“The seed that fell on good ground grew up and yielded a hundredfold.” Luke 8:8 Saint Patrick’s Day, 2019 Mr. Steve Lemanski, President Ancient Order of Hibernians Michael Collins, Division 11 Hampton Bays, NY 11946 Dear Steve, I salute you and our local chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for all of the good work that you do for the people of Hampton Bays! The annual celebration of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in town is not only a wonderful celebration of the local community, but of the past and current contributions of Irish Americans to our town. I am grateful for all of the work done by you, Division 11, and the parade committee in organizing what promises to be another successful and enjoyable parade. On behalf of our administrator, Fr. Maddaloni, I would like in particular to express gratitude for your frequent contributions to St. Rosalie’s parish in prayer, time, and financial generosity. I am personally quite happy to be able to express my congratulations to you, Steve, as Grand Marshall of the 15th Annual Hampton Bays St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It was a surprise to no one that you were selected, as your commitment to the AOH’s principles of friendship, unity, and Christian charity speak for themselves. Although I have been assigned to this parish for less than two years, it was clear to me from the beginning that Division 11 was blessed with a president who was not only a keen organizer, but a true friend to his Hibernian brothers. Your outgoingness and generosity are a testament to your warm heart. The unity that you live is clear in your love for your wife Liz, your five children, and your whole family, and your hard work and dedication to your company are a testament to your strong work ethic. Beyond all of these things, your generosity can be described in only Christian terms: your commitment to the sacraments and your respect for the Faith manifests itself in a piety that is not naïve or simplistic, but authentic and life-giving. In his correspondence with Kitty Kiernan during the Treaty negotiations in London, Michael Collins continually notes that he was frequenting Mass and confessions at the Brompton Oratory in London, as well as repeatedly professing his love for Kitty. It was this Love of God and family that drove Collins to accomplish all that he did for Ireland. It is this same spirit of both supernatural and human love which is so evident in you which makes you such a fitting Grand Marshall of the 2019 Hampton Bays St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The Ancient Order of Hibernians The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) in America was officially formed in New York on May 4, 1836 at St. James Church. It was born in anger centuries earlier in Ireland, after successive invasions of those who tried to master the Irish and alter their Gaelic lifestyle. Inflexible opponents like the Vikings were fought until their power was broken; others, like the Normans, were absorbed until they became as Irish as the Irish themselves. Through it all, the Irish maintained their language, traditions and religion. Today’s AOH, with its motto “Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity, is the most recent link in the evolution of ancient Irish societies. Organized in Ireland for the purpose of defending Gaelic values and protecting Church and clergy, it is the successor to the secret societies of old. The early AOH in America remained a secret society, and little is known of its activities except that it provided a monetary stipend to immigrants who arrived as members in good standing from the Irish Order and assisted them in obtaining jobs and social services. Quite naturally, the early AOH divisions were nurseries for the preservation of Irish culture and traditions in America. In large measure due to the significant contributions of the Irish in defending the Union during America’s Civil War, the AOH became stronger. Also, as the militant support of their Church dwindled, the AOH shifted its purpose to charitable activities in support of the Church’s missions, community service, and the promotion and preservation of their Irish cultural heritage in America. Today, they stand not only as the oldest Catholic lay organization in America, but as the largest Irish society in the world with divisions in Ireland and 49 of the United States. The AOH is partitioned into divisions, county and state boards, and is governed by a national board elected every two years. The division is the basic unit in the Order, and membership in a division is membership in the Order. Even county, state, and national officers maintain membership in a local Division. Annual dances, concerts, and parades sponsored by all levels of the Order raise millions for charity, while providing a showcase for positive contributions of the Irish to every walk of American life. Divisions usually support local charities within their geographic areas, while sending a portion of their monies to higher levels for support of state, national, and international charities.
Hampton Bays Michael Collins Division 11 In April 2001 the Michael Collins Division 11 of the AOH was formed in Hampton Bays. The formation can be credited to Dan Heaney, the division’s first president and 15 charter members who undertook a Shamrock Degree in May 2011. This charter nucleus has grown to over l00 members. The Division holds their monthly meetings on the first Thursday of every month at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Hampton Bays. A Ladies AOH was formed and is now active with 80 members. The ambitious undertaking of hosting a St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a testament to the enthusiasm and energy of this Irish fraternal organization. Stephen Denis Lemanski Steve was born in the Bronx to an Irish American mother (O’Meara) and a Polish American father. His Irish Grandfather, Denis, came to America in 1917, just in time to turn around and leave for WWI. Steve’s Mom made sure her eight children grew up appreciating their Irish heritage. St Patrick’s Day was always celebrated with family and lots of singing. Steve graduated from Manhattan College in the Bronx. Every St. Patrick’s Day he could be found marching down Fifth avenue with the Gaelic Society. After college, he and his wife Liz Reilly always went to the NYC St. Patrick’s Day parade. When Steve moved to the East End, he joined the Knights of Columbus and the AOH Five Sullivan Brothers Division in Smithtown. He was Financial Secretary of this AOH Division. With his family growing,Steve found it a bit difficult to keep up with the demands of these other commitments, family and work. His interest in everything Irish never faded. Steve’s five children, Michael,Caitlin, Anna, Denis and Jack all grew up to the sound of Irish history, music and song. Steve and Liz even went to Ireland for three weeks one summer with all the kids - aged 3 to 12!!!! Ask him about that sometime!!!! Steve rejoined the AOH, Division 11,Hampton Bays in 2008 and has been very active ever since. He has been on the Parade Committee every year, served as Financial Secretary for 5 years, was Man of the Year in 2011 and has been President of the Hampton Bays Division for the past three years. As a member of the Parade Committee, he has nominated and voted for Grand Marshal every year. It came as a complete surprise when, at the 2018 Man of the Year dinner (also Steve’s birthday), Fergus Scully announced Steve as Grand Marshall for 2019. Steve thought Fergus was just going to say “Happy Birthday”! Steve is truly honored to be Grand Marshal of the 15th annual Hampton Bays St. Patrick’s Day parade.
