elcome to the May/June edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park. Since the tragic loss of Trevor the tortoise (and we still haven’t heard from the tractor driver) I’ve come to realise that every moment is precious. And chance conspired to prove this to me the other day. Someone pulled out in front of me, causing me to miss the green light by seconds, landing me behind a bus that cost me minutes, meaning that I lost that last parking space and spent half an hour looking for a spot, meaning that I got to the newsagent much later than I’d hoped, causing me to buy a lottery ticket which DID NOT WIN. Had that car not pulled out in front of me, I would almost certainly have won the jackpot. And what would I do with the millions? I’d give that driver a refresher course, then I’d buy a new tortoise. Time, you see, is money. And now I’m late for the bus, thanks to you. Let’s just say you owe me a million quid.

HELM CRAG
or Food pills, Fairies and Fireball XL5 ABOVE: HELM CRAG FROM THE PATH
STORY and IMAGES: DAVID YOUNG
W
hen I was young, in the 1950s, the whole world was actually black and white, except for some very gawdy bits around the Hollywood area. Our best indication of how the future might pan out could be gleaned from the puppet show Fireball XL5. So complete was my obsession that I asked to be called Steve Zodiac. (I still do, but somehow it hasn’t taken.) One thing for sure that the future would hold was the food pill, all your nutrition in one turquoise capsule, relieving humankind of the arduous task of eating a Sunday roast or drinking a posh latte.
THE VIEW ACROSS TO EASEDALE 8
Well, this didn’t come to pass. Fortunately. The nearest that we came, it turns out, was the condensation of great literature down to a few bullet points, relieving humankind of the arduous task of turning all of those pages and reading all of those words that Charles Dickens wrote. Unfortunately. Nevertheless, there are occasions where a little bit of editing comes in handy. (You’re telling me, mate – Ed.) One such occasion is the arduous task of climbing hills. To experience the full majesty of the Himalayas, for example, it is necessary to fly quite a long way. (Our travel department assure me of this.) It is also necessary to get quite puffed. (Our sports guys tell me this.) Yet there is one cute little mountain in Cumbria that squeezes every experience of grown-up climbing into a pleasant morning out, by country lanes into a forest, past waterfalls to a grassy ledge, by rocky paths to a plateau and finally, by a scramble, onto a peak. Everything in a mountaineering expedition has been thoughtfully repackaged for consumers in the form of Helm Crag. This is a fairy-tale mountain which arches gracefully behind Grasmere. This is a fairy-tale village which consists primarily of a church and a gingerbread shop. This, without actually wearing wings and waving wands, is about as fairy-tale as it gets. Helm Crag also goes by the popular name ‘The Lion and the Lamb’ because of the appearance of some pinnacles on the summit, when seen from the east. The rocks look like a lion and a lamb, you see. When

A BRAVE PIONEER AT THE SUMMIT seen from the north, the same random spiky rocks look like Random Spiky Things, but this would not have been such an enchanting nickname. Helm Crag is 1329 feet high. This is less than 2,000 feet. (Our maths department assures me that this is so.) To some, this means that Helm Crag is not a mountain. To these pedants I say “pshaw”, which is rather rude, but, frankly, if something feels like a mountain, and looks like a mountain, and gets you a bit puffed, then it’s a mountain. So come with me, dear reader, and we’ll conquer the peak together. The classic walkers’ route starts from the village of Grasmere and leads through fields of lambs (not lions) with the brow of Helm Crag as a backdrop, either alluring or forbidding, depending on one’s fitness. A rough lane leads up between dry-stone walls and slowly climbs, leaving the valley below until views begin to open up to south and west. After a particularly complicated gate, the path reaches open grassy ground and winds its way upwards, curving around beneath the summit. Soon the view becomes extensive, looking across to Easedale Tarn, a bowl of water sheltering beneath loftier crags than ours, its waters spilling out into Sourmilk Gill which tumbles down into Grasmere below. To the east, the huge ridge of the Fairfield range fills the horizon, a classic horseshoe walk. To the north, the jagged peaks of Blencathra tower above Keswick. And to the south, as the Lake May & June 2019

District fades away, the lakes of Grasmere and Windermere glisten in sun (about twice a year) and the scenery flattens out towards the coast. Dear reader, we’ve covered but a mile and a half, yet we’re high amidst the spiky rocks, the Lion and the Lamb. It’s not Everest. It’s not even Snowdon. But it’s kind of cool (literally) and we’ve tasted all the things that bigger peaks hold in store, condensed into a convenient bite-size stroll. Finally, if all of this is still too much, then I recommend Gummers How, 1054 feet, which Wainwright called an ‘old man’s mountain’. Old women are also allowed onto its slopes in these enlightened days.

HOW TO SIDE-STEP RETIREMENT REMORSE The good news is that most pensioners thoroughly enjoy the freedom that retirement brings. They can pursue their hobbies, take more holidays and spend more time with their family and friends. When people have regrets, it’s often to do with the way they planned for their retirement and the decisions they did or didn’t take about their finances whilst there was still time. Plan early Many people reach retirement and wish they’d put more into their pension plan in their peak earning years. Keeping a regular eye on how much you’re saving towards your pension will ensure that you know how much you’re likely to have when you retire and give you the chance to increase your contributions if you can afford to. Getting a state pension forecast is important too; many people overestimate how much their state pension will be worth and aren’t sure at what age they will receive it. A recent report from Aviva1 warns that millions of workers risk sleepwalking their way to a pension
May & June 2019
053_IM_CHP_PUB_MAYJUN2... page 13
that will, in effect, be less than the minimum wage at retirement. Don’t let this happen to you. Take advice Not getting appropriate advice is often highlighted as a regret by those people who feel they made poor financial choices when they retired. People retiring today can expect to have several decades of active life ahead of them. Making sure that their funds don’t run out too soon can often be a major concern. Getting good financial advice can help ensure that you have a plan in place that meets your likely pattern of expenditure and keep funds in reserve in case you need to pay for nursing or residential care. The sooner you start your pension, the longer your money will have to grow. If you’re selfemployed, an employee, work part-time, run your own business or have accumulated pension pots with past employers, we can offer you the advice you need. If you haven’t looked at your pension plan recently, then please contact Jeff Bradley or Chris Haigh, on 0208 524 8521, to arrange a review. 1Aviva,

Gillwell Park
Scouts, skills and a century of change
I
’m standing outside The White House in the shadow of a huge conifer and in front of an immaculate lawn. But this isn’t Washington DC – it’s Gilwell Park, on the edge of Epping Forest. Something of a hidden gem, Gilwell Park is a 108 acre woodland estate with some spectacular views across London and a truly unique history. For 100 years it has served as the global home of Scouting and this year celebrates a centenary of fun, adventure and skills for Life. As such, it’s a place of pilgrimage for Scouts everywhere.
In some ways, wandering around the grounds is like travelling the world. Between the wooded glades, and beneath the Gilwell Oak (Tree of the Year 2018 no less) you’ll find beautiful sculptures and statues gifted by Scout organisations from every continent, each with their own tale of global friendship. But this isn’t just for Scouts. Today it’s proud to welcome people from across the UK – from couples to corporates looking for a magical setting for a day with a difference. The Scouts made Gilwell their home in 1919, as the world reeled from the aftermath of the First World War. UK Scouting was recovering from the loss of over 5,000 older Scouts and adult
Gilwell Park today volunteers, which created a need to train and develop new leaders and ensure the future of the movement. At that point it had 218,000 members in the UK. The ideal opportunity arose when a benefactor, William de Bois Maclaren, generously offered to buy a camping area for inner city London Scouts who lacked access to suitable grounds. After several months of searching, Gilwell Park was found and purchased for £7,000. The size of the estate (roughly half its current size) meant it would be a perfect camping ground for Scouts and training centre for their leaders. On 17 April 1919, the first Rover Scouts arrived to find the site dilapidated and started the restoration process. By 12 May, the first Scouts

Gilwell Park: a beautiful wedding venue. Also perfect for birthday parties, celebration of life and baby showers were camping on site and making the most of Gilwell’s amazing location. By September the first training course, the Wood Badge began and soon attracted participants from around the world. Since 1919 Gilwell Park has grown and evolved to meet the needs of the Movement but its core ethos of delivering skills for life remains the same. Gilwell Park today – a truly unique venue Today Gilwell Park welcomes over 60,000 young people a year offering them adventure, opportunities and the chance to develop skills for life. The centre still welcomes groups from all over the world and is open to Scouts, schools, Guides and many other youth groups but it has evolved so much over its history. There are now five accommodation lodges on site, one of which is home to our team of 50 international volunteers. There are over 30 on-site activities from archery and climbing to Jacob’s ladder and the 3G Swing. There is also a comfortable, fully licensed hotel with 40 bedrooms and an event centre; a beautiful wedding venue it’s also perfect for birthday parties, celebration of life and baby showers. An invitation Throughout 2019, Scouts from around the world are helping us celebrate our centenary. As part of Skills for Life today
this we will be raising much needed funds to support the development of the first official UK Scouts Museum at Gilwell Park. We’d love for you to join in and there are lots of ways you can: For the adventurous, why not be part of The Great Step Forward? Hike 25 miles through Epping Forest and help support our next 100 years. The circular walk ends up at Gilwell Park with a celebratory barbecue. www.scouts.org.uk/greatstepforward For the heritage lovers – if you would like to visit Gilwell Park and find out more about its fascinating history come and complete the Heritage Trail. We have a family trail challenge and adult guide to lead you around the site visiting some of its most iconic locations. The trail is free of charge, we just ask for a small donation to support the ongoing work of the Heritage Collection. heritage.scouts.org.uk You can also visit our exhibition, Scouts, skills and a century of change: the untold story of Gilwell Park at Epping Forest District Museum, Waltham Abbey, Saturday 10 August to Saturday 12 October. For 100 years Scouts from around the world have travelled to Epping Forest to learn new skills, make friends and enjoy its beautiful landscape. Discover how Gilwell Park has become renown across the globe as the spiritual home of Scouting. Donate – if you can’t make it to any of our events but would like to support our plans to develop a Scouting Museum at Gilwell Park please do so here: fundraising.scouts.org.uk Scouts If you would like to find out more about Scout Groups in your area please visit scouts.org.uk

and what’s on... series of obstacles along the way. Alongside the Junior Warrior Race will be Teens Unite’s notorious It’s a Knockout event; where teams will compete on the inflatable assault course. Participants should look forward to giant inflatables, hysterical games, oversized props, water and gallons of foam, as they work together in a bid to be crowned Loughton’s winning team for 2019. Gather your friends, family, colleagues or sports team to be a part of the It’s a Knockout competition. You don’t have to participate to be a part of the action. Spectators are invited to come and watch the antics and enjoy a selection of stalls, games, attractions and BBQ. Teens Unite, established in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, opened a second office in Loughton in September 2018. Founded 12 years ago by Karen Millen OBE and Debbie Pezzani, the charity supports young people who have been diagnosed with cancer.
