Media guide Dr. Leo Lambert President Elon University

Administration

Leo M. Lambert became Elon’s eighth president in January 1999. Very early in his tenure, his responsibilities included completing the Elon Vision strategic plan, including the construction of Rhodes Stadium and the opening of Belk Library. Today, Lambert’s work focuses on an ambitious new strategic vision which aims to place Elon, with a national reputation for engaged learning, among the nation’s best small, selective, private universities. Substantial progress has been achieved toward realizing this goal. The academic climate of the campus has been strengthened by endowed programs such as the Kenan Honors Fellowships, the Baird Pulitzer Prize Lectures and the Isabella Cannon Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Leadership. He has led efforts to more than double expenditures for library acquisitions, increase faculty sabbatical opportunities and improve Elon’s position in Division I athletics by joining the Southern Conference. Lambert has been committed to further strengthening Elon’s renowned programs of experiential learning, and the results have included top national rankings for Elon’s study abroad, volunteer service, undergraduate research and leadership programs. Lambert has provided national leadership in efforts such as Campus Compact and Project Pericles, which encourage students to become civically engaged in their communities. During his tenure, the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business has attained AACSB International accreditation, the School of Communications has achieved accreditation by ACEJMC and the Elon University School of Law, which opened in Greensboro in 2006, achieved American Bar Association provisional approval in 2008. Recent new campus facilities have included the Ernest A. Koury Sr. Business Center, the Academic Village, The Colonnades dining hall and residence halls, The Oaks residence complex and Belk Track and White Field. Lambert has written extensively about post-secondary education and is co-editor of a book about university teaching that was published by the Syracuse University Press in 2005. His alma mater, the State University of New York, awarded him an honorary doctorate of human letters in 2002 in recognition of exceptional achievements in higher education. Lambert’s greatest honor in life, in collaboration with his wife Laurie, has been the privilege of parenting two daughters, Callie, a student at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Mollie, a student at Furman University.

Administration

Dave Blank Director of Athletics Third Year Dave Blank begins his third year as the Elon University Director of Athletics for the 2008-09 campaign, following another year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in terms of athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. During his first two years at Elon, he has ignited ambitious expansions in the Department of Athletics – including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club with emphasis on funding scholarships for student-athletes, a restructuring of the academic assistance program for athletics in conjunction with the Office of the Provost and a plan for future facility improvements, including an already completed renovation and expansion of the Latham Park baseball facility. In June 2008, Blank was appointed to serve on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet – a 31-member cabinet consisting of athletics directors, senior woman administrators and faculty athletic representatives representing the nation’s multi-sport Division I conferences which will help shape the future of Division I athletics. Under Blank’s direction, 12 of Elon’s 16 teams fashioned higher Southern Conference finishes during the 2007-08 season than they did during the 2006-07 campaign. What makes that fact even more impressive is that 10 Phoenix squads achieved a higher SoCon finish during the 2006-07 season than they did during the previous campaign. In 2007-08, the Phoenix baseball team went on to claim SoCon outright regular season and tournament crowns en route to making the program’s third NCAA regional appearance in seven seasons. Also, Elon fell one mere victory shy of capturing the SoCon’s automatic NCAA postseason bid in football, men’s basketball and men’s tennis. During the 2006-07 season, Elon notched its first winning record in men’s soccer at the Division I level and posted SoCon outright regular season and tournament titles and an NCAA postseason appearance in men’s tennis. The Phoenix men’s soccer (2006), football (2007 and 2008), men’s tennis (2007 and 2008) and baseball (2008) teams have all earned national rankings during Blank’s time at Elon. Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006 after spending six years as the Director of Athletics at Drake University. At Drake, he directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was responsible for the creation of a comprehensive academic assistance program. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade-point average of 3.0 or above. Also, Blank oversaw the addition of the women’s crew, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs at Drake. Facility enhancements were a priority during his tenure at Drake, including upgrades in the softball complex, renovation of the strength and conditioning facilities and new locker rooms for several sports. Under Blank’s guidance, Drake completed a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium, which hosts football, soccer and track and field events as well as the nationally known Drake Relays. He restructured the Bulldog Club, which provides financial support for Drake athletics, resulting in a 90-percent increase in gifts. He also enhanced the marketing of Drake athletics to generate additional exposure and corporate donations. Blank served as chairman of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Committee and was a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance Committee and Football Issues Committee. He received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation in 2005. Before moving to Drake in 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). Blank directed the CINO Club, increasing fiscal contributions to Coastal Carolina athletics by more than 200 percent. He spearheaded efforts to raise more than $4 million to establish an intercollegiate football program at the university, which began play in 2003. Before moving into athletics administration, Blank spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in Lock Haven history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from South Carolina in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration (finance). He earned a master of science degree in business administration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children – Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis.

Academic Support

The Elon University Athletic Department is proactive in ensuring the academic success of all student-athletes from their recruiting visit through graduation, including the integral components of academic support for athletics, academic enhancement program, communication with coaches, registration services, travel notices, recruiting visits, laptops and life skills. Academic Enhancement Program (AEP) All freshmen and select upperclassmen participate in the Academic Enhancement Program. All student-athletes in AEP meet with their assigned academic coordinator each week to discuss academic progress and concerns. In addition to weekly meetings, student-athletes in AEP are required to complete monitored study hours. To accommodate class and practice schedules, both daytime and nighttime options are available to complete monitored study hours. Registration Services All student-athletes are assigned an academic advisor through the academic advising office. The academic advisor serves as the primary contact for preregistration and graduation requirements and student-athletes meet with their academic advisor prior to the beginning of registration to determine scheduling needs. Studentathletes also meet with the academic coordinator for their sport to balance their academic schedule with athletic demands, such as in-season versus out-of-season scheduling.

Cayce Crenshaw Director for Academic Support for Athletics

Life Skills In addition to the academic support provided by Elon Athletics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the student-athlete experience. Programs and speakers address topics such as freshman transition issues, health and wellness, and career/graduate school preparation. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council is an organization for student-athletes, run by student-athletes, to provide an opportunity to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Burlington communities. Academic Success Of the more than 400 student-athletes, athletic training students, cheerleaders and dance team members at Elon last spring, 206 made the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll, which recognizes those students with a semester GPA of 3.0 or better. In addition, 99 athletes achieved either the President’s List or the Dean’s List honors last spring.

Between practices, training and games, the Elon softball team members always take time in their busy schedules to give back to the community that supports them throughout the season and their careers at Elon. Last year, members of the team volunteered their time to help middle-schoolers develop their softball skills, teach fifth-graders on Education Day with the Phoenix and other activities that focus primarily spending time with local youth.” “Extending our hands into the community gives us the opportunity to not only form relationships with people, but give something back, most of the time for the less fortunate. Hopefully it will encourage people of the community to come out and watch a few games and help develop a consistent fan base. When they come to watch, they will be able to associate a name with a face and a relationship with each player.” - Patti Weber ‘09 Outfielder “Community service as a team is a great way for us to strengthen our relationships as a group along with having the satisfaction that we helped to make someone’s life or day just a little bit better.” - Erin O’Shea, ‘12 Pitcher

“Doing community service provides an opportunity for my team to interact positively with the people we encounter on a daily basis. It is not just about lending a hand when one is needed, but about creating a relationship we hope to build on in the future.” - Brandi Jones ‘09 Outfielder

“I really enjoy community service. It’s a great way to step away from improving Elon Softball and work towards improving the Elon community. Among our community services are the camps we work; They’re a great way to reach out to young softball players and allow them to grow in our knowledge. It’s also fun to volunteer as a team and share those experiences of reaching out and helping others. It’s a great feeling to be able to volunteer in our community!” - Jackie Gonzalez, ‘11 Infielder “I believe community service is a great way for our team to reach out and make a difference. We have an opportunity to build character outside of softball and see what else we can offer the world. It is a time to take away from the stresses of winning and losing and take time to help others. We all are very blessed to play this sport and one way we like to help out is to hold camps and clinics to kids of all ages to help them reach where we are today.” - Caitlin McGowan ‘11 Infielder

Strength&conditioning Elon softball places an emphasis on the physical development of its players. Under the direction of head strength and conditioning coach Aaron Walker, the squad benefits from innovative instruction and state-of-the-art facilities. Walker, in his fourth year at Elon, heads up the Phoenix’s strength and conditioning program. Previously, he served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of North Carolina. Walker graduated from East Carolina University in 2002 with a bachelor of science degree in communications. He was a three-year starter for the Pirate football squad, starting in 36 consecutive contests, including three bowl appearances. Assisting Walker is Megan McCollum who is in her fifth year with the Phoenix. McCollum came to Elon after serving an internship at Wake Forest University where she helped implement strength and conditioning programs. She obtained her master’s degree in sports physiology from Texas A&M University in August 2004. McCollum earned her bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University in 2002.

Aaron Walker Head Strength and Conditioning Coach

The Phoenix uses various strength and conditioning techniques to prepare for the highest level of competition. During the preseason, the team improves its bodies through a combination of weight training, track workouts, pilates and agilities. In the Phoenix Iron Works Program, four basic principles are maintained: 1. Accountability: Every athlete is responsible for being on time and doing the workout prescribed for that day. In a team setting, athletes will always be held accountable for the actions of their teammates. 2. Discipline: Simply stated, do the little things right at all times until it becomes habit. Once it becomes a habit, it carries over into every aspect of life, not just athletics. 3. Tempo: Everything done is upbeat and time efficient. From the time an athlete walks in the door, it is time to go to work. There is little or no idle time in the weight room. 4. Positive Spirit: Negativity affects productivity. Bad attitudes will not be tolerated. Everyone is here for the same purpose, so have fun.

A Q&A with Head Coach Patti Raduenz

Outlook

Elon Phoenix: What are your goals for this season? PR: I’m excited to coach a young, energetic team with the experienced leadership I’ve seen in our senior class. They are extremely competitive and hungry for the challenges ahead. They have proven to themselves in our fall preseason that they are ready to play. They have set high expectations for our team and are prepared to execute what lies ahead of them. EP: What are you looking to get from your returning players? PR: The four seniors are well equipped and fundamentally sound to be a threat in the Southern Conference. There is no substitute for hard work. My four seniors have been through my system, understand my expectations and share my passion for the game. I’m looking to their experience to lead the team in the behaviors necessary to be successful. EP: You have 10 underclassmen on the team this year, what are your expectations for them? PR: They are expected to grow in the sport every day. Individual skill development will play a key factor in the overall team performance. Passion, perseverance and confidence are the attitudes I expect the players to display on a daily basis. EP: The 2009 non-conference slate is challenging. How does a tough non-conference schedule prepare your team, physically and mentally, for league play? PR: If a team expects to win on a regular basis, they have to be challenged, mentally and physically. Our out-of-conference schedule was designed to challenge this team to be on the top of our game every day. To be the best you have to play the best. EP: Last season, your team won more Southern Conference games than any team in Elon history. What do you have to do to improve and build on that? PR: It is not easy to push yourself to be better every day. When I wake up, I ask myself “What can I do to be better today.” That is a life lesson that all of us can take with us. It is a lesson that as a team we ask ourselves “What can we do to be better this year, what can we do to be better than yesterday.” EP: With no juniors, how much will you rely on the sophomore class to become more vocal leaders? PR: The majority of our sophomore class has a full year of playing experience. They have been through the tough games, seen the level of competition and now are working to improve their own personal level. The sophomores are our future leaders and they are learning every day what responsibilities encompass that. EP: What will your newcomers provide for this team? PR: Athleticism, heart, hustle and passion. The newcomers are very coachable and have a willingness to learn every day. They all have a pure love for the game that is contagious. They know how to win. EP: You are playing 25 games at home this season. How important is a home field advantage to you and your team? PR: Playing in front of our fans and the community provides a huge boost to the mentality of our student-athletes. Any opportunity we have to share and offer pride for the Elon community is an immense impact in motivating the players. EP: You have three left-handed hitters on the team this season. How does that help the team in terms of offensive production and matchups? Scoring runs in bunches is all about finding ways to challenge the opposing defense. Having a diverse group of hitters will help us to push that philosophy. Whether lefty or righty, you have to put the ball in play. Our lefties this year provide two players with speed and one player with plenty of power. We are fortunate to have the same talent from the right side as well. EP: What has the addition of Assistant Coach Natalie Layden brought to your team? PR: To build a great team, I need great leadership. Adding Coach Layden has been a huge boost in the growth of this program. Her development as a coach and a teacher in this sport makes her one of the best in this conference. The players have responded well and I have seen growth in their level of conditioning and mental toughness. EP: Where does your motivation to coach come from? PR: I have always loved being challenged. If someone tells me “you can’t do that” or “you’ll never be that,” I love to show them otherwise. That drive to overcome the doubters and the nonbelievers comes from two people: My mom and a good friend of mine by the name of Jerry Bell. They both have taught me so many valuable lessons on how to live life right!

Natalie Layden Assistant Coach First Season Elon, ‘05

A three-year letterwinner for Elon and catcher from 2000-2004, Natalie Layden enters her first season as an assistant coach for the Phoenix. Layden will serve Elon as the hitting coordinator while also working with the team’s outfielders. In addition to her on-field duties, she will also play the role of liaison between the team and its academic coordinator and strength and conditioning staff.

Layden joins the Phoenix staff after spending the last two seasons at Muskingum College, where she helped the Muskies to a final NFCA Division III ranking of fifth in the country last year after fashioning a sizzling 41-12 record. Layden also guided the Muskies to two regular season championships, one conference tournament championship, two regional appearances and a World Series appearance. She served the Muskies as their first base coach while focusing primarily on the team’s hitting. Layden also worked as the head coach for Muskingum’s junior varsity team. As the JV squad’s coach, Layden was responsible for scheduling, coordinating transportation and coaching third base. Prior to coming to Muskingum, Layden served as the equipment manager and assistant to the coaching staff for the National Pro Fastpitch League’s Akron Racers, who advanced to the World Series. Among her responsibilities with the Racers, she managed field maintenance, charted pitches and organized equipment for all team-related activities. Layden began her coaching career by spending a season at Queens University of Charlotte, where she was responsible for the development of the squad’s pitchers and catchers. Under her leadership, the team finished as the league’s regular season and tournament champions. Along with her pitching duties, Layden also assisted with the development of infielders and hitting. After suffering an injury entering her senior season, Layden represented Elon as a student assistant for the 2005 campaign. In this capacity, she assisted in the development of the team’s catchers, charted offensive production and served as the tournament director of the annual Elon Invitational. Layden received a master of arts degree in education from Muskingum in 2008. Prior to that, she earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education from Elon in 2005.

2008 Recap

The 2008 Phoenix finished the season with a record of 26-27, including a 12-9 mark in league action, the most Southern Conference wins in school history. The fourth-seeded Phoenix fell to UNC Greensboro 1-0 in the opening round of the Southern Conference tournament before bouncing back with a 5-3 win over Western Carolina. Elon ended its tournament run with a 8-0 loss to the College of Charleston, which went on the face Chattanooga in the championship game. The team saw two Elon career records fall during the season as Tracey Dahlen became the all-time leader in assists with 544 and Debbie Zeigler is now first in runs batted in with 122. The two left their mark in the Elon record books, ranking among the top-10 in many offensive categories. Dahlen ranks seventh in hits, sixth in RBI, third in at bats, fifth in runs and sixth in stolen bases. She is also tied for eighth in doubles and sixth in home runs. Zeigler finished her career ranked fourth in hits and doubles, third in fielding percentage and fifth in at bats. She is tied for ninth in homeruns. For her efforts, Dahlen was named the team’s MVP and earned first-team all-conference and all-state honors. Joining her on the all-conference team were Melanie Helterbran and Jackie Gonzalez who were named to the second team. The Phoenix opened the 2008 season with an impressive sweep of Savannah State. The team did not allow the Tigers to score a run for a combined score of 45-0 over the three-game series. Elon posted non-conference wins over Binghamton, Seton Hall, Georgetown and Ohio in home tournaments. The team then traveled to the Stetson Invitational where it completed a two-game sweep of Big-10 member Michigan State before entered conference play. The Phoenix opened SoCon play with a three-game sweep of Western Carolina. The team fashioned a 6-1 win in the first game. The teams battled hard for the next two games, including a 13-6 slugfest in which Elon prevailed. Following the sweep, Elon went to Chapel Hill to face the 19th-ranked Tar Heels for the second game of a two-game series. The team held UNC scoreless for six-and-a-half innings, before the Tar Heels erupted with an eight-run seventh inning to get the win. During the second meeting, Elon held North Carolina to just one run, but could not add any offense and fell 1-0. Elon dropped the series with Furman, Georgia Southern and Chattanooga two games to one before splitting a two-game series with North Carolina A&T that included a 10-0 shutout of the Lady Aggies. The victory over N.C. A&T sparked a four-game win streak for the Phoenix. Elon garnered its second conference sweep of the season with a three-game sweep of Appalachian State. The team stepped out of conference play with a twin bill against Radford, falling in both games. Elon then faced nearby UNC Greensboro, dropping the first game but avoiding the sweep with a 4-2 win to snap a four-game skid. Elon split with Charlotte before the College of Charleston visited Elon for the final series of the regular season. CofC took game one 4-3, but Elon answered by winning the final two contests by scores of 2-1 and 8-4.

SoCon

The Southern Conference, which began its 88th season of intercollegiate competition in 2008, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models.

Southern Conference Staff John Iamarino - Commissioner Geoff Cabe - Senior Associate Commissioner Sue Arakas - Associate Commissioner Doug King - Associate Commissioner Mandi Copeland - Director of Multimedia Services Brandon Neff - Director of Championships Mike Mitchell - Director of Marketing Jason Yaman - Director of Media Relations Jonathan Caskey - Associate Director of Media Relations Laura Hayes - Assistant to the Commissioner Ben Austin - Championship/Operations Assistant Russell Dorn - Media Relations Assistant (SB Contact)

The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984) and becoming the first conference to install the three-point field goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. Commissioner Germann spearheaded the Southern Conference’s expansion to include women’s athletics during the 1983-84 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994. The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women’s athletics have become an integral part of the Southern Conference and its success
