Inside
Magazine, Chingford and Highams Park

Welcome to the January/February edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park.

I recently invested in an i-pad. This is a device used by many people for looking at things on the internet. The internet is a network of information and social pages. Turns out, you can read the news on the internet on an i-pad – which, I felt, partly justified my rash purchase.

In a rush of enthusiasm, I showed my new toy to a teenage niece. “Look!” I said, clumsily thudding the fragile screen with a thumb. “It’s got the news on it and everything.”

She looked at me much in that certain way. It was the way that I had once looked at my parents when they proudly announced “Look what we’ve got, son – they’re calling it the ‘saucepan’, and it can cook things until they’re ready to eat.”

They were far more excited by the advent of our saucepan than I was. To them, here was something state-of-the-art, and new, and Ours. To me, it was just a thing that every household already had. Such is progress, alas. Whenever a new gadget bursts into our lives, it starts at once its descent into decrepitude. I’ll not even mention my SatNav when I next see my niece.

Then conversely, some true relic can reappear. Later on that day my niece showed me her latest purchase with pride. It was a record-player.

- THE LETTER THORN

or Yis, Yat and ye Oyer

Ye Olde this. Ye Olde that. It’s a quick and easy tip for making something sound enchanting. If I say that I’m off to the pub, it makes me sound like just a regular guy. On the other hand, if I say that I’m off to Ye Olde Tavern, I paint myself as some colourful character full of charm and a certain quirky insouciance. This is pretty much what I was going for.

Incidentally, if you’re a dull so-and-so who could use a little help in sprucing up your personality, I find that it makes you terribly interesting if you say ‘tis’ and ‘twas’ instead of ‘it is’ and ‘it was’. Also, saying ‘yea, verily’ makes you sound really cool. And, if you want to seem truly fascinating, try saying ‘well met, hale fellow’. That one’s an absolute winner.

But I digress. I had meant to explain the history of Ye Olde stuff.

Now I’m writing this on my laptop, right? Just normal, right? But if I’m writing this on Ye Olde Computer... aren’t I suddenly interesting and individual and distinctive? Right?

I remember, as a child on holiday, passing a shop, somewhere by the sea, sometime in the 1960s. It was called Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe. I was lured in. What could lie in such an Olde Shoppe? Surely here was something special and new. Well, it turned out to be full of cheap plastic toys and some rather unpromising pretend quills. But I did not care. This was no ordinary shop. This was Ye Shoppe, and I was in it, transported across the doormat to a world of ancient charm.

I bought a quill. It didn’t work. I put this down to the quill belonging to another world, Ye Olde Worlde perhaps, where it probably worked really welle.

Undeterred, I continued through my life adding glamour to my dull vocabulary by dubbing

everything as being Ye Olde This or Ye Olde That. I wanted to call this publication Ye Olde Inside magazine but the owners told me that this sounded like a geriatric prisoner’s notebook. Disillusioned by this snub, I looked into the subject. Why did earlier people say Ye instead of The? I mean, what was wrong with them? Did they think that they were in a cheap period drama for Ye Television?

In fact, they didn’t say Ye at all. They said The. Just like us. Except that they maybe had quills that worked. So why this misapprehension?

In 1200 or so, the sound th was represented in writing by the letter ‘thorn’ which looked like a ‘p’ where the round bit had slipped down its flagpole a bit. This was fine as long as you were writing by hand. (Extensive research by yours truly reveals that Microsoft hadn’t invented Word in 1200.) (You’re welcome.)

During the 14th century, the letter ‘thorn’ decreased in its use, as more and more people wrote ‘th’. At the same time, ‘thorn’ was written less accurately, with the top of the flagpole disappearing, and ‘thorn’ became indistinguishable from ‘p’.

The invention of the printing press changed this.

8 January & February 2023 Inside Magazine, Chingford and Highams Park

The type blocks that the English used had to be imported from the continent, where the letter ‘thorn’ was not used. Much as, during my unsatisfactory DIY, I’ll use Sellotape to seal a leak because I can’t be bothered buying duct tape, so our early English printers invented a quick bodge. With no ‘thorn’ available, they used a ‘y’. Thus (or yus) ‘the’ was printed as ‘ye’. In later years, certain hilarious wags thought that they could sound funny by saying Ye Olde This or Ye Olde That. Alas, this brilliant gag is based in untruth. But who would ever let the truth get in the way of a good joke? Certainly not Ye Editor of Ye Olde Inside magazine.
