Makeup Tips

for the 50 +

By Olga Hawwa | Photography & Videography by Valencio Small Model: Melanie Deak

A

s any woman over 50 can attest, the body undergoes a lot of changes as we age... and the skin is no exception.

Over 50 skin can experience lines, wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, increased sensitivity, dryness, and sagginess due to factors which include sun exposure, lifestyle habits, and biological changes such as menopause, as the skin changes, so should our skin care routine.

The same goes for makeup. What worked for us in our twenties can now add years to our faces. Instead of looking younger, we can look like we are “trying too hard” to hold onto our youth.

Soften your eyeliner. An easy way to do this is to apply your eyeliner first. Smudge with an eyeliner brush, and then apply eyeshadow. This will give the eyes a smoky appearance without the harsh lines.

Below are some makeup tips for a polished and beautiful over 50 face!

Use shimmery eyeshadows sparingly. A little glitz is great, but don’t overdo it. Shimmer shadows can accentuate lines around the eyes.

- Remove excessive facial hair. Hair on the lip line, chin, and “sideburns” cast shadows on the face which can be aging. A lot of my older clients complain of excessive “peach fuzz”. This can be waxed off giving the skin a much smoother surface for your foundation. (*Not all facial skin can be waxed safely. Consult your esthetician before booking a waxing service.) Exfoliate 1-2/week! Exfoliation removes the top layer of dead surface skin cells which will give you a smooth canvas for makeup. Apply primer. Primers help to fill in fine lines, crow’s feet, and pores and also help prevent makeup from settling into lines and wrinkles. - Conceal those flaws. Dab concealer under the eyes, the inner corner of the eye, and on any blemishes and blend and remove excess with a makeup sponge.

Curl those lashes to really open up the eyes. After curling, apply eyelash primer and waterproof mascara to set the curl. Then apply your volumizing and lengthening mascara for a va-va-voom effect! Be sure to remove any clumps with an eyelash comb. Lightly fill in the “bald spots” in the brows to frame the eyes. And while we are on the subject of brows, do get your brows professionally designed and shaped! It is always amazing to me how the right brow shape can really transform a face. After the initial shading, be sure to go for regular touchups every 3-4 weeks. Contour the face lightly for an instant facelift. Apply a slightly darker face powder under the cheekbones, under the jaw line (lightly dusting the “double chin” if you have one), and the sides of the nose.

Avoid heavy foundations. Whether you opt for a cream, liquid, or powder based foundation, a light hand is all that is needed. Diluting your cream or liquid with moisturizer and applying powder foundation with a makeup brush will give you the coverage you need without the “caked on” look. A heavy application can result in makeup collecting and settling into lines, wrinkles, and pores.

Be subtle with your blush. Use blush to add a pop of color to your face. Be sure to blend and set with face powder so the color looks like it is coming from within the skin rather than sitting on top of it.

Lipliner is your friend. Following your natural lip line, apply lipliner and then fill in with the liner. This will help prevent the lipstick from “bleeding” into the fine lines around the mouth. Lightly dust with face powder. Then apply lipcolor with a lipbrush for a softer application.

As we age, less makeup can actually make us look younger! A gentler hand and softer application makes all the difference when it comes to being “50 and Fabulous!”

Opt for lighter lip colors. Just like a black dress can make a body look thinner, a dark lipstick does the same for lips which are already thinning due to age. A lighter color will give the illusion of plumpness and fullness to the lips.

Above all else, invest in regular salon facials and a good skin care program at home to let your natural beauty shine through.

OUT OF THE CLOSET

Rocking the Denim on Denim Look

By Diane Capozzi

W

hen I sat down to write this article, I thought I should take a peek in my very own closet to see all the denim I own. Wow! Let’s just say, I might need Denim Anonymous (DA). To let you know, I was born and raised in Oklahoma. I can’t begin to count the number of reasons why I left… one of them being the fashion sense of a small country town. So, for God’s sake, steer away from the cowboy look! Not sure what I’m referring to? Do not, and I repeat, don’t finish your look with a cowboy hat, cowboy boots or that huge buckle belt that you won at the recent rodeo.

I think we owe a huge thank you to Rihanna for putting the “Denim on Denim” look back on the map. With her cute leather baseball hat, chambray shirt, distress pencil denim skirt and killer, sleek nude pumps, that was casual glam done like a pro!!! My mind started to swirl with the infinite number of styling ideas when you begin to mix the textures and silhouettes of your denim pieces. Think about all the options for different washes, colors and various weights to each piece. There is also so much more beyond just jeans… flared culottes, fitted over-alls, cami dresses, baseball jackets, crop tops (remember Beyoncé’s look?!?!). So let’s start here. The Jeans You have a month of outfits just when you calculate all the different fits, color and washes available, so I had to control myself and choose a few of my favorite options to share. 1. Let’s start with simple, go-to styling. Straight leg or skinny jeans in a dark wash can create such a glam vibe with a light-colored, fitted chambray buttondown, sexy, sleek pumps and structured bag. Note: Pairing different shades of blue create contrast. 2. My personal favorite is flares and they are having a comeback moment! High-rise jeans paired with platform heels will make you look like you got legs for days. Create that 70s vibe with a long-sleeve, high-neck peasant top paired with a black denim jacket. Note: Denim jackets come in array of colors and fit. Think beyond cropped and blue. 3. Newest member in my personal collection is coated denim. It is such a great low cost option to leather, unbelievably slimming and comes in a host of colors. Add an off-the-shoulder sweater, loose denim jacket, ankle boots and hit the road. 4. Two great options to help break up the blue on blue combo are jet black/grey jeans, and unexpected favorite, camo! Jet black jeans & light-colored chambray shirt with ballet flats is such a polished look. While camo jeans with a distressed, graphic t-shirt, shearling denim jacket and combat boots is super edgy.

5. Fan favorite is the boyfriend jean! It’s so versatile, perfect for any body type and super comfy. Don’t be scared to try a pair with rips and heavy distressing through the front of the leg; it adds to the overall vibe. Create a casual day look when you add Adidas Stan Smiths or any colorful street sneaker. Finish the look with a bright colored sweater and denim parka with fur collar. Below the Belt You just doubled the denim on denim options! Most of you have owned or maybe you are still rockin’ your denim mini skirt! Ahhh, but let’s lower the hemline and you’ve created so many options that become office-appropriate, perfect for a date night or after-work event! 1. An A-line midi denim skirt with a lightweight, sleeveless cropped top, espadrilles, silver metal accessories are an easy, low-key day look. 2. Add your dark denim, high-waisted pencil skirt with polished leopard print top, denim blazer, slinky heels, burgundy computer tote and you are ready to head to work. 3. Nail a great date night look with a fun frayed, round neck denim top. Style that with a high-slit, maxi denim skirt, gunmetal hardware belt and overthe-knee boots. The Dress I’m a sucker for all the denim dresses popping up everywhere. It is such an easy, trendy, on-point way to nail denim on denim. You only need to focus on one piece and then have fun with your accessories. Look past the basic shirt or shift denim dress. Take the time to hunt for unique silhouettes, lightweight, flowy, supple chambray to pull off an effortless look. 1. Keep your denim overall dress from looking too Huck Finn by adding a fitted tank, long-sleeved shirt or crop top with moto ankle boots. 2. For a sophisticated look that is great for work or brunch, go for a knee-length, A-line, sleeveless, collared dress with a wrap belt. Complete you look with delicate jewelry, sandals and neutral bag to elevate the look. If the weather is chilly, add a turtleneck and

knee-high boots. 3. Going for a little more edgy vibe? Try a black frayed v-neck sleeveless straight-cut midi dress with front slit. Try leather bracelets and studded chunkyheeled booties making this look perfectly cool 4. A maxi dress with button-down front shows off just enough skin and cinched waist breaks up proportions for a flattering fit. Adding platform sandals elongates the look. 5. The latest version spotted on the street is this contemporary fresh take that’s been reimagined with oversized dolman sleeves, a boxy silhouette featuring a lace-up front. I would add, from my personal closet, platform heels with denim patchwork detail and accessorize the outfit with a camel-colored, fringed crossbody bag that will add to the 70s flair. With limitless options from casual to polished, it will be impossible for you to go wrong. Oh, by the way, my closet count was 32 and growing!

he one phrase that Chanelle Melton constantly hears? “ down!” Melton’s mother would say that to her as she’d noise all around the house. When asked the best way sh herself, Melton said “over the top and always trying to something when I’m bored.”

“I once told my parents that they needed to sign me up to be ica’s Got Talent’ or something and I could have made them m though, maybe one day!” Melton exclaimed. As for Melton’s it’s surprisingly a 90s classic. “My favorite TV show of all ti be Fresh Prince of Bel-air. I can watch the re-runs all day an of the show. TS: “Where did you attend school/college? Do you plan to continue your education?” CM: “I currently attend Bridgewater State University; I am a junior. My major is finance with a management minor. My dream job is to actually retire from the finance world after I get some experience and become a guidance counselor for high school students. I would like to continue my education at Bridgewater State in the graduate counseling program.” TS: “How would your friends describe you?” CM: “My friends would describe me as an outgoing but a talkative person. Someone that makes people laugh and can be very energetic. Someone who works hard but is also lazy; Very goal oriented, friendly and rational.” TS: “How long have you been acting/modeling?” CM: “I haven’t been modeling for that long, just a few years. I actually begged my parents to let me model because I was always into many sports. I wanted to do something very girly and cheerleading was not what I was going to resort to, so they agreed to modeling.”

Models: Christine Luis (C) & Jordan Donahue (R) Outfits courtesy of Lumiere Boutique

“My first modeling job was nerve-racking. I had to walk in front of so many people and all I was around was experienced models who were not scared, they were just excited.

TS: “What made you want to become a model and why?” CM: “I wanted to get into modeling because I felt like I was such a tomboy and no one would expect that from me. I would always watch ‘America’s Next Top Model’ and say I can do that. This is a great way for me to start and to make a portfolio.” TS: “What was your first modeling/acting experience like?” CM: “My first modeling job was nerve-racking. I had to walk in front of so many people and all that surrounded me were experienced models that weren’t scared, they were just excited. The energy of that show was great but I feel like I still could have given the crowd more now that I think about it because I feel like I held back. Today I never hold back because sometimes you only walk down the runway once to show the designer’s clothes and you want to make sure you leave a great first impression.” TS: “What has been your most embarrassing modeling moment?” CM: “The most embarrassing modeling moment I had was almost falling when exiting the runaway. Thank God I caught myself!” TS: “Describe your sense of style and what it says about yourself and your personality.” CM: “My sense of style, I would say ranges depending how I feel on the day. I’m the type of person that people would say that you can’t pull that outfit off and I end up doing it because I don’t care, I know I’m going to make it look good. I range to dressing up edgy with dresses and skirts to wearing boyish clothes because I have tons of sneakers, so I’ll rock the sneakers and ripped jeans look. I think the outfits I wear say a lot about me because I don’t care what people think and I wear whatever makes me feel good.” TS: “What article of clothing do you currently have in your closet that makes you look and feel your best? Why?” CM: “Everything in my closet is a go-to. I wouldn’t put on anything that doesn’t make me feel good. Even sweatpants makes me feel good because they are so comfortable.” TS: “What fashion trends do you like/dislike the most? Why?”

CM: “I love the fashion trend of jean on jean and high-waisted pants or shorts. It reminds me of the 90s fashion, which I do love also. The fashion trend I dislike would probably be wedge sneakers. I just don’t understand that at all.” TS: “What is your go-to beauty product or fashion accessory/item?” CM: “I love wearing hats. Floppy hats, bucket hats, or baseball caps. I think hats can make an outfit 10x better.” TS: “What do you enjoy doing in your down time?” CM: “In my down time I like to shop, hang out with friends and dance!” Growing up as a self-proclaimed tomboy and playing sports all of her life, it’s no wonder that Melton is currently on the Women’s Basketball team at Bridgewater State University. “I love playing basketball. This is my third year on the team and so far we won two MASCAC championships with our team and it is a great feeling all together. We hope for a third and one for my final year but we will see as time comes. I have been playing basketball since I was in third grade. My father has always coached me through the years. I enjoyed that because I got to play basketball with him all the time until I went off to play at a higher level,” Melton said. TS: “What was the best vacation/travel experience?” CM: “The best travel experience I ever had was going to Cape Verde last summer. I went with my basketball team to play in a tournament. We went to the islands Praia and Sal and it was the most beautiful experience. We got to helps kids and give them supplies and food. We also did clinics for them to sharpen their basketball skills. It was honestly a blessing going to see a whole different side of the country.” TS: “Who is your favorite comedian?” CM: “My favorite comedian is hands down, Kevin Hart. He is just too hilarious not to love.” TS: “Do you enjoy or know how to cook? What’s your favorite dish to make?” CM: “I do know how to cook. I don’t really have to because I live on campus at college and I have a meal

plan. My favorite dish is salmon, rice and string beans.” TS: “What’s you favorite type of music?” CM: “I love listening to music. I love R&B the most, rap, oldies and EDM, which is like pop.” TS: “Who is your favorite singer or band?” CM: “My favorite singer would have to be Beyoncé. Her voice is basically gold and she has the dance moves to back it up. I would love to be her but I can’t sing, I can only dance!” TS: “Are you a better singer or dancer?” CM: “I am definitely a better dancer. I like to learn the new dances out and make up dances with my cousins when they come in to town.” TS: “What is your favorite holiday and why?” CM: “My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. I love being around my family. I love the huge feast that they make for dinner. Then, to top it off I love that Black Friday is the next day so that means shopping and sales!” TS: “Share your favorite quote” CM: “One of my favorite quotes is ‘You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,’ which means you can’t succeed unless you try and you have to take action.”

The horseshoe runway at the swanky Providence G was en fuego with collections that spanned decades gone by and yet to come! This season’s designer line-up is guaranteed to suit the fashion tastes from the most modest to those willing to go avant-garde! Here is our re-cap of the week’s events of course including each night’s most stylish gal and guy! Who made the list this year? Read on to see!

DAY ONE COVERED BY LISA SHORR

Evolue Apparel by Susan Zemaitis opens StyleWeek with a peek back into the mod office of the 1960’s! This fleeting glance shifts from “mod” to “modern” as models showcased shift dresses belted with a bold swath of fabric draped over the thighs or extended down a single arm. Flair skirts and peplum jackets in floral fabrics softened the otherwise sexy symmetrical line. Hair was woven into a high bun with soft make-up.

What’s black and white and sprinkled with shine? Jeffrey Dickerson’s latest collection! Satin tops, shiny leggings adorned with sequins, sequin body-con and maxi dresses and more paraded down the runway in a celebration of confidence! Creative intention was not lost on this collection! Exposed front and back zippers gave each look an entrance and an enviable exit! Statement jewelry pieces by Whisper Designs by Shereen, completed each look. Braids randomly cascaded down the models backs in youthful play. This edgy almost Goth line was complimented with dark eyes and black sparkly lips!

Elan Rose’s collection proved that honoring tradition and modesty can also be quite feminine and empowering! Flowing floral long-sleeve maxi dresses and long jackets in colors from beige to black cascaded over the body that appeared to float down the runway in an airy breeze. Headscarves or “hijabs” were adorned with dangling jewels, while the model’s eyes were accented in a traditional cat-eye.

Susan Troy channeled the aesthetics of the 1930’s prairie into her latest collection. Earthy and wispy mid-length dresses and skirts, some with delicately hand-painted prints were paired with stark boxy tops in a variety of fabrics. Each look included beautifully hand-crafted appliques that looked like a mesh of small sticks or stoic neck collars tied with a feminine bow. Combat boots tied the look together for that historic feel.

Clothes Horse Clothing paid homage to the famous Woodstock Music Festival. The models’ hair was center parted and curly with the classic late 1960s head band. Their make-up featured rhinestone encircled eyes (ala Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds) and a funky yellow lip. Classic songs from the era accompanied the models down the runway including Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, The Mamas and the Papas. An abstract floral pattern in coral and psychedelic yellow dominated the collection. Silhouettes were loose and flowing yet maintained the groovy vibe with wide collars and fun, pastel faux fur jackets. The collection celebrated peace, love and fashion.

Tangoella’s “Always Modern” mantra was maintained Wednesday night with an au currant nod to sophisticated 90s grunge. The elegant and moody looks in black and merlot were punctuated with lace. Keeping with the romantic theme were a stunningly beautiful butterfly print and antique gold brocade. Fine details such as laser cut leather and Tangoella’s masterful construction added a level of luxury. Models donned slick, high ponytails and strong makeup: including a deep merlot lip. The collection looked lush and wearable.

Devinto perfected the minimalist look with her eco-friendly collection. Designed and produced on Cape Cod, Aiste Zitnikaite’s clothing exudes a quiet sophistication. Slim fitting pants and flowing skirts were topped by simple and beautifully cut tops. Cropped butterfly sleeves added femininity as did fabric fringe detailing along the neckline of a white tunic. As explained on the website: “the designs portray a sense of dichotomy revealing that elegance can be rebellious, a somber mood can bring a sense of comfort, and simplicity can make a bold statement. The eternally-wearable looks were perfectly styled with romantically tousled up-dos and pretty make up.

DAY THREE COVERED BY LYNELL MASTERSON DeBricchio by Antwan Byrd was the opening designer for Thursday evenings show and he did not disappoint. The models were dressed in black or white making the contrast and lines of the fabric a striking display for the season. The women rolled on the runway with sophisticated up do’s revealing the plunging necklines and geometric openings in the front or back of the clothing line. The gold mask eyewear was delightful to see and made the look pop on the runway. DeBrichhio also had its share of beautifully constructed high collared clothing that gave his clothing balance between both low and high necklines. The fabrics had a slight sheen to them and this added glamour to this streamlined look. The simplicity in this line made it clothing must-haves that can stand the test of time and fashion.

The palette for Carissa Lynne was rich in creamy golden and burnt orange hues that were topped off with iridescent shimmering fabrics that flowed, as the models walked on the runway. Lace was used frequently in the designer’s fashion line which reminded me of the warm feeling I get when watching a sunset. As the ladies strutted their stuff, the moving fabric was caught in the light and shone in various ways that added mystery to make you long to see more of these beautiful pieces. All of this was highlighted by the use of buttons, rich velvets, embroidered lace and patterns that resembled falling leaves for the autumn season. Viewing Carissa Lynne Designs was reminiscent of a romantic fall evening when the tones of the evening provoke warmth, depth and surprises.

When the models came out in their ankle high sheer hose and high heels, I knew something special was about to occur on the runway. Janet Howard’s season showcased high style, think Audrey Hepburn, with just enough funk and updates that the entire look felt fresh and new. I couldn’t take my eyes off the coats and gorgeous layers underneath. The tones in this line were mostly deep ebony with hints of tan and white. With the showcase of textured faux furs, long clinging dresses and draped pearl necklaces, I was transported to a time and place that evoked high fashion and endless evenings.

Pretty pinks, greys and coffee colored knits took the runway over when Dylanium Knits hit the stage. Thick long cable stitched sweaters with shawl collared tops were the center of attention from this fashion line. The use of haram pants and jeans along with sweater dresses gave the look an invitation to cuddle up with some warm cocoa by the fireplace, doing a lot of nothing on a cool Sunday afternoon. Don’t be surprised though, by the sexy side openings on the sleeveless sweaters that add just enough style to make an easy transition from casual to dress-up. Dylanium Knits had the corner in cozy with flair.

DAY FOUR COVERED BY VALERIE LANGLAIS

Bostonian Collette Chretian, brought Parisian glamour to Providence with la Fille Collette. The models looked lovely in hair braided into “bob hairstyles and exaggerated lashes (in green, just for fun!). The flattering dresses (expertly made on Cape Cod) were predominantly black or white but a charming green and purple print found its way into the collection as well. The looks were beautifully engineered with unique and unexpected cut outs on sleeves, bodices and/or hemlines. The one-shouldered gown was so elegantly cut that it made the whole silhouette fresh and new. The artful simplicity and impeccable construction of the collection makes this a label to watch (and wear!)

With slicked back, wet look hair and glitter-accented eyes, the models brought the collection of Angelica Timas to life. The diverse collection featured suits, dresses, jumpsuits and even a faux fur skirt and jacket combo. All of the looks were unique and expressive. It requires amazing creativity to create a two-piece dress in black lace that looks nothing like 1980s Madonna and black leather dresses that are feminine, without looking “biker chic. Incredible details and a healthy dose of attitude gave this collection just the right amount of edge.

Alexandra Nam created a walking art gallery on the runway: luxurious materials meticulously crafted into futuristic, architectural wonders. The models needed only the simplest of slick hair and neutral makeup to showcase the beauty of these looks. The collection is best described by her website: “The Contour Collection is a study to develop an extract form of line and face combined from different dimensions of space. The basic garments were imagined in between layers of space. Then, dissected in each dimension and, realigned later. The collection observes basics as abstract objects rather than seeing them in social contexts. It depicts curated images of overlapping graphic elements. The collection projects an outcome of an attempt to capture multiple viewpoints to represent the object in a greater matter such as cubism.

Nick Pini showed a collection that was young, fun and very sexy. “His girl” is obviously fashion forward and confident. The micro-skirted cocktail dresses varied in silhouette but not in elegance. The looks were accessorized with flesh-toned over the knee stocking adding just a touch of vintage sex appeal. Luxurious draping and meticulously hand crafted-detailing give the collection an air of sophistication. Models were styled with pig-tails and exaggerated lower eyelashes giving them a “bad-girl baby doll” look.

DAY FIVE COVERED BY OLGA HAWWA

Cozy knits in unpredictable shapes and colors were the highlights of Amy Stetkiewicz’s show. Oversized looks promise to be a huge trend for Fall 2016. Choose one of her exaggerated sweaters over lace, or her lush crop sweater in silver over her impeccably tailored metallic pants. Fun fur coats in practical 3/4 lengths also came down the runway. The classic navy; equally stunning over jeans or an evening dress is a coat that the wearer will reach for time and time again... For the most adventurous fashion types, her fuchsia and taupe combination coat nails it. Her brilliant combinations of fur, leather, and knits in colors that pop are sure to give the fashionista seeking warmth a myriad of options next fall!

Euro-Chic embodied the theme of Jess Abernethy’s Fall 2016 line. Forgiving silhouettes make the line an ideal choice for women of all figures and sizes. Her loose-fitting and flowy dresses definitely gave off a sexy-with-a-touch-of-romance vibe. Other pieces showed off Jess’s ability to create interest in her clothing. Her use of paneling to mix prints, color, and textures are the WOW factor… ideal for the woman who wants a classic cut with a lot of flair. A standout piece was her cropped white jacket with blue alligator print leather treatment. A stunning jacket in its design and versatility. Great with Abernethy’s sequin pants for a night on the town or her ankle grazing pants for daytime.

When a fashion show opens with drag performers in neon bright and leopard print gowns, you know you are in for an ultra-dramatic show! As always, Jonathan Joseph Peters delivered just that. Peter’s passion for creating easy-to-wear clothing with an avant-garde twist was shown in his dresses with bold cutouts, unpredictable color combinations, and ingenious method of incorporating wraps as part of an evening ensemble. Peter’s Fall 2016 line stand-out colors: greens in shades of lime, kelly, and olive as well as purples and lilacs. His ability to mix prints and color seamlessly inspires the wearer to step out of her personal fashion box… A lilac floral two-piece pant set with a mustard toned collar… A kelly green shawl over his purple cocktail dress… all with bling from Flaunt Boutique to add that important finishing touch. Evening favorite; an off-the-shoulder medieval inspired gown in shocking hot pink - a definite head turner!

What a week! We saw it all. from the classic and wearable must-haves for every wardrobe to the stuff whimsical dreams are made of. Something for everyone. Equally important is the sense of camaraderie that brings the fashion and arts community and its supporters together. For an entire week, we all get the opportunity to express our own personal fashion style. We go to see and be seen. But most of all, we go to get inspired by our friends: the designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, and production crew who all worked tirelessly to share their vision. StyleWeek is a true testament to the creative talent that is putting Providence on the fashion map!

Well…you may do an array of things, but there are at least three main areas that you pay close attention to before the world is graced with your presence; the outfit… the accessories…and the fragrance. You want to look and smell amazing to awaken all of the senses when you walk into a room!

Let’s apply that same energy and attention to detail for the décor at your next party. Yes, fashion and interior design are intertwined! Incorporating your “fashionality” (fashion/personality) when decorating will provide a unique and charming atmosphere whether you’re going for a rustic, vintage, or modern look. Springtime is here and for some of us who have endured the winter season, spring is a celebration of the return of warm weather! Using nature along with the latest fashion trends is a fun way to capture that special moment in time and leave a fresh and natural eye-catching impression on your guests.

The dinning or buffet table is the focal point where your guests come together to chat and chew. Fresh flowers, fruits, vegetables, plants, branches, sea shells and stones can be used to create a charming, colorful and aromatic flair around the room. Drape vinery from tables, windows and ceilings and incorporate different shapes and sizes of vases, canisters and jars as a source of artistic inspiration. Exploring a variety of colors, textures, patterns, prints and fabrics for tablecloths, table runners and chair dĂŠcor can be used to interplay style and beauty. Adorning the area with floating candles is a timeless staple that adds, lighting, fragrance as well as the natural elements of water and fire. Decorative mirrors can provide that sparkle, shimmer and ambience to the scenery.

Whatever stylish dĂŠcor you choose, it will be the artistic reflection of the space you want to create for lasting memories for you and your guests!

A WINK FROM...Italy

What’s the Weather Like in Italy...? By Cinzia Antonelli

T

he Italian peninsula is located right in the center of the Mediterranean, which directly influences its climate. Climatically, it presents a large variety of factors, which depend on its orography, from its considerable size in latitude, by the presence of an arc mountainous such as the Alps and the Apennines and the presence of the seas that surround us.

unfortunately also affects Italy.

Autumn in Toscany

The increase in global temperature, due to the high concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which causes the so-called “greenhouse effect”, has consequences increasingly visible in all climatic zones, starting with the serious condition of some weather patterns due to increasingly frequent natural disasters and the disruption of the seasons.

The fundamental feature of its climate, and in any case the Mediterraneity (Mediterranean climate), can be summarized in the sunshine, the mildness of the air, and in the brightness of the sky that also made the background for many literary and artistic works of the greatest writers and artists from all the world.

As in all occasions, Italy offers various routes where you can enjoy the typical atmospheres of each season. So, just like a real journey, I will take you through my beautiful country, making you move with the colors, flavors and aromas typical of what each year offers us, starting from the spring, a period that has just knocked on our doors.

Summer brings drought, and winters are generally mild and rainy. Then there are the characteristics of the “so-called” Mediterranean climate, which particularly affects the coastal regions of Italy and its islands.

This season is a full explosion of colors, emotions, where nature is celebrating the rebirth of life. There are thousands of gardens and parks to visit, each with its own unique and inimitable blooms.

The typical winter atmosphere in Italy is represented by clear skies and low temperatures in the North where the Alpine mountains reside. The temperature can drop below -20 degrees in the mountainous areas as well as abundant snowfall above 2000 meters above sea level, while over 3000 meters are the perennial snow temperatures. Along the coast temperatures are milder and can reach 10 degrees. The weather is rather disturbed with temperatures, but not frigid in the South.

Traveling to the most beautiful parks in Italy we can stop to admire the Gardens of Ninfa in Latina, where you will see the natural landscapes and exotic Mediterranean, with stunning views of mountain scenery and hills, kissed by the sun.

In summer the weather is stable, with long periods of drought in the South. There are also frequent episodes of thunderstorms in the North which are subject to the influence of fresh air to the west, especially the Alpine mountain chain. Temperatures often exceed 30 degrees in the north, and in the more southern regions can even exceed 40 degrees. But I want to emphasize that we are witnessing a phenomenon of climate change around the planet, which

In summer, all along the Italian peninsula, we are spoiled with choices of where to visit. If you’re already thinking about the next vacation in Italy, to have an unforgettable summer, check out these evocative and beautiful beaches. In Sicily, the island of Favignana, you can enjoy a bright, blue sea, the spectacular Mediterranean Flora and unspoiled nature. How about tasting a succulent mulberry iced (Granita), before swimming in these wonderful warm waters? Another place that needs no introduction is Capri, with its famous and spectacular Faraglioni and the beaches of Marina Piccola, where you can admire the colors of

an inviting sea. For social evenings with friends, what say you have an aperitif in the Piazzetta? A destination equally charming that we can not miss, is the Circeo National Park in the Lazio region, an area along the Tyrrhenian coast, rich in rocky vegetation Mediterranean, walk up the cliff to see numerous caves inhabited by man since prehistory. Several ancient writers such as Homer (Greek), agree in relating the origin of the name of this place with the legend of the sorceress Circe. In the epic poem the Odyssey, Homer tells fact of greek hero Ulysses stay at these places inhabited by perfidious enchantress Circe. Even in Autumn, Italy never fails to offer charm; you can walk along quiet forest trails, just listening to the crunch that every step on the ground covered with leaves. It’s ‘the show of the “foliage” typical of autumn when the leaves vary in infinite shades of yellow, brown, green, burgundy and red. There are many cities,

gardens and parks where you can enjoy this wonderful spectacle of nature. Among these beautiful places I want you to enjoy the natural scenery of the Val d’Orcia in Tuscany, that UNESCO appointed in 2003, UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its villages renaissance of pleasant taste. The suggestion of all landscapes in autumn, here is emphasized by a patchwork of warm colors: yellow beech, hornbeam of the brown, the red of boxwood, orange maples, and at this time we do here in Italy make frequent trips to the woods to find valuable mushrooms and chestnuts, and the unmistakable aroma of red wine. Finally, here comes again the old winter, who will be with us for a long time. In Italy, from North to South, the mountain is the main protagonist in the winter, with its landscapes of alpine lakes, fairytale forests, charming villages rich in tradition and history and a lot of good food. The snow-capped peaks attract many tourists who want to play sports as well as enjoy some relaxation.

Capri Island

The most popular areas are Cortina d’Ampezzo and Madonna di Campiglio in northern Italy, falling towards the center is to be admired definitely Abetone in Tuscany, and the National Park of the Sibillini Mountains in the Marches.

more. I do not know about you, but I felt like never leaving!

But a very nice area, not far away from my home town, where I go often with my family is the National Park of Abruzzi, with the famous resorts of Pescasseroli, Campo Felice and Prati di Mezzo.

Gardens of Ninfa

Here there is a great variety of entertainment for all, such as skiing, mountaineering, snowboarding, hiking, Nordic walking, mountain biking and many

NICK PRO Releases Debut Mixtape, “HARSH REALITY”

R

By Jaclyn Pelopida

hode Island rap sensation Nick Pro released his debut mixtape, “Harsh Reality,” on Friday, February 5, 2016. “Harsh Reality” is an indepth presentation of the dark days as well as the vibrant new beginnings. It takes you through a series of songs that start the album with hard-hitting beats and hard-hitting lyrics. Pro’s style represents an old soul with a new flavor that is distinctly heard throughout the mixtape. Pro had previously released three singles off of the album, “Pure Gold,” “Monopoly,” and “Closer to God,” to get the hype started and leave the listeners salivating for more.

Pro. On the R&B-influenced track “All Night,” Darion Lance lends his smooth and sensual vocals to assist Pro in creating a track that’s favorable for women. “Still I Stand” features celebrity rap artist in Joe Scudda, a North Carolina native from Justus League. The last track on the mixtape, “Another Level,” features Executive Producer HusH introducing Pro to the awakened music industry that he just left his imprint on. “Harsh Reality” is currently available for free download on Pro’s official website, www.nickpromusic.com and on his soundcloud, www.soundcloud. com/nickpromusic. Stay up to date with the latest news on Pro and his “It’s my time to shine,” is one of the prominent lyrics from Pro’s first track on the mixtape, “Bandwagon,” and unbeknownst to Pro, this is also the theme of the album. With a diverse group of producers and eclectic beats, this mixtape has a wide appeal that will please different genres and demo graphics. Unlike others in the industry, Pro writes his own lyrics, allowing the album to touch on his personal side and invite the listener to not only get to know Pro, but to also hop along for the ride. A lyrical genius with original content puts Pro in a league of his own; a show stopper. Each track is distinctively different from the other but at the same time flows in a cohesive manner to create a full-length mixtape. Creativity and flow come natural for Pro who’s rhythm matches each song with its own power but rather complements the song than overpower it. From the Kanye West-inspired “Villain,” to the upbeat, late 80s/early 90s rap vibe of “Old School, New School,” Pro shows he’s a multi-talented artist that can dive into the dark and come out the other side with a new flavor. “Harsh Reality” offers two features on it; a first for

music by following him on Instagram (@nickpromusic), Twitter (@nickpromusic) and his official Facebook page (Nick Pro). Executive producing for “Harsh Reality” is HusH. Mixing and mastering for the mixtape is Merc. Mixed and recorded at The Boiler Room Studio. Management/Art is Erik Russo for CMYKILL. Other notable producers are: Larry Oh, Bro B, NY Bangers, Dreamlife Beats, Dirty South Beats and Commanding General. Nick Pro is a 24-year-old rap prodigy from Johnston, Rhode Island. He received a Communications degree from Suffolk University in Boston, Mass., and has worked for multiple media-related companies. Pursuing musical artistry has been Pro’s passion and ambition for over a decade as he’s previously released underground music and has showcased his music in numerous performances over the years. “Harsh Reality” is just a taste of what is yet to come from this young, musical sensation.
