EHL Passugg Restaurants open for external guests Our Food Festival, held on September 16th, was a great success and provided an opportunity for our students to showcase their skills. Our guests were able to enjoy exquisite samples of local, Asian, Arabic and Mediterranean cuisine from the various food stalls. The dessert buffet was irresistible and there were numerous partners showcasing their unique products and refreshing drinks, all accompanied by live music. Our guests from near and far, as well as our alumni, enjoyed a culinary voyage of discovery with new taste experiences.
Not only was the festival worth a visit, but a guided tour of the campus and a separate aperitif were organized for interested guests and alumni. This led to interesting conversations and valued reunions.
In between, our school management welcomed the alumni and introduced our new alumni contact person, Katrin Pajewski. She has been part of the EHL team in Passugg since July 2023 and was directly available for questions and requests. A big topic was the access to EHL Connect.

EHL Connect-Stay in touch Feedback from our community has shown that there are some challenges to overcome in this regard. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you to contact us at alumni.passugg@ehl.ch so that we can help you to use and activate your accounts at EHL Connect. This is a communication platform where former students can register. At EHL Connect, you can stay in touch with each other, find former fellow students, and view all established Stamms.
At the top of the alumni wish list is currently to have an alumni group here in Chur. Therefore, we are looking for a Stammvater and Stammlady who can proudly support our community in Chur and advance it with their commitment. If you feel interested, please contact us at alumni.passugg@ehl.ch. We look forward to hearing from you!
In addition, all former students and learners of EHL Passugg are welcome to join our alumni groups on Facebook and LinkedIn. Here, alumni can become part of a vibrant and inspiring community and network with other former students.
EHL Passugg Career Day Another highlight in the current semester was the EHL Passugg Career Day. This day has developed into a popular meeting place for hospitality companies, among which an increasing number of alumni can be found. Due to its great success, Career Day is now held twice a year.
At our last event we had a record number of participants, 31 companies. They had the opportunity to present themselves to a wide audience of motivated students. By participating in Career Day, companies not only raised their profile, but also found potential employees who perfectly fit their requirements.
Here is a small insight from the Career Day on August 30th, 2023.

Lastly, one of the most valuable lessons I have learned is the power of humility. I acknowledge that I don't

fill gaps in my knowledge. This combination of humility and a drive for constant learning and improvement
provides a significant advantage in the ever-evolving field of Cybersecurity.

we soon realized that the majority of IT threats are centred around devices, particularly those with direct

Today, state-of-the-art Cybersecurity means Endpoint Protection (EDR). This strategy involves securing all
devices thanks to behavioural based AI interventions and integrating the physical strategy with a Security
Operation Centre. Here, a team of experts constantly monitors and analyses the behaviour of operations
conducted on these devices, identifying and addressing any suspicious activity. Our company is active in

Another trend that's reshaping the Cybersecurity landscape is a shift away from traditional vulnerability assessments and IT penetration tests. While many companies still rely on these services, they're increasingly seen as relics of the past. They offer a snapshot of a company's IT security at a single point in time but fail to provide continuous analysis and assessment.
That's where Attack Surface Management comes in. A more dynamic, proactive approach, it involves continuously monitoring and managing a company's digital attack surface to identify vulnerabilities before they can be exploited. At ITNB, we've incorporated this innovative strategy into our Cybersecurity toolkit through IBM Randori Recon, ensuring our clients benefit from the most up-to-date defences against cyber threats. The future of Cybersecurity is not just about responding to threats, but predicting and preventing them, and these upcoming trends are crucial steps in that direction. The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly expanding. How can we ensure the security of interconnected devices in various industries, and what strategies might you suggest mitigating potential risks? MB: Firstly, it's important to partner with a company that specializes solely in Cybersecurity. The market is currently saturated with many companies that have jumped on the bandwagon, primarily driven by the revenue spike following the rise in cyberattacks. Partnering with a dedicated Cybersecurity firm ensures you're working with experts who are fully focused on protecting your digital assets and have the depth of knowledge required to keep pace with evolving threats.
Secondly, staying abreast of laws and regulations is paramount. For instance, in Switzerland, a new Federal Act on Data Protection came into effect on September 1st. This law imposes hefty fines - up to 250’000 Swiss francs - on individual private people registered at the Commercial Register for inadequate data protection. Compliance with such regulations is not just a legal necessity but also an integral part of

The Digital Era Revolutionizing the Hospitality Industry with CuttingEdge Tools and Apps Consider the following: you just stepped off a flight, eager to unwind and savor the essence of your destination. And to your surprise, instead of grappling with old school check-in lines, you’re greeted by a seamless, tech-savvy welcome that gives your keys in a matter of minutes.
Welcome to the Era of the hospitality industry's digital transformation. You heard it right. We’re currently living in a world where your smartphone is your passport to an exquisite journey, where your hotel room knows your preferences, and where dining reservations are made in a few clicks.
This is an age where technology unfurls its magic at every turn. And the hospitality sector is slowly stepping outside of antiquated processes and boldly embracing innovation. No longer confined to pen-and-paper rituals, our industry is harnessing a dazzling array of tools and apps to not only streamline its operations, but also to elevate your guest experience.
So, let's embark on a journey through this digital wonderland, where the fusion of technology and hospitality is nothing short of mesmerizing.
The Art of Seamless Check-ins Remember the time when you had to stand in line at the front desk, waiting impatiently to check into your hotel room after a long-haul flight? Well, those days are rapidly fading into history.
18
The Digital Era
Thanks to innovative apps and tools, you can now bid adieu to those long queues and grumpy guests. Hotels are offering mobile check-in options, allowing guests to arrive, receive a digital room key, and head straight to their rooms with the help of a smartphone app. This not only saves time but also adds a touch of luxury to the experience.
Personalized Experiences Imagine walking into a hotel, and before you even say a word, the staff knows your name, your favorite room temperature, and the fact that you adore extra pillows. This is no longer a dream but a reality, thanks to the power of data analytics and AI-driven apps.
These tools help hotels gather information about guest preferences and habits, ensuring that every stay feels tailor-made, leaving guests with a sense of awe and satisfaction.
Dining Delights at Your Fingertips Hungry for some sushi? Want to book a table at that new Japanese restaurant in the hotel?
You can say ‘sayonara’ to the days when you had to call the restaurant or visit the front desk to make a reservation. With just a few taps on your smartphone, you can book a table, customize your menu, and even have your favorite dishes waiting for you upon arrival.
These apps provide a seamless dining experience, leaving you free to savor the culinary delights without any hassles.
Digital Concierges Say hello to your new best friend in the hospitality world - the digital concierge. These nifty apps can assist you with everything from recommending local attractions to arranging transportation and even suggesting the best spa treatments.
It's like having a personal assistant right in your pocket, ready to make your guests’ stay unforgettable.
Eco-Friendly Initiatives Going digital isn't just about convenience; it's also about sustainability. And many hotels are embracing eco-friendly apps to reduce their environmental footprint.
Guests can opt for digital room service menus, electronic billing, and energy-saving controls that not only enhance their experience but also contribute to a greener planet.
Conclusion The hospitality industry is undergoing a digital revolution that is making guest experiences more memorable than ever before.
From streamlining check-ins to anticipating guest preferences and promoting eco-friendly practices, the tools and apps in this sector are transforming the way we travel and stay.
As we embrace the digital age of hospitality, one thing is certain: our future stays will be marked by the perfect blend of technology and hospitality, creating unforgettable memories for all travelers.
So pack your bags, download your favorite hotel app, and get ready to embark on a journey where every detail is as unique as your hotel. The digital era of hospitality is here to stay, and it's here to pamper guests like never before.

Sitting with an Alumnus Interview with Fritz Dickamp, AEHL 2013 Please introduce yourself. FD: Certainly. I graduated from EHL back in 2013. Originally from Germany, I've had the opportunity to live in various countries over the years, including Scotland, the United States, and Switzerland. Since 2014, I've been calling Berlin my home.
Shortly after completing my studies, I embarked on a journey to write the business plan for a company now called Studio 49. This was towards the end of 2014. Due to the intricacies of German bureaucracy, it took until the latter part of 2015 to officially establish the company.
As for personal interests, I'm about to turn 33 this year, and I'm an avid fan of both basketball and tennis. You could say I'm a diehard Miami Heat enthusiast. That, in a nutshell, is a bit about me. What brought you to study at EHL? FD: It's quite a simple story, really. We used to vacation in the

same spot every summer with some friends and their families. During one of those vacations, we met a Swiss family with four kids. Three out of those four kids had either attended or were attending EHL. I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do after high school.
After that summer I graduated from high school, and they made a suggestion: "Why don't you come to Lausanne?" Given that three of the kids had some connection to EHL, I thought, "Why not?" I was just 17 at the time. I decided to pay EHL a visit – it was quite a different place back then, for better or worse. The moment I stepped into the school, I was blown away by the atmosphere. By the way people carried themselves, and everything about it. Keep in mind, I had just come from high school in Scotland, so at 17, it was a rather mind-blowing experience.
Two months later, I applied. I went through the entire administrative process – and today I can honestly say that I loved every minute of it. It was a decision that shaped my path, and I'm grateful for it.
The moment I stepped into the school, I was blown away by the atmosphere. By the way people carried themselves, and everything about it.
What gave you the idea of launching a Hospitality Consulting firm? What opportunities did you identify in this sector? FD: When we started we were called LIKE Hospitality Consulting. We pretty much did everything they tell you not to do. First of all, we ventured into consulting, and at the time, I was just 22 years old, while Robin, who was my business partner, was a couple of years older, but

still in his mid-20s. Consulting wasn't typically seen as a young person's game. As well, this was in the hospitality sector, an industry that usually relies on experienced professionals and industry veterans. So, it was a bit unconventional, to say the least.
Robin initially thought he would only be involved in the founding process and had other plans set in stone. But he played a significant role. The name LIKE actually came from Robin. Back then, LIKE stood for Leadership, Innovation, Knowledge, and Exchange. To be honest, we didn't have a grand master plan. We looked at what we were good at and what opportunities lay ahead. Online marketing was gaining momentum at the time, and while it's drastically different from what it is today, we decided to give it a shot.
So, we approached a few potential clients and said, "Hey, can we help you establish a digital presence? If you like the results, you can pay us." We started with virtually nothing, and our business plan, if you could even call it that. It wouldn't have passed any strategy class or pricing strategy review. It took us a good two or three years to find our footing. To figure out how we wanted to build this and the direction we wanted to take. It was a journey worth taking. The company has now been rebranded to Studio 49 – what’s the reason behind this change? FD: We wanted to shift how clients perceived us and our services. That's one of the main reasons we transitioned from being a consulting firm to becoming an agency. The landscape of consulting had evolved over the past decade, and so had agencies, albeit in a different way. Originally, we thought it would take a month, but it stretched to six months.
COVID presented its challenges as well, as it did for everyone, but we tried to make the best of it. Just before the pandemic hit, we started a podcast called "SMACK”.
It began as a hospitality podcast and evolved into more of an edutainment platform for hospitality and tourism, featuring experts and key decision-makers of the industry. SMACK turned out to be one of the best ideas we've had. Especially with the momentum of the pandemic, when people had a lot of time to consume knowledge.
So, why Studio 49? Well, we wanted to bring that agency vibe to the hospitality industry. There weren't many agencies focusing specifically on hospitality, and we felt it was time to change that.
How do you leverage technology and data to optimize services? FD: We're big fans of data analytics, it's like the heartbeat of what we do. It's our way of proving value. For us, it's all about the numbers and showing growth.
Data analytics has come a long way. Nowadays, you can measure things effectively, and that's partly why agencies like ours have become so relevant in the

If you think a decade back, asking someone about the importance of a good Instagram page might not have elicited much excitement. But things have changed drastically.
The saying used to be "Money makes the world go round,"

beyond pretty pictures, and it's clear that to satisfy clients, you need to make things measurable.
The saying used to be "Money makes the world go round," but now it's more like "Data makes the world go around." Of course, we need to be mindful of data protection regulations, especially in Europe, where some countries and consumers take it very seriously. How do you adapt your strategies to changes in technology, algorithms, or consumer behavior? FD: We continuously adapt our strategies. We regularly review our processes and adjust them to what serves the algorithms and the users best. The digital landscape is constantly changing. Algorithms evolve, platforms change, new functions pop up. New features appear, and recently, there's been a significant shift towards AI and the integration of chatbots.
The past couple of years have been a whirlwind of digital advancements, with something new hitting the market every quarter. When there's a flood of new technology. You need to give markets time to digest these technological leaps. As an agency, we're all about adapting swiftly. It's what our clients expect from us. If there's a technological breakthrough, they want to hear it from us first. What emerging trends do you see on the horizon for digital marketing in the hospitality industry, and how is Studio 49 preparing for them? FD: AI is clearly the buzzword of the hour. The question is where this will take us long term. Creativity remains at the heart of what we do. In a world flooded with content, standing out requires innovation. We're crafting creative approaches, and we embrace the possibilities that new technologies offer. It’s important to create new ideas in this process.
Video content is continuously on the rise. Studies say that by the end of 2030, 60% of digital content will be videos. With the visual appeal and engagement, it offers, it's a powerful tool to showcase the hospitality experience.
As for Studio 49, we understand that staying ahead of the game is vital. We're constantly brainstorming new ideas in workshops and trying new tools. It's our way of staying in the loop and figuring out how we can influence consumers to choose our clients over the competition. What are some current digital challenges that the industry is facing in your opinion? FD: If we talk about hotels, traditionally, they haven't been the front-runners in innovation. They've often been busy adapting rather than driving innovation.
Automation plays a big role too, but it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. For your typical 3 or 4-Star
22
Sitting with an Alumnus
properties, automation can work wonders, making processes more efficient. But, for the high-end, ultra-luxe places, it's a different story. Guests at those establishments are after a personal, human touch. So, we need to be smart about how we implement technology and automation, understanding that it varies depending on the type of property.
Now, if you shift your gaze to other sectors within hospitality like airlines and trains. These folks have made great strides in technological advancements early on. Most airlines and train companies have their own apps that work seamlessly, allowing you to do everything from tracking your bags to booking your tickets. So it’s clear: not all hospitality faces the same digital challenges.
The acceptance of technology relies on clear explanations and making it understandable for our clients. While many clients may be tech-savvy, there's a significant percentage that are not. So, how do we bring them into the digital game?
Another challenge, and I wouldn't say it's a challenge per se, but more of an obstacle to seamless development, is data protection. While the idea behind it is sound, the way it was applied, especially in Europe, could have been more unified. The EU laid out some guidelines, and then each country went off to do its own thing with it. This can be challenging for companies operating across multiple destinations.
With regards to sustainability, what considerations do you take into account when designing digital marketing campaigns? FD: Sustainability is doubtlessly on the rise. Some clients make it a requirement to create carbon-neutral campaigns. We've seen requests for proposals (RFPs) where clients evaluate our CO2 efforts before considering us for their projects.
As a digital agency, we do not have much room for maneuvering, but we try to do our part. We have digitalized our processes, changed to eco-friendly materials and we are looking into further adjustments wherever possible. What advice would you give to young graduates looking to succeed in digital marketing within the hospitality sector? FD: Firstly, understand that there's a significant difference between how you use Instagram personally and in digital marketing. You might enjoy creating Instagram stories all day. The reality is that digital marketing involves a substantial amount of data analytics and other aspects than posting on social media.
Beyond that, I would say that pursuing a career in digital marketing, especially within the hospitality sector, is one of the most future-proof choices you can make. The world is becoming increasingly digital and interconnected.
If you become an expert in leveraging this digital landscape to influence people's buying decisions, you will be in high demand. You'll have the opportunity to work anywhere on the planet because the world's interconnectedness allows for that kind of flexibility.
Compared to a decade or so ago, today's digital marketing world is more complex, with various systems, theories, data analytics, and potential pitfalls. You'll need to grasp these nuances before taking on larger campaigns and moving into senior roles.

For a more Conscious Future Interview with Yves Givel
Embodying a balance of spark and stillness, confidence and humility, and depth and lightness…
D
r. Yves Givel, Managing Partner of The Mindfulness Company, previous head of HR for Hyatt overlooking
the EAME and Southwest Asia region, and certified ‘Search Inside Yourself’ teacher, is bringing the benefits of mindful leadership to the workplace… and the world! You had quite a career journey, Yves, since graduating from EHL. What were some of the milestones? YG: Yes, time flies… we just had our 30-years reunion here at EHL last week! Feels like yesterday that we all graduated and embarked on our career journeys. I was very blessed and always had great mentors along the way that helped me grow both as a professional as well as a person. Following my first role after school managing a small hotel in the Italian part of Switzerland, I embarked on my journey with Hyatt…
I started in Montreux in Rooms, then moved to Saudi Arabia in Sales and later HR… and from there onwards I was in several HR leadership roles on hotel level, area level and regional level in several countries. Following the downturn of the financial crisis, we moved to Chicago where I was heading global talent management for Hyatt, before returning to Switzerland 9 years ago to take over the HR leadership role for Europe, Africa,

Middle East, and Southwest Asia. We had the opportunity to live and work in over 12 countries, which was an amazing experience! Since April this year, I fulfilled my dream and started my own company… and this is very fulfilling, energizing, and exciting! Yves, you are introducing mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and mindful leadership to management teams. How did that come about? YG: This really started several years ago, when I was heading Talent Management for Hyatt Hotels Corporation, living in Chicago. As part of my role at the time, we were designing a new leadership model that would outline the critical leadership competencies needed to support the organization’s move towards becoming a purpose-driven company.
To familiarize myself more with the topic of ‘purpose’, I attended a couple of seminars, including Simon Sinek’s ‘Find your Why’ program. It was then that I discovered the power of mindfulness and could very quickly see how this ancient practice could help leaders develop those critical emotional intelligence skills needed these days. Over the following years, I developed my own regular mindfulness practice, and was looking for ways to bring this concept into leadership development.
I subsequently became a certified teacher of the ‘Search Inside Yourself’ program and started implementing this program at Hyatt and later started teaching it as well in public programs and other organizations.
28

What is ‘Search Inside Yourself’ about? YG: Originally developed at Google, Search Inside Yourself
teaches

intelligence, and leadership tools to unlock leaders’ full potential at work and in life. Different than the usual leadership development program, Search Inside Yourself takes

neuroscience, attention-training and emotional intelligence, and provides practical tools that can be applied immediately in life or at work. The program begins with an introduction to the foundations of mindfulness, and from there builds the core emotional intelligence skills, such as self-awareness, self-management, motivation, and empathy and mindful leadership that lead to outstanding leadership, improved performance, and higher levels of well-being.
Search Inside Yourself starts with a live (online or in-person) training, followed by a four-week online
journey. The program is highly interactive, with approximately one-third content and two-thirds experiential exercises, including one-on-one group conversations, attention-training practices, journaling, and listening activities. How can emotional intelligence be developed through mindfulness? YG: We are spending an amazing 47% of our time mind wandering, which means not being present with what we are doing, or with whom we are. We can start developing emotional intelligence by going from ‘autopilot to aware’ – when we are more aware, we are able to find the “space between stimulus and response” in which to choose. To get off this autopilot, we can practice mindfulness, simply defined as “being aware”. Once we are more present, we can be more aware of what is happening in our mind, body, and environment – thus creating greater self-awareness, which is the foundation of all other emotional intelligence domains.
And mindfulness doesn’t have to be difficult… we can practice it in any moment throughout the day, or through mindfulness meditation, a more formal practice of cultivating mindfulness.
Neuroscience also supports the claim that mindfulness builds emotional intelligence. Research suggests that mindfulness meditation leads to beneficial structural and functional changes in areas of the brain related to attentional control, emotion management, and self-awareness. Why is empathy so important in leadership today? YG: Empathetic leaders display a genuine concern for their team members, whether it is their emotional health, the challenges they may face, or even include showing interest in their lives. Empathetic leadership builds good relationships, promotes teamwork, supports work-life balance, creates higher retention rates, maximizes productivity, and most importantly encourages innovation by cultivating the necessary trust and psychological safety within a team.
While the ‘return to the office’ has helped provide a sense of structure and stability, employees’ anxiety has peaked since the pandemic. What corporations see is a bigger call to action: it’s time for leaders to address the social issues affecting organizational wellbeing. Good leaders show strength, adaptability, and creativity. But studies show that empathy is the key to earning trust, and the ability to earn trust is a skill that even good leaders often may lack.
For a more Conscious Future
29
As part of mindful leadership, the concept of the ‘learning organization’ often comes up in your lectures… YG: Yes, this connects to the above… A ‘learning organization’ has the capacity to continuously develop itself, and therefore embrace change and adapt to the ever-changing environment. Which also means that a learning organization must create a culture of trust and psychological safety, with a team climate in which people are comfortable being and expressing themselves. It’s about trust, respect, and care for each other. And as we know, research suggests that psychologically safe teams learn more and perform better. You often talk about the concept of ‘mindful leadership’ – what does this really mean? YG: Mindful leadership is a leadership approach that emphasizes the practice of mindfulness, which involves paying attention to the present moment, non-judgmentally and with intention. Mindful leadership can help organizations create a more engaged, productive, and healthy workforce. It can also improve decision-making, reduce stress, and increase empathy and compassion through the cultivation of emotional intelligence.
Overall, mindful leadership can lead to a more positive and productive work environment, which benefits both the leaders and their teams. You mentioned earlier as well the positive impact mindfulness and emotional intelligence have on wellbeing. Can you tell me more about it? YG: There is a lot of research addressing mindfulness meditation’s positive impact upon emotional and physical wellbeing. In fact, a vast literature of controlled studies has found that mindfulness meditation is related to improved mental health across a variety of disorders, including different anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, and chronic pain symptom reduction.
Being mindful makes it easier to savor the pleasures in life as they occur, helps you become fully engaged in activities, and creates a greater capacity to deal with adverse events. By focusing on the here and now, many people who practice mindfulness find that they are less likely to get caught up in worries about the
30
For a more Conscious Future
future or regrets over the past, are less preoccupied with concerns about success and self-esteem, and are better able to form deep connections with others.
As we talked about earlier, mindfulness practices cultivate emotional intelligence… and another great benefit is that emotional intelligence creates the conditions for our own wellbeing. In a meta-analysis on factors in one’s life that do and don’t impact happiness and wellbeing, psychologist University of California Riverside Professor Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky found several that did and published her findings in the bestseller “The How of Happiness.” The factors she found included things like gratitude, positive social relationships, optimism, and a meaningful life.
You
mentioned that you
recently started your own
business with The
Mindfulness Company… what
prompted this move? YG: I have been teaching mindful leadership programs within Hyatt, in public programs and in other organizations since 2017, and always felt that this was an amazing way for me to bring my purpose to life. I had an opportunity earlier this year to stepdown from my role of head of HR after 30 years with the company, and to start doing the things I truly love!
Under the umbrella of The Mindfulness Company, I teach several mindful leadership programs, including Search Inside Yourself, and in addition offer leadership coaching and HR consulting services. As I said… all the things I truly love!
And a more personal question… what impact has mindfulness had on you? YG: Wow… yes, great question. It did have a profound impact for me on both my personal and professional life. Initially, it really helped me to deal with stressful situations and taught me the ability to stay in the present, ruminate less about the past and the future. I am an emotional person, and my regular mindfulness practice certainly helped me developing better emotional intelligence skills and cultivate emotional resilience… something I believe everybody needs in these challenging times.
The
biggest
shift
for
me
was
probably
the
increased
self-awareness,
and
awareness
overall.
But
sometimes, you must be careful what you ask for… This heightened sense of awareness became very, very painful for me as I started to become more aware of what we humans were doing… With our environment, with the animals, and even with each other. It completely changed my attitude towards life and leadership, and subsequently prompted my changing orientation towards a plant-based diet, and life values such as compassion and kindness. And I feel really good about that!
Where would you see the greatest opportunity for the future? YG: For me, the greatest opportunity we have is to create a world where companies are thriving, fostering an environment characterized by outstanding leadership, focused on performance, as well as compassion, kindness, and wellbeing… And maybe even extend this kindness to all beings!

Let’s Talk about Customs Interview with Lara Muehlethaler, AEHL 2006 The EHL curriculum does not always lead to a career in the hotel industry : this is the case for Lara Muehlethaler, general manager at PESA, a company active in international transports and customs solutions. An exchange with one of our school's alumni.
Could you introduce yourself to our community? LM: My name is Lara Muehlethaler and I'm currently General Manager of PESA in Chavornay, a company specialising in international transport, logistics, warehousing and customs clearance. Before that, I studied at EHL with a focus on Food & Beverages, class of 2006! Lara, can you tell us about your background? LM: I started my CFC as a cook in the Fribourg region with Mr Frederik Kondratowicz, who was managing the Auberge de Zaehringen at the time. The combination of passion and creativity and the rigour of serving a customer were decisive experiences. I completed this training with a professional maturity. I decided to go to EHL, where I took my first lessons in 2003.

Let’s Talk about Customs
The sector in which you work is quite different from the hotel business... LM: Yes, PESA is a company that carries out customs clearance and organises international transport. There's a lot of goods coming in and out of Switzerland that pass through us, whether it's fruit and vegetables, coffee, vintage cars, clothes, furniture, humanitarian supplies,
There's a logistical aspect to everything, and we must coordinate the many people involved around the world and rely on a solid network of partners.
you name it! You don't fully appreciate the scale of import and export flows unless you're in the business: many of the things we consume every day come from abroad and must be transported with the utmost care to their destination. On the other hand, Switzerland can also export its know-how, and once again we're here to facilitate these exchanges. We regularly organise transport by truck, boat or plane, and even by rail, a slightly more environmentally friendly option.
There's a logistical aspect to everything, and we must coordinate the many people involved around the world and rely on a solid network of partners. Our day-to-day work involves dealing with customs, receiving our shuttles from Paris, sending containers to Africa, importing from Asia, etc. Each case is different, and we're a long way from the polite world of the hotel trade, in something much more roughand-ready, a world of transport and administration. Despite this, you find echoes of your studies at EHL in this sector. Can you tell us more? LM: You might think that the job environment in which we evolve at PESA is the complete opposite of what we are used to at EHL, but it's still about service! I think that this is another facet of the values that we are taught during our studies: the demands of a customer are also at the centre of our activities and - rather poetically - I also find here the creativity and rigour that marked out the start of my career.
From the customer to the passing driver, to the partner more than nine hours away, to the representatives of the customs authorities, contact with people is omnipresent, and it's in no way different from what you find in the hotel business. There are also quality requirements. Over the years, I think I can safely say that EHL has given me many of the tools I need to succeed today. What memories do you have of your time at EHL? LM: Apart from the Food & Beverages and Accommodations courses, which were very much rooted in the practical side of the hotel business, I have to say that the themed buffet week is one of my most memorable experiences! The choice of theme, the planning, the search for suitable contacts, the checking of costs, the coordination between teams, the excitement of the execution. It's not just a school where you're taught knowledge, but also values, with the aim of always thinking 'solutions'. And that's something you find everywhere!
Let’s Talk about Customs
33
How do you see the coming years in these respective sectors? LM: Both the hotel industry and international transport are subject to increasingly ubiquitous digitalisation. The hotel industry already has a head start when it comes to online bookings without the need for human contact, while the Federal Customs and Border Protection Office is only now beginning its digital transition with its DaziT project. Where the private sector is ahead of the game and can take risks, public institutions need to be more cautious. How do you think the arrival of artificial intelligence will impact these sectors? LM: It's a bit like the latest 'trend'. For many people, the spectre of job losses looms large at the mention of artificial intelligence, although not all aspects of it have been taken into account. Of course, the hotel industry could benefit from intelligent, self-regulating buildings or improved supply management.
Of course, warehousing logistics and customs will be optimised through automation. Rather than job losses, I think we need to talk about displacement: some jobs will have to adapt to new ones. What's more, we can't do away with the human aspects of some jobs, and I'm convinced of that. No Skynet or Terminator for the moment: the transition to these technologies has to be made intelligently and it will take time, a lot of time. That said, I can well imagine a future in which human contact becomes a luxury and - although dystopian we cannot replace the personal value of individual, tailor-made service. What does the EHL Alumni community mean to you? LM: It's about finding other people with whom you share values and ideals. It's also a tool for maintaining and developing a network: although it's professional in nature, the family aspect of the community allows for simplified and uncomplicated exchanges. We share tips and tricks, and don't hesitate to contact each other.
34
Let’s Talk about Customs
Would you have any advice for our young graduates? LM: From my interview with Messieurs Racine and Najar for my admission to my graduation by Mr Reuland, you don't really realise all the doors that EHL opens for you: I'm still in contact with many of my classmates from that time and I even work with some of them in my current activities. The network you build is important. Of course, whatever company you choose to work for, remember that you're talking to other human beings who come with their own baggage and personalities, whether they're clients or colleagues. Of course, you have to remain rigorous and give your best at all times, and what could be better than reliable partners on whom you can rely on to get ahead?
