FROM THE EDITOR

Meet Gustavo Leon once, and you are not likely to forget him. The Boston Herald’s creative managing editor is a force to reckon with. We were curious about this very handsome, always dapper personality, and so we asked, “What makes you tick?” Entertaining and inspiring. Summer always brings out the fun in any community and in Italy, there is a lot to do, see and eat. Our Italian contributor, Cinzia Antonelli, raves about the many different activities you can enjoy while you visit her country.

F

or a short time there, we didn’t know whether we were coming or goIng with this weather, but we might finally be over the hump so, “welcome to our swimsuit issue!” With this this time of

year comes the angst of what to wear to the beach. Before you go shopping for the perfect swimsuit, however, check out our cover article by Wardrobe & Styling Director, Lisa Shorr. She talks about finding the right swimsuit for your body shape. In this issue, we also have a designer who also knows quite a bit about body shapes when designing for the female form - June Monteiro, owner of Enamour. She aims to enthrall, captivate and inspire. For our Street Lurker segment, we spotted Jennifer Dutra, of Chez Moustache, and we loved her style. She shares how she learnt to let go of her inhibitions, as well as her fears of what others thought of her. Ever wondered about the hashtag craze and what it’s all about? Sixica Devine, our business writer, explains what it is, and how to make the most of it. This month, our Talent Talk subject is Janelle Davis model, actress and a world traveler. We were graced with the company of her dog Lucky who, at 12 years old, is still as energetic and curious as a pup. She was just a joy to have around. Ok, what’s your TV viewing guilty pleasure? That one show you love to watch but hate to admit to? Come on, you know you have one! Our lifestyle & entertainment writer, Jaclyn Pelopida, spills the beans and shares hers.

So, you took Lisa’s advice and picked out the perfect swimsuit for your body type. Now it’s time to hit the beach, but you’re agonzing over your butt, gutt and thighs. Don’t fret, because fitness contributor, Matt Espeut gives us some superb tips on how to tighten those problem areas. Unless you grew up under the proverbial rock in the 80’s, you must know famed R&B singer Johhny Gill. From the boy band, “New Edition,” to “LSG” and now “Heads of State,” Gill’s career spans over 30 years. He was in town for a one-night show last month, and Tara Haywood got a moment to catch up with him. He is still going strong and we are very proud to feature the interview here. Also in the green room, Donahue Instructor Valerie Langlais shares her experience teaching kids about the business and technique of professional modeling. She tells us what it takes to be a successful child model, and the pleasure she derives from seeing her young students bloom. We covered two events around town this month – “Indulge” was a Mom’s Night Out extravaganza at the Emerald Square Mall, where our wardrobe & styling director, Lisa Shorr, provided commentary for the runway show. The other main event last month was the annual Rhode Island School of Design “Spring Collection Fashion Show.” Featuring over 150 models, the show is the largest one-night fashion production in the New England area. We bring you some highlights from the evening. This is our biggest issue yet, so you‘ve got a lot of reading to do. Go change into your swimsuit, grab a beach towel (don’t forget the sunscreen!) and meet us out on the sand. Happy reading and…

And for the wine and coffee drinkers, there are so many tooth-whitening tools today. From toothpaste to whitening pens, our Beauty contributor, Kristen Verducci, breaks them all down.

Catching Up With

Johnny Gill

By: Tara Marie Haywood

P

ardon the cliché, but if you take a quick glance at Johnny Gill’s Twitter profile, you’ll see the following: “Still doing it after 31 years. Everywhere”. The truth behindthese words became expressly clear when I was recently afforded the opportunity to sit down with this incredibly humble and charismatic entertainer. Chatting with him and witnessing his electrifying live performance certainly invoked feelings of nostalgia for this reporter! While personally much more familiar with his work from the 90s and beyond, I decided to delve a bit deeper into his background for purposes of this article. From a young age, Johnny Gill, (or ‘JG’, as he is often referred to as), was recognized for his incredible vocal range. With roots in his family-based Gospel group, JG’s voice was undeniably special. Fortunately for us, a childhood friend, songstress Stacy Lattisaw, encouraged Gill to pursue a musical career. His talents were brought to light and the R&B world was presented with a future legend. One of his earliest hit recordings, ‘Perfect Combination’, was a (soulful) bubblegum duet with Lattisaw. This young teenage boy’s ability to croon with such depth and seamless transitions caused record labels and producers alike to quickly take note. | 401.353.4940 | donahuemodels.com | Trade Secrets | Volume 2, Issue 2 | 7

By 1990, however, New Edition had essentially disbanded. While Bobby Brown had already been enjoying success as a solo artist, it didn’t take long for his former bandmates to follow in his stead. Michael Bivens, Ricky Bell and Ronnie DeVoe formed the New Jack Swing-sensation Bell Biv DeVoe. Ralph Tresvant began to climb the charts on his own, and, the focal point of this article, Johnny Gill, became a household name. Even if R&B is not your music genre of choice, you are familiar with his multi-platinum songs. If you can’t sing along to ‘My. My, My’, or ‘Rub You the Right Way’, you may have very well been living under a rock. In the mid-to late 90s, JG collaborated with fellow artists Keith Sweat and Gerald Levert to form one of the hottest trios of the era, LSG, an acronym moniker derived from the names of the three. Beginning high school around this time, you can bet LSG was in my

CD player. If you are anything like me, then you also listened to those ‘Quiet Storm’ request lines, and heard ‘My Body’ and ‘My Side of the Bed’ pretty much every night! (Admit it, you did.) Fast forwarding to present-day, JG tours the country as both a solo artist and as part of ‘Heads of State’ (with old friends Brown and Tresvant). If that isn’t enough, New Edition is reuniting for a much-anticipated 2014 tour that kicks off in June! The ability for an artist to simultaneously—and successfully—perform as both a soloist and part of a group speaks volumes for Gill’s stamina. In the accompanying video interview, I ask JG what he attributes to his maintaining staying power in an everchanging and supremely competitive industry. He also graciously gives us a bit more insight into what his hectic lifestyle is like, as well as what he likes to do in his ‘down’ time.

Teaching the Children What I’ve Learned as a Modeling Coach

A

By Valerie Langlais Photos: Valencio Small

At age 21, after a few freelance modeling jobs, I decided to enroll in the adult program at Donahue. I loved learning how true professionals navigate this business. Annette Donahue, the former director, was straight-forward and honest; I admired her immediately. At my graduation, she asked each of us to speak briefly about ourselves and our experiences in class. I mentioned, among other things, that I was also a dance teacher. As it turns out, the agency was in need of a new instructor for the children’s program. I began apprentice teaching soon after, and the rest, as they say, is history! | 401.353.4940 | donahuemodels.com | Trade Secrets | Volume 2, Issue 2 | 11

fter all of these years, I still get a rush of pride when I see a former student in an ad, on the runway or in a commercial. I have been teaching the children’s modeling and development program for Donahue Models & Talent for 21 years now, and it’s just as much fun as when I first started.

Model: Preston DaPonte I have students as young as 4-years-old and up to age 12, and I truly believe that each one of them has benefited from the program. Increasing confidence in children is never a detriment, even if that child doesn’t pursue a modeling career. Children learn about poise, professional etiquette, and self respect; lessons that will serve them well for a lifetime. Many parents over the years have commented on the elevated self-esteem of their children after just a few weeks of class. This is an even greater source of pride for me than seeing them work.

ellow teeth are never in style unless, of course, you are a pirate. If you aren’t a pirate and are curious about which whiteners are the best for you, read on! Everyone can experience the yellowing of teeth. The most common culprits are wine, coffee, tea and smoking cigarettes. Luckily, we have a lot of options right at our fingertips that can lighten and brighten our smile. The best ways to keep teeth white, of course, are regular brushing, flossing and dental cleaning. Sometimes, however, those basic measures just aren’t enough. Dentists. For the quickest results, dentists offer teeth-whitening services that can lighten up to eight shades. A few treatments may be needed to achieve that, and the downfall is that these treatments are very expensive. Your dentist can also fit you with mouth trays for a treatment that you can do at home; you just fill the trays with the lightener and wear two hours a day for two weeks. These trays are not as expensive as an in-office treatment, but can still be very costly.

16 | Trade Secrets | 2014 Volume 2, Issue 2 | donahuemodels.com | 401.353.4940

Overall, whitening your teeth is not a permanent fix. Most lighteners will work for about four months and then you might need to lighten again. The practice is only possible on natural teeth; it will not lift on porcelain veneers, and teeth that have a grey hue to them do not respond well either. Whatever lightening method you choose, remember to always read the manufacturer’s directions and be careful not to over-lighten. Lightening can increase sensitivity so it is a good idea to use toothpaste for sensitive teeth while you are brightening your smile. If your teeth begin to hurt you may want to give them a rest.

Over the counter. If you would like some less expensive options, over-the-counter applications may be right for you. Whitening strips are clear adhesive pieces with a bleaching gel on them; they stick to your teeth and can be worn twice a day for a half-hour. If you stay committed, you will definitely see a difference in a few days, with optimum results in two weeks. They are easy to use and very effective.

It’s a known fact that not only is a white smile very attractive, it also makes you look younger and friendlier! However, be practical with the color; a blinding white is never natural. So let’s start brightening, and show off those pearly whites!

Whitening brush. A very quick treatment is the whitening brush where you paint the bleaching agent on to your teeth. They are not quite as effective because your saliva will wash some of it away, but if you have very little time, even a little lighting is better than none! They are great for people who are constantly on the go. Whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes. Whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes do work, but only whiten a couple of shades. Want to try a nice homemade remedy that will cost you just a few dollars? - Dip your toothbrush in peroxide and then dip it in baking soda. - Brush for two minutes, rinse your mouth out and then brush with regular toothpaste for about 30 seconds. - Do this one to two times a week for about two weeks and you will see a noticeable dif- ference! Do not use more than four times a month because you don’t want to weaken the enamel on your teeth. | 401.353.4940 | donahuemodels.com | Trade Secrets | Volume 2, Issue 2 | 17

elcome to June! We are on the brink of summer and we all know what that means – the beach! Sultry sun, sand sifting through our toes, jaunts in the ocean all enhanced by that fabulous swimsuit! Did I really say fabulous? I did! If you have not purchased your season’s swimsuit yet, this is the article for you! By the way, don’t wait too much longer to make this purchase. By the time you hit the stores quantities and sizes will be limited!

Hourglass Shoulders and hips, bust align with a defined waist. Rejoice and accent that waist! • Don’t break up the colors - to look and stay proportioned, have a matching top and bottom. • Go for the wrap - Wrap Suits do wonders to enhancing your waist! Likewise a swimsuit that has a colorblocking band around the center creates the same effect. • Halter Traffic – Halter tops are great for enhancing shoulders.

Rectangle Hips, shoulders align, not a clearly defined waist. The rectangle often carries their weight around their tummies. • Rouching – like a great shirt, rouching is also magical on a bathing suit! Whether you select a one piece or a bikini, the pleats help to camouflage this often-tricky area! • Select a “girly” suit – A great way to soften this shape is to select a suit with ruffles or bows. This is a great “3 F’s” trick. If the suit fits and flatters your body and the ruffles compliment your figure and provide a positive focal point for the eye to land, then you have a winner! • The “one” piece – A belt, ruffle or color band around the waist of a one-piece or a monokini creates a more hourglass look.

The Triangle Fuller hips and legs with smaller shoulders and bust. The goal is to bring the “eye” up to the upper half of your body.

sure you have a solid bottom. The stripes will visually extend your top half to look more in line with your lower half. If you prefer a one-piece, select a suit that is solid on the bottom with color and/or embellishment around the bust area. • Don’t band-aid the smaller bust! Avoid the bandeau – this will make your already flat chest look flatter! Instead, opt for more structured padded tops, halter-top, triangular shape or rounded cups. If you are not a fan of padding – how about ruffles to add a little extra material or a little bling with sequins!

The Inverted Triangle Known for smaller hips and thin legs with either broad shoulders or a large bust. In this case, your mission is to bring the “eye” down to focus on your lower half! • Slim the shoulders – The halter-top is a very friendly style on so many body types including the inverted triangle. Tops that have thicker straps will visually minimize the shoulders. Stick to dark colors on top! • Enhance the shoulders – strapless and bandeaus showcase shapely shoulders. • Rock the boy shorts! The goal is to balance your lower half with the top half. Boy shorts add width to the hips/thigh area. Go for lighter colors for the bikini/tankini bottoms. The eye always migrates to the lighter colors.

Maternity Celebrate your body with a beautiful suit! A tankini or suit with ruching arevery figure friendly. Patterns such as delicate florals or polka dots help to distract the eye.

• Mix and Match – This body shape is not a “one-sizefits-all!” Buying a smaller top and a larger bottom is quite common. If a tankini or bikini is your choice, go for horizontal stripes in your bust area, just make 20 | Trade Secrets | 2014 Volume 2, Issue 2 | donahuemodels.com | 401.353.4940

ust call Janelle Davis the world traveler. Not only has she been to every single state on the east coast, she’s also been to several states in the mid-Atlantic, the west coast and has also traveled to both Europe and Canada. “I’ve always loved to travel. I started traveling to Chicago when I was in middle school to stay with my aunt and uncle for the summers,” explains Davis. She was born in Las Vegas, then moved to North Carolina and has since settled in Rhode Island where she obtained her B.S. degree in Marketing and an A.S. degree in Advertising Communications from Johnson & Wales University. Davis has also had her fair share of job opportunities as she has worked in a variety of industries over the years that include advertising sales, retail management, office administration, medical labs and food service. “When I worked in restaurants, while in college, I used to sing the ‘Oscar Meyer Wiener’ song to keep me focused. It helped me remember who ordered what, what table was next, etc. Strange, I know, but it worked,” she laughs.

TS: “So overall, how long have you been acting/modeling?” JD: “I first started modeling when I was a toddler. I was in a Sears catalog as well as an in-store model. I revived my interest in the industry back in 2007 and later found Donahue Models and Talent in 2009. However, while in my teen years I was a member of my middle school and high school performance choirs and acted in the theater arts productions.” TS: “And what has been the biggest challenge for you, so far?” JD: “Juggling the workload. Having a full-time day job and still trying work as much as possible in the industry can be a huge challenge.” TS: “Speaking of day jobs, what’s yours?” JD: “I’m a general manager for Banana Republic.” TS: “What was the last modeling/ acting job that you did?” JD: “I just wrapped an industrial shoot for a wedding videographer training video with Hal Landen for the Oak Tree Productions Company. The website on which the video will be available is www.videouniversity. com” Describing herself as, “outgoing, self aware, with a strong ability to manage and lead others,”Davis also prides herself on being “creative, strong-willed, persistent, sincere and realistic.” TS: “And you have quite an interesting look. What is your nationality?” JD: “I’m Native American and Irish. I’m a direct Decendant of the Eno, Blackfoot, Cherokee, Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, and Lumbee Nations of Virginia, and North Carolina.” 46 | Trade Secrets | 2014 Volume 2, Issue 2 | donahuemodels.com | 401.353.4940

“I’ve been a fan of Batman since I was a kid and my parents took me to the Val Kilmer Batman movies, but I definitely prefer Christian Bale. TS: “What is something quirky about you that most people might not know?” JD: “I drive my boyfriend of 7 years crazy on road trips because I love to read road signs, highway signs and even license plates. Honestly, I have no idea why I do that!” Although Davis has traveled all over the world, she was surprisingly able to pick just one place as her best vacation and travel experience. “Germany! It’s way underrated! The people, the culture, the history and the beer! What’s not to love! I definitely want to go back, which is ironic because when I originally went, it was for work and I had no desire to go at first,” she explains. It may seem as though Davis has been almost everywhere in the world, but she has yet to go to Australia and the Fiji Islands which, she says, is next on her list. TS: “What types of TV shows do you enjoy the most?” JD: “Dramas, dramatic comedies, historical documentaries, news, specifically ‘The Colbert Report,’ ‘The Daily Show,’ and ‘NBC Nightly News.’ I do also like sitcoms and adult animated sitcoms like ‘Family Guy’.” TS: “What’s your favorite TV show of all time?” JD: “ ‘Sex and The City,’ because as a female adult, it brings you through the range of emotions, Trials & exciting moments in life that we all go through in one way or another, regardless of what big city, small town or rural community we might live in.” TS: “If you could pick someone famous, to be, for a day, who would you choose?” JD: “Betty White! She’s amazing; she’s still going strong and having some of the best days of her life!” TS: “And what would you do with your first million if you made it really big?” JD: “I would pay off all my student loan debt, pay off all my parents’ debts and buy my dream car. TS: “What’s your favorite type of music?” JD: “I’ve always been a fan of hip hop, country, alternative rock, pop/top 40 and dance music. CHVRCHES.” Since Davis is a regular in the food industry, especially with the Oscar Meyer Weiner theme song constantly stuck in her head, it’s no wonder that she knows exactly what kind of food she loves the most. “I love anything in double chocolate, with peanut butter and chocolate chips! I JUST LOVE CHOCOLATE! I wish I could live on a diet of chocolate alone, (but we all know that won’t work).” Her favorite restaurant in Rhode Island is Julian’s on Broadway in Providence because of the “great locally sourced food and craft beer.” She’s also a fan of Starbucks hot coffee and frappucinos, as well as Dunkin’ Donuts’ dark iced coffee. TS: “Do you have any pets?” JD: “I have one; she’s a Shetland Sheep Dog/ Fox Terrier Mix. She’s amazing! She’s 12years-old and her name is Lucky. She’s also a shelter dog (they need the love).” TS: “Who’s your favorite superhero?” JD: “I’m a ‘Dark Knight’ lady all the way! I’ve been a fan of Batman since I was a kid and my parents took me to the Val Kilmer Batman movies, but I definitely prefer Christian Bale. I like Batman because he was a regular person with a mission, not a superhero who was from another planet or a person who obtained his super powers through some quirky accident.” TS: “Oh, so would you like to drive a dream car, like Batman’s?” JD: “My dream car would be either a Lamborghini or a Maserati. I’ve been a lover of cars since I was kid.” TS: “And lastly, besides modeling/acting, what else that you love to do in your personal life?” JD: “I’ve always had a love for participating in social and professional organizations and I look forward to having an opportunity to join a new organization in the near future As I get older I strive to be successful both personally and professionally and have a well rounded work/life balance.” | 401.353.4940 | donahuemodels.com | Trade Secrets | Volume 2, Issue 2 | 51

TS: “What type of models do you like to represent your clothes on the runway?” JM: “I like strong walkers; all of the collections are inspired by strong women in history or confident women, so when I envision my designs they are always on confident women. So I look for a strong walk first, after that, based on the collection, I narrow down models by the look or feel of the collection.” TS: “Walk us through the process of making and designing the clothes.”

JM: “I always begin by sketching my collections and figuring out a color scheme. From there I draft my patterns, select fabrics and create samples of each design.” TS: “Where do you find the materials for your pieces?” JM: “I do a lot of online wholesale ordering for my fabrics; I don’t find many fabric stores in the New England area with the capability to reorder fabric if I need it.”

TS: “What is your best-selling article of clothing?” JM: “Currently in my Aplomb F/W 2014 collection the pre-orders for the ‘Joanna’ top makes it the best seller so far this year. In my previous collection the ‘Miss C’ dress and ‘Klo’ top sold very well.” TS: “And what is your favorite piece?” JM: “In each collection my favorite piece is always the one that doesn’t sell the best. I’m not sure why that is. But in the design process I will create a dress, (it’s usually always a dress),that I adore and I always think

it will be the standout piece during my runway presentations, but usually it’s overlooked or not purchased often.” Currently located in Cape Cod, Mass., Monteiro sells her clothing designs on her website. If you have an idea of a certain design that you would like, but don’t see featured in Monteiro’s line, it is possible to have something customized for yourself. “On occasion,” Monteiro explains, “I do allow customizations to the pieces offered on my website. Whether that means making a size not offered, or adding length to a top or dress, so that it is more flattering to a figure.

If I offer this service, the buyer pays more than the listed price for the item. Any buyer can speak to me about customizations via my website contact form,” explained Monteiro. TS: “Is every piece one of a kind?” JM: “Because my collection is not mass produced, every piece is made either by me or a seamstress. I believe this makes each piece unique because it has that personal touch.” TS: “Any thought to a men’s line?” JM: “No, if I were to branch out beyond women’s apparel I would create handbags and soft home goods like throw pillows and blankets, etc.” With a pending wedding, new baby girl and a growing business, Monteiro has her hands full, but this is one designer with no plans of slowing down. TS: “What does the future hold for your clothing line?” JM: “Over the course of the next couple of years, I would like to grow ENAMOUR through trunk shows, tradeshows and online sales. Eventually I would like to own my own boutique/ working studio space.”

“I

want a tight butt, flat belly and nice defined legs.” If you are a personal trainer, you have heard this a thousand times, and if you are a woman, you have said this a thousand times. These seem to be the areas of most concern, and get the most focus by many people either just starting a workout program or are already working out. Although I’m a believer that you cannot spot-reduce one or two specific areas of the body without training the entire system, there are certain exercises that will target these problem areas. I like to use, what I call, a systematic approach to training, meaning that I try to cue you to contract muscles while working others at the same time. An example would be making you aware of keeping your feet flat on the floor, contracting your hips and squeezing your glutes while doing an arm exercise, thus promoting the whole system being active all the time. So, when people ask me to train a certain area, I comply, but all the while, I incorporate exercises that do a lot more. I consider your butt and belly to be part of your core, and most of the leg exercises will require stabilization of this area as well, so by doing a series of exercises that will primarily hit these specific spots, it will benefit you in other ways.

| 401.353.4940 | donahuemodels.com | Trade Secrets | Volume 2, Issue 2 | 67

For Your Butt. Glute-Bridge. A basic move for this body part is the glute-bridge. Lay on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor with your heels about six inches away from your butt.

1

Slowly elevate your hips toward the ceiling, lock out, draw your belly and butt inward, squeeze and release. Repeat for three sets of eight to ten reps.

The Bird Dog. An alternative move is the bird dog. On your hands and knees with a neutral spine, extend your fingertips away from your heel forming a straight line with your spine, arm and opposite leg. Hold and squeeze for three seconds; draw your elbow to your knee close to the mid part of your body and repeat six to eight times per side, performing three sets.

For Your Gut Cross Crawl: Standing cross crawl is a simple yet effective exercise that promotes balance and mobility as well as a strong mid section. Stand with your arms high above your head, with your feet shoulderwidth apart. Extend one arm high while you touch the other elbow to your knee.

1

Alternate sides and repeat for three sets of ten.

2

Lying knee tucks. This is another simple yet effective movement. Laying on your back, draw your knees to your chest, exhale and repeat for three sets of fifteen.

For Your Thighs Squats. I like to superset quads with hamstrings to keep the intensity high and to save time by eliminating rest periods. Body weight squats will work well at first, but eventually you will need to load the legs with some added resistance. If weights aren’t available, progress to a split stance squat, then progress by elevating a leg behind you for a single leg version.

1

Hamstrings are another muscle group that will require resistance to be effective, but you can begin with a few basics.

| 401.353.4940 | donahuemodels.com | Trade Secrets | Volume 2, Issue 2 | 77

Good mornings. Place your finger tips behind your ears, draw your elbows back, then bend forward, drawing your chest toward the floor, while rocking back onto your heels, return to the starting position, squeeze your butt and repeat for three sets of ten.

3

Single Leg Deadlift: Another great hamstring movement, stand with a split stance, then reach toward your left toes with your right hand. Stand tall, open your chest, flex your butt and repeat. Do three sets of ten on each side. Advance this move by raising your rear leg and hold your balance.

4

Step Ups. Find a platform approximately knee high. Place one foot on the step and while keeping a tall stance, step up and lock out in the top position. Repeat this movement for three sets of ten on each side. To make it metabolic, alternate legs for sixty seconds; rest for thirty seconds, then repeat.

84 | Trade Secrets | 2014 Volume 2, Issue 2 | donahuemodels.com | 401.353.4940

These basic moves can be advanced by using dumbbells and free weights. All exercises require multiple muscle groups to work together, engaging stabilizers as well as prime movers. They won’t only get you more toned, stronger and more mobile, they will also help with your balance and motor control as well.

I am loving this city vibe that Jessica is wearing! We’ve paired a simple, bright pink tank top with sexy floral shorts and a super fun white satiny bomber jacket. We traditionally think of a bomber jacket in the distressed brown leather. Not this season! New York & Co. modernized this classic style and made it very hip for spring! We incorporated silver bracelets to this look.

I love Melanie in this Michael Kors jumpsuit. The drawstring tie draws our eyes to her waist and the studs add an element of punk that takes this jumpsuit from being casual to a rock star! With the studs, you do not need additional accessories—unless of course you are pairing this look with fierce RED shoes!

A bomber jacket is a great style to add shape to a more athletic frame. This jacket alone can be mixed and matched with many different skirts and jeans too!

This casual spring look is perfect for having lunch with friends or an afternoon bar-b-que! The detailed straps of this crop tank almost look like they were made to match this embroidered mini.

Oh, peplum — how flattering you can be! This sweetheart neckline helps minimize a larger bust while the peplum skirting on this top does a wonderful job hiding the tummy! This is also a great top to create a waist. The royal blue pencil skirt is the perfect length for the office. Here is the rule: if you have to squirm to pull your skirt down when you sit, it is too short!

Look at the embroidery! You can pull out so many of the colors! One way is to add a fun accessory like this set of teal bangles. A creative idea is to move the bangles up your arm to create a banded look! Super cute and trendy!

Want to draw the eye to the waist area? Add a statement belt in a vibrant color!

The RISD Spring Collection Show By: Yemi Sekoni Photos: Valencio Small

A

s you walked into Exhibition Rooms C & D at the Rhode Island Convention Center, the scope of the pending production hit you. Hailed as the largest one-night fashion production in NewEngland, the excitement in the room was already palpable. As we were led to our front row seats, which coincidentally happened to be right across from world renowned designer, Tommy Hilfiger, we took in the scope of it all. This was the Rhode Island School of Design ‘Apparel Design Collection 2014,’ featuring works of the students, not only those graduating this year, but also the classes of 2015 and 2016 with about 150 models from all over the region. The Class of 2016 opened the show with several futuristic outfits under the ‘Re-innovative project,’ where the students were charged with exploring the properties of recycled materials to create a wearable piece. For their print project, they had to create a garment that made optimal use of printed fabric designed by Nicole Miller. Immediately following, was the Class of 2015 with a

medley of looks ranging from solid colors and knits to one-piece jumpsuits and slouchy casual wear. For the knit wear project, they had to design and develop cut-and-sew, knit and machine-knit pieces, and their tailoring project was out of this world, featuring oversized jackets, and exaggerated pieces, as the students investigated tailoring techniques to design and produce tailored looks. Next up was the award and scholarships – presented by the head of department, Catherine Andreozzi and professor Donna Gustavsen. After a quick intermission, the graduating class of 2014 collection was revealed. Vastly creative in its mix of genres and styles, from avant garde to the ethereal, the looks were uninhibited, and it was obvious that the students were unafraid to take risks. They were authentic with their vision, and the audience was treated to the real personality of each look. The show ended with Colin Macgregor’s collection titled ‘Szkocja,’ an all male line up, sexy in Adidas, Scottish kilts, and a lot of swag. Each look was mixed with a business shirt and tie in a blend of ‘professional gone awry,’ and an undertone of an almost effortless masculine sexuality.

WHAT MAKES ME TICK

Gustavo Leon U

sually, when I introduce myself, I have a drink in one hand and I’m shouting a little to be heard over the party, so this essay is a new experience.

And I thrive on those. They’re what get me out of bed in the morning whether I’ve got a new project at work or traveling to someplace I’ve never been - fresh challenges and adventures are what fuel me. When people ask what I do and I tell them Managing Editor/Creative for the Boston Herald, the response is often “what’s that?” They know what reporters and editors do, there are lots of them in movies with gritty newsroom scenes. Designers, not so much. But if Superman’s alter ego Clark Kent had been a designer instead of a mild-mannered reporter, there would have been some much-needed pops of color in that “Fortress of Solitude.” In a nutshell, I direct how information is visually presented to our readers – from putting together the daily cover with the Page One Editor, coordinating special sports presentations after playoffs, Super Bowl and World Series victories, to designing accessible graphics that help readers understand complex political issues and illustrate news of the day, from the 9/11 attacks to the Boston Marathon bombings.

As the Herald is not just a print product anymore, I also design graphics and branding for bostonherald. com and Herald Radio. Whether in print or on the Internet, today’s newspapers have to compete for readers with a slew of other content providers, so finding new, fresh ways to present information is a daily challenge that keeps me going. We’ve all seen vintage newspapers from early last century where the front page was filled to the margins with column after column of text. Of course, those were different times, and reading a broadsheet thick with type was probably the “Grand Theft Auto” of its day. But the industry’s transformation has been phenomenal. Change has played a big role in my life, from the business I’m in to how I shaped my career. It’s been the basis for both the biggest obstacle I’ve overcome and my greatest achievement to date. At 19 years old, I left my native Venezuela and a strong support system headed by my mother, to come to America. When you’re on your own as an immigrant here and don’t speak the language, it’s sink or swim. I chose to swim.

“Creativity and a passion for what I do has helped me achieve so many goals, and my goals keep evolving. They should, I think, or else you don’t grow. I don’t know what I might want to strive for in a year, but I do know I’ll achieve it through hard work and creativity. That, I believe, is how to make your mark.” 120 | Trade Secrets | 2014 Volume 2, Issue 2 | donahuemodels.com | 401.353.4940

I took some courses in Fashion Design at F.I.T. in New York City, but decided sewing was not my “thing”. While deciding what journey to take next, I became a personal shopper in NYC. I tell people, I was a salesman with an accent (and that doesn’t hurt when you’re selling women’s designer sportswear). I later graduated from the New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University. I started at the Boston Herald in 1995, first as a Features Page Designer, then Creative Director and now Managing Editor. It may not have been the typical journalism school path to a media career, but my journey has been a master class in creative problem solving, one that’s led to 39 awards and recognition from the international Society of Newspaper Design. “Everything happens for a reason” is a favorite quote of mine, one I truly believe in. And I pass it on to those coming up in this field – always be mindful that even if it seems that doors are closing, it’s all happening for a reason. The key is to keep going, and never let your confidence waiver. With some exceptions, news is a serious, sometimes tragic business - so decompressing is crucial to maintaining whatever sanity I have left. Traveling, meeting new people, and just enjoying life with friends are what invigorate me. The quality I look for in my friends is the same I strive to embody: Loyalty. Friends who know me best can vouch for this: I let my inner child out to play a lot (there may be pictures, despite promises to destroy them). Nothing excites this Peter Pan more than a ride-filled trip to an amusement park. If, by some random miracle, I were to win an Oscar, the list of people I’d have to thank for inspiring me would run so long that they’d not only play me off the stage, but they’d have to pry my hands from the podium. I’m inspired and influenced by colleagues, friends and family, people I meet – exchanges where someone’s creative spark lights up an idea or new way of thinking.

“At 19 years old, I left my native Venezuela and a strong support system headed by my mother, to come to America. shaped cake. The Feast of Harvested Grains. In Sardinia, summer begins with the famous feast of the harvested grains, which has ancient historical roots. The end of the wheat harvest is celebrated, in the little village of Sadali, with a typical local dish called “I Culurgiouis,” a handmade pasta and a real delicacy for the palate. In August, the village of Aosta, located high in the mountains, organizes the beacon of festivals, with lots of animations and taste workshops: . The Pizza Village Festival. As we all know, pizza is the ruler of every Italian dining table. To get your fill of this famous Italian staple, we have to hop on the picturesque road to Caracciolo – the waterfront of Naples, where it is served in the “Pizza Village,” the biggest festival of pizza in Italy.

After tasting some of the best and most famous Italian foods, let’s take a peek at our most popular film, theatre and music festivals. Tournaments. In Siena, in August, on the famous Palio, the ancient tournament takes place with a costumed medieval horse race. The Clown & Clown Festival. G u i l t y Pleasures The Top Five TV Shows We Watch

But May Not Admit To

By: Jaclyn Pelopida

H

i, I’m Jaclyn Pelopida and I’m an addict. A television addict that is, I’m like really addicted. Before I dive right into my TV guilty pleasures, let me just take you through a weekly review of what is on my DVR at home, the poor thing is filled to the brink every week.

130 | Trade Secrets | 2014 Volume 2, Issue 2 | donahuemodels.com | 401.353.4940

Here is a brief rundown of the shows I watch: “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” (anyone who knows me knows that’s a given), “Revenge,” “Modern Family,” “Pretty Little Liars,” “The Voice,” “X Factor,” “Lindsay,” (the reality show about Lindsay Lohan that proves just what a mess she really is), “2 Broke Girls,” “Friends With Better Lives,” “Teen Wolf,” “Are You The One?,” “Awkward,” “Catfish,” “Girl Code,” “The Real World,” (yes it’s still on the air, the 29th season just wrapped up), “American Horror Story,” “Teen Mom,” “The Vampire Diaries,” and “Good Luck Charlie,” (yes, I’m 24 and I still watch Disney, and no, I’m not ashamed). Whew! And that’s not everything I watch, but no one knows better than my DVR, so I could honestly be missing a handful. Keep in mind those shows are the ones that are currently on air; don’t even get me started about the TV shows that I used to watch, we’ll be here until Christmas. Out of all of the shows I’ve listed above, I must say the five that I would call my guilty pleasures are “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” “Pretty Little Liars,” “The Real World,” “Teen Mom,” and “Good Luck Charlie.” As you can tell, most of them are reality TV shows, because honestly, who doesn’t love to watch reality TV! Whether it’s to get a good laugh, feel better about yourself, watch a competition, or to follow the lives of the rich and famous, watching reality TV is one of the biggest guilty pleasures.

things are clearly made up for TV, (like Kris’s brief journey to Broadway), it does make for one hell of an entertaining Sunday night on the E! “Pretty Little Liars”: Even though my DVR is always chock full of TV shows, this is one show that I never miss and always make sure to watch live. Every Tuesday night, my friend Christina and I get our pints of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and turn to ABC Family at approximately 7:55 p.m. so we don’t miss a single second of our beloved show. While the show is on, the rules are: are no talking and no cell phones until commercial break- we take this very seriously. This show is just so good with constant twists and turns and mysteries around every corner. Although we’re in our mid 20s and are watching a show about teenage girls in high school, Christina and I still love to talk about the fashion on the show and try to buy the same outfits we see.

“Keeping Up With The Kardashians”: Let me just put it out there now, I love the Kardashians. I can’t help it and I know it’s bad, but I just love everything about them. I own all of their clothing, jewelry, accessories, books, perfumes, DVDs and even pens, of all things. My best girlfriends and I are just obsessed with all of the Kardashians and, basically, want to be them - as pathetic as that sounds. Yes, I know they’re all talentless and are only famous because of Kim’s infamous sex tape with then boyfriend Ray J, but you have to hand it to Kris Jenner for turning a sex tape into an empire worth a billion dollars. As talentless as the Kardashians are, they have turned themselves into great businesswomen and the seasons of their show just keep getting better. This past season showed the agony Khloe went through during the divorce from Lamar Odom, and Kim and Kanye West’s major engagement. Although some | 401.353.4940 | donahuemodels.com | Trade Secrets | Volume 2, Issue 2 | 131

I’ve also read all of the books in this series so, of course, I had to tune in to see how it all played out as a television show, and let me tell you, it does not disappoint; Christina and I gasp, yell and jump at almost every episode! “The Real World”: As I stated before, this show is actually still on and the finale for its 29th season aired in April. However, the drama of the seven strangers, picked to live in a house and have their lives changed has sucked me in ever since I was in high school. This past season that just aired was, hands down, my favorite season of all time. I think now, because I’m the same age as the people on the show, I understand certain things better and get a kick out of some of the drama. This was the funniest season ever, thanks to the eccentric Jenny, who would round-house kick her boyfriend in the head in one episode, and then try to contact spirits in the next one. The season was called “Explosion,” because the producers made a great move by bringing in all of the cast’s exes, which shook things up big time and made for a drama-filled season.

“Good Luck Charlie”: Out of all the TV guilty pleasures I’ve listed, I’d have to say, hands down, this is my biggest one. I absolutely love the Disney channel and always have. Back when they used to show original movies like “Brink” and “Double Teamed,” and shows like “Lizzie McGuire” and “Hannah Montana,” Disney was always my go-to channel. I know a lot of the good shows are no longer on the air and some are just plain silly, but some shows like “Good Luck Charlie” and “Jessie” are actually really funny, all while being wholesome for the Disney channel’s demographic. I like to watch these shows as they remind me of my childhood, as awful as that sounds and being that I’m 24. But it just reminds me of simpler days and always puts me in a good mood.

“Teen Mom”: This show, “Teen Mom 2” and “Teen Mom 3” are spin-offs from “16 &Pregnant,” which is also still airing on MTV, although many of the girls from these shows have landed themselves in jail multiple times for charges ranging from DUI, domestic abuse and narcotics, among many other charges, the show still continues to soar in the ratings. When the show first aired, people were outraged that MTV seemed to be “glamorizing” teen pregnancy by giving teenage parents a chance to be on TV, but what many people fail to realize is that the struggles of these teen parents have managed to help teen pregnancy statistics decrease since the airing of the show. The teens on this show deal with the real struggles of parenting at a young age, including custody battles, finishing school, finance issues and of course, trying to prevent a second pregnancy, which some girls on the show fail to do. Each episode is filled with drama from the four different girls on the show, but because every aspect of their life is shown on TV, you begin to feel like you know them and travel the road with them by tuning in every week.

SOCIAL MEDIA #HashTags & All that Jazz; The Top 8 Questions Asked When Creating a Social Media Strategy By; Sixcia Devine

L

ast week I gave a talk on how to grow business, by utilizing social media, to a group of designers and artists. Eighty percent said they either didn’t use social media for their business or rarely used it. Everyone in the room said they have a Facebook, but almost all of them wanted to learn how to use social media as a key part of their marketing strategy. I spent about 40 minutes on the presentation and close to an hour answering specific questions each person had! This got me thinking, “If these folks have so many questions, then many other business owners probably do too.” And you, dear reader, could be one of them.

134 | Trade Secrets | 2014 Volume 2, Issue 2 | donahuemodels.com | 401.353.4940

So, here are the top questions I get from most small businesses. I have found that the questions are the same, whether you are in the creative field or not. How much time should I spend on social media?” Should I create a Facebook page for my business?

Should I purchase followers?

Twitter?

Do? Don’t? What are (#) hashtags?

Question #1: “I use my personal Facebook page for business, should I create a business page?”

Question #3: “What are (#) hashtags and how do I use them?”

We can do a whole workshop on this one! The short answer is - of course! With a business page, you have access to a bunch of things that you don’t on a personal profile. For example, page analytics, tabs to redirect visitors to specific landing pages outside of Facebook and scheduling posts in advance.

The term ‘hashtag’ is used for the word or phrases that follow the pound symbol (#). There are no spaces in hashtags no matter how many words you use. Two examples are #SavvyStarter or #SmallBiz. Hashtags are clickable links, so they are great tools for searching for information on different topics.

Question #2: “Everyone tells me I should be on Twitter. Is that true?”

Question #4: “How much time should I spend on social media?”

No, it’s not. You need to be where your target audience is. If they are on twitter then you need to be tweeting. It’s better to build strong and consistent presences on just a few social networks than to spread yourself too thin. Find the one or two social networks your audience is on and build a community there.

It depends on the results you are looking to achieve. My typical response is 15-20 minutes in the morning and then the same amount of time in the afternoon. Find articles from your favorite bloggers to retweet or share —and schedule your posts throughout the day. Then come back at the end of the day to answer questions and thank those who have shared your content. Check out Hootsuite.com to help manage your posts.

For most actors and stars in Hollywood, Twitter has been a useful tool in building their following and staying connected to their fans. Personalities like Katy Perry boasts 52 million followers, with Justin Bieber a close second at 51 million and President Barack Obama, a distant third with 43 million.

Question #5: “I’m in the entertainment/creative industry and I do use my personal page. I don’t see the need to switch. Does the business page suggestion apply to me as well, and is there any particular benefit to me?”

| 401.353.4940 | donahuemodels.com | Trade Secrets | Volume 2, Issue 2 | 135

No doubt! Here are the top four reasons why having a business page would be of benefit to you. - Reason #1: What if Facebook goes away one day. All your friends will disappear into virtual space without any form of contact. That’s why smart businesses gather leads in the form of email addresses — so they can contact their community outside of Facebook. There are several types of apps that can be downloaded to help gather email addresses. Mail delivery services like Constant Contact and MailChimp are great resources that can help gather emails through contests, campaigns and other creative ways. - Reason # 2: Reach your target market by purchas- ing low cost ads - If you’re a local business, di- rect your ads to target customers within a 10-15 mile radius. The likes and potential customers are laser targeted. - Reason #3: Facebook Business Page Insights - even for non-technical people, these are really easy to understand! You can dig around and find out how specific posts are performing, the demographics of your fans, etc. You can also discover things like: • What posts are most popular and brought in the most likes?

• The reach of your posts and page engage ment of the page. • Post performance, and more. The best way to understand how this works is just to dive in. Plus, opening up a Facebook page is free! - Reason #4: Increase your Web traffic – A picture is worth a thousand words. The trick is to add a picture of what you would like to share along with a link back to your website. Photos of art, fashion, and beauty tips are perfect! Inspirational quotes are big hits too!

Question #6: “What are your thoughts on purchasing followers? A Do or a Don’t?” DON’T! Smart social media marketing is about creating relationships and offering helpful and useful suggestions to others. Sharing related information about your industry and being seen as an expert are key points. Essentially, you want your fans to convert into prospects, and prospects into paying clients. Lots of thumbs up (likes) may indicate popularity and be seen as a reflection of success. A bigger following must mean that you have a good business. But paid likes are not your target market. They are just for show. Getting

136 | Trade Secrets | 2014 Volume 2, Issue 2 | donahuemodels.com | 401.353.4940

organic likes will increase your fan base. In turn, those fans will help spread the good work that you are doing, and may ultimately become a customer. Question #7: “Are there any rules for using hashtags?” Long hashtags are hard to remember and can be easily mistyped, especially if tweeting on your phone. Make it simple and memorable. Also, be sure how to use a hashtag. Hashtags are used to identify people who are speaking about a topic or subject. Anyone who uses # [NameOfTagGoesHere] will pop up in other people’s tweets where the hashtag is used. Think of the cliché – birds of the same feather flock together. Question #8: “I have used Hootesuite, but are there other social media management sites that are comparable?” Yes, there are several other great social media management sites. You just need to find the one that best suits your needs and style.

Every business is different. Ultimately, your marketing strategy needs to be uniquely evaluated and measured based on your business model and marketing goals. The key is to keep calm, ask questions, and just do it!

You need to be where your target audience is. If they are on twitter then you need to be tweeting.

• Seesmic • SocialOomph • CoTweet • IFTTT • SpredFast

I usually pick one thing that I want to wear and build off of that. It can be a pair of socks, shoes, a pin or even a pocket scarf. I love mixing modern and vintage items together.” This look makes her feel:“Fun. Like the person I’ve always been. When I was a kid, I would watch my dad get ready for work, and I would ask him to make me a tie. I would wear it under my sweaters. No one knew it was there, but I had my style secret. I always felt more comfortable in Levi’s than in a dress. I’m not saying that I don’t wear them, but typically it isn’t my first choice.” Describing her style:“I have always painted myself into a very classic and conservative corner with my look. would secretly wear funky socks or a belt, that no one could really see, but I felt good knowing it was there. I met stylist Ignacio Quilles at the Artist Rebel Dandy event at RISD last year. He inspired me to release my secret, and wear what I wanted on the outside. Ignacio posed a question that really clicked with me, “what are you afraid of?” I thought isn’t that silly, out of all of the things in the world to fear -- I just want to wear a bow tie and fun pin. What’s the big deal, right? It was as if I needed permission to wear what I wanted. But once that clicked he just inspired me to have so much more fun and be creative with my wardrobe. I really feel like I am my authentic self – I feel good in my skin.” Our Wardrobe & Styling Director, Lisa Shorr’s comments: “Jen did so much right! First of all, she is expressing her authentic self - not dressing for others. Also - as a curvier woman - darker wash straight leg jeans are so flattering. A great way to dress is to select a focal point or inspiration piece, i.e. her pink and white polka dot bow tie - and then dress around it.” And that’s why you, Jen Dutra, are our stylish person of the month!

So, watch out folks! You never know when you might be spotted by...
