Team Dudley Sport Newsletter Issue 2 – January 2011

Team Dudley – Sport for the next generation Happy New Year to everyone and let’s hope 2011 brings some better weather and allows us to start playing our fixtures. December was a total washout all over the country and meant that some of our teams did not play for 6 weeks with a mixture of snow, ice and Christmas holidays. 2011 looks to be an exciting year for Team Dudley as the College teams and individual athletes go on the search for glory in their chosen sports. With over 120 students competing in sport every week it is a hectic time for both staff and students alike at Dudley College.

Football programme produces England stars Dudley College Students Tyree Clarke (18) and Lyndsey Glover (17) have both been selected to represent the England Colleges football teams. After impressing selectors at an intensive weekend long trial at Lilleshall both players now have an opportunity to gain International honours over the coming months. Tyree is studying as a gym instructor whilst playing football for Stafford Rangers. “I am delighted to have been selected for the National team. The standard of players in college football is really good and after the disappointment of not being offered a professional contract at Norwich this has really given me a boost.” Lyndsey who studies BTEC Sports Coaching has become the first ever female international from Dudley College. This news comes on the back of last year’s England Colleges star Chris Knight. Chris has been training full time and is on trial with Conference club Kidderminster Harriers. Head of football Stewart Holmes believes both players have the ability and right attitude to go on further with their football and sports careers. “What Tyree and Lindsey have achieved is remarkable and testament to both the players and the opportunities being provided by Dudley College.”

Football coaches off to work NVQ Football students are all set for work experience next month. Having completed their FA Level 1, first aid and child protection courses the 24 students are now set to work across the Dudley Borough in a host of schools and football clubs. Each student is required to plan and deliver coaching sessions at local Primary schools in order to complete their NVQ qualification. The idea is that students get a real life working experience that will help them gain employment at a later stage. FESCo Rob Elkin and NVQ football tutor Stewart Holmes have been busy organising placements. Stewart has seen the value of this type of programme over the past few years. “We have ex students working at professional clubs, community and schools programmes, Dudley College and some are now running their own junior clubs. All of them have been through this valuable process. Those students that really excel will be taken on to our apprenticeship programme next year where they will become employed coaches.”

Apprentices given exciting new opportunities Dudley College students are celebrating gaining successful employment in to various fitness centres and football coaching schemes. The students pictured below are now in paid employment but studying a Personal Training Diploma at college at the same time. Manager of Pulse Fitness in Wednesbury Richard Smith, has been delighted with his two recruits. “I contacted Dudley College to enquire if they ran sports apprenticeships. Within 2 weeks we have employed Rachel and Ryan who have really impressed with their knowledge and level of professionalism.”

Disability Awareness day Dudley College Young Ambassadors and leaders organised and run a variety of activities for Disability awareness day on the 7th December. Blind football, new age curling and adapted versions of volleyball and boccia were played by students and staff of the college as well as wheelchair basketball Rob Elkin (Fesco) worked with the students to ensure the day ran smoothly. “The group did really well and ensured a fun packed day of activities. The event was not only a great chance for students to show their leadership skills but it also helped them develop a better understanding of challenges that disabled people are faced with and overcome in their sporting lives. The blind football proved a real hit with everyone and we have Birmingham FA to thank for helping provide equipment.
