The Southern Conference, which began its 88th season of intercollegiate competition in 2008, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the studentathlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models.

Southern Conference

The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984) and becoming the first conference to install the three-point field goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer.

The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. Commissioner Germann spearheaded the Southern Conference’s expansion to include women’s athletics during the 198384 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994. The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women’s athletics have become an integral part of the Southern Conference and its success

DR. LEO M. LAMBERT ELON UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT Leo M. Lambert became Elon’s eighth president in January 1999. Very early in his tenure, his responsibilities included completing the Elon Vision strategic plan, including the construction of Rhodes Stadium and the opening of Belk Library. Today, Lambert’s work focuses on an ambitious new strategic vision which aims to place Elon, with a national reputation for engaged learning, among the nation’s best small, selective, private universities. Substantial progress has been achieved toward realizing this goal. The academic climate of the campus has been strengthened by endowed programs such as the Kenan Honors Fellowships, the Baird Pulitzer Prize Lectures and the Isabella Cannon Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Leadership. He has led efforts to more than double expenditures for library acquisitions, increase faculty sabbatical opportunities and improve Elon’s position in Division I athletics by joining the Southern Conference. Lambert has been committed to further strengthening Elon’s renowned programs of experiential learning, and the results have included top national rankings for Elon’s study abroad, volunteer service, undergraduate research and leadership programs. Lambert has provided national leadership in efforts such as Campus Compact and Project Pericles, which encourage students to become civically engaged in their communities. During his tenure, the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business has attained AACSB International accreditation, the School of Communications has achieved accreditation by ACEJMC and the Elon University School of Law, which opened in Greensboro in 2006, achieved American Bar Association provisional approval in 2008.

Administration

Recent new campus facilities have included the Ernest A. Koury Sr. Business Center, the Academic Village, The Colonnades dining hall and residence halls, The Oaks residence complex and Belk Track and White Field.

Lambert has written extensively about post-secondary education and is co-editor of a book about university teaching that was published by the Syracuse University Press in 2005. His alma mater, the State University of New York, awarded him an honorary doctorate of human letters in 2002 in recognition of exceptional achievements in higher education. Lambert’s greatest honor in life, in collaboration with his wife Laurie, has been the privilege of parenting two daughters, Callie, a student at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Mollie, a student at Furman University.

DR. GERALD FRANCIS ELON UNIVERSITY PROVOST

Dr. Gerald (Gerry) Francis is provost and vice president for academic affairs at Elon University. As provost, he is second in command, responsible for the academic program, admissions and student life. Francis received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Appalachian State University, where he was a member of the basketball team. He earned a doctorate in mathematics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech). Francis came to Elon in 1974 as a professor in the department of mathematics. During his tenure, he received the Daniels-Danieley Award as Elon’s most outstanding teacher. In 1983, he joined the administrative ranks as dean of academic affairs, and was later named vice president before assuming his current position in 1994. During his years at Elon, the institution has doubled in size, increased quality among faculty and students and made substantial facilities improvements. Francis is a native of Arlington, Va., and is married to Burlington native Laine Neese Francis. His daughter Kristen and her husband James McCarthy are both Elon alums and have one child, Jay, and reside in Elon.

DAVE BLANK ELON UNIVERSITY DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Dave Blank begins his third year as the Elon University Director of Athletics for the 2008-09 campaign, following another year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in terms of athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. During his first two years at Elon, he has ignited ambitious expansions in the Department of Athletics – including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club with emphasis on funding scholarships for student-athletes, a restructuring of the academic assistance program for athletics in conjunction with the Office of the Provost and a plan for future facility improvements, including an already completed renovation and expansion of the Latham Park baseball facility. In June 2008, Blank was appointed to serve on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet – a 31-member cabinet consisting of athletics directors, senior woman administrators and faculty athletic representatives representing the nation’s multi-sport Division I conferences which will help shape the future of Division I athletics. Under Blank’s direction, 12 of Elon’s 16 teams fashioned higher Southern Conference finishes during the 2007-08 season than they did during the 2006-07 campaign. What makes that fact even more impressive is that 10 Phoenix squads achieved a higher SoCon finish during the 2006-07 season than they did during the previous campaign.

Administration

In 2007-08, the Phoenix baseball team went on to claim SoCon outright regular season and tournament crowns en route to making the program’s third NCAA regional appearance in seven seasons. Also, Elon fell one mere victory shy of capturing the SoCon’s automatic NCAA postseason bid in football, men’s basketball and men’s tennis. During the 2006-07 season, Elon notched its first winning record in men’s soccer at the Division I level and posted SoCon outright regular season and tournament titles and an NCAA postseason appearance in men’s tennis. The Phoenix men’s soccer (2006), football (2007), men’s tennis (2007 and 2008) and baseball (2008) teams have all earned national rankings during Blank’s time at Elon. Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006 after spending six years as the Director of Athletics at Drake University. At Drake, he directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was responsible for the creation of a comprehensive academic assistance program. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade-point average of 3.0 or above. Also, Blank oversaw the addition of the women’s crew, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs at Drake. Facility enhancements were a priority during his tenure at Drake, including upgrades in the softball complex, renovation of the strength and conditioning facilities and new locker rooms for several sports. Under Blank’s guidance, Drake completed a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium, which hosts football, soccer and track and field events as well as the nationally known Drake Relays. He restructured the Bulldog Club, which provides financial support for Drake athletics, resulting in a 90-percent increase in gifts. He also enhanced the marketing of Drake athletics to generate additional exposure and corporate donations. Blank served as chairman of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Committee and was a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance Committee and Football Issues Committee. He received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation in 2005. Before moving to Drake in 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). Blank directed the CINO Club, increasing fiscal contributions to Coastal Carolina athletics by more than 200 percent. He spearheaded efforts to raise more than $4 million to establish an intercollegiate football program at the university, which began play in 2003. Before moving into athletics administration, Blank spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in Lock Haven history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from South Carolina in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration (finance). He earned a master of science degree in business administration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children – Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis.

The Elon University volleyball team returns five starters and nine letterwinners from a 2007 team that went 17-16, including an 11-7 record in Southern Conference play. The 11-7 record marked the best finish for the Phoenix since joining the Southern Conference during the 2003 season. The previous best was set in 2004 when the team went 10-6. “We have a good mix of talent and experience at every position,” head coach Mary Tendler said of the 2008 squad. “More importantly, we have an intense team that is going to work hard to reach their potential every day in practice and in each competition.” Elon returns leadership at all positions and welcomes three new faces to the lineup. Seniors Kelley Blakewood and Shelley MacBean will split time with sophomore Lizzie West as the team’s defensive specialist. Blakewood appeared in all 33 matches as the libero in 2007 and led the team in digs with 538. She also carried a team leading 51 service aces. MacBean enters the 2008 season after playing in 32 matches last season when she recorded 188 digs. West, who recorded 120 digs in 31 match appearances in her first season as a Phoenix will push for additional time this fall.

2008 Outlook

Blakewood will also see some time at the outside hitter position, along with fellow senior Jessica Barrow, junior Mandy Wilson and sophomore Lauren Copenhagen. Barrow returns for the 2008 season after starting 20 matches in 2007. She recorded 275 kills and registered 44 total blocks. Wilson made 19 starts, but saw action in 32 matches last season. She recorded 197 kills and added 42 total blocks for the Phoenix. Copenhagen will make the transition from the right side to the left this season. As a right side hitter, Copenhagen appeared in all 33 matches with 32 starts. She tallied 271 kills, averaging 2.26 kills per game. She also tallied 83 blocks and was third on the team with 270 digs.

Sarah Schermerhorn and Stefanie Meyers are set to return in the middle. Schermerhorn is back after posting an impressive .249 hitting percentage. Contributing to her team leading hitting percentage was her 234 kills. She showed a defensive prowess with the team’s second best block total of 101, including eight solo blocks. An injury limited Meyers to just four appearances last season, but she will return to the lineup and provide depth and leadership in the middle. The Phoenix will benefit from newcomer Caroline Lemke, who has experience playing all three front row positions, but will spend the majority of her time in the middle. Junior Emily Regan is the returner at setter. In 2007, Regan made 29 appearances including seven starts as the team’s setter. She tallied 336 assists and eight service aces. Incoming freshman Megan McMahon will create competition at setter. After leading their high school teams to state championships as seniors, the two are ready to guide the Phoenix to a succesful campaign. Elon opens its season August 29 at North Carolina Central’s Hilton RTP/NCCU Tournament in Durham, N.C. where the team will face UNC Asheville, Maine and Florida Gulf Coast. The Phoenix will return to Alumni Gym September 5-6 for the home opener to host the third annual Phoenix Classic, welcoming UNC Wilmington, Campbell, and North Carolina A&T. Elon will face Winston-Salem State between tournaments at Robert Morris and William and Mary. The Phoenix will hit the road September 27-28, opening conference play at Appalachian State followed by a league match at Western Carolina. Elon will play nine home matches, including a five-contest homestand that begins October 4 against Furman. Highlighting the road matches for the Phoenix is a trip to Birmingham, Ala. to face Samford the newest member of the Southern Conference. Elon will conclude its regular season September 15 when it hosts Chattanooga. The team will travel to UNC Greensboro for the 2008 Southern Conference Tournament November 21-23. “This team is very focused on making sure 2008 is a special year,” added Tendler. “The competition within the conference will be very strong, but we look forward to stepping up to the challenge and reaching our goals.”

A former three-time first-team All-American and professional volleyball player, Mary Tendler enters her sixth season at the helm of the Phoenix. In her second year, Tendler directed Elon to its first winning season in seven campaigns with an 18-14 record, including a 10-6 Southern Conference ledger for a second-place finish in the league’s North Division. In Tendler’s first season, she guided the Phoenix to a 14-19 mark, five more wins than the previous year. She also led the team through its first year in the SoCon, posting a 7-11 slate in the league that year. The three seasons before joining the Elon staff, Tendler served as an assistant coach at James Madison University, helping to lead the Dukes to a Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament appearance. Tendler, who played at the University of Illinois as Mary Eggers from 1985-88, went to James Madison from Drake University where she was an assistant during the 1999 season on the staff of her husband, Blaine Tendler. She was an assistant the five years prior at Illinois State. During this span, the Redbirds claimed a share of a Missouri Valley Conference regular season title and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament and NIVC Tournament. Before her coaching career, Tendler spent a yearand-a-half playing with the USA Olympic team and then spent two years playing professionally in Europe. She played for the Schwerte Volleyball Club in Germany in 1991 and the Francheville Volleyball Club in France in 1992.

Tendler led the nation in hitting percentage in 1986 and 1988, setting an NCAA record with her .455 mark in 1986. Her .420 career hitting percentage stood as the NCAA record until 1993 and currently ranks third all time. Tendler finished her career with 1,761 kills and only 326 errors on 3,417 attempts. She still ranks fourth in the NCAA in season hitting percentage and fifth for consecutive matches played with 151. Tendler holds Fighting Illini career records in attack percentage, aces, blocks and kills. She was named the school’s Female Athlete of the Decade for the 1980s. EP: You followed up your Big Ten Freshman of the Year recognition with three Big Ten Player of the Year honors, three First Team All-American accolades and the Honda National Player of the Year award following your senior season. What did those awards mean to you? Were those goals you set for yourself? MT: No. I mean, once our team got into the top-20, I wanted to play on a team that won the National Championship – that was the ultimate goal. We came short of that; we got two third-place finishes, losing to Hawaii both years. So it was a little disappointing. The teams that do well, they look for a player on those teams to give the All-American awards to and the MVP. So without being on a successful team and having good coaches I would never have gotten those awards. It was kind of neat that I played on such a close knit team that I would win an award and sometime I think my teammates were more excited than I was. It was cool to be in that sort of atmosphere. EP: How did you decide you wanted to go into coaching? MT: Early on, I never knew I wanted to be a coach. I was a business administration major. But I had such good experiences – in college, with the national team – and such good coaches that I wanted to try to give back and hopefully give my players some of those same experiences. EP: What do you think are some of the most important things that you try to teach your players and help them to understand? MT: I think, the important thing is that you enjoy what you are doing on the volleyball court. And to realize that volleyball is a game. And that you can have fun and work hard at the same time. And if you are doing that, you are going to win matches. I think the players here realize that and they do work hard and I think it is going to translate into a lot of success at Elon. 7

Coaching Staff

Q&A With Head Coach Mary Tendler EP: In 1986 and 1988, you led the country in hitting percentage and one of those seasons still stands as a top-five percentage in the NCAA. Your career hitting percentage of .420, which stood as an NCAA record for five seasons, currently ranks third. Just talk about that and the importance of hitting percentage and what it means as a player and in the sport. MT: First of all, I didn’t know it was top-three all time! I played as a middle blocker and it’s a little easier to get a higher percentage playing in the middle than it is for an outside hitter. The setter has a lot of choices when they go to set the ball and if you want to get more sets you become more efficient and the setter will go to you more often. I was really fortunate that I played on a team that had really good passing and for a middle to be able to hit you need to have really good passers. So the setter was able to get me the ball a lot and I was able to find some holes in the defense. I wasn’t necessarily a power hitter, I was a smart hitter and I had really good vision to see the court and where the openings were.

Strength and Conditioning/Academics

To achieve top condition for a high level of competition, Elon University student-athletes need a state-of-the-art weight room. A facility located in the Koury Center provides Phoenix teams with that weight room. Aaron Walker, in his fourth year at Elon, heads up Elon’s strength and conditioning program. Previously, he served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of North Carolina. The 2002 East Carolina University graduate started 36 contests — including three bowl games — for the Pirates’ football squad before earnAaron Walker ing defensive MVP honors for the Assindia Cardinals of the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach German Football League. Assisting Walker is Megan McCollum, who is in her fifth year with the Phoenix. McCollum came to Elon after serving an internship at Wake Forest where she helped implement strength and conditioning programs. She obtained her master’s degree in sports physiology from Texas A&M University in 2004. McCollum earned her bachelor’s degree from N.C. State University in 2002. The goal of the Megan McCollum training program is to enhance a student-athlete’s Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach performance by improving their strength, power, agility and conditioning. Elon University Athletics is proactive in ensuring the graduation of its student-athletes. One way Elon promotes the committment to acadmics is through the academic enhancement program. The AEP provides an opportunity for students to excel with the help of tutors and an academic progress counselor. Elon provides each student-athlete with the necessary help and support needed to be academically successful at Elon University. All freshman student-athletes and select upperclassmen participate in the AEP. The academic progress and class attendance of student-athletes in the AEP are monitored, progress reports are mailed to professors once each semester and mid-term and final grades are checked. Workshops aimed at enhancing a student-athlete’s personal, academic and career development are also offered. In addition to the academic support provided by Elon Athletics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the student-athlete experience. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council is an organization for student-athletes, run by studentathletes, to provide an opportunity for student-athletes to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Burlington communities. Of the more than 400 student-athletes, athletic trainers, cheerleaders and dance team members at Elon last spring, 206 made the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll, which recognizes those students with a semester GPA of 3.0 or better. In addition, 99 ath-

Between classes, practice’s, training and matches, the Elon volleyball team members always take time in their busy schedules to give back to the community that supports them throughout the season and their careers at Elon. Last year, member’s of the team volunteered at local Habitat for Humanity sites, spoke at a middle school career day and spent their Halloween with kids at a local YMCA. The volunteering program ensures the development of the student-athlete on and off the court. “Doing community service this year was truly a fantastic opportunity to reach out to the community and grow closer together as a team. From helping serve Habitat for Humanity, to carnivals at the YMCA, to teaching volleyball clinics we all had a blast. It is exciting to have the opportunity to meet others needs.” - Mandy Wilson, ‘10 Outside Hitter

“Service projects are a great opportunity for our team to bond, while giving back to the local community.” - Kelley Blakewood, ‘09 Outside Hitter/Defensive Specialist

Elon in the Community

“I think that any way you can help someone out is so important to do in life, and it can definitely be life changing. Last spring break, I went with some friends that I met at Elon’s Catholic Church to Florida for Habitat for Humanity. It’s a humbling experience for me to see the gratitude on others’ faces from the little I do for them. We just have so many blessings in life and these people are so thankful for the things we may take for granted everyday.” - Emily Regan, ‘10 Setter
