I salute you and our local Chapter of the AOH for their sponsorship and organization! I also salute parade chairman, John Ryan as well. This celebration of St. Patrick’s Day with the weekend parade and luncheon truly celebrates with joy our great community here in Hampton Bays! It celebrates our Irish Heritage highlighting the great history, culture, traditions and customs of the Irish people and their contributions to civilization. All Irish and those who are “Irish” by desire this week truly celebrate together! As your pastor here at Saint Rosalie’s I am so happy for your St. Patrick’s Pantry promotionasking those watching the parade to bring non-perishable foods to the parade to assist the feeding of the hungry through the St. Rosalie’s Food pantry. What a great sign of witness and example by the leadership of the Ancient Order of Hibernians! I am happy to congratulate and salute Lars Clemensen as Grand Marshal of the Parade. I know Lars has done such a wonderful job as Superintendent of the Hampton Bays Schools. I am aware of his great contributions to the community in support of the civic and educational as well as fraternal organizations in our town. He has done an outstanding job of teaching and leading by example our young people of our town about patriotism. Lars Clemensen is a very caring and welcoming leader in our community. God Bless you Lars and Kim. Again, congratulations and kudos to Lars Clemensen on his selection as Grand Marshal for the 2017 Saint Patrick’s Day parade! The Ancient Order of Hibernians The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) in America was officially formed in New York on May 4, 1836 at St. James Church. It was born in anger centuries earlier in Ireland, after successive invasions of those who tried to master the Irish and alter their Gaelic lifestyle. Inflexible opponents like the Vikings were fought until their power was broken; others, like the Normans, were absorbed until they became as Irish as the Irish themselves. Through it all, the Irish maintained their language, traditions and religion. Today’s AOH, with its motto “Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity, is the most recent link in the evolution of ancient Irish societies. Organized in Ireland for the purpose of defending Gaelic values and protecting Church and clergy, it is the successor to the secret societies of old. The early AOH in America remained a secret society, and little is known of its activities except that it provided a monetary stipend to immigrants who arrived as members in good standing from the Irish Order and assisted them in obtaining jobs and social services. Quite naturally, the early AOH divisions were nurseries for the preservation of Irish culture and traditions in America. In large measure due to the significant contributions of the Irish in defending the Union during America’s Civil War, the AOH became stronger. Also, as the militant support of their Church dwindled, the AOH shifted its purpose to charitable activities in support of the Church’s missions, community service, and the promotion and preservation of their Irish cultural heritage in America. Today, they stand not only as the oldest Catholic lay organization in America, but as the largest Irish society in the world with divisions in Ireland and 49 of the United States. The AOH is partitioned into divisions, county and state boards, and is governed by a national board elected every two years. The division is the basic unit in the Order, and membership in a division is membership in the Order. Even county, state, and national officers maintain membership in a local Division. Annual dances, concerts, and parades sponsored by all levels of the Order raise millions for charity, while providing a showcase for positive contributions of the Irish to every walk of American life. Divisions usually support local charities within their geographic areas, while sending a portion of their monies to higher levels for support of state, national, and international charities.
Hampton Bays Michael Collins Division 11 In April 2001 the Michael Collins Division 11 of the AOH was formed in Hampton Bays. The formation can be credited to Dan Heaney, the division’s first president and 15 years charter members who undertook a Shamrock Degree in May 2011. This charter nucleus has grown to over l00 members. The Division holds their monthly meetings on the first Thursday of every month at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Hampton Bays. A Ladies AOH was formed and is now active with 80 members. The ambitious undertaking of hosting a St Patrick’s Day Parade is a testament to the enthusiasm and energy of this Irish fraternal organization. Lars Clemensen
Lars Clemensen is our Superintendent of Schools in Hampton Bays. Currently in his 7th year as superintendent and 11th as a school leader in Hampton Bays, Lars and his wife are also lifelong Baymen. Lars is from Hampton Bays, having attended school in the district he now leads until 8th grade at which point he moved to Texas. A graduate of the University of Texas, Lars taught in Paterson, New Jersey and obtained his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership at Seton Hall University. He lives in Hampton Bays with his wife, Kim, a music teacher on the East End of Long Island and they have one son, Ryland.
After teaching, Lars ran Teach For America-New Jersey, an organization dedicated to closing the learning gap in low-income urban and rural neighborhoods in Newark and Camden. In 2006, he returned home to Hampton Bays as the founding principal of the new Hampton Bays Middle School and has been the Superintendent of Schools since 2010. As superintendent, Lars focused his priorities on building relationships in the community and ensuring that every student arrives at Graduation Day with a set of choices for what to do after high school. Since he became superintendent in 2010, the district has introduced a college anti-remediation program that has increased the ability for our college freshman to get right into classes within their major by 40 percent. The pre-kindergarten program was expanded by 75 percent and now also includes a component for high school junior and senior “apprentice teachers” to come in and support the teacher, all the while learning about the profession of education. For students looking to enter the service industry, the two-year Culinary Arts program will arm kids with a food manager’s license and advanced standing in the Suffolk County College Culinary Program. Since 2006, Hampton Bays Schools have more than doubled their offerings for Advanced Placement, college-level coursework and, in partnership with our state universities, kids have the opportunity to take certain high school classes and earn up to 68 college credits! Opportunity for all kids is the key to make sure that we have a strong community where students graduate and become productive members of society. Since 2011, the school district has hosted 46 ceremonies to recognize local veterans. The program’s goal is to create a “living classroom” where students meet real-life Hampton Bays heroes. Currently, Lars serves is the President-elect of the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association and, in local community life, serves as Vice President of the Hampton Bays Chamber of Commerce and Treasurer of the Rotary Club of Hampton Bays. Despite his Scandinavian name, Lars’ grandmother, the former Kathleen Cunningham Smith was born in Tuam, County Galway in Ireland. She lived for just a few months in County Mayo before immigrating to New York City in 1924.
