www.elonphoenix.com Legend of the Phoenix

Throughout history there is told the legend of the rare and remarkable Phoenix, a crimson and gold bird that lived 500 years. It was sleek, swift and strong - the most marvelous bird ever created by human imagination. At the end of its life, with death approaching, it built a nest in an oak tree and was consumed in flames ignited by the sun. From the ashes emerged the next Phoenix - reborn and renewed, with strength forged in fire. Fire, too, has shaped the history of Elon University. The disastrous fire of 1923 all but destroyed Elon. Gone were Main Building, college records, classrooms, the library and the chapel. But within days of the fire, Elon trustees set in motion the plan for Elon to rise from the ashes, stronger than ever. The Phoenix is a powerful leader and an emblem of immortality. It is a perfect symbol for a school that is constantly

renewing and recreating itself. The Elon motto, Numen Lumen, embraces intellectual and spiritual light. And so too, throughout history, the Phoenix has served as a symbol of light and knowledge. The Phoenix is timeless and unique. It perfectly describes an athletics program and an institution that are rising to new levels of excellence. There is only one Phoenix. There is only one Elon. Catch the Fire!

“I have had an amazing experience at Elon both academically and athletically and am incredibly grateful for all the opportunities that I have had. One of the best things about Elon academically is that the professors know who you are and take active interest into your experience in their classroom and at Elon as a whole. It is also extremely helpful to have professors that understand the commitment associated with being a collegiate athlete and respect the time commitment it requires. On the other end, athletics has always emphasized the importance of being a STUDENT-athlete with student always coming first. This has taught me balance which I will inevitably use in my future. I cannot express how grateful I am for my teammates, coaches, classmates, professors and friends here at Elon.” Paige Kensrue, Senior Women’s Tennis Player

Elizabeth Anderson Head Coach UNC Wilmington ‘01 Overall: 58-57 Elizabeth Anderson will begin her sixth season at the helm of the Elon Phoenix women’s tennis program. During her five years with the program, the Phoenix has seen a steady and exciting rise in the Southern Conference standings. Elon finished eighth in the league in 2005, but has been among the top six programs in the league in each of the past three seasons. Anderson has coached two Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, including Elisa Simonetti who earned the honor in 2009. Under Anderson’s tutelage, Simonetti posted an impressive 8-2 league record at the number three position in her rookie season. The 2009 season also saw Anna Milian be recognized on the AllSoCon first team for the second consecutive year. Milian and doubles teammate Paige Kensrue were selected second-team

all-league. Elon also was victorious in the first round of the SoCon Tournament in back-to-back years, knocking off Western Carolina in 2009. The Phoenix posted 10 or more wins for the third straight season. The 2008 season was one of the best under Anderson as the Phoenix posted a 15-10 overall mark. Kensrue was named a Southern Conference Player of the Week and Milian was tabbed a Southern Conference Player of the Month. The 2008 campaign also saw the selection of two Phoenix players and a doubles tandem to first-team All-Southern Conference status. Anderson coached her first, and Elon’s first, conference freshman of the year in 2007. In addition to earning league rookie

of the year honors, Deanna Bailey also became the first Elon women’s tennis player to ever earn first-team All-Southern Conference accolades. The Phoenix posted its best-ever SoCon record at 6-3. Under Anderson in 2006, Elizabeth Kernodle was recognized as the ITA Southeast Region Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award and Southern Conference Sportsmanship Award recipient. In addition to all of the improvements on the court, the Phoenix has excelled academically, registering 19 Academic All-Southern Conference selections, and 19 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes during Anderson’s tenure. Under Anderson’s guidance and leadership, Elon has been named an ITA All-Academic Team for four consecutive years beginning in 2005-06. The team never earned that honor prior to Anderson’s arrival. Before coming to Elon, Anderson spent one season (2003-04) as the assistant coach at Auburn University. In 2002-03, she volunteered as an assistant women’s tennis coach for the top-10 program at the University of North Carolina. Anderson also served as the assistant women’s tennis coach at the University of Idaho in 2001-02 where she earned her master’s degree in physical education with an emphasis in sports psychology. Anderson served as a tennis pro at the Duke Faculty Club, Hollow Rock Racquet Club and Chapel Hill Tennis Club in 2002-03. She coached Tennis Europe’s National 1 team in the summer of 2002, traveling to tournaments in Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands and France. She also worked with the Van der Meer World Class tennis program in Hilton Head, S.C. in the summer of 2001 where she received her PTR professional certification. A 2001 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Anderson played on the Seahawk tennis team for four years (1997-2001). She was named to the Colonial Athletic Association Honor Roll each year and received the Most Improved Player award in 1998 and 2001 as well as the Coach’s Award in 2001. His infinite positive energy and passion are always felt and used by each team member. “Bob is a big part of our team and is one of the most kind and generous people that I know,” commented Anderson. “The team has a lot of respect and appreciation for him and his efforts to not only develop their tennis skills, but also their skills for life.” A long-time tennis coach at nearby Northeast Guilford High School, Owens worked closely with former Phoenix head coach Tom Parham for more than 20 years and now serves as an assistant to head coaches Anderson and Michael Leonard. Elon continues to reach new heights under the direction of Elizabeth Anderson. Before the 2010 season gets into full swing, Elon athletics sat down with Coach Anderson to discuss the program and the outlook for this year. You have a strong core returning from last year’s squad, including all three players who received conference honors last season. Talk about how that experience will help you heading into 2010. EA: We have one of the more experienced teams in the conference. We have outstanding leadership from our four seniors — Laura Graybill, Paige Kensrue, Anna Milian and Hayley Wahl. Each of these players has had a significant impact elevating our team over the past few years. Their positive attitudes and high energy levels are contagious. They have really helped the younger players to adjust quickly to college tennis and are very well-respected by their teammates. We are fortunate to have most of our players returning from last years’ team. Anna, Paige and Elisa (Simonetti) have made a huge impact in our conference and are among some of the top returning players. Our players have learned how important it is to pay attention to detail as many matches in our competitive conference are decided by a few points. We have a large amount of depth this year and the players are working hard to make our team better. What kind of routines do the players follow in the offseason so that they will be more prepared for the next season? EA: The team has been working very hard on conditioning and weights during this offseason. We gained a good amount of match play experience this fall from the tournaments and had some good wins. Our doubles pairs are really coming together and have been a big point of emphasis. This fall, we have been working with Dr. Wally Bixby on sports psychology — specifically on maximizing our mental toughness — and he has helped tremendously. Our improvements in all of these areas will help us to raise our level of play this spring. Elon players challenged some top opponents in the country during the fall tournaments. Talk a little bit about the importance of fall competition in tennis. EA: The fall tournaments are a great opportunity to improve and get in a lot of match play. We started off the fall with our tournament here at Elon and then went to the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational. Some of our players went to the Davidson Invitational and a few went to ITA Regionals at Wake Forest. Each of our players competed in about three tournaments and were able to get some strong wins that will give them confidence heading into the spring.

What are some of the goals you have for the team this year? EA: Our goal is to be the very best we can be and position ourselves in the regular season to win the Southern Conference tournament. We are working to maximize each individual’s potential, which will help us in reaching our overall team goals. You are now in your sixth season at Elon. What attracted you to this school and what makes it an attractive place for studentathletes? EA: Growing up in North Carolina, I have always had a lot of respect for Elon and enjoyed watching its amazing growth both academically and athletically. When I came to Elon, I was really looking to come to a school that had a strong sense of community and had a good balance of academics and athletics. I loved the opportunity it provided to build the team into a nationally recognized program that could routinely contend for conference titles in the competitive Southern Conference. Elon provides an outstanding opportunity for student-athletes to have an excellent education as well as play a very high level of tennis. What are some of the main characteristics you look for in a student-athlete when you are out recruiting? EA: I look for student-athletes who play at a high level and are striving to be the very best they can be both academically and athletically. It is also very important that they have strong values, character and morals and will fit well into the fabric of our university and team. I look for players who are excited about being pushed both in the academic and athletic arenas and will cherish their education, degree and experience from Elon. You currently have four players who hail from outside the U.S. borders. Do you do a lot of international recruiting? How easy is it for those players to adjust to life at Elon? EA: I look to find the best student-athletes I can find and have been very fortunate to have some great international student-athletes on our team. It is a wonderful experience for both the international and American students as they learn so much about their teammates’

cultures. We have a very close-knit team and that helps as they make the transition to coming to the United States for college. Last year Elon hosted the SoCon Championships. Talk a little bit about that event and the advantages of hosting it on your home courts. EA: Hosting the Southern Conference Championships at Elon last year was a very special experience for our team. We were very fortunate that each player had at least one parent come to the tournament — which is very impressive especially considering the distance many of these families had to travel. The university and Burlington communities were extremely supportive of the tournament. It was great to see how many people came to support our teams. For many of our fans, it was one of the first times they have come to see a college tennis match and many commented how much fun it was! This season, we hope to build on that excitement and community fan support. If you had to describe Elon tennis in one sentence, what would it be? EA: The Elon women’s tennis team is a phenomenally talented group of student-athletes striving to succeed academically and athletically and advance the program to new heights.

The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center In 1987, Dr. James Powell and his wife, Anne, presented Elon University with a major challenge gift for the construction of an on-campus, 12-court, lighted tennis facility. The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center consists of 12 hard courts separated into bays of three courts each. The court bays are captured by a 10-foot high, vinyl-coated fence fitted with nine-foot polypropylene wind screens. Evening tennis is made possible with low-level lighting. Each court is equipped with a state-of-the-art intercom system. Located at the center of the tennis complex is a two-story pavilion that houses a storage area, a concession stand and a viewing deck. From the viewing deck, competition can be observed in any direction, as well as the beautifully landscaped area between the courts. Shrubs and flowerbeds complement the permanent bleachers next to the two stadium courts, while honey locust trees help to shade the grassy seating area. In the summer of 2008, all 12 courts were resurfaced and in 2009, locker rooms were added for both the men’s and women’s teams. “Our team is thrilled by our new locker room,” commented women’s head coach Elizabeth Anderson. “It is a wonderful place for the girls to store their equipment and hang out as a team. We are very appreciative of this new addition!”

Dr. Leo M. Lambert Elon University President Since becoming Elon University’s eighth president in January 1999, Leo M. Lambert has advanced an ambitious agenda to establish Elon as a top-ranked liberal arts university and a national model of engaged teaching and learning. Under President Lambert’s leadership, Elon has accomplished broad improvements in academic and student life programs while continuing to develop a campus that consistently ranks among the nation’s most beautiful. The academic climate of the campus has been strengthened through major investments in faculty development, library resources, honors and fellows programs for outstanding students, and Elon’s topranked programs in study abroad, undergraduate research, volunteer service, and leadership education. In 2001 Elon College became Elon University, and the NewCentury@Elon strategic plan was developed under President Lambert’s leadership. He directed

Dave Blank Elon University Director of Athletics Dave Blank is in his fourth year as the Elon University Director of Athletics, following another year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in terms of athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. During his first three years at Elon, he ignited ambitious expansions in the Department of Athletics – including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club with emphasis on funding scholarships for student-athletes, a restructuring of the academic assistance program for athletics in conjunction with the Office of the Provost, and a plan for facility improvements, including an now completed renovation of the Latham Park baseball facility, permanent bleachers for soccer, a state-of-the-art golf practice facility, and an in-progress field house at the North Athletics Complex. In June 2008, Blank was appointed to serve on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet – a 31-member cabinet that will help shape the future of Division I athletics. Southern Conference titles in both men’s soccer and baseball with the baseball squad advancing to its third NCAA regional appearance in the past four seasons. The men’s tennis team fell just one win shy of a berth into NCAA play, but saw its first-ever individuals earn spots into the post-season tournament. In 2007-08, 12 of Elon’s 16 sports programs finished higher in the Southern Conference than the previous year. The Phoenix baseball team went on to claim SoCon outright regular-season and tournament crowns en route to a NCAA regional appearance. Also, Elon fell just one victory shy of capturing the SoCon’s automatic NCAA postseason bid in football, men’s basketball and men’s tennis. During the 2006-07 season, Elon posted SoCon outright regular-season and tournament titles and an NCAA postseason appearance in men’s tennis. The Phoenix men’s soccer (2006), football (2007 and 2008), men’s tennis (2007, 2008 and 2009) and baseball (2008 and 2009) teams have all earned national rankings during Blank’s time at Elon. Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006 after spending six years in the same position at Drake University where he directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade point average of 3.0 or above.

Also, Blank oversaw the addition of three women’s sports — crew, golf and soccer — as well as the completion of a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium. Blank has served as a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance and Football Issues Committees. In 2005, he received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation. Prior to 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). He also spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in school history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from the University of South Carolina in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Finance). He earned a Master of Science degree in Business Administration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children – Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis. 2010 Phoenix Women’s Tennis

The Southern Conference, which began its 89th season of intercollegiate competition in 2009, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. Elon women’s tennis began competing in the league in the 2004 season. Despite having only competed in the SoCon for six years, the Phoenix women’s tennis program is making its way towards the top of the standings in the competitive league. Elon players have earned league freshman of the year honors twice and eight all-conference plaques have been awarded to Elon singles and doubles competitors. Established in 1921, the Southern Conference is the fourth oldest major college conference in the United States. Its roots can be traced to 1894, when several football-playing institutions formed a confederation known as the Southeastern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA). On February 25-26, 1921, 15 of the larger SIAA members met in Atlanta and officially formed the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. Charter members were Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began that fall. Since its formation, the Southern Conference has given birth to the Southeastern

and Atlantic Coast conferences, and its membership has changed drastically. Current members include Furman, Appalachian State, The Citadel, College of Charleston, Davidson, Elon, Georgia Southern, Samford, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina, and Wofford. The Southern Conference gives three major awards to its member institutions. The Commissioner’s Cup is given annually to the school fielding the league’s best all-around men’s sports program, while the Germann Cup is presented to the school with the best overall women’s program. The McAlister Award is presented to the institution judged to have exhibited the highest degree of sportsmanship in league competition.
