The Southern Conference, which begins its 87th season of intercollegiate competition in 2007, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the studentathlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. The Southern Conference has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision league. Southern Conference member Appalachian State has won the last two Football Championship Subdivision national titles. The conference currently consists of 11 members in four states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected fromSoCon institutions. The Southern Conference office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. The Southern Conference was formed on February 25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. as 14 institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. Those charter members included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of 1921. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans four states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. On July 1, 2008, Samford will officially join the league, bringing membership of the conference to 12. John Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006. Previously, Iamarino served as commissioner of the Northeast Conference. In nine years with the New Jersey-based league, Iamarino promoted the conference through an ambitious agenda which improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions. The Southern Conference named its first commissioner in December 1950. Duke head football coach Wallace Wade made the transition from Blue Devil football coach to athletics administration as the first person at the helm of the conference. The first Southern Conference championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. The Southern Conference currently declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

The Legend of the Phoenix

Throughout history there is told the legend of the rare and remarkable Phoenix, a crimson and gold bird that lived 500 years. It was sleek, swift and strong — the most marvelous bird ever created by human imagination. At the end of its life, with death approaching, it built a nest in an oak tree and was consumed in flames ignited by the sun. From the ashes emerged the next Phoenix — reborn and renewed, with strength forged in fire.

Fire, too, has shaped the history of Elon University. The disastrous fire of 1923 all but destroyed Elon. Gone were Main Building, college records, classrooms, the library and the chapel. But within days of the fire, Elon trustees set in motion the plan for Elon to rise from the ashes, stronger than ever.

The Phoenix is a powerful leader and an emblem of immortality. It is a perfect symbol for a school that is constantly renewing and recreating itself.

The Elon motto, Numen Lumen, embraces intellectual and spiritual light. And so too, throughout history, the Phoenix has served as a symbol of light and knowledge.

The Phoenix is timeless and unique. It perfectly describes an athletics program and an institution that are rising to new levels of excellence.

There is only one Phoenix. There is only one Elon. Catch the Fire!

Academic Progress/Athletic Training

Elon University Athletics is proactive in ensuring the graduation of its student-athletes. One way Elon promotes the committment to acadmics is through the academic enhancement program. The AEP provides an opportunity for students to excel with the help of tutors and an academic progress counselor. Elon provides each student-athlete with the necessary help and support needed to be academically successful at Elon University. All freshman student-athletes and select upperclassmen participate in the AEP. The academic progress and class attendance of student-athletes in the AEP are monitored, progress reports are mailed to professors once each semester and midterm and final grades are checked. Workshops aimed at enhancing a student-athlete's personal, academic and career development are also offered. In addition to the academic support provided by Elon Athletics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the student-athlete experience. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council is an organization for student-athletes, run by student-athletes, to provide an opportunity for student-athletes to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Burlington communities. Of the more than 400 student-athletes, athletic trainers, cheerleaders and dance team members at Elon last spring, 206 made the Athletics Director's Honor Roll, which recognizes those students with a semester GPA of 3.0 or better. In addition, 99 athletes achieved either the President's List or the Dean's List honors last spring.

UNIVERSITY LEADERS

Dr. Leo M. Lambert, President

Leo M. Lambert became Elon University’s eighth president on Jan. 1, 1999. His tenure has been marked by the successful completion of a $46.7 million capital campaign, the opening of Belk Library, the construction of Rhodes Stadium and the transition to university status. He has provided leadership for the conception of the NewCentury@Elon strategic plan, which guides Elon’s efforts to become one of the nation’s premier small, selective, undergraduate universities. Chair of the executive committee of North Carolina Campus Compact, a coalition of college and university presidents committed to the civic purposes of higher education, Lambert also heads the president’s council of Project Pericles, an initiative to promote socially responsible citizenship among college and university students. He has written extensively about post-secondary education and has spearheaded several national projects aimed at improving college and university teaching, including the Future Professoriate Project, which he founded at Syracuse University. Lambert has been a member of the boards of the American Council on Education and the American Association for Higher Education. In 1998, Change magazine named him one of the nation’s outstanding young leaders in higher education. Lambert graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in English from the State University of New York at Geneseo. He earned a master’s degree in education at the University of Vermont in Burlington and a doctorate in education from Syracuse. He and his wife, Laurie, both natives of Scotia, New York, have two daughters, Callie and Mollie.

Dave Blank, Director of Athletics

Dave Blank enters his second year as the Elon University Director of Athletics for the 2007-08 campaign, following a year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. Blank also engineered staff expansion in the Department of Athletics – including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club – and set a plan in motion for future facility improvements. Under Blank’s direction, 10 of Elon's 16 teams fashioned better winning percentages and higher Southern Conference finishes last year than in the previous campaign. Last year also saw the Phoenix forge the school’s best SoCon finishes in football, women’s cross country and women’s tennis, record the program’s first winning men's soccer season at the Division I level and post SoCon regular season and tournament championships in men’s tennis, claiming 14 consecutive victories before falling to Clemson in NCAA postseason action. Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006, arriving on the scene just in time to witness the Phoenix capture the SoCon men’s basketball North Division crown, a SoCon men’s tennis regular season co-championship and the outright SoCon baseball regular season title. Prior to coming to Elon, Blank spent six years as the Director of Athletics at Drake University. At Drake, Blank directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was responsible for the creation of a comprehensive academic assistance program and a new Life Skills program for student-athletes, encouraging participation in community activities and career development. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade-point average of 3.0 or above. Blank oversaw the addition of the women’s crew, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs at Drake. Facility enhancements were a priority during his tenure at Drake, including upgrades in the softball complex, renovation of the strength and conditioning facilities and new locker rooms for several sports. Under Blank’s guidance, Drake completed a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium, which hosts football, soccer, track and field events as well as the nationally known Drake Relays. He restructured the Bulldog Club, which provides financial support for Drake athletics, resulting in a 90-percent increase in gifts. He also enhanced the marketing of Drake athletics to generate additional exposure and corporate donations. Blank served as chairman of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Committee and was a member of the NCAA IAA Governance Committee and Football Issues Committee. He received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation in 2005. Before moving to Drake in 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). Blank directed the CINO Club, increasing fiscal contributions to Coastal Carolina athletics by more than 200 percent. He spearheaded efforts to raise more than $4 million to establish an intercollegiate football program at the university, which began play in 2003. Before moving into athletics administration, Blank spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in Lock Haven history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. Blank began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of South Carolina for three seasons (1982-85). He then served Wofford College for a year (1985-86) as Assistant Director of Athletics and assistant basketball coach before working a two-season stint (1986-88) as an assistant basketball coach at Lock Haven. A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from South Carolina in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration (finance). He earned a master of science degree in business administration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children – Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis.

PHOENIX COACHES

C HRIS W EBB H EAD C OACH

Chris Webb took over the Phoenix women's soccer head coaching position in February 2005. Webb came to Elon after serving as an assistant coach at East Carolina University for five seasons. During her first season at the helm of the program, Webb guided the Phoenix to a 5-11-3 overall mark and a 3-6-1 Southern Conference record. Her squad posted a 6-11-2 ledger last fall and went 3-5-2 in league play to earn a spot in the SoCon Tournament for the third straight season. That squad also boasted Elon’s first-ever All-SoCon selection in women’s soccer – defender Monica Houseworth who earned second team honors. In her time with the Pirates, Webb helped the program to a fourth-place Conference USA finish in 2004. She assisted in all aspects of the East Carolina program. Prior to joining the ECU staff, Webb served as both an assistant and interim head coach at Campbell University from 1998-2000. She also directed the Campbell JV squad during that time as well. Webb began her collegiate coaching career as an assistant at North Carolina Wesleyan University, her alma mater, in 1996. She remained at there until taking the position at Campbell. Between 2000 and 2005, Webb assisted with the Under-15 North Carolina ODP team. In 2006, she served as the head coach of the Under-14 squad. She has also coached the Greenville Stars club team. During the summer of 2006, Webb and assistant coach Stuart Horne, served as the co-head coaches for the Carolina Dynamo of the W-League. The 1996 North Carolina Wesleyan graduate holds a bachelor's degree in justice and public policy. She earned her master’s of education degree from Campbell in 2001. A four-year starter at N.C. Wesleyan, Webb helped the Battlin’ Bishops to four NCAA Division III Tournaments, including an appearance in the 1994 NCAA-III Final Four. A four-time NSCAA All-South Region and All-Dixie Conference choice, Webb graduated as the program's all-time leader in both goals and points.

S TUART H ORNE A SSISTANT C OACH

Stuart Horne came to Elon in 2005 after spending five years as the head women’s soccer coach at Chowan University, where he inherited a program that regularly dwelled near the bottom of the NCAA Division III ranks. Under his leadership, the Chowan program improved every year, culminating in a NSCAA South Region top15 ranking in 2004. Horne guided the Braves to their first-ever postseason berth with a trip to the 2003 USA South Athletic Conference Tournament. The following year, Chowan captured the NCCAA South Region title and advanced to the Final Four of the 2004 NCCAA Tournament. The Braves capped that campaign with a 13-6-4 record and the NCCAA No. 3 national ranking as Horne was crowned the 2004 NCCAA South Region Coach of the Year. Horne left Chowan with a program-record 44 victories. From 2002-04, Horne served as an assistant for the Hampton Roads Piranhas, a member of the United Soccer League’s W-League. He helped direct the team to playoff appearances each of those three seasons. The Piranhas finished the 2003 season 14-0 on their way to claiming the W- League national title. 2007 OUTLOOK

Coach Chris Webb enters her third season at the helm of the Phoenix women’s soccer squad, looking to continue to build the program into a Southern Conference contender. Webb is confident that Elon is heading in that direction thanks, in part, to this year’s freshman class which was rated as the second-best in the SoCon and 20th in the Southeast by Soccer Buzz. The 2007 edition of the Phoenix sports just one senior, seven juniors, nine sophomores and 12 freshmen.

Senior Class Goalkeeper Kaitlin Lannon (Tinton Falls, N.J.) is Elon’s lone senior this year. Lannon has worked as a back-up throughout her career, appearing in one match last year. Her leadership will be a much-needed quality on this young team.

Junior Class Katina Boozer (Charlottesville, Va.) is the team’s leading returning scorer, having netted three goals and added one assist last season. Boozer, a midfielder/forward, will be looked to for increased production this year.

Webb will also rely heavily on midfielder/defender Kerri Speers (Homestead, Fla.), defender/midfielder/forward Katie Persichini (Hudson, Ohio) and forward Susannah Gianakos (Charlottesville, Va.) on the offensive end. Speers battled injuries a year ago, but led the Phoenix in scoring her freshman season. One of only four players to start every match in 2006, Persichini and Gianakos each tallied one assist in their sophomore campaigns. Persichini’s defensive prowess will also prove to be a vital asset to the 2007 team. Forward/midfielder Stacie Ledford (Raleigh, N.C.) and forward Jessica Weaver (West Chester, Pa.) both add depth to the Pheonix attack.

Elon’s starting goalkeeper is also a member of the junior class. Lizz Johnson (Miami, Fla.) stopped 85 shots in 17 games as a sophomore. She is expected to begin the year in net again.

Sophomore Class The sophomore class represents the Elon class that rated 19th in the region and 94th in the nation by Soccer Buzz last year. Those players contributed immediately in 2006 and will be expected to continue to step up their games in 2007.

Forward Molly Calpin (Alpharetta, Ga.) was the team’s third-leading scorer as a freshman, netting three goals. Defender/midfielder Meagan Aho (Matthews, N.C.) and defender/midfielder/forward Alix Heinicke (Bay Village, Ohio) were the only other two members of this class to record a point last year. All three should figure into Elon’s scoring threat again in 2007. Defender/midfielder Lauren Griffith (Atlanta, Ga.), midfielder/defender Morgan Wallace (Edwards, Colo.), defender/midfielder Laura Norwind (Darnestown, Md.) and midfielder Maisie Leach (Salem, Va.) all appeared in at least 10 matches as true freshmen and will compete for more action this year. Midfielder Tricia Serdy (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) made eight appearances last season and will red-shirt this season to recover from an injury.

The final sophomore is goalie Lauren Wisniewski (Fairless Hills, Pa.) who was the number two keeper in 2006. Wisniewski started two games, posted one shutout and made a total of 19 saves as a freshman. She also had one shutout. Wisniewski should push Johnson for time in goal this fall.

Freshman Class Another highly regarded freshman class enters Elon this fall and is expected to contribute immediately. This 12-member class represents eight states and was rated second in the SoCon and 20th in the region by Soccer Buzz.

Joining the Phoenix this year will be: Meghan Braun (Glenelg, Md.), Ali Coad (Alpharetta, Ga.), Megan Deutschle (Burlington, N.C.), Maggie Duszlak (Burlington, N.C.), Brittany Hallberg (Richmond, Va.), Taylor Harlan (Miami Springs, Fla.), Amanda Jones (Roswell, Ga.), Maria Maturo (Stratford, Conn.), Liz Payne (Virginia Beach, Va.), Lia Shuford (Birmingham, Ala.), Kyle Waggoner (Overland Park, Kan.) and Alanna Winsper (Virginia Beach, Va.). 2007 Phoenix Women's Soccer - 19

In Elon’s first year of NCAA Division I play, the women’s soccer team claimed the Big South Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s College Cup by defeating top-seeded Liberty 3-2 in overtime in the league tournament’s championship game. The team then faced Duke in Durham, N.C. in the College Cup. After claiming an early 1-0 advantage, Elon fell by a 3-1 margin to the Blue Devils. It was the first NCAA Division I tournament appearance by any Elon team.
