Team Dudley Sport Newsletter Issue 6 – June 2011

A Round up of 2010 / 2011 season “Outstanding learning which develops skills, raises aspirations and changes lives” is now the synonymous strapline for Dudley College. Sport provides many of the students with the opportunity to represent the College in playing, officiating and volunteering capacities. Sport brings together talented individuals regardless of many factors including background and educational levels, allowing our students to develop teamwork, discipline, and many other individual traits. Many of our students have played their part in another sporting season and will hopefully choose to represent the College in Olympic Year or continue playing sport wherever they go on next. The sports development programme has continued to develop with new success in both team and individual sports. This review is the final recognition and celebration of a good year across a variety of sports. Notably the ladies football team winning the BCS West Midlands Central League. Our U18 Men‟s football team lifted the County Schools trophy for the first time in College history. The netball squad have made significant strides as have the cricket team as well as our Athletics and Cross Country teams picking up a host of honours this academic year.

Dudley College nominated for National Awards Dudley College has been nominated and shortlisted for two very prestigious National Awards. British Colleges of Sport (BCS) have recognised the outstanding and innovative work being done at the College in terms of its Football Development Programme and the Volunteering and Leadership Academy. The Football Development Programme achieved Focus College Status last July and the coaching staff have been working hard to develop the programme further including the development of Team Dudley FC to allow players a pathway into senior football. BCS have seen this as fantastic practice and believe it is a unique project that supports player development beyond College and helps to reduce players dropping out of the game at 18 & 19 years of age. This has seen Dudley College shortlisted for Focus College of the Year. Sports Development Manager, Simon King is delighted that BCS have recognised twelve months of hard work. “Setting up Team Dudley FC has not been easy and staff and players have worked tirelessly to ensure we have a club structure that will serve players well for forthcoming years. I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone involved in helping us establish the Football Club. Our thanks also go to BCS and Birmingham County FA for their continued support. Whether we pick the award up or not is irrelevant it is just great to be nominated.”

Dudley Student Ross Ensor is in line to win the BCS „Young Volunteer of the Year‟. This is a National Award as Ross has been recognised for all of his hard work in coaching different groups of children as well as completing charity events. As well as completing his NVQ Football Coaching studies Ross has found time to complete well over 100 hours of volunteering in schools, at College and in the Community as well as officiate junior football at the weekends and watch his beloved West Bromwich Albion. FESCo Rob Elkin is delighted that Ross has been recognised nationally for his hard work. “Ross is a lovely, kind hearted lad. He is extremely popular with staff and fellow students because of his willingness to put himself out and help others. He is always first to ask if anything is needed to be done or if he can assist in any way and he never asks for anything in return and is always very appreciative for any rewards he is given. He is an absolute credit to Dudley College.”
