EELON UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT Dr. Leo M. Lambert became Elon University’s eighth president on Jan. 1, 1999. His tenure has been m marked by the successful completion of a $46.7 million capital campaign, the opening of Belk Library, tthe construction of Rhodes Stadium and the transition to university status. He has provided leadership for the conception of the NewCentury@Elon strategic plan, which will guide Elon’s efforts to become fo one of the nation’s premier small, selective, undergraduate universities. o Chair of the executive committee of North Carolina Campus Compact, a coalition of college and university presidents committed to the civic purposes of higher education, Lambert also heads the u president’s council of Project Pericles, an initiative to promote socially responsible citizenship among p ccollege and university students. He has written extensively about post-secondary education and has spearheaded several nationa national projects aimed at improving college and university teaching, including the Future Professoriate Project, which he founded at Syracuse University. Lambert has been a member of the boards of the American Council on Education and the American Association for Higher Education. In 1998, he was honored by Change magazine as one of the nation’s outstanding young leaders in higher education. Lambert graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in English from the State University of New York at Geneseo. He earned a master’s degree in education at the University of Vermont in Burlington and a doctorate in education from Syracuse. He and his wife, Laurie, both natives of Scotia, N.Y., have two daughters, Callie and Mollie.

DAVE BLANK DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Administration

Dave Blank enters his second year as the Elon University Director of Athletics for the 2007-08 campaign, following a year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. Blank also engineered staff expansion in the Department of Athletics - including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club - and set a plan in motion for future facility improvements. Under Blank’s direction, 10 of Elon’s 16 teams fashioned better winning percentages and higher Southern Conference finishes last year than in the previous campaign. Last year also saw the Phoenix forge the school’s best SoCon finishes in football, women’s cross country and women’s tennis, record the program’s first winning men’s soccer season at the Division I level and post SoCon regular season and tournament championships in men’s tennis, claiming 14 consecutive victories before falling to Clemson in NCAA postseason action. Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006, arriving on the scene just in time to witness the Phoenix capture the SoCon men’s basketball North Division crown, a SoCon men’s tennis regular season co-championship h h and d the outright SoCon baseball regular season title. Prior to coming to Elon, Blank spent six years as the Director of Athletics at Drake University. At Drake, Blank directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was responsible for the creation of a comprehensive academic assistance program and a new Life Skills program for student-athletes, encouraging participation in community activities and career development. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade-point average of 3.0 or above. Blank oversaw the addition of the women’s crew, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs at Drake. Facility enhancements were a priority during his tenure at Drake, including upgrades in the softball complex, renovation of the strength and conditioning facilities and new locker rooms for several sports. Under Blank’s guidance, Drake completed a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium, which hosts football, soccer, track and field events as well as the nationally known Drake Relays. He restructured the Bulldog Club, which provides financial support for Drake athletics, resulting in a 90-percent increase in gifts. He also enhanced the marketing of Drake athletics to generate additional exposure and corporate donations. Blank served as chairman of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Committee and was a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance Committee and Football Issues Committee. He received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation in 2005. Before moving to Drake in 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). Blank directed the CINO Club, increasing fiscal contributions to Coastal Carolina athletics by more than 200 percent. He spearheaded efforts to raise more than $4 million to establish an intercollegiate football program at the university, which began play in 2003. Before moving into athletics administration, Blank spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in Lock Haven history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. Blank began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of South Carolina for three seasons (1982-85). He then served Wofford College for a year (1985-86) as Assistant Director of Athletics and assistant basketball coach before working a twoseason stint (1986-88) as an assistant basketball coach at Lock Haven. A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from South Carolina in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration (finance). He earned a master of science degree in business administration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children - Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis.

Elon University Athletics is proactive in ensuring the graduation of its studentathletes. One way Elon promotes the committment to acadmics is through the academic enhancement program. The AEP provides an opportunity for students to excel with the help of tutors and an academic progress counselor. Elon provides each student-athlete with the necessary help and support needed to be academically successful at Elon University.

Academic Support

All freshman student-athletes and select upperclassmen participate in the AEP. The academic progress and class attendance of student-athletes in the AEP are monitored, progress reports are mailed to professors once each semester and mid-term and final grades are checked. Workshops aimed at enhancing a student-athlete’s personal, academic and career development are also offered. In addition to the academic support provided by Elon Athletics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the student-athlete experience. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council is an organization for student-athletes, run by student-athletes, to provide an opportunity for student-athletes to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Burlington communities. Of the more than 400 student-athletes, athletic trainers, cheerleaders and dance team members at Elon last spring, 206 made the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll, which recognizes those students with a semester GPA of 3.0 or better. In addition, 99 athletes achieved either the President’s List or the Dean’s List honors last spring.

Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach The Southern Conference The Southern Conference, which began its 87th season of intercollegiate competition in 2007, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. The Southern Conference has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision conference. Southern Conference member Appalachian State University captured the last two Football Championship Subdivision titles. The Conference currently consists of 11 members in four states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from SoCon institutions. The Southern Conference office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill

was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.

25th Anniversary of Women’s Championships The Southern Conference will celebrate 25 years of women’s championships in 2007-08. A year-long celebration of women’s sports will highlight student-athletes, coaches and teams. Commissioner Ken Germann spearheaded the Southern Conference’s expansion to include women’s athletics. The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women’s athletics have become an integral part of the Southern Conference and its success. The league crowns champions in nine women’s sports including cross country, soccer, volleyball, indoor track & field, basketball, tennis, golf, outdoor track & field and softball.

Strength & Conditioning/The Southern Conference

Megan McCollum

To achieve top condition for a high level of competition, Elon University student-athletes need a state-of-the-art weight room. A facility located in the Koury Center provides Phoenix teams with that weight room. Aaron Walker, in his third year at Elon, heads up Elon’s strength and conditioning program. Previously, he served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of North Carolina. The 2002 East Carolina University graduate started 36 contests — including three bowl games — for the Pirates’ football squad before earning defensive MVP honors for the Assindia Cardinals of the German Football League. Assisting Walker is Megan McCollum, who is in her fourth year with the Phoenix. McCollum came to Elon after serving an internship at Wake Forest where she helped implement strength and conditioning programs. She obtained her master’s degree in sports physiology from Texas A&M University in August of 2004. McCollum earned her bachelor’s degree from N.C. State University in 2002. The goal of the training program is to enhance a student-athlete’s performance by improving their strength, power, agility and conditioning.

Returning four starters and eight letterwinners while welcoming five newcomers for the 2007 campaign, Elon looks to build upon last year’s 13-18 record and 9-9 mark in Southern Conference play. Coach Mary Tendler hopes that a solid defense will spark a Phoenix that is active and highly competitive. “The 2007 team is a very talented group,” said Tendler. “We have a great mix of experienced returners and eager newcomers. It will be exciting in practice to watch the competition for starting positions and playing time.”

2007 Season Outlook

Elon returns two players at the middle blocker position while two freshmen will also compete for time in the middle. The Phoenix returns starting senior middle blocker Emily Lucci (Solon, Ohio/Solon) along with junior Stefanie Meyers (Columbus, Ohio/ Bishop Watterson). During the 2006 campaign, Lucci tallied 92 total blocks, including 13 solo, along with 202 kills, 287 digs and 26 service aces. Meyers saw action in 26 matches last season, starting nine, and recorded 124 kills and 10 service aces. Freshmen Sarah Schermerhorn (Colfax, N.C./Southwest Guilford) and Jo Beth Stoddard (Midlothian, Va./Collegiate a./Collegiate School) will also vie for action in the middle. Schermerhorn, a Wendy’s High School Heisman nominee, earned North Carolina 3A State Championship MVP honors and Piedmont Triad 3A Player of the Year accolades. Her senior season, she finished with 258 kills, 41 blocks and 134 digs. Stoddard was named allstate twice and All-League of Independent Schools twice. She was named First Team All-Metro her senior year by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The Phoenix returns two starting outside hitters in senior Britany Westphal (Herndon, Va./ Herndon) and junior Jessica Barrow (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston). A powerful hitter, Westphal returns after playing all 31 matches for the Phoenix a season ago and pacing the squad with 360 kills while also registering 17 service aces and 40 total blocks. Barrow is coming off a break-out season in which she posted 244 kills in 30 matches and added 27 service aces and 29 total blocks. Barrow led the team with a career-high 19 kills in Elon’s upset of SoCon champion College of Charleston on Oct. 15. Junior transfer Kelley Blakewood (Gainsville, Fla./North Carolina State) could also contribute as an outside hitter. In her sophomore season with the Wolfpack last year, Blakewood posted 95 kills. Sophomore Mandy Wilson (Raleigh, N.C./North Raleigh Christian Academy) also returns as an outside and right side hitter. In her freshman campaign, Wilson tallied 148 kills, 17 aces and 40 total blocks. A very strong hitter, Wilson is expected to compete for a starting position. Freshman Lauren Copenhagen (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis-Mountain View) will also battle for time as an outside and right side hitter. As a captain of her Vision Volleyball Club team, Copenhagen helped guide her team to a bronze medal at Junior Olympic Nationals and was honored with all-tournament accolades. Elon welcomes back two experienced setters as senior Natalie Moore (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) and sophomore Emily Regan (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) both return after playing a vital role for the Phoenix in 2006. Moore appeared in all 31 matches, starting 26, and posted 995 assists as well as 25 service aces, 168 digs and 29 total blocks. Regan saw time in 29 matches and started five contests for the Phoenix in her freshman season, posting 360 assists along with 93 digs. Elon returns one defensive specialist and welcomes two new defensive players. Junior Shelley MacBean (Peachtree City, Ga./ Starr’s Mill) returns after playing in 30 matches last season and recording 267 digs. Blakewood will also compete for action as a defensive specialist. In two seasons at North Carolina State, she tallied 421 digs, including 222 during her sophomore season. Freshman Lizzie West (Apex, N.C./Apex) will also help the Elon defense. An all-conference and all-region selection, West helped guide her team to a 4A State Regional Cha Championship in 2006. “Our ball control and defensive intensity will be the best it has been in the last four years,” ad added Tendler. “When we are active on defense, we are an exciting team to watch and a tough te team to beat.” The 2007 campaign begins Aug. 24-25 as the Phoenix will travel to Durham, N.C. for the CVAC/ CIA CIAA Challenge with matches against South Carolina State, Loyola College and host North Carolin lina Central. Elon will host the second annual Phoenix Classic Aug. 31 - Sept. 1 as East Tennessee St State, Radford and Morehead State invade Alumni Gym. The Phoenix will then head to Chicago Se Sept. 7-8 for the Illinois-Chicago Invitational, facing Southland Conference Tournament runner-up M McNeese State, North Dakota State and host Illinois-Chicago. A week later, Elon will travel to Harris risonburg, Va., for the JMU/Days Inn Invitational at James Madison. The Phoenix will play matches ag against Florida Gulf Coast, Charleston Southern and host JMU. Elon will return to Alumni Gym Sept. 18 as it opens Southern Conference play versus Georgia Southern. The Phoenix will host a total to of nine SoCon matches and are slated to play nine SoCon road contests during the regular season, including a home-and-home with defending SoCon Champion College of Charleston. The Phoenix will also travel to High Point Sept. 25 and will play host to North Carolina A&T on Oct. 9 in non-conference action. The squad will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Southern Conference Tournament on Nov. 15-18. “The Southern Conference is going to be very strong this year,” noted Tendler. “Every year the teams get better and better. After going through our preseason tournaments, we will be ready for the challenge.”

In her second year, Tendler directed Elon to its first winning season in seven campaigns with an 18-14 record, including a 10-6 Southern Conference ledger for a second-place finish in the league’s North Division. In Tendler’s first season, she guided the Phoenix to a 14-19 mark, five more wins than the previous year. She also led the team through its first year in the SoCon, posting a 7-11 slate in the league that year. The three seasons before joining the Elon staff, Tendler served as an assistant coach at James Madison University, helping to lead the Dukes to a Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament appearance. Tendler, who played at the University of Illinois as Mary Eggers from 1985-88, went to James Madison from Drake University where she was an assistant during the 1999 season on the staff of her husband, Blaine Tendler. She was an assistant the five years prior at Illinois State. During this span, the Redbirds claimed a share of a Missouri Valley Conference regular season title and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament and NIVC Tournament. Before her coaching career, Tendler spent a year-and-a-half playing with the USA Olympic team and then spent two years playing professionally in Europe. She played for the Schwerte Volleyball Club in Germany in 1991 and the Francheville Volleyball Club in France in 1992. A superior middle blocker during her playing days at Illinois, she was named a three-time first-team All-American as well as the 1989 Honda Broderick Award winner as the nation’s top volleyball player. A four-time first team All-Big Ten selection, Tendler was the league’s Freshman of the Year in 1985 and the Most Valuable Player in 1986, 1987, and 1988.

A former three-time first-team All-American and professional volleyball player, Mary Tendler enters her fifth season at the helm of the Phoenix.

2007 Elon Phoenix Volleyball Tendler led the nation in hitting percentage in 1986 and 1988, setting an NCAA record with her .455 mark in 1986. Her .420 career se hitting percentage stood as the NCAA record until 1993 and curhi rently ranks third all time. Tendler finished her career with 1,761 re kills ki and only 326 errors on 3,417 attempts. She still ranks fourth in the NCAA in season hitting percentage and fifth for consecutive matches played with 151. m She holds Fighting Illini career records in attack percentage, aces, ac blocks and kills. She was named the school’s Female Athlete of the Decade for the 1980s.

Excerpts from Q&A with Mary Tendler

Coaching Staﬀ

(This Q&A can be found in its entirety at www.elonphoenix.com.) EP: In 1986 and 1988, you led the country in hitting percentage and one of those seasons still stands as a top-five percentage in the NCAA. Your career hitting percentage of .420, which stood as an NCAA record for five seasons, currently ranks third. Just talk about that and the importance of hitting percentage and what it means as a player and in the sport. MT: First of all, I didn’t know it was top-three all time! I played as a middle blocker and it’s a little easier to get a higher percentage playing in the middle than it is for an outside hitter. The setter has a lot of choices when they go to set the ball and if you want to get more sets you become more efficient and the setter will go to you more often. I was really fortunate that I played on a team that had really good passing and for a middle to be able to hit you need to have really good passers. So the setter was able to get me the ball a lot and I was able to find some holes in the defense. I wasn’t necessarily a power hitter, I was a smart hitter and I had really good vision to see the court and where the openings were. EP: You followed up your Big Ten Freshman of the Year recognition with three Big Ten Player of the Year honors, three First Team All-American accolades and the Honda National Player of the Year award following your senior season. What did those awards mean to you? Were those goals you set for yourself? MT: No. I mean, once our team got into the top-20, I wanted to play on a team that won the National Championship – that was the ultimate goal. We came short of that; we got two third-place finishes, losing to Hawaii both years. So it was a little disappointing. The teams that do well, they look for a player on those teams to give the All-American awards to and the MVP. So without being on a successful team and having good coaches I would never have gotten those awards. It was kind of neat that I played on such a close knit team that I would win an award and sometime I think my teammates were more excited than I was. It was cool to be in that sort of atmosphere. EP: How did you decide you wanted to go into coaching? MT: M Early on, I never knew I wanted to be a coach. I was a business administration major. But I had such good experiences – in college, with m the th national team – and such good coaches that I wanted to try to give back ba and hopefully give my players some of those same experiences. EP: EP What do you think are some of the most important things that you try to teach your players and help them to understand? MT: M I think, the important thing is that you enjoy what you are doing on the th volleyball court. And to realize that volleyball is a game. And that you yo can have fun and work hard at the same time. And if you are doing that, th you are going to win matches. At St. Andrews, Clifton helped lead a team that was an NCAA Division II Tournament qualifier and achieved a regional ranking of seventh. Before his stint at St. Andrews, Clifton served as the head coach at Jack Britt High School in Fayetteville, N.C. for three seasons. His overall record at Jack Britt was 62-20, including a 28-2 season. Clifton was a three-time Mid-Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year and the Cape Fear Region Coach of the Year in 2003. His 2002 and 2003 squads were conference champions and state tournament participants. Clifton also serves as the head coach for Carolina Region High Performance. He enters his sixth season with the program this year — his fifth as head coach. In 2003 and 2004, he served as the head coach of the developmental team before becoming the head coach of a youth team in 2005. Clifton also spent three seasons with the Fayetteville Area Volleyball Association as a head coach. His 17-under team won the Carolina Regional Championship and three other tournaments in 2002. Clifton graduated with a bachelor of science degree in athletic training from Appalachian State University in 1994 where he played for the men’s volleyball club. He earned his master of exercise and sport science degree from the University of Florida in 1996. Clifton and his wife, Jennifer, have one child, Abby.
