elcome to the March/April edition of Inside Magazine (previously the West Essex Directory), the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill. I like spring. I know that I may at times have given the impression that I’m a curmudgeonly so-and-so who delights in the cold bleak darkness of winter. But spring is special. Not only because of the buds that finally force their way through the frozen soil. Not merely because daylight increases and forces back dark night. Not because the warmth returns to the air, a fresh warmth, as though the winter has given it a chance to clean itself up. Not because of the fluffly creatures getting born left right and centre. No. It’s more than that. For spring is when I get to buy a ludicrous number of annual bedding plants, mismatched and impractical. Full of the hope that spring inspires with its soft breezes and blossom, I see in my head a sort of mini-Kew where the present empty flower beds lie. Colours will blaze forth with heady perfumes. Butterflies will flock to my garden. Well, that’s the plan. Generally, the petunias get eaten by slugs and the marigolds just seem to get bored. It all comes to nothing yet again. Which is why I like winter after all. Expect nothing and you won’t be disappointed.

he coach trip from the airport was not, I have to say, promising. Our introduction to the island of Crete came through a glitchy mike from a travel rep who was just so-o-o-o happy. We weren’t. Having managed no sleep either on the floor of the airport or in the tiny space called an airplane seat, one was in no mood either for the glitch mike or the happy rep. Worse yet, she pronounced the island’s name in its Greek form, to rhyme with pretty which caused my mind to compose several rude limericks involving the words city, pretty and – well – I’ll leave the punchline to you.

Crete is about 150 miles long and only 20 miles thin, on average, and is the largest Greek island. It is also where European civilization began, with the Minoans, almost 5,000 years ago. At its heart are mountains of 8,000 feet, separated by lush green valleys and rugged gorges. The Minoan civilization occurred roughly concurrently with our Bronze Age, at about 27001450BC. It takes its name from the legendary King ASKYFOU

Minos, whose claim to fame was his labyrinth. This was constructed for him by Daedalus, who did such a good job that he could barely get out himself once it was complete. It was to house, at its core, the Minotaur, half man and half bull. Theseus, in the myth, slew the beast. There is a vast archaeological site at Knossos (Minos was supposed to have ruled from here). It was only discovered in 1878. It had been abandoned since 1100BC, at which time it had a population of around 18,000. Even on a bright day, of which there are many, the richly restored colours, the ruins, the remains and the relics all seem to harbour ghosts of a forgotten era, long before the Romans came. We have images in our heads of most eras in history, the Roman centurion, a pharaoh or two, a smattering of English Kings. But the Minoan era remains largely unknown. The countryside of Crete is dotted with those churches that make such good postcards, sprouting from

meadows and rocks like elaborate orchids against the Mediterranean sky. Between these, and between the mountains, lie fields and olive groves. Working donkeys lurk in the long grass. Villages sit on top of rises or on valley floors with cafes serving the thick, sweet black coffee. The rep on the coach probably told us all of this and more. I wasn’t listening. I’d come up with another clever rhyme. We were nearing Rethymnon, which rhymes with absolutely nothing, but it was where we were to stay. It’s a large town by the sea, but at its heart is an old Venetian harbour lined with cafes of pastel colours with fishing boats bobbing on the water. Rethymnon retains much of its early architecture in old palaces that merge with the high street, their stone staircases wedged between groceries and bars. Beyond in one direction is a castle and on the other side a beach. Take your pick. The fortress is Venetian and offers views over the town. The beach, on the other hand, is decorated with coloured sun loungers and matching parasols arranged with mathematical precision on the sand, as though sunbathers need regimentation, a neatly ordered space in which to fry. Me, I’m high on the hill in the fortress, the sea breeze in my flowing locks as I look down, in every sense, on the legions below. Education shines a lighter that is brighter than the sun. Although it was actually very breezy, so we legged it down to March & April 2015

the beach pretty quick. Then, in an act of defiance, put a blue towel down amidst an area of pink parasols. Just to make it clear that we were different. Crete provides a bit of everything for everybody. You can stroll through meadows and ramble along gorges, climb to a peak and relax on a beach. There is history and heritage, art and culture, and food and wine. There are also donkeys and travel reps. How do you tell them apart? One makes a hideous braying sound and nods its head aimlessly. The other is a beast of burden. I never did finish the limerick.

FROM CELEBRITY JUNGLE TO HAVEN HOUSE GARDEN H

aven House patron and Loughton-based actress Vicki Michelle MBE has opened a new sensory garden in the grounds of the hospice. Vicki, who recently took part in ITV1’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, cut the ribbon to officially open the new outdoor space.

The garden, which is wheelchair VICKI MICHELLE MBE, CUTS THE RIBBON ON THE NEW SENSORY accessible and designed to appeal to GARDEN WITH CHILDREN, FAMILIES & STAFF IN ATTENDANCE all five senses, will be a dedicated outside space for Haven House The garden will also provide a haven for local children, families and staff to enjoy. It is hoped wildlife; plants have been chosen to attract bees, that it will be of particular benefit to families who butterflies and other insects and later in the year are using the hospice’s accommodation facility it will even have a bee meadow and insect house. during end-of-life and post-bereavement care. Engineering firm, Laing O’ Rourke with project partner, Crossrail, funded and built the space, with design input from hospice staff, in what was previously an unused part of the grounds. Many other companies gave their time and gifts in kind to help to fund the project. Speaking about the opening; Vicki Michelle explained; ‘As a patron of Haven House, I was so pleased to be asked to open the sensory garden; it really is a wonderful, tranquil space for local children and families to enjoy.’ Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of the Woodford Green hospice added ‘The sensory garden is a brilliant example of the holistic care we offer; Haven House is not just about clinical services, it’s also about providing a warm, welcoming and therapeutic space for local life-limited children and families.’ He continues: ‘A big thank you to Laing O’ Rourke, the volunteers who helped with the build and those companies who supported the project.’ VICKI MICHELLE WITH FUNDERS (L-R) TROY EASTHOPE (CROSSRAIL), STEVE JONES & IAIN KILLINGBECK (LAING O’ROURKE) 10
