Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Paul Slade Smith

Meet Mrs Bucket Lucy Maunder Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s Mrs Bucket reminds us that even in a world of pure imagination, a mother’s love never goes unnoticed. Melbourne local and star of the stage Lucy Maunder brings this character to life, in what’s set to be a must-see musical this season. Rizzo from Grease, Miss Honey from Matilda and Cynthia Weil in Beautiful: the Carole King Musical are just a few of the characters Lucy Maunder has brought to life on stage, so it’s no surprise her childhood was steeped in the performing arts. “I remember going to see a lot of shows on the West End,” she says. “I went to see Starlight Express about 12 times and listened to the cast album on a daily basis. My parents are both wonderful artists and directors and performers.” In her sweetest role yet, this season she’ll become the caring and earnest Mrs Bucket in the heartwarming Roald Dahl classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre from 9 August. "This is a much-loved story about what can happen when you put your mind and focus into something that means so much to you. Charlie comes from a very poor family to defy all odds."

6

melbourne now+ Winter 2019

“Everyone loves Roald Dahl and can relate to this story. It’s got enough darkness for the adults and enough colour, movement and fluidity for the kids.” Outside of performing, Lucy is a food enthusiast. In fact, she’s currently slowly ticking off the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. As a Melburnian, it’s no surprise she’s also a coffee lover. “I love the coffee culture and my partner has just opened a very successful cafe in the north of Melbourne called Buddy Espresso.”

Lucy's Melbourne Picks Bar Arlechin, the sister bar to Grossi Florentino, is divine, small and dark, with incredible food. Or, Ponyfish Island in the middle of the Yarra. Cafe Buddy Espresso in Strathmore! Come for the best toasties you’ll find in Melbourne and the best coffee. Plus, the owners are spunks.

Chocolate Lovers

+Ratio Cocoa Roasters If you loved Willy Wonka’s emporium, you’ll want to check out this more grown-up but equally tantalising chocolate house. Here, the ethos is bean to bar, using specially sourced single-origin cacao beans and traditional chocolatemaking techniques. Taste and appreciate chocolate made from the beans of Panama, Peru or the Solomon Islands. Or go for the Melbourne Bar — dark chocolate that blends Panamanian and the Solomon Islands’ cacao.

It’s hard to say no to delicious chocolatey morsels, especially after seeing the candy-clad Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical. Indulge and treat yourself to the delights of these chocolate spots.

What was once a humble boutique chocolate stall at Prahran Market has now grown to become an award-winning chocolate producer on the international stage. Its Brunswick East factory and cafe share walls with slick eatery East Elevation, but chocolate lovers should save its neighbour for another day. Enjoy decadent blocks of single-origin chocolate or, if you feel like something a little extra, go for one of its limited-edition concoctions like Gone Surfing (milk chocolate, mango and coconut) or Chinese Lantern (dark chocolate, raspberries, caramelised chilli and Chinese pepper).

The name is synonymous with Australianmade, premium chocolate, so we couldn’t make a list of chocolate spots without including this longstanding favourite. It was born in Melbourne, after all. The range here is massive, with more than 100 varieties, from kid-friendly chocolate pops to blocks that will delight the most discerning palates. Treat yourself by ordering a couple of individual chocolates (raspberry ganache and almond praline are two favourites) with a Belgian hot chocolate.

Marnong Estate, Mickleham Looking for a romantic weekend getaway? Ditch the interstate travel and head another 15 minutes past Melbourne Airport to the indulgent Marnong Estate [2335 Mickleham Road, Mickleham]. With its super-late licence and kitchen hours, no matter where your evening has taken you, there’s more fun and deliciousness to be had.

Stay Gold, Brunswick One of the newest after-dark additions to Sydney Road, Stay Gold [133 Sydney Road, Brunswick] combines the best parts of going out in Melbourne. Live music by some of this city’s best rock’n’roll bands, arcade games and comfy couches for betweenset banter all make for an awesome night out.

Tallboy and Moose, Preston Hardcore beer lovers and Preston locals have been aware of craft brewpub Tallboy and Moose [270 Raglan Street, Preston] for a while; now it’s your turn. An evening session here can consist of a multitude of Tallboy and Moose’s brews, because they make small batches — and lots of ‘em.

Pacific Epping, Epping Thriving shopping centre by day, entertainment destination by night. Pacific Epping [571–583 High Street, Epping] is a focal point in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, with the onsite Readings Cinema and Timezone drawing crowds until well after the sun sets.

Set the Alarm for Early Global Ballooning

The early bird gets to see a different Melbourne. We’ve come up with early-morning activities that show another side of our favourite city. When you’re on holiday, the temptation is to stay out late, turn off the alarm and get up when your body has replenished the sleep bank. Tuck yourself in early though, rise with the birds and see a Melbourne few locals witness on a regular basis.

Breakfast with Friends It’s one of the city’s favourite destinations for visitors of all ages, but few people realise you can start the day having coffee, fruit and pastries with some of the cute creatures at Melbourne Zoo’s Australian Wildlife Breakfast. You’ll arrive before the rest of the zoo’s guests and spend quality time with some of its favourite residents, the koalas, and their keepers. You can also have your photograph taken with a koala, meet the kangaroos and feed the birds. The breakfasts take place on weekdays.

Take a Stroll Unless they have a job that begins as the sun peeks over the horizon, Melburnians tend not to be early risers. It’s worth getting up at dawn, however, to see the city almost completely empty. Walk along the southern side of the Yarra, past the rowing clubs – the athletes training on the water or the runners getting in an early jog are some of the only other people you’ll see – and along the edge of the Royal Botanic Gardens.

By the Bay Looking for a different outlook? Take a sunrise walk along the beach at St Kilda then head to local hangout, the Galleon Cafe. With its mismatched vintage furniture, casual vibe, big portions and 7am start, it’s just the spot to fuel up for the day.

Royal Botanic Gardens

Way Up High Take to the skies and drift across the city and past its sights – the MCG, Eureka Tower, Albert Park and Port Phillip Bay – with Global Ballooning. You’ll help to get the balloon ready as the birds start their morning song then, as the flame heats the air within, drift high into the sky as the sun begins to rise. For a little extra romance, book the champagne breakfast to have following your morning flight.

Market Madness If you’ve ever wondered where the fruit and veg you buy in the supermarket comes from, you’ll love the C the Market tour. The Melbourne Market, a 60-hectare site at Epping, is where about 4000 businesses buy and sell wholesale vegetables, fruit and flowers from Monday to Saturday. Normally, members of the public aren’t allowed in, but Jan Claire, who’s been working at the market since 2005 and operating her tour company since 2009, gives an interactive insider’s view of the goings-on. melbourne now+ Winter 2019

Belle's Hot Chicken

Fried A quick but delicious bite for when you’re on the go. +1 Belle’s Hot Chicken

+2 Peaches

If you’re looking for fried chicken in Melbourne, Belle’s is the place — in fact, it puts the Colonel to shame. Choose from tenders, wings or drumsticks, then choose your level of heat. Mac and cheese, coleslaw, pickled vegetables, fries, three bean salad and roasted yam salad complete the sides menu — if your craving for comfort food is calling strong, opt for all of the above.

Pair your comfort eats with some top-notch cocktails at this bubbly new Melbourne bar and rooftop. Its take on a fried chicken burger (called a chicken sandwich on its menu) is the stuff of dreams and is served till the wee hours. Order it with a side of crinkle cut fries with yuzukosho mayo and a tinny of Melbourne Bitter and you’re in for a comfort-food feast.

+2 Grossi Florentino There’s something oh-so-comforting about carbs and what better way to indulge this winter than with a plate of out-of-this-world pasta? The Grossi group is a gastronomic machine with a suite of restaurants to its name, but it’s hard to pass up its restaurant that focusses on the tradition of Italian cooking. The wild boar ragu comes with pici — like spaghetti but thicker — giving it that little something extra. The duck and porcini pappardelle is also a great choice for a winter dinner. See + Do District Docklands has been reinvigorated and, with this, its shopping and entertainment options have powered up. Whether you’re in town with the family or visiting with friends, it’s hard not to enjoy the fun of Archie Brothers Circus Electric. It’s a gaming arcade, but not as you know it. Shiny new games fill this circusthemed space, along with bowling alleys, dodgem cars and even VR experiences. A full-service cocktail bar serves up crazy concoctions, wine and beer giving it appeal beyond the littlies. In fact, after 8pm it’s 18 and over only.

Over at O’Brien Icehouse, you can get your skates on for few laps of the rink or watch our country’s hockey pros hit the ice. The 2019 season is in full swing, and with two Melbourne-based teams — the Melbourne Mustangs and Melbourne Ice — calling this their home rink, there’s likely to be a game on during your winter visit. thedistrictdocklands.com.au archiebrothers.com.au obrienicehouse.com.au

Your Ultimate Guide to Dog-Friendly Melbourne

Royal Botanic Gardens

Can’t bear being away from your pooch? No sweat. You won’t need to leave your doggo behind when you em-bark on your next Melbourne adventure.

+What to Do The options are endless when it comes to adventures with your dog in Melbourne. Where to start? If you prefer to keep your dog on-lead, make a beeline for one of Melbourne’s most picturesque spots: Royal Botanic Gardens [Birdwood Avenue, South Yarra]. Take a leisurely stroll along one of the paths that snakes through the gardens and enjoy views of Ornamental Lake and the stunning flora and fauna. Or, if your dog has more energy to burn why not take on a lap of The Tan — an almost fourkilometre running track that wraps around part of the gardens and the Shrine of Remembrance and more. If sharing your Melbourne experience with some like-minded dog lovers sounds like your idea of a good time, check out Gourmet Pawprints, a tour company dedicated to dogs and their 26

adoring humans. Its Doggy Walking Tour will see you and your best friend strolling through the seaside suburb of Williamstown, delving into its fascinating history and seeing some of its best sights. A doggy dip at Williamstown Beach might even be on the cards. Speaking of beaches, if your pup loves having a splash in the ocean but you’re after somewhere a little closer to town, head to Port Melbourne Dog Beach [Bay Trail, Port Melbourne] just four kilometres from the CBD. Here, you can enjoy a run or walk along the wide stretch of sand while they frolic off-leash in the water to their heart’s content. rbg.vic.gov.au gourmetpawprints.com.au

It wouldn’t be a Melbourne escape without checking out the foodie scene. With your cocktail in hand, pull up a pew on the terrace and enjoy the view while your pooch relaxes by your side. For a place that’s completely dedicated to canines, you can’t go past Doghouse [195 Johnston Street, Collingwood].
