned professional with negotiation, legal and finance skills to assist in re-structuring negotiations.

c.

Deep understanding of the sources of demand and the product that currently sells in order to assist with strategic repositioning of projects.

d.

Assistance with sales of second homes (unique global network of brokers to facilitate sales).

e.

Understanding of all zoning, permitting and regulatory issues.

f.

Expertise in development and construction (limited development/renovations maybe necessary even for mature cashflowing projects).

The main thing is DO NOT PANIC or SIGN ANYTHING you do not understand. Some funeral homes suddenly appear or telephone to offer their services immediately and urge the bereaved family to sign various documents whilst not fully explaining the content. This I feel is an inappropriate way to liaise with a bereaved family. We at ANGEL GUARDIANS FUNERAL HOME are on hand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist you through this most difficult time. HEALTH CHECK

ON YOUR PROPERTY

We all know how beautiful the weather is here in Cyprus and as we head towards Autumn it is always a good idea to get some things checked on your property, as we know how severe the rains can be when they do come! With rising damp, penetrating damp, leaking flat roofs and unsightly markings on walls inside and out, something needs to be done! If your roof has zero protection – just bare concrete or a poor finish with no proper membrane or correct sealant, it should be looked at. Rising damp is not only nasty and unsightly – it can cause health issues, affecting asthma sufferers and even leading to bronchitis or respiratory problems.

Platres and Episkopi receive fire trucks from SBA British Forces Cyprus completed their program of gifting fire trucks to the local community when the final two of the vehicles were donated to the villages of Platres and Episkopi last month. In the past month the Bases have presented a total of six fire truck to the community to help the villages protect themselves during the dangerous summer fire season. The trucks were handed over by Dr Phillip Rushbrook the Chief Officer of the bases. At the presentation in Episkopi Pavlos Pouris, the Episkopi Community President explained that in the previous season when seven fires were burning in the area it took longer than usual to get help to put out a fire close to Episkopi village. He said ‘We are grateful to the bases for this fire truck which will be a great help to our community in an emergency.’ He added ‘the gift strengthens the relationships between the bases and the Episkopi community; you will always have friends here.’ In Platres the final fire truck was accepted by Panayiotis Papadopoulos. During the ceremony he said that the fire truck will be used for more than just helping with fires explaining that frequent land slides in winter blocked the roads and that the high pressure water jets on the fire truck will be used to quickly clear these obstructions. He expanded on the close ties with the military throughout the years and thanked Dr Rushbrook for the much appreciated donation. Present at both ceremonies was the Episkopi Bases fire station manger, Neophyto Neophtou who has organised training for volunteers from each of the six villages that have been given a fire truck. During the Platres presentation he offered to help with further crew training if required. He said ‘These fire trucks will save property, lives and money. Tackling a fire before it gets out of control is vital; these trucks give our local communities this capability.

Friends’ Hospice For the second year running, the Madvent ticket sales for the daily prize-winning will be held to raise funds for The Friends’ Hospice in Paphos. The prizes donated for last year’s event attracted ticket sales of €10,731 for the charity which provides palliative care, free of charge, for anyone in the region, regardless of nationality. Since it relocated to its new premises at St George’s Polyclinic in the town, the Hospice has given specialised treatment to more than 100 patients suffering from conditions and diseases for which a cure is no longer possible. Madvent is the brainchild of the owners of The Outlet Store group of shops in Chlorakas, Mesogi and Kolossi who, along with the Hospice’s support volunteers, canvas businesses to offer prizes of goods, travel, accommodation or hospitality. Winning ticket numbers are drawn each day during The Outlet Store sponsored programme on Rock FM. This year there are two ‘star’ prizes – Emirates tickets for two people to Dubai and accommodation at the magnificent Atlantis Hotel on The Palm, and Condor flights for two from Larnaca Airport to Berlin. Other prizes vary from electrical goods to travel vouchers for B&B in a variety of hotels around Cyprus, cruises from Paphos Harbour, white-knuckle rides, as well as meals for two at many restaurants and tavernas. House at centre of landmark Cyprus property case turned into pub THE OCCUPIED HOUSE of Greek Cypriot refugee Titina Loizidou is to be turned into a pub, according to reports from occupied Kyrenia. The house was the centre of a landmark ruling in 1996 when Loizidou brought a case against Turkey alleging violation of her right to peacefully enjoy her property in the Turkish occupied northern part of the island. The European Court of Human Rights found Turkey guilty of continuing human rights violations. Turkey paid 1.12 million euros in compensation to Loizidou. Havadis newspaper reports that the decision to convert the property into a pub was taken by Kemal Hifzioglu the current inhabitant of Loizidou’s house. The paper said that Loizidou is aware of the development; however she expressed her shock, noting that the house was built by her grandfather and its conversion into a pub consists a lack or respect towards Keryneia and towards Keryneia’s past.

Hoax SMS irritates Central Bank

Revenue from tourism saw a welcome boost in June according to new figures.

The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) were forced to quash rumours earlier this month in relation to the viability of the Co-operative sector and the Bank of Cyprus were totally unfounded.

Revenues increased by €43,4 million in June - compared to the same month in 2013, while during the first half of the year, revenue increased by €81,1 million, according to the Statistical Service.

The CBS had to point out that the recapitalization of Bank of Cyprus was successfully completed recently.

On the basis of the results of the Passenger Survey, says the announcement of the Statistical Sevice, revenue from tourism reached €303,2 mn in June 2014 compared to €259,8 mn in the corresponding month of the previous year, recording an increase of 16.7%.

The Co-operative sector has been restructured and recapitalised without the participation of depositors and according to the adjustment program of Cyprus, there is an additional amount of €1bn for future capital needs, “says the CBC.

For the period January – June 2014 revenue from tourism is estimated to €778,7 mn compared to €697,6 mn in the corresponding period of 2013, recording an increase of 11.6%. As regards tourist arrivals, the Statistical Service announced that they reached 342.221 in June 2014 compared to 308.219 in the corresponding month of 2013.

The announcement came following a complaint by Chairman of Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission Demetra Kalogerou of hoax SMS, presenting sending a warning of a new haircut of the deposits in Cyprus. Issue 16  •  12th September to 9th October, 2014  13

AWARD CEREMONY FOR

NEAPOLIS UNIVERSITY:

Special Award in International Architectural Competition (UIA), Durban South Africa

T

he awards ceremony for the Competition of the International Union of Architects (UIA) on: “UTOPIA AND / OR HAPINESS” was recently held in Durban, South Africa where the Master Program in Landscape Architecture of the Neapolis University of Pafos received an honorary award. The event took place during the World Congress of UIA 2014 and the award was received on behalf of the Neapolis University by Dr. Julia Georgi, Associated Professor of Landscape Architecture. All Jury Members of the International Architecture Competition of Ideas 2014 (UIA) as well as Mr. Vassilis Sgoutas, former President of UIA, were present at the award ceremony. The Architectural Competition of Ideas 2014 was undertaken and completed by the Turkish Union of Architects. The members of the winning team are: • Christos Constantinides, Graduate Student of the Master Degree Program in Landscape Architecture, Neapolis University of Pafos • Dr. Julia Georgi, Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture, Neapolis University of Pafos • Dr. Anna Maria Vissilia, Lecturer of Landscape Architecture, Agricultural University of Athens During her brief speech at the ceremony, Dr. Julia Georgi elaborately pointed out that, “The award received by the Neapolis University of Pafos provides us with strength and optimism which is needed to create current “utopian” landscapes, not only for forthcoming, but for today’s generations as well.” She also mentioned that, “the proposed green island and peripatetic gardens in the winning landscape structure create the perfect means to investigate the notion of modern utopia, providing an image of the world which simulates ideal conditions encountered in Paradise. Such a landscape may fulfill human dreams come true in an expression of a better world, a space for contemplation, a borderland between reality and fantasy to escape the trappings of the modern world and reconnect humanity with nature.

The smell of Cyprus Now men can have the scent like the woody, green smell of Cyprus! A new cologne from mens grooming retailer The Motley has just been released. According to the manufacturer, the scent “Brings to mind the crisp green scent of a coastal forest, Cyprus mingles saltwater, dry pine needles, ambergris and cedar with more unexpected notes like ginger and the smell of traditional shaving cream.” Cyprus has a long connection with perfumes. Perfumes created on the island date back more than 4,000 years. Remnants of the perfumes were found inside an ancient 3,230-square-foot factory that was part of a larger industrial complex at Pyrgos in 2003. 18  Issue 16  •  12th September to 9th October, 2014

All set for the Cyprus Rally

HALF PAGE VERT. --- 125mm x 361mm

This Month in Cyprus History

Preparations for the 2014 Cyprus Rally are entering the final stages, as the moment when the first car will set its tyres off the starting ramp and into the city of Nicosia The Cyprus Rally has been held yearly since 1970.. Back then, it was a long, rough, tough and ultimately destructive event, with unattainable average speeds and controls placed to extract maximum time penalties. However, it was efficiently organised and overseas visitors enjoyed the warm hospitality and genuine friendliness of the event. Despite suffering a two-year gap (1974/75) in the aftermath of the Turkish invasion, the rally quickly climbed the European coefficients, reaching coefficient 3 in 1978. 1982 saw the Cyprus Rally promoted to the top level in Europe and it went on to become one of the elite when coefficient 20 was devised in 1988. From then, the goal was the World Championship. The Cyprus organisers were thrown in at the deep end when the rally was taken into the WRC as a lastminute replacement for the China Rally in May 2000, leaving them just four months in which to put everything together. This year the Cyprus Rally will be part of the European Rally Championship as well as the Middle-East Rally Championship, becoming the only rally to ever host two FIA sanctioned events at once, a press release said on Monday. The 2014 Cyprus Rally is planned to take place from the 19th of September to the 21st. The crews will have to drive through fifteen demanding yet spectacular special tracks, totalling 773 km.

Europe offers to establish

GAZA-CYPRUS SEA ROUTE YNET News in Israel has reported that an unnamed European source told Palestinian media outlets that Europe was willing to establish a sea route between the Gaza Strip and Larnaca – meant for both people and merchandise. According to the initiative, European observers would be present both in Gaza and Larnaca in order to prevent security violations. The source noted that Europe was interested in finding a comprehensive, permanent solution in order to save from having to rehabilitate the Strip every few years. The Gaza Strip, sandwiched between Israel and Egypt, has been a recurring flashpoint in the IsraelPalestinian conflict for years. Israel occupied Gaza in the 1967 Middle East war and only pulled its troops and settlers out in 2005. Israel considered this the end of the occupation, but it still exercises control over most of Gaza’s borders, waters and airspace. Egypt controls Gaza’s southern border. Meanwhile, Ambassador of Palestine to Cyprus, Walid Hasan, appealed to the international community for “international protection to be provided for the Palestinian civilian population, throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territories”. “The tragic and continuous increase in the number of casualties is reflective of the brutality and indiscriminate nature of Israel’s ongoing onslaught against the Palestinian population in Gaza, in grave breach of all norms and rules of international humanitarian law and human rights law,” he said.

1942 The 360.000 inhabitants of Cyprus are once again reading the war news with feverish interest. They know that the future of their Island home depends military events Russia and the Western Desert the next few months. They know that major success by Von Bock and Rommel might bring war on to their soil. Cyprus has lived in a state of tension ever since Hitler captured Crete in May. 1941. Anxiety rose to a high pitch early this year, when It seemed possible that the enemy, striking through the Caucasus and Egypt simultaneously, might catch the Middle East a gigantic pincers grip. They realise that invasion next spring, if not earlier, is still a live possibility. 1949 The British Nationality Act, passed last year was gazetted in Nicosia, Cyprus. With few exceptions, Cypriots will automatically be recognised citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies. 1950 Lancaster bombers and several types of fighters have arrived at the R.A.F. station at Nicosia for use on training courses. 1950 A Royal Air Force Brigand fighter-bomber crashed on Nicosia airport, two hours before a Battle of Britain display was due to start. There were no injuries. 1953 Five more earth tremors have shook Cyprus, the last accompanied by a sound like an explosion. The few inhabitants of Paphos who had ventured back into their shattered houses ran out into the streets when they heard the mysterious sound. Tremors have been continual in Cyprus this month, when two intense quakes flattened two villages in ten seconds and killed at least 35 people. Hundreds of homeless, mostly from villages in the Paphos and Limassol area, have since been living in the open 1996 Police arrested six foreigners in connection with threats that terrorists would attack the French embassy in Nicosia. A Police Spokesman said that four Pakistanis and two Syrians were arrested. 2011 The Evangelos Florakis Naval Base explosion was the worst peacetime military accident ever recorded in Cyprus 98 containers of explosives that had been stored for 2½ years in the sun on the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base near Zygi self-detonated. The resulting explosion killed 13 people, 12 of them immediately 2012 A passenger bus traveling between Marrakesh and Ouarzazate crashes in a ravine in southern Morocco, killing at least 42 people and injuring up to 25 others 2012 61 people, illegal immigrants traveling below deck, die after a fishing boat capsizes fifty meters off the Izmir Province coast of Turkey, near the Greek Aegean islands 2012 A series of earthquakes hit south-west China, leaving at least 64 people dead and 715 injured.

In June in international animal rights protest was launched after a dog was thrown into a hotel machine used for crushing rubbish and later died. FOREST FIRE RISKS REMAIN The Cyprus Forestry Department has warned the public to be careful of the dangers of starting a fire, especially in forest areas. Holiday makers and hunters are urged not to light any fires and not to use cutting, soldering or welding tools in open spaces or burn dry grass. Smokers should also be careful and try not to smoke in or around forests.

A total of five beaches in Cyprus now offer the ability for wheelchairs users to have autonomous access to the water.

The Paraplegic Organisation has said in a statement that at five beaches, namely Protaras (Yianna Mari), Agia Napa (Vathia Gonia), Limassol (Olympion Beach), Paphos (SODAP) and Polis Chrysochous (tourist beach), Seatrac devices have been installed enabling people to access the sea if they have mobility problems. The devices have been purchased as part of the cooperation programme entitled “Greece-Cyprus 2007-2013”. 26  Issue 16  •  12th September to 9th October, 2014

Paws Dog Shelter PAWS DOG SHELTER VETERANS The dogs featured this month are all older and have been at the shelter for a considerable length of time. The advantages of homing an older dog are many. You know exactly what you are getting in relation to size and temperament. At this stage of life, the dog has been socialized with other dogs, and people. Seniors are more mellow and calmer than younger dogs and know how to wait more patiently. Because they are more focused, they are often easier to train than younger dogs who are easily distracted.

One thing is for certain – the older dog’s gratitude at having a chance to give and receive love is unbounded and they become a member of the family very quickly. Can you give any of these dogs, or other senior citizens at PAWS, the opportunity to enjoy their twilight years in the loving home that they deserve? Contact Matt or Pete on 99683775.

Betty Boo

Spindle

Pebbles

Gandalf

Betty Boo is a medium sized, female, black with white, pointer cross breed, who came to the shelter back in 2003. Although she is now approximately 13 years of age, Betty Boo still enjoys going for a walk and gets on well with other dogs.

Spindle is a brown and white, male, pointer and is 10 years of age. He was brought to the shelter when he was a few months old. Spindle suffered from rickets when he was younger and has bowed legs as a result. He is currently responding well to therapeutic dog massage. He is quiet and good with other dogs.

Pebbles is a small/medium female pointer cross breed. She is black and white in colour and is a quiet and shy girl. She is 8 years old and came into the shelter when she was just a youngster. In the summertime she loves to cool off by splashing in a little bath of water.

Gandalf is an 8 year old, male black and white pointer. He has now been at the shelter for 7 years. Although he loves his walks, he is not very tolerant of cats. Gandalf is affectionate, likes getting attention and cuddles.

ALL FOUR DOGS ARE NEUTERED AND VACCINATED.

SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT Do you remember the catch phrase “and now for something completely different” from the zany comedy programme called ‘Monty Python’s Flying Circus’? Well on Saturday, 18th October 2014 the PAWS Dog Shelter team in conjunction with Judith Boundy, proprietor of ‘Here & Now’, are indeed going to be doing something completely different. That afternoon, at 2.00 for 2.30 p.m. a fashion show with a twist will be held at the PAWS Dog Shelter.

OTHER FORTHCOMING PAWS EVENTS 20 September PAWS RAFT RACE at Bonamare Beach 10.30 a.m. Entrants and Spectators welcome contact Simon 97793251. BBQ at 2.30 p.m. tickets available from Ann 99247765 Sunday 5 October YARD SALE at PAWS Dog Shelter Acheleia. Sellers from 0800, buyers from 0900, refreshments available, easy car parking.

The event, aptly called ‘Mutts and Butts’ will see the models exhibiting a variety of up to date ladies fashions whilst simultaneously show-casing some of the PAWS resident dogs, who are looking for loving, permanent homes. It will be an enjoyable afternoon and no doubt there will be a few laughs – some planned and some unplanned. Tickets for the event, priced at €5, include a drink and cake at the mid-point of the show. The clothing supplied by ‘Here & Now’, modelled at the event and available for purchase will be UK high street fashion, with labels that you recognise and at prices that you will love. 10% of all purchases made at, and as a result of the event, will be kindly donated to the PAWS charity by Judith. Spectators are welcome to walk round the shelter after the event and there will be people on hand to assist with enquiries about dogs and answer questions about the shelter and charity in general. Tickets should be purchased in advance from the following: Paws Dog Shelter Acheleia, Paws Charity Shop Chlorakas, Here & Now Coral Bay Rd. Kissonerga, PAWS stall at the Duck Pond market on a Sunday, Shampooch Yeroskipou or by arrangement with Maria on 97645543.

ALL CREDIT TO OUR VOLUNTEERS You may be surprised to hear that it is the volunteers at PAWS Dog shelter who are the backbone of this charitable organisation. Without them and their valuable contribution, the shelter would be unable to operate and the resident dogs would suffer. The total number of volunteers out-number staff at the shelter by more than twenty to one. When PAWS volunteers are asked why they give up their time so willingly, the invariable answer is ‘because of the dogs’. Surprisingly some volunteers have never in their life owned a dog, usually because of work or family commitments but at the shelter everyone gets to sample the affection that dogs give. That includes volunteers who clean, feed, groom, walk or socialise the dogs. Did you know that petting a dog can reduce stress and anxiety and also lift your mood? Come along and observe PAWS helpers in action any morning of the week. This way you would get a ‘feel’ for the organisation and see what goes on at the kennels. If you felt comfortable, you could assist an experienced volunteer in some of the tasks that they do without making any longer term commitment. If you wanted to take things to the next stage and become a volunteer you would be more than welcome. We understand that some people cannot make a commitment to volunteer on the same day each week as they have obligations elsewhere. Speak to us about it and we can come to an arrangement that is convenient for you. Similarly if you only come to Cyprus for a few weeks of the year, you could still make a valuable contribution. Go on, take that first step, come and see us or contact Matt or Pete on 99683775. You and the PAWS dogs have everything to gain!
