nternationally- acclaimed hairstylist Ed Blum spent early February at the New York Fashion Week 2017 (NYFW) where the world’s leading fashionistas set style and fashion trends for the coming year. There aren’t many local hairstylists who are connected to the world of fashion in a global way. But Blum, who with his business partner wife Norah owns the trendy, award-winning Makeovers Salon in Easton, Mass., just outside Boston, is a rare exception. 4 | TRADE SECRETS | May –June 2017

His stylists are internationally trained by him and by stage artists from as far as Russia thanks to Blum’s globe-trotting connections. “No one else in our area gets invited to play important roles in Fashion Week, so it’s a feather in our cap,” Blum smiles. Last year at Milan Fashion Week, he prepped models on behalf of a major hair product maker. He has also worked on Donna Karan's DKNY show. For New York Fashion Week, Blum was chosen as part of the prestigious stylist/ consulting team for Wella Life (#wellalife) and for Sebastian Professional, both hair care and coloring products made by Coty, which also owns the Cover Girl and Calvin Klein brands. ith the warmer temps arriving soon, we all start thinking of shedding the extra clothing and revealing more skin. For many women, this brings up one skin issue that can make us very self-conscious… stretch marks. TRADE SECRETS | May—June 2017 | 9

What are stretch marks? How do we get them? Can anything be done about them? Stretch marks are the result of tearing of the dermis; the layer of skin below the epidermis. When the skin is stretched out at a rapid pace, areas of the dermis can tear resulting in stretch marks. Blood vessels are showing through the tears at first, but then luckily, over time, most of these marks fade into a silvery hue.

repair damage to the skin’s collagen and elastin. This helps to minimize the appearance of stretch marks. • Kola nut extract soothes the skin and helps strengthen capillaries and veins. • Horse Chestnut helps reduce the appearance of redness. • Gotu Kola helps rejuvenate the skin. Grapeseed oil helps promote skin resiliency.

Although nothing can fully prevent stretch marks if your skin is prone to them, there are a few things one can do to reduce the risk of getting them in the first place. (If you are pregnant or have any medical conditions, always seek the advice of your health care provider.) • Avoid rapid weight gain. Regular exercise will not only help maintain the figure, but will also help keep the skin healthy and resilient. • Avoid crash dieting. Slow and steady weight loss is best. • Eat a balanced diet to keep the skin at its healthiest. Drink water! I always advise my clients to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. Water helps the skin maintain its hydration and moisture, delivers essential nutrients, replenishes skin tissue, and increases elasticity in the skin which helps the skin “bounce back” to its original state. On the surface of the skin, experiencing itchy or dry skin or going through a rapid weight gain period might be a sign that stretch marks are developing. Although topical creams can’t necessarily prevent all of them from forming, they can reduce the number of stretch marks that occur and can minimize their appearance. taking steps towards diversifying body types on the runway. Look at Ashley Graham! She is all over the pages of Sports Illustrated, even shared the front cover. And, Project Runway’s contestant, Ashley Tipton, showed her plus-size finale collection with plus-size models. It’s in the early stages, but there is a transition in the fashion industry to make beautiful, stylish clothing that’s accessible for the larger-sized woman. There’ve been these traditional lists of DON’TS & RULES and I’m not even sure why they all started. Toss ‘em! Instead of curbing your creativity within your closet, let’s step outside the box and break some rules. Forget the idea of what plus-size fashion or styling for the curvy woman was and let’s share 5 Tips for today!

1. Foundation is key! I don’t care what size you are; every look should start with great fitting undergarments. Most women want to hide the parts of their body they find unflattering. By wearing baggy, loose clothing to camouflage will only make you look bigger than you are. That’s the worst solution to try and make you feel better about yourself.

DAY ONE Fashion Week 2017 started out with a roar at Inskip Mercedes Benz in Warwick, RI. The luxury vehicle dealer opened its doors to fashion on February 23rd and proved to be an enjoyable backdrop for the designer collections. Saxophonist MIKE ROLLINS (quickly becoming a Fashion Week favorite!) welcomed the audience and played again during intermission. A stunningly beautiful 2012 SLS AMG convertible (collector’s item) served as a fun prop on the runway.

On a more personal note: in a brief conversation with a couple of these artists before the show, they revealed how much being included in FWRI meant to them. Fashion is art and art is selfexpression. No one personifies that more than these beautiful human beings. It was our pleasure to include them.

n 2015, iconic Boston designer David Joseph gallantly came to the rescue of Aimee’s Farm Animal Sanctuary in Gilbert, Arizona. In 2016, He used his superpowers to raise another $200,000+ for the rescue and now, merely three years in, Fashion to the Rescue is the biggest fashion event in the city. David’s dear friend Aimee Takaha runs the farm that specializes in the rescue of farm animals from abuse, neglect and slaughter. Despite the number and diversity of the animals, it is run entirely with private funding and the help of volunteers. In his love for the animals and the amazing work Aimee and the farm do in her community (including working with children with special needs and military veterans suffering from PTSD), David found his new passion. The star-studded gala began with a rousing performance by Verna Turbulence before MC Randy Price of WCVB prepped the crowd for the evening’s festivities. Man-of -the-hour David Joseph, with his gal-pal Marjorie Clapprood introduced the crowd to Aimee Takaha and the farm in a poignant film showcasing the incredible “babies” that have been rescued and the care they require: Heart-melting stories of animals and the humans whose lives are enhanced by them.

Celebrity models happily volunteered to don David’s glamourous creations; many have been clients for years. Part of the genius of his work is his ability to incorporate the client’s needs and personality into his artistic vision.

Along with MC Randy Price, WCVB Boston was well represented: Cindy Fitzgibbon, Nichole Berlie, Karen Homes Ward, Janet Wu and Heather Unruh all looked stunning in the couture looks. Their fellow journalists Jackie Bruno-Finley (NBC), Erica Corsano (Boston Herald), Liz Walker and Gail Huff also delighted the crowd.
