Dr. Leo M. Lambert – Elon University President Leo M. Lambert became Elon’s eighth president in January 1999. Very early in his tenure, his responsibilities included completing the Elon Vision strategic plan, including the construction of Rhodes Stadium and the opening of Belk Library. Today, Lambert’s work focuses on an ambitious new strategic vision which aims to place Elon, with a national reputation for engaged learning, among the nation’s best small, selective, private universities. Substantial progress has been achieved toward realizing this goal. The academic climate of the campus has been strengthened by endowed programs such as the Kenan Honors Fellowships, the Baird Pulitzer Prize Lectures and the Isabella Cannon Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Leadership. He has led efforts to more than double expenditures for library acquisitions, increase faculty sabbatical opportunities and improve Elon’s position in Division I athletics by joining the Southern Conference. Lambert has been committed to further strengthening Elon’s renowned programs of experiential learning, and the results have included top national rankings for Elon’s study abroad, volunteer service, undergraduate research and leadership programs. Lambert has provided national leadership in efforts such as Campus Compact and Project Pericles, which encourage students to become civically engaged in their communities. During his tenure, the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business has attained AACSB International accreditation, the School of Communications has achieved accreditation by ACEJMC and the Elon University School of Law, which opened in Greensboro in 2006, achieved American Bar Association provisional approval in 2008. Recent new campus facilities have included the Ernest A. Koury Sr. Business Center, the Academic Village, The Colonnades dining hall and residence halls, The Oaks residence complex and Belk Track and White Field. Lambert has written extensively about post-secondary education and is co-editor of a book about university teaching that was published by the Syracuse University Press in 2005. His alma mater, the State University of New York, awarded him an honorary doctorate of human letters in 2002 in recognition of exceptional achievements in higher education. Lambert’s greatest honor in life, in collaboration with his wife Laurie, has been the privilege of parenting two daughters, Callie, a student at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Mollie, a student at Furman University.
Dave Blank – Elon University Director of Athletics
Dave Blank begins his third year as the Elon University Director of Athletics for the 2008-09 campaign, following another year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in terms of athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. During his first two years at Elon, he has ignited ambitious expansions in the Department of Athletics – including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club with emphasis on funding scholarships for student-athletes, a restructuring of the academic assistance program for athletics in conjunction with the Office of the Provost and a plan for future facility improvements, including an already completed renovation and expansion of the Latham Park baseball facility. In June 2008, Blank was appointed to serve on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet – a 31-member cabinet consisting of athletics directors, senior woman administrators and faculty athletic representatives representing the nation’s multi-sport Division I conferences which will help shape the future of Division I athletics. Under Blank’s direction, 12 of Elon’s 16 teams fashioned higher Southern Conference finishes during the 2007-08 season than they did during the 2006-07 campaign. What makes that fact even more impressive is that 10 Phoenix squads achieved a higher SoCon finish during the 2006-07 season than they did during the previous campaign. In 2007-08, the Phoenix baseball team went on to claim SoCon outright regular season and tournament crowns en route to making the program’s third NCAA regional appearance in seven seasons. Also, Elon fell one mere victory shy of capturing the SoCon’s automatic NCAA postseason bid in football, men’s basketball and men’s tennis. During the 2006-07 season, Elon notched its first winning record in men’s soccer at the Division I level and posted SoCon outright regular season and tournament titles and an NCAA postseason appearance in men’s tennis. The Phoenix men’s soccer (2006), football (2007), men’s tennis (2007 and 2008) and baseball (2008) teams have all earned national rankings during Blank’s time at Elon. Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006 after spending six years as the Director of Athletics at Drake University. At Drake, he directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was responsible for the creation of a comprehensive academic assistance program. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade-point average of 3.0 or above. Also, Blank oversaw the addition of the women’s crew, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs at Drake. Facility enhancements were a priority during his tenure at Drake, including upgrades in the softball complex, renovation of the strength and conditioning facilities and new locker rooms for several sports. Under Blank’s guidance, Drake completed a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium, which hosts football, soccer and track and field events as well as the nationally known Drake Relays. He restructured the Bulldog Club, which provides financial support for Drake athletics, resulting in a 90-percent increase in gifts. He also enhanced the marketing of Drake athletics to generate additional exposure and corporate donations. Blank served as chairman of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Committee and was a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance Committee and Football Issues Committee. He received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation in 2005. Before moving to Drake in 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). Blank directed the CINO Club, increasing fiscal contributions to Coastal Carolina athletics by more than 200 percent. He spearheaded efforts to raise more than $4 million to establish an intercollegiate football program at the university, which began play in 2003. Before moving into athletics administration, Blank spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in Lock Haven history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from South Carolina in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration (finance). He earned a master of science degree in business administration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children – Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis. 2008 Elon Phoenix Soccer

Throughout history there is told the legend of the rare and remarkable Phoenix, a crimson and gold bird that lived 500 years. It was sleek, swift and strong — the most marvelous bird ever created by human imagination. At the end of its life, with death approaching, it built a nest in an oak tree and was consumed in flames ignited by the sun. From the ashes emerged the next Phoenix — reborn and renewed, with strength forged in fire. Fire, too, has shaped the history of Elon University. The disastrous fire of 1923 all but destroyed Elon. Gone were Main Building, college records, classrooms, the library and the chapel. But within days of the fire, Elon trustees set in motion the plan for Elon to rise from the ashes, stronger than ever. The Phoenix is a powerful leader and an emblem of immortality. It is a perfect symbol for a school that is constantly renewing and recreating itself. The Elon motto, Numen Lumen, embraces intellectual and spiritual light. And so too, throughout history, the Phoenix has served as a symbol of light and knowledge. The Phoenix is timeless and unique. It perfectly describes an athletics program and an institution that are rising to new levels of excellence. There is only one Phoenix. There is only one Elon. Catch the Fire! The Elon University Department of Athletics is proactive in ensuring the academic success of all student-athletes from their recruiting visit through graduation. Integral components of academic support for athletics include the academic enhancement program, registration services, tutorial services, travel notices, recruiting visits, laptops and life skills. Academic Enhancement Program (AEP) All freshmen and select upperclassmen participate in the Academic Enhancement Program. All student-athletes in AEP meet with their assigned academic coordinator each week to discuss academic progress and concerns. In addition to weekly meetings, student-athletes in AEP are required to complete monitored study hours. To accommodate class and practice schedules, both daytime and nighttime options are available to complete monitored study hours. Registration Services All student-athletes are assigned an academic advisor through the academic advising office. The academic advisor serves as the primary contact for preregistration and graduation requirements and student-athletes meet with their academic advisor prior to the beginning of registration to determine scheduling needs. Student-athletes also meet with the academic coordinator for their sport to balance their academic schedule with athletic demands, such as in-season versus out-of-season scheduling. Life Skills In addition to the academic support provided by Elon Athletics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the studentathlete experience. Programs and speakers address topics such as freshman transition issues, health and wellness, and career/ graduate school preparation. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council is an organization for student-athletes, run by studentathletes, to provide an opportunity to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Burlington communities. Academic Success Phoenix athletes continue to excel in the classroom. Last year, Elon landed two ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans and saw 57 student-athletes earn Academic All-Southern Conference honors. 2008 Elon Phoenix Soccer

The Southern Conference, which enters its 88th season of intercollegiate competition in 2008, has become known as one of the nation’s leaders in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision confernece since earning that classification in 1981. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fiftholdest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Throughout its history, the Southern Conference has been an innovator in college athletics. The Southern Conference was the first “super conference” with its charter membership including the likes of Alabama, Auburn, and North Carolina. The SoCon, as it has come to be known by headline writers throughout the country, is the league that gave birth to the three-point shot in college basketball and was the college home of such sporting greats as Arnold Palmer, Jerry West and Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes-Scholarship winners have been selected from the conference. The Southern Conference office is located in the Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. MEMBERSHIP HISTORY The Southern Conference was formed on February 25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. Fourteen institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. Those charter members included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of 1921. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans five Southeastern states. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Samford, Western Carolina and Wofford. Elon

joined the Southern Conference on July 1, 2003. The Phoenix replaced Virginia Military Institute which left the conference on June 30, 2003. East Tennessee State, which joined the SoCon in 1978, left the conference following the conclusion of the 2004-05 academic year. Samford joined the league beginning with the 2008 season. Coaches and Administrators The Southern Conference has also been a breeding ground for some of college athletics’ most recognized coaches and administrators. Legendary basketball coaches Adolph Rupp of Kentucky and Everett Case of North Carolina State both worked the sidelines in the Southern Conference. Rupp guided the Wildcats to a 30-5 mark during the 1931 and 1932 seasons. Yet, for all his coaching accomplishments, Rupp never led Kentucky to a Southern Conference tournament championship. Case mentored the Wolfpack to six consecutive Southern Conference Tournament championships from 1947 through 1952. Lefty Driesell coached Davidson to three Southern Conference Tournament championships in 1966, 1968 and 1969. Driesell also won the league’s Coach of the Year award four straight times from 1963 through 1966. Former Georgia Tech coach Bobby Cremins earned league Coach of the Year honors three times in the late ’70s and early ’80s while at Appalachian State and is now the head coach at the College of Charleston. Terry Holland saw his basketball coaching career take off at Davidson when he returned to his alma mater in 1970. Holland was honored as the Southern Conference Coach of the Year for three consecutive seasons from 1970-72 and led the Wildcats to the conference tournament title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1970. J. Dallas Shirley, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, spent 21 years as the assistant to the commissioner and supervisor of officials in the Southern Conference. He also served as president of the International Association Basketball Officials and the United States Olympic Basketball Committee. The legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant got his coaching start in the Southern Conference as he guided the Maryland Terrapins in 1945. A legendary Southern Conference football coach is the late Frank Howard of Clemson, who guided the Tigers as a league member from 1940-52. The incomparable Howard won 69 Southern Conference games. The Southern Conference has been represented on the sidelines at five Super Bowls in recent years. Bobby Ross, who piloted the San Diego Chargers to the 1996 Super Bowl, was the head coach at The Citadel from 1973-77. Former Buffalo Bills head coach Marv Levy directed William & Mary from 1964-68. He was succeeded at William & Mary by Lou Holtz. William & Mary competed in the Southern Conference from 1936-77.

A new era awaits the 2008 edition of the Elon Phoenix women’s soccer team as new head coach Chris Neal takes over the reins of the program. Neal comes to Elon after spending seven seasons as an assistant coach at UNC Wilmington. He inherits a program which went 5-12-2 overall and 3-6-1 in Southern Conference play in 2007 and returns 22 players for this season. Under this new leadership, the goal for the Phoenix this season is to improve with every game. Goalkeepers Four goalkeepers appear on the 32-player roster, including senior Lizz Johnson (Miami, Fla.). Johnson, who enters the year ranked second on the program’s all-time chart in both saves and minutes played, is the only returning keeper. Joining her will be junior transfer Sydney Little (Garner, N.C.), sophomore newcomer Madeleine MeJean (Alexandria, Va.) and freshman Meghan Zapiec (Sewell, N.J.). As a junior, Johnson made 128 saves and recorded three shutouts in 19 games played. She logged over 1,600 minutes and posted a 1.54 GAA. Little is new to Elon, but saw plenty of action as the starting keeper for North Carolina State in 2007. Little started 13 matches and made 53 saves while recording three shutouts and a 1.49 GAA for the Wolfpack as a sophomore. MeJean and Zapiec are expected to provide depth at the position. Defenders Six of the 12 defenders on the 2008 squad were members of the team last year. Juniors Laura Norwind (Darnestown, Md.) and Lauren Griffith (Atlanta, Ga.) are the most veteran defenders on the team. Sophomores Megan Deutschle (Burlington, N.C), Meghan Braun (Glenelg, Md.), Maria Maturo (Stratford, Conn.) and Kyle Waggoner (Overland Park, Kan.) also return. They will be joined by sophomore transfer Caroline Klara (Lafayette, La.) and freshmen Andrea Keller (Richmond, Va.), Caroline Duke (Overland Park, Kan.) and Britta Winans (Morristown, N.J.). Sophomores Ali Coad (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Maggie Duszlak (Burlington, N.C.) will also see some time as a defender, but will also play in the midfield. The only Phoenix player to start all 19 matches last season, Norwind will be expected to anchor the Elon defense this year. She recorded one assist as a sophomore. Griffith made 17 appearances, including 11 starts, while Deutschle, Braun, Maturo and Waggoner all appeared in at least 11 contests and are more experienced this year. Klara, a transfer from Centenary College, started twice and saw time in 16 games as a freshman. Keller, Duke and Winans will help shore up the Elon back line. Midfielders In the midfield, Elon features seniors Katina Boozer (Charlottesville, Va.), Katie Persichini (Hudson, Ohio) and Kerri Speers (Homestead, Fla.) along side junior Morgan Wallace (Edwards, Colo.). Sophomore Alanna Winsper (Virginia Beach, Va.) also returns for the Phoenix. They will be joined by freshmen Nikki Heilman (Leawood, Kan.), Mabry Williams (Wake Forest, N.C.) and Andrea Brooke (Salisbury, Md.). Coad and Duszlak will see action in the midfield as will junior Alix Heinicke (Bay Village, Ohio) and sophomore Amanda Jones (Roswell, Ga.), who will also play as forwards. Boozer, who will also see action as a forward, returns after leading Elon with seven goals and 15 points during her junior campaign. Persichini, a defensive central midfielder, appeared in 19 games, scoring one goal and tallying three assists. Speers was tied for second on the team with eight points and three goals, including the game-winner in a league victory over Chattanooga. Winsper started 12 matches while Duszlak saw time in 19 tilts as freshmen. Winsper finished the year with one goal and one assist. In her 16 games last year, Heinicke recorded two assists. Wallace adds depth to the position after seeing limited action last season. Jones is coming off an injury which kept her out the entire 2007 campaign. Coad will miss the year with a knee injury. Neal will look for his freshman class to step in and contribute in the midfield. Forwards Elon’s forwards are led by two seniors, Susannah Gianakos (Charlottesville, Va.) and Jessica Weaver (West Chester, Pa.). Molly Calpin (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Heinicke are the lone juniors in the group while Jones, Brittany Hallberg (Richmond, Va.) and Taylor Harlan (Naples, Fla.) make up the sophomore class. New to that group this year will be freshman Noell McCain (Burlington, N.C.). A year ago, Gianakos and Weaver tallied one assist each while Calpin finished the season with eight points and a team-best four assists. One of her two scores was a game-winner. Head Coach 36-22-4 Career Record (Three Years) 0-0-0 Elon Record (First Year) Chris Neal was named the new Phoenix head women’s soccer coach in January of 2008 after spend-
ing the previous seven seasons as an assistant at UNC Wilmington. The UNCW graduate earned his bachelor of arts degree as a political science major and a Spanish minor in 1995 and his master of education degree in education administration and supervision at Augusta State University in 1998. He holds the National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America “Premier” diploma and the United States Soccer Federation “A” license – both the highest level possible. Neal recently completed his seventh season working with the UNCW Seahawks. During that time (2001-07), UNCW compiled a 70-55-8 (.556) record and earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award for five consecutive campaigns. Prior to returning to his alma mater in 2001, Neal enjoyed a successful stint as the head men’s soccer coach at Pfeiffer University. In his three seasons at Pfeiffer (1998-2000), Neal directed the Falcons to a 36-22-4 (.613) ledger and their first-ever NCAA Division II ranking at 13th in the country. Prior to heading up the Pfeiffer program, Neal served two campaigns as an assistant men’s soccer coach at Augusta State (1996-97), where he helped the Jaguars improve from a 7-8 record in 1996 to a 14-6 slate in 1997. Neal has also served the NSCAA as its state technical director since 2001. In this role, he is responsible for organizing, advertising and instructing a variety of coaching education courses for hundreds of youth, high school and college coaches. Neal is also a USSF April Heinrichs Scholarship recipient, recognizing him for making a positive impact on the sport of women’s soccer. During his senior year of high school and freshman year of college, a series of knee injuries sidelined Neal’s competitive playing days. As a goalkeeper, Neal was a product of the Wilmington United and Cape Fear SA club teams, as well as New Hanover High School where he earned allconference honors. Stuart Horne
Assistant Coach Stuart Horne came to Elon in 2005 after spending five years as the head women’s soccer coach at
Chowan University, where he inherited a program that regularly dwelled near the bottom of the NCAA Division III ranks. Under his leadership, the Chowan program improved every year, culminating in a NSCAA South Region top-15 ranking in 2004. Horne guided the Braves to their first-ever postseason berth with a trip to the 2003 USA South Athletic Conference Tournament. The following year, Chowan captured the NCCAA South Region title and advanced to the Final Four of the 2004 NCCAA Tournament. The Braves capped that campaign with a 13-6-4 record and the NCCAA No. 3 national ranking as Horne was crowned the 2004 NCCAA South Region Coach of the Year. Horne left Chowan with a program-record 44 victories. From 2002-04, Horne served as an assistant for the Hampton Roads Piranhas, a member of the United Soccer League’s W-League. He helped direct the team to playoff appearances each of those three seasons. The Piranhas finished the 2003 season 14-0 on their way to claiming the W- League national title. Horne has been involved with the Olympic Development Program in both Virginia and North Carolina. In Virginia, he was a staff coach with the girls’ program in the Southeast District. Horne ran the North Carolina ODP Training Center on the Outer Banks. He has earned both the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and the USSF D License. 1999 Women’s Soccer Team – Elon’s First-Ever NCAA Division I Tournament Participant
In Elon’s first year of NCAA Division I play, the women’s soccer team claimed the Big South Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s College Cup by defeating top-seeded Liberty 3-2 in overtime in the league tournament’s championship game. The team, led by head coach Paul Webster, then faced Duke in Durham, N.C. in the College Cup. After claiming an early 1-0 advantage, Elon fell by a 3-1 margin to the Blue Devils.
