Built at the height of the gold rush, the magnificent Old Treasury Building now hosts a variety of displays centred on the history of Melbourne, featuring rare original documents from the Public Record Office Victoria. Uncover the development of Melbourne from fledgling village to modern metropolis. Explore the basement gold vaults, where the precious metal was stored in the 1860s and learn about the Victorian gold rush, from first discovery to the events of the Eureka Stockade. You’ll also find the caretakers apartment in the basement: a faithful recreation of where the Maynard family lived during the 1920s. Entry to the museum is free.

The city’s Free Tram Zone includes the city centre and extends from Queen Victoria Market to Docklands, Spring Street, Flinders Street Station and Federation Square (Free Tram Zone shown on Melbourne City Map and Melbourne tram network map). If you’re only travelling in the Free Tram Zone you don’t need a myki. Travel on the City Circle Tram (tram route 35) is also free. Hop on and off the historic trams as often as you like.
