Words are like seeds. Every time you say them, they’re taking root, they’re growing. The scripture says, “You will eat the fruit of your words.” Fruit is not fully developed overnight. It may take a little time, but you will become what you’re saying. Are you planting good seeds? Are you speaking faith-filled words over yourself, over your children, your health, your finances? There are miracles in your mouth. The difference between a dream and wish is that a wish is something you hope happens but a dream you put actions behind. The scripture says, “Faith without works is dead.” The people that succeed don’t always have the most talent, the most education, the most opportunity. Many times, they simply want it more than others. I want to light a fire in you today. You have to go after what God has for you. When you go through a disappointment, something doesn’t work out, you can hold on to it and live discouraged, or you can let it go and say, “God, I know You have something better. I know Your plans for me are for good. I know You’re directing my steps.” You have to be proactive if you’re going to keep your mind in peace because there's clutter all through the day. There’s noise, there’s drama, stress, worry, guilt, jealousy. They may come, but you don’t have to hold on to it. When the enemy roars at you, sometimes the best thing to do is ignore it, don’t pay it any attention. But there are times you need to roar back at him. When those threats come loud in your thoughts, answer back boldly what God says. When the thought roars, “You’ll never get over this sickness.” Roar back, “I will live and not die. The number of my days God will fulfill.” When he roars, “You can’t accomplish your dreams. You don’t have the talent.” Roar back, “Whatever I touch prospers and succeeds. Goodness and mercy are following me.” Sometimes the reason we’re frustrated is because we’re trying to change things that only God can change. You can’t make people do what’s right. You can pray for them, you can encourage them, but they have their own free will. Don’t let them steal your joy. You are not responsible for other people’s happiness. You cannot keep everyone in your life happy. You’re responsible for your own happiness. Get in agreement with God and declare what He put in your heart. Declare, “I am blessed. I am prosperous. I am forgiven. I am healthy. I am free. I have the favor of God. My children are mighty in the land. My family will fulfill our destiny. Dreams are coming to pass. Problems are turning around. New doors are opening. I’m excited about my future. I will become all God created me to be.”

Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo October is here and most of the car, truck people have waited all year for this month to arrive. We have 6367 vehicles from 41 states and Canada, with 843 first timers vehicles pre-registered for Cruisin’ the Coast® this year, twenty-four years ago only about 500 vehicles showed up for the first year. For those of us who were there it was the most exciting car event to ever take place on the Coast. So many things have changed since then but not the spirit and hospitality of the Clubs and volunteers who keep the show running smoothly. Thousands of vehicles cruise the Coast roadways, many thousands of people visit our hotels, restaurants and invade out downtown areas to view the classic vehicles. Even after all these years it’s still the “Best Block Party” in the U.S.A. (Continued on page 8)

Jimbo, I am Chad Shearer, thank you so much for featuring my wife Amanda’s 1972 SS Chevelle in September 2020 in the Lucedale cruise in section. This little cruise in was a lot of fun and I can believe it will grow more each time. A great bunch of people there Including the nice lady that ask me about the Car. I pretty much done all the work to the car myself with a little help from my kids and wife. It was mentioned that the car had a sharp paint job. My friend Matt Parry painted the car and I wanted to mention him. He is a great guy and lays down some quality paint jobs for hot rodders all over south Al and MS. I have been checking out the magazine for quite some time and never thought our car would show up in it . Pretty neat . Thanks again, Chad Jimbo, You know. . . time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is... the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting grey...they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me...but, I see the great change...Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will... I just fall asleep where I sit! And so...now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!! But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I'm not sure how long it will last...this I know, that when it's over on this earth...it's over. A new adventure will begin! Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done...things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime. So, if you're not in your winter yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life - do it quickly! Don't put things off too long!! Life goes by quickly. Do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!! "Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one. RedHawk@

buy it.' " "Well," the pastor persisted, "You know how to deal with him! Just tell him, 'Get behind me, Satan!' " "I did," replied his wife, "but then he said 'It looks great from back here, too!' " kevinBme@ Jimbo, “If you are offended by something then leave it alone. Cracker Barrel offends you, then eat somewhere else, but I like it so leave it alone. A statue offends you, then don’t go see it, but I like to see them as my history, so leave them alone. Don’t like meat, then eat vegetables but let me eat what I want to. Don’t like Gone With The Wind, then don’t watch it or read the book, but I like them, so leave them alone. I like worshipping God, but you are offended, so don’t go to church, but let me go. I read the Bible, but you are an atheist and want Bibles banned. So don’t read it, but don’t say I can’t. Leave it alone. You don’t like the names of military bases, but I do, so leave them alone and stay away from them. You don’t like the police force, then don’t call them when you are in trouble, but leave them alone so I feel safer having them. Why are the things you want so much more important than what I want? Are your demands greater than my likes? Is it because you use intimidation, blackmail and force to get your way- that you do? Let’s make a deal. I will leave what you like alone and you leave what I like alone and the world will be a better place for everyone. Glen@ Jimbo, Charlie's wife, Lucy, had been after him for several weeks to paint the seat on their toilet. Finally, he got around to doing it while Lucy was out. After finishing, he left to take care of another matter before she returned. She came in and undressed to take a shower. Before getting in the shower, she sat on the toilet. As she tried to stand up, she realized that the not-quite-dry epoxy paint had glued her to the toilet seat. About that time, Charlie got home and realized her predicament. They both pushed and pulled without any success whatsoever.. Finally, in desperation, Charlie undid the toilet seat bolts. Lucy wrapped a sheet around herself and Charlie drove her to the hospital emergency room. The ER Doctor got her into a position where he could study how to free her (Try to get a mental picture of this.). Lucy tried to lighten the embarrassment of it all by saying, "Well, Doctor, I'll bet you've never seen anything like this before". The Doctor replied, "Actually, I've seen lots of them...I just never saw one mounted and framed." I’ll leave you with this………. my doctor asked if anyone in my family was suffering from mental illness. I said; "no, we all seem to enjoy it" Till next month …… Jimbo

Jimbo, The poor country pastor was livid when he confronted his wife with the receipt for a $250 dress she had bought. "How could you do this!" he exclaimed. "I don't know," she wailed. "I was standing in the store looking at the dress. Then I found myself trying it on. It was like the Devil was whispering to me, 'Gee, you look great in that dress. You should

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year. It really is for me anyway. It's the Official start of Cruisin the Coast, my and many others favorite event. Many folks save their vacation time just for this adventure. I am blessed I am on vacation 365 days a year, and its great being retired. Maybe we can all knock the cob webs off of our rides and get a chance to go do some cruising. The event is still going on with a few minor changes, but it is still going to be a great Fun with Cars event as always. I and many other residents along the Gulf Coast volunteer our time so everyone else can have a Large Time while participating and visiting our Beautiful Ms. Gulf Coast. I hope to be helping at the Autocross Event at the Coast Coliseum. Should be fun, watching folks try to go as fast as possible while not knocking the cones down around the course. My next spot to be helping with will be with my club members, The Misfit Street Krewzers, in beautiful downtown, Bay St. Louis. I think this has become a favorite of many cruisers, it's always overflowing with cars, and folks just looking at vehicles on display. And often times it stays busy well into the evening, some folks have so much fun they just don't want to leave. And I might even be found at the Burnout Contest in Pass Christian on Thursday evening helping out with that. Another very popular event, for those that enjoy the smell of tire smoke and racing fuel. Let's not forget the Volunteers make this happen, yes there is a great group of folks that take care to get this thing rolling and organized, but the volunteers on the ground, at the sites, make it work. As a volunteer since the beginning, and missing just a few for medical purposes, I have enjoyed greeting and meeting many folks at Cruisin the Coast. We as volunteers have helped folks with lots of issues, from just answering questions to fixing vehicles, (when

10

OCTOBER 2020

we can). Or just offering a ride or directions to our local parts stores and mechanic shops when necessary. Us folks in the Yellow Staff shirts make it work, no matter the trouble we all try to help. Many of these folks do this for the love of this car crazy hobby, and for the love of their community. So, as you travel the roads along the Ms. Gulf Coast , and visit and stop at the sites along the way, take a look at the number of volunteers, and as we are thanking you for being here, thank them for helping out. But most importantly just have a good time and come back and see us again. Happy Cruisin to you and yours, from the now half empty Carriage House, ‌.. Gizmo If you see a motorcyclist moving from left to center to right in the same lane....they're not drunk or high. They are finding the best position to ride in based on many circumstances that constantly change. That manhole cover? That oil spot? That small puddle? That asphalt repair patch? The grass somebody mowed out into the street? Those things mean nothing to you in a car or truck but can be a life threatening hazard to a motorcyclist. When a motorcyclist suddenly speeds up, goes past you and then slows down? They're not signaling that they want to race you...they're trying to stay out of your blind spot. I know there are some motorcyclists who ride like idiots just as there are idiots in cars and trucks. They're out there. It sucks because they make others look bad. But one thing we all want is to be able to make it home alive. Your vehicle is much bigger than ours. Please keep that in mind. Also please put your phone down and look more than once

We got a few events that were still active and on schedule this month. We ran to the 3rd Friday night in Waveland on Coleman Ave. The cruise-in had about 30 cars show up on a warm evening but always a good breeze blowing at this one..Definitely one of the relaxing cruiseins. The big local show this month was the 7th Annual Annuciation Church show hosted by the Knights of Columbus in Kiln MS. they had 88 cars/trucks come out to support them and their benefit. They always put on a good show with lots of door prizes and awards. We finished this month with the Coast Cruizers at their Edgewater Mall cruise-in. They had 60 plus cars at this one along with a good crowd walking around checking the cars out, they also gave away lots of door prizes. Cruising the Coast should be kicking off by the time y’all are reading this. Gonna’ be a little different this year but together we will pull it off. It may not be the same but everyone will still have fun and enjoy the party. Remember to ..watch for our friends out riding their bikes also. ……. Allen.

It almost seemed like normal times at the Edwards Lucedale Breakfast Cruise this month. The weather cooperated and we had 24 cars/trucks and 2 motorcycles. As usual Edwards was gracious, and food was good. Well our old friend Coy Turner from Alabama traded his Model A for this RED 1963 ½ Falcon Sprint with a 302, power steering, racket pinion disc brakes, automatic with air. Eddie Havard of Lucedale brought this 1934 Chevy Truck that he has had for 3 years. This little truck has a 383 stroker motor bored out to 406 with a 9” Ford rear end. Eddie said he had done lots of work on it and a friend built the frame and strengthened it so that would stand up to the 383. Lots of engine for this little truck. Need to bring it again. Gregg Baum of Lucedale brought this gorgeous ’55 Chevy two door hardtop that he had had for 3 years. It is an automatic with a 468, power steering, power disc front brakes and a great interior and dash. So many people at the cruise today have

such fond memories of the tri-5 Chevy’s. I know I do. Gregg recently retired and this was his first time to be able to come to the breakfast. We hope you become a regular with us. As I write this article, I am thinking of all the brave souls who lost their lives on this day, 9/11/01. It is hard to think it has been 19 years since this tragedy and Americans seem to have an ability to forget and get past and move one. However, this is one event I think is much like Pearl Harbor – one we should never forget. Thank goodness for those willing to serve to protect us all. May God bless them and the United States of America. Come see us at Edwards Drugs in Lucedale, MS every second Friday of the month.

Let our readers know who you are, add your event wrap-up to our pages. Send a photos & a few words to editor@dixiepress.com

These Automobiles Became Legends A gangster’s car was as important as the crease in his slacks and the pistol under his arm, in the 1920’s and 1930’s. He used his automobile to distinguish himself from other hoodlums, thus elevating his criminal and financial status. Women, violence, drugs, and cars became a part of the lifestyle of a gangster. Citizens of that time became obsessed with gangster culture, romanticizing their lifestyle and admiring their fast, shiny cars. Criminals and their fine automobiles are synonymous with one another. After all, heists required getaways, and corpses, well…trunks. Vehicles often served as mobile whacking sites. Running boards were especially handy during shootouts and getaways. Some preferred low-key cars that were not flashy or easily identified. Whatever choice of conveyance the particular outlaw preferred, horsepower and speed played an important role when evading the police. One mobster favorite was the Ford Model 18 V-8, introduced in 1932. At the time the V-8 set a new standard for mass market cars. The iconic flat-head design was the ultimate in innovation at the time and made superior power. It also had much better handling. Though the Ford produced less horsepower that the Chevrolet and Plymouth, (the two other low priced models of the time), the Ford V-8 was the quickest of the three. The 271 cubic inch engine was rated at 65 horsepower, but the power could be increased 1932 Ford Model 18 V-8 significantly with improvements to the ignition and carburetor. The specifications quickly enticed many performance minded customers including infamous bank robbers John Dillinger and Bonnie and Clyde. It quickly became related to the Mafia, and bank robbers of the 1930’s. The Ford Model 18 was the ultimate in innovation of the time, and John Dillinger Bonnie & Clyde sported that iconic flat-head design, that made superior power. Many claimed that speeds of 80 miles per hour were achieved. That extra power and handling would often make this Ford a great getaway car for the likes of John Dillinger, Baby Face

Nelson, Bonnie and Clyde, and Harry Pierpont. John Dillinger is said to have owned a Model A, and it is rumored that Clyde Barrow wrote a letter to founder Henry Ford thanking him for the car’s dependability and speed. The Ford Model 18 sedan sold for $650.00 in 1932. It was the most expensive model available. In that year alone 298,647 units were sold with the flat-head V-8. Ford could not keep up with the demand for this icon. The V-8 was such a hit that it made the 4 cylinder models obsolete. Al Capone made the 1928 Cadillac model 341 Town Sedan famous. It sported 90 horsepower 341 cubic inch L-head V-8, which in 1928 was considered powerful. Al Capone had a big ego and a big car, which was painted green and white to match cop cars and was outfitted with features such as a police band radio, inchthick glass, and side windows with ports for Tommy guns. The rear window could also be lowered to allow fellow mobsters to blaze pursuers. The entire car was armor plated and the doors were lined with more than 3,000 lbs. of armor. The car ended up weighing 9,000 lbs. No engine built could haul this beast around quickly. Al Capone was arrested for tax evasion and sent to prison when he was 33 years old. His car was impounded by the IRS. It has been alleged in the book, “Reilly of the White House, by Secret Service man Michael Reilly, that this car was used by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on December 8, 1941 to protect him in route to his “Infamy Speech”. There is no hard evidence that this ever happened, but it was an interesting tale linking a President to an infamous gangster. Some mobsters owned car dealerships while others favored stolen cars for use during hits. The really bad guys would walk around town and when they needed a car they had people to steal it. When they were done with it, they would take it to their favorite junk yard and have mechanics tear it apart and remove any pieces, because often they had killed someone in the vehicle or around it. It was the popular way to remove evidence before DNA evidence. Perhaps the obsession I have for cars is not uncommon. Perhaps there are hundreds of thousands of us “car nuts” out there. It certainly is not a new phenomenon. There was a practical side to having large and fast cars for the gangsters of the 1920’s, 1930’s, and beyond. There was also a love for speed and status that continues on today. I enjoy my cars and all the wonderful people I meet that are involved in the old car hobby. Thank you for all the happiness you bring to so many people. Write to me at my email address and tell me what interests you. You might see it in print soon.

The Ronnie McLain Story September 2016 Vol. 21n No.9 By:Cubby When we pass people on the street we have no idea what talents and stories lurk within. One of the great joys in my life has been being able to sit down and talk to people and learn their fascinating stories. Here is the story of Ronnie McLain, a man that you could see in a store and never know of his genius. I am humbled with the opportunity to tell a part of his story. He is so complex that I cannot capture him completely in this article. I know the lives he has touched hold him dearly in their hearts. Ronnie is a metal fabricator, welder, car builder, musical instrument crafter, pilot, home builder, sign maker, pinstriper, Ultra light flying machine builder, football player, motorcycle racer, draftsman, (just to name a few of his talents) and is still a Pastor at the Bedford Free Methodist Church at age 73. Whew! All the different things he has accomplished make me appear lazy. I didn’t know there were enough hours in a day to accomplish all these things! He has even more accomplishments than I have space to write about. Ronnie McLain is currently finishing up a 1932 Ford with a hand built racing chassis and a stainless steel exhaust. My photos don’t really portray the complex build that this was. All he started with was a chopped top 1932 Ford body that he found, and an idea. The rest of the car he fabricated. The first thing he designed and built was the frame. Ronnie started with 2” X 6” X 3/16” wall steel to make the frame. I have included photos of the original plans he used. The complexity involved in building this frame boggles my mind. Once the foundation was built, he built a sprint car positive steering gear, built a two radius rod race car set-up, sway bars and a 4 link suspension, added a dropped front axle, a Camaro 273 Posi rear end, Lokar shifter, four corner air bags with a stainless air tank, power 4 wheel disc brakes, power windows, power door locks, an opening rear window, a Chevrolet 350 engine bored .030 over, Edelbrock Performer carburetor, aluminum radiator, hand fabricated the grille, put on ‘40 Ford spindles, 7 X 15 Speedway wheels, suicide doors, and bucket seats, just to scratch the surface of this build. This is a masterpiece and one you will not see two of. Ronnie feels that: “God gives us the ability to do things. He wants us to do them well, but not forget Him in the process.” Paul writes in Romans 12: 1,2: And so dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all He has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind He will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship Him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Well, Ronnie McLain certainly does things well. He is using his talents and the results are all positive. I give a big thank you to Ronnie McLain for allowing me to share his story. Gotta Cruise!

Cubby With a heavy heart I post some of the following letter …...Ed. Ronnie was our Visitation Pastor at the Free Methodist Church. Ronnie enjoyed building Antique Cars, he had two cars in museums one in Muscle Car City, Punta Gorda, Fla and a Salt Flat Car, 1923 Race Car, in the Speeding Motors Museum, Smith Collection, Lincoln, NE. He also had a “Woody” that was almost finished. His son Greg took it to finish up for Indy, Pastor Ronnie's granddaughter. They were buddies, Indy helped him a lot on this car. It’s amazing, it has a chrome engine in it. I didn’t realize Pastor Ronnie was sick, he was ministering to my brother-in-law who was dying of Lung Cancer. He came by that (Continued on page 18)

Salt Flat Car, 1923 Race Car, in the Speeding Motors Museum, Smith Collection, Lincoln, NE. morning to pray with him. I will never forget what he said. He told him that Heaven was going to be beautiful and I want to go with you. Ronnie was having chest pains. They did a heart catheterization and found out he was blocked 70% and sent him home. Ronnie was born on May 27,1943 and on his birthday he had a heart attack. He went to the hospital in an ambulance, then lifeline in a helicopter and transferred to the ICU hospital. When Ronnie came out of surgery the news was he only had 15% of his heart working and the outcome wasn't good. He wasn't upset at all, he was very calm and ready to meet his maker. One thing that he asked Barbara Jean, his wife, to do is put a picture of Indy (his granddaughter) in bed with him and put a light on it so when he woke up through the night he could see her. How did Classic Restoration start? Roddy Merritt Classic Restorations never really was suppose to even exist. It is Mike Martin's hobby run amuck. The entity was at Mike's house in Madison for the first 16 years. Space was at a premium in the 1700' garage. In the Fall 2019 the shop was moved into a 8500' building in Ridgeland, Ms. The building was perfect for a car restoration shop. Based on these photos it likely needed to have been a bit larger. A commercial paint booth was purchased and after using about 1M screws it was put together. It is an excellent booth allowing really nice paint work to be done. With a full time staff of 5 and some help from Mike's good, gear- head friends in Crystal Springs, a lot of good work is taking place. Retirement is not working out... Jimbo, I found this article to be very interesting and informative for prospective classic buyers, you might want to check it out and possibly put it in your paper. I left the guys name on it for copyrights info. Charly Mileage - does it really matter? This always makes me smile… “CHEVROLET IMPALA: 1963 sport coupe, with only 14,000 original miles! 409/425, Red/Red, 4-spd, all numbers match, frameup restoration, $35,000 obo. Larry (262) XXX-XXXX WI.” Of course it could be any car, but would someone care to explain why would a car with only 14,000 miles on it from new needs a complete ‘frame-up restoration’? New paint and bushings maybe but a total frame-up? You’d think this example may be an isolated case, but we see over and over again as we sniff out bargains everyday among the classic cars for sale in the States. Outlandish mileage claims are something that still seems to happen often in America, yet for some reason Europeans it seems would never try to get away with claiming a vehicle has low mileage unless they are the original owners and have a stack of service receipts and other paper work to validate their claim. Think about a brand new car, and what condition it would be in after being owned for just about one year - You'd expect it to be barely used, right? People generally take extra special care of their cars when they are new. The seats would be great, the carpets, the engine and compartment would still have the stickers on them that they left the factory with! This car has been around almost 38 years! Unless the guy selling the car is the original owner who can prove with a receipt from the dealership, that he bought it new, and has a damn good reason why anyone would shell out (back in them days) a couple of thousand dollars for a brand new car, use it for a year and then park it - You’ve got to know that the seller is a complete fool if he really thinks anyone is going to believe it.

20

OCTOBER 2020

The purpose in writing this article is to highlight cases perhaps not quite so obvious as the one above. You may see a car from the 70’s advertised with low original miles and think its great deal. Like this one: JAGUAR XJS 1979, Signal red/ Biscuit 12 cyl, 70,000 original miles, garage kept, $10,000 firm. (800) XXX XXXX Miami On the face of it this sounds like a good deal doesn’t it? 70,000 miles over 21 years translates to about 3300 miles a year - talk about gently used! But again, unless this is the car's original owner, with supporting paperwork, it could have done 270,000! Upon a visual inspection, it’s often easy to tell from wear on the seat, carpets, pedal rubbers etc. that the car has high miles, However, I’ve known unscrupulous sellers purchase a ‘new’ interior from a real low mileage car from the same year, that was totaled in a wreck and switch them out. Wouldn’t it have been easy to simply ask this guy fax you some documentation to back up his claim before you waste your time traipsing all over the country? I believe a good rule of thumb would be, not to expect to get a genuine mileage reading from a car that is more than say 10-15 years old. By that time it’s probably passed through two or even three owners and rarely can its full history be traced. The bottom line though must be, whether or not the odometer reading is truly important, remember that a genuine low mileage car can in many ways be a worse buy than a high mileage vehicle that has been correctly maintained or restored. Additionally, who decided that a car with 100,000 miles on its engine is shot? Take each vehicle on it's own merits, and when it comes to classics, mileage should often take a back seat to factors like original equipment and structural condition, and even these can become irrelevant if the asking price is realistic! That being said, if you are looking for the ‘Real McCoy’ you may be wondering what lengths one has to go to avoid getting burned? Well it’s really not so hard, you simply have to set your emotions aside and pay attention to the tell-tale signs. Instrument binnacles with odometers that have lower mileage on

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

them are easily found and can often be swapped out with equal ease, so here are a few checkpoints and hints that can help you recognize a potentially original low mileage classic whilst inspecting it in someone’s driveway. Remember at all times that things can easily be faked, as most parts are available through reproduction. There is no substitute for a good all-round knowledge of the model and of course common sense goes a long way in assessing the ratio of ‘wear: mileage' ratio. You must look for the things that show wear and are difficult to replace or overlooked. The carpets for instance, but don’t look at the obvious, look at the floor beneath the carpet in the drivers foot well, especially where the driver's heel pivots to the accelerator? Check the headliner for stains or damage, the gearshift knob for wear, and the spare wheel, has it been used? If not it’s a good sign, but is it the original tire it left the factory with? If it has been used, how worn is the tread? Also, check the spare wheel fixings like the jack, lug wrench etc.- have they seen much use? The tires - broadly speaking, most cars leave the factory with a set of tires good for 40,000-miles and 25,000-mile brake pads; bear that in mind when you consider if a vehicle's odometer is accurate or not. Pedal rubbers can also give clues, are they worn to excess or appear 'too new'? Pull back the rubbers and check to see if the pedal is polished from direct foot contact. Keys give good clues, are they showing the brass on the finger contact area - are they a 'sloppy' fit in the ignition barrel? Or do you believe the story that the originals were lost at the Newport Jazz festival in 1969 and the car has been little used since? The steering wheel, ask yourself if the surface is sufficiently 'scuffed' for the miles? Look at dash controls like heater knobs and the like. Don’t forget the engine bay, does it appear to have been 'prepared' or recently cleaned? Are the engine mounting and bell housing bolts all present, correct and facing the right way? You may accept new water hoses, fan belt or water pump etc. But is it the original clutch, and if not, why was it changed? In all the years I've been in the business of buying classic cars

for people, VERY rarely do genuine low mileage cars come up, they do - but it's not too often. One example that comes to mind was an Austin-Healey that was bought brand new by a soldier two weeks before he was sent to Vietnam. He never came back. His mother, knowing how much he loved the car, couldn't bring herself to sell it, and it sat in a barn in Pennsylvania for over 30 years until it was discovered by a neighbor shortly before the old woman passed away. Ah Yes, those are the tales that keep us cranking our necks every time we think we catch a glimpse of an unusual car in someone’s yard. My wife kids me that I have 'Superman' x-ray vision that can see through trees, around barns and even in people’s back yards! Perhaps, but I can tell you there are times when I would give my brothers right arm for a helicopter! Written by Jeff Webster Buyer Services International LLC

Mason Barfield

As I’m writing this column, the year 2020 is busy giving us one heck of a licking. We are hunkered down in Foley, AL in our new house preparing for Hurricane Sally. We are located just north of Gulf Shores 10 miles in inland. We are exhausted. We have been moving after work and on weekends for about ten days. We just about have it licked. Now it’s time for car shows and Cruisin The Coast. Do you have your car registered, hotel reservations made? As much as the cruisers have been home and bored, Cruisin The Coast will breathe life back in the car scene. Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show will be performing daily at the Cruisin The Coast Swap Meet, T hursday through Saturday October 8-10. Look for us outside near the ET Motorgear Event Trailer. The Garden Party on Wednesday October 7, we were booked for at the Beau Rivage, has been cancelled, the Beau will look at doing it next year maybe. Elizabeth and I will be staying at Margaritaville Resort in Biloxi for Cruisin The Coast. Emerald Coast Cruizen in Panama City Beach is on for Wednesday through Saturday November 11-14 in beautiful Panama City Beach, FL. Talked with Rakes and Lisa today, they are busy getting the show together, and today 9-16-20 they got final approval for the show, their master plan accepted. I know everyone can’t wait to get back to Panama City Beach, it’s always a great venue to have a car show. See everyone there! We moved night and day for two weeks, nights after work and until midnight on weekends. We love our new house, we were lucky to find it. A rental of U-Haul 12 X 6 enclosed trailer for a couple of days getting my stuff from Pensacola and Elizabeth’s stuff from Dothan. Then this past weekend we rented a giant 26 foot Penske

22

OCTOBER 2020

box truck. I hired two body builders from Brendan Jone’s Gym, Axis War Room to move my household stuff from Gulfport, it’s been in storage for a year and a half, they loaded it into the Penske, thanks Max, Kennedy and Brendan for coming through for us. I then drove the big diesel to Foley, AL where Kyle and Calvin did the backbreaking work. (My master bedroom suite will give you a hernia just looking at it.) We got all the furniture and stuff in the house and mostly organized, but we still have boxes to sort and stuff to put away… then Sally hit us. We now live in Foley, AL, just north of Gulf Shores. We are 10 miles from the beach. Sally was supposed to be a wimp, Sally was no wimp, she beat us for 12 hours. We brought Elizabeth’s dogs into the Sun Room and at midnight we had to bring them in the house. Maximum sustained winds of 105 MPH with reported gusts to 126 MPH. It was a rough night with very little sleep. About 4 AM we dropped off to sleep, we woke at about 6:15 AM to a messed up neighborhood. At our place we lost the dog’s backyard privacy fencing, we lost our flag pole that had proudly flown the new American flag for only a week. Our architectural roof was fine, but we had neighbor’s roof shingles in our yard, a lot of shingle damage in the subdivision and a bunch of trees down. Our four large Palm trees did fine. We joking refer to the new house as Four Palms. Sally was a bad mammer jammer, but all her power was in the front and also of course with her eye wall, the eye came right over our house in Foley. The calm of the eye lasted about 40 minutes, but the backside eye wall was nothing, half the wind and very little rain. Even before the storm was finished… I took off to my Hot Rod Show Shop in Gulfport to pick up my generator, gas cans and other needed items. I went to Wal-Mart there for supplies also. I witnessed a lot of damage, awnings, tree’s, flooding. 90% of Baldwin County, AL is without electricity. Nothing is open, it’s like the Mississippi Coast after Katrina. By the time I got home at 6 PM, got the generator setup and all the extension cords run… I was one whipped puppy. I was beat up already from 10 days of moving. That leads me to where I am now, finishing up this column and getting ready to submit it for the October edition. Cruisin The Coast is an incredible event, I can’t wait to see

everyone and have ya’ll meet Elizabeth. She is incredible and looking so forward to meeting everyone. We’ll follow that up with PCB and Emerald Coast Cruizin. Ya’ll have no idea what Rakes and Lisa have gone through to make this show happen. The COVID 19 detailed plan they had to submit was impressive and Panama City Beach agreed with approval. Big impressive car shows in October and November…and we’ll see you there! 2020 never stops delivering, come on 2021, nobody will be sad to see this year end!

OCTOBER 2020

9/15/20 by Chavus Holland Welcome back everyone!!! This month has flown by for me! Not much has changed in our personal lives, as the mask mandates and social distancing restrictions has continued to snuff out our small businesses a little more each day! We recently received our completed 2019 tax returns from our accountant, and that just made things worse for me personally! We’ve been small business owners since May 2006, and every year our business has grown each year…2019 was HUGE, in growth and in numbers overall! That’s fantastic!!! The depressing side of that is, 2020 started out WAY ahead of 2019’s first quarter pace…and then…in walks the CHINA VIRUS!!! Our businesses, (and many other small businesses like ours) continue to take hit after hit as this craziness lingers! With events being canceled 6-8 months out right now, I’m not really sure when we will be stable again! Right now, we should be buying our inventory for Mardi Gras and Prom 2021, but we are hearing talk now of these events being canceled as well! Hopefully it’s just rumors, but the sources seem to be pretty reliable! We continue to hear the same old same old every week from our state leaders! Y’all know what I’m talking about…” We are doing great, just need to keep doing it a little longer…blah blah blah” All the while, we are slowly going under as they privately live their normal lives! We need a “do over” for 2020! As frustrating as this has been to live through, I just continue to pray that this all just goes away soon!!!...HOWEVER, I am a firm believer that life is what you make it…even with our finances being severely hit, and all of our many years of hard work crumbling down around us…we have managed to find a positive side…If there is a positive side to all the craziness…It would definitely be how we have been able to travel and race as a family! That’s right, all 5 of us are living our best lives together! In a regular year, Adrian could never be away from the store during busy season for a minute, much less a whole weekend at a time! And I couldn’t be gone from my responsibilities either in normal times, so with that said…It’s not all bad!...That’s all I’m going to say about that for now! How about some racing news???? Here we GO…We left off last time with car problems that were whipping our tails! Our car had no forward drive, and we were just roasting the rear tires off in a race! We found a bent right front upper A-arm and figured that was likely, at least SOME of our problems! We decided to take a couple weekends off and make sure we had it right before we tried racing again. Meanwhile, we loaded the car up and traveled to Picayune, MS to see our friend and set-up expert, Noah Daspit! Noah was thorough, as usual, and found several other little things that probably contributed to our problems. While there, we went ahead and changed out all of our old springs with new ones…Just to be 100% sure we found (and fixed) the problem…Now it’s time to race!!! With 3 weeks off from racing you can imagine we were eager to go! It was Labor Day weekend and we committed to run a triple header at 3 different tracks! Whew!!! It seemed like a great idea at the time!!! Friday September 4th, Tri-County Speedway in Flomaton Alabama. This is one of Chase’s favorite little tracks! They were scheduled to run for an $800 to win purse. With 13 cars registered, and Chase drawing the DEAD LAST starting position, it looked like it was going to be a dogfight to get out of there in one piece…much less getting a top 3 finish! But remember, this is our first night of a 3-

24

OCTOBER 2020

night weekend, so our main focus was finishing, with minimal damages! Here we go! Chase started last in the first heat and drove us to a clean 2nd place finish! NOT TOO BAD! This would put us starting 3rd in the feature. Chase got up on that wheel and went to work! He was running 2nd around halfway as they (Chase and the leader (G17) Greg Hopkins) were beginning to lap cars! The leader misjudged a lapped car and ended up tangling with them, which brought out a caution, sending the leader to the rear. I hated to see that, but we have been on the other side of that situation ourselves recently, and it’s just a racing thing!…Now Chase was the new leader and he cruised on home to Victory Lane for his 3rd time in just 5 visits at Tri-County! AWESOME!!!! Great start for our long weekend! $800 winnings Saturday September 5th, Deep South Speedway in Loxley, Alabama. We camped overnight on the route home at Wind Creek Casino RV Park in Atmore, AL. We drove back home Saturday morning and did our maintenance and repairs to the car in our home shop. We were already tired, as the heat and sleeplessness was magnifying the situation! Our crew met us at the shop, and it was all hands-on deck to get the #45 machine ready for round 2! Here we go! It’s already Saturday evening, and we are still working on the car! It’s TIME TO GO!!! Thank goodness we had written a list on the way to the shop that morning and we had prioritized the list in order of importance, just in case we didn’t have time to get to everything! That meant we had a dirty car in the trailer that was fully capable of winning round 2! LOL…23 modifieds at Deep South…and I’m talking about some sure enough HOTRODS and WHEELMEN!!! We roll out for hot-laps, where they are scoring laptimes on the big scoreboard for all to see, and guess who set fast time of the field? CHASE HOLLAND!!!! YES!!!! Oh wait…that don’t pay nothing! We’re here for the $1200 to win in the feature! LOL… not to mention I’m always nervous when we are that fast in hotlaps, because that usually means the track will change and I’ve got to make the right adjustments at the right time to keep that pace all night! We started 3rd in the heat race and looked fast as we moved to 2nd and then ran down the leader (6) Ryan Fowler, before a caution grouped us back up. The re-start wasn’t as good for us as Chase fell to 3rd and that’s where we finished. Feature time…We rolled off 7th in the huge field and our strategy was to just hold our position until halfway and then race for the win! We were looking good, holding our position, until Chase closed in on a lap car going into turn 1! Chase applied pressure hard on the brakes, which caused the rear brakes to lock, and that immediately sent him for a quick donut! Luckily no one hit us… but now we had to go to the rear of the field!!! Chase got up on the wheel and started a hard (CLEAN) charge back through the field! As he got back to around 8th or 9th position, he hit a hole on the outside lane, which blew his hood open when the frame bottomed out and dirt exploded up and out of the hood! This was a distraction (to say the least) but he powered on through and drove us home to a 7th place finish! Very happy with those results! $175 winnings The Finale!!! Sunday September 6th, Southern Raceway in Milton, Florida. Chase and I stayed up late at our pit spot in Loxley, doing our car maintenance in the cool night air. We finished up around 3am Sunday morning. We only slept a few hours before waking up and traveling on to our third and final stop of our 3-night weekend! We arrived at Southern Raceway and we were ready for action! I’m not gonna lie, I WAS EXHAUSTED!!! Chase was too, we each said that we felt like zombies! I told everyone in our pit to double check behind me with anything that they saw me touch on the car! We went out for hot-laps, and once again we were fastest of the field! We started 4th in our heat and Chase raced his way to 2nd and was closing fast on the leader…then, he slightly miss judged a tractor tire coming to the checkered in turn 3 and he barely touched it with his front bumper, which snatched him around and left him stalled in the turn with heavy frontend damage, as the rest of the field raced to the checkered! Our crew went to work and had us ready to race again for the feature! The track was quickly changing all night and we were constantly trying to keep up as we kept an eye on it! Feature Race time! He started in the rear of the field, and Chase did a great job coming to the front! He made it to

5th, but that is where he hit a roadblock! He just couldn’t get past the 4th place car clean, so he spent up his tires trying to pass him for the rest of the race! Coming for the checkered, Chase got one last shot, and he took it as they were passing a lapped car in turn 3! Clean pass!!! 4th at the line!!! I’ll take it! Then the 2nd place car was mad at the 1st place car, so he ran into him after the race was over and got himself disqualified! That moved us up to 3rd place! WOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!! I WAS SO EXHAUSTED!!! I know Chase was too! Overall it was an awesome experience! We will certainly do it again! Hopefully we can figure out a way to get more rest in between races next time! $400 winnings At the beginning of 2020, we never dreamed we would be traveling around in our motorhome, living on the road, enjoying what

we love, as a family! I guess life is not all bad during this pandemic!!! We’ve had some awesome interactions with our fans at all the racetracks we have visited! That has definitely been the highlight of this journey for us all! From very early on in Chases racing career we’ve pushed him to realize how important the fans are! Without you guys, we are nothing! It’s because of you guys and gals, that we are able to do what we love! From the bottom of our hearts, WE THANK YOU ALL!!! Thank y’all for reading!!! Be sure to check out our Facebook page for more details and videos of our racing adventures! Just google search, Chase Holland Racing and it should pop up our Facebook page. OUTLAW EXPRESS 1965 Ford Ranchero Gulf Coast Motorsports has given racers from the Southern Outlaw Gassers (SOG) the opportunity to write about their rides for publication in upcoming issues, so here is my story. My name is Brad Outlaw, a Baby Boomer born and raised in LA (lower Alabama) and grew up in the 50s and 60s. I started driving in 1964 with my first car, a 1951 Chevy 2 door coupe, 6 cylinder, 3 speed. It took all of about a week to detonate the 6 cylinder, on purpose I’m sure, so I could swap in a junk yard 283 Chevy V8. I had been saving lawn mowing money for years and when I discovered an article in a car magazine about swapping a V8 Chevy into a 50-52 Chevy and use the original transmission, torque tube and 6 cylinder rear end I was all in. There is no comparison between old car magazines and todays publications, primarily because of the lack of speed parts back then, and all the trick engine swap tech and hardware we have today. The article indicated that I use the V8 bellhousing, change the bearing retainer on the 6 cylinder trans, which the throw out bearing slides on, and that allowed the trans to fit the hole in the bellhousing. All I had to do at that point was drill new trans mount holes in the bell matching the trans mount ears and install 4 bolts, washers and nuts along with a V8 clutch assembly. Talk about a shady operation, this was certainly one, but the process was all laid out in a car magazine. I used a Ford truck hydraulic clutch master and slave cylinder and I was ready to go. What the article really didn’t address was that the V8 Chevy power was considerably more than the 6 cylinder trans and differential could take if one chose to drive like an idiot. I changed 2 to 3 transmissions and at least 2 differentials in the 51, before I traded the 51 Chevy for a real clean 52 Ford coupe. I purchased the V8 drive train out of a junkyard 57 4 door Chevy and installed it all in the 51 Ford; no more tearing up trans and differentials for me….I thought. I took that 51 Ford to my very first drag race at Millers Ferry Alabama when I was 17. Millers Ferry was a WW2 abandoned airfield out in a huge pasture with no trees. Before each race, the cows had to be moved off the strip. The fastest car at the track that day was a 51 Chevy owned/driven by Aubrey Padgett. It was a 327, 4 speed car with 6 2bbl carbs. I remember the front fender quarters would blow out/back as he went thru the lights at the end of the quarter mile. Mr. Aubrey could shift that 4 speed to. Regardless, I was hooked. Funny thing is, 50 years later, Mr. Padgett is STILL racing today with the Southern Outlaw Gassers, and still one of the fastest cars raced with the SOG group. Little did I know 3 1/2 years ago, when I discovered the Southern Outlaw Gassers, that I would see my hero from the 60s. I was drafted by Uncle Sam in 1968 and because my brother was a helicopter pilot in Viet Nam when I finished Basic, Airborne and Infantry training, I was selected for Parachute rigger training. After Rigger training, I was stationed in Germany in 1970 and the U.S. Army paid for my 1968 Roadrunner to be shipped to overseas. The Army in the 60s really promoted Drag Racing and there were sanctioned Drag Races all over Germany at Army airfields. The Roadrunner and I did well racing that year in Germany. Through the years, I never really got over the car sickness, its just that life, family and almost everything else took priority. I was an aircraft mechanic by trade and eventually ended up employed by the FAA in in 1988. My last posting with the FAA was in Flowood, Ms, where I still live today. Fast forward to 2010 when I retired from the FAA. The kids were gone and educated and I had lots of free time. I built a Cobra kit car, then a 65 Mustang SCCA clone, then I purchased an old drag racer 1967 Fairlane with a 427 tunnelport engine. I rebuilt the entire car and regrettably sold it to a gentleman in Australia. I then built a 1931 Ford Model A coupe hot rod with a Ford 427 Sideoiler engine that I still own and drive. In 2015 I acquired a 1965 Ford Ranchero with no engine or trans with intentions of building a gasser street car. I built a stroked 390 FE engine (445 cu in), C6 trans, 9 inch rear end tubbed for tire clearance, and a straight axle. Before I even finished the car, I met Jimmy Roberts, who also runs his Willys gasser (Dixie Flyer) and he informed me that folks were actually running old school gassers in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida with a group called the Southern Outlaw Gassers (SOG). I heard about Gasser Blowout 5 in Atmore, Alabama and decided to go check it out.

Wow, what a great time, great people, good food, fast cars and even OLD friends. Jessie Holmes runs SOG and I knew Jessie from my Roadrunner street racing days in Pensacola Florida in the 70s, and Aubrey Padgett is STILL running a 52 Chevy coupe, and fast as ever. Jimmy Roberts was there with the Willys Dixie Flyer, and Bubba Cummins with Wompin Wagon, that I had seen run in Mobile, Ala with a fuel Injected small block Chevy in the late 60s, as a kid. Fact is, all the guys are pretty much like me, just a car guy that found a niche in Gasser Racing that we have missed from our days as young men reading car magazines and wishing we could run like Stone, Woods and Cook, or Jack Chrismans, Sachs & Sons first funny car 1964 Comet, George Montgomery, Gas Ronda, Hubert Platt and the list goes on. Those poorly written and certainly sketchy hot rod articles from the 60s hooked a lot of folks and we are able to race again with an awesome group of guys, and gals, in safe cars, at premier tracks in the Southeast.

There is one downside to all this Gasser racing business, and that’s a problem of sorts. Seems your Gasser is never fast enough and the Ranchero has sure changed in almost 4 years. Originally, I had a 3K stall convertor, 4:10 diff gears and MT Street Radials. Now I have a 5k stall convertor, a 5:14 rear axle gear and have ditched the cheater slicks for some Hoosier 28 X 10.5 real deal slicks. I’ve changed the intake to a Victor Yates with Gary Williams 1020 CFM race carb, along with cooling improvements, suspension upgrades, different fiberglass hood, plus I’ve lost the tailgate, extra seat, bumpers and any other unnecessary weight items. Thing is, there are Gasser groups all over the U.S. these days, and we support other Gasser Groups events and they support ours. Jessie has arranged for us to run in Texas, Georgia, Kentucky with other Gasser Groups and we always have an awesome time. Thanks to Jessie Holmes for starting the Southern Outlaw Gassers and organizing all the events. The Southern Outlaw Gassers have two primary races each year, both in Atmore, Ala at Atmore Dragway. The next race is Gasser Blowout 12 (GBO12) in October, 2020, following the Cruising the coast event on the Gulf Coast. For an old guy like me, racing the Ranchero is not just fun, but I’m back in a car that I never could have owned and operated as a young man, but the view from the driver’s seat is through a 16 year old’s eyes. What’s the car run you say? It’s the fastest car I’ve ever owned, and I’m certainly not the fastest in our group, but no one has more fun than I do. Guess you’ll just have to make GBO 12 to find out.

Thank you to all our racers who traveled many miles to join us at Mo-Kan Dragway last weekend. Jessie Holmes of Pensacola, FL logged more than 800 miles and was the recipient of our long hauler award. Thanks for making the trip to Smokin’ MoKan Dirty South Gassers (DSG) is a rule-friendly southern based group of drag racers who strive to resemble the Golden Era of drag racing in the 1960's. Pittsburgh - Atmore 942 mile trip My name is Dave Lewis, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. My brother Steve and I are coming down for GBO12. We're members of the Geezer Gassers. I found out about this event through Mark Sergison and the North American Gassers. We're bringing two Gassers to the event. 1937 Chevy “Attitude Adjustment” and a 1956 Chevy “ROWDY”. Attitude Adjustment was originally built and raced by my dad, also named Dave. After giving up racing about 10 yrs ago, my brother and I took over ownership and now split seat time in it. ROWDY is an actual “60's” Gasser that was raced in the New York - New Jersey area back in the day. It was parked in the garage in the early 70's and had not been moved until about 2 yrs ago when I purchased it. Both cars have small block Chevys with 4 speeds. Love banging the gears !!! We enjoy traveling to different tracks, meeting different people, and seeing different cars. Looking forward to coming to Atmore and the GBO12 ! Thanks for your time ! Dave Lewis

My name is Daryl Nelson, from Wayne, Illinois. I own J&R Auto Repair, a service station that I have owned for the past 44 years. I do nothing but repair late model vehicles and that gives me the passion to work on my older cars because I do not get burnt out and keep the passion alive. I like to attend some Goodguys Rod & Custom shows when we can. I have some pretty rare show cars and enjoy showing them off. That does not compare to the adrenaline of going fast in an old car down the racetrack. “Tigger” has been a build 45 years in the making. At the age of 15 I wanted to build a 1965 Mercury Comet straight axle car so I did. And while I was running the car it started to overheat and as I was tightening the radiator cap, I cut the tips of my index and middle finger off on the flex fan. Well, when you are 15 you kinda have to do what your parents say so I had to get rid of the car. I started this build of “Tigger” in November of 2017 and drove to Bismarck, North Dakota to pick up the car. It was painted, not lettered but that's about it. “Tigger” had a mostly stock 390 GT motor with a dual quad. The car ran in the low 140's……with that being said I called upon a friend to help me build a motor to achieve a 12 second car. I wanted to be able to challenge an “altered” 1967 Comet from Pennsylvania a.k.a. “Toxic” so we called him out to race at the FE race and reunion. He immediately said if I wanted a 12 second car I was not going to be happy so let's build a 10 second car so we did. We took a stock 390 block and pushed it to its limit. We made a 445 stock that pushed 682 hp at 6800 rpm using basically parts out of a box. We used the original C6 transmission that came with the car until it exploded on the dyno so now I have a fully rollerized C4 that should handle up to 1000 hp. After launching the car off the convertor (5500 rpm), I ripped the rear part of the chassis off the car…..with that being said, I had a chassis shop build me a back half that would support the torque. The car weighs 3254 with a driver! I hooked up with the Mark Davis and the Brew City Gassers at Great Lakes Dragway on Labor Day weekend in 2019 for the Time Machine Nationals. Found the group to be an awesome bunch and I have participated with all events ever since. I had decided to come to Alabama for the Gasser Blow Out when I had a discussion with my friend Alan Hutcheson about the year coming to an end. He shot me a picture of the flyer and then I decided it was a no brainer to attend. I heard all the great things about the Southern Outlaw Gassers and immediately wanted to be a part of the group. I will go pretty much anywhere for car related activities. I have raced at Holly Springs, Mississippi (Hutch's fun day), Beaver Springs in Pennsylvania (FE race & reunion), Bowling Green, Kentucky (Hot rod reunion), Great Lakes Dragway (Out-a-sight drags), Rt. 41 Dragway in Morocco, Indiana, Rock Falls raceway in Eau Clare, Wisconsin (Meltdown Fallout #4) I would like to thank Alan Hutcheson aka Hutcheson Racing……..Jeff Burns Racing Engines…….Trevor Wiggins of Get'M Garage Carbs and Chuck Burkhart Chassis My next build is a 1966 Ford Fairlane which I hope will be a 9 second car. Again all my cars for the most part are FE motor Fords. I love the challenge of making an FE motor breath!

SHADE TREE RACING I'm Rodney Potter, born 1969. Grew up in Wayne NY. Always been around all types of racing, street, Nascar, modified and dirt tracks. Some of the home town area heroes are Ritchie Evens, Terry Cook, the Bodine boys, and Shirley Mohdouny and many more including my dad who mainly street raced, especially after he bought new a 68 Ford Grand Torino (which is still in the family). I've always been interested in drag racing more, mainly because I see it as yourself and your car working as a machine to be better than the other person as well as improving yourself with it. I guess I get that idea from my dad because he always says you can have the best equipment for anything but if you don't know it or understand what its doing you don't have SHIT. As I stated earlier I've always been interested in drag racing, I didn't get to see much of it when I was young just looking at the Hot Rod and other magazines that we got. My biggest interests were the altereds, gassers, F/ X and funny car. My dream cars were 40 Willie's coupe, and 65 Mercy Comet A F/X that Don Nicholson turned into the Eliminator 1 car . I've always been around Fords and I say they are the best, mopar is good too. I decided to get into drag racing for myself when I was 19. I did not ask anyone about it especially at home because it became a bad family subject. I was talking with others around that were racing and started looking for the car I wanted. Well one night I went to a friend's house to help him on his car and sitting in the driveway was a white clean original 65 Ford Fairlane 289, 3 on the tree. I bought it. I raced some on the street but I soon learned and remembered what my dad had said many times, racing on the street isn't what it used to be so you be ready to pay the consequences or take it to the track. I took it to the track and then that's when it hit me, I wanted to race it The birth of SHADE TREE racing came to life by me asking my dad if he wanted to help me turn the 65 into a B F/X super stock. His reply was (as he's pointing) “there's the tree help yourself and if you use my tools put them back in there place every day.” So that's why I have SHADE Tree racing on the side of my car today . That 65 and another 65 Falcon which I wanted to make into a gasser went by the wayside, do to marriage and raising a family. Then in 2016, after the divorce, one sunny morning in April my son said to me why don't you get back into racing? I didn't answer right away then he said as he's looking online "here's a gasser car for sale". Well I got interested and looked at it, it was a 41 Ford sedan with a Chevy 400, Muncie 4 speed and a 10 bolt rear. I said, “ hmmm “ Its a half a car to start with we need to get the Chevy stuff out of it someday. So I bought it and raced that year the way it was, and started changing the car over. Early spring of 2018 I decided to totally rebuilt the engine and rear -end. I had good friend and long time engine builder Jeff Foxx help me with the new engine. I then contacted Jessie Holmes and asked if I could race in his group the Southern Outlaw Gassers. The were going to be at Greer SC in April. I hustled up and got ready for the race and traveled 750 miles to race with a group of people I've never met before. I had a blast. One thing lead to another and in 3 weeks I moved to Greer SC mainly to race the Squirrel. In the fall of 2019 I made my mind up it was time to go all out with the Squirrel. I contacted Jessie Holmes about building a new Ford engine and I was going to redesign the car some. We worked on the engine together some and I made new mounts and set the engine back 3 more

inches. Took the car to his place in Pensacola FL, inserted the engine and it fit like a glove.

March 2020 time to test and race the new setup. Not knowing what to expect I did take it a little easy and It ran 6.60 1/8 mile. Right off the trailer I ran a 6.58 later in the day. These times and speeds were way over my expectations. I've since moved to Kansas and still race it and have been running quarter mile races with the best time yet of 10.87 at 117 mph . I would like to thank my sponsors; Warner Enterprises, Deposit, NY., Frank's Garage, Deposit, NY., JH Performance, Pensacola, FL., John Schmidt & Sons, Mt. Hope, KS. That's pretty much my racing experience and story. Future only knows what is next thank you everyone who has helped me get this far, I'm havin a blast.

1961 Ford gassers owners Allen, Tara, Livingston and Sadie ("Pit"crew) It all started when I was a kid going to the old races with my dad (Beaver). It was mostly dirt tracks here in North Alabama, occasionally we would go to Baileytown "Good time dragstrip" or "Jake's". I have always been 100% FORD, Father was as well. The old FE's and the small blocks turning 10k off the line with a toploader wheels 3' off ground. So as my journey begins my wife Tara and I went to see GBO 8 and fell in love with everyone! The people are great cars were cool and everyone welcomed us with open arms. On the way home we decided it was time to race. I started with a 1961 FORD Fairlane, big car not the little one. It was caged 9" coil overs ladder bars, and had a dual quad 460 with a C6. I ran it and it was a Turd. So, as always bigger is better! I put a aluminum headed 532" BBF in it, 4500 converter, here we go... It was very consistent at 6:75 ET. 4k car at 6.75 is humping it. (Gunslinger) So as we all know we always are looking for something different.... That's when I found the 1961 Falcon straight axle caged and ready with again a Turd 429 in it with a Jerico 4 speed! So as of today I am almost done with the 514" BBF, Ram Clutch, with the Jerico. The little falcon is named ( Lil'Beav ) in memory of my father. So everyone watch out at GBO 12 I'm coming! ‌..Allen Livingston

I got the car bug when I was around 6, my dad had a 49 Ford coupe that was a ridge runner car. I won my first race at the Biloxi Drag Strip when I was 14. I was fortunate enough to work part time at Seminole Shell gas station and turned wrenches on the original Mighty Mouse Falcon Gasser at 14, I've always wanted to build a car that is a tribute to Rodney Lewis and Dewey Miller, the builders and owners of the original car. I've built many, many hot rods over the years and street raced everything from a 31 Model A Ford coupe big block Chevells, 55-62 Chevys, 2-57 big block Ford Fairlanes, a 73 Mustang, which I still own, with big block Ford power. I raced the Mustang for 20 years in bracket racing, which I enjoyed, but the Gasser people are FAMILY!!! I found my happy place in my life when I discovered Southern Outlaw Gassers at GBO 2. It took me a while to find the car that I wanted but I'm as happy as a pig in slop with my Mighty Mouse Ranchero and the great friends that I've made at the races. I would like to thank the people that have helped me, thank you Mr. Jesse Holmes and Mr. Bill Thompson for tuning my car to the fastest time ever!!! thank you Mr. Donnie Tanner, Mr. Sam and Miss Terry Sanfilippo for the hand lettering and art work, it's beautiful! Thank you Mr. Acy Warren for your beautiful work with the body and paint! Thank you David Clark and Jake Jordan for everything that y'all have done, thank you Foy Gilmore for helping me get my front end straightened out, My thanks to my brother Ronnie Culbertson for spend days helping me out and a Special thank you to Corey Freeman. I love and cherish every one of them. Glen Culbertson

My name is Rick “Hombre” Salas from Corpus Christi, Texas and owner of this 1955 Chevy Truck. I grew up in the drag racing scene since I was about 5 years old as long as I can remember. I bought the truck back in 1979 from a friend of mine (it’s well known and has had small blocks, big blocks and even a hemi it. A very long history of street drag racing from the 1960’s to mid 70’s before I got it). The original owner is Joe Kipper and I’m the 5th or 6th owner to this day. I built a 355 c.i. motor with a chrome single carb tunnel ram with a Muncie 4 speed transmission and a 6:14 gear in the back that I raced. It was fun and very radical. I retired from racing back in 1985 due to starting a family. Then, children pretty much got on their own in 2013, so in 2014 I knocked off all the cobwebs off the truck and decided to get back in restoring the truck to racing condition again. I had gone to the track back in 2015 and saw a bunch of cool looking cars which happened to be the Southern Gassers Club and we’re racing. I spoke to a man that was the President -- Frankie Allan to whom I inquired about becoming a member. I raced with them for about a year and a half. I started going to a lot of invites from the Southern Outlaw Gasser and ended up becoming a member. I’ve been racing with them ever since. The whole gasser organization is a bunch of cool friendly people whom we call family. We enjoy and always look forward to seeing everybody everytime we go to an event. The Hombre ‘55 truck is also used for ministering as I am a member of the Bikers For Christ Ministry (Hombre is my Road Name). So we take advantage of sharing the Gospel to the fans and the gasser family because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes. (Romans 1:16). Looking forward to driving 725 miles from Corpus Christi, Texas to Atmore, Alabama to be part of the GBO12. GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME, AND ALL THE TIME GOD IS GOOD !!! RICK “HOMBRE” SALAS

This is an all glass car with a square tube chassis. Ladder bar coil over 9" Ford rear. Moser alum center section, with 4.30 gears. Also Moser 33 spline axles and spoon with drum brakes. The transmission is a Powerglide design all aftermarket with a Reid case built to withstand 1200 HP. The torque converter is a Spragless super 8 set up for use with a blower. The engine is a SBC GM block, poured to the water pump inlets. So water will circulate through the upper cylinders and heads. Cools nicely using a Mezire remote frame mounted water pump. It's a normal blower build. Steel crank double keyed, alum rod forged lower I compression piston. Total seal rings. O-ringed block, copper head gaskets. Roller cam for a blower. RHS steel heads. The blower is 6-71 roots style custom built by Eddy Landers. All polished. Runs on alky through a Enderle bird catcher with a K valve. Fired with a Joe Hunt remote coil mag The current tune is 7% overdrive. Starts easy from the seat. It makes approx 750 hp. It's fairly mild for longevity. The car runs consistent 5's in the 1/8th mile. Best last time out 5.65 @ 127. There is 30 passes on the complete driveline and slicks. I will supply complete engine specs and instructions on maintenance and operation to buyer. The car is titled as a 40 Willys in Florida in my name. I have owned and raced this car for 20 years. Henry's Hot Rods Brandon Miller Wake Forest, NC Henry's Hot Rods is a fictitious shop located in Huntley, IL and established in 1943. Why there? Henry's is named after my late father, Henry Miller. He was born in Huntley in 1943. Unfortunately he passed way too soon. Together we built a couple of 60's Mustangs and cut up more parts cars than I can count. I had been away from cars and racing for almost 15 years and was spurred by my friends that run The Meltdown Drags to get back into racing. From there, Henry's Hot Rods was born and all future builds will wear that name. The first to come out of the "shop" was a 1943 Mercury Monterey D/G car. "Quicksilver" I wanted to be different and that sure is different. I built the entire car in my garage including the drivetrain, flake paint, and stitched up a diamond pleat 60's two tone interior. It saw double duty as a street car but mostly it saw action at an 1/8 or 1/4 mile at a time. A 331 Ford stroker sat under the hood, albeit with 289 painted on the side. Everyone fibs a little right? All of the lettering and logos are hand painted on the car by Stephen Filarski. Also known as The Gold Leaf Man. I'll be running a '65 Shelby GT 350 at GBO 12 this year as I am in between gasser builds. Coming to GBO 13 is Whirlaway, a 1941 Ford Business Coupe. "Whirlaway" was the 1941 Triple Crown WInner. Why pick that?? My wife and I also adopt and retrain Off-Track Thoroughbred racehorses. Horsepower everywhere...

I first got interested in nostalgia drag racing my own car when I started building my 31 sedan. My friend and drag racing guru Jody Blalock asked me to bring my car to Silver Dollar Motorsports Park, Reynolds, GA. just to see what it would do in the 1/4, ... 12:13 I was hooked.! After that went to Atlanta to race, I think I met Jim Homiersndr there, a lot of nostalgia cars were there, might have met Jessie also, that was several years ago. Later on went to one of Jessie Holmes events, a GBO, I think, and loved it even more. All for fun, no stress, happy people doing the same as me...its for the fans, the kids and of course us....all because of Jessie Holmes and some others. I’m 70 now so I hope to keep going until the Lord tells me enough. My closest track is 100 miles, some are 200, 300, 400 miles away, I don’t care, if I've got the fuel I'm going. Thank you Jessie for your unselfish commitment to our sport, the kids, racers and fans.... Bobby Turner

HAM-BONE After GBO 11.... I soooo wanted a Gasser. After socializing and hanging out with the Southern Outlaw Gasser group.... I Knew what I was gonna build. On that day I bought a dual 4 barrel Tunnel. And so it began..! It was a covid pandemic Outdoor backyard build. No indoor shed, no power tools, and no lifts. I bought the 54 truck body out of a field many years ago. I had all the stuff sitting in my shed to build a gasser out of it. I set the body on it and welded in place... with a Mini X from my work. In 8 hours It has an S10 frame under it. 4.88 gear 12 bolt rear axle. 10.5x29 slicks. 500 +/- hp small block Chevy 7.2sec / 97mph 1/8 mile. Soon to be installing a 1957 half ton pick up straight axle.. And all the necessary things to make it do wheelies. The group has been tremendously helpful and accommodating and welcoming. I am proud to be a part of the Southern Outlaw Gasser group Alan Simmons ‌. Summerdale, Al.

Miss Fitt 1963 Ford Fairlane Car Info: 1963 Ford Fairlane Outlaw Gasser/SFX Match race tribute. Blown Injected Rodeck engine, powerglide trans, 9in Ford Rearend. Best 1/8 mile ET 5.55 at 123 MPH. All factory steel body with original glass windows and mechanisms. 3350 Pounds I have been interested in hot rodding in some form or another since I was a young child. My uncle Charles "Spud" Leggett was a big influence on that, so it just stuck with me my entire life. I became mechanic with my own shop right out of high school, and have been at it ever since. From building a '67 Fastback Mustang to street race in high school, to my Boogie Scott built rear engine dragster in the mid 80's, to owning a mud drag track and campaigning a blown injected altered through the 90's, to racing Jr Dragsters with my youngest son in the 2000's, to Miss Fitt now, I have never stepped far away from drag racing in some form or another. Miss Fitt began as a friendly wager with some buddies to build a hot rod using no money, just what you had laying around the shop. I wanted to build something like what I grew up seeing in Hot Rod Magazines during my childhood, and had this little Fairlane sitting behind the shop, so I just emptied my brain on to it like a canvas. It was originally meant to be a street/strip car, to play with, cruise etc, until we met up with Jessie Holmes and other members of the Southern Gassers group. I took the car out to a race with them, and immediately blew up the little 289 and 4-speed combination that was in the car when I drug it out of a field originally. We had so much fun drag racing with this group of guys, the path was clear that Miss Fitt would become more of a dedicated drag car, and the escalation began, eventually over a few years leading to where it is now, with a blown Rodeck big block powerplant running mid 5's when it's together. A few months after that first race, around October of 2014, we worked with Jessie Holmes on promoting the first Gasser Blowout event at Atmore Dragway. My son Tommy and I travelled to Atlanta Dragway for a nostalgia event and were able to meet and invite many of great people who now make up the backbone of the Southern Outlaw Gassers today. A few months after the First GBO event, we got together with Jessie, and Glen Henderson at a Whataburger in Pensacola, FL and formed Southern Outlaw Gassers. We have attended every Gasser Blowout event since then, 6 years strong, and have really formed a second family with this group of people. It feels like going home when you are at one of these events. Miss Fitt will make her return at GBO 12, two years after grenading the engine at GBO 8 and being parked. We look forward to getting back to Atmore and racing with our friends again! My name is Mitch Fuselier, I’ll tell you a little bit about myself, I recently retired at 63 yrs old and have always been a car guy. My life long dream has always been to build a car from scratch. I was the kid who stayed in trouble for stapling center folds on my bedroom wall, of course it was out the middle of hotrod magazines. I met John Gross about 2 yrs ago and we became friends instantly. He has been an amazing friend and mentor. John is 76 yrs old and was in the process of selling his Desoto gasser and said he was getting out of racing. Well of course I new better since he has built and raced cars all of his life, on sand, salt, round track and drags. One night he called me and asked if I was serious about building a car he said he had one more car in him and the partner ship began. April 14th, 2019 was start date of the build of our 1964 Comet gasser which has been named Bodacious Too! He taught me everything while making sure that I understood the dynamics of the build down to the grade of bolts used and why. Also not only how we were building the car but why sometimes getting out the pencil and paper and making sure I understood why I was doing something. John's last gasser was a Desoto which was the original Bodacious. So being this was going to be his last car I named it Bodacious Too. Together we built everything on this car except the transmission. John let me build the engine under his supervision which turned out to be pretty impressive. Its been 43 years since I've drag raced, but remember I have a good teacher. Looking forward to some fun and fast times with the Southern Outlaw Gassers. …….. Mitch

1986 S/10 Blazer Drag Truck- Clear Title. I am unable to finish up my blazer the way I want to. It saddens me that I have to come to the conclusion. I just want everyone who knows this truck from the track and knows how much work has went into it in the last few years, that its not the same as it was the last time it was there. No one can build this truck for what I am gonna’ let it go for. Its got 385 stroker with MSD/Holley etc. Has got a fiberglass Harwood bolt on cowl hood. I just put a Pro Bracket 4 FTI Powerglide with built transbrake and it s got FTI 4500 stall with the FTI fluid and NHRA certified bell housing as well. All Lines are Fragola with AN fittings. I put every part on this truck brand new and some top of the line. I have receipts and ALL records on file in a box to back up every detail and I also have photographs from the tear down and rebuild as I went along with it all. The truck is also undercoated through out under it along with inside and its also been painted under it and also inside as well. There is way, way, to much to list. Please I'm asking for serious only and don't just assume-please come by and look at it. Everything is together on it and its came along way in short time. (more pictures and video info available) Comes with some parts along with it so please call me for more info or text me, Kenny at 228-218-7306 asking $9500 OBO for it. Posted 9/20
