FROM THE EDITOR

Oh, it has been one heck of a month! StyleWeek, Rhode Island’s weeklong fashion event, just wrapped up three days before we went to press, and my team and I were in the midst of the madness all week. Primped, primed and dressed to the nines, we attended the five nights at The Providence Biltmore Hotel, and worked hard to cover the accessory showcase, the SEED student designer competition, hair and makeup backstage, the Phil Shaw installation, and of course the 15 runway shows! With the help of celebrity stylist and “The Rhode Show” regular, Jill Marinelli, we also picked the 10 most stylish people of the week. It was a fun effort and from the looks of it, well worth the work. Aside from all the StyleWeek coverage, we have a great selection of articles for you to enjoy. Our Italian contributor, Cinzia Antonelli, tells us about her first love – jeans, while this month’s talent spotlight focuses on Jon Korzeniowski, a pharmatcuetical rep and registered nurse by day, model and actor by night. He gives us insight into what makes him tick, his passions and life goals. This is our largest issue yet, and I sincerely hope that you will enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together. So, read to your heart’s content and…

Stay fabulous! Y

The Changing Business of Television

W By Chris Raffa

orking in the broadcast television business has been an exciting ride. When I landed my first job at the local ABC affiliate after graduating from college, I had no idea what I was in for. I was happy to be making money, but never really thought about “how much.” The most important thing to me was that I was “in the business,” and for this, I was grateful. This was a time when cable networks were slowly emerging and there was no World Wide Web to speak of. I started out as a studio camera operator and slowly climbed the ladder to “commercial producer.” The local production business was booming at this time! Advertisers needed local commercials produced, which required me to hire actors and models from Donahue Models. It was an exciting time and I loved concentrating on writing and producing the local spots. My challenge was to sell the client’s product, and to somehow “make it

different.” A great team of people

would work on one local commercial. We had a videographer who was well experienced with camera angles and lighting. When we were done shooting, I would sit with graphic artists who created the look I wanted, and experienced editors would make my vision come to life. Today, all of the same skills are needed, but you don’t have the luxury of working with a team of people. You are much more marketable if you can write, shoot, edit, have experience with graphics and even some sales experience. Clients still expect great work, and they still want the spot to stand out, but what has changed is the need to be a one-man band with many different skills. You need to create your own “brand” as a person and stand out among many who want to be in the same business as you. I often think about the old days when television station staffs were large and the job functions were specialized. But, I do enjoy our current times because of the constant challenge to be creative and to work independently. Also, I think this is an exciting time in television because of social media, and digital platforms are now a big part of the way we now communicate. The business of local television may have changed, but the excitement and creativity of the work is like no other.

IN THE GREEN ROOM

Playing Correspondent An Inside Look at Hosting Rhode Island’s Most Talked About Girls’ Night Out Event Out” event at the luxurious Belle Mer in Newport, I responded instantaneously, “I’d love to!” One of the degrees I obtained from the University of Rhode Island, is a Bachelor of Arts in journalism, which you already know from reading my bio, right? Eh, em! More specifically, I tailored my classes to broadcast journalism.

By Julie Dawson Photos courtesy of Give & Glam From a very young age, I’ve always felt “at home” being on camera or in front of a live audience, engaging and entertaining people. However, it may come as a surprise for many to hear that the smallest state in the nation is in a top 40 market alking up a for television news. Translation: out of all the television stations in the country, pathway made Rhode Island news outlets rank in the top 40! So, where am I going with this? from seashells, It is very rare, if not impossible, to be hired as an entry-level reporter in Rhode I could smell the salty air of the Newport Harbor and feel a gentle breeze from the ocean tousle my hair. The sun begins to set over the water as sailboats glide over small wakes in the water. Entering through a glass door on the façade of Belle Mer, my high heels found their way to graze the pink carpet with a backdrop of sponsors that are always found at popular Hollywood events. The high ceilings support crystal chandeliers that hang above a ballroom full of Rhode Island’s top local designers and fashionistas all dressed to the nines. Where can you find all of this under one roof to support a great cause? None other than the third annual “Give and Glam Girl’s Night Out”, Rhode Island’s most looked-forward to beauty and shopping event!

Island without seeking opportunities elsewhere in lower markets. Any chance I can get to put my face on the camera, believe me, I take it, especially if it helps support a great cause; $5 from each ticket sold at Give and Glam goes directly to Hasbro Children’s Hospital! As the host of the event, I greeted guests on the glamorous pink carpet and asked them questions as the paparazzi would at a Hollywood event. Here are some of my favorite answers to questions throughout the night: “How would you define glam?” A: “Anything you have a passion for. I think if you are doing something you have a passion for, you are glamorous either way.” “How would you define your perfect girl’s night out?” A: “Oh, this is it! Shopping, drinking, no husbands…” (friend interrupts), “Shhh, don’t say that!” As for my favorite question and answer for the night?

“Will you be shopping around for anything tonight?” A: “Shopping and drinking, awesome!” “May be a dangerous combination?” A: “Oh, my gosh! I think in the mall they should serve cocktails because women would spend a lot more money!”

I am both honored and thankful to have been asked to host such a grand and upscale event! For me, this was an unforgettable experience that I hope will lead to additional opportunities. And who knows, maybe they will ask me to host the event again next year? Hint, hint!

THE COSMETIC COUNTER

Fall Makeup Trends

By Becky DiStefano Model: Alexa Babcock

I

t’s that magical time of year, where the leaves change colors, the kids go back to school and fall makeup trends abound! This year is all about color! The summer look was all about being natural, having light coverage and using BB creams, along with peachy lips and light smoky eyes. What you will see this fall are deeper colors and tones, along with heavier coverage for the skin. Gracing the runways are strong eyes and lips, so I am going to explain how you can bring that look into your everyday life!

The matte trend is popular for the fall, and luckily, every skin tone can wear this look! Flawless skin is colorblind, and using a primer along with a foundation that matches your skin tone with translucent powder will give you this coveted look. Translucent powder is colorless so it won’t show up, it just sets the look. Experimenting with makeup trends is a lot of fun, but it’s also important to be yourself, and stick to either a strong eye or a strong lip. While both together work on the runway, it doesn’t always work that way when it comes to street style. Choose what you want to stand out and make it happen. Your best trend is to always be you!

8 | Trade Secrets | 2013 Volume 1, Issue 5 | donahuemodels.com | 401.353.4940

Eyes Go with a strong smoky eye, but you can veer off from grays and blacks and dive into plums, purples and blues. If you are feeling daring enough, go with maroons or reds. Smoky eyes are perfect for every season, but fall and winter really bring them out to be darker, rich colors. As far as eye color is concerned, reds/maroons look amazing on green or hazel eyes, while browns really play up blue eyes. You can also go for a monochromatic look using browns on brown eyes, greens on green eyes, or blues on blue eyes. A gray/black smoky eye looks good on all eye colors.

Lips Lips make a statement this season with dark colors and bright stains. Go bold with dark reds or browns, or add a pop of color with pinks and mauves.

Skin For people with skin that doesn’t always look flawless, you can add more coverage in the fall and winter months. Adding translucent powder to your foundation will give you that porcelain finish you desire. Add a touch of blush to the apples of the cheeks and you’re ready!

THE COSMETIC COUNTER

THE BATTLE YOU CAN NEVER WIN: The Do’s & Don’ts

of Acne, Pimples, and Blackheads

A

cne can appear in many different forms, for different types of people. Age, environment, and diet are just a few major factors in acne-prone skin. Here is a list of Do’s and Don’ts that will help you banish any signs of acne!

By Hayley Klaudt

DO’S 1. Do wash your face every night. For a lot of people, this seems to be the hardest part, but it’s the easiest fix! When you forget to wash your face before bed, you let hours of dirt and oil build-up clog your pores. Then, a new layer of sweat and dirt builds on top while you’re sleeping. Gross, right? 2. Do wash your makeup brushes on a regular basis. Breakouts occur frequently when we use dirty makeup brushes on our face. The dirt and oil from our skin builds-up on the bristles. When they aren’t clean, you’re spreading the bacteria on your face every morning. 3. Do invest in some quality skincare! Here are some of my favorite products:

Have a few pimples here and there? Give these a try: • Mario Badescu Drying Lotion 1oz/$17. One drop on a pimple or whitehead will dry it up and heal it virtually overnight. • Kiehls Herbal Spot Treatment .5oz/$18. Dries and diminishes blackheads, whiteheads, and acne quickly while helping prevent new ones from appearing. Do you have blackheads or clogged pores? Try these: • Philosophy Oxygen Peel Kit/$56. A peel that will suck all the clogged dirt and oils right out of your pores. • Mario Badescu Silver Powder 1oz/$12. When combined with water, this powder forms into a thick paste that is then pressed into clogged areas with blackheads. It flakes off after 10 minutes and pulls out the blackheads as it comes off. • Kiehls Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque .5oz/$23. Intensively cleanses skin to eliminate dirt, oils, and minimize pores.

10 | Trade Secrets | 2013 Volume 1, Issue 5 | donahuemodels.com | 401.353.4940

DON’TS 1. Don’t touch your face during the day! I know it’s tempting and we all do it, but that’s one of the biggest culprits of minor breakouts. The dirt and oils from your hands cause bacteria to grow and form on your skin. 2. Don’t try to pop your own pimples. They will heal faster if you leave them alone! Picking at them will only make them worse, which can leave scabs and scars in their place. Would you rather have a pimple for a couple days or a scar for a couple years? You decide! Need some tricks to help cover breakouts in the meantime? Concealing acne isn’t as hard as it seems! It’s all about using the right tools and the right products. At work I use the following tricks to conceal breakouts: • Use a fine tipped brush, something that’s small enough to conceal the head of the pimple, but not bigger than the pimple itself. I like to use either MAC’s

number 211 brush or Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Brush. • Use a concealer with a yellow-based hue to it. If the formula has too much pink in it, you will end up making the area look worse. This goes for all skin tones. Whether you have warm or cool tones, you want a concealer with a creamy texture so it will blend into the skin easier. Some of my favorite concealers are: MAC Prolong Wear and Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Compact. • Work the brush into the concealer so that you have a generous amount on the brush tip. Then, dab the concealer lightly at the head of the pimple, but not the skin surrounding it! • Use a sponge to press the concealer into the pimple and blend out the edges. And voila, it’s gone! You can follow-up with a foundation to even out the skin tone, but you shouldn’t have to, if the pimple is concealed correctly. • Use a light setting powder and dust all over the face to set the makeup so it lasts all day.

IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN JUST A FEW PIMPLES AND NEED HELP CONCEALING ALL OVER THE FACE, USE THE FOLLOWING TRICKS: 1) Smashbox makes a great color correcting primer to use under your makeup. It has a green hue that helps cancel out serious redness on the skin. Apply a pea size amount onto the areas where redness occurs, not all over the face, and pat it lightly into the skin- don’t rub! This will help to even out the skin before you put your makeup on. 2) Use a liquid or cream foundation with a sponge and pat it onto the skin. This will add extra coverage and won’t be too abrasive on the skin. 3) Use a light setting powder to seal everything onto the skin so you won’t have to worry about touch-ups during the day. I hope that these tips help you to overcome your blemish battles. Remember that it will take time, as skin won’t clear up overnight. If you are patient and follow these simple Do’s and Don’ts, you will notice a drastic change in the long run. Good luck!

OUT OF THE CLOSET

StyleWeek’s Most Stylish By the Trade Secrets Team with Jill Marinelli Photos by Valencio Small, Jennifer Carter & Lauren Trad

For every Rhode Islander, StyleWeek has become the epitome of all things fashion and style. Twice a year, all attention falls to the little city of Providence, and each evening, the Providence Biltmore Hotel inhales and exhales a flock of models, stylists, designers, makeup artists, journalists, photographers, local TV personalities, and spectators all coming together to experience a slice of the latest trends in clothing and accessories. Every season, the 17th and 18th floors of the hotel are packed with people dressed to the nines, exhibiting their unique take on what style means to them. As the week approached, we came up with an ambitious idea: to find the most stylish attendees over the five-day event, and we invited personal stylist, and friend of the magazine, Jill Marinelli, to join in the fun. Each night we scoped out, stalked, pointed at, debated over, selected, interviewed and photographed (in that order) one male and one female guest whom we felt brought a certain “flair” to their look. Here’s our list of top picks for StyleWeek.

JON KORZENIOWSKI M.S., RN

He’s aware of all the latest trends and he’s not afraid to wear them! When he wants to look and feel his best, there is a pair of straight leg True Religion jeans and a fitted V-neck T-shirt in his closet with his name all over it. Born in northern Rhode Island, Jon Korzeniowski started acting when a friend, who was in a series being filmed in Rhode Island, called him to start as an extra on the TV show, “Brotherhood.” 401.353.4940 | donahuemodels.com | Issue 5, Volume 1 2013 | Trade Secrets | 19

“I had taken acting classes and built sets at the University of Rhode Island,” Korzeniowski says, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, before obtaining a master’s from Salve Regina University. TS: “Do you have a day job?” JK: “Yes! I work for one of the best companies in the world (Johnson & Johnson) as a full-time Pharmaceutical Rep. I have also been a Psychiatric RN for years.”

TS: “How long have you been acting and modeling?” JK: “Five years.” TS: “What has been your most memorable modeling or acting job so far?” JK: “I would say acting in “27 Dresses” and being Katherine Heigel’s date in the plantation wedding scene. I was able to speak with her for three hours during the filming and got to know her a bit.” In addition to “27 Dresses,” Jon was in “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” as Matthew McConaughey’s groomsman and “The Lonely Maiden,” as Christopher Walken’s shipping worker. TS: “What was your most recent modeling or acting job?” JK: “I shot a great scene in a Michael Corrente film called “Backmask” to be released this summer. I played an orderly restraining the star during a scene and had to give her an injection. My last modeling job was a shoot for Honeywell.” TS: “It looks like you’ve had the privilege of working closely with some pretty big names. Who’s your favorite actor or model?” JK: “I really look up to Richard Jenkins because he is a local guy who made it big and still lives in Rhode Island. I see him in my town on a regular basis. He stops and talks to everyone and is a down-to-earth regular Joe; yet he was up for an Academy Award a couple of years ago!” TS: “If you made it really big, what would you do with your first million?” JK: “I would definitely pay off my mortgage, my brother’s mortgage, and give my parents a couple hundred ‘K’ to play with.” We’re sure his folks would appreciate that, and it wouldn’t surprise us if he does accomplish that goal. We asked how he would describe himself; this divorced father of three responds, “I’m very motivated, driven, honest and compassionate. I’m a hard worker and love to share with those around me. My kids and family mean the world to me.” TS: “And how would your friends describe you?” JK: “Funny, a social butterfly, trustworthy, level-headed, LUCKY!” (He laughs). 401.353.4940 | donahuemodels.com | Issue 5, Volume 1 2013 | Trade Secrets | 23

He also loves to laugh. A lot.

hat is she most proud of? “Hands down…beating cancer,” she responds and she hopes to help others with her story.

As a teenager, Alexa Lozowski said she took everything for granted. “I know I am young, but facing the fact that you may die is life-changing. I see life very differently now. Everything changed for me; the sky is bluer, love is stronger and every day is a gift. I really try to keep that in perspective now.”

TS: “That must be something people are surprised to learn about you.” AL: “I would have to agree - people are quite surprised to know that I am only 16. I have always been the tallest in any group. I used to be insecure about my height, but now it is a big advantage, especially since I love being in front of the camera.” TS: “What were you feeling when you decided to start the company? Was it daunting?” AL: “I would definitely say my biggest fear was rejection. It’s always scary designing something, because it is a reflection of yourself and it’s scary knowing people will judge you.”

In April of 2011, just three months after losing her grandmother to pancreatic cancer, she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma - a form of blood cancer. “I have always had an artistic flare,” she explains, “our first charm was our Angel Wing Bangle; we made it in honor of my Nana. It’s part of our signature collection, Angels and Survivors, and our biggest seller. It reminds us to celebrate life to the fullest everyday. You just never know.” Born in Orange County, Florida, this jewelry designer is - surprise, surprise - a sophomore, living in Rhode Island, running her own company and hoping to get into professional modeling. all it “style on steroids, but like any fashion week, StyleWeek SS 2014 featured 15 fashion shows in five days. With three shows each night, scheduled between 7 and 9 p.m., there was a lot to see.

bandeau and relaxed fitting high-waisted sheer white pants. For hair and makeup, the models wore a very natural hairstyle consisting of soft, tousled waves, and a natural, glowing face with thick, bold eyebrows.

Each evening started off with the accessory showcase and cocktail hour at 5:30, offering guests and the general public the opportunity to shop from a wide array of accessories, and even opportunities to win a spa treatment, while sipping on cocktails and meeting up with friends - both old and new. We were there to cover it all, and encapsulate the highlights of a very busy week.

MONDAY PINI With 13 pieces in his collection, Nick Pini opened the entire event, and his designs can only be described as a vision in white. From structured mini dresses to flowy tops, hot shorts to high-low skirts, each garment was tediously hand-crafted and embellished with beadwork and sequins. One of the most interesting pieces from his collection was an oversized neutral-tone fur coat with three quarter length sleeves paired with a white 30 | Trade Secrets | 2013 Volume 1, Issue 5 | donahuemodels.com | 401.353.4940

Chances R Designs

Gregory Paul

Chances R Designs by Toni Spaziano is a labor of love. Showing a 22 piece colletion, Spaziano’s line gave a “modern meets retro” vibe with cat eye sunglasses, 60s beehive hair, fringed micro-mini skirts, bell sleeves, cutout necklines and spiked heels.

The last designer of the night created 10 pieces for his collection. A common theme for his designs included one-shoulder or strapless knee-length dresses that were grey, white, and black tones. Many of the outfits incorporated a splash of lime green color, whether it was a skirt or a high-waisted tied belt. The audience cheered for one of the last pieces in the collection, an eye-catching lime green dress with a high neckline and plunging back with black textured straps.

The last piece in the collection left the audience in awe when the model strolled down the runway wearing angel wings and a stunning white floor-length gown with a corset top and lofty feathered bottom. With the vintage, mod feel, the models’ makeup consisted of dramatic smokey eyes and winged out eyeliner. She featured two different looks for hair; an exaggerated top bun with an added hairpiece to create another bun on top, and a half up/ half down look with heavy volume.

The hair and makeup was beautifully done, with the hair pulled into a sleek top bun close to the hair line, and a dark, dramatically lined eye for makeup.

TUESDAY Stephanie Kolanko We loved Stephanie Kolanko’s Spring 2014 collection. Most of the outfits were made from soft floral patterned fabric that put us in an island resort frame-of-mind. Each look, adorned with a floral head-wrap, was vibrant and flowing. From wide leg pants to floor length skirts and dresses, the entire collection was fun and whimsical.

Stetkiewicz by Amy Stetkiewicz One after the other, soft muted tones and impeccably tailored modern looks from mini dresses to vegan leather shorts sauntered down the runway. Stetkiewicz’s collection was full of ready-to-wear pieces that flatter a woman’s silhouette. One of the top looks was a coral colored minidress with underarm gold chain accents; a sexy ready-towear look for date night or a night on the town.

NoMy Style Unique in her field, Sauro designs clothing for the modern plus-size woman. Her collection featured color blocking and ruching for the curvier figure. The line included swimwear styles designed with dark tones and cut to camouflage trouble areas, a flowing maxi dress with a solid blue cotton top, a flowing floral print maxi skirt, as well as a man’s oxford-style dress with a fun turban for whimsy. According to Alisha, her outfits were comfortable and flattering. “Walking the line between mainstream model size and plus size,” she said “it was nice to feel comfortable and fashionable. I loved the accessories, they were a great touch; the oversized bow ribbon headbands were fun and the beaded jewelry gave it a nice day-to-night transition,” Newton said.

WEDNESDAY Kelly Zogheb

Evan Michael Industry

If light pink is your favorite color, then you will love Kelly Zoghe’s collection. From crop tops to three-quarter length sleeve collared shirts, and velvet tank tops with embellished necklines to knee-length fitted skirts lined with pink sequins, each model was drenched from head to toe in pink! Zogheb created 13 pieces in her collection, each incorporated pink sequins, whether it was on the sleeves of a blouse, or an entire skirt. The overall look of her collection was sweet, delicate, and feminine, and so was hair and makeup.

The Evan Michael Industry collection made boring black and white look sexy and edgy. The collection of 13 pieces played with the mixture of lace capes and gowns, to leather fringed tops and thigh-high multi-slit skirts. His designs were modern and brought massive sex appeal to the runway by having the models wear seductive dark makeup and slicked-back hair. Evan Michael Industry’s eye-popping collection showed how feminine and masculine qualities could coexist together for an outfit.

To compliment her pretty, pink fashions, she sent her models down the runway with a loose, classic french braid that transitioned into a very current fishtail braid. This hair look was our favorite of the night because it was completely wearable, whether on the runway, on the street, or even in the gym. For makeup, Kelly’s models had a monochromatic look with soft pink eye shadow, lips, and cheeks, matching the pink clothing in her collection.

To comlement that “tougher”, edgier look, the models wore their hair straight down, and slicked back. Makeup featured a clean and somewhat “dewy” face, with a dark, smoky eye and natural lip. Cheeks were moderately contoured.

Alistair Archer Alistair Archer’s collection was both colorful and unique. Each of the 13 pieces in the collection incorporated multi-tones of color, patterns, and color blocking. Upon closer examination, some of the fabrics appear to have a paint-splattered effect. Each piece in the collection was either a midi or knee-length dress or skirt, paired with bright and bold accessories. The entire collection was bright, youthful, and refreshing, and to complement his collection, the models strutted down the runway with a natural, glowing, fresh face. Cheeks were very contoured, while the eyes were kept very natural, but the lips popped with an orangy-red lipstick. There were two different hairstyles in this line up; one was loose with soft, flowy, waves, and the other was a sleek, low ponytail.

THURSDAY Jillian Banta

Karla Marie

We found Jillian Banta’s line fresh and feminine with great styles and beautiful colors. Many of the outfits were made from silky fabrics, loosely flowing around the models as they moved, while others were tailored and fitted to flatter the figure. Lovely beaded embellisments around the necklines and waistbands gave it a modern feel and could be seen in most of her pieces.

The splash of bright colors was magnificent in Karla Marie’s collection. The mix of fabrics and prints give her designs a unique look – tribal and exotic, with a middle-eastern theme. From flowy floor length skirts and crop tops to cuffed pants and fun peek-a-boo cut-outs, this was a bold look for the confident woman looking to add some audaciousness to her wardrobe.

Susan Troy Classic, sophisticated and extremely chic would be the only way to describe Susan Troy’s creations. Her collection was finished with beautiful details and a combination of fabrics that gave the entire line an extraordinary flow. Her hand-dyed linen and silk organza had a beautiful contrast – and gave a unique dimension to the dresses. The models were adorned with beautiful handmade eco-fashion art accessories by jewelry designers, Restored by Design. To add to the vision, sheer white veils ensconsed their heads propped up by a carefully placed piece of twig. An exceptionally beautiful ready-to-wear line

FRIDAY Phil Shaw Installation

Yellow Clover by Sarah Elizabeth

Before the runway shows commenced, guests were introduced to a fascinating avante grade collection through the art of dance. Through leaps, lunges and twirls, the boldly painted performers displayed Mr. Shaw’s Spring collection, in the round, to the very intrigued audience. Spring 2014 is going to be bright!

You know a designer is a master when she sends her models down the runway with the illusion of shoes expertly painted on their feet. Each model strutted “on their toes” presenting a line that was sheer, feminine and ready-to-wear. The breath-catcher was a dress with a black and white openbacked bodice, and a full red skirt that swirled around the model’s legs as she sashayed her way down the runway and back.

Jess Abernethy

Jonathan Joseph Peters

Everything old looked new again on Jess Abernethy’s collection. Earthy florals mixed with modern sheer elevated each vintage look to suit today’s woman. The expertly tied head-wraps were reminiscent of one of our favorite stars Lucille Ball. Her final two looks featured a very wearable bold pattern of circles in various shades of brown, yellow and red - one as a top paired with white shorts, the other a flowing sideways muliti-layed mullet dress.

The audience never knows what to expect when seasoned designer, and Project Runway alum, Jonathan Joseph Peters’ models hit the runway. His show opened with the popular song “Working Nine to Five” by country singer Dolly Parton and the audience was treated to 12 exaggeratedly ‘professional’ women wearing bold purples, sharp greens, vibrant yellows all tailored to create a distinctive look that only Peters can create. Funky House of Cache spectacles complemented and bedazzled while overstated hairstyles with side buns completed the look.

FROM THE INSIDE, OUT

Healthy Living: A Few Tips for Keeping Life in Balance Fun: Whether it’s taking a cooking class, apple picking, taking a trip, or going fishing - having fun is just plain good for the soul. All work and no play, as they say, makes life feel dull. Try planning a fun thing each month - maybe you can check out a new art exhibit, learn to knit, go golf a course you haven’t played before or visit a town in your state that you haven’t been to yet. New adventures broaden our horizons, expand our minds and nurture our creative selves. By Hillary Adams

S

eptember marks the end of summer and the beginning of hectic schedules for most of us. Work projects, committee meetings, social obligations, and the kids’ after school activities often leave us all running around and feeling frazzled. To avoid getting overwhelmed and burnt out, stop and make time to unwind and recharge your batteries by following these tips to help keep you, and your life, in balance. Pick one, or several, and schedule them just like you would a meeting, to ensure you take time for you. A good night’s sleep: Insomnia is the most frustrating thing. Ever. Between computers, smart phones and televisions, we spend a lot of time staring at blue screens. Scientists have discovered that all these blue screens can mess with our sleep cycles. One to two hours before bed, turn off all screens and do something to unwind: make your healthy lunch for tomorrow, have a bath, stretch that lower back, read a book or the paper (just don’t use that Kindle or Blackberry!). Lists and journals make me very happy, so if I have a lot to do or a lot on my mind, I write in my journal and make an action plan for the next day. If it’s all out on paper, it can’t be on spin cycle in your head! 401.353.4940 | donahuemodels.com | Issue 5, Volume 1 2013 | Trade Secrets | 41

Exercise: Whether it’s taking a dance or spin class, running or swimming, or training with weights, working out helps us to manage stress. Most people report that morning workouts make them better prepared to face the challenges of the day. End of the day workouts can be a great way to decompress from a frustrating day but can also cause insomnia for some people. If you are having trouble winding down at night, switch to a morning workout or try something soothing like yoga in the evening.

Model: Emily Costantino

Healthy eating: Being on the go means your body needs good food for energy but often this is the first thing we throw out the window when we are stressed. Taking 10 minutes before bed to pack a lunch will help you avoid the afternoon slump or turning to fast food or vending machine snacks to get through the day. A yummy sandwich, a piece of fruit, some nuts and a yogurt will help keep you going. Find yourself working late or with a long commute? Emergency snacks like a protein bar or a small bag of nuts and pretzels will stash easily in your purse, briefcase or carry-on if you travel often.

Doctor appointments: Fall is a great time to double check your calendars and make sure that appointment you made last year for December with the dermatologist and your annual physical is in your phone, the calendar on the fridge and your computer calendar- whatever you have to do so you don’t forget and end up waiting another four months. Your health is everything and ruling out any concerns takes one more stress off that little spot in your mind that’s so good at worrying.

Model: Wendy Lewis

Unwind and restore: Find something that helps you relax both body and mind such as a yoga class, a massage, a meditation practice, a hot bath or sauna. Perhaps a walk on the beach or in the woods or just listening to your favorite tunes will help. The important thing is to unplug and recharge yourself. If I don’t get to one of these items or I’m still struggling to fall asleep, I make a gratitude list. It’s kind of like counting your blessings instead of counting sheep. I’m grateful for the awesome sunset, I’m grateful for friends and family, I’m grateful I could make a yummy dinner tonight, and so on…. this should give you a nice, warm, relaxed feeling of peace and contentment- don’t be surprised if you fall asleep in the middle!

Hydration: Did I mention the air starts to dry out in fall? Keeping up with hydration will help keep your skin supple not flaky. And can also help sinuses especially if you are prone to the dreaded sinus infection once the indoor heat comes on. A reusable water bottle at work or a mug for herbal tea helps you hydrate on the job. If you were a weekend warrior on the field or at the pub, coconut water has lots of electrolytes and can help you revive.

Skincare: If, like me, you use a lot of heavy duty, waterproof sunblock for outdoor time, you may find yourself with clogged pores and some irritated skin particularly as the weather gets drier in Fall. It’s the perfect time to get a facial to cleanse the pores, address sun damage, and help skin transition to the drier months. And fellas, if facials just aren’t your thing, check out the hot shave at the barber shop. More and more places offer them. The hot towel treatment before your shave will loosen stubborn facial hair and the straight razor shave is as smooth as you can get. Friends and Family: Taking time to catch up with loved ones is so important – check out the farmers’ market with your folks, if you all love to cook or meet friends for a meal or a game night. Are you far away from your nearest and dearest? Try Skype - it’s a great way to stay connected when you are far apart. My best friend and I are many states apart right now, so we have wine and cheese nights via Skype and it’s a wonderful way to catch up. Regardless of where and how busy you are, be sure to find a way to stay connected to the people most important to you – and to plan fun and relaxing ways to unwind, de-stress, and maintain some balance in your life! 401.353.4940 | donahuemodels.com | Issue 5, Volume 1 2013 | Trade Secrets | 43

A WINK FROM...Italy

Blue Jeans, My By Cinzia Antonelli

T

here’s a famous Italian saying, “You never forget your first love.” I think it’s true! The first time I saw my first love, I was about 7-years-old. And no, it wasn’t Prince Charming, it was something much better - a pair of blue jeans! Yes, girls, you read that right. For me, it was love at first sight. I saw celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and James Dean wearing them in the movie, “Flowers for a Ghost.” It was sensual and bold, like only they could wear it. Then, the film “Grease” and TV show “Happy Days” came along. Almost all the actors wore jeans – even pairing them with a denim jacket! By this point, I wanted my own pair in the worst way. Unfortunately for me, it was a love unfulfilled because I grew up in a strict Italian household and my mother, who decided on my outfits until I was 15, would not allow me to wear them. In her opinion, jeans “didn’t suit a little well-mannered girl like me.” 44 | Trade Secrets | 2013 Volume 1, Issue 5 | donahuemodels.com | 401.353.4940

So, I begged, pleaded and promised my mother I would never wear jeans on Sundays, or on special holidays like Christmas or Easter. Finally, I wore her down and she gave in. So, at the age of 13, she bought me my first pair of blue jeans. They were beautiful!

Jeans are a must-have for every season; I don’t think they will ever go out of fashion. For the fall and winter seasons, designers are re-purposing denim in several different ways. On the runway we can see that Phillips Lim enriched denim with military badges for an “army” style. And while Victoria Beckham designed a washed-out and super-skinny look, Chanel transformed jeans as if they were sumptuous pieces of jewelry.

That was many, many moons ago, and I haven’t stopped loving or wearing my jeans. It’s a part of me. When I put them on I feel more secure and strong, as if I am able to cope better with every situation; for me it’s Jeans are versatile pieces of your wardrobe that can be a veritable ‘amour.’ re-interpreted decade after decade.
