wonderland Melbourne is a cultural wonderland this winter, delivering a feast of art, music, sport, theatre and festivals.

Look animated

Animation enthusiasts of all ages will be in their element at Wallace & Gromit and Friends: The Magic of Aardman (29 June – 29 October) at ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) as part of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series. See how the creative geniuses from the Aardman studio, who gave us Chicken Run and Shaun the Sheep, bring quirky claymation characters to life. This fascinating exhibition comprises hundreds of sketches, storyboards, plasticine models and film shorts. Highlights include 50 set pieces, such as Wallace’s Cracking Contraptions and Gromit’s famous vegetable garden, flying machinery from Chicken Run and the spectacular five-metre tall ship from The Pirates! Band of Misfits. Visitors will also get a sneak peek at artworks from the studio’s forthcoming feature film Early Man due for release in 2018. w acmi.net.au

Docklands Firelight Festival

Fun after dark

Soak up the delicious aromas and warm festive atmosphere at Queen Victoria Market’s Winter Night Market (7 June – 30 August). Each Wednesday evening from 5pm to 10pm, shop up a storm at the local artisan stalls and enjoy the crackling fires, live music, roving performers and superb, tasty street food from around the globe. w thenightmarket.com.au

Magic carpet ride

Make sure you catch Aladdin the Musical (throughout winter) at Her Majesty’s Theatre before the magic carpet takes flight to its next city. Based on the 1992 animated Disney classic and featuring its memorable songs, the Broadway production is being touted as one of the largest musicals ever mounted in Australia, boasting a cast of 37 performers, 337 costumes featuring 500,000 Swarovski crystals and 30 tonnes of ‘flying’ scenery. w aladdinthemusical.com.au

Celebrate winter in Docklands

Docklands will come alive with fire and light from 30 June to 2 July. Visit the Docklands waterfront and enjoy nightly festivities and spectacular visual art symbolising fire and light. Discover sculptures made by local artists, lanterns, fire performers, pyrotechnics, roving entertainers and live music. In keeping with the fire theme, there will be plenty of fabulous barbecue food and sweet treats on offer to keep you warm across the weekend of activities.

Open for inspection

Have a stickybeak at some of Victoria’s oldest and most interesting buildings during Open House Melbourne (29 & 30 July). Toyota AFL Premiership Season

Soccer showdowns

See international soccer powerhouses Brazil and Argentina face off at the MCG as part of the Chevrolet Brasil Global Tour: Brazil vs Argentina (9 June). While touted as a friendly, this match between South American rivals will surely be thrilling and fiery. Four days later, Socceroos vs Brazil (13 June) will take centre stage at the MCG, with Australia just coming off a World Cup qualification match against Saudi Arabia. Bring your vocal cords and national pride for a ripper match. w ticketek.com.au

In the know

Sean McMahon Rugby star for the Australian Wallabies and Melbourne Rebels Brisbane-born rugby union young gun Sean McMahon has fallen in love with Melbourne after shifting states four years ago.

Footy fever

Rug up and get among the action of the 2017 Toyota AFL Premiership Season (until 30 September) at the MCG, Etihad Stadium and Geelong’s Simonds Stadium. The competition will be in full swing throughout winter, enthralling fans as teams strive for a berth in the finals. w afl.com.au

Brew crew

We asked Sean to share with us some of his favourite places in Melbourne:

Cafe

Café Azul and A Thousand Blessings in Richmond are brilliant for breakfast.

Restaurant

Hawker Hall on Chapel Street is my all-time favourite. You can’t go wrong if you order the Feed Me option.

Whether you’re congregating with mates for a drink before heading to your preferred footy code or meeting afterwards to celebrate or commiserate, there are plenty of places to go for a cold ale and warm atmosphere.

Place

Order a beer at the ground floor bar of Melbourne's oldest licensed pub The Duke of Wellington in Flinders Street.

My sweet indulgence is having gelato at Gelato Messina in Richmond. Absolutely delicious!

Choose from the mind-boggling list of 50 varieties on tap at Forester’s Pub and Dining, a cavernous Collingwood pub and live music venue that’s open until the wee hours. If top-notch local and international craft beers and American-style comfort food are your thing then The Alehouse Project, a relaxed East Brunswick bar and diner, is just for you. w dukeofwellington.com.au w forestershall.com.au w thealehouseproject.com.au

I love Southbank. You can wander along the promenade and there’s so much to look at.

It’s snow time

Pack your woolies and head to Mt Buller Alpine Resort, about three hours’ drive from Melbourne. Stop at Mansfield to grab a coffee at The Produce Shop and stretch your legs. Hire tyre chains and all the equipment and waterproof gear you’ll need to hit the slopes. Continue on to the entrance of the resort at Mirimbah, where you’ll need to pay an entry fee. Then it’s time to suit up and ski, snowboard, toboggan, snowshoe or just play in the white powder until the sun fades. Give your legs a rest and warm up with lunch or an early dinner at Cattleman’s Cafe in the village centre. w mtbuller.com.au w victoriashighcountry.com.au

My Melbourne

Hue Blanes

This accomplished local musician is one of the headline acts for the 2017 Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

26

Hue's favourites We asked Hue to nominate his favourite places in the city and beyond.

Jazz venues Peninsula Hot Springs

Hailing from Healesville in Victoria’s Yarra Valley, a region renowned for picturesque vineyards, 32-year-old Hue began piano lessons at age seven. “My first gigs were playing a keyboard and singing pop songs at local school fetes and community festivals,” he recalls with a grin. Just like the fine plonk produced on his old stomping ground, Hue’s musical talents and tastes continued to mature and develop interesting flavours. During the past decade, Hue, who now calls Brunswick home, has played at the country’s biggest festivals and jazz venues and collaborated with the best in the business. He’s also released two albums Sad Songs Make Me Happy and Holiday (through local vinyl label Pound Records) and won multiple awards. “While I was trained and nurtured in jazz and classical, I’ve also taken a few other paths, including electro hip-hop and musical direction for theatre shows and working on music for TV series on the ABC.”

Hue’s current focus is his new instrumental work, Things that have been said (10 June), inspired by famous and infamous speeches from the 20th and 21st centuries, for the Melbourne International Jazz Festival (2–11 June). The 50-minute show will be staged at Brunswick’s The Jazzlab and performed by a quartet of musicians with backgrounds in both the jazz and classical styles. This year will be Hue’s seventh festival and he says they just keep getting bigger and better. “I’m very proud of my Melbourne roots and the city’s jazz festival is quite simply the best festival in Australia, with the best players from around the world and locally. “The 2017 festival program is awesome and I can’t wait to see international headliners such as Bill Frisell, as well as local favourites Andrea Keller, Bob Sedergreen, Ted Vining and so many more.”

Cafe

Kines Cafe in Hope Street, Brunswick, has a great menu and vinyl is on rotation. There’s a good vibe.

Coffee

Padre in Brunswick brews the best coffee.

Restaurant

I’m hesitant to blow this secret, but Green Fields in Sydney Road does great Vietnamese and it’s cheap.

Treat

I like to get out of town to the Peninsula Hot Springs for some R&R.

View

I can’t go past the view of the Yarra Valley from my mum’s house. Follow Hue on: /hueblanesmusic Connect with the Melbourne International Jazz Festival on: w melbournejazz.com /melbournejazzfestival @MelbJazzFest melbjazzfestival

Enjoy stunning acrobatics, special effects and distinctly Aussie humour at Circus Oz’s new Model Citizens show (20 June–16 July) under the Big Top at Birrarung Marr. Movie matters

If you’re into arthouse flicks, silver screen classics or 3D natural history documentaries, Melbourne has a cinema – indoor, outdoor, drive-in and heritagelisted – for every taste. Catch a cult classic at the grand art deco Astor Theatre in St Kilda. As Melbourne’s oldest, still-operating theatre, this single-screen venue is one of city’s few remaining independent cinemas. If you’re a child of the 70s or 80s or just love all things retro, you’ll be right at home at Dockland’s Backlot Rooftop Drive-in set against the city nightscape. Movie action doesn’t get much bigger than IMAX Melbourne, where you’ll gawp at the world's largest screen. Arts & culture

Melbourne’s modern museums bring history, science and nature to life, with visitors encouraged to touch and interact with many of the exhibits. Melbourne Museum is experiencing an insect invasion this winter, with the arrival of Bug Lab: Little Bugs, Super Powers (23 June – 15 October), a colourful, magical exhibition featuring giant bug models and hands-on science showcasing the abilities and super powers of bugs that will blow you away. The beautiful Old Treasury Building is staging a free exhibition, Wild Colonial Boys: Bushrangers in Victoria (until August), telling the stories of the state’s infamous and lesser-known bush bandits. Focusing on the other side of the law is the Victoria Police Museum, which uncovers how policing, crimefighting technology and forensic science have evolved over the past 150 years.

Her Majesty’s Theatre

Stage presence

Melbourne has huge affection for its grand old theatres, including The Princess Theatre, which graces Spring Street and hosts many of the big musical premieres in Australia. The Victorianera theatre looks particularly beautiful at night when its magnificent façade is illuminated and the red carpet is rolled out. A few blocks away is Her Majesty’s Theatre, another heritage-listed venue that has a large seating capacity (1700 to be precise) yet still feels intimate. Her Maj, as she’s fondly known, has been entertaining audiences with performances and musicals since 1886. The Regent (circa 1926) in nearby Collins Street has survived fire, floods and demolition threats to stand tall today as a popular venue for touring musicals and galas, including the Melbourne Comedy Festival opening nights. w marrinergroup.com.au w hmt.com.au

The Shrine of Remembrance is one of Melbourne’s most meaningful landmarks, honouring the service and sacrifice of Australian men and women who have served in defending Australia and peacekeeping operations. Aladdin

the Musical is “pure genie-us”

Deen Van Meer ©Disney

Take a magic carpet ride this winter at one of the largest productions mounted in Australia, Aladdin the Musical, being staged at Her Majesty’s Theatre. Aladdin the Musical delivers everything you could wish for in a theatre show: a captivating storyline, lovable characters, stunning sets, dazzling costumes, catchy songs, witty comedy and timeless romance. Based on the hugely popular 1992 Disney movie, the production follows the adventures of street urchin Aladdin (Ainsley Melham) and fiercely independent Princess Jasmine (Hiba Elchikhe) as they strive to stop evil Jafar (Adam Murphy) from taking over the kingdom of Agrabah. US Broadway veteran Michael James Scott is an absolute scream as charismatic and comedic Genie (portrayed by Robin Williams in the film) and you won’t be able to resist

singing along with the theme song ‘A Whole New World’, as well as Genie’s cheeky rendition of ‘Friend Like Me’. This show will delight all ages, from those who grew up watching the animated classic, to older generations who love a Broadway blockbuster. Deen Van Meer ©Disney

The audience will also be wowed by the visual spectacle of 337 costumes featuring 500,000 Swarovski crystals and the 30 tonnes of ‘flying’ scenery that beg the question, ‘How did they do that?’ So what are you waiting for? Book your seat for this huge Broadway spectacle in Melbourne before the magic carpet takes off for another city. w aladdinthemusical.com.au

888 Collins

Making light of Melbourne’s weather Arts & culture

You’ve heard of people changing their minds like the weather, but how about a building that changes colour according to the temperature? Each night, the façade of 888 Collins – a 15-storey residential building on the corner of Bourke and Collins streets in Docklands – puts on a mesmerising light show of colours and patterns dictated by the prevailing temperature and weather conditions.

“When I moved to Melbourne nine years ago, I was taken by the city’s fixation with weather,” Ramus explains. “When we were offered the opportunity with Light House to reflect the weather through light, our concept for 888 Collins was born.

The installation, titled Light House, runs on 100 per cent solar power and comprises 58,000 LED lights.

“Rather than showing the weather report in numbers, the light work is an abstract representation of the climate and forecast. If it’s going to be hot, the lines of lights rise like a temperature gauge and the colours get warmer, but if a cold snap is on the way you’ll see cooler tones.

The building’s developer, Lendlease, sought acclaimed lighting designer Bruce Ramus, who has worked with rock stars U2, REM and David Bowie, to create the architectural lighting landmark.

“The goal is to reflect how the weather feels through gently changing movement, colour and patterns,” he says. How does it work? The sophisticated lighting system is fed real-time data from the Bureau of Meteorology and a weather station on 888 Collins’ roof. A great place to view the light spectacular during winter is from Buluk Park, located at 894–910 Collins Street, Docklands. w victoriaharbour.com.au/lighthouse w lendlease.com w ramus.com.au

In-spire-ing

Arts Centre Melbourne

Sitting beneath one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks — the magnificent spire – Arts Centre Melbourne is at the heart of Australia’s largest performing arts precinct.

For more than 30 years, Arts Centre Melbourne has been a hub for story-telling through world-class theatre, dance, music, art and circus, and thrilling audiences with a diverse program of local and international productions and exhibitions. Arts Centre Melbourne is much bigger than even most Victorians realise, comprising three venues on both sides of St Kilda Road: The Theatres Building has the impressive State Theatre, Playhouse and intimate Fairfax Studio; Hamer Hall is a premier venue for musical performances, including Melbourne Symphony Orchestra; and Sidney Myer Music Bowl is popular for openair concerts. More than merely a place to see a show, this buzzing cultural precinct is a remarkable tourist attraction in its own right that can be explored and enjoyed in a variety of ways. The good news is many of the experiences are free.

Arts & culture

The cultural hub

More than meets the eye

Visitors can peruse the works of renowned Australian artists such as Arthur Boyd and Sidney Nolan lining the walls of the building or take a guided tour (daily at 11am). Also on Sundays (10am to 4pm), local artisans showcase their unique handmade goods – perfect for one-of-a-kind gifts – at the Sunday Market on the Arts Centre Melbourne lawn.

Wining and dining

There are plenty of great places to eat and drink. The Barre is perfect for a pre-show wine, meal or late-night drink. For a quick coffee and cake break try Cento and Café Vic. At Hamer Hall, Bombini Buzz is serving micro-roasted Melbourne coffee and ice-cream during the day, morphing into a pre-show and late night bar alongside Fatto Bar & Cantina, Teatro and Saké also overlooking the Yarra River. w artscentremelbourne.com.au

Supersense

World premieres, new musical collaborations and unexpected ecstatic experiences feature in Supersense, a curated contemporary arts festival returning to Arts Centre Melbourne in August 2017.

We’re proud to be home to some of Melbourne’s most iconic food stories

He came to Australia rich in pastry and café expertise.

GIORGIO ANGELÉ began his training in Rome at the ripe age of 10. In 1956, he came to Australia with the Italian Olympic team as a Pastr y Chef. After working a few years he migrated to Australia permanently and has been involved in the industr y ever since. He later acquired Brunetti where you can still find him in the kitchen baking delicious European-style sweets and desserts. Brunetti is a Melbourne food institution and with expansion across the city and international locations, Melbourne Airport is ver y lucky to have them situated in the newly built T4 Domestic Terminal.

The man behind Vue de monde took cooking classes in a girls school. SHANNON BENNETT was raised in Westmeadows in Melbourne. He attended Penleigh Essendon Grammar School where an opportunity at the local girls school to study Home Economics was too good to pass up. Shannon’s passion for cooking was further realised by trips to Europe where his uncle introduced him to the sophisticated world of restaurants. His Vue de monde restaurant quickly became a Melbourne icon and in 2010 he opened Café Vue at Melbourne International Airport as an option for international travellers. In 2011 he followed this up with Café Vue Express, extending the experience to all travellers. T2, Level 1 Departures.

Sammi Dobinson and Mandy Couzen’s desire to share the best of the west with the rest of Melbourne – especially other parents tearing their hair out looking for ways to entertain their littlies – was the impetus for creating the Mamma Knows West website. “We were new mums finding ourselves constantly looking for places to play and explore with our inquisitive kids, so when we found fabulous parks and events we wanted to share the good news,” Sammi explains.

Word on the street

Jarrod (42) from South Melbourne I’d heard great things about the revamped Curlewis Golf Club – it’s ranked in the top 50 public courses in Australia. I organised for a few mates to go for a round one Sunday. We had one of the new Golf Boards – a motorised scooter version of a gold cart – making the day a bit easier.

In the know

Rollo Crittenden Second-generation winemaker at Crittenden Wines Wine is certainly a family affair at Mornington Peninsula’s Crittenden Estate. Winemaker Rollo Crittenden is following in the steps of his dad and winery founder Garry and progressively taking on management of the winery and Crittenden Estate Wine Centre. Rollo’s wife Linda manages the luxurious Lakeside Villas located on the vineyard, while his sister Zoe is also a key member of the marketing and management team.

Baywalk Bollard Trail, Geelong

“Our cellar door offers quite a different tasting experience to the typical approach visitors find at most wineries,” Rollo explains. “We invite guests to sit down at a table, select the varieties they’re interested in and sample our wines at their own pace. “Winter is a lovely time to visit our winery – you can look out over the vines and lake from the warmth created by the log fire in the cellar door.” We asked Rollo to share some of his favourite spots on the Mornington Peninsula:

Attraction

Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa, Daylesford

Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges

Hire a car from Redspot Enterprise and set off for the township of Daylesford, which has become synonymous with mineral waters, wellness and relaxation. Visit the Convent Gallery, before heading 10 minutes’ north for lunch at Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm. Next up is an hour or two of pampering and rejuvenation in the therapy baths at Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa. Hold onto that peaceful vibe with an overnight stay at Lake House Daylesford.

Winery

My list of local favourites is a mile long, but some of the standouts are Ocean Eight Winery, Port Phillip Estate and Foxey’s Hangout.

Geelong Library

Geelong, Victoria’s second largest city, has emerged from its past as a manufacturing town to be reinvented as a city with an enviable lifestyle. Incredible places to eat and drink dotted throughout precincts across the city combined with a fresh approach to culture and a sparkling event calendar make Geelong an ideal destination to explore.

Around the Bellarine, towns overlook bays and oceans. You’ll find great coffee, secret shopping spots and fun activities, all with a fresh sea breeze. You needn’t travel far to feel like you’re a million miles away. This coast is the perfect escape; a place to enjoy days as action-packed as you want them to be, then relax and fall asleep to the sounds of the sea.

Half an hour from the city in any direction leads to deliciousness. In the Moorabool Valley and across the Bellarine, produce is grown in farm fresh air alongside some of Australia’s most awarded wineries and vineyards.

Driving

around town Road rules

Traffic laws in Victoria may be different to those in your home city. Below are some of the major traffic rules that apply in Victoria to keep road users safe and ensure traffic flows efficiently. ++ Drivers are required to carry a licence at all times. International Driver Licences are acceptable for up to three months, however you will require a Victorian Drivers Licence after this period. ++ Australians drive on the left-hand side of the road, which can be initially disconcerting for visitors used to driving on the right. ++ Drivers and passengers are required to wear seatbelts. Infants must be restrained in baby capsules and small children in an appropriate booster seat.

++ Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol carries serious penalties. In Australia, you are not permitted to drive a car if your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is 0.05 or higher. If you hold a probationary or provisional driver’s licence, your blood alcohol level must be zero at all times.

Traffic near trams

Cars share the roads with trams on many streets within Melbourne. With these trams come some important rules about driving near them: ++ Tram lanes are designated by a tram lane sign (that may indicate hours of operation) and continuous yellow line. You must not drive in a tram lane during the times it is operational, except for up to 50 metres before turning, so long as you do not obstruct the progress of a tram. ++ You may only overtake a tram on the left. ++ Do not drive past the rear of a tram stopped at a tram stop (where there is no safety zone, dividing strip or traffic island). ++ You must stop level with the rear of the tram and wait for people to get on and off. The tram doors must be closed again before proceeding.

Bicycle lanes

Bicycle lanes are indicated by a bicycle lane sign and a continuous or broken white line. You must not drive in a bicycle lane during the times it is operational, except for up to 50 metres before turning or when parking.

Some particular driving manoeuvres that are used in Melbourne are described below.

Hook turns

Due to tramlines running down the middle of major city streets, there are some intersections where cars turning right need to do so from the left lane. The vehicle remains there until the traffic lights for the road it’s entering turn green, then carefully executes its turn. See onlymelbourne.com.au for a short video demonstration of how to perform a hook turn.

U-turns

To perform a U-turn, a driver makes a 180-degree turn to head back in the direction from which they came. The simple rule to remember is drivers performing U-turns are required to give way to other vehicles and pedestrians. In Victoria, drivers are allowed to make U-turns at intersections with or without traffic signals and at breaks in the median unless there is a ‘No U-turn’ sign.

Visit the VicRoads website For more information about Victoria’s road laws and guidelines for appropriate child restraints. w vicroads.vic.gov.au

139

Useful information

++ Speed limits are clearly marked (generally 50km/h or 60 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h on open roads) and police operate speed safety cameras across Victoria.

Driving is an efficient way to get around during your time in Melbourne, but read on to familiarise yourself with our road rules before taking to the street.
