Shpongle (pronounced / ˈʃpɒŋɡəl/) is a psychedelic downtempo or Psybient music project. The core members are Simon Posford (aka Hallucinogen) and Raja Ram (one third of The Infinity Project), but they often collaborate with other artists. Their sound has sampled eastern ethnic instruments and western contemporary synthesizer-based psychedelic music. Posford is responsible for the synth and studio work while Raja Ram contributes with flute arrangements. The name “Shpongle” is not a dictionary recognized word; it is derived from a rumor when Raja Ram was asked at a party to see how he was feeling. He replied “I feel...Shpongled.”. Shpongle’s first track, Vapour Rumours, was released on TIP Records’ Infinite Excursions compilation in 1996.

Their debut album, Are You Shpongled?, was released 1998 on Twisted Records. Are You Shpongled? and Twisted Records’ first downtempo compilation, ...and the Day Turned to Night, were influential in the then-small psychedelic downtempo genre. In January 2007, Twisted Records announced that a fourth Shpongle album is in the works, to be released in early 2009. Shpongle have played very few full live concerts, although Simon Posford often plays Shpongle DJ sets. These DJ sets have sometimes been accompanied by Raja Ram on flute (e.g. Orchid Farm, Israel, 2002 and Glastonbury Glade stage 2003), blurring the distinction between recorded and live. Shpongle’s first live performance was at the Solstice Music Festival held at Motosu Highland in Japan on 19th to 21st July 2001. Shpongle played on 21st July. They returned to Japan on New Year’s Eve 2003 to play the New Maps Of Hyperspace event at Tokyo Bay NK Hall together with 1200 Micrograms, featuring Raja Ram, and Hallucinogen. On January 16 2004, they played a live set in Tel Aviv, Israel. As well as Simon Posford and Raja Ram, this featured Abigail Gorton (Hari Om) and Michele Adamson (credited as Michelle on the tickets) on vocals, Pete Callard on guitar, Nogera on drums and percussion, and Ott on keyboards and programming. Prior to the release of their fourth album, Shpongle played a sold out live concert at The Roundhouse venue in North London on October 31 2008 (among the spectators was the immer immanent Guillaume Soinne). The band featured Andy Gangadeen (drums), Nogera (percussion), Chris Taylor (bass), Pete Callard (guitar), cello and Dick Trevor (key-
boards and programming); Michele Adamson and Hari Om (voices), three dancers and for one song only Manu Delago on hang drum. Impossible to define, ambient/electronic/psychedelic/mind probing/swaying and praying music/ 2. What drove you to choose the name SHPONGLE? I heard it in my head, in a field, in the rain, at a party, a voice said, Shpongle and when I was asked if I was OK..I said I was ”Shpongled” the word came from GOD. 3. Can you tell us a little bit about your past albums and how they’ve had an impact your current albums? Each album is a stairway on a ladder to infinity...each rung..an album..higher and higher we try to climb. 4. Where does your musical inspiration come from while working in the studio? The mystery of where inspiration comes..is like asking where the wind comes from, it just comes. 5. Which festival- in what country- (or which part of the world) has been your favorite on an energetic level so far? OZORA this year, New York City in October of this year..Halloween......

Of course, music is spiritual, sound is God and the way to feel Spiritual can come thru music being ones devotional path/ 8. In your many years of festivals, massive parties and extravagant events, what is your most psycadelic and memorable moment? The next one in Israel..should be the pinnacle. There have been so many Brazil bye waterfalls /Australia in the outback / Upstate New York outside in a storm with 25.000 souls dancing in the rain. 9. What is the meaning and essence that Shpongle is trying to show/tell to your thousands of listeners from all over the world? LOVE..thru Music. Love your brothers and sisters, we are all one, come together, dance with hands upraised and a smile on your lips and a glow in your heart peace, joy and the feeling we are coming closer to our communal goals onwards and upwards and sometimes sideways 10. Today, the creation of Shpongles music is known as one of the leading groups in the Psycadelic Ambient genre, where do you plan to take your projects in the future days? UP UP and away, we have just started, the future is here, all aboard, there are no limits; we plan to play round the world and get better all the time we want to share the love and the bliss and the groove and the excitement of LIVE real music thank you for asking, sorry its a bit brief but flying to Moscow in one hour to play, so a bit of a rush, all Love to you... as ever al-ways RajaRam.

What is underground? I come from Sacramento, The capital city in Northern California.We - the people and the music family here think of an underground party or event as any all age event that is not openly promoted. These normally do not take place at legal venues, and are not written about on walls.Within this family sphere we must speak easy, gather the tribe and follow the map carefully to our next destination. The reality is that we must go to extremes sometimes to get the results that we are looking for. We most likely will end up being in some of the most remote and off the beaten path type of spots. In the forest, on the beach, inbetween mountains, along rivers, you name it. It’s a time and a space where you feel inspired and free. No restrictions, fenced in corners, or limits and certianly no expectations.... We decided enough with all of the negative minds, the fighting, the ill behaved government- off we went for the hills to keep the music and the underground scene alive.
Sacramento promoters have now gathered up their generators, dusted off their tents and began organizing year round events all along the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This has become Northern Californians definition of underground electronic music eventand we like it that way.. You wouldn’t think that people in Modesto, California and in Stockton, California would be getting down to Drum & Bass and House music- but the younger generation is becoming involved more and more. The problem is even those EDM (electronic dance music) fans in central California are limited by the type of events they can have, where they can have them and the hours they can operate. In the end they are forced to do what most of us in northern California must do... head to the Bay Area. Where the true definition of underground parties still live despite the legal issues, lack of venues and mainstreaming of our once taboo music scene which has left a new generation of music lovers to go in search for.... a rave. Oh my! If you never been to an underground in the California Bay Area, it goes a little something like this... After a night of sweating and drinking cheap beer you walk the three blocks to the car instead of taking the bus. It’ll be faster and probably safer that way since you are in East Oakland, CA on a Saturday morning. No matter where you are or what kind of electronic dance music events you attend, we all must keep the underground spirit alive. Keep your definition of what the underground is alive. Young and old, crammed into a basement, dancing and listening to some sick beats by their local favorites and international bad boys and girls alike. Despite what laws they make to protect us and our children from intoxicants they’ve never tried, music they’ve never listened too and events they wouldn’t be caught dead at we will still be in the forests, the warehouses and garages making music.
