ANNOUNCEMENTS LOVE YOUR SCHOOL MONTH – LAST DAYS to make your donation to the Edison PTA and be entered into a drawing for passes for dinner and movie. We’re three-quarters of the way through the school year but only half way to our direct donation goal. NOCHE DE CESAR CHAVEZ – Friday, March 11 we will gather to celebrate the life and work of César Chávez. This evening will also feature a concert by our 2nd grade students and the afterschool music program with Maestra Jacqueline Fuentes. We will have a planning meeting on Wednesday, March 2 at 8:30 a.m. Please join us. APPLICATIONS FOR KINDER 2016-2017 are due by March 7. If you have a younger child ready for Kinder next year (5 years old on or before September 1, 2016) and make sure you have completed your application. Siblings only have a preference if applications are submitted before March 7 – after that, their applications go in the general pool. DUAL IMMERSION TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN AND PRESCHOOL - If you have a child born between 9-2 and 12-2-11 and you’re looking for an earlier start to 90-10 dual immersion, you may be interested the new Transitional Kindergarten (TK) opening at Edison next year. After a year in a TK program, your child then enrolls in Kindergarten. If your child was born between 12-3-11 and 9-2-13 and you would like a dual immersion Preschool experience, your child may be eligible for the new Pre-K program at Edison this fall. Preference will be given to older students. There there will be a language-based lottery for both programs. Call for applications.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: BRIDGES OR WALLS? Last week as Pope Francis visited the US-Mexico border, it was inevitable that someone would ask him what he thought of the promise of a presidential candidate to build a wall on the border. Pope Francis commented that “A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian.” Religious questions and politicians aside, I’ve found myself thinking all week about the Pope’s metaphor of walls vs. bridges and how apt it is for us. When our Immersion Seniors come back for their graduation celebration, I often tell them that their education has fitted them to be multi-cultural bridge builders – and that the world desperately needs people with their skills. Not only do I firmly believe that to be true, but building respect for other cultures along with pride in one’s own heritage is one of the three goals of all dual immersion programs. We exist to be a program where children can learn together to: Develop high levels of proficiency in Spanish and English; Perform at or above grade level in academic areas; Demonstrate positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors. This last goal is one of the reasons that we teach students to look at history, literature, current events, etc. from multiple perspectives. It’s why we learn about the arts and cultures of the peoples of the Americas rather than just studying the Spanish language in isolation. It’s why we talk about our family stories and cultures, where we come from and what’s dear to us, and the dreams we share as a community. Site Council recently authorized funds to begin another mural at Edison – this one in the amphitheater in the main courtyard and painted by Maestra Martha Ramirez Oropeza. We’re beginning to collect ideas and images and want this mural to be a collaborative project with community input. At a few recent parent meetings, parents shared memories of their homes or origin and what they loved about those places. The theme will have something to do with the image of the monarch butterfly that lives between two homes – one in the US and one in Mexico. And it will reflect the fact that many of us have had the experience of migrating or immigrating – leaving behind a beloved home, making a new home and developing as cross-cultural individuals. And maybe the image of a bridge will find its way into the mural, symbolizing our hopes that our students will have the positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors to build bridges between people, rather than walls to separate them.

Vamos a ¾ del camino al fin del año escolar pero solamente a la mitad de nuestra meta de donaciones directas. Solicitudes para Kindergarten 2016 -2017– Deben ser entregadas antes del 7 de marzo. Si ustedes tienen un hijo menor listo para el Kindergarten el año que viene (cumple 5 años antes del 1 de septiembre, 2016) asegúrense de completar la solicitud. Colección para Corazón de Vida – Continuamos colectando ropa interior nueva y calcetines nuevos para los niños del Orfelinato Corazón de Vida en Ensenada, B.C. Hay cajas en cada salón y en el pasillo. ¿Ustedes pueden agregarle a la? Desafortunadamente el paseo del 27 de febrero a Ensenada se ha cancelado. Kindergarten Transicional y Prescolar de Doble Inmersión – Si ustedes tienen un hijo/a que nació entre el 9/2/11 y el 12/2/11 y están buscando un comienzo temprano a doble inmersión de 90-10, pueden estar interesados en Kindergarten Transicional (TK) que se abrirá en Edison el próximo año. Después de un año en un programa de TK, su hijo/a se registra a Kindergarten. Si su hijo/a nació entre 12/03/11 y 09/02/13 y les gustaría una experiencia Prescolar de doble inmersión, su hijo/a puede ser elegible para el programa nuevo de Prescolar en Edison este otoño. La preferencia se les dará a los niños mayores. Tendremos un sorteo basado en idiomas para ambos programas. Llamen para pedir solicitudes.
GRATITUD ¿PUENTES O PAREDES?
La semana pasada el Papa Francis visitó la frontera de Estados Unidos – México, fue inevitable que alguien le preguntará lo que él pensaba de la promesa de un candidato presidencial de construir una pared en la frontera. El Papa Francis comentó que “Una persona quien piensa solamente sobre construir paredes, donde quiera que estén, no construir puentes, no es Cristiano.” Con preguntas religiosas a un lado, me he encontrado pensando toda la semana sobre la metáfora del Papa de paredes y puentes y lo apropiado que es para nosotros. Cuando nuestros estudiantes graduándose del 12º grado de Inmersión regresan para su celebración de graduación, frecuentemente les digo que su educación los ha acomodado para ser creadores de puentes multiculturales – y que el mundo desesperadamente necesita personas con sus habilidades. No solo es que creo firmemente que esto se verdad, pero creando respeto para otras culturas al igual que el orgullo en la herencia de uno mismo es una de las tres metas de programas de doble inmersión. Existimos para ser un programa donde los niños pueden aprender juntos a: Desarrollar altos niveles de proficiencia en español e inglés; Rendir a nivel de grado o más alto en áreas académicas; Demostrar actitudes y comportamientos positivos que cruzan culturas Esta última meta es una de las razones por las cuales les enseñamos a los estudiantes a mirar historia, literatura, eventos presentes, etc. de diferentes perspectivas. Es por lo que aprendemos sobre las artes y culturas de las personas de las Américas en vez de estudiar el idioma español en aislamiento. Es porque hablamos de sobre nuestras historias y culturas de nuestras familias, de dónde venimos y lo que es importante para nosotros, y los sueños que compartimos como comunidad. Recientemente el Concilio Escolar autorizo fondos para comenzar otro mural en Edison – este en el anfiteatro en el patio principal y pintado por Maestra Martha Ramírez Oropeza. Estamos empezando a colectar ideas e imágenes y queremos que este mural sea un proyecto colaborativo con opiniones de la comunidad. En algunas reuniones recientes de padres, los padres compartieron memorias de sus hogares y orígenes y lo que les encantaba de esos lugares. El tema tendrá que ver con la imagen de una mariposa monarca que vive entre dos hogares – una en los Estados Unidos y una en México. Y reflejará el hecho de que muchos de nosotros tuvimos la experiencia de migrar o inmigrar – dejando atrás el hogar querido, haciendo un hogar nuevo y desarrollándonos como individuales de múltiples culturas. Y tal vez la imagen de un puente pueda encontrar su camino hacia el mural, simbolizando nuestras esperanzas que nuestros estudiantes tengan actitudes positivas multiculturales y comportamientos para crear puentes entre gente, en lugar de paredes que los separen.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING CONFIDENTIAL STUDENT DATA A recent lawsuit against the California Department of Education (CDE) is impacting all school districts across the state, including Santa Monica-‐Malibu USD. In April 2012, two organizations, the Morgan Hill Concerned Parents Association and the Concerned Parent Association, filed a lawsuit against the CDE alleging widespread, systemic non-‐compliance by local education agencies with special education laws. The suit also alleges the CDE fails to monitor, investigate and correct such non-‐compliance in accordance with the law. The CDE denies these allegations and is actively defending the litigation. Our district was not involved in the lawsuit and is not the subject of any of the suit’s allegations. Nonetheless, as a part of this lawsuit, CDE has been ordered by the court to release all data it has collected on general and special education students since Jan. 1, 2008. For more information regarding the release of this data and how you can file an objection with the court to consider not releasing your data, visit: http://www.cde.ca.gov/morganhillcase. INFORMACION IMPORTANTE SOBRE DATOS ESTUDIANTILES CONFIDENCIALES La demanda legal en contra del Departamento de Educación de California (CDE por sus siglas en inglés) está impactando a todos los distritos escolares en el estado, incluyendo a Santa Monica-‐ Malibu USD. En abril del 2012, dos organizaciones, la Asociación de Padres Afectados de Morgan Hill y la Asociación de Padres Afectados, entablaron una demanda legal en contra del CDE acusándolo de incumplimiento sistémico generalizado por parte de agencias locales de educación en cuanto a las leyes de educación especial. La demanda alega que el CDE no cumple con monitorear, investigar y corregir el dicho incumplimiento de acuerdo a lo estipulado por la ley. La CDE niega dichas acusaciones y está defendiendo el litigio activamente. Nuestro distrito no está envuelto en la demanda y no es el sujeto de ninguna de las acusaciones de la misma. Sin embargo, como parte de esta demanda, la corte ha ordenado a la CDE de divulgar todos los datos que ha recopilado en cuanto a estudiantes generales y de educación especial desde enero 1 del 2008. In order to maximize learning in Reading, we encourage you to attend this training where you will practice and reinforce some of the most effective strategies when reading at home. EDISON 5TH GRADE STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN CALIFORNIA PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST Beginning this month, our 5th grade students will participate in the California Physical Fitness Test (PFT). The FITNESSGRAM1 is the required annual PFT for students in grades five, seven, and nine in California public schools. This health-related fitness test, developed by The Cooper Institute, is intended to help students acquire lasting habits of regular physical activity. The FITNESSGRAM includes tests for six areas of fitness, including Aerobic Capacity, Body Composition, Abdominal Strength and Endurance, Trunk Extensor Strength and Flexibility, Upper Body Strength and Endurance, and Flexibility. There are two or three test options for most of the fitness areas of the FITNESSGRAM so that all students, including those with special needs, have the chance to participate in the PFT. For those fitness areas that have multiple options, only one option is reported for each student. For each fitness area of the FITNESSGRAM, a student’s performance is classified into the Healthy Fitness Zone (HFZ) or into other zones, depending on the fitness area. For Aerobic Capacity and Body Composition, results are classified as in the HFZ, Needs Improvement, or Needs Improvement – Health Risk. For all other areas, results are classified as in the HFZ or Needs Improvement. The desired performance goal for each test option is the HFZ, which represents a level of fitness that offers some protection against the diseases related to physical inactivity. The Needs Improvement designation indicates an area of fitness where a student would benefit from activities designed to improve performance in that area. Needs Improvement – Health Risk is a designation that specifically indicates increased health risks due to the level of fitness. The HFZ ranges and performance classifications are updated on a regular basis; therefore, student results should always be evaluated against the current year HFZ charts. Individual results will be shared with families. These results will help students understand their individual levels of fitness. Students are encouraged to talk about these results with their parents or guardians and their physical education teacher. Parents and guardians can use these results to help their children plan appropriate fitness activities. ALUMNOS DE QUINTO GRADO PARTICIPAN EN EL EXAMEN DE APTITUD FISICA Nuestros estudiantes del quinto grado están comenzando el Examen de aptitud física (conocido por sus siglas en inglés como el PFT). El FITNESSGRAM2 es el PFT que se administra anualmente y es obligatorio para los estudiantes de los grados cinco, siete, y nueve de las escuelas públicas de California. Este examen de aptitud física, desarrollado por The Cooper Institute, tiene como meta ayudar a los estudiantes a adquirir hábitos permanentes de la actividad física en sus vidas. El FITNESSGRAM incluye pruebas para las áreas claves de actividad física que incluyen la capacidad aeróbica; la composición corporal; la fuerza y resistencia abdominales; la fuerza y flexibilidad de la musculatura extensora del tronco; la fuerza y resistencia de la musculatura de los miembros superiores; y la flexibilidad. Existen dos o tres opciones para la mayoría de las pruebas del FITNESSGRAM, para permitir que todos los estudiantes, incluyendo aquellos con discapacidades, tengan la oportunidad de participar en el PFT. Para las áreas del examen que tienen opciones, sólo se reporta una opción para cada estudiante. Para la composición corporal, los resultados se clasifican como dentro de la HFZ, Necesita mejorar, Necesita mejorar – Riesgo a la salud. Para toda las otras áreas de actividad física del examen, los resultados se clasifican como dentro de la HFZ o Necesita mejorar. El nivel del desempeño deseado para cada opción de prueba es la HFZ, lo cual representa un nivel de condición física que ofrece algo de protección contra las enfermedades relacionadas con la inactividad física. La calificación de Necesita mejorar indica un nivel donde el estudiante se beneficiaría de actividades diseñadas para mejorar su desempeño en esa área. La calificación de Necesita mejorar – Riesgo a la salud indica aún mayores riesgos de salud debido al nivel de condición física. Los rangos y niveles de desempeño del HFZ se actualizan regularmente. Por esta razón, los resultados de los estudiantes siempre deben evaluarse en comparación con las tablas HFZ actualizadas. Los padres o guardianes recibirán sus resultados en cuanto completen el PFT. Estos resultados ayudarán a los estudiantes a entender sus niveles individuales de condición física. Se recomienda que los estudiantes hablen acerca de estos resultados con sus padres o representantes y con su maestro de educación física. Los padres y representantes pueden utilizar estos resultados para ayudar a sus hijos planear las actividades físicas apropiadas. This season we are fielding a “Novice” team for tennis players who are just starting to compete. We are also fielding a “Satellite” team for players who are ready to advance from the novice team and an “Open” team for more experienced competitors who may play on their high school or middle school team. Come join the Santa Monica Tennis Junior Team which competes in Spring, Fall and Winter. Matches are at country clubs and tennis facilities located primarily on the Westside. A schedule of matches and match locations will be distributed one week prior to the first match. Every other Sunday afternoon. The 2016 Spring season beginning Sunday, April 10 for the Novice and Open Teams and Sunday, April 17 for the Satellite Team Matches will be at 1:00pm or 3:00pm or 5:00pm and will last 2 hours. Transportation is not provided. Fill out this flier. Not sure which team to join, ask Coach Richard Goldenson. $120 for 5 to 6 matches. There will be a 6th match if the team makes the playoffs.
