Denn was 1995 hinter den Kulissen seinen Anfang nimmt, soll vorerst geheim bleiben: Eine neue Schweizer Airline – eine kleine Konkurrenz zur damals noch schier unantastbaren Swissair. Der Erstflug erfolgt am 10. Februar 1996, einem kalten Wintertag in Zürich, mit der MD-83 namens «Arosa» ins frühlingshafte Larnaca nach Zypern. Schon damals: der Sonne entgegen. Trotz turbulenten Zeiten schafft es Edelweiss schnell, die Herzen der Passagiere zu gewinnen. Nicht nur das originelle Design der Flugzeuge, auch die herzliche, schweizerische Gastfreundschaft an Bord sind die kleinen Extras, mit denen Edelweiss punktet. Die Fluggesellschaft wächst, stellt die Flotte auf neue, leistungsfähige Flugzeuge von Airbus um und steigt ins Langstreckengeschäft ein. Edelweiss wird zum Global Player – und attraktiv für Partner: Nach 13 Jahren bei Kuoni wechselt Edelweiss am 1. November 2008 zur Lufthansa Gruppe. It is an impressive performance when you consider how it all began: in a “broom cupboard” at the head office of Kuoni in Zürich, with a table, a chair, a pad of paper, a pen and a telephone extension. The project that began behind the scenes in 1995 started life as something of a secret: a new Swiss airline – and a new, small-time competitor to Swissair, who at the time appeared invincible. The first flight took off on 10th February 1996 on a cold winter’s day in Zürich, with the MD-83 called “Arosa” landing in the spring weather of Larnaca, Cyprus. Even back then: towards the sun. Despite some turbulent times, Edelweiss quickly succeeded in winning over the passengers’ hearts. It isn’t just the original design of the aeroplanes, Edelweiss also scores points with its little extras, such as its friendly Swiss hospitality on board. The airline grows, the fleet changes over to new, high performance Airbus aeroplanes and moves into long haul flights. Edelweiss has become a global player – and after 13 years at Kuoni, on 1st November 2008, Edelweiss becomes part of Lufthansa Group. olkenkratzer schrauben sich dicht gedrängt in die Höhe. Vancouver ist eine pulsierende Grossstadt, die wohl fast alles zu bieten hat. Überraschenderweise auch eine grüne Halbinselspitze, die fragil wirkt neben ihrem zugepflasterten Hauptteil. Aus der Vogelperspektive wirken die Hochhäuser wie eine Menschenmenge, die ungeduldig darauf wartet, durch den Eingang eines Openair-Festivalgeländes gelassen zu werden. Wer nicht weiss, dass die bewaldete Oase ein Nationalpark ist, könnte befürchten, dass diese innert kürzester Frist genauso aussieht wie die City. Doch das kann nicht passieren. Dieser grüne Punkt, der Stanley Park, ist den Vancouvern heilig. Sie lieben den nahen Erholungsort mit Gärten, wilden Tieren und romantischen Stränden. Einbahnstrasse ins Paradies Von der City aus gelangt man am besten entlang der so genannten Seawall zum Stanley Park. Auf der 22 Kilometer langen Ufermauer erstreckt sich eine autofreie Fahrbahn. Klare Unterteilungen bezeichnen die Bereiche für Fussgänger, Fahrradfahrer und Inlineskater. Der 8,8 Kilometer lange, mittlere Teil der Seawall umrundet den Stanley Park. Intelligenterweise im Einbahnverkehr, und zwar im

kyscrapers reach for the dizzy heights. Vancouver is a lively metropolis that offers almost everything. And surprisingly, that also includes a green peninsula which seems fragile in comparison with its built-up principle part. From the bird’s eye view, the skyscrapers look like a crowd of people, impatiently waiting to be let onto an open air festival area. Those unaware that this oasis of woodland is actually a national park could be forgiven for thinking that it might soon look like the rest of the city. Yet that isn’t going to happen. This green space, Stanley Park, is sacrosanct to the people of Vancouver. They love their place of recreation with its gardens, wild animals and romantic beaches. A one way street to paradise Starting from the city centre, the best way to Stanley Park is via the so-called Seawall. A car-free road that stretches along the 22 kilometre long waterside promenade which features clearly delineated sections for pedestrians, cyclists and inline skaters. The 8.8 kilometres long central part of the Seawall circumnavigates Stanley Park. And intelligently so, with one way traffic that flows in the anticlockwise direction. At this amazing location you’re never alone – and even when the weather isn’t so good. And certain sections of the road become narrow paths bordered by a rock face on the left and the coast on the right, meaning it’s all the better that nothing is approaching from the opposite direction. A variety of cycle hire shops ensure a wide range of comfortable, fast or stylish bicycles are on offer. Helmets are compulsory, being required by the law in Vancouver. Taking a cycle lock is also worthwhile, as in Stanley Park in particular, stopping to explore some of the 200 kilometres worth of footpaths on the peninsula on foot is highly recommended.

eplant war ein Aufenthalt von sieben Monaten am anderen Ende der Welt. «Am Ende verbrachte ich mehr als eineinhalb Jahre in Australien, Neuseeland, Bali und der Südsee», erklärt Sabrina Zingg. Nach der technischen Berufsmatura will die St. Gallerin hinaus in die grosse Welt. «Ich verliebte mich in den lockeren Lifestyle von Down Under und die Gastfreundlichkeit und Gelassenheit der Menschen.» Vor allem aber packt sie der Virus des Wellenreitens. Was nicht immer ganz ungefährlich ist: Schwappt eine Welle über den Surfer, kann er sich von seinem eigenen Brett schlimme Verletzungen holen. Sabrina brach sich einmal die Nase. Die Ostschweizerin lässt sich davon aber nicht von ihrem Hobby abbringen. «Ich bin ein Ruech», sagt die 30-Jährige und lacht. Sieht man sie adrett lächelnd in der Edelweiss Uniform, mag man es kaum glauben. Nach ihrer Rückkehr in die Schweiz arbeitet sie zwei Jahre in ihrem erlernten Beruf als Bauzeichnerin in St. Gallen. Anschliessend macht sie einen 15-monatigen Trip im eigenhändig zum «Bett auf Rädern» umgebauten PW durch Mexiko und Mittelamerika bis nach Kolumbien. An den naturbelassenen Stränden der Baja Californa verbringt sie einmal drei Tage surfend, ohne eine andere Menschenseele zu treffen. Die Eltern besuchen die Weltenbummlerin in Acapulco. «Von meinem Vater, der sechs Jahre auf Montage arbeitete, habe ich wohl das Fernweh-Gen geerbt. Von ihm und meinem Bruder, einem gelernten Polymechaniker, lernte ich schweissen und drehen. from St. Gallen, wanted to see some of the world. “I loved the laid back lifestyle Down Under as well as the relaxed and friendly people.” And she became a huge surfer, an activity which certainly isn’t lacking in its risks: if a wave catches the surfer at the wrong time they can be severely injured by their surfboard. Sabrina, for instance, broke her nose. But this Swiss girl isn’t one to ditch her favourite hobbies easily. “I’m a fun-loving kind of girl,” says the 30 year old, and laughs. Yet you might not believe she’s a surfer girl when you see her in her Edelweiss uniform, wearing her professional smile! After returning to Switzerland she spent two years working in her vocational field of technical drawing in St. Gallen. Waves are something of a rarity in Switzerland, and that special feeling of being part of the energy of the sea before catching the wave wouldn’t leave her alone. “At least I was able to go snowboarding in the winter.” It isn’t long before her yearning for the relaxed lifestyle gets the better of her. Instead of training as a surfing instructor, however, Sabrina flies to Whistler in Canada and starts training to be a snowboarding instructor. She then makes a 15 month trip in a car she herself converted into a “bed on wheels” through Mexico and Central America, finally ending up in Colombia. At the unspoilt beaches of

Zu Beginn ist die behütete 14-jährige Tochter an allem anderen interessiert als am Snowboardfahren. «Sie lud mich zum Schwimmen im Hotelpool ein oder ich verbrachte Zeit in ihrer riesigen Hotelsuite. Beim Abschied konnte ich mich fast nicht aus ihrer Umarmung befreien. Es war mir gelungen, ihr meine Passion fürs Snowboarden weiterzugeben und ich wurde gleichzeitig zu ihrer wichtigsten Bezugsperson, da sie sonst die meiste Zeit mit ihrem Bodyguard oder dem Fahrer verbrachte», erklärt die fröhliche Powerfrau nachdenklich. «Snowboardlehrer ist ein Lifestyle», so die Sportbegeisterte. Standesgemäss lebt sie noch heute in St. Moritz in einer WG mit anderen Ski- und Snowboardlehrern. Eine Kollegin arbeitete als Flight Attendant bei der Swiss. Her parents visit their intrepid daughter in Acapulco. “I’m pretty sure I inherited my itchy feet from my father, who spent six years as a travelling tradesman. My father and my brother, who is a trained mechanic, taught me all about welding and mechanics, skills which I put to very good use when my car broke down”, explains Sabrina. “Being a snowboarding instructor is a lifestyle” Back in Switzerland Sabrina starts working as a snowboarding instructor at St. Moritz skiing academy. To the well-heeled visitors to the cosmopolitan capital of Engadine, a skiing or snowboarding instructor is often expected to do more than just accompany them on the slopes, however. Wealthy visitors from Russia and the Middle East book the young woman as a snowboarding instructor, tourist guide and nanny all-in-one, with night skiing, ice skating or sledging in Bergün all on the menu. And her tips often beat her daily wages. As an expression of their thanks, one Russian family has even invited her to their family villa in Tuscany. The family are regular guests at the five star St. Moritz hotel Badrutt’s Palace. Their sheltered 14 year old daughter had almost no inter-

Und bekommt von der Edelweiss eine Chance. Seit dreieinhalb Jahren bezieht sie im Winter unbezahlten Urlaub, um als Snowboardlehrerin in St. Moritz tätig zu sein. «Die Abwechslung hält mich frisch.» In der Freizeit besteigt sie mit ihrem Freund Jochen so manchen Bündner Gipfel. Und zwischendurch gerne auch mal einen Berg in Chile oder Japan.

She has now been at Edelweiss for three and a half years, and takes unpaid leave in the winter to work as a snowboarding instructor in St. Moritz. “The variety keeps me fresh.” In her free time, Sabrina enjoys hiking in the Engadine peaks with her boyfriend Jochen, sometimes taking in a mountain somewhere a little further afield such as Chile or Japan.

Wendy Holdener, who hails from Unteriberg, is one of the best slalom skiers in the world. Her success, however, has cost her none of her charm. Interview Mario Wittenwiler Fotos Nico Schaerer

Wendy, Sie reisen zurzeit mit der Schweizer Ski-Nationalmannschaft von Rennen zu Rennen. Sind Sie gerne unterwegs? Wendy Holdener: Ja, klar. Ich erlebe gerne neue Sachen, finde es spannend, neue Orte kennen zu lernen. Ich komme aber immer wieder gerne nach Hause ins Ybrig. Hier sind Sie aufgewachsen. Wir treffen Sie vor der Druesberghütte. Was bedeutet Ihnen diese Heimat? Sehr viel. Hier oben kenne ich alles, bin mit allem vertraut, weiss um die schönen Ecken. Meine Freunde und Familie sind hier zu Hause. Auch ich gehöre ganz einfach hierhin. Was gefällt Ihnen an Ihrem Wohnort Unteriberg besonders gut? Die Umgebung mit den Bergen gefällt mir sehr gut, die schöne Natur. Trotzdem ist man hier nicht völlig abgelegen: Ich bin auch schnell in der Stadt. Ybriger gelten gemeinhin als etwas kauzig. Ziehen Ihre Nati-Kolleginnen Sie manchmal mit Sprüchen über den Ybrig auf? Eigentlich nicht gross. Praktisch alle von uns kommen aus Bergdörfern oder zumindest ländlichen Gebieten. Wir sind gleich mehrere Athletinnen aus dem Kanton Schwyz und der Innerschweiz: Jasmina Suter ist auf dem Stoos aufgewachsen, Michelle Gisin stammt aus Engelberg.

Es ist bekannt, dass Skifahrerinnen unterwegs oft das Zimmer teilen. Mit wem tun Sie das meistens? Normalerweise mit meiner Kollegin von der Engelberger Sportschule Joana Hählen. Das kommt aber nicht mehr so häufig vor wie früher, da sie Speed fährt und ich die technischen Disziplinen Slalom und Riesenslalom fahre. An den Rennen teile ich das Zimmer meistens mit Michelle Gisin.

Wendy, you spend a lot of time with the Swiss national skiing team going from one race to the next. Do you enjoy travelling? Wendy Holdener: Yes, of course. I like experiencing new things and love getting to know new places. But I’m always happy to get back home to the Ybrig. You grew up here. We’re meeting in front of the Druesberghütte. What does your home region mean to you? It means a lot. I know everything up here and everything that happens, including all the nice places to visit. My friends and family also live here. I feel as though I simply belong here. What do you like the most about the place where you live, Unteriberg? I really like the mountains and the beautiful natural scenery. But you’re not completely isolated here: I can still make my way into the local town very quickly. The people of the Ybrig region have a reputation for being a little odd. Do your colleagues in the national team ever make comments about Ybrig? Not really, no. We nearly all come from mountain villages or rural areas. Several of the athletes originate from Schwyz Canton and from Central Switzerland: Jasmina Suter grew up in Stoss and Michelle Gisin comes from Engelberg. Skiers frequently share rooms when they are travelling. Who do you tend to share with? I usually share with my colleague from Engelberg sports academy, Joana Hählen, although I don’t find myself sharing rooms with her so often nowadays as Joana competes in the speed disciplines, while I’m in the technical disciplines of slalom and giant slalom. When I’m racing I usually share with Michelle Gisin. All friendships aside, is it not the case that your colleagues in the national team are your competitors at the same time? Yes, that’s true. It goes without saying that everyone wants to ski as fast as they possibly can. But the achievements of colleagues can also encourage everyone to do their best and are good for the team. How do you deal with the pressure to succeed? I have been known to put myself under too much pressure, which has rarely had a good outcome. I don’t feel the team or the coaches putting me under any pressure, however. And until now, I’m happy to say that the same can be said of the media.

Bei aller Freundschaft sind Ihre National mannschafts-Kolleginnen gleichzeitig auch Ihre Konkurrentinnen. Das ist schon so. Natürlich will jede für sich selbst möglichst schnell skifahren. Erfolge der Kolleginnen können gleichzeitig aber auch anspornen und sind gut für das Team. Wie gehen Sie mit Erfolgsdruck um? Ich mache mir manchmal selbst etwas zu viel Druck. Daraus resultiert meistens nichts Gutes. Vom Team oder den Trainern spüre ich aber keinen Druck. Und von den Medien bis jetzt glücklicherweise auch nicht. Diese bezeichnen sie dafür gerne als «Heidi auf Ski» oder das neue «Skischätzchen der Nation». Haben Sie eigentlich einen Freund? Muss ich darauf eine Antwort geben? Nein. Wechseln wir doch das Thema. Erinnern Sie sich an Ihren ersten Flug? Da war ich 15 Jahre alt und flog mit meiner Familie in die Ferien nach Marbella. Meine beiden älteren Brüder versuchten mir Angst zu machen, indem sie mir erzählten, dass schon wieder eine Nachricht von einem abgestürzten Flugzeug in der Zeitung stehe. Dementsprechend nervös war ich am Tag des Fluges. Natürlich ist dann alles gut gegangen. Fliegen Sie gerne? Eigentlich schon. Vor allem schätze ich es, so schnell und bequem von Ort zu Ort zu kommen.

Könnten Sie sich vorstellen als Flight Attendant zu arbeiten? Ja, das wäre sicher eine coole Erfahrung. Allerdings frage ich mich, wie ich mit dem dauernden Stress und dem Jetlag umginge.

The media likes to call you “Heidi on skis” and the “nation’s new skiing sweetie”. Do you have a boyfriend? Do I have to answer that question? No. Let’s talk about something else. Do you remember your first flight? Yes, I was 15 years old and I flew on holiday to Marbella with my family. My two older brothers tried to scare me by telling me about how they had just read about yet another plane crash in the newspaper, which meant I was pretty nervous on the day of the flight. Of course, everything went well though. Do you enjoy flying? Yes I do. I like being able to get from place to place quickly and comfortably. Could you ever imagine working as a Flight Attendant? Yes, I’m sure it would be a fun experience. But on the other hand, I do wonder how I would deal with all of the stress and the jet lag. How do you pass the time on longer flights? I sleep if I can, or I read a book. I never get bored. Sometimes I do a crossword puzzle with one of my team colleagues. Does being a skier mean you travel with a lot of luggage? When I went training in Argentina in the autumn, I took 20 pairs of skis with me. We often lament that we should have taken up a different sport like swimming! Isn’t that pretty bothersome at check-in? No, we usually do a group check-in. In Zürich it’s very well organized and barely takes any time at all. But it really is crazy how much stuff we carry around with us! What is your favourite country and your favourite destination? I like visiting Italy. I’ve been to a lot of different cities – but there are also a lot that I still want to see. There are so many places, to put it bluntly I’d like to go everywhere that I haven’t been yet. Where would you really like to go? Prague, Amsterdam... quite a lot of places!

Anywhere else? As a skier it’s naturally the case that I’ve been to a lot of winter destinations. We usually go straight from the airport into the car and to the skiing location, and once we’ve done our training or the competition is over, it’s back onto the aeroplane. We

Wendy Holdener (*12.5. 1993) ist mit zwei 辰lteren Br端dern in Unteriberg im Kanton Schwyz aufgewachsen. Mit drei Jahren stand sie im Hoch-Ybrig zum ersten Mal auf den Ski. Zu ihrer Heimat, dem Ybrig, verbindet sie eine starke emotionale Beziehung. Wendy Holdener (*12.5. 1993) grew up with two older brothers in Unteriberg in the Canton of Schwyz. She went skiing for the first time on the Hoch-Ybrig peak when she was just three years old. She is strongly attached to her home region of Ybrig.

Wie beschäftigen Sie sich während der langen Zeiten im Flieger? Wenn ich kann, schlafe ich. Oder ich lese ein Buch. Langweilig wird es mir nie. Manchmal löse ich zusammen mit einer Kollegin ein Kreuzworträtsel. Reisen Sie als Skifahrerin eigentlich mit viel Gepäck? Zum Herbsttraining in Argentinien hatte ich 20 Paar Skis im Gepäck. Da sagten wir uns auch schon scherzhaft, dass wir lieber einen anderen Sport, wie zum Beispiel Schwimmen, ausüben sollten! Ist das nicht wahnsinnig umständlich beim Check-in? Nein, denn wir machen Gruppen-Check-in. In Zürich ist das super geregelt und geht sehr schnell. Es ist aber tatsächlich verrückt, wieviel Material wir mit uns rumschleppen. Welches ist Ihre Lieblingsdestination? Ich bin gerne in Italien. Städte kenne ich viele, es gibt aber auch viele Orte, an die ich noch hin will. Ich kann gar nicht alles aufzählen, ich würde überall gerne hin, wo ich noch nicht war. Wohin besonders gerne? Prag, Amsterdam... da gibt’s viele! Als Skifahrerin kenne ich ja vor allem Winterorte. Bei uns geht’s meist vom Flughafen mit dem Auto direkt ins Skigebiet und nach dem Training oder den Rennen wieder zurück auf den Flieger. Von Stadt und Land sieht man da meistens nicht sehr viel. Ich würde beispielsweise sehr gerne mal nach Australien. Und meine Brüder besuchen, der eine wird dieses Jahr in Seoul, der Hauptstadt von Südkorea, studieren und der andere in Hongkong arbeiten. Ich war auch noch nie privat in den USA, Südamerika würde mich ebenfalls reizen, Kanada... Stellen Sie sich vor, das Geld würde keine Rolle spielen. Welche Gadgets hätte Ihr persönlicher Privatjet? Mehrere Betten, damit auch meine Freunde mitfliegen könnten. Eine Bowlingbahn wäre auch cool! Und ein Parkplatz für mein Auto, ein Audi.

Skiverrückte Familie Wendy Holdener (21) ist mit ihren zwei älteren Brüdern Kevin (25) und Steve (27) in Unteriberg/SZ aufgewachsen. Mit dem Hoch-Ybrig hatten sie ein Skigebiet direkt vor ihrer Haustüre. Bereits ihr Vater Martin und ihre beiden Brüder fuhren für den lokalen Skiclub Drusberg erfolgreich Skirennen. Im Dezember erreichte Wendy mit dem dritten Platz beim WeltcupSlalom von Kühtai ihr zweitbestes Resultat.

A skiing-mad family Wendy Holdener (21) grew up with her two older brothers, Kevin (25) and Steve (27) in Unteriberg, Schwyz. With the Hoch-Ybrig, they had a skiing area on their doorstep. Her father Martin and her two brothers also successfully competed in ski races for the local skiing club Drusberg. In December, Wendy achieved her second best result ever, taking third place in the Kühtai Slalom World Cup.

till liegt die Kirche des heiligen Johannes von Kaneo am Ohridsee. Nicht umsonst zählt die Gegend zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Eine friedliche Oase in einer Region, welche in ihrer Geschichte immer wieder unruhige Zeiten erlebte. Das südbalkanische Mazedonien liegt auf der Kulturgrenze von Völkern, Traditionen, Religionen und Lebensstilen. Im Bewusstsein vieler Menschen sind die langjährigen ethnischen Konflikte, die dort schwelten, immer noch verhaftet. Hand aufs Herz: Ferien in einem Balkanstaat – wer hätte das vor zehn Jahren gedacht? Dabei gründen die Vorurteile gegenüber Mazedonien in einem verbreiteten Unwissen – obwohl in der Schweiz eine grosse Diaspora von Mazedoniern lebt. Die Fussballstars der Schweizer Nationalmannschaft Admir Mehmedi und Blerim Dzemaili gehören dazu. Die politische Lage in Mazedonien hat sich längst beruhigt. Das vielseitige Land hat sich politisch, sozial und kulturell in Europa integriert. 25 000 Quadratkilometer, eine Fläche, halb so gross wie die Schweiz. Zwei Millionen Einwohner, ein Viertel davon albanischer Herkunft. 500 000 Menschen machen Skopje zu einer lebendigen Hauptstadt mit weltläufigem Format. Für Besucher ohne Scheuklappen hat es extrem viel zu bieten. Mazedonien verfügt zwar über keine Küste, dafür über eine riesige Zahl an Naturschönheiten abseits des Massentourismus. The southern Balkan country of Macedonia is situated at a cultural cusp of peoples, traditions, religions and lifestyles.
