By Ed Blum Makeovers Salon + Spa in Easton, Mass

t wasn’t all work and no play for Ed Blum of Makeovers Salon + Spa (of Easton, Mass., USA) during exclusive preview events leading up to 2015 Milan Fashion Week. This is where world-famous designers launch their latest collections. A highlight: Blum was selected to join the L’Oreal World Tour as a Black Elite team member for L’Oreal Professionnel (#tourwithlp). He could not have done it without the support of his business partner and wife, Norah Blum, as well as his immeasurably talented staff at Makeovers.

Upon his return to Boston on Sunday (9/28), Blum said, “What an amazing opportunity! You can actually feel the edgy fashion and style vibes from my Milan photos. I can’t wait to translate these newest trends and techniques for our clients. I don’t want to give away any secrets, but I was mesmerized by a lighter look makeup trend called Glo, and wavy bobs / dark brow / soft eye lid / strong liners /deep lip makeup by Urban Decay. Stay tuned.”

The show is called ‘Spring/Summer 2016’ but Blum, as is his style, plans to be ahead of the curve on what’s going to be hot. He observed many daring hairstyles, from soft and sleek sophistication to edge with geometric designs and color. Designers emphasized stripes, multicolor, animal prints, floral, polka dots, and delicate lace paired with faux fur. At these events, Blum, who’s been in the salon business for 38 years, can always be found wherever the fashion action is. He says this Milan trip was especially exciting , being in the company of so many legends: L’Oreal Professional’s world-famous stylist Laurent Decreton; Christine Smith of L’Oreal; and John Costanza, General Manager of L’Oreal Professionnel USA (“a pleasure to work with – and he never goes on world tours!”); Gloria Saponaro, corporate event planner; and Justine Berger, education manager

for L’Oreal Professionnel’s SoHo Academy. Models at the L’Oreal Studio wore outfits inspired by the late legendary designer Alexander McQueen. Blum worked with the French Hairstylist hampion Laurent Decreton who works with McQueen’s collection. Decreton is L’Oreal Hairstyling Ambassador and Artistic Director at Haute Coiffure Francoise. Besides Decreton, Blum worked with many other international designers. Others with whom Blum hobnobbed included stylists at Armani, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Urban Decay, among other household names of the fashion world. “I was greatly inspired by the collection of Jean Paul Gaultier,” Blum noted. Norah Blum, co-owner of Makeovers Salon + Spa, said, “I love seeing Ed get inspired, especially at such

a high fashion level that L’Oreal Professionnel brings. Sharing that knowledge and energy with our staff means we can continue to style our clients with the best the world has to offer.” Kerry Martino Pickett, a manager at Makeovers Salon + Spa said, “We can’t wait to see the inspired technique that Ed brings back for Makeovers’ clients.” Ed Blum’s Milan activities were featured this past week in international fashion and style publications Beauty Launchpad and 360 Magazine. A

s a makeup artist, I am often asked to create a “no makeup look” for talent on a photo shoot. This translates into having the model or talent look like they have no makeup on, but are “camera ready”…which is important because a face is three-dimensional while a photo is two dimensional. If the features are not defined, the face can literally fall flat on camera. whether you are looking for a “no makeup look” for photos, to minimize your time getting ready in the morning, to camouflage flaws, or to look natural yet polished, this look is pretty simple to achieve.

With a makeup sponge or cotton swab, apply concealer that matches your skin tone under the eyes working up to the inner bridge of the nose. Dab concealer on blemishes and any discolorations. Apply taupe shadow control cream all over the eye area… lash to brow and side to side… to even out the skin tone around the eyes. Next comes the foundation. Using a makeup sponge, stipple liquid foundation over the entire face. Buff any excess with a clean area of the sponge. Blend the under-eye concealer. Lightly contour the face with a bronzing powder to give the face some definition. Under the cheekbones, sides of the nose, and under the jawline are the prime areas. Using a makeup brush, dust powder all over the face to set the foundation and concealer. To finish the look, fill in the brows and apply mascara and lip gloss!

TALENT TALKS

KATYA KOUPTSOVA Her Life, Her Time

By Jaclyn Pelopida | Photos and video by Valencio | Music & Lyrics by Katya Kouptsova Makeup by Sinnarith Vann | Hair by Danielle Dube

I

t only seems fitting that Katya Kouptsova is the cover model for our October issue since her favorite time of year is autumn. “I love autumn. My birthday, my daughter’s and my father’s birthday is in October. I love the cool crisp air, pumpkin-flavored everything and the smell of leaves. Fashion during the fall is the best in my opinion because you don’t have to wear a heavy winter coat to cover it up and can play with different styles of clothing from boots, to sweaters, hats and scarves,” said Kouptsova.

Something you normally don’t hear in the modeling world? A model’s love for food. “I LOVE FOOD!” said Kouptsova. As a self-proclaimed foodie Kouptsova, knows the importance of a balanced-life between food and exercise. “I have to control my portion sizes and make sure I eat healthy on the regular basis. I don’t always have the opportunity to make it to the gym so I try to maintain my weight through healthy eating and plenty of water,” said Kouptsova. TS: “Where did you grow up?” KK: “I was born in Siberia, Russia. I lived in Ukraine until the age of nine. I moved to North Carolina in 1995 and then moved to Plainville, Massachusetts a couple of years later. I finished my middle school and high school years in Seekonk, Mass., so you could say I grew up in a few different places.” TS: “What was your first modeling/acting experience like?” KK: “My first independent photo shoot was very awkward. I wasn’t sure how to pose or how to stand. I lacked confidence and it clearly showed in the photos as I look back on it now. The photographer was very understanding and knew I was just starting out.” TS: “What has been your biggest challenge as a model/actor?” KK: “My biggest challenge would probably be food. I LOVE FOOD! As a model you should stay in shape throughout the year in case a client is interested in booking you, not just the beginning of spring while working on the beach body. It’s especially tough around the holidays. I can easily gain weight but I can easily lose weight as well. I have hyperthyroidism so my body craves food every two hours because of my high metabolism.” TS: “As a model/actor/actress, do you ever feel extremely stressed and overwhelmed? How do you overcome that?” KK: “Modeling is not always easy but it is always fun. Sometimes holding a certain pose can be difficult and time consuming or walking around in heels for hours for a runway show. When it does get overwhelming, I like to relax and get a full body massage at least once a month.” TS: “What would you do with your first million if you made it big as a model/actor?”

KK: “With my first million I would buy my parents a house, establish a business to build an investment for my daughter’s future and buy my dream car, a white Cadillac Escalade. I would also like to open up a Starbucks franchise and a whiskey distillery. TS: “What is the biggest piece of advice you have for other up and coming models/actors out there?” KK: “I would say to be confident in who you are and not take anything personal. Sometimes clients do not choose you for a job, not because they don’t like you but because it’s not the ‘look’ they are looking for. Try to be versatile in many different aspects of modeling like photo shoots, runway, or speaking to strangers while doing promotional work. Clients want to see that you are comfortable in your own skin and can do various things.” TS: “What is your favorite drink and why?” KK: “Woodford Reserve Whiskey with a splash of ginger ale and a lime. Whiskey is high in anti-oxidants and only has a few calories. It also decreases blood clots, increases good cholesterol and it contains no fat. So a night out on the town for a model with only a few calories to spare means I don’t need a cheat day for this whiskey.” TS: Who is your favorite singer or band? KK:Russian Roulette! oh wait, that’s me! More of a spoken word/ hip hop type of music. It sounds like a poem with hip hop rhythm and beat to it. Not all my pieces follow the traditional hook and verse pattern, it has its own lane and style. Most of my work focuses on real life experiences that happened and some just focus on lyrical punch lines. It was a hobby for me a few years ago but once modeling became more successful for me I decided to put more focus on pursuing that. www.soundcloud.com/russian_roulette TS: “What type of coffee do you prefer?” KK: “I prefer Starbucks, but realistically I can afford Brewed Awakenings, which is my favorite coffee. I treat myself to Starbucks at least once a month.” Kouptsova has two big fears in life, one of which, she has proudly overcome. A fear that Kouptsova had when she first moved to America was learning a different language aside from Russian. Koupstova’s ultimate fear is “waking up and hearing on the news that there is a shortage of coffee beans. If I don’t have a

“If I don’t have a satisfactory cup of coffee in the morning, people may want to avoid me until tomorrow.”

“I have to have a watch on. I feel like I lost something and my left wrist feels empty if I do not have a watch on; a must before leaving the house.

satisfactory cup of coffee in the morning, people may want to avoid me until tomorrow,” she said. Aside from coffee, Kouptsova is also a really big fan of jeans, especially what they do for her behind. “I have this particular pair of jeans that make my ‘tookus’ look fabulous! I don’t have much of a behind to begin with so when I slip on my favorite jeans, I feel like a million bucks,” she said. TS: “If we bumped into you walking down the street on any given day, what would we traditionally see you wearing?” KK: “Most always a pair of heels, stilettos, or high heel boots. I would have plenty of accessories to match. My hair would most likely be straight. Depending on the season I will have a hat to match my attire. Make-up would be photo shoot ready because you know never know who you could run into. I believe Cindy Crawford was discovered at the age of 16 while detasseling corn. A local newspaper photographer noticed her working close by and took a picture of her, and the rest is history.” TS: “What is your go to beauty product or fashion accessory/item?” KK: “I have to have a watch on. I feel like I lost something and my left wrist feels empty if I do not have a watch on; a must before leaving the house.” TS: “What do you enjoy doing in your down time?” KK: “I have very little down time. Working a full-time job and taking care of an 8-year-old after work can be time consuming. On the weekends, if I don’t have any modeling jobs, I like to spend time with my friends. I love traveling and taking vacations. Sometimes I will spoil myself with a quick weekend getaway for some mental rehab.” TS: “If you could pick someone famous to be for a day, who would you choose?” KK: “I would pick to be Gisele Bundchen. It would be interesting to get a taste of what it’s like to be a full-time model. To wake up knowing you go to work and you love what you do. Having access to makeup artists and hair stylist at your disposal would feel amazing. Traveling the world and being a part of the most significant events known in the modeling industry would phenomenal.”

TS: “What’s your biggest turn off?” KK: “A person that doesn’t have basic manners of please, thank you, excuse me and sorry; improper dinner etiquette and table manners.” TS: “Share your favorite quote with us.” KK: “’3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. 4 Instead, it should be that of your inner self,2 the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.3 1 Peter 3:3-4.’ I like this quote because in the modeling industry you can easily get caught up in looks and outward appearances and so it reminds me to stay humble. A person can be beautiful on the outside and looks will eventually fade but being beautiful on the inside will last you until your last breath

“Fashion during the fall is the best in my opinion because you don’t have to wear a heavy winter coat to cover it up and can play with different styles of clothing from boots, to sweaters, hats and scarves...”

FROM THE INSIDE OUT

Solve Everyday Problems By Dressing As Your Favorite Superhero! By Lynell Masterson

H

alloween can be a fun time to put on your costume and be whoever we want. We have full permission to act a certain way and really step into a role that is naughty, playful or adventurous. What if I told you, that by dressing up, you could actually solve some of your everyday dilemmas? Wouldn’t that be great! Well then, let’s get started. Halloween, known for the parties, sugar laden treats has cultural stems honoring many traditions, none of which I am going to discuss. Yet, it is interesting and worth a google search if you are curious. My reference is about the simple idea of using our westernized custom of wearing a costume, as a jumping board for making some big transitions in your life. I mean using archetypes to answer some hard questions that may be presenting in your life. Archetypes are symbolic figures that denote or project a shared meaning crossculturally and are socially defined. According to the Merriam- Webster Dictionary, an archetype is a collectively- inherited idea. The 10 Most Common Archetypes and Their Qualities Are: The Hero: Courageous Acts The Caregiver: Protection & Care for Others The Explorer: Freedom & Exploration The Rebel: Revolution or Revenge The Lover: Intimacy & Experience The Creator: Artistic Talent

The Jester: Comedic Way The Sage: Use of Intelligence & Knowledge Magician: Understanding of the Laws of the Universe The Ruler: Wielding Power

Dressing up as Superman or Florence Nightingale, on designated occasions, are great ways to tap into your inner wishes and desires. Using these symbols as a way of learning what you admire or long for in your life can help guide you to what you need more of and value. Ironically, Halloween comes at a seasonal time when we start to go within and slow down. The trees begin to bare and we begin to get ready for the winter. It is a time for us to prepare and be ready for the time ahead. This time of year is the perfect backdrop to help you look within and find some answers and have fun! What better time than to express our deepest desires, in the safety of a custom that supports the zaniest ways of looking and behaving. As a matter of fact, you will probably win a prize if you go all out and exaggerate yourself on this evening. Here’s an easy step by step guide to show you how to solve your problems with your Halloween costume. Note, skipping a step means it may not be affective so follow them in order for best results. 1. Pick your costume/ idea first. Go with whatever comes to mind, as you regularly do. 2. Plan your clothing, makeup etc. Buy or make your costume, and go about your regular Halloween routine. 3.Here’s where you can add a little juiciness to your experience. Once you have determined what you are wearing, ask yourself these questions: - Describe the 5 most important characteristics of this costume - What qualities of this character do I admire? - What quality of this archetype do I need to call in, to help me with the problems I am having now? 4. Now write down your answers. Remember, this is supposed to be fun and creative so do this when you can be of a light heart and mind. Once you have written down the questions and answers, you will be able to access this information and use it when challenging times come up. Another trick or shall I say treat, that you can do for yourself is to take a look back at past costumes you chose and ask yourself; “What attributes did I need from that character the year I wore that costume?” You may be surprised at the answers you come up with. This is a coaching skill I teach many of my clients because we all the ability to solve our own problems and generate our own answers. Sometimes looking at a character that we dress up as can help us find those answers that feel hidden. It takes the pressure off of ourselves and allows for creativity and flow. Have fun with this and your dressing up. Take stock in knowing that you always have all the answers you need and they will come in the most surprising ways! If there is any way I can help, please email me, I’ve got lots of tricks AND treats for you to learn about being the best you possible. With loving thoughts.

A WINK FROM‌Italy

Reality shows in Italy By Cinzia Antonelli

I

n Italy, as in the rest of the world, the phenomenon of reality TV has become increasingly rampant since 2000. At that time, our national television company imported foreign formats, and also produced their own, starring both regular people and famous ones, the so-called VIP.

In the past 15 years, many other reality shows have appeared on our TV screens, varying in content - from talent shows, aimed at the discovery and development of all types of talent; culinary, artistic, managerial, sports or in the world of fashion, to shows about ordinary people living their daily lives in and out of a house. After attracting an all age range audience with different interests reality TV was born in Italy.

“Big brother” was the first reality show that I saw here in Italy.

If we want to get away from our hectic and stressful everyday life, all we need to do is escape to the “Island of the famous.” It’s a beautiful and wild desert island, where a group of competitors from around the world function like real survivors. Competitors are forced to overcome all the difficulties that a wild place has to offer, without the aid of any comfort.

Suddenly we all stopped to watch something we’d never seen on TV before: an apartment occupied by 10 people being recorded all day, under the watchful eye of a hidden camera, showing their everyday life, or course with some limitations.

Contestants build shelters, make fire and find food, in addition to the minimum ration of rice they have available daily. Of course the winner will be the castaway who will brilliantly pass all the physical obstacles that the program requires.

If feeling nostalgic about the good old days, life without progress, we can go to the “Farm”, which is another reality show set in the 1800’s. In “Farm” a group of competitors abandoned the usual comfortable of everyday life to live just like we lived in those times. If you are sick of your beautiful and intimate home, you can always move in one set up in the Cinecittà Studios, where the popular show “Big Brother” is recorded. There you are bugged 24 hours a day, so forget your dear privacy. Haven’t found your soul mate? Don’t worry! You should participate in the reality show “Men and Women”, the television program created and produced by Maria De Filippi. In every season of the program men and woman so-called “tronista” (person sitting on the throne) look for a life partner. They sit on a throne and are presented different guys or girls so that they may get to know each other. All the various outputs and events outside the TV studios, in various locations, are filmed and aired during the program. At the end of this show that lasts about 9 months, the “tronista” will choose this partner for life. Reality show “Over the throne” was created for the more mature crowd. Participants are groups of men and women 40 and older, who are looking for a new love. The program is closely followed because it is fun and often exciting when matching couples. If you are an adventurous traveler, you should join the cast of “Beijing Express”, where a dozen couples compete over a distance of almost 6,300 miles (Km 10.000) to reach a definite goal. They don’t have much with them, only a backpack, a euro a day, and can’t pay any public transportation or accommodations. Those who manage to reach the goal by overcoming all the obstacles, in the shortest time wins. The show is currently taking place in South America through Peru, Ecuador and Brazil. If we want to test our present romantic relationship, we must be able to survive the set of “Temptation Island”. It is six weeks, with six unmarried and without children couples, confined to a touristic village on an island and tempted by twelve other men and single women. In the end after reviewing footage from their significant others, either engaging in other new rela-

tionships or preserving the current one as a decision to continue or end is presented. For those who like dreaming and realizing dreams, must absolutely rely on the talent shows much followed in Italy. One of the most followed is “Friends” a truly all-embracing school, involving a class of 20 students aged 18 to 25, who aspire to become jazz and classical singers, dancers and actors. After attending all classes, they perform within a true show in their respectful roles and voted by viewers. A jury of experts then decides the winner. Last season’s winner an excellent band called “The Kolors”, has climbed all Italian music charts. Other talent shows are successful “The X factor” and The Voice”, to which all those who dream of success in the music world can participate. Some of our big Italian pop stars were winners, the talented Marco Mengoni, Noemi and Giusy Ferreri. Completely changing the subject and content with “The Mouth”, we do not lose any episode of Master Chef Italy”, where a dozen aspiring cooks prepare their best dishes, under the careful and strict judgment of three famous Italian chefs, including the most popular Carlo Cracco.

The success of all these reality shows have been often accompanied by numerous negative criticism. The reality shows such as “Big Brother”, show us a reality contrived rather than real and natural lives we lead every day. People in search of notoriety, forced to live in an unfamiliar environment, know that being in front of the camera may show sides of their character which may not be true. It sends the wrong message, especially to young people looking for their own identity. Like a well-known Italian showman Renzo Arbore once said, “You command in your life until you are clutching your remote control”. I think that it would be good for us to turn on our brightest minds as an alternative to TV! Ciao…from Italy. Cinzia Antonelli.

THE BUZZ

Nick Jonas Flies Solo for First Time By Jaclyn Pelopida

I

t’s been over two years since the infamous Jonas Brothers band unexpectedly split, leaving many fans heartbroken and wondering if the three brothers, Kevin, Joe and Nick would no longer be in the spotlight. Although the three brothers have all gone their separate ways, but still support each other’s paths, Nick Jonas has continued to make a household name for himself. From acting gigs like this season’s newest hit TV show, “Scream Queens,” to dating rumors about exfling Selena Gomez, Jonas’s main claim to fame is still his incredible voice.

Along with “Levels,” Jonas also sang two new songs from his upcoming sophomore album, which will drop either late this year or early next year. “Area code,” a gritty, R&B song, which references Selena Gomez’s hit “Good For You,” had the girls screaming and wondering if the song was in fact written for Gomez. Another new, up-tempo dance track, “Under You,” was full of sexual innuendos, and Jonas said would be a duet with a famous pop star on his new album. He also made sure to acknowledge his Disney roots, as he sang snippets of old songs from his Jonas Brothers and “Camp Rock” years, to which the crowd of girls screamed louder. For songs such as the Jonas Brothers classic, “Who I Am,” Jonas reminded everyone that he isn’t just a singer, but can also play multiple versions of the guitar.

For the first time in his career, Jonas performed solo on stage at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Sept. 11. Opening act Bebe Rexha, known for writing and singing hit songs such as, “Monster,” “Hey Mama,” and “Take Me Home,” rocked the crowd early on with her killer vocals and head-bouncing, pop-rock music. Although the crowd was noticeable younger, with most of the demographic being around 14-years-old, Rexha did not hold back any expletives during her performance, which reminded everyone that both she and Jonas were no longer kids. As the lights went down and the crowd of screaming, pre-pubescent girls went crazy, Nick Jonas appeared from a door that magically opened from within the screen backdrop. Singing his No.1 hit, “Chains,” in a leather jacket, tight red pants and dark sunglasses, Jonas instantly owned the word “swag.” After the hit song was over, Jonas slid right into his newest song, “Levels,” an up-tempo and highly-falsetto song that is currently all over the radio. With dance moves similar to those of Justin Bieber’s, it’s clear to anyone that

The screen backdrop played an important part in Jonas’ concert as they gave each song an artistic value and you could physically see the lyrics coming to life on stage. One song in particular, “Wilderness,” is an ode to sex and how being naked is a freeing experience. While Jonas crooned the sexy lyrics, the screens showed animals, literally in the wilderness, performing sexual acts; something that was easy to pick up on as an adult, but not so easy to pick up on as a pre-pubescent teen. “Push,” was one of the most visually-heavy songs as Jonas sang behind a screen that was lit up to just show him and blacked out his band. With a song that has haunting vocals and vulnerable lyrics about a relationship holding him down under water, it seemed fitting that the screens, in combination with the lighting, made it look like Jonas was physically underwater as he swooshed around in the ocean that was displayed on the screens. Much like “Levels,” another up-tempo dance song with heavy beats and bass off of Jonas’ debut record is “Teacher,” a song about teaching someone how to love and flirt. While Jonas performed this song, he stopped mid-way through and began to sing covers of other songs such as the summer smash, “Can’t Feel My Face,” by The Weekend. After covering The Weekend’s latest hit, Jonas went right into another cover of one of Outkast’s famous songs, “Roses.”

His next cover, surprised the audience entirely as this drummer began to beat out “Poison” by Bell Biv Devoe. At 26 years old, my friend and I stood up dancing and singing to the classic song, while the majority of the audience, primarily made up of 14 year olds, sat down trying to figure out what song Jonas was singing. I sat next to three, 13 year old girls who asked me if this was a new Nick Jonas song. Talk about feeling old, right? Closing out the show with his first solo hit single, “Jealous,” the crowd screamed and sang so loudly, you couldn’t even hear Jonas sing. I don’t think he could hear himself singing either as he turned the mic towards the crowd to have them sing the chorus, which we all did, word for word. With his great looks, dance moves, high falsetto and definite “swag,” going solo was the best bet for Nick Jonas. And if his song lyrics tell us one thing for sure, it’s that he’s no longer a Disney boy wearing a purity ring.

10 Minutes is Better Than No Minutes! By Elizabeth Phinney

W

ith an expertise in Fitness after Forty Five, I have come to understand and to physically know that 10 minutes of exercise doesn’t really do much of anything except make you feel like you did something, that day, for your body. And, that is a good feeling, both for yourself and for your body!! Simply depending on 10 minute workouts will not get you in shape, nor will it help your muscles get too much stronger. To really build muscle tissue in such a short period of time, you need pretty

heavy weights and heavy weights always lead to injury eventually. Keeping a body that has a few more years running in a healthy condition has as much to do with discipline as it does to do with giving back. In other words, exercise and keeping in shape should be focused on giving back to your body as much as what you are doing for your body. Giving back to your body with a good exercise program, demonstrates to your body how much you care and how much you are giving back in gratitude for all your body does for you. Think about it: from the moment your feet hit the

floor in getting out of bed until the moment you take them off the floor at night, pretty much everything you do makes demands on the body. Driving in a car, sitting at a desk, walking anywhere, bending over, using your cell phone – think about your day and all the thousands of tasks your body performs, ideally without complaint. And, for all those demands, what does your body demand of you? And, if it is demanding the right foods or the right exercises, are you listening? Are you diligently giving back each day? This 10 minute “workout” is designed to recognize your body’s need to be acknowledged. It is not intend-

ed to be used as a daily workout. Rather, it is a way to show gratitude to your body before the day begins. To tell your body, “ I don’t really have time today to give you the workout that you need, but in place of that I will give you these 10 minutes to focus just on you, in gratitude for all you do for me.”

Reach your right arm straight out in front of you, while at the same time, straighten your left leg behind you. Now, alternate limbs – left arm and right leg. Reach during your exhale and release during your inhale. Repeat 7X each side. When done, do a strong pelvic tilt and round your back like a cat. 80 seconds + 30 second

Do alternating knee lifts: bend your outside knee, keeping your foot directly under your knee, getting the thigh parallel to the floor, then release. For your breathing, lift the knee up on your exhale and release it on your inhale. Then repeat using the other leg. Repeat 10X each leg. – 60 seconds 16) Turn facing the stationary object – again using it for balance if you need it and place your hands on your hips. Make sure your thighs are in the same plane, knees together. Bend the right knee on your exhale and lower it on your inhale. Switch to left leg. Keep alternating – 10X each leg. 60 seconds 17) Stand still with your feet together, hands in prayer position on your chest and bow your head. Give thanks to your body for all that it does for you each and every second of every minute of every day. 30 seconds

Halloween Costumes When is too little ok???? By Rachel Silva

H

alloween is fast approaching. For adults who dress up and attend Halloween parties many people ponder over that burning question. What on earth am I going to wear to this thing????? You think about it, obsess about it, look up the hottest trends on line and scour through the multitude of homemade costumes on Pinterest.

The good news is that this is the one day a year when people can come out of their “comfort zones”, defying the traditional societal norms of what is deemed “normal” This is the one day to express yourself in whatever way you want because its socially acceptable to be outlandish for this one day a year. If the party is an adult party only and you generally know and are comfortable with the people in attendance, then go ahead and honor your sexy. If a costume makes you feel good then exercise your right to wear it, but always remember that CONFIDENCE is key. However, this question is multi-faceted in many ways. For example, where is this Halloween costume going to be worn? If the venue is work related, you will definitely want to tone that costume down so that it is acceptable and appropriate for work. Are you meeting a significant others family for the first time? Then no, you shouldn’t wear that sexy cat woman costume. Just remember this idiom.. there is a time and a place for everything. If you have reservations about your costume, then let that phrase be your voice of reason.

HOT; What’s NOT

What’s

W

By Natasha Malone

hat’s hot right now in kid’s fashion for the fall season? What’s not hot? Here’s head to toe with what’s hot and what’s not.

Most girls that carry a purse, carry Vera Bradley and the brand has nice floral designs. Vera Bradley also makes lunch boxes and backpacks. Drawstring sports bags are very hot and trendy for both boys and girls (for carrying their books and gym clothes in). Button up bags are also in style, but can be a pain to close some times. Leggings, tight jeans, and yoga pants are what most of the girls are wearing now. Baggy cotton pants that come in at the ankles are cute and very comfy. Starting from the top with what’s hot, stretchy elastic headbands and beanie hats for girls are cute and stylish. For boys, flat topped hats or gel in their hair. If you’re still wearing sunglasses in the fall, the cutest ones right now have a flat frame on top. It’s the same for boys, though they prefer the color to be all black. Alex and Ani bracelets are in style and simple earrings for girls. Boy’s jewelry style (if they wear jewelry) is a simple gold chain, diamond earrings, and friendship bracelets. Girls’ infinity scarves work will with a light North Face jacket which are good for both looking nice and for keeping you slightly warmer in the fall season. For girls, Western style tops and plaid shirts are pretty, the long-sleeved ones are warmer, and you can roll up the cuffs for a nicer look. Shirts with lace on the back are also very fashionable. Indian patterns on shirts are nice and it gives a bohemian look. Pink brand is also popular for shirts. Lifeguard hoodies are also popular for girls and helps when you don’t know what to wear, you can just throw them on. Boys right now are more into athletic wear. The hottest brands right now are Nike and Under Armor. Hoodies with well-known brand logos on them are also in style. Boys who like to dress a bit nicer might wear a button-down shirt.

Boys mainly wear gym shorts or jeans (that style hasn’t changed recently). Some boys wear sweat pants or baggy jeans. For most girls (including myself) the shoes are the most important. I guess you could say the same for boys, though. The top styles for girls are combat boots, Uggs, Vans, Sperry’s, tall riding boots, and moccasins. Girl’s white Converse shoes with a red line around the bottom are the latest fad. Boys like customized extremely expensive running shoes. Popular brands right now are Nike Jordans and Roshe Runs, Under Armor, and that’s mainly all they wear for shoes. Now, for what’s not hot for girls… Visors, big floppy sun hats, super sparkly headbands with flowers on them aren’t huge in style. Boys are able to wear any style of hat, though the curved baseball cap hats are a little out of style and flat top hats are in. Turtlenecks aren’t trendy or hot anymore. Darker colors are in style this year while bright neon colors are out. Anything with sparkle designs, cheesy logos, or jokes, boy don’t find particularly appealing. Loose, baggy, or flared pants aren’t fashionable for

girls, but boys can probably get away with any style for pants. Long socks aren’t for girls (they can be too warm) while the opposite holds true for boys. Twinkle Toe sneakers and crocs are no longer trendy, but are comfortable outside of school. Rain boots are functional and effective, but are not worn as much in school because they are too clunky. Sandals, Sketchers, or any type of shoe with Velcro is not in for boys.
