as that a long, cold winter or what?! But never mind, the snow is gone and SPRING is finally here! You know what that means - it’s time for sprucing up your living spaces, both inside and outside. At the 16th annual Durango Home & Ranch Show, you’ll find loads of ideas for freshening up your home. More than 100 vendors are here to show you the newest products and services on the market, many of them leaner and greener than what you may currently have, so you’ll save money and resources as you upgrade your home. Building Specialties Store is our show co-sponsor, and has a wonderful display of energy-efficient Hurd Windows in the Exhibit Hall. Photographer Claude Steelman is our featured artist this year, and has loaned us his beautiful photo, “Hummingbird on Columbine,” for our show poster and event guide cover. Visit his booth, Wildshots, in the middle of the Extension Building. Norton’s Catering is serving up breakfast and lunch fare in the Extension Building and in the dining area of the Exhibit Hall, so have a bite to eat while you enjoy the show. (Be sure to check out the colorful house banners and spinners on the ceiling, courtesy of For The Birds.) Our gate proceeds benefit the Community Foundation serving SW Colorado, so your $1 admission fee will go to a local agency doing very good work. So come on out and enjoy the show - it’s sure to lift your spirits and give you inspiration for some new Spring projects of your own.

ur featured cover artist for the 2010 Home & Ranch Show magazine is Claude Steelman, a celebrated photographer and videographer who has spent the past 25 years documenting the wildlife, landscapes and cultures of much of the world. Mr. Steelman's love for the outdoors led him to a career in nature photography. He has traveled from the Arctic to the Central American rainforest capturing the beauty of nature on film. His images have been featured in hundreds of publications worldwide, and three of his photographs appear on the tails of Frontier Airlines planes. His cinematography has also been featured in wildlife documentaries for The Discovery Channel, PBS and The National Geographic Channel. he Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado appreciates the opportunity to partner with The Durango Herald and the annual Durango Home & Ranch Show to bring you new, innovative ideas in philanthropy and home improvement. The most recent contribution by the Community Foundation has been providing relief for employees and owners of the businesses destroyed or damaged by the recent Main Avenue fire. We provided an opportunity for the public to make a tax deductible donation to the 700 Main Avenue Relief Fund which has been immensely helpful to over 40 employees, owners, neighbors and one firefighter. During the past few years the Foundation has grown from having a few thousand dollars in funds to almost $2,000,000 in managed assets. There are over 24 organization funds and more than a dozen family funds. In addition, there are eight fiscal sponsorships, which assist organizations in developing into independent

non-profit organizations. In addition to managing a variety of funds, the Foundation has also made grants totaling over $80,000 to over 30 organizations in the nine years of its existence. Making a difference in our five-county community through philanthropic leadership, convening community leaders to explore potential solutions to community problems, and identifying community assets are all included in the mission of the Community Foundation. We hope you enjoy the 2010 Durango Home & Ranch Show and want to thank The Durango Herald and the community for the tremendous support showered on the Foundation. We would like to be your philanthropic partner as you plan your community gifts. Thank you for the opportunity! FOR GOOD, FOREVER! Lon Erwin Executive Director

About Chuck Norton:

N

orton's Catering Company was created in 1989 by chef Chuck Norton. A native of New Orleans, Chef Norton creates flavors from a variety of food styles such as Cajun, Italian, Mexican and Southwestern. Along the way, Chuck was co-creator and owner of restaurants in Hammond, LA; Aspen, CO; Telluride, CO; Ouray, CO and Durango. After settling in Durango, his reputation for excellent food and service quickly established Norton's Catering as one of the premier caterers in the area. With his highly-trained staff, Norton's Catering has become a logical choice for nearly any conceivable event, including corporate events and weddings. Serving 400 or more is not uncommon for Chuck and his team. Since the opening early last year, The Appe-Tasting Room has been a rousing success. Collaborating with long-time associate Art Ferraro, a culinary master in his own right, Chuck features sumptuous appetizer versions of his already famously fine foods. With an excellent wine list, it's all served in a laid-back style, embracing the warm and hearty style that bespeaks Chuck's southern roots. The Appe-Tasting Room, at 955 State Highway 3 in Durango, is open Wednesday through Friday from 4-7 p.m. Chuck's tantalizing menu changes week-to-week, so visit www.nortons- catering.com frequently to review his current selections.

f all the energy options under discussion these days, natural gas continues to be one of the most cost-effective and reliable sources of clean energy. And since there is no such thing as "clean coal," natural gas is the natural choice. Why is this true? Along with reducing your energy costs, you'll be helping to protect Earth's ozone layer by reducing carbon emissions in the atmosphere. So natural gas is not only easier on your budget, it's easier on the environment, as well. As distributors of natural gas, Atmos Energy is committed to improving energy efficiency in the home or business. Most older heating systems and appliances waste energy while driving your utility bills unnecessarily higher. But you can do something about it today. Start by replacing old appliances with newer, Energy Star-rated appliances, and heating and cooling systems. And in some cases, you can even get federal tax credits and state rebates. For more information on rebates and tax credits, go to our web site at www.atmosenergy.com/efficiency. Drop by Booth 23 to find out about how you can be more energy efficient while saving money and the planet.

here is a better alternative to snow shovels. Ice and snow can not only damage your property, its removal can be a dangerous activity, especially for the elderly. Though the winter snows are nearly gone for this season, there will always be another winter with buildups of ice and snow on your roof, steps, sidewalk, walkway and driveway. But you can protect your home or business with a call to Colorado Ice Melt Systems. They sell and install the latest technology designed to reduce the chances of damage to your property and the potential of personal injury from falling ice and snow removal. You may even increase the value of your home by installing one of their systems. For more details on how to protect you, your home or business, visit Booth 54.

want to leave the car at home for short trips about town. Depending on local traffic laws, you can ride the Segway on sidewalks or along the bike lanes. Or, better yet, if you're a golfer, the Segway is an excellent alternative to the usual golf cart for the single golfer. It takes up less space, is easier to maneuver and will not cause the damage to a golf course associated with the larger golf carts. A Segway may be ideal for some disabled adults needing a convenient way to take charge of their transportation needs as, with a little coaching, a Segway is easy to ride. Easier to ride than you might think and it goes where most scooters fear to tread.

Compact and nimble with its ecologically small footprint, a 24-mile range on a single battery charge and the trends toward electric vehicles for the future, the Segway can make perfect sense for those who

s this the "new economy" or the "current economy?" The jury is still out on that question. For Kogan Builders, one of Durango's premier design/build homebuilders, there has been a renewed emphasis in remodeling existing homes as families decide to upgrade rather than sell. Whether it's a new kitchen, bath, family room or new bedrooms for an expanding family, Alix Kogan has always focused on designing what works for the client. That means maintaining craftsmanship of the highest order while providing the client with real value in the process. The Kogan team offers completely integrated solutions with a thorough analysis of the client's needs, including site selection and positioning, energy efficiency (including passive solar design) and, of course, always respecting the client's budget each step of the way. Thanks to the relationships Kogan has developed with experienced and talented trades people over the past 10 years, it's little wonder the Kogan team continues to exceed client expectations on every job. But then, at Kogan Builders, these concepts are not goals. They're the standard.

s you enter the 2010 Durango Home & Ranch Show, you may pass an interesting display in the form of a playhouse. The idea was conceived by Mantell-Hecathorn as a whimsical, yet educational, tool to demonstrate specific materials and building science techniques that builders and homeowners can implement in residential construction. Although a simple playhouse won't be able to demonstrate all of the materials or techniques often incorporated into a green built home, M-H hopes that this playhouse will help the public learn about some of the principles of sustainable building science with the proven financial savings of an energy-efficient home. As a valuable lesson in sustainable construction and living, this playhouse will be donated to the community. Possible homes for the playhouse are either a public location such as the Discovery Museum or a childcare facility. Mantell-Hecathorn’s Playhouse Photo courtesy Mantell-Hecathorn

ith the intention of working on Wall Street with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration, Pat Nargi realized that he needed to build something besides piles of paper on a desk at the American Stock Exchange. A job in construction wound up being the perfect fit in 1991 which was ironic since his grandfather and great-uncle made their livings from construction. With the pride he has in the projects he's built, he's never looked back. His success has come through attention to detail, caring for people and building relationships. Clearly, Pat Nargi understands how to build his brand. Philosophically, Nargi finds that he enjoys working in a "4-stage" construction process. First would be the conceptual stage. "Are we fully capturing what the lot has to offer?" Second is the wall

framing when the character of the building is evident and 'the plan' becomes real. The third stage is the finish stage and the thrill of working with a team of talented finishing carpenters, cabinet installers, countertop installers, appliance installers, plumbers, electricians, painters, tile setters, carpet layers, and landscapers. Fourth is the stage every customer loves: the final walk-thru and handing over of the keys. In recent years, Nargi has designed and built the highest priced home to sell on the open market in Dalton Ranch. The latest project was The Willows Townhomes. He has also maintained his connection with the community coaching basketball for seven years for Durango High School and St. Columba.

uilding Specialties Store is marking its 25th anniversary this year. Owner Steve Osborne's success and survival, despite a series of national recessions, speak volumes to a very sound business paradigm. His secret isn't really a secret at all. First, he has built his company balancing a long-range strategic focus with tactical flexibility for short-term adjustments. Second, maintaining his sales and service for high-end energy efficient windows, doors and garage doors means his customers will be repeat customers. For 2010, Osborne continues to work the future rather than dwell on the past. For instance, on February 18, Solar Works, a wellestablished solar consulting firm, as well as distributor and installer of several top brands in solar equipment, moved into the Building Specialties showroom. Osborne notes that this was a great decision to expand and integrate solar products into the current product lines of energy efficient doors, windows and garage doors. The on-site presence of Solar Works dovetails perfectly with Osborne's commitment to local building contractors by offering top-of-the-line green building products with unequaled customer service. And to celebrate the 25th anniversary for Building Specialties, Osborne is using the Home & Ranch Show to launch an expansive inventory reduction sale with more than $100,000 worth of energy-efficient products already in stock and ready for installa-
