I salute you and our local Chapter of the AOH for their sponsorship and organization! I also salute parade chairman, John Ryan as well. This celebration of St. Patrick’s Day with the weekend parade and luncheon truly celebrates with joy our great community here in Hampton Bays! It celebrates our Irish Heritage highlighting the great history, culture, traditions and customs of the Irish people and their contributions to civilization. All Irish and those who are “Irish” by desire this week truly celebrate together! As your pastor here at Saint Rosalie’s I am so happy for your St. Patrick’s Pantry promotionasking those watching the parade to bring non-perishable foods to the parade to assist the feeding of the hungry through the St. Rosalie’s Food Pantry. What a great sign of witness and example by the leadership of the Ancient Order of Hibernians! We congratulate Fergus Scully the 2018 Grand Marshal who watched his father, Padraig Scully, lead marchers in the Saint Patrick’s Day parade down O’Connell Square in Laois County. How fitting that Fergus his son 40 years later is leading us in Hampton Bays, Long Island! Fergus now lives with his wife, Liz Scully, in Hampton Bays. They have two children: Caelinn and Saorla. He has been a member of the Hampton Bays AOH since moving to the hamlet. Fergus is a familiar voice as the Master of Ceremonies at the AOH’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade which has become one of the East End’s largest and well-attended events. “There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into the parade that people don’t know about,” Mr. Scully said, noting that the parade costs an average of $40,000 annually. “People show up and it’s a parade and it’s great, but we’re working year-round.” Fergus is instrumental in everything we do in our decisions of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. As Chaplain of the AOH, Michael Collins Division 11, and pastor of our Parish of Saint Rosalie’s in Hampton Bays, I am happy to congratulate and ask God to Bless you Fergus, Liz and children on Fergus Scully’s selection as Grand Marshal for the 2018 Saint Patrick’s Day parade! I would like to leave you with this Irish Prayer for all to read: May God give you... For every storm, a rainbow, For every tear, a smile, For every care, a promise, And a Blessing in each trial. For every problem life sends, A faithful friend to share, For every sigh, a sweet song, And an answer to each prayer. The Ancient Order of Hibernians The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) in America was officially formed in New York on May 4, 1836 at St. James Church. It was born in anger centuries earlier in Ireland, after successive invasions of those who tried to master the Irish and alter their Gaelic lifestyle. Inflexible opponents like the Vikings were fought until their power was broken; others, like the Normans, were absorbed until they became as Irish as the Irish themselves. Through it all, the Irish maintained their language, traditions and religion. Today’s AOH, with its motto “Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity, is the most recent link in the evolution of ancient Irish societies. Organized in Ireland for the purpose of defending Gaelic values and protecting Church and clergy, it is the successor to the secret societies of old. The early AOH in America remained a secret society, and little is known of its activities except that it provided a monetary stipend to immigrants who arrived as members in good standing from the Irish Order and assisted them in obtaining jobs and social services. Quite naturally, the early AOH divisions were nurseries for the preservation of Irish culture and traditions in America. In large measure due to the significant contributions of the Irish in defending the Union during America’s Civil War, the AOH became stronger. Also, as the militant support of their Church dwindled, the AOH shifted its purpose to charitable activities in support of the Church’s missions, community service, and the promotion and preservation of their Irish cultural heritage in America. Today, they stand not only as the oldest Catholic lay organization in America, but as the largest Irish society in the world with divisions in Ireland and 49 of the United States. The AOH is partitioned into divisions, county and state boards, and is governed by a national board elected every two years. The division is the basic unit in the Order, and membership in a division is membership in the Order. Even county, state, and national officers maintain membership in a local Division. Annual dances, concerts, and parades sponsored by all levels of the Order raise millions for charity, while providing a showcase for positive contributions of the Irish to every walk of American life. Divisions usually support local charities within their geographic areas, while sending a portion of their monies to higher levels for support of state, national, and international charities.
Hampton Bays Michael Collins Division 11 In April 2001 the Michael Collins Division 11 of the AOH was formed in Hampton Bays. The formation can be credited to Dan Heaney, the division’s first president and 15 charter members who undertook a Shamrock Degree in May 2011. This charter nucleus has grown to over l00 members. The Division holds their monthly meetings on the first Thursday of every month at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Hampton Bays. A Ladies AOH was formed and is now active with 80 members. The ambitious undertaking of hosting a St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a testament to the enthusiasm and energy of this Irish fraternal organization. Fergus Scully The tradition of celebrating, organizing and
participating in St. Patrick’s Day parades runs deep for Fergus Scully. Originally from Ireland, Fergus grew up watching his father serve as the Chairman of their hometown parade in Mountmellick, County Laois. In the early years of the Hampton Bays St. Patrick’s Day parade, Fergus was more involved as a participant, building a float each year to be entered in the parade. As time went on, his level of involvement has grown tremendously. Some of you might even recognize him already from the Grand Stand as he has served as the Parade M.C. for the past ten years! In the 1990s, Fergus first came to Long Island for a summer job and fell in love with the East End. A few years later, he chose the hamlet of Hampton Bays as his permanent home. Fergus and his wife Liz have two daughters, Caelinn and Saorla, both students at Hampton Bays High School. One of the many tasks of the Hampton Bays St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee is selecting a Grand Marshal to lead the parade and be honored by the community each year. As a member of the committee for years, this is a task that Fergus knows well as he has often made recommendations of those he felt deserved the honor! A Grand Marshal should be a leader of the local community, someone who contributes selflessly for the betterment of all. As an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Michael Collins Division 11, Fergus has been involved in much more than the parade. There have been countless fundraisers over the years to help families and those in need, scholarships have been established to give money back to local students and a large amount of time has been invested in bringing events to the area that celebrate Irish culture. When not working on a project for the AOH, Fergus can be found helping to coach his daughters’ soccer team with the Southampton Soccer Club, at any number of events the kids participate in with the Hampton Bays Schools, or hosting the monthly Pub Quiz trivia night at Buckley’s Inn Between. Fergus is truly honored to serve as Grand Marshal for the 14th Annual Hampton Bays St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

In Memoriam Kenneth F. Dow October 7, 1928 - January 3, 2018
Michael Collins Division 11 of the Ancient Order of Hibernians fondly remembers, and mourns the loss of, its longestserving Chaplain and Missions & Charities Committee Chairman. He was also one of the ambitious admen of the parade journal who, year after year, helped make this celebration possible. Known affectionately as “Ken” and “Kenny,” he was born and raised in Brooklyn, a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, and received a chemical engineering degree from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. In between he served in the United States Navy as a catapult and arresting gear technician. His military and academic training laid the groundwork for a prosperous career with several companies and more than three decades with Grumman Aerospace Corp. Throughout that time he worked in engineering, sales, and management positions which covered the aircraft, space, and commercial sectors—including more than 10 years in manufacturing management with the celebrated Lunar Module program. Upon retirement in 1990, Ken moved to Hampton Bays and dedicated his time to charitable pursuits. In addition to the AOH, over the years he also held memberships in Southampton Elks Lodge #1574, where he served as Exalted Ruler, as well as the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. A stalwart fan of George M. Cohan and James Cagney, Ken’s soft shoe taps and song and dance numbers were a staple of banquets, balls, parties, and informal meetings. After a funeral Mass offered on January 8 at the Church of St. Rosalie in Hampton Bays, Ken was laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery. A loving husband of 67 years, father to five, and grandfather to eight, he is survived by his wife Eileen; and his children Michael (Nina), Kenneth (Catherine), Thomas (Mae), David (Colette), and Susan (Peter); and eight grandchildren Jacqueline, Thomas, Emily, Melissa, Charlotte, Abigail, Grace and Harrison.
