The Rise of Bleisure Travel

As work-life boundaries become a distant memory from the past, Bleisure travel is the new norm. But what is Bleisure, you might be wondering? Let’s find out.

No , your eyes don ’ t fool you , and this certainly isn ’ t a typo Bleisure is a new hybrid model that combines business and leisure travel . In the , not so distant, past, both business and leisure travel have long been separate entities But the rise of Bleisure combines the best of both worlds to create a whole new experience for workers around the world

With the ongoing post - pandemic world transformation , more than ever, people around the world are attracted to the concept of work- life balance And this growing trend is stirring the hospitality industry as we know it

According to Expedia , 43% of business trips now include a leisure component These figures highlight the growth of business travel as a whole and the fact that

leisure is becoming a key part of modern business trips This is largely due to the advancement of technology and digital communication

Imagine being sent to attend a two - day conference in Miami , and then enjoying a one - week beachside stay before attending another business meeting

Technology is blurring the boundaries between work and play in unforeseen ways . From the digital nomad writing articles from a beach in Bali and the manager checking his emails on a ski lift to the

engineers coding from her annual trip to her parents ’ home , it ’s never been easier to stay connected , even when you ’re ‘a country away ’ from your manager.

For business travelers , the idea of Bleisure trips holds strong appeal for a number of key reasons . On a basic level , the combination of work and fun or personal activities helps to create a far better work / life balance

From the digital nomad writing articles from a beach in Bali and the manager checking his emails on a ski lift to the engineers coding from her annual trip to her parents’ home, it’s never been easier to stay connected

Here Are Our 7 Best Tips to Attract More Bleisure Travelers

Most bleisure travelers are millennials. These modern day workers look for specific things when booking their bleisure trips.

Let’s dive into six ways to appeal to this demographic

1. OFFER FASTAND RELIABLE INTERNET

Since Bleisure travelers will have business obligations to take care of, you want to ensure a stable, and fast, internet connection at all times A faulty internet service has the potential of bringing you problems, so ensure your internet service provider is reliable

2. HAVE A BUSINESS WORKPLACE

You can take the extra mile and offer business workspaces within your hotel, where these travelers can work uninterrupted and in a somewhat professional ambiance This can be especially welcome for the Bleisure traveler to take on calls without disturbing regular hotel guests who are trying to ‘escape’ from work.

Trendy places such as Soho House stays ahead of the curve by offering specific workplaces, such as Soho Work, equipped with phone booths, podcast equipment, private event space, among others.

3. PROMOTE SPECIAL BLEISURE DEALS

Entice your Bleisure travelers with irresistible deals. You can offer business travelers discounts to stay extra nights, or lower the price for them to join any local events as a means to encourage them to stay for a longer period of time. You can even offer specific Bleisure packages that corporate travelers can choose from when making their bookings

4. ENCOURAGE REPEAT STAYS

Business travelers often revisit the same city various times. Consider incentivizing these people to regularly stay at your hotel and extend their travel for some leisure time, too You can do that by creating a Bleisure loyalty rewards program in which points can be used to get discounts in recreational activities or hotel amenities

5. OFFER YOUR BLEISURE AMENITIES

Amenities such as a laptop, charging ports, office stationery, headphones etc, are essential to enable guests to conduct their business In addition, they would also like leisure amenities like a spa, sauna, swimming pool, gaming area etc.

6. SHOWCASE YOUR BLEISURE OFFERINGS

You might also highlight Bleisure possibilities on your corporate website, advertise Bleisure offers in pre-stay emails and include customer testimony from Bleisure travelers on social media platforms

Ready for more work-life balance?

Bleisure travel is here to stay and might even soon become the preferred mode of working for corporations Given the immense potential it holds for hotels, it is crucial for accommodation providers to prepare themselves for this market segment

The Virtuous Circle Campaign

An Interview With Marc Boullé, Our Marketing Director (a.i).

Why has EHL decided to launch this campaign ? Where did the idea come from ?

For some time , we have been talking about placing humanity at the heart of what we do at EHL We want to show that we stand behind brand values important to us and to the next generations , and to highlight EHL as a “good brand ”.

Our Fall ’22 brand campaigns are built around “ The Virtuous Circle ” a film which poetically and symbolically highlights the concept of transmission as part of a virtuous circle

Where does the name Virtuous Circle come from ?

CONNECT WITH MARC BOULLÉ ON LINKEDIN

The film and the messages conveyed are a change of theme for EHL . We are focusing on the role that human interaction plays in an EHL education .

The concept behind the virtuous circle is that transmitting kindness , benevolence , and attention to others ignites a circle of well - being . The world needs people who can start this virtuous cycle , and keep it going .

You can see the film and read more about the concept here

What is the main objective of this campaign ?

It is a brand campaign , so the main objective is to increase our brand visibility. We are also aiming to convey our brand image as that of a positive , progressive brand , in line with the times , with values that are important for future generations

Because of the inspirational , storytelling nature of the video , we have focused on video channels for paid campaigns to support the film They are running in French , German and English on 3 different channels : Traditional TV, YouTube and Google display ads The campaigns are primarily running in Switzerland , in both the French and German - speaking parts , and in Singapore

10 EHL News
EHL News - The Virtuous Circle

How does this campaign differentiate EHL from its competitors ?

We have differentiated both our brand narrative and visual landscape from our competitors in this campaign

The film and the ads around it stand out from the others and have stopping power, which are key elements in effective advertising Instead of focusing on simply promoting our programs quite classically like we usually do in paid advertising , this campaign also brings an inspirational message that neatly ties to EHL’s core values .

Any additional thoughts you ’d like to share with our community about the campaign ?

We have gotten very positive feedback about this campaign from very different people , as well as a fair number of questions , as well as people who “didn ’ t get it ” –which is quite normal for a very conceptual and symbolic campaign . Not everyone has to “get it ”. In the end , what is important is the resulting “ buzz ” - many people are talking about the campaign , which is a great success in itself

The Importance of Networking Events in Times of Skills Shortage

On August 31 st, 2022, We welcomed 21 partner companies from the hotel , gastronomy, and service industries to our Passug campus for Career Day. These events , though absent these past years , are of huge importance to our industry ( which suffers from a shortage of skilled workers ).

Our partners joined us to present new career opportunities to young talents and discuss current developments and the ongoing industry situation .

Highlighting Hospitality Career Opportunities To Young Talents

The hospitality industry is a highly- diverse sector, offering endless opportunities and career paths for passionate professionals With a service and customer mindset (and a dash of entrepreneurship), graduates of hospitality schools are sought - after professionals , not only in the hospitality industry but also in other sectors . This awareness needs to be reinvigorated after the industry has suffered from often negative coverage

The Career Services Team at EHL SSTH maintains an active exchange with top partner companies in the industry. This not only concerns internships and full - time positions , but also the change in industry needs and upcoming trends This ensures that the training of professionals is aligned with the market

" In times of skills shortages , more than ever, our industry needs the right talent who ’ ll bring the skills to meet the current industry challenges . The education duality of practice and theory, altogether with our new curriculum with a higher focus on soft skills , fulfill this requirement

Networking is the key to success in today ' s highly- competitive job market, not only for companies looking for talent but also for students At events such as Career Day, students have the opportunity to learn about job and internship opportunities , while also connecting with top executives and HR managers from the industry.

Renowned Swiss hotels , international chains , and service and tourism companies travel to Passugg each year for Career Day to recruit HF students with an Advanced Federal Diploma of Higher Education in Hospitality Management and Hotel Communication Apprentices . This year there was even a waiting list with more interested companies

We spoke with the industry leaders about the Career Day networking opportunity We wanted to know their top advice for young students at the start of their careers (and what value they see in events such as our career fair).

What Makes Them Travel to Passugg?

“You have to remain open to experiences and roles because you develop new skill sets with each position you hold. Always keep your passion for service first because it’s rewarding and satisfying. If you do this, you don’t have to worry about the money because it follows naturally.”

Montreux Jazz Café At EHL

Open to Welcome You at ‘La Ferme’.

A short overview of what you can expect :

Opening hours:

• Monday to Saturday from 3 to 11 pm

• Sunday : brunch only from 11.30 am to 2 pm

F&B:

As a wine bar, our MJC will offer a selection of wines complemented by small Mediterranean dishes and signature cocktails Reservations are only necessary for brunch on Sundays

What Else? 6 Fun Facts

1. Musical appearances by emerging artists will be programmed by the Montreux Jazz Festival , so keep an eye out for that !

2. We have a brand new staff on board to run our Montreux Jazz Café and our AP students will be running the service section from Monday to Friday

3. There are several Montreux Jazz Cafés in Switzerland , including on the EPFL campus .

4. Our MJC is a family project as no less than three EHL alumni working at MJF were involved in making this idea a reality ( that includes the CEO Mathieu Jaton ).

5. We even share some of our DNA as the founder of MJF, the late Claude Nobs , was also an EHL alumnus ! The opening of our own MJC seems to have been written in the stars

6. One last fun fact ! On the first floor there are several Montreux Jazz Festival posters - however, there are so many festival posters that they didn ' t know how to select which ones to put up so they chose the ones from the birth years of the (entirely new) staff (except for the one from this year, that ' s for the opening or the ‘ birth ’ of this café).

Executive Education

What is EHL’s approach to leadership development ?

EHL Hospitality Business School , founded in 1893 as Ecole hotelière de Lausanne , designs and delivers unique educational formats in human - centricity to a multiple range of industries and service sectors Based on our unique service heritage , we consider people , not digital competences , as the focus of our efforts and actions . A small but important difference as it positions the human value creation in the “ Industry 4.0” as a central element and task

Our leadership development approach aims at creating self - aware individuals that understand how to put people first, invest in human growth and wellbeing , and value long - term benefits over short - term gains

What are three key leadership skills executives need to be successful in business ?

In an ever - changing world , it comes as no surprise that great leaders require an evolving and particular set of skills to afford their companies a competitive edge . Our curricula reflects a commitment to innovation , preservation , and expansion of human - centric themes such as the creation of a community, social accountability, and a sense of purpose , and belonging For that, we develop leadership skills that facilitate constructive human interaction in global environments . Our top three human - centric leadership skills pick are :

1. A Collective Mindset

CONNECT WITH ACHIM SCHMITT ON LINKEDIN

In environments characterized by constant changes , people will increasingly seek help to deal with complex tasks . In these circumstances , leaders who are approachable , transparent, spare confident and show vulnerability, create the right climate of trust to navigate the future .

The boss who is always busy, disconnected , unreachable , and speaks first in meetings will not be able to fulfill future tasks What ’s required today is that the “ leadership ego ” gets out of the way in order to develop a successful organizational culture .

But this is easier said than done To achieve this change of mindset, one should recognize their own success within the success of others

18 EHL News - Executive Education

2. Embracing Empathy

If we are to be guided increasingly by purpose , we need to truly understand what it is that people need and want

This can only be done by forging meaningful connections and tapping into our emotional intelligence . Empathetic leadership is more pertinent than ever with a hybrid workforce

The anonymity that comes with not showing your face at the office needs to be counteracted with an increased emphasis on team spirit and inclusivity, remembering we all have lives outside of work and that it is human to need support.

3. Become Self-reflective

Individuals first need to be aware of their own biases before focusing on the needs of others

What is your approach to sensemaking ? How do you analyze your surroundings ? How do you manage your human interactions ? How do you communicate ? Do you know how to approach a specific cultural background that could be sensitive ?

As companies assess the future of work , how is lifelong learning increasingly important ?

For years , we ’ ve known that a culture of organizational learning strengthens a firm ’s competitiveness , profitability and employee satisfaction . Employees are eager to learn and develop in order to continuously update their knowledge and skills as new technologies and trends become available

The overall importance of lifelong learning has substantially increased So the lifelong learning concept is not new for those interested in attracting , retaining , and growing talent

Individuals and organizations need to develop competences and capabilities that go beyond foundational business skills In the future , the search for organizational success will shift towards creating , upskilling , and reskilling multi - faceted and complex human competences based on problem solving , critical thinking , creativity, computational thinking , and mastering human interactions It is our ambition to become a trusted partner in the design , development and delivery of these lifelong learning paths .

Is online delivery here to stay ?

At EHL , we delivered our first blended program ( MBA in International Hospitality) and course certificates back in 2017. We have since then included online learning in all of our programs from Bachelor to Masters and Executive Education

We believe online delivery and digital learning are here to stay – however, they are educational formats to support and not to replace in - person learning journeys . This way, we see online delivery as highly complementary to in - person delivery

EHL News - Executive Education 19
A culture of organizational learning strengthens a firm’s competitiveness, profitability, and employee satisfaction.

What particular industries should be looking to executive education today ?

We see educational needs more from a competence and skills perspective , instead of a particular industry. Economic trends , such as digitalization and servitization , have deep consequences on the way companies will be managed in the future Teams on various hierarchical levels will need to adapt and update their managerial skills , including both hard and soft competencies . Given our history and positioning , we believe we are ideally placed to provide executives with the right skillsets when guiding others through these uncertainties

How is EHL supporting more women and minorities on their leadership journey ?

The EHL student community is extremely diverse in terms of origins and citizenship Women have consistently represented more than 50% of our students over the recent years At EHL , several initiatives have been put in place to support women and minorities through their studies and to prepare them for their future career.

Given the substantial untapped female leadership potential across the world , we believe that women aspiring to create a positive impact in organizations and society should be empowered to attain their vision and contribute to leadership diversity. For example , Women in Leadership is an EHL initiative that promotes leadership , culture , and policies aimed at diverse , balanced , and people - focused environments

What makes Executive Education at EHL so distinct ?

Based on EHL’s heritage , its brand promise , its culture and its overall positioning , I strongly believe that EHL has a future role to play in the highly competitive leadership education market.

Being in the service business means dealing with human beings on a daily basis Mutual respect, being mindful of ones ’ activities , as well as dealing with a variety of cultures , opinions , and backgrounds are fundamental pillars that we ’ ve mastered for more than 125 years . We offer a differentiated approach to executive education , promoting a focus on human - centred management, service excellence , and customer experience Thanks to a unique and world - class learning environment on our multiple campuses in Switzerland and Singapore , and our industry connections , we are able to create lasting learning experiences that will change executives ’ minds and hearts .

We believe online delivery and digital learning are here to stay – however, they are educational formats to support and not to replace in-person learning journeys.

Interview with Oliver Weibel

Tell us a little bit about yourself

OW: I'm originally from St Gallen, Switzerland Before my studies, I have worked in St. Moritz and Lake of Constance in different properties. During EHL I went to star properties in Cape Town and Bangkok. After that worked in St Moritz at the Lake Konstanz

My last position was that of Director of Sales Marketing for the Einstein Hotel in St. Gallen. This was my first real job upon graduation That’s when I joined the Stamm for the eastern part of Switzerland

Over five years later, and after developing two Michelin Star restaurants, I joined Switzerland Tourism within the ‘Accommodation & Gastronomie’ marketing

OLIVER WEIBEL ON LINKEDIN

I especially focused on increasing the visibility within the hotel industry and making use of the strong network we have

This allowed me to gain further insight into gastronomy, while bringing my hotel expertise to Switzerland Tourism (in terms of distribution, revenue management, and consulting).

For the last few years, we’ve been doing major projects within Switzerland, especially when it comes to combining the hotel and gastronomic side Now, after almost 5 years, I’ll be leaving Zurich (our headquarters). But don’t feel bad for me. I’ll be taking over as a Director of Canada, and that’s going to be a whole new chapter of my life, with its challenges and rewards.

Tell us: what made you join the (Zurich) Stamm?

OW: For me, it’s always been important to fill the gaps between those recent graduates and the more experienced alumni This allows for a common point of access within our network

In the end, it’s our network that counts.

I noticed that there was an active Stamm in Zurich, but nothing happening in eastern Switzerland. Realizing this missed opportunity, I asked to be part of the Stamm, with the hope of giving them a

‘’younger perspective ’’ (at that time , I had just graduated and I thought that some ‘’new blood ’’ would do good for the Stamm * laughs*).

We also noticed that not as many people were participating , and we were trying to fill this gap For me , this meant I could give something back to the network It ’s wonderful to have this interaction with students , and as well the rest of the community.

Congrats on being among the top 5 most active Stamms What ’s been the biggest transformation you ’ ve achieved ?

OW: It was listening to what the active members were happy or unhappy with . Also asking those who didn ’ t participate what they wanted . We also have over 1'400 people on our newsletter, 760 active Facebook members , and a WhatsApp group forZurich

We also did high - end gatherings , sport events , network gatherings , etc Overall , we added a bigger variety of events in order to cater more the individual needs of our Alumnis from 18 up 92 years old

We send out surveys asking when participants want to meet, what their purpose and expectations are .

Tell us a little bit more about the change and transformation you ’ ll be going through with your new opportunity and move to Canada

OW: It ’s definitely a great opportunity. This is one of the advantages of working for Switzerland Tourism as it allows transfers to different countries , while still working for Switzerland Tourism to promote the country I can ’ t say I was afraid ; I decided to move there after all , but I saw this as a big opportunity Of course , there will be changes in my personal life , but I see this change in a positive way

A big focus for me will be to work together with our North American partners to create opportunities for Canadians to see Switzerland as a travel destination . Switzerland Tourism remains a non - profit, so we do not focus on sales but rather on promoting awareness of making Switzerland seen as a country for Canadians to spend more time and to travel to more often

This is an exciting new challenge for me . I am used to working on the hospitality side of things but here the focus is on Switzerland as a whole , and getting Canadians culturally involved with Switzerland , showing them what the Swiss culinary, culture and scenery is like .

By now I know about 50 - 60% on what to expect, the rest will be a reality check .

Learn about the new EHL F& B environment and how the latest concepts , such as the Montreux Jazz Cafe are integrated with the campus development

What attracted you to come to EHL?

CW: Coming from the hotel industry I ’ ve always been around either students or alumni of EHL It ’s a bit of a cliché to say that at the end of one ’s career one comes to Switzerland but Switzerland was a place where I ’ ve always seen being at the end of my career It ' s a bit of a cliché to say that at the end of one' s career one comes to Switzerland , but that ' s what happened .

When the opportunity arrived , I said to myself,

‘’why wait when the best school in the world is knocking at my door ’’? I told myself,

‘’ it ' s for a great project, and above all , it was this project that interested me ’’.

The project was to participate in the opening of the new campus I ' ve done a few hotel openings and I ' ve

CONNECT WITH CHRISTOPHE WONG ON LINKEDIN

loved participating in them , and to be able to do it in a different setting is unique . I thought the time had finally come .

What are the main changes in F & B on the Lausanne campus ?

CW: We are opening 2 new restaurants and a wine bar, there have been quite a few changes in the works , even during the concept phase . The first one was the Montreux Jazz Café ( MJC ), in the ‘ La Ferme ’ building , which is dear to all our alumni

I was involved in this project even before I arrived because my interview was done based on this concept. We' ve been at it for two and a half years now. The school had already signed with the MJC , it wasn ’ t my idea to create this franchise but the whole concept was created by Christian Segui , Executive Chef of the EHL Group , and myself This would be a wine bar where we also serve Mediterranean tapas , open from 3 pm to 11 pm for the last seating We also offer brunch on Sundays , from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm

There have been quite a few changes in the works, even during the concept phase.

Then comes the Canopy space . This one has changed quite a bit in terms of concept during the works Originally, it was meant to be a food court But following a request from the APs (due to an increase in intakes ), we needed a workshop to complement Le Berceau des Sens .

24 Interview with the F&B Director

So we decided to make it a high means , on the one hand , a luxury brasserie that is open to the public . And on the other that is a bit more cafeteria and food court style w a 100% plant - based concept, Le Shadwood

Where did the idea for each concept come from ?

CW: A bit from everywhere ; from the experience that each person in the team had at hands And , of course , from my experiences and where I ' ve been

We' re going to have 14 F& B outlets at EHL , and we also had to make sure that we had a coherent and homogeneous offer, that we had outlets that were all complementary and that we could offer something for all tastes . As a result, now we have a fairly wide range We go from grab - and - go to Berceau des Sens

The different concepts really represent the multiculturality of EHL . Would you say that these new concepts will allow students to experience first hand before they go on placement ?

CW: Yes , completely It ' s true that we have expanded the range of different outlets even further

Let ' s talk about the Montreux Jazz Café at La Ferme . There will be teachers , students from EHL , as well as a team from the Montreux Jazz Festival . How will this interaction work and how will it complement the students ' learning ?

CW: I know that for the alumni , La Ferme is something that is dear to their hearts , where they had great experiences creating unique concepts . Unfortunately, this is no longer the old concept as it has become a fully owned and franchised outlet

Today, we have a wine bar with opening hours and a team in place A team of professionals and teachers will supervise the APs from Monday to Friday. And on Saturdays and Sundays , we will have another team who will complete the service side for the students .
