My love for cycling has been a lifelong journey. The seeds of this passion were sown when I began racing BMX at the age of seven in my home town of Kingston, NY. As I progressed through high school, mount ain biking captured my hear t, ultima t ely guiding me t o Dur ango, where I pur sued my aspira tion t o become a top professional cyclist.

In 1996, I became a professional cyclist, a voyage that would span numerous decades. Throughout my career, I secured fif teen national championships, garnered various continental championships, stood atop multiple world cup podiums, and represented my countr y in three appearances at the Olympics.

Ballantine Communications Inc. uses reasonable effort to include accurate and up-to-date information for its special magazine publications. However, all information comes from a variety of sources and may change at any time for any reason. To verify specific information, refer to the organization or business noted. To view the online version of this guide, visit: www.durangoherald.com

The City of Durango Open Spaces that are home to these trail systems include Overend Mountain Park, Horse Gulch, Dalla Mountain Park, Oxbow Park & Preserve, Twin Buttes, Three Springs and Chapman Hill.

Durango's natural surface trails are open to multiuse recreation and offer opportunities for mountain biking, hiking, trail running, dog walking, crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing, and simply enjoying nature.

Respect the trail and respect other users. Stay on designated trails. Stay off natural surface trails that are wet or muddy. Avoid creating braided or social trails. Be courteous to other trail users and recognize their experience as well as yours.

For more detailed information on trails located on City lands, including elevation gains and trail profiles, you can visit an interactive map at cityofdurango.maps.arcgis.com.

For questions about Durango's trails and open space areas, or to learn about hosting events or activities on these trail systems, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at (970) 375-7321

Ballantine Communications works directly with representatives of the City of Durango, the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service to provide an annual update to community trails. Durango Trails constructs and maintains these trails, and the organization also works closely with the same local agencies to negotiate access and plan trail connections. Hundreds of trail users and volunteers contribute to education, trail maintenance and conditions reporting.

• Respect all trail closures, and obtain proper permits for state and federal lands.

• Use established trails. Don’t blaze your own path. If you encounter mud or water, walk through it, not around, to prevent trail widening and preserve fragile vegetation.

• If you pack it in, please pack it out. Don’t trash the trails.

• Yield to other trail users, especially those traveling uphill. Slow down, establish communication and pass one another safely.

• Keep dogs on a leash in city limits. Pets may only be off-leash, but under voice control in Durango’s dog parks and the San Juan National Forest.

• Be friendly! These trails can connect our community in more ways than one.
