ase ails ad, e.

elcome to the March & April edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park. These was a time when the release of an album by my favourite group prompted me to fork out upwards of £1.99 to buy the LP. The ensuing months would see me play the record over and over. (FYI, I bought Best of T Rex, but also bought Ten Years After to impress my cool friends.) Nowadays, these heroes of the ‘70s have long since departed, but new groups fill their roles, and duly release new music. When I hear of this, I bring up their new stuff on Spotify and listen to it for, well, sometimes a whole 5 minutes. Then I think how nice it would be to listen to something else. Similarly, I find something new on Netflix, watch it for, say 6 minutes, then begin to wonder what else is on. Likewise, I see on Kindle a likely looking work that deserves my attention. Let’s say I read it for 7 minutes before flicking back to my collection and noticing some short stories which I could read. This surfeit of choice means that I shall never know music like I knew T Rex. I shall never engross in TV as I did once in Steptoe. I shall never read now as I used to. And why? Because technology has given me the option to stray aimlessly and endlessly.

GUGLIELMO MARCONI or Pings, Patents and Poole STORY: DAVID YOUNG

T

his is another story of the quitegoods. Of the runners-up, the also rans and the ones that just ran away. Of the flames that never flared too fiercely, or flickered for a while and then faded. We’re not all immortals. Some of us are quite good, though. And some of the quite-goods have their moments, when they flicker and fade.

Amongst the useless bits of information that I randomly gathered at primary school was the name – or so they said – of the man who invented the television. John Logie Baird. It was a name that stuck with me through every pub quiz, partly because it had the strange word Logie in it, which must have amused me at primary school, and partly because inventing television was up there

MARCONI'S FIRST RADIO TRANSMITTER 8

GUGLIELMO MARCONI with creating the world as one of the greatest ever achievements. Except it’s not true. John Logie Baird didn’t invent television. Now, I can imagine the consternation in pub quizzing teams and amongst sniggering school boys (he said Logie!). Baird was very clever, but the thing that he is most famous for was called a televisor, which sent a still image from one side of the room to the other. It’s not exactly Sky Sports. More akin to a paper dart than a television. But JLB, as nobody calls him, has gone down in folklore with his questionable invention. If I were in a pub quiz team, (which would necessitate me both making friends and then meeting them) and if the question came up as to who invented television, then I’d annoy my newfound friends by insisting that the answer be Marconi. We’d lose the quiz and I’d never have to see my friends again, but they would go away enlightened. Win win. You want to disagree? You want a fight? Yeah? Well what do you think television is? If you reckon that it’s seeing a still image in a corner of the room, then you can have Baird as your pioneer, and you can sit and watch that still image for a day or so. But my idea of television (encapsulated, we can all agree, in Celebrity Wife Swap) is a signal transmitted from elsewhere and reproduced on a device. That’s what Marconi achieved in 1901 when he broadcast the first Transatlantic signal. Without Marconi, we might never have heard of the USA.

MARCONI'S 1901 WIRELESS APPARATUS

Marconi was born in Bologna in 1874. His father was Italian aristocracy and his mother belonged to the Jamesons family, of Irish whiskey renown. His parents hired private tutors for the young Guglielmo’s education. As a teenager he developed an interest in the growing science of electricity, and particularly in radio telegraphy. (I know – which of us has not gone through that adolescent phase, awkward, spotty, gangly, but fascinated by radio telegraphy?) One can imagine his mum, with her background in whiskey distilling, imploring the lad to leave off the science stuff and to go off the rails a bit with his mates. But Marconi, without enrolling, went on to attend science lectures. I don’t know whether he ever got to try Mum’s whiskey. At Bologna University, and across the world, scientists were developing ideas around transmitting electromagnetic waves. A key development was the ability to detect and receive these waves, in work done by Heinrich Hertz. But the prevalent view was that the waves travelled in straight lines. Marconi, at the age of 20, went beyond this misconception. In his attic, with his butler (I know – which of us has not gone through that phase of doing science in the loft with the butler?) Marconi set up a receiver that would ping a bell when it detected lightning. He built on this progress to develop a system whereby, upon pressing a button on one side of the room, a bell could be made to ring elsewhere. This was probably useful to summon the butler when the whiskey ran out. This concept grew into portable transmitters and receivers. Marconi came to England to find support and to March & April 2020

063_IM_CHP_PUB_MARAPR2... page 9

file a patent for his radio wave communication. From Poole, he conducted experiments, such as a link between a lighthouse and a lightship in Kent. In 1899, travelling from the USA back to England, he sent a radio signal to a hotel on the mainland. Advances continued until, in 1902, a wireless message was received from Canada. In 1903, the US President was able to greet King Edward VII across the Atlantic. Marconi’s system is thought to have been important in summoning help for the sinking Titanic in 1912. And, just as the great pioneers of computing science could not have foreseen that their work would culminate in Fortnite and Facebook, Marconi would surely glow with pride if he could but see one episode of Celebrity Wife Swap, the pinnacle of the human endeavour that grew from the work of a boy in an attic with a butler (and maybe some whiskey).

University challenge of digs and tuition Recently it has become more widely accepted that university isn’t the only route to satisfying and rewarding employment. Apprenticeships and vocational training are among the other paths available; and there are many instances of success in business by those who entered a workplace direct from school and worked their way to the top. Equality of opportunity may still have some way to go but increasing numbers of able youngsters from what are classified as deprived areas of the UK are now applying for university places. The 2019 figures from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service state that: “In England, the number of young people applying from the most deprived areas has increased 6% to 38,770. In Scotland, young applicants from the most deprived areas have grown by 3%. In Wales, applicants from the most deprived areas remained at 1,390”.1 As for the situation across the spectrum, it was revealed that 39.5% of 18-year-olds in England made a UCAS application, a new record. In Northern Ireland the rate was 46.9%, Scotland 32.7% (not including Scottish further education college undergraduate applications) and Wales 32.9%.

Helping out with costs - With accommodation costs and tuition fees to be met by most students (assistance may be granted in some cases UK-wide and for eligible students from Scotland), planning ahead for university costs makes sense and can be more effective if it involves parents and wider family such as grandparents. The sooner saving for university begins the better. Investing in a Junior ISA every year (2019–20 annual limit £4,368 per child) can produce a useful sum, accessible on reaching 18. We can advise on JISAs and other savings and investment products to enable family members to help with university and life beyond, whilst also providing for their own future needs.

At DGS we take the time to understand our client’s unique planning needs and circumstances, so that we can provide you with the most suitable solutions in the most cost-effective way. LOVE NORTH CHINGFORD Gardening & Litter Picking Groups

A

re you tired of seeing all the rubbish around Rangers Road? Would you like to see a few more plants and flowers around? In short, would you like to live in a cleaner and brighter Chingford? If the answer is yes, then read on! We are a small group of Chingford residents who feel exactly that and have decided to do something about it. We are sub-groups of the main Love North Chingford Group set up in the spring of 2018, to champion our wonderful area. The first Litter Pick was for The Great British Spring Clean on the 11th of May 2018 and since then we have held at least ten more Litter Pick events, predominantly around The Green, The Station and along Rangers Road. The Rangers Road area is particularly bad because, for some reason, many motorists decide that the best thing to do with their rubbish is to throw it out of the car window! Why anyone would want to spoil such a beautiful area is anyone’s guess. In early 2019 CleanUpUk supplied us with all the tools needed (pickers, hoops, gloves, HiViz vests

16

etc.) so we are pretty organised now. Luckily, when litter picking with the volunteers you see the good side of people. We particularly like to encourage children to join us. One youngster called Chiara enjoyed it so much when her parents took her along to a Litter Pick that she decided she wanted to have a “Litter Picking Party” for her birthday. It was a great success and the Council sent her a card and a “gold” litter picker! As a group we decided that we didn’t just want a tidier Chingford, but we also felt a bit more colour would be nice, starting with the planters in Station Road, which looked pretty shabby at the time. The council repainted them in November 2018 and provided some bulbs. Funding was found for some plants and olive trees and the planters were planted up. Sadly, two weeks later some of the olive trees were stolen and rubbish is continually dumped in the planters. But we don’t give up. New trees were planted and we remove rubbish when we spot it. The Gardening sub-group met formally for the first time in March 2019 to decide what work we could realistically tackle. Since then, we do monthly gardening sessions (or more if needed) and we meet every two months to discuss progress and plan ahead. A small grant has been received from the council, who also supplied some plants for free as part of the Spring Clean in 2019. The Council also encouraged us to enter the ‘London in Bloom’ competition, in the ‘It’s your Neighbourhood’ category and we were awarded a Level 1 certificate ‘Establishing’. We hope to do better this June! We have also had donations of bulbs from, amongst others, Homebase and the Metropolitan Public Gardens Assoc in association with Taylor’s Bulbs. One of the main tasks has been the clearing and tidying of the beds in Kings Road, which were in a very sorry and unloved state, with unkempt shrubs, woody roses and full of weeds. We have planted a lot of new drought-tolerant, bee-friendly perennials, which still have a lot of growing to do, but hopefully come the summer,

residents will see a real difference. We have also planted about 1,400 bulbs all around The Green area, in front of the church and in The Ridgeway, near the War Memorial. With a bit of luck, and if the squirrels leave them alone, Chingford should look pretty colourful this spring! Another thing we are involved in is what will hopefully become a “Pocket Park” for toddlers and their parents. It will be in the fenced off area to the right of the Assembly Hall, next to the bike stands. It was completely overgrown and full of rubbish, but after the Council removed some trees, we managed to clean up the mess and tidy the shrubs and are now awaiting the next phase. We are hopeful that in the future it will be a lovely community space. We have a lot more ideas, including planting more bulbs and hopefully even a small wildflower meadow near the church. We are a group of enthusiastic volunteers from all different walks of life with one thing in common - we all want to live in a nicer and brighter environment. You have probably seen us about in our yellow vests! The litter picking and gardening sessions are March & April 2020

063_IM_CHP_PUB_MARAPR2... page 17

really enjoyable and we have a couple of great bakers amongst us, so most sessions end with a slice of cake on The Green. At the moment there are about a dozen of us regularly involved in the gardening and we have about fifteen or so dedicated litter pickers, but we need more people if we want to make a real difference. So, if you think you would like to get involved in your community, make North Chingford a more pleasant place to live and you have a bit of spare time, then why not come and join us? There is no need to be an experienced gardener as there will be plenty of guidance. The bimonthly gardening meetings are held locally, there is a bar and it is very friendly and informal. Come along - we would love to see you! Ms Joke Koopman

CHINGFORD CHORISTERS AWARDED SILVER ‘BISHOPS’ CHORISTER AWARD’

Director of Music, Mike Emerson (left) and the Bishop of Chelmsford (right) with the newly awarded Bishops’ Choristers from Chingford Parish Church.

E

ight children who sing with the Parish Church Choir at Chingford have been awarded the Silver Bishops’ Chorister Award by the Royal School of Church Music. The children have demonstrated a very high level of musical knowledge and commitment to choral singing and the presentations were made at Brentwood Cathedral by the Bishop of Chelmsford, Stephen Cottrell and the Bishop of Brentwood, Alan Williams.

Of the sixteen children who achieved the Award in the Diocese, half of them were from the Chingford Parish Church Choir, who are a wellestablished cathedral standard church choir, with a very high reputation nationally and internationally, having sung at cathedrals all over the world. 24

The boys’ choir rehearse twice a week and the girls’ choir rehearse weekly, and involvement with the group helps youngsters to develop musicality as well as provides many opportunities for singing in prestigious locations such as St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and York Minster. Director of Music, Mike Emerson, said: “I am extremely proud of what these young members of the Chingford Parish Church Choir have achieved and am delighted that so many of them have achieved this exceptional standard. Their success reflects the very high level of singing in our choir and their commitment to our strong choral tradition at Chingford.” Bishop of Chelmsford, Stephen Cottrell, who will soon be taking up the post of Archbishop of York, said: “The English choral tradition is one of the great treasures of our nation and the skill, dedication and commitment of the young people who sing week by week and even day by day in

our choirs is something worth celebrating. The choir are currently recruiting boys and girls and are particularly looking for boys who are aged 7 - 10 to join at this time. No former musical training is necessary. For more information speak to Mike Emerson on 020 8529 6092.
