The Southern Conference, which began its 89th season of intercollegiate competition in 2009, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships.

Phoenix Community Events The Elon softball team in committed to making a difference in its community as well as on the diamond. Last year, members of the team volunteered their time to help up-and-coming softball players develop their softball skills, teach fifth-graders on Education Day with the Phoenix, and help local youth and community members in a variety of ways. Through all of their work, they hope to leave a positive mark in the Elon community. Camps The Elon softball team hosts camps with local and national players of all levels from ages 7-17. The players coach the campers on hitting, pitching and catching. Education Day The softball team has assisted with “Education Day with the Phoenix” a program that welcomes students from local elementary schools to the Elon campus for educational activities and a women’s basketball game after lunch. The team helps teach the visiting students lessons in math, science and geography.

Habitat for Humanity Re-Store The Phoenix used one of its Friday afternoons to volunteer at the Re-Store, an area furniture store associated with Habitat for Humanity that refurbishes and sells used furniture. Part of the profits go towards Elon’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity. While there, the team assisted with cleaning, selling and taking inventory of the items that have been donated. Elon Fall Festival Several players, along with Coach Bocock, volunteered at the Elon Elementary School Fall Festival. The student-athletes worked with different events to ensure that the festival ran smoothly. Tomeka Watson and Coach Bocock manned the pony rides, a festival favorite. Kari Pervell helped sell tickets at the front gates, while Carly MacDougall worked the bounce house. Color Me Phoenix ‘Color Me Phoenix’ is the activity that took place at the Elon vs. The Citadel football game. Among other activities, children were invited to color a picture of the Phoenix mascot and enter their art into a contest. The Elon softball team helped set up and manage the event.

Legend of the Phoenix Throughout history there is told the legend of the rare and remarkable Phoenix, a crimson and gold bird that lived 500 years. It was sleek, swift and strong - the most marvelous bird ever created by human imagination. At the end of its life, with death approaching, it built a nest in an oak tree and was consumed in flames ignited by the sun. From the ashes emerged the next Phoenix - reborn and renewed, with strength forged in fire. Fire, too, has shaped the history of Elon University. The disastrous fire of 1923 all but destroyed Elon. Gone were Main Building, college records, classrooms, the library and the chapel. But within days of the fire, Elon trustees set

in motion the plan for Elon to rise from the ashes, stronger than ever. The Phoenix is a powerful leader and an emblem of immortality. It is a perfect symbol for a school that is constantly renewing and recreating itself. The Elon motto, Numen Lumen, embraces intellectual and spiritual light. And so too, throughout history, the Phoenix has served as a symbol of light and knowledge. The Phoenix is timeless and unique. It perfectly describes an athletics program and an institution that are rising to new levels of excellence. There is only one Phoenix. There is only one Elon. Catch the Fire!

Academic Excellence • Elon University is a dynamic private comprehensive university known for excellent arts and sciences along with outstanding professional programs. Academic Support • The Elon University Athletic Department is proactive in ensuring the academic success of all student-athletes from their recruiting visit through graduation. Integral components of academic support for athletics include the academic enhancement program, registration services, tutorial services, travel notices, recruiting visits, laptops and life skills. • All freshmen and select upperclassmen participate in the Academic Enhancement Program. All student-athletes in AEP meet with their assigned academic coordinator each week to discuss academic progress and concerns. In addition to weekly meetings, student-athletes in AEP are required to complete monitored study hours. To accommodate class and practice schedules, both daytime and nighttime options are available to complete monitored study hours. • In addition to the academic support provided by Elon Athletics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the student-athlete experience. Programs and speakers address topics such as freshman transition issues, health and wellness, and career/graduate school preparation. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council is an organization for student-athletes, run by student-athletes, to provide an opportunity to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Burlington communities.

What do you expect from your team in 2010? This game is not bound by time, only by the limits we place on ourselves. I’m looking forward to seeing a team that does not know how to quit and a team that keeps its foot on the gas pedal and continues to believe in the power of positive thinking.

This team is definitely all fired up, which happens to be our team motto. As we look into this season, we’ll continue to focus on the part of the game that we can control our attitude. Plans are in the works for a new softball facility. How beneficial would that be to the program? Recruiting is one of the most important aspect, to winning championships. Elon is a fantastic learning community with awesome opportunities for its students. Of course, as the university finalizes the plans for the new facility and the dream is built, it would be a welcome benefit to assist in recruiting and continually improve the student-athlete experience.

You have two new coaches this year. How have they transitioned? I’m a big believer that you surround yourself with positive people and positive events are inevitable. Coach [Kathy] Bocock embodies what it means to be a great teammate. She is extremely knowledgeable and her experience in college athletics is invaluable. When Coach Bocock was a volunteer on my staff two years ago, I knew that if we ever had an opening she would be the complete replacement. Coach [Jessica] Kohut brings organization, passion and enthusiasm. She has really impressed me with her thorough pitching workouts and her dedication to recruiting. Together, they are an excellent staff that complement each other well and bring me the support and dedication all head coaches need.

How important is it for your underclassmen to step up this season, especially with no seniors on the team? There is no doubt we are a young team. Out of that youth comes a lot of energy and eagerness to be the best we can be. You have a junior college transfer on the team in Emerald Graham. What do you think the value is to having someone with post-high school playing experience? Emerald is just what her name pictures, a gem. Her experience in collegiate and postseason play brings us the leadership and consistency an experienced player possesses. With two tournaments at home this year, how important is a home field advantage to your team? Playing at home on familiar ground and in front of your fan base is definitely an advantage. The old saying of ‘nobody comes into our house and expects an easy win’ will ring true this season. The home games also allow our fans the opportunity to help supply us with that much needed

Patti Raduenz Head Coach 10th Season Michigan State • ‘97 A former all-star shortstop and third baseman in the Women’s Professional Softball League, Patti Raduenz now enters her 10th season as the head coach of the Elon Phoenix. Raduenz helped the 2009 Phoenix to a 15-32 overall record and a 6-15 slate in the Southern Conference. The team had signature wins over Michigan State and a series win over league rival Furman. Under her guidance, the 2008 Elon squad posted a 26-27 record that included a 12-9 mark in league play, the most league wins since joining the SoCon. The 12-9 mark earned Elon a spot in the SoCon Tournament where it posted a 5-3 win over Western Carolina before falling to the College of Charleston. Raduenz coached shortstop Tracy Dahlen to first-team all conference accolades, while designated player Melanie Helterbran and second baseman Jackie Gonzalez earned second-team honors. Dahlen was also named to the North Carolina Sports Information Association All-State team. In 2007, Raduenz’s squad fashioned a 28-32 overall record and a 9-11 mark in league play. Elon earned the No. 6 seed in the SoCon Tournament and a first-round win over Appalachian State before dropping games to eventual tournament champion Furman and Georgia Southern. Raduenz saw both of Elon’s middle infielders – Dahlen and second baseman Paige Goss – earn first-team all-conference accolades. Goss also garnered all-state honors and ESPN The Magazine First-Team Academic All-District III and third-team Academic All-America recognition. In 2006, Raduenz’s team posted a 24-29 record with an 11-13 SoCon ledger. Elon earned league tournament wins over Georgia Southern and Furman before falling to Appalachian State. Raduenz guided Goss to all-conference honors and catcher Jaimie Rao to all-state accolades. In 2005, Raduenz led the Phoenix to a 31-32 record, including a 9-12 mark in SoCon action. The Phoenix took conference tournament wins over East Tennessee State and Georgia Southern before being eliminated by Furman. Elon also landed three players on the all-conference teams while outfielder Dani Concepcion was named to the league’s all-tournament team. Raduenz’ 2004 squad collected the program’s most wins since Elon moved to the NCAA Division I level, finishing the season 33-23-1 overall and 11-10 in SoCon play. The Phoenix captured its first SoCon Tournament win with victories over UNC Greensboro and Georgia Southern. Elon placed a league-high five players on the all-conference teams in its first year of competition in the SoCon. The 2004 team also finished third nationally with a .976 fielding percentage after notching 1,160 putouts, 521 assists and only 41 errors in 57 games. Raduenz spent the summer of 2004 playing for the USA Baseball Women’s National team. Her squad represented the United States in the 2004 International Baseball Federation (IBAF) Women’s World Cup in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and the World Series held in Japan, capturing the a gold medal at the World Cup. Raduenz notched a .273 batting average for the season. She tallied six runs, three doubles, two triples and eight RBI while posting a .485 slugging percentage. She amassed 90 putouts at first base and four assists. Raduenz was one of only two players to play every inning at the same position and in the same spot in the lineup. She played all 11 games at first base while batting cleanup. The 2003 Elon team finished 20-25-1, including a 4-4 record in the Big South Conference to place fourth in the league. In 2002, the Phoenix finished 16-39, including a 6-4 ledger in Big South 2010 Phoenix Softball

play to garner a second-place finish in the regular season. The improvement in the Elon program yielded Big South Coach of the Year honors for Raduenz. In her inaugural campaign at Elon, Raduenz guided the 2001 Phoenix to a 16-41 record, a six-game improvement in the win column over the 2000 squad. Elon also won its first-ever Big South Tournament game that year. Prior to her arrival at Elon, Raduenz was an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina. She served as the hitting and infield instructor for the Tar Heels during the 2000 season. Under her tutelage, North Carolina put up the fifth-best batting average in the nation. Raduenz also served as an assistant at California State University of Sacramento and Iowa State University in Ames. In her four seasons as a player at Michigan State University, Raduenz put together a .372 career batting average. During both her junior and senior seasons, her batting average topped the .400 mark. For her senior year, she was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor. Raduenz also earned All-American honors and was a twotime Academic All-American. After leaving Michigan State, Raduenz played for the Georgia Pride and the Durham Dragons in the WPSL. She was the first player traded in league history. In 1997, Raduenz finished second in batting average and doubles in the WPSL.

Jessica Kohut Assistant Coach First Season College of New Jersey - ‘07

Kathy Bocock begins her first season as an assistant coach for the Elon softball team.

Jessica Kohut enters her first season as an assistant coach with the Phoenix.

Bocock comes to Elon with 24 years of coaching and athletic administrative experience. Most recently, she was a private softball coach in Greensboro, N.C.,providing hitting and fielding instruction for athletes ranging from ages eight to 15. Bocock also spent one year as a volunteer softball assistant at Elon where she assisted with the academic progress of student-athletes, on-campus recruiting functions, practice and game preparations.

Kohut joins the Elon coaching staff after serving as the graduate assistant coach at the University of New Haven for the past year where she created and implemented daily workouts for the pitching staff, conducted team practices, organized fundraising efforts and helped in the recruiting efforts.

Prior to her stint as a volunteer assistant, Bocock was the Senior Women’s Administrator at Averett University. In this position, she governed female equality in the athletics department and advised the Student Athletic Committee. Bocock also spent 15 years as the head softball and women’s basketball coach at Averett. At the helm of the Averett softball program, she guided the 1995 team to a regular-season co-championship and was named the Dixie Conference Coach of the Year for her efforts. She also led the 2000 squad to a 31-13 record and a regional ranking of third. Bocock coached Averett to the 2004 USA South Softball Tournament Championship. As a student-athlete at Ferrum College, Bocock was named the Co-Female Athlete of the Year during the 1982-83 season and served as the captain of the basketball team in 1982 and 1983.

Before her time at New Haven, Kohut spent one season as the first assistant coach at Drew University where she wrote and supervised daily pitching workouts and worked with student-athletes to improve their game knowledge and physical skills. A 2007 graduate of The College of New Jersey with a dual degree in elementary education and psychology, Kohut was a four-year member and two-year captain of the Lions’ softball team. Kohut received the 2007 Honda Inspiration Award. This award is given annually to one outstanding female college athlete who has overcome adversity to excel in her sport. Kohut received her master’s degree in management of sport industries from New Haven in 2009.

Bocock is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. She earned her bachelor’s degree in recreation and leisure services from Ferrum in 1986.

Dr. Leo M. Lambert President Elon University Since becoming Elon University’s eighth president in January 1999, Leo M. Lambert has advanced an ambitious agenda to establish Elon as a top-ranked liberal arts university and a national model of engaged teaching and learning. Under President Lambert’s leadership, Elon has accomplished broad improvements in academic and student life programs while continuing to develop a campus that consistently ranks among the nation’s most beautiful. The academic climate of the campus has been strengthened through major investments in faculty development, library resources, honors and fellows programs for outstanding students, and Elon’s top-ranked programs in study

abroad, undergraduate research, volunteer service, and leadership education. In 2001 Elon College became Elon University, and the NewCentury@Elon strategic plan was developed under President Lambert’s leadership. He directed the establishment of Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences and both the School of Communications and the School of Education that same year. In 2006, Dr. Lambert led the drive to open the Elon University School of Law in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina. New facilities constructed during President Lambert’s tenure include Carol Grotnes Belk Library, Rhodes Stadium, Belk Track and White Field, the sixbuilding Academic Village, Ernest A. Koury Sr. Business Center, Ellington Health Center, The Oaks residence hall complex, Colonnades Dining Hall and the Colonnades residence halls, and several new residence halls and a commons building in Danieley Center. The university has expanded to include the 75acre South Campus. President Lambert has assumed a number of leadership roles regionally and nationally, serving on the national and North Carolina boards of Campus Compact and as a founding board member

and president’s council chair of Project Pericles, a national organization that encourages students to become civically engaged in their communities. As a result, Elon has twice been named one of the nation’s top universities for community service in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. President Lambert has provided leadership on athletics issues, serving as a member of the NCAA Presidential Task Force on the Future of Division I Athletics and chairing the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification. In 2008 Dr. Lambert was appointed to the Commission on Effective Leadership by the American Council on Education and also to the North Carolina Higher Education Civic Education Study Commission. In 2009, he was named a director of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), which comprises more than 1,150 public and private colleges and universities of every type and size. Lambert has a bachelor’s degree from State University of New York at Geneseo, a master’s in education from the University of Vermont in Burlington, and a doctorate in education from Syracuse University. Prior to coming to Elon, he was provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. President Lambert’s greatest honor in life, in collaboration with his wife Laurie, has been the privilege of parenting two daughters, Callie, a student at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Mollie, a student at Furman University.

Dr. Gerald (Gerry) Francis assumed the role of Executive Vice President of Elon University in 2009. Francis received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Appalachian State University, where he was a member of the basketball team. He earned a doctorate in mathematics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech). Francis came to Elon in 1974 as an assistant professor in the department of mathematics. During his tenure, he received the Daniels-Danieley Award as Elon’s most outstanding teacher. In 1983,

he joined the administrative ranks as dean of academic affairs, and was later named vice president before assuming the role of provost in 1994. During his years at Elon, the institution has doubled in size, increased quality among faculty and students and made substantial facilities improvements. Francis is a native of Arlington, Va., and is married to Burlington native Laine Neese Francis. His daughter Kristen and her husband James McCarthy are both Elon alums and have two children, Jay and Gerry, and reside in Elon.

Before moving into athletics administration, Blank spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in Lock Haven history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from the University of South Carolina in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Finance). He earned a Master of Science degree in Business Administration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children – Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis.
